The Oregon Park District and Oregon Elementary School are joining forces to create a new art program for children.

Park district, OES team up for art classes The Oregon Park District has teamed up with Oregon Elementary School Art Teacher Jordan DeWilde, to offer a new program for 8 year olds and up.

DeWilde will help participants create a variety of art projects inspired by artists Brad Eastman, David Shillinglaw, and Bailey White.

Students will earn how to apply stenciling and lettering techniques to create their own art with designs, characters, and lots of color. They will make drawings, paintings, and use “spray paint” to create different works of art throughout the month.

“Each week they will discover a new artist and explore how to apply some of their style with their own unique ideas,” said Tina Ketter, superintendent of recreation for the park district. “At the end of this class, they will take home all of their amazing artwork, including their own painted canvas.”

Classes will be held at Oregon Elementary School in DeWilde’s classroom each Tuesday and Thursday from March 5 through March 21 from 3:15-4:30 p.m.

The fee is $33 for residents of the Oregon Park District and $40 for non-resi-

dents.

The deadline to register is Tuesday, Feb. 26 at the Nash Recreation Center or by completing registration over the phone by calling 815-732-3101.

Music Class The park district is also teaming up with Aireloom Music to present Feel the

Vibration—a new program for ages 5-8 years.

“Don’t miss the opportunity for your little one to learn about music,” said Ketter. “Each week students will make a different instrument from recycled/ re-purposed materials with Aireloom Music Studio. Some of the instruments will include: a Sound Sandwich (kind of like a kazoo); Pipes of Pan (like a Pan flute); and a Coffee-Can Cuica. The cuica is a musical instrument that originated in Africa.

“Join us for this fun class and learn about vibration, rhythm, beat and pitch,” Ketter said.

Classes will take place at Aireloom Music Studio located at 122 S. Wesley Ave., Mt. Morris. The class runs each Thursday from March 7-21 from 4-5 p.m.

Registration fee is $43 for residents of the Oregon Park District and $52 for non-residents.

Registration takes place at Nash Recreation Center in Oregon or by calling 815-732-3101.

The deadline to register is Thursday, Feb. 28.

Team Kate was set up to support 16-year-old Kaitlyn Marschang, a junior at Polo High School, as she

battles small cell ovarian cancer.

Items are requested for a live auction, silent auction, and raffles.

In addition to the expense of cancer treatments, Kate has had multiple surgeries in Madison, Wisconsin, which requires frequent trips and stays there.

She is the daughter of Ray and Rebecca Marschang and has a younger sister Allissa.

Winter Lecture Much More than Just the Jarrett Prairie: The Many Natural Areas of

the Byron Forest Preserve District Sunday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m.

The Byron Forest Preserve District will be offering the third of their free 2019 Winter Lecture Series on Sunday, Feb. 24 beginning at 2 p.m. at the Jarrett Prairie Center Museum located at 7993 North River Road, Byron.

Russell Brunner, Superintendent of Land Management with the Byron Forest Preserve District, will provide background information and an overview of the natural features of each of the District’s best known and lesser known preserves.

The district owns and manages about 2,000 acres of natural areas divided up amongst nine different preserves that have been protected for the preserva-

tion of specific habitats, wildlife and public enjoyment.

The program will show examples of the many rare plants, insects, birds and other animals that live in our protected prairies, woodlands and wetlands. These natural areas are some of the jewels of Ogle County.

Oregon High School will perform this year’s spring musical “The Drowsy Chaperone” from Thursday, March 7 through Sunday, March 10 at the Oregon High School auditorium, Room 106.

The Thursday through Saturday shows will start at 7 p.m., and the Sunday matinee will start at 2 p.m.

The doors will open 30 minutes prior to each performance.

The seating will be general admission, and tickets will be available only at the door. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $8 for students.

“The Drowsy Chaperone,” written by Lisa Lambert, Greg Morrison, Bob Martin, and Don McKellar, is coined as a musical within a comedy, which is apparent from the very start of the production.

The audience is introduced to a man in his apartment, looking to enjoy a quiet evening alone.

As an informed lover of musicals, he turns to his favorite 1920s era record, “The Drowsy Chaperone.”

As the man and the audience watch the record come to life on stage, an exciting plot begins to unfold.

Famous actress Janet Van De Graff is to be married to her fiancé Robert Martin.

However, there are several forces determined to prevent this marriage from taking place.

Meanwhile, the man in his apartment is more than happy to pause to poke fun at ridiculous scenes and reflect on poignant ones.

The group of OHS students that make up this cast are talented and have been working on the show since the beginning of January.

They are supported by a pit orchestra consisting of high school students, school faculty, and local musicians. Consider supporting the students and community by coming out for a night of engaging and witty fun.

Variety of memorials grace Courthouse Square Structures date from 1891 to 2015 Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK Structures on the Ogle County Courthouse Square today span a period of 128 years from 1891 to 2015.

Our present courthouse built 1891; this courthouse graces the center of Courthouse Square.

Other structures on the square include the following.

Courthouse Memorial Cannons, 1900: The bases of the cannons read “Let Us Have Peace” and “To perpetuate the memories of the soldiers.”

