Park district gets $400,000 state grant for improvements at Park West

District was one of 89 projects approved by Pritzer

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com The Oregon Park District has been awarded a $400,000 state grant that will assist with completing Phase II improvements at Park West.

Governor JB Pritzer announced Feb. 5 that a total of $28.9 million in grants for 89 local projects had been awarded through the state’s Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) program, administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

The grant means the Oregon Park District will move forward with improvements that have been in the works for almost two years.

“The district is very excited about the grant award and look forward to the benefits provided through the planned improvements,” said executive director Erin Folk. “Throughout the planning process the community has requested we take care of existing infrastructure and we will be able to do so with the assistance of the IDNR grant award.”

Park district officials began seeking community input for Park West in 2017.

Following several public meetings and an online survey, the district incorporated feedback from residents to help create a master plan for the park.

Features planned for Park West include ADA improvements, improved lighting, replacement of the existing shelter with a larger shelter and updated restrooms, replacement of the existing playground with a fully inclusive playground and replacement of the sand volleyball courts and addition of an outdoor classroom, batting cage, and YALP Sport Court.

The Dixon Public Library now is a federal depository, providing free access to government information and publications to anyone.

U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth added the library at 221 S. Hennepin Ave. to the list of 52 facilities in Illinois that are part of the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Depository Library Program.

Dixon’s is the only library in the Sauk Valley so designated, but you don’t need to be a member to access the federal documents, either digitally or in print.

Available are a catalog of all federal publications, the U.S. budget, the Congressional Record, a compilation of presidential documents, economic indicators, the text and an interpretation of the Constitution, a list of federal statutes, and so on.

“The board and staff of Dixon Public Library are excited to be part of the Federal Depository Library Program, as it allows us to share valuable resources with our patrons,” library Director Antony Deter said.

“We are proud to be one of the public libraries in the state of Illinois, and across the nation, offering unrestricted access to government documents in support of the public’s right to be informed.”

About 1,150 libraries across the nation are part of the program.

Historic Polo home goes on the national register Rochelle’s downtown also named to list

BY KATHLEEN SCHULTZ kschultz@saukvalley.com The home of Polo’s first doctor was one of 30 Illinois sites to be added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2018, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources announced last week.

The Dr. William Wallace Burns House, built in 1854 at 201 N. Franklin Ave., is the first brick home built in the village.

It is currently the headquarters of the Blackhawk Waterways Area Covention & Visitors Bureau which serves Ogle, Carroll, Lee, and Whiteside Counties.

Burns lived in Polo between 1854 and 1868, and conducted his practice out of his modest two-story house.

As an allopathic physician, he was trained to treat a wide variety of illnesses, and he also served as a surgeon during the Civil War. He returned to Polo after the war and his practice flourished. He later built a more ostentatious house that since has been demolished.

Burns also worked to make the town flourish, Polo Historical Society curator Betty Obendorf said in a recent column published in the Tri-County Press.

“He pushed for better schools and stood out in public life. He became a mayor, president of the town council, and a member of the Polo School Board,” Obendorf wrote. “Under his leadership, he built the finest and most expensive school on Congress Street. This gave Polo prominence and state recognition.”

Because of his leadership, the society bought Burns House in 1986; it was listed on the National Register on Aug. 27. It now houses the Blackhawk Waterways tourism agency.

The home is one nine sites in Polo to be listed on the national register, and one of two sites in Ogle County to earn the distinction in 2018: Rochelle’s Downtown Historic District was listed on Dec. 31.

Other Polo sites include the Zenas Aplington House, Bryant H. and Lucie Barber House, Henry D. Barber House, Buffalo Grove Lime Kiln, Buffalo Township Public Library, John McGrath House, Polo Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge, and the David and Julia Watson House.

It includes commercial buildings, the City and Town Hall, the former Rochelle Fire Department; the town’s historic United States Post Office and the Masonic Temple.

“Dominant styles include the Italianate and Vernacular Commercial, but there are examples of the Queen Anne, Arts and Crafts, Romanesque Revival, Italian Renaissance Revival, Classical Revival, Art Deco, Mid-Century Modern, and Colonial Revival, the release said.

It’s “a noteworthy example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture, identified by its rounded arches at the entrances and windows, hipped roof with side gables, and square towers,” the release said.

“The church is also significant for its construction with concrete blocks that resembled stone.”

