Iron Mike to move to courthouse lawn

An Oregon landmark will be relocated to ensure its continued existence.

The Ogle County Board voted Tuesday evening to move Iron Mike, a century-old drinking fountain, from the sidewalk on Washington Street (Ill. 64) just west of the intersection with Fourth Street (Ill. 2) to the courthouse lawn.

In 1877 the Illinois Humane Society began erecting public drinking fountains.

They commissioned a design “both pleasing and practical” by which water would flow at three levels, first accommodating thirsty people at the top, then horses and finally dogs and small animals near the ground level.

Oregon’s cast-iron fountain by presented to the city and installed by the Ogle County Humane Society in 1901.

City of Oregon officials decided the fountain should be moved after it was narrowly missed by a vehicle involved in a traffic accident a couple of years ago.

The widening of the intersection about 10 years ago brought the fountain within two feet of the traffic at the busy intersection.

In its new location on the north side of the courthouse lawn, the fountain will be the focal point of a seating area with two benches and brick pavers around it.

Flood leaves damage, debris at White Pines Park

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Recent flooding caused damage and sparked clean-up efforts at the White Pines State Park.

Site superintendent Matt Hoogerwerf said the rising floodwaters from the Pine and Spring Creeks last week swept mud and debris onto roadways and parking and picnic areas.

“When I came to work Wednesday, I couldn’t get in because the entrance to the park was flooded,” said staff member Elmer Stauffer.

With the ground still frozen, the water had no where else to go, he said.

The roads have been cleared but the fords at the park remain closed to traffic.

Hoogerwerf said winds and ice over the winter months broke a large number of limbs and branches from trees.

“Clean-up will begin soon now that it has warmed up,” he said. “We couldn’t do much about it earlier because everything was frozen to the ground.”

One large limb broke a railing on a footbridge over the Pine Creek.

Temporary repairs have been made, Hoogerwerf said, with permanent repairs slated to be completed later this spring.

Oregon Police Chief Darin DeHaan said an Ogle County deputy responding to the call observed the SUV around 1 a.m. traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed on Ill. 64 between Mt. Morris and Oregon.

The deputy turned around to follow the vehicle and found it had crashed on Liberty Hill.

Denning, the driver, was found outside the vehicle which had rolled several times.

Oregon police were assisted with the crash investigation by the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department accident reconstructionist.

An Oregon man died in a one-vehicle crash early Monday morning after he fled from the scene of a residential burglary in Mt. Morris.

Joshua Denning, 34, was pronounced dead at KSB Hospital, Dixon, where he was taken by Oregon ambulance after he was ejected from the vehicle involved in the crash on Ill. 64 on the west side of Oregon.

Police said Denning was one of three people who burglarized a home in Mt. Morris.

Mt. Morris Police Chief Jason White said a caller to 911 reported at 12:57 a.m. that several intruders were inside a home in the 400 block of North McKendrie Avenue in Mt. Morris. The caller, who was not at the home, said the intruders were threatening the home’s occupant.

When police arrived three people ran out of the house. Police arrested one of them, Sarah Hensley, 32, of Oregon, at the scene, and two men ran from the scene and drove off in an SUV parked

DeHaan said the vehicle’s other occupant, Jason Marks, 44, of Oregon, had fled the crash scene on foot.

At approximately 4:30 a.m., Oregon officers were called to the area of Fifth and Franklin Streets for an unconscious male, identified as Marks, lying in the yard.

Marks was transported to a Rockford hospital for a medical evaluation by Oregon Ambulance.

He was subsequently arrested by Mt. Morris Police Department and transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Hensley has been charged with residential burglary, a Class 1 felony, and Marks has been charged with residential burglary and home invasion, a Class X felony.

Both remain in the Ogle County Jail.

Based on additional information gathered from this incident, Oregon police also charged Marks with burglary from a motor vehicle, a Class 2 felony, from an incident that occurred on Jan. 8 in the 300 block of North Fourth Street in Oregon.

According to the Illinois Department of Corrections, both Denning and Marks were paroled from the Illinois Department of Corrections in 2017 after being convicted on multiple charges.

Hensley was on probation after pleading guilty in November to theft, trespass to a home and trespass to a vehicle.

Referendum asks voters to fund resource officer City, school district are sharing cost

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com City officials are asking Oregon voters to approve a tax hike early next month to help pay for a fulltime school resource officer.

A referendum will be on the ballot for the April 2 Consolidated Election So far the program, which started Jan. 3, appears to be working out well for everyone involved.

Oregon Police Sergeant Randy Cropp told the city council March 12 about his first two months on the job.