Originally, it was planned to have two matching 100 pound Parrot cannons.

Before they could be moved up the hill from the railroad siding to the courthouse, a group of young men celebrating Admiral Dewey’s victory at the Battle of Manila Bay placed too much powder in one of the cannons.

When the fuse was lit, the cannon exploded, sending a 500 pound chunk of the cannon into the back yard of a house in the next block.

The barrel of the cannon is now located at Riverside Cemetery.

The community waited two years for a replacement cannon.

Iron Mike, 1901: “The new drinking fountain for man and beast purchased for the city by the Humane Society has arrived,” read a newspaper article.

Humans, dogs, and horses all have quenched their thirsts at this fountain called Iron Mike.

The name Humane Society of Illinois wraps around the bottom of Iron Mike.

Laura Fessler loved animals and organized the Ogle County Humane Society. She was responsible for securing the iron drinking fountain in Oregon and later in Rochelle in 1915.

This fountain is still operational.

Taft’s Soldiers Monument, 1916: Located on the east side of the Courthouse Square, its a favorite camera shot for many people visiting Oregon.

Lorado Taft designed this in 1911. It was finished and dedicated during World War I.

The Civil War infantry soldier on the left is looking north toward home, and the other soldier is a Civil War calvary soldier looking south defiantly with his hand on the hilt of his sword.

This memorial honors veterans who served in the Civil War, Mexican War, War of 1812, Spanish American War, and later World War I names were added Kennedy Memorial, 1966: What? A memorial in Oregon for a Democrat?

Our present jail, 1969: This one story brick building with a basement was built to accommodate 51 prisoners, with separate quarters for men, women, and juveniles, and it has a fully equipped kitchen.

The present jail was constructed during the administration of Sheriff Ed Lang.

This was the fourth Ogle County Jail. The first jail lasted six years, the second jail lasted 28 years, and the third jail was used for 94 years.

The new Fallen Soldiers Memorial dedicated May, 11. 2005: This memorial is located on the

north courthouse lawn.

In 1913 a group headed by Henry Joy met and decided on the name Lincoln Highway.

A 1915 map shows the route start-

ing at New York and ending at San Francisco, a distance of approximately 3,389 miles.

In Ogle County, the Lincoln Highway passes through Rochelle and Creston.

A sign at the Lincoln Highway Museum in Franklin Groves reads New York 999, Frisco 2,390, Chicago 93, and Clinton 53 miles.

Cyndee Schaffer collaborated with her 91-year-old mother to write a book based on the letters that her mother sent home to her family while serving as a WAC (Women’s Army Corps) in Europe during World War II. The award-winning Mollie’s War (McFarland Publishers, 2010) is the result of that endeavor.

Members of the Women’s Army Corps (WACs) were the first women other than nurses to serve overseas in World War II. Drawing upon excerpts from Mollie’s letters written home during the war, this presentation provides a romantic, yet frightful, glimpse into the life of a woman in uniform during this crucial time in history.

This presentation details Mollie’s experiences from basic training in Florida in October 1943 to the dramatic moment when the Statue of Liberty came into view upon her return in November 1945.

Bank donates to Serenity Hospice & Home Stillman Bank recently ended its Purchase with a Purpose Debit Card campaign in which a $1 donation was made to local charities with every Stillman Bank debit card transaction up to $20,000.

Serenity Hospice & Home, Oregon, was one 10 non-profit organizations throughout the Rock River Valley to receive a $2,000 check from the program.

Founded in 1984 as Ogle County Hospice, Serenity Hospice & Home provides an interdisciplinary team of trained hospice personnel to create and maintain a plan of care.

Serenity offers the patient and family a home-like environment, while providing the full complement of Hospice’s comfort-oriented care and services.

Services include pain and symptom management, 24-hour nursing care, assistance with tasks of daily living, friendly visits from volunteers, spiritual and psychosocial counseling for patients and their loved ones, and bereavement care and support for surviving family members.

Rockford University’s Spring 2019 Forum Series continues with a free lecture from American historian and author Ronald C. White, Ph.D. on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. in Maddox Theatre.

White will speak about his latest presidential biography American Ulysses: A Life of Ulysses S. Grant, which has won the William Henry Seward Award for Excellence in Civil War Biography awarded by the Civil War Forum of Metropolitan New York.

The biography was a finalist for the Gilder-Lehrman Military History Book Prize. General David H. Petraeus (Ret.) wrote, “Certain to be recognized as the classic work on Ulysses S. Grant”.

White is one of today’s most astute biographers of Abraham Lincoln. He has written three award-winning and bestselling books on the 16th U.S. president, offering new insights into this fascinating historical figure.

Dear Editor, Let’s go back to last year, when the subject of closing Sixth Street was voted on by the Oregon City Council.

[It was approved] even after numerous folks, residents of Oregon, spoke against closing Sixth Street and two longtime business owners begged the council not to close the street or allow the jail to be built in our downtown.

Both business owners would and have done many things to help Oregon, usually free or at very little cost to our town.

Three hundred thirty-six residents signed petitions asking the city fathers not to close Sixth Street.

However, three of the city fathers chose to pay no attention to the citizens’ request.

