Record crowd braves thunderstorms 550 people attend 10th Garden Tractor Jamboree

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Even a late morning cloudburst didn’t dampen the momentum of the best turnout ever for a unique local event.

More than 500 people attended the 10th annual AJ’s Garden Tractor Jamboree Saturday and weren’t deterred when Mother Nature turned on both the fireworks and waterworks a little before noon.

“We had 550 people - the most ever,” said host Andy Hinrichs. “Nobody left because of the rain. They just moved inside the buildings and waited it out.”

Hinrichs and his wife Lisa, and their son AJ launched the event in 2010 at their home at 1675 S. Columbian Rd., between Oregon and Polo, as a way to showcase and share their collection of garden tractors.

Other collectors are invited to bring their tractors, and enthusiasts are invited to come and enjoy the day.

Over the years, garden tractor themed events have been added and expanded, an auction is held, and activities for kids are highlighted.

Proceeds from the jamboree go to the Black Hawk Crossings 4-H Club.

Besides Illinois, Hinrichs said people came from Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

Many of them learned about the jamboree from his website and Facebook page, he said.

After communicating about it on social media, several decided to attend the event to meet in person.

“We’ve never had so many tractors.

The rain might have actually helped,” he said with a chuckle. “It might have scared a few people off, and if anymore had come, I don’t know where we would have parked them.”

When the food started running in short supply, volunteers made a trip to a local grocery store for more.

The event remained largely unaffected by the less than ideal weather that included more rain showers in the afternoon.

lined up for the plowing demonstration, which was over before the thunderstorm came between 11 and 11:30 a.m.

“We delayed the auction for maybe an hour,” Hinrichs said.

After the storm, some of the youngsters took to their tractors to do some trail-riding.

“The kids and their tractors were mud head to toe,” Hinrichs said. “It was a great day, that’s for sure.”

The auction was successful, he said, with two cherry pies going for $70 each, a spaghetti dinner basket brought $100, and two quilts brought $100 and $170.

“Everyone was very generous,” Hinrichs said.

An Oregon High School graduate will be taking her cheerleading talents to the next level come next school year.

Grace Mongan, an OHS senior, has made the University of Illinois’ Co-Ed cheerleading team following tryouts last month.

Mongan, the daughter of Dan and Jean Mongan of Oregon, is one of nine girls named to the 18-member team.

“I feel so humbled today and I want to thank all my teachers and coaches who are here today,” said Mongan during a May 10 ceremony to announce her selection. “I can’t believe this is real.”

Mongan said she traveled to the U of I campus on April 14 to try out for the team.

“I was pretty nervous. I found out at 3 p.m. that day that I was one of nine named to the co-ed team,” Mongan said.

Danielle Kunce, the OHS cheerleading coach for the past six years, said all of Mongan’s hard work resulted in her selection to the team.

“I’ve had the honor of working with Grace during my tenure,” Kunce said. “I am super-proud of

New Oregon City Council members sworn in May 14 Two brand new city commissioners were sworn into office at the May 14 Oregon City Council meeting, along with the mayor and two returning commissioners.

Ogle County Judge Robert Hanson administered the oath of office to newcomers Tim Krug and Melanie Cozzi, as well as veteran commissioners Terry Schuster and Kurt Wilson and mayor Ken Williams.

All five were elected on April 2.

Williams also made department

appointments.

Schuster will remain as Budget and Finance Commissioner, and Wilson will continue to serve as Public Health & Safety Commissioner.

Krug was named Streets & Alleys Commissioner, replacing Tom Izer, who was defeated in his bid for re-election.

Cozzi will serve as Public Properties Commissioner, replacing Jim Barnes, who did not seek re-election.

IN BRIEF VFW and Legion plan Memorial Day Service The Oregon VFW, in cooperation with the Oregon American Legion, will hold a Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 27.

Wreaths will be placed at the World War I memorial on the east side of the Ogle County Courthouse at 9 a.m. and then at the new veterans memorial on the north side.

After that, a float will load up for the ride to Riverside Cemetery on North Third Street. All veterans who wish to ride to the cemetery should meet at the courthouse.

A service will be held at approximately 10 a.m. at the cemetery. Bleachers will

be provided for spectators.

A potluck will follow the service at the VFW, 1310 W. Washington St., approximately at noon.

Cinco de Mayo event helps local non-profits Hector and Michelle Carreno, owners of Hector’s Cocina at the Conover Square Mall, were the presenting sponsor for the second annual Cinco de Mayo celebration on May 4 and donated some of the proceeds to local non-profit agencies.

The event, held in Conover Square Mall, included music, children games and activities, Bounce Houses, Loteria (Mexican Bingo), food, a beer garden and piñata breaking.

The Carrenos said they wanted to provide Oregon with a safe, fun, family gathering event while celebrating the Mexican heritage.

They have also helped with the OHS Social Entrepreneur program, KB kickoff fundraisers, farmers markets, Concerts in the Park, Farm to Table dinner, OHS Red & White Night, Oregon block party, Autumn on Parade, and Oregon Together’s Dance the Night Away, and the Rockin’ River Fest.

“They wanted to create an event

that would bring the community together, provide awareness to Conover Square Mall, boost tourism in Oregon, plus helping out local non profits,” said Hands on Oregon Co-President Rick Ryland. “They did just that in 2018 and donated $500 to Hands on Oregon and another $500 to CASA of Ogle County.