“I really enjoy the students,” he said. “99.9 percent of them are great kids.”

Cropp said most of his time is spent at the high school, with a few hours at the elementary school.

As the program develops, he said, the junior high, in Mt. Morris, will be added to the mix.

School Superintendent Tom Mahoney said having Cropp in the building has made the students and staff feel safer.

Police Chief Darin DeHaan said a “big case came together” because

Sgt. Randy Cropp students felt comfortable talking to Cropp.

The city and school district entered into an agreement last fall to create the position in the wake of an incident at Dixon High School last May when a student was taken into custody by an SRO after firing shots at a teacher during graduation practice in the gym.

According to the agreement, the school district will pay 70 percent of the cost, and the city will pick up the remaining 30 percent.

The referendum asks for a maximum increase of six cents per $100,000 of equalized assessed valuation for police protection to cover the city’s share.

Mayor Ken Williams said the

city will not levy at the maximum, however, because only two cents is needed to fund the SRO. State statutes require the referendum question to be worded with the maximum allowable amount, he said.

“It won’t let us ask for less,” he said.

Williams said the two-cent increase translates into $19 to 20 per year on a house valued at $100,000.

That will bring in an estimated $26,000 to $28,000 per year, he said, the amount needed for the city’s portion.

If approved, the tax increase will appear on property tax bills in 2020.

Williams estimated last fall that the start-up cost for the first year of the SRO would be just under $90,000 for Cropp’s salary and benefits and the necessary equipment.

The city’s portion, around $28,000, is coming from the General Fund.

Mahoney said the school would pay its share from the Tort Fund.

The city council bought a used 2014 Dodge Charger for the SRO’s use.

During the summer, when school is out, the SRO will work as a patrol officer for the city, Williams said.

The officer will also be available to fill in for other officers when they are on vacation, reducing overtime costs, he said.

Duties of Oregon’s School Resource Officer The duties of the SRO include safety and security, mentoring, and law enforcement.

Safety and security includes reviewing camera systems, making sure exterior and interior doors are locked for security throughout the day, being in the lunch room with students, and investigating possible school threats.

Mentoring includes discovery of off-campus crimes reported by students, daily interaction with students and staff, answering law enforcement questions, and talking to drivers education classes.

Law enforcement includes responding to law enforcement issues at school, helping administrators identify if student behavior is criminal or not, address unsafe driving before or after school, develop relationships with elementary students, and assisting as liaison with other agencies.

The tall and the short of it were both represented at the “Change Their Luck” dog-rescue event, held at Oak Lane, on South Daysville Road, southeast of Oregon, on March 16.

Change Their Luck included a meet and greet with adoptable dogs from two rescue groups: Cause for Paws, an all-breed rescue group made up of dedicated volunteers, who open their hearts and their homes to provide a safe haven for orphans coming from animal control, high-kill shelters and owner surrender situations and 4 Greyhound Racers, a registered, non-profit charitable organization dedicated to finding caring, committed homes for retired racing greyhounds.

4 Greyhound Racers brought three adult greyhounds and Cause for Paws showcased three puppies that were rescued from Missouri, and now available for adoption.

First mayor arrived a year before city was founded Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK James V. Gale, Oregon’s first mayor moved to Oregon from Concord, New Hampshire in 1835, one year before Oregon was founded.

He died on Aug. 3, 1881 and is buried at Riverside Cemetery.

He wrote an extensive diary which included a drawing of his first log cabin he built in 1835.

He stated there was more sociability among our early settlers than when a country is older and becomes more densely settled.

He writes about our early settlers who located in Ogle County, who they visited, who visited their house, and included many interesting local events.

The diary I have a copy of is 130 pages in length.

There are several words not commonly used today where my old Webster’s Dictionary came in handy (no, not the Internet).

The following is from his diary.

“Our early settlers prepared the way for others who generally reap the benefits of the frontier.”

“The first settlers have many privations to contend with. The first work is to build a log cabin, a stick chimney laid in clay mortar, the cracks chinked and mudded, logs cut out for doors and windows, with ground or puncheon floor and a roof made of shakes and poles laid on them to keep them in place.

“Very little furniture is used, among the first articles of furniture a woman wants is a sink that is frequently made by a stump of a tree dug out.

“At first we live in one room till we get able to build a double log cabin, with a ladder to go upstairs.

“After all this is done then we break up a few acres of land then we commence living.

One new country is enough to settle.

“It is harder for women than men, they endure more hardships especially where they have seen and been in good circumstances, but for all these privations there is enjoyment in a log cabin and a new country.”