They voted to give the county the right to close Sixth Street and construct the jail, to ignore the citizens who voted for them, asking not to allow Sixth Street to be closed.

These same three council members

are now running for re-election to our city council, asking you to vote for them again.

If you signed petitions, spoke against, or just did not want Sixth Street closed, think about this.

I urge you to think about how they ignored you and our two big local businesses that begged them not to allow the county to change our city.

They paid no attention to your concerns, had a deaf ear on your thoughts.

When you have council members who pay no attention to their voters, you have no voice in your city government.

Think hard on who you vote for.

The county has over four city blocks that have been removed from the tax rolls in the city.

I have lived here for 60 years, operated a small business for 30 years. We raised our family here, as did my children.

My wife was born and raised here, we loved Oregon.

Having served on the city council for 28 years, over 20 years as mayor, and six years on the county board, I have

Katelyn Byerley has been selected as Oregon High School’s Senior of Distinction for January.

“Katelyn is an exemplary student and person. She was an intricate part of advocating to establish a girls’ soccer program,” said Ranae Leamanczyk, OHS English Department, who nominated Byerley. “When she was only a sophomore, she presented evidence and a speech to the school board, persuading them to allow it. She also is an avid volunteer in community service, which includes making blankets for nursing homes.

“Katelyn is involved in cross country, track, girls’ soccer, and student council. She is in my dual credit College Writing class and not only submits nothing less than her best writing, but also goes the extra mile to work with other students in the class to improve their writing,” Leamanczyk said.

Employees at Oregon High School are asked to nominate any senior who displays qualities and talents they wish every student possessed and/ or have great grades and are involved in service to both school and community.

Hawks come back with state wrestling medals

BY RANDY HOLLAND Four Hawk wrestlers qualified for the IHSA State Individual Championships and all four came home with medals.

Oregon residents may have noticed the sirens early Sunday afternoon as the fire department and the Oregon police department escorted them to a reception at the high school gym.

Seniors Noah Paul (132 pounds) and Chase Clark (152) and junior Jacob Milliman (113) all took third place, and sophomore Andrew Herbst (106) finished fourth.

Milliman was fourth last year and it was the first medal for the others

The four medals ties the school record matching the 2000-01 team’s effort.

There are three years when the Hawks have brought home three, all in the early 2000s.

Head coach Kip Crandall had a perspective on that.

“When you start comparing your accomplishments to Oregon teams from that era, you are starting to see a team that is on to something,” he said.

Crandall pointed to the great support that each of these wrestlers have gotten from their parents and from the entire system that starts in the club program and goes through the junior high.

“We have great coaches at every level, parents who are knowledgeable and involved, and kids that are beginning to see what it takes to get to the top and are willing to put in the effort,” he said.

Paul and Clark were delighted to end their high school careers the

way they did.

“What a great way to go out” said Paul. “I beat some tough kids and got some revenge. It was a great weekend for our team.”

Paul had two pins in the tournament.

Clark, who had three pins in the tournament including in the third place match, was proud of how he wore down his opponents.

“I wrestled my match and I broke them”, he said. “The whole team had great intensity on the mat and we got lots of energy from the fans. It was really something.”

Intensity is the word for it. Oregon floundered on Thursday, winning just two of six matches and dropping all four wrestlers to the wrestlebacks.

But Friday was a brand new day and the Hawks were on fire. They won 14 straight and 17 of 18 over the next two days, the lone loss by Herbst in his third place match.

Crandall was really proud of that.

“To get over the disappointment that you are not advancing down the first place side and come out and put together a streak like that against the top wrestlers in the state is nothing short of phenomenal,” he said.

Herbst wasn’t disappointed with his fourth place finish.

“I wanted another shot at Mylin but I don’t have a pouty face at the end of this day,” he said. “I got here and wrestled hard. I will be back.”

Joel Mylin of Aurora Christian was the 106-champion and has beaten Herbst twice by a score of 3-1.

Milliman said this year was “way better” than last year’s.

“Winning my last match felt good.

And so did coming from behind for a last second win,” he said.

Herbst and Milliman both had two pins in the tournament.

All the wrestlers acknowledged the support they have received from their parents.

Clark’s parents took him to practices all over the area, sometimes two in a day. “I got to wrestle with the best for years. I was ready for this. It is just too bad it took me four years to get here,” he said.

Only two teams in the tournament had more medalists than Oregon. Top ranked Aurora Christian had two first places, a second, a third, and a fourth.

Sixth ranked Belleville Althoff also had five; a first, a second, and fourth, fifth, and sixth place medals.

Both are private schools with a large and heavily populated area to draw their wrestlers from. Twelfth ranked Fairbury Prairie Central tied the Hawks with four on the podium, two champions and two fifth places.

Thirteenth ranked Heyworth sent three to the championship mat and won two. Second ranked LenaWinslow-Stockton took two fourths and a fifth, and fourth ranked Vandalia had two fourths and a sixth.

Third ranked Dakota had a champion and a fifth place, fifth ranked Rock Falls had one third place, seventh ranked Orion had one champion, and ninth ranked Rock Island Alleman had a third place.

Tenth ranked Byron won two medals. Tyler Elsbury was second at 285 and Colton Ingram took third at 195.