The church was dedicated in 1906; its clock tower was completed in 1911.

Places are added to the register by the National Park Service based on recommendations from the State Historic Preservation Office, a division of the IDNR. In general, properties must be older than 50 to be eligible.

Being on the list places no obligations on private property owners, but does make properties eligible for financial incentives.

25 students make allstate band & choir The music students in the Oregon School District took part in the district and state festivals this past winter.

Oregon High School and David L. Rahn Jr. High had 25 students who made the all-district band and choir through the Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA).

Those students represented District 8 at its festival and concert at DeKalb High School in November.

Of those students, Oregon High School was represented by three at the ILMEA All-State Festival in Peoria, Jan. 24-26.

The IDNR funds are matched one-to-one with local funds, creating jobs, and enriching the quality of life for communities across the state.

“The park district is currently on schedule to complete a master plan for each park site over the next 10 years with planned improvements at each park,” Folk said.

Lydia Cermak played horn in the All-State Band, Tessa Burger sang in the All-State Choir, and Brigham Finch participated in the Future Music Educator’s Seminar.

OHS senior, Tessa Burger, was at her second year at the all-state festival.

“It’s great making music with people you know; but connecting with complete strangers and forming such a strong bond in three days through music is an indescribable feeling,” Burger said. “Only an experience like all-state can make that possible.”

OHS first-year choir director, Zach Hall was proud of his students.

“I was very proud of our students for both the level of professionalism

that they showed at the festival and for the quality with which they performed. They represented OHS very well,” Hall said.

Aside from the ILMEA festivals, OHS was also represented by students at the Big Northern Conference music festival and the Augustana College Honor Band festival on Martin Luther King Jr. weekend.

All of these festivals are annual events for the Oregon music program, making for a very busy winter.

The district can expect to receive implementation instructions and program compliance responsibilities within the next 30 days, she said.

Design and construction documents are currently being completed with a bid and construction timeline expected in the coming months.

“Construction will not begin until we receive notice of the state award and a grant agreement has been fully executed,” Folk said. “A significant change that has occurred

with the OSLAD program since the last grant was received is receipt of funding. Following execution of the grant agreement, the District will receive an advance payment of $200,000. Payment of the remaining $200,000 will occur following completion.”

Pritzker said the grants will help communities acquire open space and develop and improve recreational facilities throughout Illinois.

“Investments in Illinois’ local parks makes it easier for fami-

lies and recreation enthusiasts to enjoy our state’s beauty and help their communities thrive,” he said.

“Parks projects will also create jobs, providing a boost to local economic development efforts in dozens of communities and spurring additional investment.”

The OSLAD program began in 1987 and has invested $419.4 million in 1,765 local park projects.

The program receives dedicated funding from a percentage of the state’s real estate transfer tax.

War turned lonely Dixon’s Ferry into Fort Dixon Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK News of the Blackhawk War in the eastern papers attracted settlers from the northeastern states who migrated to northern Illinois along the Erie Canal after the war.

Following the end of this war was the birth of Chicago in 1836, the same year Oregon was founded.

Settlers arrived in Ogle County two years after the war ended with the Battle of Bad Axe on Aug. 2, 1832.

Fort Dixon played an important role in the Blackhawk War. Two years after the battle of Bad Axe, John Phelps claimed a site for his cabin and another site for the future Oregon City.

In 1828 a French and Indian man named Joseph Ogee built a cabin on the present site of Dixon and established Ogee’s Ferry.

In the spring of 1830 John Dixon, after whom the city takes its name, purchased Ogee’s claim and interest in the ferry.

Dixon settled with his family at Ogee’s Ferry on April 11, 1830.

Today’s Dixon was incorporated Feb. 10, 1853.

Before the Black Hawk War in 1832, Dixon’s Ferry was a quiet and, at times, lonely outpost.

The return of Black Hawk from Iowa turned Dixon’s Ferry into a major military encampment.

Dixon became the central command post during the early stages of the Black Hawk War.

It was centrally located between Fort Dearborn (Chicago), Fort Armstrong (Rock Island) and Fort Clark (Peoria).

General Henry Atkinson established his command post at Fort Dixon on May 22, 1832.

Fort Dixon was built by Zachary Taylor and his army for the pur-

pose of protecting Dixon and Dixon’s Ferry.

