Store taking measures against COVID-19 New rules, t-shirts, signs and masks coming

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Oregon Supervalu employees will soon have t-shirts that say “KEEP BACK: Social Distancing.”

The store is taking extra measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 as it remains open as an essential business.

Along with shirts, signs are being made and gloves are being worn. Policy has changed to not allow employees to use customers’ reusable bags and returns and exchanges are now prohibited.

“The Supervalu warehouse is not accepting any returns,” Oregon Supervalu owner Jim Kaufman said. “It was a recommendation made to all Supervalu stores. As far as reusable bags, they’re allowed to bring them, but our employees are not allowed to touch them.”

The store is making sure to clean “very regularly,” Kaufman said. The shirts and signs are currently in the design stage. Keeping customers and employees at least six feet apart while shopping is a priority.

“Some customers are good with social distancing, others not so much,” Kaufman said. “Now there’s a case of COVID-19 in Ogle County and we have to get serious. It’s hard because our store

Three Supervalu employees this week told Kaufman that they were no longer comfortable coming into work due to fear of catching the COVID-19 virus.

Over the past few weeks, the store hired extra employees but is now back to a normal level. Many of the hires were college or high school students that currently have extra time with the schools being closed.

Many larger grocery stores offer personal shopping and curbside pickup so shoppers don’t have to go into the stores and risk catching or spreading the virus.

Currently, manpower doesn’t allow for Supervalu to provide that service.

“We have done it for some people that need it, like those at a high risk or people who have been in the testing process and can’t come in themselves,” Kaufman said. “But we can’t do it for everyone.”

This is why the Census is so incredibly important to our community of Oregon.

The State of Illinois collects income tax, sales tax, motor fuel tax, and other taxes from everyone in the state.

The State of Illinois then returns a portion of that money back to each community based on how many people are reported to live in town.

The state gives back $183 per resident.

Oregon has a population of 3,720, which means we receive $680,760 per year to help operate our police department, street department, and city hall.

Once every 10 years the city counts the number of residents it has. That is the count the state of Illinois uses to calculate how much money we get in return…for the next 10 years.

No do-overs. We would lose the state revenue we are owed if we under-count ourselves.

If we only count 95% of our actual population, Oregon would lose $340,000 over 10 years. That is real money which helps keep our local taxes lower and allows us to maintain city services.

So please COUNT yourself, to make sure Oregon receives all the revenue it is owed.

We have one chance every 10 years to make

ourselves count.

If you haven’t yet completed the Census survey, you can still take a few minutes to complete it online at: my2020census.gov.

If you do not have your personal code, the website will help you find it.

COVID-19 UPDATE

New cases have been announced each day since April 2

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The Ogle County Health Department confirmed one new positive case of COVID-19 in the county on Tuesday afternoon, bringing the county’s total to 13.

The individual is an adult in their 70s. Further details about the individuals will not be released to protect their privacy. The individuals and their close contacts are being monitored by the

OCHD. New cases have been announced by the OCHD each day since April 2. Ogle’s first case came on March 30 “This case reinforces the importance of actions the public can take to protect themselves and

prevent the spread in the community,” the OCHD press release said. “The healthcare partners in Ogle County are working closely with the Illinois Department of Health, the Center for Disease Control, and regional partners to monitor, respond and help limit the spread of the disease.”

The press release stressed that individuals who believe they may have COVID-19 stay home and call their health provider first. Symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough, difficulty breathing and/or shortness of breath.

Residents were also directed to stay home and practice social distancing.

Demmer hosted Zoom meeting for local residents

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Illinois State Representative Tom Demmer took to the online meeting medium Zoom on March 31 to meet with local business representatives and residents from Ogle County on how the COVID-19 pandemic is impacting them.

Around 25 people joined the meeting and were shown a presentation

by Demmer on the resources available to them.

He also fielded questions at the

end of the meeting. Members of the Byron, Oregon and Polo Chamber of Commerces were involved with the meeting.

“I want to present you with an overview of some of the programs that are available for individuals, families and small businesses to help with some of the financial impacts of the statewide stay at home order and some of the closures of industries and certain businesses,” Demmer said. “As well as some of the things you can apply for to help your business and community make it through this in a productive way.”

Demmer started his presentation by outlining what is offered through the federal C.A.R.E.S. Act. which was implemented in the days prior.