“Everything is wild, scenery new. The people are more sociable, all on a level. They make the best of everything and try to be contented with everything that comes up.

“We have been through with all these privations, have stemmed the storm and can now look back with some pleasure to know how a country is made.”

“It requires a great deal of patience to settle a new country, to wait for settlers to come in and to look forward for better times.

“To look back it seems strange from that time to the present, 1871, to see how the country has improved. When I came here Chicago was not much larger than Oregon now is, and no railroad within 1,000 miles.

“As years have rolled on, year after year, the country has been continually filling up with people from most every state in the Union and from many foreign countries. In 1835 we knew every man within 20 miles of us.”

Auto repair shop in Oregon reopens after owner recovers from major illness An Oregon business has reopened after a fivemonth hiatus while its owner recovered from a major illness.

Hometown Auto Repair, 89 Daysville Rd., is currently open part-time, owner Grant Sketo, of Forreston, said.

He plans to be full-time again in the near future.

“I had to close my shop last October for cancer treatment, and I’m just now getting back to work,” Sketo said.

He was forced to close for awhile because of side effects from chemo and radiation.

A well-known painting from the Oregon Public Library’s Eagle’s Nest Art Gallery collection is on tour in Europe.

The Portrait of Ralph Clarkson by Joaquin Sorolla-y-Bastida left the gallery on Feb. 15, headed for the National Gallery in London, England.

On March 11, the portrait was installed for the Sorolla: Spanish Master of Light exhibition that runs from March 18 to July 7.

The painting will then travel to the National Gallery of Ireland for the Joaquin Sorolla: Spanish Master of Light exhibition from August 10 to Nov. 3.

The portrait was a personal gift from Sorolla to Clarkson, who then donated it to the Eagle’s Nest Art Gallery in 1918.

Clarkson was a founding member of the 1898 Eagle’s Nest Art Colony in Oregon, which features many art

works or art colony members.

This is a unique piece of Sorolla’s work because it was completed in Clarkson’s art studio and unknown to the art world for years.

A Polo man is hoping to start a singing group that can perform at local venues.

Dave Sowinski is looking for people of all ages who want to sing for the love of it.

“I really enjoy singing. There are a lot of people who enjoy singing,” he said.

His plan is to meet, possibly at the Buffalo Township Hall in Polo, and practice singing for fun and with an eye to performing at local senior centers and nursing homes.

He envisions the group, com-

prised of people of all ages, singing harmony with all genres of music.

A veteran, Sowinski plans to donate any money the group would raise to Wounded Warriors.

He has tried this venture in the past but it proved less successful than he hoped because too few people turned out.

This time he’s hoping for a bigger response.

SCHOLARSHIPS OFFERED Pinecrest offers scholarship; deadline to apply is April 1 Applications are now being received for the James E. Renz Pinecrest Memorial Scholarship.

This $1,000 scholarship strives to honor and recognize a graduating high school senior who, through unselfish acts and future plans, has demonstrated a commitment to healthcare, social work, or the works of divinity.

Eligible seniors will either be an Oregon High School senior, member of a Church of the Brethren congregation in northern Illinois or Wisconsin, dependent of a Pinecrest employee, or a home school or private school student from within the Oregon School District.

The application deadline is Monday, April 1.

The Pinecrest Board of Directors established the scholarship, first awarded in 2014, to recognize the lifetime contributions of Renz, which include 49

years on the board, 24 years as secretary.

Applications for Performing Arts Guild scholarships are now available at the Oregon High School guidance office or can be downloaded from the website at performingartsguild.com.

This year’s Northwest Illinois Audubon Society annual banquet and program on Wednesday, April 10 features “A Nature Photographer’s Journey” by David C. Olson.

The banquet and program will be held at Highland Community College, Student Conference Center Building H in Freeport.

For the past two years, hundreds of people have spent a spring evening walking through Oregon in search of sweet chocolate treats and

About 40 participating merchants provide the chocolate treats and have donated an item for one of the baskets.

This family event has proven to be a way for members of the community to get introduced to the variety of shopping and services that Oregon has to offer.

With two successful years of experience, the Oregon Together Festi-

vals, Events, Dining and Shopping Team is proud to bring “The Walk” back and it is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever.

The format is pretty simple.

Walkers will go to one of several pickup points to receive a map of the participating businesses.

BY REITA NICHOLSON Administrative Assistant, Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department reports that there has been some confusion recently about recycling programs in Ogle County and the future of those programs.

The OCSWMD oversees various recycling programs in the county and gives this clarification.