Eighth ranked Auburn was shut out of the medal mix. Oregon is ranked near the bottom of the honorable mentions.

Twists & turns on the road to medal rounds First up for Herbst was Julian Decker of Wilmington. Herbst wasted no time, stacking Decker over the front for a pin in 48 seconds.

It was not that easy against sixth ranked Tavius Hosely of Tolono Unity in the quarterfinal.

Hosely caught a heel pick with just over a minute left in the first and escaped late in the second. In the third down 3-0, Herbst sat out for an escape late for his only point and he dropped to the wrestlebacks with a 3-1 loss. Hosely finished second in the tournament.

Gage Lopez of Auburn awaited Herbst in the lower bracket. Herbst hit a high crotch and went out the back and added two backpoints.

On the restart, he snapped on a half nelson and turned Lopez over the front for a fall at 1:12.

Herbst got things going on Saturday morning against third ranked Maddux Blakely of Dakota.

Herbst had a low single in the first period and a switch halfway through the second for a 4-0 lead.

He hit a five point move at the start of the third and a four pointer as time expired to take an 13-3 major decision.

In the semifinal he met seventh ranked Matthew Minick of Althoff and lost the first takedown but reversed with ten seconds left to tie it.

He rode tough through the second and broke the tie when he sat for an escape with thirty seconds left and a 3-2 win. Minick took the fifth place medal.

It was fifth ranked Billy Tay of Ridgeview on the third place mat and it was another hard fought match.

Herbst lost a quick takedown and repeatedly stood but could not escape.

Herbst worked hard on top in the second but could not score. He switched out at the start of the third to get within one, but lost another takedown. A stalling

It was on to the third place match against fourth ranked Andrew Steffes of Kankakee Bishop McNamara.

Steffes scored first with a spinning takedown but Paul stood and reversed and they went to the second tied at two.

Paul escaped twice in the second but lost three takedowns and was down 8-4. He was let up to start the third and Paul took advantage with a neck wrench takedown to the back to take a two point lead.

Paul lost a reverse on a restart but quickly escaped to regain the lead and he held everything off for the last twenty seconds to win the bronze 11-10.

Clark opened against Curtis Green of Westmont with an 8-5 decision.

Green was called for two penalty points in the match.

Clark caught a leg and dumped for a takedown with thirty seconds left to take a 3-0 first period lead. He lost an escape at the start of the second, countered for a takedown and lost a reverse in the second.

On the bottom in the third, he worked over for a reverse midway through the period and gave up a reverse late but held on for the win.

Clark advanced to the quarterfinal to meet fifth ranked Wes Girardi of Deer Creek-Mackinaw where he lost a single leg takedown with 10 seconds left in the first and a counter to trail 4-1 after the second.

Clark lost a reverse and could not get loose from a tough ride by Girardi

and he dropped to consolation with a 7-1 loss. Girardi took sixth.

Chase met Seth Speaker of Mercer County in the second round of wrestlebacks. He countered for an early takedown but lost a quick reversal.

Clark stepped away and hit a high crotch with 30 seconds left and caught the arm for a ball and chain, added the half nelson and pinned with six seconds left.

Chase met Nate Critchfield of Mt. Carmel on Saturday morning. It took him a minute to work over for the first takedown. On top in the second, Clark hooked up the ball and chain and added a half nelson, holding it for 45 seconds to take a 5-0 lead into the third.

Clark rode tough through the third, giving up a late reverse to win 5-2.

In the semifinal, he met third ranked Jackson Beene of Seneca.

Beene got a quick takedown, but Clark escaped and got to the side for a takedown. Beene reversed with a second left to take a 4-3 lead.

Clark took the lead on a second period reverse and scored with a high crotch and went to the ball and chain half nelson combo to pin at 4:33.

Chase got a rematch with Green in the third place match and it was much different than the first meeting.

Clark worked behind after a high crotch shot and rode tough until he hooked up a half nelson for the turn and stepped over into a Saturday night to finish his high school career with pin at 1:53.

On the bottom in the second, Paul was caught in a cradle at the start and was pinned at 2:22 Gulley was defeated in the next round and did not place.

That sent Paul to the first round of consolation against Isaiah Tejada of DePaul Prep. Paul countered and grabbed a half nelson for a takedown and three backpoints.

He worked Tejada over the front from there and pinned in 33 seconds.

He was not so quick against ninth ranked Landon Flynn of Wilmington in the second round, but he still pinned.

Paul started with a four point throw and had a low single late in the period. He lost a takedown, but worked a throw from the bottom for a reverse to the back at the edge of the mat, getting the fall at 3:25.

In his quarterfinal, Paul spun sixth ranked Colin Nix of Auburn to his back in a butcher at the start and lost a reverse but reversed right back and added three more backpoints.

He got reversed and lost a couple of penalty points to cut his lead to 10-6 after two. They traded reverses in the third but Paul prevailed 12-9 to insure himself of a medal.

Paul lost by a major decision to third ranked Dallas Krueger of Rockridge the sectional semifinal. In this semifinal, Paul wrestled a different match.

Milliman faced tenth ranked Dillon Sarff of Dwight In the opening round.