Bob Gibler wrote that the buildings were constructed of logs, one being two stories high and approximately four times larger than the other and also provided gun ports in which to defend the north and east directions.

An embankment about four feet high of earthen soil surrounded the two buildings with an opening to the fort facing the river’s edge.

Soldiers and horses were camped along the river for some distance in each direction.

Reports show that there were close to 3,000 men bivouacked at Fort Dixon in the early stages of the war.

Dixon’s Ferry was used to transport troops and supplies across the river.

The fort was located on the north bank of the Rock River at Dixon’s Ferry.

At the end of the war it was abandoned. The fort structure remained standing for several years.

During the 1990s there was a movement to build a replica Fort Dixon.

Several notable people were stationed at or near this fort during the Black Hawk War including Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Winfield Scott, and Zachary Taylor.

Abraham Lincoln served two and one-half months in the Army with a total of 18 days in or near Fort Dixon.

Zachary Taylor led the First Infantry Regiment in the Black Hawk War. He became our nation’s 12th President.

Winfield Scott was appointed Commanding General of the Army in 1841.

Robert Anderson became a major and commanded the Union garrison at Fort Sumter.

Jefferson Davis, after the Black Hawk War, became the only president of the Confederate States of America.

It’s kind of amazing while living most of my life in Oregon that I never heard of Fort Dixon.

Lorado Taft Campus Programs Lorado Taft Campus and the Oregon Public Library have joined forces to offer three winter programs starting in January.

Bank donates to Village of Progress

Stillman Bank recently ended its Purchase with a Purpose Debit Card campaign in which a $1 donation was made to local charities with every Stillman Bank debit card transaction up to $20,000.

Village of Progress, Oregon, was one 10 non-profit organizations throughout the Rock River Valley to receive a $2,000 check from the program.

The Village has been serving adults with developmental disabilities in Ogle County since 1969.

The organization offers vocational skills, recreational programs, and social activities to each of the consumers who attends there.

The people the Village serves are given a place of mutual respect, a place where they have a voice, and an opportunity to create purpose in their lives.

Phidian seeks submissions for 72nd art show The Phidian Art Club will sponsor its 72nd annual Phidian Art Show on Tuesday, April 9 at the Loveland Community House, 513 W. Second St., Dixon. The show and reception are open to the public, and no admission fee will be charged. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Peoples’ Choice Award voting is from 6 to

The Phidian Art Club was founded in 1890 to promote visual art, literature, and music. The first Phidian Art Show was held in 1947. Last year more than 70 artists submitted entries to the show. Artwork is critiqued by judges

of unique backgrounds and qualifications, most of whom are artists themselves, and many with national reputations.

Phidian will be awarding more than $3,500 in prizes donated by local business and individuals; many are memorial awards in remembrance of special people. Artwork submitted must be an original painting or drawing that

Herbst, Paul, Clark, and Milliman to wrestle at Champaign

Twelve ranking from three to ten were defeated in the early rounds.

The 106 pound class had the top three and 220 featured numbers two, three, and five, while heavyweight had two, three, and four.

Five number ones and seven number twos dotted the lineup. Forty seven ranked wrestlers advanced and there were upsets scattered throughout the brackets.

Aurora Christian led all teams with eight state qualifiers including three champions and a second place.

Dakota and Lena-Winslow-Stockton will each send five, the Indians

sending all five to the championship mat and taking three titles. The Pantherhawks were kept off the top of the podium, taking one second place, a third, and three fourths.

Joining Oregon with four qualifiers was Orion with a first, a second, and two fourth place medalists.

Herbst, Milliman, and Paul had first round byes. Sewell was first on the mat for the Hawks and he started strong. He fought off a throw and tilted for three points in the first and hit an outside single to start the second, working into a cradle to pin at 2:19.

Next up was Clark. He caught a

leg and dumped for the first takedown. On the bottom in the second he picked up a penalty point and completed a switch with five seconds left in the period. Neutral in the third, he stepped behind for a takedown to take a 7-0 win.

In his opener, Crandall led 2-1 after the first period, but roll came up short in the second and he was reversed to his back to trail 5-2 going into the third. He picked up a penalty point at the start of the third, stood for an escape, and caught a throw by for a takedown to the back

Led by second place finisher Chase Clark, the Oregon Hawks will have multiple entries in the IHSA State Individual Championships this week for the first time since 2015, when Oregon sent two.