“This year they also succeeded their mission and were able to donate $300 to Oregon Park District Scholarship fund, and another $300 to Hands on Oregon.”

The funds were raised through the activities, food, and beverage sales from the celebration.

Ryland said the Carrenos are planning to add more activities to 2020 Cinco de Mayo celebration.

The three-day Leaf River Summer Daze will kickoff Friday, May 31 with an Antique Tractor and Engine Show along with a tractor rodeo at 6 p.m. at the field behind the River Valley Complex.

Numerous food booths will be open, as well as the Lions stand serving hamburgers, hot dogs and bratwurst sandwiches.

The Grass Attack bluegrass band will play from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Central States Fireworks will provide the fireworks show at dusk.

The festival will continue on Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2.

Saturday will begin with the Leaf River Firemen offering a breakfast at the River Valley Complex from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m.

The Leaf River Historical Museum will have several things going on during the day so plan to stop in and see what’s happening.

The Lions Car Show begins at 9

a.m. and runs until 2 p.m. in the parking lot south of the Bertolet Memorial Library.

The various food booths also begin their day at 10 a.m.

The Merry Martha Club will again have a quilt raffle.

The Antique Tractor and Engine show resumes on Saturday, as well as a Cornbag Tournament.

The Leaf River Firemen will hold water fights on Second Street in front of the Bertolet Memorial Building.

Free kids games and barrel rides begin at 10 a.m., along with a Bounce House and slide at the Bertolet Memorial Library.

The Leaf River Lions will hold a free vision screening for kids 6 months to 6-year-old, starting at 10 a.m. inside the Bertolet Memorial Library.

A Tractor Pull begins on Saturday afternoon several levels of competition.

The Badger State Tractor Pulls begin at 7 p.m.

An admission fee is charged for the pulls.

Jokes, pranks commonplace in new country Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK Oregon’s first Mayor James Gale wrote in his diary that there were many jokes and pranks in a new country.

The Internet mentions, “Humans have been telling jokes for a large part of our history. The oldest recorded joke can be traced back to 1900 BC.” “July 1 is an unofficial international Joke Day. This unofficial holiday encourages participants to share their funniest and sidesplitting jokes with the world.”

Now I’ll have to investigate the origin of April Fool’s Day. I again went to the Internet to find out funny sayings our Presidents made.

My favorite one which is still true today was by President Theodore Roosevelt.

“He stated when they call the roll in the senate, the Senators do not know whether to answer present or

not guilty.”

On Sept. 8, 1870, Gale recorded a scene in the circuit court with Judge Canton presiding.

The court had a small stand with three legs. When William Dana came up near the stand Captain Trask screwed his coattail to the stand so when he moved he took the stand with him.

After they released Dana from the stand they fastened a man by the name of Fudge and left him.

He soon moved around the courtroom dragging the stand disturbing the court with the noise.

After the court adjourned for dinner Judge Canton said to Trask he would fine him if he came into court that afternoon.

Judge Thomas Ford, later Gov. Ford, was holding court at the intersection of Third and Monroe Streets.

This is where the apartments are now located south of Riverview Cemetery.

While Ford was holding court some of the lawyers took his hat and carried it over to the log cabin tavern located across the street and pawned it for drinks.

Gale mentioned in those days jokes like this were common.

Earlier at the first house in Oregon owned by Jonathon W. Jenkins, court was in session.

“A man by the name of Adam Fudge was called to the stand. Judge Ford asked his name. Adam Fudge responded (A—dam Fudge).

The program presenter for the “Those Were the Days” session will be the Oregon Depot curator and Oregon historian Otto Dick on Saturday, May 25 at 10 a.m. at the depot.

His program will be centered on his favorite pictures of the Oregon area.

Dick made this presentation at Rock River Center last week.

This was a common laughter cartoon in print.

“Mr. Fudge, said the Judge Ford the court fines you five dollars.

“In this same home owned by Jonathon W. Jenkins, 111 men were tried for shooting the Driscolls, and the jury rendered a verdict of not guilty.”

This trial lasted one day, and was held at the home owned by Jenkins since our first courthouse was destroyed by fire.

It’s difficult to picture a trial of 111 men being held in a private home.

Just a reminder — Gov. Ford was a Democrat from Oregon, Illinois.

He is buried in Peoria.

KB Tough Run is June 29 at White Pines Ranch The eighth annual KB Tough Run has been scheduled for Saturday, June 29 at the White Pines Ranch southwest of Oregon.

The KB Tough Run is the major fundraising event for the KB Fund.

This fund has been established to help those in the community that are burdened by a medical crisis.

More than 70 families have been helped by the KB Fund.

Their needs ranged from expenses related to cancer treatments, chronic illness, accident recovery, special needs therapy, premature births,

and more.

Early registration for the event ends on Wednesday, June 5.

LIBRARY PROGRAM

The Oregon Public Library hosted a program on May 11 for the Eagle’s Nest Art Group.

Library director Hilaree Lombardo and children’s librarian Deborah Herman spoke to the group about the internationally known Eagle’s Nest Art Colony Collection, including the story of how the library got the collection of paintings and sculptures in the early 1900s.

Many stories that surround the collection were also shared, including the theft of one painting, “Cabbage Patch” by William Wendt, in 1991 and the work of the FBI to recover it.