Scoreless after one, Sarff rolled for an escape and worked off Milliman’s head for a takedown midway through the second.

Milliman flipped for an escape with 30 seconds left to trail 3-1 after two. He worked his way out the back for an escape with a minute left but could not score again.

The 3-2 loss sent Milliman to the wrestlebacks to face fifth ranked Cade Keeps of Mt. Carmel on Friday morning.

Milliman stepped it up against Keeps. He went from a high crotch to a double in the first, lost a reverse to start the second but escaped and worked into a cradle for five points.

Cade escaped from there and Milliman led 8-3 after two. They traded takedowns in the third but Milliman’s was in a half nelson, and he worked it into a cradle, and pinned at 5:51.

Milliman advanced to meet sectional champion Conner Elmer of Dakota. They were scoreless until the third when Milliman escaped.

He worked off Elmer’s head for a takedown seconds later and added a two point tilt in the waning seconds to take a 5-0 win.

Milliman faced Brian Christie of Bishop McNamara in the quarterfinal and scored a quick outside single in the first and a spinning takedown with a minute left in the second.

Milliman stood for a escape on the third period whistle and went right to a takedown in a butcher, switching to a half nelson and pinning at 4:33 to get into the medal mix.

In the semifinal against seventh ranked Giovany Armira of Chicago Hope, Milliman was scoreless through the first and reversed at the start of the second, but no backpoints.

He lost a penalty point late to cut the lead to one and Milliman went behind by one when Armira reversed him 30 seconds into the third period.

Milliman could not get loose until he rolled for a reversal with one second left to take an exciting a 4-3 win.

In the third place match against Shawn Minick of Althoff, Milliman went outside for a single in the first and reversed out the back late in the second to lead 4-0 but the score was tied when Milliman got reversed into a cradle midway through the third.

Minick let him up and Milliman came out on top countering a throw and he held on for the bronze 7-4.

Paul started against Owen Gulley of LeRoy in the opening round with a strong duck under takedown but got too far out front and lost a reverse, He reversed with ten seconds left in the period to lead 4-2.

Hawks hang on to beat Vikings in regional opener Oregon advances with 57-52 win over North Boone

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com For the third year in a row, it was North Boone and Oregon facing each other in the opening round of and IHSA regional. Make it three wins in a row for the Hawks, in a 57-52 win on Feb.18.

“It was a game of runs and we were able to make one at the end,” Oregon coach Quinn Virgil said.

Trailing 50-49 with a minute left, Oregon scored the next eight points to clinch the victory.

Trey Woolsey hit a pair of free throws to get the lead back, 51-50.

Woolsey was fouled on Oregon’s next possession and made the first of the one-and-one.

He missed the second, but Dalton Hermes snuck behind a defender to rebound the ball and put it back in for a 54-50 lead.

Meanwhile, NB missed six straight baskets and Ryer Finch and Woolsey added three more free throws to close the game out.

“We weren’t able to finish our run out,” NB coach Matt Yarc said. “We get to places where we need to be, but can’t close games out.”

The Vikings stunned Oregon by running off nine straight points on four quick possessions to take the 50-49 lead. The Hawks nearly gave the game away by forcing up shots instead of using ball movement.

“Down the stretch, our youth showed,” Virgil said. “We should have killed the clock. Fortunately,

The North Boone lead came after Woolsey was hit with a charging call and Josh Hoffman came down and hit a jumper for the Vikings.

The coach’s son, Korey Yarc, had

a good look at a 3 on the next possession, but it bounced in and out and NB would never recover.

Oregon also dug itself out of a jam earlier in the contest. Trailing 16-10 midway through the second quarter, Virgil called a timeout and went

from a 2-3 zone to a 1-3-1.

From that point forward, Oregon went on an 11-0 run the rest of the half, with Woolsey, Eli Rufer and Noah Campos scoring.

“That was the key stretch and it was based on our inconsistency,” Yarc said. “We worked on that 1-3-1 in practice, but didn’t stay focused on our game plan.”

It was Hermes hitting a pair of 3s and Ryker Finch controlling the paint for Oregon with his scoring and rebounding in the third quarter.

The Hawks took their biggest lead at 36-24, after Woolsey had a block and went coast-to-coast for an old-fashioned 3-point play.

“We knew Woolsey was the one to stop,” Yarc said.

Just when it looked like Oregon would begin to pull away like they did a week early in a 57-41 win over the same NB team, they lost the ball twice on mid court steals and easy lay-ups.

The quarter ended with the Vikings only trailing 36-33 after Ben Hooker’s fourth 3 of the game.

Baskets by Finch and Woolsey quickly restored order early in the fourth before NB went on its final run. Both had double-doubles with 19 points and 14 rebounds for Woolsey and 17 and 10 for Finch.

“That was Ryker’s best game of the season,” Virgil said.

After bad games with Dixon and South Beloit and also losing in the season finale to Stillman Valley, the win over North Boone (6-23) was much needed for Oregon (14-17).

“The last week was rough with make-up games,” Virgil said. “The South Beloit game was the low point of the season and Dixon just hammered us. Against Stillman Valley, we were within six points in the fourth quarter, but ran out of gas.”