The last time there were four was in 2008 and there were five in 2004 and six in 2003. The record is seven in 2002 when the Hawks took second in the Dual Team Tournament.

Chase Clark rode tough in the second and third periods of the 152 pound semifinal at the Byron Sectional to become the first qualifier for Oregon.

The Oregon senior did not even make it out of the regional last year and now he is headed to the State Farm Center.

The rest of the semifinals were rough on the Hawks. In a duplicate of last year, 106 pounder Andrew Herbst lost to Joel Mylin of Aurora Christian 3-1 in the semifinal but, different than last season, Herbst pinned twice in the wrestlebacks to take third.

At 113, Jacob Milliman lost 8-4 in the semifinals and also pinned his way to third place to earn his second trip to Champaign.

An alternate for the past three years, senior Noah Paul lost a major decision in the round of four and scored a pin and a major decision to take third place and make it to the Finals for the first time.

In a loaded 145 pound bracket, Jokiah Sewell pinned in his opener but lost in the quarterfinals.

On the other side of the bracket, he advanced to the quarterfinals with a pin but was stopped in a hard fought 7-6 loss.

At 182 pounds, Zachary Crandall won his first match 9-6 but went down to a technical fall in the next round and dropped a 7-6 decision in the first round of consolation to end his tournament.

Byron might have been the toughest sectional in the state.

The quarterfinals started with Herbst going out the back for a takedown. He lost a reverse but reversed right back and went to the cradle for a pin at 1:55. Milliman caught a quick heel pick and worked into a tilt to pin at 1:44.

Paul countered a throw and scored a takedown to the back in a Saturday night to pin in 24 seconds.

Sewell fed into seventh ranked Bryce Faworski of Winnebago in the quarterfinal. Sewell was down just 4-2 after the first period but was caught in a heel pick at the start of the second and went to his back and was pinned at 2:17. Faworski went on to take third place.

Clark scored a duck under takedown on Jakob Ebner of Princeton in the first period and lost a counter to start the second. He stepped over for a reverse later in the period. He drew a stalling point and escaped in the third to take a 6-2 win.

In the his quarterfinal against the eventual third place finisher, fourth ranked Justin Peake of Johnsburg, Crandall never got on track, giving up three sets of backpoints and four takedowns in an 18-2 technical fall loss at 4:13 to complete the Friday night action for the Hawks.

The first Oregon wrestler on the mat Saturday morning, Sewell faced tenth ranked Ryan Wegerer of Orion in the first round of wrestlebacks.

Sewell went for a heel pick and was countered to his back in a cradle. He looked to be in real trouble but he rolled out of it and reversed Wegerer to his back in a stack and pinned him at 1:17.

Next up was Crandall against Dorian Barlow of Amboy. Crandall was up 4-2 when Barlow rolled through and caught him for a reverse and three backpoints to take a two point lead. Crandall picked up a stalling point in the third but was unable to get free and his season ended in a hard fought 7-6 loss.

The semifinals started with the 106 pound matchup of number one and two. Mylin caught an outside single at the start of the match and that was all the points he would need. Herbst escaped with thirty seconds left in the period. Mylin rode out the second. and Herbst slipped off to lose an escape midway through the third to drop Herbst to the consolation semifinal. Mylin took the title with a 5-1 win over Maddux Blakely of Dakota.

Milliman got off to a bad start against honorable mention Matthew Harris of Princeton in his semifinal. His shot was countered and he went to his back losing two points.

He reversed to the back from there and the score was tied at four after the first. Harris caught Milliman in a headlock for a throw and two backpoints in the second. Milliman could not escape in the third and he went to the wrestlebacks with the four point loss. Harris was pinned

by Dakota’s Conner Elmer in the

championship match.

In his semifinal against third ranked Dallas Krueger of Rockridge, Paul lost a spinning takedown, in the first, a strong double leg takedown and a two point cradle in the second. Paul just missed a reverse from a double chicken wing late in the period and Krueger hit a rolling reverse in the third to take an 8-0 major decision.

Clark broke the string of losses with a 4-2 win over eventual fourth place medalist Reilly Dowd of Rock Falls. He turned the corner for the first takedown with 17 seconds left in the first period but lost a reverse at the buzzer.

He switched for a reverse early in the second and rode tough the rest of the way, stopping three stand ups, driving Dowd back to the mat, the last with ten seconds left to ice the match.