Applications for forgivable loans are to be administered by local banks. The loans will only be forgiven if the businesses retain their employees. These funds can be used to cover payroll, mortgage, rent and utilities for eight weeks.

The SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loan was also discussed, which can be in amounts up to $2 million at a 2.75 percent interest rate for up to 30 years.

Businesses need to have been in business for at least one year to apply for SBA loans. Demmer also went over how the federal government implemented the available delayed payment of payroll taxes due to COVID-19. “[The C.A.R.E.S. Act] is the largest bill in U.S. history,” Demmer said. “The total financial impact of it is over $2 trillion.”

One state program that may apply to Ogle County and the Sauk Valley region is the Downstate Small Business Stabilization Grants. The grants are up to $25,000 per business. Applicants apply through their city or county. The grants are meant for rural cities and counties.

The state house and senate are currently not in session due to COVID-19. Demmer said reps are still talking about how they can take action and steps to help businesses and residents at the state level.

“We don’t know how long this will last or what the full reach or impact of this will be,” Demmer said. “I encourage you to share suggestions or ideas you might have for things the state can do for small businesses and communities to make it through this.”

During the question and answer portion, Demmer was asked whether businesses should apply soon or wait until towards the end of the COVID19 situation. Due to time frame uncertainty, some businesses don’t know the extent of their needs.

“Don’t wait until the end of April,” Demmer said. “The money is limited. I still think there’s a large amount in funds, but it’s an advantage to get in earlier.”

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator, Polo Historical Society The last two days have been perfect for sitting in the sun on our patio. Someone even left a palm branch on the picnic table from the church.

Our Palm Sunday services have been on the Internet so this is how we celebrated Palm Sunday. It appears Easter Sunday will be the same. Strange Easter season.

But the last two days have felt like spring has finally arrived and it was time for me to get out in the sun and see what is coming up in new flower beds. Some sedum seems to be in this spot and beside it is some hosta.

The rhubarb is looking nicely and I believe I will try cooking some. It has been years since I have fixed rhubarb.

I found a rose that is all coming out and probably is some kind of a climber. I had given up on roses years ago so I am excited.

I will keep my mind busy on flowers and continue to pray for our country. Already our daughter in Wisconsin has lost someone they know and it puts everything in a different perspective. Suddenly this is Carl’s grandfather and Lori’s father who has been lost to the virus.

Our granddaughter Amy who is a doctor keeps us informed and has said, “No more runs to Dixon for a delicious sundae or a frosty.”

We will listen to her and I will keep cooking, writing letters, and face timing on my pink iPad. People are being so innovative and I enjoy what they are posting.

I never had to keep my children entertained in the country since

there seemed to be lots for them to do.

I do not remember my mother having to entertain us in town and we stayed on our own property. We had lots of card games to keep us busy. Remember Touring, Flinch, Authors, and Old Maid.

We had a box of 40 games that is now at Aplington House in the children’s room. It is an antique and had a board game called Flying to Cuba which you would not be doing now.

We had a board game called Carom, I believe. You placed it on top of a card table.

We had two sets of encyclopedias and they were worn from use. This was how we researched and we were avid readers.

Growing up I had use of the library only two blocks away. In the country we subscribed to magazines

for children. Remember Jack and Jill and there were sports magazines for children and young people.

We kept plenty of reading material on hand for those hot days in the summer and winter days when the school was closed.

Now parents rely totally on TV and the Internet and there were no swimming pools either to keep our children entertained. In the fall we made leaf houses. Do any of you even remember what they were and how they were used?

I am content at this age to sit in the sun and reflect back or figure out in my mind where I am going to put my lavender that is waiting to be set out in a new flower bed.

The weather is perfect for spring work and it will keep our minds occupied as our country struggles with the unknown.

1877 Ogle County Reporter an interesting read Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK R. C. Burchell owned the first Oregon Newspaper, publishing the first issue June 11, 1851.

He had purchased the Mt. Morris Gazette and moved it to Oregon.

The first paper was called the Ogle County Gazette and then a few months later he changed the name to the Ogle County Reporter.

Many of the articles and wording in the 1877 Reporter are interesting. Below are a few examples that caught my eyes.

1877 was 12 years after the Civil War, 5 years after the C and I Railroad came through Oregon and 20 years before the first car drove through Oregon.

During the years in the rooms at the First National Bank, members of the Library Board took turns in acting as librarians during the two or three evenings each week the Library was open.

In 1903 Mrs. Addie Welty was appointed as the first salaried librarian.