The comingled recycling drop-off containers located in Byron, Forreston, Monroe Center, Oregon, and Rochelle, and surrounding decking will be removed in late May. These containers are for household recyclables such as cardboard,

paper, magazines, cans, bottles, plastic jugs, and glass bottles and jars.

This program is being cancelled due to massive cost increases to haul and process recyclables.

Due to global markets and the extremely low value of U.S. recyclables due to contamination, limited domestic processing and recycling capacity, it has become too expensive to continue the program.

The OCSWMD will continue to monitor markets and options to replace this program, but currently there are no viable options.

Users of this program are encouraged to contact their waste hauling company to see if they offer curbside recycling at their location, or to con-

tact OCSWMD for other options.

For anyone who currently has curbside pickup of recyclables, this service will not be affected and is not being cancelled.

Those individuals can still put out recyclables at the curb and they will be hauled away by the waste and recycling service.

For questions about how to recycle properly at the curb, call OCSWMD at 815-732-4020.

In addition, the monthly residential electronics recycling program at the OCSWMD will not be affected and is not being cancelled.

The OCSWMD will continue to partner with Dynamic Lifecycle Innovations in Onalaska, Wiscon-

sin, to collect and process residential televisions, computers, computer hardware, and other electronic material from Ogle County residents.

The next scheduled electronics collection is Friday, March 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 909 Pines Road in Oregon.

Antique show offers new, veteran vendors

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com New vendors, along show veterans, will be featured at the 69th Oregon Woman’s Club Antique Show on Saturday, March 23 and Sunday, March 24 at the Blackhawk Center, 1101 W. Jefferson St., Oregon.

Show manager Kathe Wilson said the event will feature six or seven new vendors this year, including a unique category.

“For the first time ever we’re having a fine arts dealer offering antique paintings,” she said. “We’ve never had that before.”

Show times are Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Oregon Woman’s Club, as a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, sponsors this show as a major fund raising event and uses the proceeds to help fund various community projects and charities.

The Blackhawk Center on the Oregon Schools campus offers ample free parking, handicapped accessibility, and a huge area for the 52 antique dealers from Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, and Iowa to display their merchandise for sale.

Quality antiques from the early 1800s through the mid-1900s, include all areas of collecting – furniture, glass, china, pottery, toys, primitives, textiles, jewelry, dolls, silver, decorator items, fine art, and more.

Items will be offered for all collecting tastes and budgets, for both the new and advanced collector.

The food concession will be provided by the Chana United Methodist Women.

The menu includes a selection of sandwiches, chips, desserts, and beverages.

Mary Lou’s Crystal & China Repair, Joliet, will be on hand both days to repair damaged heirlooms “while you wait.”

Hack’s Auction & Realty Services, Pecatonica, will offer verbal appraisals of small treasures for $5 per item on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This will be the third year for the Woman’s Club to invite a local area not-for-profit organization to have a representative at the show.

READING MATTERS

Encourage youngsters to visualize what they are reading Last month’s column addressed why we teach reading strategies to children in school.

Then we examined how we can encourage our children and grandchildren to use illustrations and photographs to increase understanding of what is read.

What happens when we have text with no pictures? One strategy for those texts is to visualize.

Let’s explore the ways we can encourage the use of visualizing.

The reading strategy of visualizing can be defined as listening to or reading the words and making pictures in our minds to go with them.

This again goes back to the idea mentioned last month that it is the reader’s job to try to make sense of and understand whatever text is being read.

We can tell young readers that we need to understand what the author

That, after all, is the whole purpose of reading.

A big part of understanding what we read is to be engaged in the reading.

We must be alert and aware of what the words mean and what is happening.

One way we do this – probably automatically – is to create our own pictures in our minds of what we think the author is trying to say.

This is the reason movies made from books are often disappointing.

If we’ve read the book first we have our own ideas about how the characters and settings might look and often the interpretation of the

movie makers doesn’t match.

One way visualizing can be taught is to have children focus on their five senses as they read.

We can ask them to tell what they see, hear, taste, smell, or feel as they read.

This offers an excellent opportunity to also discuss quality descriptive writing.

If the writing is done well the reader can see, hear, taste, smell or feel what is in the text.

If we can’t do all of those things the writing may not be as strong.

Nonfiction authors help us visualize too.

If a book told us that a dinosaur’s tooth was as long as a banana we can more easily picture that in our mind and better understand how big those teeth were.

Or if an author wrote that an elephant weighs as much as a school bus it is easier for us to make the

comparison.

As we are reading in our daily lives, we can notice good descriptive writing and we might also take note of how we create images in our mind to go with the words.

We can then share this with our children and grandchildren.