On the mat at the same time as Clark, Sewell was in a quarterfinal wrestleback against Izaiah James of Rock Falls and was up 5-0 when James escaped and caught him in a double leg takedown at the second period buzzer.

In the third, Sewell lost a reverse with a minute left and then escaped to regain the lead but he lost a counter with eleven seconds left in the match to send the Oregon freshman home with the one point loss. James was defeated in the semifinal.

Herbst left little doubt in his semifinal wrestleback. He had a chicken wing over the front, an arm bar, and a turk in the first period to take a 9-0

lead. In the second, he switched into a cradle and pulled it back for a pin at 3:31.

Milliman advanced to the medal round with a second period pin. He swam with a half nelson for a 5-0 first period lead and shook his way out the back for a reverse to start the second. He worked that into a half nelson and pinned at 3:07 Paul went right after Hayden Faworski of Winnebago in the consolation semifinal. He hooked up the cradle twice for three points before he went from a guillotine to a Saturday night at 1:55.

It looked like the average match for the season for Herbst in the third place match. He caught tenth ranked Zach White of Lena with a heel pick, snagged a cradle and pinned him in 20 seconds.

Milliman was scoreless after the first period of his third place match against eighth ranked Briar Nevills of West Carroll.

He reversed in the second and took a half nelson over the front for two points at the buzzer and had a half nelson for three more points at the start of the third before turned with a granby and switched to a half nelson at 5:05.

In the third place match against seventh ranked Noah Schnerre of Orion, Paul snapped for the first takedown and a 2-1 first period lead.

In the second, he reversed from an arm bar, kept the arm and posted it for three points. He added five more points on a hip toss in the third and gave up a late reversal to win 12-2.

BOWLING REGIONAL

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com The Oregon girls bowling team lost out in its bid to advance to the IHSA state meet. At the Rockford sectional, the Hawks finished eighth out of 12 teams with the top four moving on.

“It was a little disappointing not getting one girl out,” Oregon coach Eric Carlson said. “The girls fought hard all day, but had struggles on the lanes.”

Leading the way for Oregon were Rebbeca and Sammantha Meyers.

Rebbecca had a 1,082 series, with a high game of 235 for 33rd place. Sam-

mantha was close behind in 36rd with a 1,064. Her top game was 203.

A score of 1,266 was needed to qualify as an at-large individual.

Other scorers in the 102-person field were 57th place Hannah Kaltenbrun with a 972, 62nd place Alysa Conley 946 and 66th place Elizabeth Villarreal 926.

Harlem (6,320), which won the sectional for the third straight year had the individual champ in Rebecca Hagerman at 1,362. Sycamore, which won the regional last week, was a distant second at 5,901.

Other team qualifiers were South Elgin (5,574) and Freeport (5,477).

There was a big separation from the four qualifiers and everyone else, with fifth place 261 pins behind.

Oregon had its chances, especially after starting off with a 964, which left them in fifth place to start the day at Don Carter Lanes.

Carlson was not happy with the start time of 1:45 pm either. Most teams are accustomed to 9:00 am starts.

“It’s not the same energy in the afternoon and the girls were exhausted by games five and six,” Carlson said.

the Rockford sectional went to the mid-series break.

“The only time this happens is when Don Carter hosts,” Carlson said. “I’m sending the IHSA an email stating that the guidelines need to changed to a 9:00 am start time.”

Of the teams that did not qualify, it was close between sixth place Dundee Crown (5,094) and 10th place Belvidere (4,907). Oregon could have just as well been in sixth, as they led Dundee by 134 pins after the morning session.

“Considering we only had six girls, this has been a pretty good season,” Carlson said.

Five of Oregon High School’s Fall 2018 athletic teams qualified for the Illinois High School Association’s (IHSA) Team Academic Achievement Award.

The four teams were: Girls Cross Country; Boys Cross Country; Girls Golf; Boys Soccer; and Girls Volleyball.

The IHSA Team Academic Achievement Award is designed to reward teamwork not only in com-

petition, but in the classroom as well.

The award recognizes those teams that maintain a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher throughout their respective season.

“Oregon High School is proud of these student athletes, and their teachers, coaches, and families who support them,” said Mike Lawton, Oregon High School Activities Director, in a press release.

SPORTS ROUNDUP Oregon 79, Rochelle 66: Trey Woolsey led the Hawks with 30 points and hit seven treys in a Feb. 6 matchup at the Blackhawk Center.