She served two years and was succeeded by Miss Ethel Herbert, who also served two years. In December 1908, Miss Emily Cartwright assumed the position of regular librarian at a salary of $360 per year and continued in this position for over 50 years. Oregon Lions held annual meat raffle

Illinois State Museum offers COVID-19 collecting initiative

The Oregon Lions Club held its Meat Raffle Drawing on March 27.

One half a hog, four $50 SuperValu gift certificates, 25 turkeys, 25 hams and 20 steak and ground chuck bundles were offered as prizes.

The lucky Grand Prize winner of half a hog was Alex Best.

The rest of the prize winners will be contacted and asked to wait until later this spring, once the current travel restrictions have been lifted, to have their meat delivered to them.

The half hog was purchased by Oregon Lions from Eichmanns, in Seward. The turkeys, hams and beef bundles were purchased from SuperValu in Oregon.

Oregon Lions thank them both for their cooperation during this annual fundraiser and thank everyone who purchased a ticket and supported Lions causes.

The Illinois State Museum (ISM) has announced a new collecting initiative that allows Illinois residents to share stories that reflect their experience during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The project is being initiated for the benefit of future generations.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a vital moment in history, and ISM wants to document how it is affecting Illinois residents through its Share your Story: Illinois in the COVID-19 Pandemic collecting initiative.

ISM is requesting personal stories, written works, artwork, photos, or photos of objects from the people of Illinois to document life during the pandemic.

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com When Illinois Governor J.B. Prtizker initially announced a two-week shutdown of restaurants and bars on March 16 to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Matt Pendergrass didn’t understand the severity.

He figured he and his wife, Jamie, would close and deep clean their six area bars and restaurants and open right back up on March 31.

Now, May 1 is the earliest the inside of their establishments can be opened.

The Pendergrasses announced on April 1 that The Cave in Byron, The Hunt Club in Oregon and Aero Ale House in Loves Park are now open for curbside pickup. They also own Aero Ale House in Byron, Rural on Tap in Rockford and Idle Hour in Mt. Morris. Those three remain closed completely.

“We reopened for two reasons,” Matt Pendergrass said. “The first was the employees. They weren’t working and couldn’t find work. The second was revenue. I have to at least cover these utilities and pre-existing liabilities.”

Curbside pickup is not a specialty at any of Pendergrass’s six restaurants. Matt said they’ve had to add a second cook and utilize two employees to run food out to cars. About 90 percent of income at his businesses come from sales made inside the bars and restaurants.

“It’s a huge impact,” Matt said.

“It’s six bars and six different sets of liabilities. You’re paying for bills as

Matt has lost his partner for the moment. Jamie has been staying home with their 10 and 8-year-old children to help with schoolwork and to watch them.

The closure has forced the couple to try to be innovative through social media and other ways. They recently went into business with Oregon delivery service Chowdown OTown to provide delivery from The Cave and The Hunt Club.

Matt has spent recent weeks filling out every loan and grant available to small businesses through the recently-passed federal C.A.R.E.S. Act.

“I pay thousands and thousands in insurance every year,” Matt said.

“How is an event like this not covered? I think you’ll see a lot of that come into the media. I don’t know who to blame. It would be a game changer if we had it. It’s excluded.”

Matt is unsure if he’ll be able to open back up all six of his restaurants completely when the shutdown is eventually lifted. Some of them, like Aero Ale House in Byron, have expensive overhead costs. More government intervention would help, he said.

Most of the food they had on hand had to be thrown away. At the pre Ale Houses, all the food is made from scratch. Staffing will also be an issue, as he anticipates many of them will take other jobs at places that are hiring like Walmart.

“To fire up six establishments when they’ve been closed is big money,” Matt said. “You have to pay past due bills and get all new products. I’ll have to do something like open in stages. Keep opening tables and rooms as time goes on. It’s like starting all over again.”

Matt grew up in the restaurant business. His dad owned Jay’s DriveIn for 20 years and he helped him at other establishments in later years.

“I grew up working here and seeing my dad go through ups and downs,” Matt said. “That gives me hope that it’ll work itself out. You want everybody in the community to make it.”

COVID-19 is not slowing down local truckers

BY TY REYNOLDS Shaw Media With the COVID-19 outbreak keeping many people at home, there is one local occupation that has seen business pick up: trucking companies.