If you are reading something together, it might be fun to ask them to tell you what they are picturing first.

Then we can compare what they visualized with our own ideas.

All readers need to know that there are things they can do to help themselves as they try to make meaning of text.

It is definitely good to verbalize the strategies we use and why.

Enjoy having a conversation with your children or grandchildren about how you use visualizing to help you understand what you are reading!

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com It’s the third year of Oregon girls soccer and the program continues to gain traction.

Fresh off a 5-15-2 campaign, there are 29 girls out, the most ever, and many of them have the experience of being around all three years.

“Hopefully, we’ll be more confident and have stronger bodies,” Oregon coach Seger Larson said. “Our skill level is up and they have a better understanding of what I want in a game.”

In the first year, Oregon only scored eight goals. Last year, that was quadrupled to 32 and many of those same offensive players are back.

“That will be our strength,” Larson said.

“We’ve never had the fastest person on the field. This year, we should have more speed up top and be passing better.”

Junior Olivia Lambrigtsen, the leading scorer from last year, gives the Hawks a definite threat on the offensive end.

Joining her up top will be senior Katelyn Byerley.

“I’m hoping they can build chemistry together,” Larson said.

In the middle field are returners Hannah Donaldson and MyKenzie Beitel, both

seniors.

Claudia Reckamp will be back on the defensive end after missing last season with a torn ACL. Another plus is getting Katelin Pudlas after she sat out her junior year.

“We will have her back at goal. MyKenzie did a good job filling in last year, but it will be better to have her on the field,” Larson said.

Positioned at outside midfield will be sophomores Madisyn Byerley and Leah Watters. A big help on defense will be Megan Buttens.

“We have a good mix of upper and lower classmen,” Larson said. “The younger girls can listen to the older girls that have been here three years.”

Alyssa Theisen, a key cog on defense and the core of the program the last two years, was lost to graduation.

“She will be hard to replace. She was extremely knowledgeable and a good leader,” Larson said. “On defense, we still need a lot of work. It will be important that everyone is working together.”

Larson sees Dixon, Rockford Lutheran and Stillman Valley as the teams to beat in the conference. Oregon won two conference games last year.

Team environment to be key for Oregon softball

It will be a new face directing the Oregon softball program.

David Duke replaces Jamie ReVelle, who stepped down after five years (2009-12, 2016-18) as coach.

Duke grew up in Franklin Grove and attended high school in southern Missouri. After serving in the military, he moved back to this area and has been in Oregon since 1994, working for the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).

His softball resume includes starting the Oregon Avalanche traveling program, along with Nate Rogers and John Hackman. The 3-year endeavor has 10-U through 18-U teams. Duke coaches one of the 14-U squads.

Prior to that, he assisted the Oregon Park District with youth softball. He is also a collegiate umpire.

“We’re starting to develop the

girls,” Duke said. “We haven’t had a seed program in the past. There just hasn’t been a lot of focus in Oregon on softball.”

Duke inherits a tough task at the varsity level with no seniors and only four juniors.

“The big thing we are working on is keeping a team environment,” Duke said. “We want to develop an atmosphere where no one person is above another.”

To that end, Oregon will not have captains or anyone designated as MVP. “We want them to cheer each other on,” Duke added. “As coaches, we won’t hammer them for making mistakes, because we know they will.”

Of the 19-person roster, all but two girls have played the game.

Besides the small numbers, a big concern is using a roster primarily of underclassmen against other varsity teams.

Oregon will be unable to field separate jayvee and varsity teams.

“Initially, we’ll dress 15 for varsity,” Duke said. “When the weather get nicer, we’ll have a jayvee game for those that didn’t get a lot of playing time.”

Pitching is the key component for any softball team and the Hawks will rely on twin freshmen, Mia and Lena Trampel, along with junior Lily Garncarz, whom Duke said is consistent in the strike zone.

Junior Sam Merrill and sophomores Ashlyn Kitzmiller and Ella Martin bring back some varsity experience.

“We have our work cut out of us,” Duke said.

Oregon’s first conference game is tentatively scheduled for March 18, at Winnebago.

“Stillman Valley and Rock Falls will be the teams to beat,” Duke said.

“Watch out for Dixon too. They will be much improved.”

Marcos baseball program is trending upward

It’s year number three of the Polo baseball program and things continue to trend upward.

There are 22 players out, including seven freshmen.

“We’re rolling right along,” Polo coach Jeff Sands said. “Hopefully it will continue to build up. It’s a good sign having seven freshmen out.”

The only drawback is not quite having enough personnel to field both varsity and fresh-soph teams.