Hawks’ basketball season comes to an end in 78-39 loss

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com Oregon’s basketball season came to an end with a 78-39 loss Byron at the North Boone 2A regional.

“We knew we would have to play flawless to have any chance,” Oregon coach Quinn Virgil said.

It was Byron’s 17th win in the last 18 games, its only loss to 3A Dixon.

Earlier this year, Byron also beat Oregon, 70-45.

Other than Trey Woolsey sinking a 3-pointer to start the game, this one was all Byron (24-6), as the Tigers

scored the next 15 points.

“I was real excited with how we started the game defensively,” Byron coach Tom Schmidt said.

Riley Birnbaum broke the 7-minute scoring drought for Oregon (1418) with a basket with 30 seconds left in the first quarter and the Hawks down 20-5.

“It got ugly,” Virgil said. “We panicked and took bad shots.”

Consecutive scores early in the second quarter by Josh Sitze and Dalton Hermes gave the Hawks a slight glimmer of hope. But, that was snuffed out by another scoring

drought of only one basket by Ryker Finch the rest of the way.

“Taking Woolsey out was the key,” Schmidt said. “He’s capable of going off for 30. After the first three of the game, he didn’t score again until the fourth quarter against the reserves.”

Tyler Camling and Zak Alberts were assigned to Woolsey and Schmidt was quite pleased with their defense on him.

Led by Anthony Eddy knocking down four 3-pointers, the Tigers took a 45-11 halftime lead. Nobody from Oregon had more than one basket.

The two teams traded points in a

10-10 third quarter, with Finch sparking his team on three straight baskets and two blocks. Birnbaum had a block and score.

Woolsey led the Hawks in scoring with 11 points, followed by Finch added 10 and Hermes 7.

Hermes and Jackson Buck wrapped up their Hawk basketball career and the remainder of the team returns.

s Oregon wrestling back?

With four state placers at Champaign this past weekend, it sure is looking like it. It is the most the Hawks have had since 2001, when Andy Ballard, Eric Berg, Jim Roschi and Tony Pedrosa all brought home medals.

In 1997, 98, 99, 00 and 04, Oregon claimed three state medalists in what was the golden era of Hawk wrestling under Mike Papini.

That was in a 2-class system with only four places being given out, compared to the current set-up of three classes and six places. But, it should be noted that 2019 medalists Andrew Herbst, Jacob Milliman, Noah Paul and Chase Clark were all in the top four of their weight class.

A big difference between then and now is getting it done with less personnel and athleticism.

Credit to coach Kip Crandall and the smattering of dedicated kids that have stuck with wrestling. It is definitely a tougher road to hoe than in the glory days when wrestling was king at the high school.

the state led the way with 7 state champs in 1A. That’s how it’s been for decades, though the central part of the state is making inroads with 6 champs.

How about Dakota crowning its 43rd individual state champ, tops in 1A? What a program with the energetic Pete Alber at the helm.

Boys Basketball Regionals With boys regional basketball going on this week, the area 1A brackets are tougher than 2A – just like the girls were.

Hall Township and Sterling Newman as No. 1 sub-sectional seeds don’t exactly strike fear into anyone. The other sub-sectional feeding into the DeKalb super-sectional is weak, as well, opening the door for a relative unknown to make state.

Newman’s record is 27-3, but nine of those wins have been by five points or less. The Comets win those close games more because of mental fortitude than abilities.

It’s surprising to see Winnebago as a No. 7 seed. Even though they are at .500, they only lost to Newman by a point and gave a full-strength Rock Falls (ranked in 3A) quite a battle last week.

The last time ‘Bago finished with a losing record was 2001, with five state trophies in that time span.

Look for the Indians get back towards the top next year with plenty of young returners. In the BNC, Dixon and Rock Falls will lose the most with next year’s conference race wide open.

Rockford Christian and Lutheran have been down this year and who knows what next year will bring.

That’s the nature of private schools.

What has happened to Mendota?

Once known as a basketball school, it’s sunk to its worst record ever at 3-23, likely the result of changing demographics in the town.

With the BNC ripe for the picking,

can Oregon and its promising junior class rise to the upper echelon of the league? It will be one of the intriguing storylines for next year.

As far as this year goes, how about a small round of applause to seniors Dalton Hermes and Jackson Buck for sticking it out all four years as basically the only basketball players in their class.

After 23 years of covering ball games, it was bound to happen – going to the wrong town for an event. That’s what happened Saturday when I showed up at Polo for the basketball game that was being played at Dakota.

It was a case of not paying attention and thankfully, Tommy Bardell and John Gavin were doing the broadcast on WLLT, so not all was lost for me.

It sounded like I missed quite a performance by Braiden Soltow and Brady Webb. Likewise with Braeden Fyock knocking down 27 against Winnebago in a 42040 Cardinal win on Saturday. ​

Illinois state trooper is injured in crash on I-39

A state trooper was injured when his squad car was struck by a motorist along I-39. Photo supplied At this time, the semi struck the commercial motor vehicle traveling in the left lane, before taking evasive action, and veering back into the right lane.

When the semi veered back into the right lane, the trailer swerved onto the right shoulder and side-swiped the driver side of the trooper’s squad car, causing extensive damage.

