Man arrested for hijacking a vehicle Five other charges are levied after incident in Stillman Valley

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com A Richton Park man has been arrested on six charges, including vehicular hijacking and aggravated robbery, following a Feb. 9 incident in Stillman

Valley.

William Silas, 18, is in the Ogle County Jail after being arrested for vehicular hijacking, aggravated robbery, aggravated battery, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, aggravated assault and driving while license suspended.

He was arrested at approximately 9:40 p.m. after sheriff deputies responded to an address in Stillman Valley after receiving a report of a vehicular hijacking with a weapon.

On Tuesday, Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said Silas displayed a handgun during the incident. He said

the victim of the hijacking was not hurt.

“An Illinois State Trooper saw Silas fleeing from the vehicle afterwards. A K9 did a track of Silas. The incident did occur at a residence,” VanVickle said.

Silas did make an initial court appearance, but was held with no bond and will make another court appearance next week, VanVickle said.

Deputies conducted a lengthy investigation with the assistance of the Ogle County K9, Illinois State Police, Rockford Police and the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office.

Sex offender accused of assaulting teen

BY KATHLEEN SCHULTZ kschultz@saukvalley.com A 39-year-old Polo sexual predator is in Lee County jail on $300,000 bond, accused of sexually assaulting another teen.

Steven Andrew Johnson, arrested Monday in the 200 block of South Hennepin Avenue, is charged with criminal sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl, which carries 4 to 15 years in prison, and aggravated criminal sexual abuse, which carries 3 to 7 years.

The assault happened on Nov. 10, investigators say in court records.

Johnson is a registered sex offender after being convicted of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old in Lee County in 2003, when he was 23.

He was charged in Ogle County in May 2016 with aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a child younger than 18 and misdemeanor domestic battery; those charges were amended to add a felony count of failing to register as a sex offender, and he

was convicted on that count and given a year and a half of conditional discharge. He also was charged that June with being a sexual predator in a public park; that misdemeanor charge was dismissed.

Johnson was convicted in 2000 of seven counts of burglary; six counts of burglary and one of theft were dismissed; of forgery and burglary in 1998, in two separate cases, and of writing bad checks the year before, all in Lee County.

Building currently owned by county organization

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The Rochelle City Council unanimously approved a proposal Monday that would see the city buy and demolish the Hickory Grove Banquet & Convention Center, located at 1127 N. 7th St. in Rochelle.

The building is currently owned by the Ogle County Civic Center Authority Board. It would be bought for $1. The building has over $112,000 in past due utility bills and over $3.8 million worth of improvements were suggested in its last structural study in 2011, none of

which were done.

OCCCA is not a taxing body, and its only stream of revenue comes from its tenants. One month its revenue was about $1,600 and its utilities bill was close to $4,000.

“I listened to many meetings and listened to the financials,” Rochelle City Manager Jeff Fiegenschuh said. ”It became clear after the first meeting that they don’t have the revenue to keep that facility up in operation. Every month they got further and further behind. And they have other bills, too.”

Hickory Grove is planned to close on July 19, after its final event is held at its banquet center.

Fiegenschuh anticipates agreeing to the sale with OCCCA if their board approves it at its meeting on Feb. 19. The Ogle County website lists six vacancies on the OCCCA board, but Fiegenschuh

says the board does have enough for a quorum and vote.

The potential sale would be closed in March. Demolition would begin around mid-October.

Also approved at Monday’s council meeting was a proposal to enter into an engineering agreement with Willett, Hofmann & Associates for the demolition project at a cost of not to exceed $50,000. Fiegenschuh estimates the actual demolition will cost in the area of $250,000. The aim is for the building to be demolished and ready for sale and development by late 2020 or early 2021.

Fiegenschuh said he’s had two private parties interested in developing the site, but they didn’t want the current building. An appraiser refused to say what the building was worth because of

The City of Rochelle has worked with Hickory Grove in the past, despite not having a connection with it. The city sent a municipal crew to fix Hickory Grove’s sign when it was broken and got its elevator fixed after it was struck by lightning. Rochelle has its own utility service, Rochelle Municipal Utilities, which are owed back taxes by Hickory Grove.

“The facility would have been closed by now if it wasn’t for the city,” Fiegenschuh said. “If we don’t move forward with this, there will be no choice but to shut them off at some point. We can work with the eventual developer to recoup costs of utilities. We’ve also talked about stripping the building down

The building came under OCCCA’s control in the 1980s. A group of Rochelle residents wanted a grant for a community center to reopen the old Vagabond Resort that went bankrupt in the 1970s.