“We will have jayvee innings after the varsity game,” Sands said. “How much we play will depend on how many innings we can get in before it gets dark.”

Sands feels the Marcos strength could on the mound.

“We have four guys than can throw strikes,” he said. “In high school, if you can throw strikes instead of giving up walks, you have chances to win games.”

“He does awesome job for us and lets very few passed balls get by,” Sands said. “He is a real force at No. 3 and has power from gap to gap.

Other teams might look to put him

on base instead of facing his bat.”

Another returning senior is Lucas Hammond, whose speed is an asset in center field.

“He does a nice job for us and we’re expecting another good year from him,” Sands said.

Braiden Soltow rejoins the squad after taking a hiatus his junior year.

Sands plans to use his athleticism as an infielder, outfielder and pitcher.

Tucker Mumford also returns after a 1-year absence. He will be in the out field.

Junior Ramsey Shroyer could be the top pitching prospect. He will also spell Young at catcher.

With Trevin Woodin gone at shortstop, there was a big hole to fill and sophomore Gavin Zell steps into that role.

One potential loss for Polo is Brady Clark, who would have batted No. 2.

The sophomore recently cracked a vertebrae and it is uncertain when he will be physically able to play.

After a 1-12 record in 2017, the Marcos improved to .500 last year and finished in the middle of the conference.

Forreston and Freeport Aquin were head and shoulders ahead of everyone and Sands sees more of the same.

“Aquin and Amboy will be good and Forreston always puts it together,” Sands said.

State tournament did have some good games

L

ast week’s column had some unfavorable things to say about the IHSA state basketball tournament.

To be fair, let us celebrate some outstanding 3A and 4A state final games over the weekend, especially the championships bouts.

There was local interest with Rockford East, who had the misfortune of going against an Evanston team that shot lights out.

It was a sophomore for Evanston making a remarkable 7-of-8 baskets from beyond the arc to put East in a hole they could never recover from.

How do you stop that? It seems like the 3-point shot has become what basketball is all about, with all the focus placed on it.

The E-Rabs, who we learned during the TV broadcast are called that because is stands for East Red and Black (school colors), came back the next day and made an admirable run against Chicago Curie in the third-place game.

Why does the IHSA continue to insist on having third-place games?

Other than the competing teams, nobody cares and it looked to me that even Curie wasn’t that interested in playing.

Of the 4A finalists, East was a lesser team against three real heavyweights. Advancing through a weak

sectional and super-sectional, East caught some breaks in making it to Peoria.

But, as Oregon coach Quinn Virgil told me once, so much of making it to state is luck. That really is true.

Nonetheless, East’s story of getting that far is a feel-gooder for a onceproud school starved for success.

In the mid 1970s, East had some of the best athletes northern Illinois has ever seen, including a 1974 football team that was better than anyone in the state that year and remains the measuring stick for any program in NIC-10.

Their track teams were legendary were the wealth of athletes going through their doors.

But, for the last few decades, changing demographics in Rockford was a major factor in East becoming a doormat in sports.

My favorite game of the tourney was the overtime 3A championship between East St. Louis and Chicago Bogan. It had it all – shot blocking, scintillating plays, last-second hero-

ics, excellent ball handling and athleticism off the charts.

A good barometer for me on the interest level of a game is whether or not my wife watches it. She was all in this year on the 3A and 4A tourney.

I have a feeling there are other casual fans like her that eagerly watched Michael Jordan do his thing for the Bulls, but are relatively ambivalent to the sport of basketball.

With East St. Louis and Belleville West winning titles, the Chicago area was shut out for the first time since the IHSA went to 3A and 4A classes in 2008.

As we close the book on the 2018-19 basketball season, what stood out most to me was Polo’s 7-year stretch of 20-plus wins. To have that kind of consistency for a school not noted for a strong basketball heritage is saying something.

Sauk Valley Media published its girls all-area teams in Saturday’s paper and once again it was a case of everyone getting a participation medal.

Among the 16 local teams, 63 girls were mentioned, an average of four per school. There were first, second, third and fourth teams, with another 43 named honorable mention.

Rock Falls had seven by itself, with even bench-warmers honored.

The A.P. all-state teams only have a first and second team, along with a handful of honorable mention.

Spring Sports Spring sports are finally getting underway this week. Well before this, Oregon pole vaulter Jake Mennen has been off to a fast start.

In qualifying for the indoor state meet this Friday at Illinois Wesleyan, Mennen cleared 14-0 at Westwood last week. The 2-time outdoor state qualifier nearly made 14-6 and is ranked No. 4 in 1A. The favorite downstate will be Kyle Kruthoff of Erie-Prophetstown, who has gone 15-6.