The driver side of the passenger vehicle the trooper had pulled over was also side swiped.

A fifth vehicle sustained damage from debris in the roadway caused by the crash, but was not directly involved.

The trooper suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a local area hospital for treatment and has since been released. No other injuries were reported.

Toure was issued citations for violation of Scott’s Law and improper lane usage.

When approaching an emergency vehicle, or any vehicle with their hazard lights activated, drivers are required to slow down and move over and change lanes if possible.

A District 1 Illinois State Trooper was injured Monday evening when his squad car was sideswiped by a semi tractor-trailer during a routine traffic stop in Interstate 39 between Ill. 64 and 72.

The crash occurred at approximately 6:43 p.m. and affected three vehicles besides the squad car and semi.

Illinois State Police said the trooper, who they did not identify, was inside his squad car conducting a traffic stop on the right shoulder of I-39 northbound at milepost 108 in Ogle County, with his emergency lights activated.

While he was stationary on the right shoulder, his squad car was sideswiped by the semi, driven

by Adam Toure, 58, of Chicago.

According to a press release, preliminary reports indicate the semi was traveling in the right lane and attempted to move into the left lane, which was occupied by another commercial motor vehicle.

Deputies along with the Rochelle Police Department, Illinois State Police, Rochelle Fire and EMS, and Creston Fire and EMS responded at 4:20 p.m. to the area of Ill. 38 and Mulford Road for a two-vehicle headon collision.

An eastbound car driven by Ariadna Calderon, 18, Rochelle, went out of control and entered into oncoming traffic, colliding with a vehicle occupied by Ignacio Constellanos, 34, Rosa Contreras-Garcia, 37, and Tania Contreras-Garcia, 30, all of Rochelle.

All four were transported to Rochelle Community Hospital by Rochelle EMS to be evaluated for injuries.

OBITUARIES ZONDRA F. BALEY Zondra Faye (Klaas) Baley, 83, of Polo, died on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019 at Pinecrest Terrace, Mt. Morris, with her family at her side.

She was born on March 28, 1935 to Elmer and Aleatha (Diestelmeier) Klaas in Freeport.

Zondra married James Baley on Oct. 4, 1952.

She worked for a brief time at Lena State Bank. Her main role in life was being a homemaker and doing for others.

She was very active in her church, Polo Women’s Club, Polo Garden Club, and Card Club.

DIANE J. LOHMAN Diane J. Lohman, 73, of Freeport, was taken home to be with the Lord on Monday, Feb. 11, 2019.

Diane was born on Oct. 5, 1945 in Freeport, the daughter of John E. and Stella (Janssen) Ruter, of Baileyville.

She attended school in Forreston and graduated as salutatorian of the Forreston High School Class of 1963.

After graduation, she went to work for Micro Switch in Freeport, where she worked in the personnel department.

Diane married Jim Lohman on June 18, 1966 at the Baileyville Reformed Church, where they met. Their wedding was officiated by James’ father, Rev. Donald Lohman.

WALLACE KILKER Wallace “Wally” Kilker, 88, of Forreston, died on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2019 at Pearl Pavilion, Freeport.

He was born on Jan. 13, 1931 in Freeport, the son of Ervin and Dorothy (Hartje) Kilker.

Wally married Wilma Saxby on June 22, 1951. She died on Sept. 16, 2001.

Wally worked for Groenewold Fur & Wool and was an auctioneer for Mack Auction.

He was a member of North Grove Evangelical Church and the Forreston

Her hobbies included sewing, gardening, baking, and entertaining grandkids.

She enjoyed corresponding with her family and many close friends.

Zondra is survived by her two daughters, Jan (Larry) Mainz, Mission, Texas, and Linda (Gregory) Smith, Polo; grandchildren, Jenny (Steve Stadel) Smith, Michael (Vikkie) Smith, Carolyn (Joseph) Kelly, Jamie Smith, Joseph Smith, Emily (Tony) Hardin, Mark Smith, and Paul Smith; step-grandchildren, Holly (John) Andrews and Jody

(Andy) Heideman; great-grandchildren, Dalton, Matthew, Kristin, Rabecca, Lillian, Olivia, Lucas, Adriana, Bryn, Levi, and Jess; step-great-grandchildren, Drew, Cameron and Kate; sisters, Helaine (Clyde) Price, of Texas, and Faith Brookman, of Lena.

Zondra was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Diane (Jess) McIlvainie and Mona (Merlan) Fernstaedt; and brotherin-law, Rodney Brookman.

A memorial service will be held on

Friday, Feb. 22 at 10:30 a.m. at Salem United Church of Christ, 8491 W. Salem Rd., Lena. A luncheon will be provided immediately following at the church.

Arrangements were completed by Polo Family Funeral Home, 110 E. Dixon St., Polo.

Diane was a loving wife, mother,grandmother, and sister and enjoyed spending time with her family.

She enjoyed various sewing projects including clothes for herself and family.

She enjoyed traveling to new places and seeing new sights.

She had a love for horses as a child and raised a pony for the last several years.

She had recently started following in the footsteps of her sister as an avid Cubs fan.