The painting was returned in 1994 to the library and is currently on display.

They have also been on loan to the Art Institute in Chicago and the

Rockford Art Museum for special exhibits.

The story of these artists and their works has been researched and is included in the 2015 book titled “The Art of Oregon” written by local author Beth Baker Simeone.

Copies of the book can be checked out at the library. The book may also be purchased at the library.

The library also has a contemporary art collection of art work by noted local artists, including three works by ENAG founder Harry Nurmet.

The library’s gallery is open free to the public during regular library hours, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

VFW to host Junk in the Trunk sale on Saturday, June 8 The Oregon VFW will host a Junk in the Trunk sale on Saturday, June 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Set-up time is 8 to 9 a.m. on the day of the sale.

Spots for vendors will be numbered.

One table and an open trunk is allowed in each spot.

E.D. Etnyre a presenting sponsor for park district The Oregon Park District has announced that E.D. Etnyre & Co. is an Oregon Park District Presenting Sponsor.

The park district completed its comprehensive plan in 2017 and throughout this process the community identified their interest in additional free programming in a less structured environment.

The recreation department introduced several new and free program opportunities in 2018 with much success.

As a result, the park district was looking to expand, but was unable to continue to fund the opportunities without assistance as a result of a reduction in the nuclear plant property tax assessment and the significant impact a minimum wage hike will have on the district’s overall budgets.

“The Oregon Park District is always looking for ways to provide opportunities for the community,” said Erin Folk, executive director.

“In the summer of 2018 we began offering several free programs in our parks. After the success of these programs we began looking for a local business that would partner to expand upon these offerings to the community.

“E.D. Etnyre & Co. is a family business rooted in the Oregon community,” Folk said. “Their philosophies and commitment to the community made them a perfect fit as our Presenting Sponsor. The sponsorship funds will allow us to expand our Pop Up and Play in the Park, Art in the Park and add several new after school programs that will be free to

The Hunt Club in Oregon recently hosted a fundraiser for The Serenity Shed and raised more than $1,500.

The event was the brain child of Jody Wubbena and Destini Benesh who helped guest bartend at the event.

After proposing the idea for the fundraiser to The Hunt Club, the owners of the bar and restaurant jumped behind the idea and helped Wubbena and Benesh provide piñatas, food and drink specials, raffles and a 50/50 drawing.

“I just can’t thank these girls and The Hunt Club enough,” said Cathy Warren, manager of The Shed.

Master Gardener Plant Sale is June 8 in Oregon University of Illinois Extension Ogle County Master Gardeners will hold their plant sale on the Ogle County Courthouse lawn in Oregon on Saturday, June 8.

The sale will be held during the Oregon Park District’s Farmers Market, located at Illinois 64 and Illinois. 2 in Oregon.

The market will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Master Gardeners’ will have their

favorite plants that they hand selected from their home gardens for sale.

“You are sure to find something to enhance your garden or landscape,” said Elizabeth Sosa, Extension program coordinator. “Expect great prices and arrive early for the best selection!”

Master Gardeners will be available on site to answer questions about plants, gardening, and lawn care.

In their 29th year of ministry, the well-known, and very popular gospel quartet “The Assemblymen” will appear on Friday, May 31 at 7 p.m. at Franklin Grove’s historic H.I. Lincoln building.

Their combination of gospel music and Gospel ministry is legendary on the northern Illinois music scene.

The multi-talented group includes soundman John Tallecksen, who also sings with the group Professions of Faith; baritone Paul Nelson, who doubles as tour bus driver in traveling to events; lead singer Gary Shull, who also does double duty with the Professions of Faith; high tenor David Nelson, who is also one of the founders 29 years ago.

According to the Rock River Trail Initiative, he is the first person to attempt this feat and his effort will serve as a benchmark for the feat.

He began paddling back in 2008 with an inflatable 10 foot boat before finding the Missouri River 340 in 2009.

He registered and raced the first time in 2012 and has not looked back since.

In 2015 he finished the race in under 50 hours and has done so every year since along with several top 5 and top 10 finishes.

He has also completed the South Dakota Kayak Challenge, the Missouri Freedom Race, the Des Plaines River Marathon, the Callie Rohr and the Wisconsin River Race among other events.

His interest in the Rock River stems from training on the Rock from County MM outside Ashippun to Watertown, Wisconsin.

READING MATTERS

Questions while reading increase understanding Teach readers to ask their own questions

For the past several columns we have looked at key reading strategies and how we can talk about them as we read to and with our children and grandchildren.

So far we’ve looked at how we use illustrations and graphics to support our understanding, how we make pictures in our minds as a way to make meaning of what we read, and also how using our background knowledge is a key to comprehending.

For this month let’s consider how asking questions can help as we read for understanding.

In school children are used to answering teachers’ questions or questions that come with a textbook.

There can be some benefits to that tradition.

However, teaching students to ask their own questions will get them reading with more interest and lead to a deeper understanding.

Asking our own questions before

COMMENTARY Mary Gardner Reading Specialist we read gives us a real purpose for reading. Then we read to answer our own questions.

Children have a natural curiosity about everything. We can encourage that by prompting them to ask questions about what they are going to read.

We can read the title and look at any other information on the cover or back of a book.

The questioning might take the form of wondering.