Normally a more solitary job than most, it’s no surprise that truckers have been less affected by coronavirus than others. “To me, it’s just going as normal, which is nice,� said David Bellows, a truck driver of 30 years who drives for Graphics Arts Express in Oregon. “I’m staying employed, so that’s a definite plus – and I don’t foresee any way things will stop.

You have to move the products, get things where they need to go, and that’s going to continue.�

Because of that, business has been steady, according to a pair of operations managers for local trucking companies. “Our volume usually gets heavier at the end of the month,� said Jim Hopkins of Graphics Arts Express, “but it did increase in some areas.

We handle some of the deli items for Walmart and some cold storage, and that’s doubled by twice as much as companies try to get ahead of it.� “Specialty items have slowed down, but we’ve seen a little uptick and are staying busy hauling meat,� said Mike Fox at Anderson Trucking in Forreston. “I think we’ll stay busy, because I don’t see the need for hauling pork, beef and chicken going away.�

Graphics Arts Express has operated out of Oregon since 1951, and Hopkins has been the operations manager since 2000. He said he has yet to encounter a driver who has been skittish about delivering a load someplace, and credits that with a different mentality than a lot of other occupations.

Hopkins said. “I’ve told all of my drivers that if they’re concerned, we can change schedules around, but so far none of them have done that. “I just think that truck drivers have a different mentality, because we work on our own so much. The government doesn’t subsidize us for anything, so if we don’t get loads to haul or people cancel freights or we don’t make deliveries, we don’t get paid. There’s no insurance policy, so you have to figure it out on your own a way to get by.�

for more than five decades, and Fox has been the operations managers for the last 5 years. Anderson delivers all around the Midwest, mainly in Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and Ohio.

Both Hopkins and Fox have talked to their drivers about precautions they face to keep themselves safe. A lot of places they deliver to have also instituted new measures and procedures for that same reason. “A lot of places are trying to minimize contact,� Fox said. “A lot of times, our drivers don’t get out of the truck anymore; they call the place when they get there and the business will bring out the paper-

work to them.� “A lot of places will have the drivers fill out paperwork asking where they’ve been, where they delivered to, have they been overseas, things like that,� Hopkins said. “Some places are checking the drivers before they check in, taking their temperature and asking if they feel sick. It’s really affecting every little thing you can think of.�

Bellows, who also runs a cleaning service and has seen that business increase as well, normally delivers to Rockford, Rochelle, Dixon and Sterling, after serving as an overthe-road driver for many years. And despite his mostly local route, he says he’s experienced lots of these same precautions a businesses try to be as safe as possible. “A lot of places don’t want you in their buildings now, so instead they’ll bring the paperwork out,�

Bellows said. “And you’ve got to sign coronavirus paperwork; everyone’s got that now. “But honestly, it’s still running fairly smooth. There are longer waits for paperwork and unloading, and the procedures are a little different and stricter when it comes to deliveries, but I haven’t really seen a big problem with it. And I think going down the road, if this picks up and keeps going, I’m sure you’re going to see more standards set into place to be even more cautious and careful.�

Bellows and Hopkins both said there has been one huge advantage they’ve seen on the road. “Not having as much traffic is definitely a plus, so you’re not fighting that, which is nice,� Bellows said. “That’s the only benefit to this,�

Hopkins added. “Chicago traffic is a breeze right now, because there’s hardly any rush hour at all.�

COVID-19 CANCELLATION

June festival was slated for June 5-7 The decision has been made to cancel the Leaf River’s Summer Daze Festival due to the unknown situation with the coronavirus at this time.

The festival was scheduled for June 5, 6, and 7 in Leaf River.

“As of this time everything has or is being canceled. This includes the events like fireworks, the car show, vintage tractor show, tractor pull and all associated concessions,” said organizer Paul Lindstrom. “You may think this is too early but it is the time the organizations are out soliciting donations and contribu-

tions for the festival.

“Also making parade arrangements are done at this time so the decision to cancel was made. There have been contracts signed for the festival that must be cancelled and that also requires plenty of advance notice or financial obligations apply,” he said.

“Some things may be rescheduled but this also takes a lot of coordination to get everyone’s dates open to get them back together,” he continued. “The Leaf River Lions Club regrets having to make such a decision but felt it best at this time.”

Lindstrom said the Leaf River Lions Club may still hold its Pork Chop BBQ if the virus issue has subsided.

“So please watch the papers for further details,” he said.

Trump was so concerned about the election, that he was playing the “cover-up” game, he has a base that can neither see nor hear or are afraid of him.