Local fans will have the chance to see Kruthoff and Mennan compete against each other at the Gebhardt-Worley Invite in two weeks.

The other Oregon athlete to be competing at indoor state is shot putter Brenna Noon. Her mark of 37-1 is seventh best in girls 1A and tops among any sophomore throwers.

With the way she is throwing, the potential is there for her to become the best girls thrower in school history. Considering Tabitha Smith, Allison Keveren and Shannon Cullen have each won three or more state medals, that would be an accomplishment.

EXTRA ENFORCEMENT

Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle announced Monday that during his department’s participation in the St. Patrick’s Day Enforcement period, deputies issued 53 citations for offenses including: • four arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol, • two arrests for no valid drivers license, • 18 citations for speeding, • five citations for no seat belt, • four citations for improper lane usage,

• three citations for no insurance, • three citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, • three citations for no valid or suspended registration, • two citations for distracted driving (using a cell phone), • eight citations for other various traffic offenses.

“We continue to strongly enforce traffic laws for one reason – to save lives,” VanVickle said.

The Illinois State Police District 1 Captain Matthew Hodgdon reported that troopers wrote eight tickets and 17 warnings from late March 15 through early March 16 at Illinois 72 and 251 during a Roadside Safety Check for the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.

Moments later deputies were notified of a car versus pole just north of the hit and run.

At the car versus pole, deputies arrested Melvin Wilton, 21, of Rochelle, for driving under the influence of alcohol. He was also cited for leaving the scene of an accident, failure to reduce speed to avoid and accident, and improper lane usage.

Wilton was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Virginia Dyer, 70, of Byron, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after a traffic stop at 10:17 p.m. in the 11,000 block of East Illinois 64. She was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Deputies responded to the intersection of Baseline and Mulford Roads at 5:45 p.m. for a single vehicle crash with injuries.

Nicholas Miroballi III, 24, of Belvidere was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. He was also cited for improper lane usage, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, and driving on the shoulder.

Due to his injuries, Miroballi was transported to Rochelle Community Hospital and given a court date.

Citations were issued for alcohol or drug violations other than DUI, occupant restraint violations, and drivers license offenses.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following arrests.

March 11 Sergio Garcia, 45, of Rochelle, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He posted $450 full cash bond and was released with no further court dates.

Neopatra Hawkins, 22, of DeKalb, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Hawkins posted $156 full cash bond and was released with no further court dates.

March 12 Zachary J. Popp, 24, of Mt. Morris, was arrested at 9:41 p.m. for failure to register as a sex offender. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held pending a court appearance.

March 13 Margaret Curtis, 62, of Lee, was arrested for driving while license revoked after a traffic stop at 10:49 a.m. in the 17,000 block of East CresShe was also issued ton Road. a citation for no front registration plate and was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond.

Sreenath Kanneganti, 27, of Middleton, Wisconsin, was arrested for an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Kanneganti posted $506 full cash bond and was released with no further court date.

Casey Phillips, 32, of Milledgeville, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop at 11 p.m. in the 12,000 block of West Pilgrim Road.

A passenger in the vehicle, Samantha Arnold, 32, also of Milledgeville,

was arrested on an outstanding Carroll County warrant. She was also cited for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Phillips and Arnold were transported to the Ogle County Jail where they were held in lieu of bond.

March 14 Deputies were dispatched at 2:39 a.m. to the area of Rt. 38 and Grove Street in Creston to assist EMS with an unconscious male subject who was involved in a domestic dispute.

After an investigation, Tyler Griffeth, 18, of St. Charles, was arrested for domestic battery. Griffeth was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Quavion Scott, 23, of Freeport, was arrested for two outstanding Ogle County warrants for failure to appear and petition to revoke.

He appeared in court and was released on a $1,000 recognizance bond and a $3,000 recognizance bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on March 29 for failure to appear and on March 12 on the petition to revoke.

March 15 Norman Bryant, 64, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. His bond of $3,867 was reduced to $2,200 during a court appearance. He posted bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail with a court date of April 29.

Manuel Sago, 29, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. His bond of $618 was reduced to $20 during a court appearance. March 16 Matthew Bonnell, 29, of Polo, was arrested for disorderly conduct after deputies investigated a report of a disturbance at 2:45 a.m. at 1460 S. Lowell Park Rd. in rural Polo. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond Deputies attempted to stop a vehicle at 11:21 p.m. near Blackhawk Road and Colfax Street. The vehicle continued to the 200 block of Sumner Street where it finally stopped.