I wonder what the title means. I wonder why there’s a picture of a shark on the cover of a book about a sailboat.

I wonder what ingredients will be needed for this fruit salad recipe.

We should also model stopping and asking questions during reading.

We can stop at appropriate times and check on our understanding.

Do I remember who that character is? Why do you think the author ended the chapter that way?

We can also ask questions about what might happen next.

Once we are done reading there are more questions to be asked.

Children are taught to use the 5 W’s and an H questions: who, what, when, where, why, and how.

These can certainly help us check to see if we understood what we read.

After-reading questions can also include those that lead to further reading to find out more information.

What else can elephants do? Who else has studied the trees in the rain forest? I wonder who invented the

Keep in mind that this is not about asking tons of questions to see how many we can get correct.

Use questions as they come up naturally to encourage talking about what is being read, or even about a video or movie you are watching.

Albert Einstein said “The important thing is not to stop questioning.”

That applies to teaching our children and grandchildren to ask their own question before, during, and after they read.

It also applies to the bigger picture. Encouraging questioning is encouraging thinking and life-long learning.

Isn’t that what we want for our young people beyond school?

Oregon’s Mennen sets new record in the pole vault

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com With Rockford Christian bumped up to 2A and perennial sectional contenders Byron, Oregon and Winnebago in down cycles, Forreston-Polo’s decisive 1A sectional win on May 17 was yet another demonstration of the program’s emergence as the top small school in northern

Illinois.

Sending 13 events downstate and scoring 127 points to 74 for second-place Lena-Winslow, F-P earned in second sectional title in three years, to go along with a runner-up to Rockford Christian last year.

“We’re fortunate to have some really good athletes,” F-P coach Bob Wagner said. “An example of that is Jordan Neuschwander gets hurt (hamstring) and we have to pull him. He would have won the 200, but we are able plug other guys in the relays for him.”

In Neuschwander’s absence, Cailean Davids filled in on the 4 X 100-meter relay. Running with Dom Christensen, Evan Kelsey and

Brady Webb, F-P won at 43.48. They also took the 4 X 200 relay at 1:31.94.

“It wasn’t pretty throwing it together like that, but it worked,” Kelsey said.

What excited Wagner and his team most was the 3:27.6 in the 4 X 400 relay, besting a 3:30 seed and leading three other squads to qualifying times. It was Davids, Cayden Shelton, Kelsey and Christensen taking F-P’s third relay crown.

“I’m speechless,” Wagner said.

“We’ve been talking about doing 3:27 all year.”

F-P picked up plenty of points in the throws with Jace Coffey (156feet-10) and Ethan Phillips (141-3) making state in the discus and Cof-

fey (48-4) and Garett Badertscher (48-8) doing the same in the shot put.

The team got a big surprise upon implement weigh-in when it was discovered their shot was a pound and half over weight.

“We’ve been throwing a heavier shot all year and didn’t even know it,” F-P throwing coaching Steve Christensen said. “Maybe that helped us today. Thankfully, Oregon let us borrow theirs.”

Coffey threw 20 inches over his previous best in the shot and Badertscher also had a PR. Phillips had the rare double of a triple jump (417) and throwing event qualification

“Like Larry the Enticer says, ‘I’m just going to send it’,” Phillips said.

With some help from Dixon high school, Webb hit 22-1 for a season-best in the long jump and third straight sectional title.

“I’ve had some (mechanics) problems, so I went to Dixon to see my old jumping coach (Ryan) Deets,” said Webb, who also won the 100 at 11.17. “Him and JD Gieson fixed eveything. Now, it’s time to get ready for state.”

F-P got plenty of other firsts, with sophomores Bennet Soltow and Shelton showing promise for the future.

Soltow ran 15.71 to win the 110 hurdles, giving F-P its fourth straight 110 sectional hurdle title.

He also took fourth in the 300s. Shelton came from behind to win his

specialty, the 800 in a time of 1:59, his first time under 2 minutes.

Christensen also took second at 11-3 to qualify in the pole vault, but will likely by concentrating all his effort downstate on the three relays.

Other non-qualifying placers for F-P were Kelsey fourth in the 100, Anthony Josephitis sixth in the pole vault and Caleb Scott, Draven Wells, Quincy Williams and Shelton claiming fourth in the 3,200 relay.

In the vault competition contested Wednesday at Oregon, Jake Mennen of Oregon set a meet-record of 14-9.

Another Hawk vaulter, Ethan Gale (2009) had the previous record of 14-3.

“This year has been the most fun and least nerve-wracking,” said Mennen, who is headed downstate for the third straight year. “Its very stress-relieving knowing God is in charge.

When pole vaulting, I try to use the abilities He has given me to glorify Him.”

By the narrowest of margins, the 4 X 100 relay team of Dre Smith, Calvin Smith, Jackson Buck and Brigham Finch kept Oregon coach’s Jim Spratt 18-year record of sending at least one relay downstate. The foursome took third with a 44.34 with 44.38 the qualifying mark.

“It’s been a tough year for us, but I always had a inkling maybe one of our sprint relays could make it,” Spratt said. “I can’t tell you how gratifying it is see that group make it, especially with three seniors.

Even more surprising was the same group bettering their No. 4 seed by three seconds to finish second (1:32.55) in the 4 X 200 relay.

“Since the conference, coach changed handoffs,” Buck said.