I’m 86, with some serious health problems and almost afraid to leave the house.

Mahoney says it is likely school won’t resume this spring

Traveling to a vacation home is not considered essential travel, Lee County Sheriff John Simonton said in a news release Saturday morning.

The department worked with the Lee County state’s attorney, health department and emergency management agency; local mayors; and state Reps.

Tom Demmer, R-Dixon, and Dan Swanson, R-Alpha, to interpret the definition of Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s stay-at-home order as it pertains to camp grounds and vacation homes, the release said.

Mahoney said the district’s top three priorities are student safety, communicating clearly and then providing a continuation of learning. Learning has taken a backseat, he said. One question was asked regarding how grades will be given out to students during the closure.

“There will be three grades given, pass with distinction (A-quality work), pass and incomplete,” Mahoney said.

Mahoney said high school juniors who were scheduled to take the ACT test on April 14 will not. The state will offer a free test in the fall. For students who were scheduled to take AP tests, a 45-minute online exam is being developed for some time this

Oregon School District Superintendent Tom Mahoney used Facebook live on April 2 to answer questions in real time about what his district is doing during the COVID19 pandemic.

Among the topics he discussed were the district’s priorities, how grades will be given out on e-learning, ACT and AP testing, prom, promotion and graduation, yearbooks and staff compensation.

As many as 209 people were watching the session at one time. The district is closed until at least April 30.

“I think there’s a good chance we’re closed for the remainder of the year,” Mahoney said. “When the initial closure came, the plan was designed to last as if schools weren’t going to open back up this year. It was a long-term plan.”

Students are currently getting online instruction, he said. Those without access to the Internet are getting paper packets. The school is also providing meals for about 400 students per week. via a pick-up system Initially it was 500 per week, but the school has discontinued its delivery service to protect employees.

“Prom, promotion and graduation are not currently canceled,” Mahoney said. “We’re hoping they can be done if schools come back into session on May 1. We did cancel the prom caterer. If it happens, it may be an opportunity to change what prom looks like.”

There is no plan in place currently to make up days that have been missed due to the recent closure, he said. The choice to go to e-learning over delaying school was an easy one due to uncertainty and fear of students falling behind.

All OCUSD staff will be paid as if it was a normal school year, Mahoney said.

“It was a school board decision,” Mahoney said to a staff member asking the question. “They value you and they want you to know that.”

Mahoney also added that yearbook orders are still being taken for this year.

“I was just talking to someone about that the other day,” Mahoney said. “As of right now, most of the spring section is blank. Looking at whatever ends up there years down the road will be interesting. It’s a historic time.”

Kids, parents turn out to wave to teachers, staff Handmade signs held along Illinois 64

BY EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@oglecountynews.com It wasn’t as long or as elaborate as the typical parade in Ogle County, but these are atypical times.

Oregon School District students lined Oregon and Mt. Morris streets on Friday as staff and teachers from the district drove by to say “hi” to their students—all from a safe distance of course.

“This was something for us to do and get out of the house,” said Megan Miller, as she waited with her daughter, Tinley, and dog Dean for the first parade to enter Mt. Morris at the corner of Brayton Ave and Illinois 64. “It is just nice to get out.”

Staff from the Oregon High School, David L. Rahn Junior High School and Oregon Elementary School drove their private cars, some with decorations attached, as Oregon police escorted them around streets surrounding the main school campus in Oregon before heading west to Mt. Morris along Illinois 64.

“The parade was put together by our teaching staff to help with the social and emotional aspects of learning. We do a lot besides academic work to help with kids’ mental health. For kids to see how much the staff misses them will mean a lot, I think,” said Oregon Superintendent Tom Mahoney prior to the event.

Students were asked to practice appropriate social distancing if they left their homes to watch the parade.

Alexander and Sophia Stombaugh did just that as they watched along with their pup Luna, from the driveway of their home in Mt. Morris.

Sophia, 10, even made a handmade sign that read “Happy Easter” with a bunny on it that her 5-year-old brother held for everyone to see.

A limited number of staff will be available starting Wednesday to answer any questions about

Other campgrounds and resorts are delaying season openings.

Lake Louise Campground, located north of Byron, has delayed it opening to May 1, and pushed the end of it season to Oct. 31, president of operations Dee Pizer said in a news release.