Oregon led 44-36 at the half and hit 14 treys in the game.

Girls basketball and wrestling take centerstage B

efore taking off for a 4-day running vacation in the warmer climes of the dessert Southwest, it was a menu of girls basketball and wrestling for me.

The Forreston girls team ran into a buzz saw by the name of Tabytha Toelke of Dakota in the regional finals.

This after the Cardinals put the clamps down on another NUIC star in Jaynee Prestegaard of AFC. The difference between the two games was that Dakota had more weapons to rely on than AFC. But, it was the sophomore Toelke who established herself as the rising star in the conference loaded with young talent.

That’s the problem for teams like Forreston and Polo. Sure, they both return the majority of their players, but so does nearly everyone else in the NUIC. As coach Brian Rahn mentioned, its more than bringing back returners. You’re going to need to improve substantially to keep pace with the rest of the league powers.

to defeat AFC, a team with 10 more wins than Forreston. Additionally, the Cardinal players dazzled on defense.

Reminiscent of the football team beating Le-Win in the semis, it was a blending of coaches and players performing at a high level to defeat a higher-seeded foe.

Kudos to Rahn’s coaching expertise to his girls giving it their all.

While we’re on the topic of Dakota, I found it interesting that even though they lost to Le-Win at the wrestling regional, they managed to win all five of their semifinal matches at the sectional, while Le-Win lost five of six.

Dakota has had a long tradition of installing winning into their kids.

It’s a part of the culture of a school’s athletic program.

Some schools have it and some don’t. When your school hasn’t been successful for a while, it is hard to manufacture.

There is strategy employed in wrestling, as evidenced by Chase Clark of Oregon moving up a weight class to improve his odds of advancing downstate.

It worked, as he avoided a logjam of four top-flight 145-pound opponents. That’s not being afraid, but being smart.

Plus, you always want to see a senior make it downstate in their final year.

Joining him will be another firsttime senior qualifier in Noah Paul.

Along with Andrew Herbst and Jacob Milliman, it’s the largest state contingent in several years for the Hawks.

Wrestling has taken a page from fashion and now allows individuals to wear two-piece uniforms instead of singlets. Stillman Valley has made the change and a coach told me the kids prefer this over the tight-fitting

singlets, especially the bigger kids.

It was neat to see a familiar face managing the scoring for the wrestling sectional.

Emily Joines, a teacher at Polo, starting running the scoring at last year’s sectional.

The program used by the IHSA is “Track Wrestling” and Mark Scholl of Polo taught Joines how to use it.

Occasionally, I will write something that strikes a chord with people. A recent column on how I felt Byron’s football program was unfairly treated by the news media, more specifically the Rockford Register Star was one such piece.

To their credit, the Register Star allowed my column to be run on their editorial page.

Since then, I have been bombarded with favorable comments from people of all walks of life and various towns, not just those from Byron.

It’s rewarding when someone tells you how much it is appreciated taking a stand on his or her behalf.

computer cables, video game hardware, satellite receivers, digital clocks and radios, stereo equipment, phone systems, calculators, holiday light strands, printer ink cartridges, CFL bulbs, rechargeable batteries, shredders (no plastic tubs), and microwave ovens ($5 per microwave oven).

A limit is set of seven large items, such as TVs, monitors, computers, and microwaves, per vehicle per month.

Items that are not accepted include white goods (appliances), coffee makers, fryers and grills, blenders, bread makers, light fixtures, fans, dehumidifiers, air conditioners, heaters, personal hygiene products

(razors, hairdryers), power and yard tools, exercise equipment, smoke detectors, wooden stereo speakers, large copy machines, business electronics, scrapped or de-manufactured electronics, or Styrofoam and other packaging materials from electronic goods.

Because this program is for Ogle County only, residents of other counties should contact their county or municipal government office to inquire about local recycling options.

Boys have the opportunity to play theme related games and earn money to spend at the gift shop, and the girls get to make commemorative bracelets each year.

Each night is special and provides a wonderful opportunity for quality time with children creating memories and fun for a lifetime.

Thank you to Merlin’s Greenhouse and Flowers and Dunkin Donuts, who contributed to the event as well as the Blackhawk Crossing 4-H Club.

Many couples went out for a special dinner before the dance, and many of the girls had beautiful corsages from the local florists.