“Since Calvin is the fastest, he had him run a bit longer than anyone else.”

In a very close race for the automatic second, It was first-year runner Finch sprinting past Len-Win on the anchor to edge the Panthers, who still advanced on time with a 1:32.63.

“We ran unbelievable splits, with

Calvin in the 22s and everyone else in the 23s,” Spratt said. “It’s a testament to the kids manning up and doing the work. Finchie came around the curve and really turned it on.”

Bobby Youngren rebounded from not throwing 140 feet in over a week to claim a discus qualification with a throw of 143-3 for Oregon.

“One thing that helps here is the brotherhood of different guys. We’ve gotten close to Forreston-Polo,” said Youngren, as F-P’s Coffey could be seen chest bumping all the throwers from other schools.

Oregon placed sixth as a team with 46 points.

“Other than Sully not going down in the 200 (third place, 23.24), we couldn’t have projected this better,” Spratt said.

Nathaniel Schone missed by one spot of making it in the vault with a third place, Andrew Harshman picked up a fifth in the 3,200 and sixth in the 1,600, Austin Ebert was sixth in both hurdle races and Carson Sweeney was sixth in the shot put.

Cyndey Nyderek (34-4) and Abi Hopkins (32-11 ½) competed in the triple jump, but were short of the 35-6 needed for the finals.

until late in the meet and I think they were both hurt by jumping after the 300 hurdles were run,” Schneiderman said.

It was sophomore Brenna Noon highlighting the Oregon girls track and field team, as they took on the best in the state at the 1A meet at Eastern Illinois University last weekend.

Noon captured fifth place in the shot put with a personal best of 40-feet-9 ¾ inch. It was a mark she hit during Thursday’s preliminaries that carried over into the finals on Saturday.

“Brenna was very consistent on all her throws and lived up to her seed (No. 5),” Oregon coach Nick Schneiderman said. “She’s worked hard all year for this and it was nice to have her bring a medal back for Oregon.”

Defending champ and Wisconsin recruit Chloe Lindeman of Fulton won at 47-9. It was the best effort in all three classes.

Noon was the only the only underclassmen to medal, as the other eight places were taken by either juniors or seniors. Her medal makes it No. 11 all-time among throwers at Oregon, with Allison Kereven with 4, Tabitha Smith 3 and Shannon Cullen 3.

In other field event prelims, Jenae Bothe was five spots away from the finals in the shot put with a 35-11.

She also competed in the discus and measured 105-2, with 120 feet or better moving onto the finals.

Schmidt in the 400 (51.3) and 800 (1:51.12) relays. The grouping of one freshman and three sophomores has the chance to improve on that for at least two more years.

“Physically, we were fine, but I thought we put too much pressure on ourselves from expectations,” Schneiderman said. “Instead of running free, our bodies were tight. We have to feel we belong down there.”

Another factor was both relays having to sit in the clerk’s tent for up to 20 minutes, as No. 3 and 4 heats.

In the 100 hurdles, Hopkins closed out a stellar career with a time of 16.43. Nyderek ran the 300 hurdles and finished with a 50.69 clocking.

“It may not have lived up to Abi’s expectations, but making it downstate three out of four years is a great accomplishment,” Schneiderman said.

In the pole vault, sophomore Lyndi Kenney matched her PR of 9-0 and nearly had a make at 9-6. To make finals, 10-0 was needed.

“Lyndi had a good meet and will only get better,” Schneiderman said.

Locally, Byron medaled in the sprint relays and Grace Baldwin placed in the pole vault for Winnebago.

Catlin Salt Fork won the team title with 52 points, followed by St. Joe-Ogden in second with 42. Interestingly the top seven teams were all from the east-central part of the state.

“Maybe next year, we’ll find another meet outside of this area to get more competition,” Schneiderman said.

Track athletes to compete at state meet at EIU

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com With the 1A boys state track and field championship as wide open as it has ever been, Forreston-Polo will be considered a trophy contender.

F-P has the potential to place in several events.

Leading the way is a 1,600-meter relay that is seeded No. 2 to Morrison. With title possibilities in the 3,200 relay and open 400, Morrison is another favorite.

“It’s hard to say with sectional seedings,” F-P coach Bob Wagner said. “It can be deceiving with the weather and if a coach is holding a kid back until the state meet.”

Wagner sees DuQuoin, Salt-Fork and Morrison as the teams to beat.

Other teams to watch out for is Rushville-Industry, Pleasant Plains, and Gibson City, with freshman phenom Aidan Laughery.

Defending champ Colfax-Ridgeview with stars Mason Barr and Tate Walcott had been favored, but Walcott was not listed as state qualifier in the any individual events.

“That’s surprising. He jumped 24 feet last year and is a very good 200 runner,” Wagner said.

His absence in the long jump may open to door for No. 3 seed Brady Webb (22-1). The top seed is at 22-10,

Jace Coffey is seed No. 4 at 156 feet, but like Wagner said, seeds can

be deceiving, as Coffey’s best throw of the year is better than anything coming out of the sectionals.

In the 400 and 800 relays, F-P is favored to advance to Saturday’s finals.

“I think we can improve on our times,” Wagner said. “We’ll have to.

It going to be hot and everyone else will be running fast.”

Last year, Evan Kelsey, Cailean Davids and Webb were part of a 1,600 relay that took ninth place. The 400 relay false started and the 800 relay failed to qualify.