All of its clubhouses and indoor facilities are closed. The seasonal fee due date now is April 15, and that is the date any future decision or

additional news will be released about the site, Pizer said.

Simonton also expressed his disappointment in a recent survey from Unacast, a company that collects and analyzes the GPS location data of phones; Lee County received a grade of ‘D’ on social distancing efforts.

“In essence, I am asking citizens to abide by this order and stay at their primary home to continue to help us all mitigate the exposure and transmittal of this deadly virus.”

Area schools are currently closed until at least April 30 due to state mandates to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Mahoney said when the original closure came, his schools prepared as if they would be closed for the remainder of the school year.

Oregon High School senior Trey Woolsey will play his college basketball at Olney Central College.

Woolsey averaged 26.5 points, 9.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game for the Hawks, garnering first-team all-Big Northern Conference, AP AllState honorable mention and IBCA All-State second-team honors.

Olney Central College is a public community college in Olney, Illinois. It Trey Woolsey confers associate degrees and technical certificates and also offers online four-year degrees through its affiliation with Franklin University.

Olney Central College is a member of the Illinois Eastern Community Colleges district The Knights went 24-7 in 2019-20, going 13-5 in conference, losing to Southwestern Illinois College in the District 16 quarterfinal.

IHSA says there’s chance spring sports could resume W ith sports leagues all over North America scrambling to come up with scenarios to start up their seasons, it is only appropriate that the Illinois High School Association’s do the same. Here is the latest (April 1) from the IHSA’s website: “Even though Illinois schools will remain closed through April 30 following the March 31 announcement by Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, we remain optimistic that a May 1 return to school, followed by a to-be-determined acclimatization practice period, can still result in a truncated spring season that culminates with IHSA State Series tournaments and the crowning of state champions in June.

“In its discussions thus far, the IHSA Board of Directors has been highly supportive of creating an exemption to the IHSA Season Limitation By-law to allow spring sports to play into late June, but competing into or beyond July is not being considered at this time.

“We are also realistic in recognizing that any further school postponements, or the cessation of physical school attendance for the remainder of the year, will almost certainly result in the cancellation of all remaining IHSA sports and activities this school year.”

What this means is there is still a chance for spring sports to take place. Though it seems like we are in an unending quarantine, early May could bring a ray of sunshine to the whole proceedings.

is usually inclement. This weekend, when Oregon track and field would have hosted the huge Gebhardt-Worley meet, the forecast is 50 and rain.

If high school sports are able to start up, it will be interesting to see what kind of shape everyone is in. Have they been able to impose enough self-discipline to work out or does today’s athlete need a coach riding them?

In their defense, though, it has to be discouraging working out on your own when the possibility for no sports at all still exists. Throw in other activities with question marks like prom and graduation and it can really play with a young person’s head.

Especially for seniors on their last hurrah.

Even without a coronavirus, the final weeks of the senior year ticks down very, very fast. Now all of a sudden, you have been socially restricted, there is pondering of future plans, and you don’t have that familiar gathering place on a weekly basis that a school had provided for the last 12 years.

What will be the attitude of kids should sports get the okay for May 1? Will sports even mean that much anymore? Will there be a sense of gratitude for being allowed to return the classroom for one last time, versus the usual thought of “can’t wait to get out of this place”?

As a non-high schooler for 43 years, I even miss being around the local scene, be it for watching sports or socializing with athletes, coaches and parents. Prep sports are special.

The United States is virtually the only country in the world that has such an encompassing highschool sports program. That might by a good column idea to determine how this all got started here, but not anywhere else.

The very first high-school state finals of any kind in Illinois was an 1893 track and field meet.

That makes sense, as track was a sport long before football and basketball.

Even if a school did not participate in the state meet, it was commonplace in the old days for county-wide track meets. They aren’t as big of deal now as they used to be, as people have the mobility travel anywhere in the state.

Time was, a long trip was to one side of the county to the other. A quarantine probably would have been much easier to pull off then.

About the same time, there was some prep football and basketball being played here, but the illustrious basketball tournament didn’t begin until 1908, with Peoria beating Rock Island.

Sadly, this year’s boys tournament will have an asterisk next to it.

Helen Ruth Girton, 99, of Oregon, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 2, 2020 at Oregon Living and Rehab.

She was born in Dixon on Oct. 8, 1920, the daughter of William and Ruth (Hardesty) Girton.