Surviving are her husband, Jim; her son, Jon (Katie) Lohman, of San Jose, California; daughter, Katrina Smith, of Freeport; grandson, Micah Lohman; and granddaughters Evelyn Lohman, Denise

Lohman, Savannah Smith, and Alexis Smith.

She is also survived by her brother, Donald Ruter, of Freeport; two brothersin-law, Mark (Myrna) Lohman, and Phil (Kathy) Lohman; and a sister-in-law, Wanetta (Aldo) Crose; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her in-laws, Donald and Gladys Lohman; her sister, Alma Schultz; and sister-in-law, Carolyn Ruter; along with three nieces and two nephews.

Funeral services were held on Feb. 16 at Park Hills Church, Freeport, with Rev. Larry Elliot officiating.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund for Christian Missions trips has been established. Arrangements were completed

by Burke Tubbs Funeral Home, Freeport.

urday, Feb. 23 at 10 a.m. at North Grove Evangelical Church, 10384 W. Coffman Rd., Forreston, with Rev. Timothy Hotchkiss officiating.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Feb. 22 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home, Forreston.

Burial will be in North Grove Evangelical Cemetery.

• Estimates indicate that there were roughly 2.1 million full-time workers employed in production agriculture in 2017 and between 1.4 and 2.1 million hired crop workers employed annually on crop farms in the United States.

• An estimated 893,000 young people

under 20 years of age resided on farms in 2014. More than half of those young people performed farm work, and an additional 266,000 youth were hired to work on farms in 2014.

• Each day, roughly 100 agricultural workers suffer injuries that cause them to miss time at work.

• In 2014, 12,000 youth were injured on farms, and 4,000 of those youths could trace their injuries to farm work.

• In 2016, 417 farmers and farm workers died from work-related injuries. Tractor overturns and other transportation incidents were the leading cause of death for these farmers and farm workers.

• A rollover protection system, or ROPS, is a structure, similar to rollcages and rollbars in cars and trucks, intended to protect farm equipment operators from injuries caused by overturns or rollovers. NIOSH notes that an ROPS is the most effective way to prevent overturn deaths. Despite that, in 2014, only 62 percent of tractors used on farms in the U.S. were equipped with an ROPS.

Though it’s easy to look at the tech industry and think this increasingly influential sector is what makes the world go round, something closer to the very core of the Earth may be what’s driving your economy.

Eventually, farming can pave the way for development, including roads, markets, shipping services, exporting, and many other sectors.

Agriculture is an important economic building block. An especially important sector, the agricultural industry, when supported, can contribute greatly to sustained economic growth.

hat are the chances of a local farmer’s tractor ending up in a Chicago museum?

You might say it’s something of a long shot.

But the odds must have been in Richard Schmitt’s favor about a year ago because an appearance at a local tractor show turned one of his collectible tractors into a museum showpiece.

Schmitt, 84, of Sterling has farmed all his life near Sterling, and has been collecting tractors for decades and displaying them at area shows.

“About a year ago, I had a tractor over at a tractor show at Long Shot (Bar and Grill in Rock Falls). I have a name on my tractors. They asked somebody who it was, and got my number,” Schmitt said.

“They” turned out to be representatives with the Chicago History Museum, who were interested in displaying Schmitt’s 1934 Farmall B International, a request he was only too happy to oblige – and not just because he wanted to show off his pride and joy.

“I’ve got about 55 of ‘em … and the reason I loaned it to her (Angela Mahoney, a curator at the museum) is so that it’d make me room for another tractor,” he told WTTW Chicago during an interview in October, when he visit-

ed the museum.

The tractor, which he bought in 1970, is part of the museum’s “Modern by Design: Chicago Streamlines America” exhibit, which features examples of Chicago-made items that helped shape the modern, streamlined style that emerged during the early 1930s.

Some of The Windy City’s streamlined products – from Radio Flyer wagons to Sunbeam appliances to Farmall tractors – became national best-sellers and remain icons of modern American design.

Tractors have been part of Schmitt’s life for as long as he can remember.

A third-generation farmer, his grandfather gave him a rubber tractor and plow when he was 3. He purchased his farm on Fulfs Road in 1959 with his first wife, Alice, and 4 years later he bought his first collectible tractor, a 1934 Farmall F-20.

“That tractor was made June 5, 1934, the day I was born,” Schmitt said.

After his first tractor came to the end of its useful life, Schmitt restored it and started showing it at tractor shows and parades.

From there, his passion for power just kept picking up speed, albeit not much speed.

“This tractor (the Farmall B) only has like 15, 18 horsepower. A lawnmower has got that now,” he told WTTW.

It was during his time working for the family business, Schmitt Plumbing in Dixon, when he started buying and collecting tractors.

“I was a plumber, and did a lot of pump work for farms,” Schmitt said.

Schmitt said he likes how the museum’s displaying the Farmall-B. “It’s enclosed in glass all around,” he said.

He continues to take part in tractor shows. Richard’s favorite piece in his collection is a 1966 G1000 Minneapolis Moline tractor his father purchased new.

“He still loves to go on rides and has tractor shows at the house,” his second wife, Roxanne, 73, said – proof positive