Webb has a No. 11 seed in the 100 with 11.29 needed to medal last year.

Cayden Shelton is listed as the No. 5 800 runner in what is always a competitive 1A race. With 2-time 800 champ Riley Wells of Rockford Christian in 2A, the chance for a state title got much easier.

With a No. 9 seed, it is possible Bennett Soltow could make the finals of the 110 hurdles.

Don’t count out the Oregon 800 relay, which struggled all season until it counted the most. It is a No. 10 seed among 33 entrants.

Pole vaulter Jake Mennen is No. 4, behind three top notch seniors ranging from 15 to 16 feet in what is always a brutally tough 1A event.

In looking at all three IHSA classes, Mennen’s 14-9 sectional mark would be No. 8 overall.

Last year, Ian Hussung brought back Oregon only points, medaling in both the 800 and 1,600.

In a 4-0 sectional final win over Oregon on May 27, the Stillman Valley girls soccer team proved to be at a higher level than the Hawks.

But that result shouldn’t diminish what has been a remarkable rise from only seven total wins in the first two years of the program to playing for a sectional championship and finishing 16-7-1.

“I’m proud of how far we’ve came in three years and even how far we’ve came this season,” said Seger Larson, who started the program from scratch in 2017. “Just because we lost, there’s no reason to look down upon it. We had the support of the school, parents, administration and community. Hopefully, younger girls will want to be a part of it.”

The Hawk faithful, complete with a fan bus, outnumbered the crowd from Stillman Valley and cheered loudly any time Oregon’s offense would move the ball upfield. Unfortunately, it was the Cardinals providing the vast majority of offensive movement on a soggy field in Waterman.

“I thought we overcame the field conditions and handled it well,” SV coach Erin McMaster said. “We dictated play from the get-go.”

With 29:50 left in the first half, Kassidi Schabacker scored for the Cardinals on an open net situation.

Hawk goal keeper Katelin Pudlas got out of position in the slippery conditions, enabling Schabacker to make it 1-0.

“It was just unlucky,” Larson said. “Anything can happen. But, you have to be ready for the weather.”

With the Hawk student section chanting, “let’s go Oregon, let’s go”, Katelyn Byerley got loose and advanced the ball to Leah Watters for a shot-on-goal with six minutes left in the half. It missed, but seemed to fire up the team. Byerley had a good try for a score with a minute left before the break, but it missed the mark.

Hannah Donaldson, who scored the game winner in the sectional OT match against Rockford Lutheran, also had some success in the first part of the game moving the ball upfield.

“I thought we flat out won the last 10 minutes,” Larson said. “The first 30, we looked like we gave up and didn’t want to make mistakes.”

Any hopes Oregon had of carrying the momentum into the second half ended as the Cardinals peppered the goal with shots. SV had a 7-1 edge in shots-on-goal in the first 20 minutes of the second half, with Pudlas, who had 15 saves, stopping each attempt.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals continued to substitute freely and began to wear down Oregon.

“We don’t have the depth they do and they outplayed us,” Larson said. “We had some chances, but didn’t capitalize. They had better ball control.”

With the game winding down, Reagan Wiehle scored off a Schabacker assist. Then, Ballard launched a 30-yard goal over the head of Pudlas for the 4-0 final result.

“We’re tired after playing two overtime games,” Larson said.

Stillman won its eighth straight regional and second sectional in three years.

“We knew Oregon was going to be a tough match up. They took a lot of people by surprise this year,” McMaster said.

Lady Hawks advanced with 2-1 overtime win against Lutheran Oregon High School’s girls soccer team defeated Rockford Lutheran 2-1 in overtime on May 15 at the Indian Creek Sectional.

Oregon’s goal in regulation was scored in the first half unassisted by Leah Watters.

Lutheran tied the game with 1:50 left in regulation to take it to overtime. Hannah Donaldson scored in the first overtime on a corner kick just 1:25 into the period.

Goalkeeper Katelin Pudlas had 15 saves in the game.

Congrats to OHS girls soccer for sectional final Plenty to talk about as spring sports season winds down Too much going on in boys and girls spring sports for adequate commentary, but we’ll try.

Congrats to Oregon girls soccer for a trip to the sectional finals. Talk about surpassing expectations as a 3-year old program.

By the same token, the Hawks met expectations as a legitimate No. 2 sub-sectional seed, virtually equal with Byron and Rockford Lutheran, two teams they beat in overtime on their way to the sectional final.

Stillman Valley proved to be the class of the sectional and at a level that Oregon can seek to reach. One reason SV has won eight straight regionals is that no one has yet to push them. Maybe, Oregon can be that team.

The Forreston girls also won a regional in softball, its first since 2011. Did you know the Cardinals have had seven different coaches (Charles Born, Michael Reagan, Terry Pierce, Jim Kann, Tim Bukoski, Larry Ingram, Kin Sinder) since then?

It is the big bats getting it done on the way to a 17-9 record. In an 8-0 win over Polo in the regional final, Kara Erdmann’s pitching was a major factor.

Playing with basically a freshsoph roster, the Oregon softball team looks to improve on a 6-16 campaign. Signature wins were over Byron and Dixon.

Softball is all about having that one great pitcher, and with the freshmen Trampel sisters, Oregon appears to be in good shape for the years to come.