Helen was a hard-working woman who loved being outdoors and enjoyed discussing the weather. She loved cats

TAMMY R. SIGLER Tammy Rae Sigler, 57, of Oregon, the darling daughter of William and Lorretta Sigler, passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, April 4, 2020 surrounded by her loving family, joining her Savior Jesus Christ.

Born July 23, 1962 on Scott Air Force Base, she was the daughter of William and Lorretta (Bone) Sigler. Tammy was a 1984 graduate of Oak Lawn Community High School. She was employed by Village of Progress, Inc. and VOP Janitorial Services of Oregon, working at Byron Nuclear Power Station, Mt. Morris Clinic, IDOT Rest Facility at Paw Paw, and Unimin Corp and FN Smith Corp in Oregon.

April 5 Jeremy Guentert, 38, of Byron, was arrested for violation of an order of protection. Guentert was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

April 6 Destiny R. Whipkey, 24, of Davis Junction, was arrested at approximately 12:30 p.m. for driving while under

the influence of alcohol after deputies responded to the intersection of Illinois 64 and Maple Grove Road.

This was in response to a check welfare request by a passing motorist who reported a vehicle parked at that location with front end damage and a female in the driver’s seat.

Whipkey was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she posted bond on her charges and was released.

Whipkey is due to appear in Ogle County Court at a later date.

ILLINOIS STATE POLICE One hurt in two-vehicle rollover accident on Illinois 38 The Illinois State Police investigated a two-vehicle crash on April 5 at 2:30 p.m. on Illinois 38, just east of Interstate 39.

Terrence L. Bowers, 55, of Rochelle, was driving a 2017 Dodge Caravan eastbound on state Illinois 38 and attempted to pass a 2013 Hyundai Elantra driven by Bruce D. Ellison, 64, of Loves Park, when Bowers lost

control of the vehicle and struck the front of Ellison’s vehicle, causing both vehicles to overturn.

Bowers was transported to the Rochelle Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and cited for improper lane usage.

Ellison refused treatment. ISP was assisted on scene by Rochelle Police Department, Ogle County Sheriff’s Department, and Rochelle Fire Department.

Homer W. Sell, 95, lifelong area resident, died Friday, April 3, 2020 in Pinecrest Manor, Mt. Morris.

He was born on July 8, 1924 in Mt. Morris, the son of Orville and Marjorie (Walker) Sell. He married Dorothy Helfrich on June 9, 1963 in Oregon; she died in 2002.

Homer was a 1942 graduate of Oregon High School and had worked at Kable Printing in Mt. Morris, Wood Bros. Manufacturing in Oregon and at Castle Rock State Park.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Oregon and its Men’s Group and also attended Immanuel Lutheran Church, Dixon and was a life member of the Oregon Kiwanis Club.

Source of Drinking Water The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity.

Contaminants that may be present in source water include: - Microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife.

- Inorganic contaminants, such as salts and metals, which can be naturally-occurring or result from urban storm water runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming.

- Pesticides and herbicides, which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, urban storm water runoff, and residential uses.

- Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can also come from gas stations, urban storm water runoff, and septic systems.

- Radioactive contaminants, which can be naturally-occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities.

Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the EPAs Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.

In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, EPA prescribes regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. FDA regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health.

Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population.

Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. EPA/ CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. We cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

Source of Water: POLO Based on information obtained in a Well Site Survey published in 1994 by the Illinois EPA, several potential sources are located within 1,500 feet of the wells.

The Illinois EPA has determined that the Polo Community Water Supply’s source water is not suspectibile to contamination. This determination is based on a number of criteria including; monitoring conducted at the wells; monitoring conducted at the entry point to the distribution system; and available hydrogeologic data on the wells. Furthermore, in anticipation of the U.S. EPA’s proposed Ground Water Rule, the Illinois EPA has determined that the Polo Community Water Supply is not vulnerable to viral contamination. This determination is based upon the evaluation of the following criteria during the Vulnerability Waiver Process: the community’s wells are properly constructed with sound integrity and proper siting conditions; a hydraulic barrier exists which should prevent pathogen movement; all potential routes and sanitary defects have been mitigated such that the source water is adequately protected; monitoring data did not indicate a history of disease outbreak; and the sanitary survey of the water supply did not indicate a viral contamination threat. Because the community’s wells are constructed in a confined aquifer, which should prevent the movement of pathogens into the wells, well hydraulics were not considered to be a significant factor in the susceptibility determination. Hence, well hydraulics were not evaluated for this system ground water supply.