March 18 Jose Saenz, 30, of Sterling, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He appeared in court and was released on a $1,000 recognizance bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 29.

Aryiel Basaldu, 24, of Forreston, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop at 9:14 a.m. in the 5,000 block of West Illinois 72.

She was also cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, speeding, expired registration, possession of cannabis, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Basaldua was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond.

March 9 Seth G. Seidelman, 33, of Oregon, was issued a city citation at 5:30 p.m. for unlawful burning. This violation occurred in the 800 block of Jefferson Street.

March 11 Tanya S. Eldira, 50, of Oregon, was arrested at 7:04 p.m. for driving while license suspended. Eldira was also issued citations for no valid registration and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. She was transported to the Ogle County jail. These violations occurred in the 400 block of Madison Street.

March 12 At 8 a.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the parking lot of the Oregon High school involving a 2013 Nissan owned by Ranae C. Leamanczyk, 48, of Mt. Morris, which was struck by an unknown vehicle while parked there over the past two days.

Dixon woman hurt in crash A Dixon woman suffered minor injuries Monday afternoon when the van she was driving struck a utility pole in Grand Detour.

Ogle County Sheriff’s Police said Hallie Diveley, 23, of Dixon, was northbound on Ill. 2 at 2:32 p.m. when a suspension malfunction occurred, causing her vehicle to veer into a utility pole.

She was transported by Dixon Rural EMS to KSB Hospital, Dixon, for treatment of minor injuries.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by Dixon Autobody, Illinois Emergency Management Agency, and ComEd. The accident remains under investigation.

She was born on Oct. 21, 1928 in Baileyville, the daughter of Ervin and Dorothy (Hartjie) Kilker.

Phyllis married Lawrence John Ascher on Aug. 7, 1948.

Five candidates are seeking four four-year terms as commissioner on the Oregon City Council.

Public offices currently or previously held: I started my current role in January 2015 as I was appointed by former Mayor Tom Stone to replace Tom Miller as Commissioner of Public Health & Safety.

Mr. Miller retired before his term was over. I ran and was elected in the April 2015 election.

I retained my position of Public Health & Safety after current Mayor Ken Williams was elected.

What is the main issue facing the city council and what do you plan to do about it?

No issues, a challenge. Economic growth.

Oregon is a special place with so much to offer. We just need to keep working to show everyone what Oregon is all about.

Competing to draw in new business and residents is a challenge we face, like so many other areas.

The new city council coming in will need to work together to find that perfect blend of economic growth that will allow Oregon to remain a financially viable and economically sustainable community.

I want to focus on the vital task of attracting good jobs and opportunities for our residents. We will need to resourcefully think outside the box, looking to be more creative with what we have.

I will continue to work with the Planning Committee I chair, to help things run smoother for our residents.

These next four years I want to cooperatively involve myself even more with my fellow commissioners, to lend a different perspective to their departments.

I will ask the same of them.

I am asking the residents of Oregon

The people of Oregon have made huge investments in our community over the past four years.

There is a renewed spirit of collaboration and volunteerism which has resulted in many visible improvements to our city.

What can’t be seen, however, is the “can do” attitude among everyday citizens which has resulted in new businesses, events, and renewal.

City government has worked hard to ensure the conditions are present to allow this to happen. That attitude has been “how can we help?”

The main issue facing us now is to maintain this course.

I pledge to remain heavily involved in conversations and decisions to encouraging private investment, to strengthen small business opportunities and practices, to conservatively invest city finances into projects which improve our economy and quality of life.

I will continue to look for ways to communicate and collaborate with our other public and civic organizations to move Oregon forward.

The main challenge facing the Oregon Park District is how to continue providing an adequate menu of recreation opportunities for people of all ages.

This is becoming increasing difficult due to the reduction in funding due to the reduction in EAV of the Byron Nuclear Plant which is a major supplier of funds for the Oregon Park District.

The Oregon Park District is also facing a substantial increase in labor costs due passing of the new Illinois Minimum Wage law.

1. Aged water mains and lead service lines plague most of the village; the majority of the fire hydrants cannot be used to extinguish fires because the main water lines that supply them are undersized and unable to provide adequate supply of water.

We have been able to find and apply for government funding to replace these deteriorated and inadequate systems at a very little cost to the village.

2. Reduce utility costs - changing our street lights to LED. 3. Revitalizing the business district – the use of the newly established BDD funds to provide help to the businesses and the village to improve the buildings and the infrastructure of our business district.

4. Improvements of the village ordinances - an ongoing task.

We as a board, need to always keep trying to find ways to reduce budget spending.