In the softball trivia category,

how about this from a 1989 regional: Sparland beat Roanoke-Benson 37-36 in eight innings. That still stands as an IHSA record for most combined runs in a game.

Boys Track Sectional It is neat to see seniors get rewarded for all the hard work put in. That was the case for the Oregon boys track and field team at the sectionals.

Three senior sprinters in Jackson Buck, Calvin Sullivan and Brigham Finch had never qualified for the state meet before, but got it done Thursday at Lena-Winslow with freshman Dre Smith in the 400 and 800 relays. Likewise with senior Bobby Youngren in the shot put.

My favorite moment from the sectional took place the day before at the pole vault competition in Oregon. After the vaulters were given the final briefing from the meet officials, Jake Mennen gathered them together and led a prayer.

With so much emphasis on everything other than God when it comes to high-school sports, it was refreshing to witness the conviction Jake has for a spiritual way of living.

bring home a state trophy?

It is a fascinating exercise trying to come up with an answer to that with so many uncertainties at the IHSA state meet. Besides going up against athletes you haven’t seen all year, the validity of sectional seedings comes into play.

Also, some kids have career days and other fall flat. The state meet is the ultimate pressure cooker.

Give me someone like Jace Coffey, who seemingly doesn’t let anything bother him. That was the case last year, as he walked into the discus ring and an unsung sophomore and emerged as a state placer with a PR. For a trophy to come back north, the team will need PR-like performances from everyone. The other key will be advancing all three relays to the finals.

Here a data point from the boys track sectional: if the top three finishers from the NUIC (F-P, Le-Win, Dakota) and BNC (Bago, Byron, Oregon) are tabulated, the NUIC wins 255-168.

With Rockford Christian in 2A instead of 1A, those results are a bit flawed. None-the-less, it was impressive to see the NUIC have the upper hand over three strong BNC programs.

May 13 Kari Ann Jaskiewicz, 49, of Byron, was issued a citation at8:58 a.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred in the 200 block of S. 4th Street.

Landon K. Dallmann, 17, of South Beloit, was issued a citation at 7:31 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred in the 100 block of N. 4th Street.

May 14 Carlos E. Ramirez, 42, of Rockford, was issued citations at 7:13 p.m. for operating a vehicle with a suspended registration and operating an uninsured

motor vehicle. These violations occurred in the 100 block of S. 3rd Street.

Zachary J. Glazier, 36, of Sterling, was arrested at 7:33 p.m. for possession of drug paraphernalia. Glazier was also issued citations for improper parking on roadways and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Glazier was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

May 15 Henry T. Tideman, 75, of Oregon, was issued a city citation at 1:50 a.m. for violation of the Oregon city code for grass and weeds being over the six inch height maximum.

May 16 At 6:50 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the Oregon Laundromat parking lot, located at 210 S. 4th Street involving a 2012 Ford driven by Henry T. Tideman, 75, of Oregon, and a parked 2005 Dodge belonging to Alexander Maysonet, 23, of Oregon.

Tideman was issued citations for failure to give information after striking

an unattended vehicle or property and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Benjamin A. Miller, 38, Leaf River, pleaded guilty May 8 to violating an order of protection. Judge Robert Hanson sentenced him to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections with four years mandatory supervised release. The sentence will run concurrently with a sentence in a Winnebago

County case. A count of domestic battery was dismissed pursuant to a plea agreement.

Jourdan R. Mondragon, 42, Rockford, pleaded guilty May 8 to theft. Judge John B. Roe sentenced him to five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections with one year mandatory supervised release. The sentence will run concurrently with a sentence in a Boone County case.

Mondragon was also ordered to pay restitution of $1,000.

Andrew M. Robertson, 28, Oregon, pleaded guilty May 8 to aggravated

domestic battery. Judge Robert Hanson sentenced him to 63 days in jail and 36 months probation, and ordered him to submit to DNA testing, cooperate with and satisfactorily complete the Domestic Violence Intervention Program, submit to random drug and alcohol testing, cooperate with and satisfactorily complete psychological or substance abuse assessments or treatment as directed, have no contact with the victim and pay total fines and costs of $3,642.

The second pair of defendants accused of beating two men in Chana last month pleaded not guilty May 17 in Ogle County Court.

Rochelle attorney Russell Crull entered the pleas for Patrick Christenson, 27, of Chana, and Stephanie McGlinn, 27, of Byron, at a hearing before Judge John Redington.

The two, along with Amber Koeller, 26, Steven Dodson, 41, both of Chana, are charged with mob action, a Class 4 felony, in the April 20 incident.

All four were originally charged with battery, a misdemeanor, but the charges were later upgraded to mob action.

Redington set preliminary hearing for Christenson and McGlinn on Wednesday, June 5.

Koeller and Dodson appeared before Redington on May 10 and are set for preliminary hearings on May

According to a press release from Ogle County Sheriff Brian Van Vickle, the two victims were found at 10:45 p.m. at the scene of the battery near the intersection of Chana Road and Center Street.

They were provided with medical attention by Oregon EMS and were transported to KSB Hospital, Dixon.

The offenders had left the scene, but deputies located their vehicle and stopped it at 11:35 p.m. as it traveled south on Chana Road and turned onto Grist Mill Road.

Koeller and Dodson were arrested then, and deputies later located Christenson and McGlinn and arrested them.

Dodson, the driver the vehicle, was also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

He pleaded not guilty to that charge at the May 10 hearing.

Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following arrests.

May 13 Gregory Knuuttila, 40, of Cortland, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for improper use of registration.

He was held at the Ogle County Jail on a $15,000 (10%) bond pending a court appearance.

May 14 Trei Sanders, 24, of Freeport, was arrested for domestic battery after deputies and Mt. Morris Police were called at 4:09 a.m. to an address on North Everett Street near Mt. Morris. Sanders was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Deputies responded to a one vehicle accident with an injury at 10:13 a.m. in the 5,000 block of East Illinois 64.

An SUV driven by Pamela Beecham, 54, of Mt. Morris, was eastbound when it traveled across the westbound lane and into the north side ditch before striking a tree.

Beecham was transported to Swedish American Hospital by Oregon EMS for minor injuries.

She was issued citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, improper lane usage, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. The accident remains under investigation.

Thomas Price, 33, of Rochelle, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He was held in the Ogle County Jail in lieu of a$5,106.34 (full cash) bond pending a court appearance.

Joel Dach, 32, of Rockford, for was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for contempt of court. He has a full cash bond of $1,008 and is scheduled to appear in court on June 24.

Dewayne Harbach, 67, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

He appeared in court and was issued a $1,000 recognizance bond pending a court appearance.

Dominic Mireles, 36, Rochelle, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He has a full cash bond of $883 pending a court appearance.

May 16 Brandon Cuddy, 25, of Rockford was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop at 3 a.m. in the 5,000 block of South Freeport Road.

He was also issued a citation for improper lane usage and transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Justin G. Mattson, 22, of Belvidere, was arrested for speeding and driving while license revoked after a traffic stop at 9:19 a.m. on Stubb Road at Tower Road. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he posted bond and was given a June court date.

The pedestrian, Brittany Vyas, 24, of Rock Falls, suffered minor injuries and was transported to KSB Hospital by Dixon Rural Ambulance.

Deputies located Dexter and arrested her for leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, aggravated battery, and reckless driving.

She was held at the Ogle County Jail awaiting a court appearance.

OBITUARIES MARIAN I. BLUMEYER-BARRY Marian Ione Blumeyer-Barry, 96, of Oregon, died on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at the Franklin Grove Living & Rehab Center.

She was born on March 12, 1923 in Pine Rock Township, the daughter of John E. and Carrie (Canode) Schier.

She graduated from Oregon High School in 1941.

Marian married Alvin Blumeyer on July 9, 1943 in Love Field, Dallas, Texas. He preceded her in death in 1997.

She married Allen Barry on Aug. 18, 2004 in Oregon. He preceded her in

death on Oct. 24, 2013.

Marian worked for Kable News in Mt. Morris, then more than 20 years for NIU Lorado Taft Campus as a cook, and then for Tri-County Home Health Care.

She was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church at Paynes Point, and the Oregon VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

She loved to boot scoot line dance, and be in her garden.

She is survived by her daughter, Dixie

(Terry) Hurless, of Chandler, Arizona; two sons, Francis “Butch” (Bonnie) Blumeyer, of Oregon, and Ronald (Angie) Blumeyer, of Mt. Morris; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; sisters, Lillian Guernsey, Anna Mae Fisher, Vera Milliman, Agnes Heller; brothers, Francis and Gene Schier, and infant brother

Robert.

Funeral service were held on May 21 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church at Paynes Point with the Rev. Andrew Kayes pastor of the church officiating.

Burial was at the church cemetery.

Arrangements were completed by Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 110 S. Seventh St., Oregon.

She was born on May 23, 1939 to Gordon and Dorothy (Mumma) Swift.

Susan was employed as the village clerk in Forreston for many years.

She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Forreston.

Susan lived her life around her family,

daycare service in her home and was a member of East Oregon Chapel of the Church of God. She enjoyed traveling to Florida, yard work, and cooking for and celebrating the holidays with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, James (Bobbie) Roberts, of Leaf River; daughter, Debra (George) Cox, of Mt. Morris; many grandchildren; many great grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; brother, Curt (Gloria) Ennenga, of Mt. Morris; and sisters, Mary (Dean)

Shook, of Davis Junction, Shirley (Roger) Unger, of Rochelle, and Katie Ennenga, of Oregon.

She was also predeceased by her parents; daughters, Gloria Pritchard and Barbara Davis; son, John “Huck” Clapper; grandchildren, Stephanie Bormes and Shelly Shelton; brothers, John and Roy Ennenga; infant siblings; and special friend, Jack Riegel.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 1 at 11 a.m. at East Oregon Chapel, Church of God preceded by

Surviving are her two daughters, Lori (Kim) Peterson and Darcy (David) Metz; brother, Jim Swift; three grandchildren, Sarah Peterson, Aaron Metz, and Eli Metz; and five step-grandchildren, Justin (Sarah) Peterson, Matt (Niki) Peterson, Anthony (Steffanie) D’Agnolo, Adrianna“Dina” (Wayne) D’Agnolo and Amanda D’Agnolo.

Susan was preceded in death by her

brother, Jon Swift and sister, Shirley Swift.

Memorial services were held on May 17 at Faith Lutheran Church, Forreston, with Pastor Scott Ralston officiating.

Burial was at White Oak Cemetery, Forreston.