“We appreciate your comments,” Oregon Mayor Ken Williams said to the crowd on Wednesday. “We take them all seriously. An engaged community is a successful community.

Oregon resident Joshua Zumdahl was skeptical of how much traffic and benefit that the museum can bring to the downtown area.

“We’re going to bring another museum here?” Zumdahl said. “If this is going to draw all this tourism, how? Nobody knows this exists. I’m all for filling an empty space. But I don’t want my taxes going to keeping someone else’s business open.

There’s higher priorities than statues.”

If the lease is approved by the council, a director of the museum would be hired. A director would be paid 75 percent by CMAAA and 25 percent

by the city. The city’s share would come out of its economic development fund.

The director would work for the city 25 percent of the time and help with the development downtown and bring in shows, festivals and other tourism, Williams said.

The CMAAA includes representatives from governmental, not-forprofit organizations, and community leaders from Oregon. The organizations involved are Oregon School District, Oregon Park District, Oregon Public Library, Serenity Hospice & Home, Chana School, Oregon Depot, Village of Progress, and Ogle County Historical Society.

happen to Boy Scout Troops’ pinewood derbies if the building is turned into a museum.

“We have nowhere else,” Lehrke said. “We have no place to be able to put cars, chairs, track, people and everything else we need to do. We can’t go somewhere else and set up and spend four days doing it. It makes it really rough to serve the kids of this community.”

Lehrke said the building has been used for the races as well as storage of the equipment for as long as she has been with the scouts, at least 15 years.

Continuing that wouldn’t be possible if the lease is approved, she said.

Jerry Moats asked if the Military Honor Roll that lists the name of local residents who have served in the military would remain intact if the building became a museum.

Officials said there was no intention to change the wall, located above the entrance of the main floor.

Kent Lawrence attended the meeting and spoke in support of the lease.

His organization, the Lawrence Foundation, is not on the CMAAA board, but he did structure it and the Lawrence Foundation has committed funding towards the salary of a director of a possible museum.

Lawrence, of Chicago, spends much of his time in Oregon and his foundation supports local causes.

“It is exciting,” Lawrence said.

“Because we can really have an impact here. This is one of the bigger projects. It has a great history and it’s a great place. It’s a great community.”

Jan Stilson spoke in favor of the museum proposal at the meeting.

Stilson is the Chairman of the Black Hawk Area Restoration and Development Committee and thinks Oregon is known for its art and culture and benefits from it.

“With this Black Hawk project, the news has gone coast to coast,” Stilson said. “And BARD is in favor of this museum. We can have all kinds of programs all year long. People that come here for art use our services like restaurants and gasoline.”

Tom Mahoney, president of the Coliseum Museum of Arts, Antiquities and Americana - the group that would oversee the museum - opened the meeting with a presentation of what the museum would look like.

The main floor of the building was marked with tape and chairs showing how much space would remain after adding the removable exhibits.

The stage would remain in the building, Mahoney said.

“We see this building as being underutilized,” Mahoney said. “We want more traffic here. Our vision is to have displays with local art.

There’s Lorado Taft work, dioramas that he made. We would have an event that’s an exhibit of Americana like toys, tractors or trains.”

The city would effectively become landlords to CMAAA, leasing it to the group for $1 a year for 49 years.

The city would still be responsible for upkeep of the building, using funds that come from a tax levied by the city for operational and maintenance expenses.

Currently, the Coliseum can be rented by groups and individuals for a variety of uses. But Williams said the city recently did a study on the last three years on who had rented the building and for what purpose and found that it is empty 95 percent of the time.

He said the city brings in approximately $3,000 from the Coliseum per year in rental fees.

Mt. Morris resident Chris Corcoran, an Oregon native, said he started a petition drive against leasing the Coliseum to CMAAA. He presented the 100-signature petition to the council on Wednesday.

He and a few others who spoke at the meeting, suggested the issue should be put up for a referendum to be voted on by the city residents.

“Let the people here decide,” Corcoran said. “It’s a building that everyone pays taxes on. Five people shouldn’t decide.”

Williams disagreed. “We were elected to assume the responsibilities of running the city,” Williams said. “Therefore we try to take all the input. Each council member will have their own thoughts on it. They talk to their own folks.”

The Coliseum is funded by a specific tax paid by Oregon residents.

Yearly, it amounts to about $32,000 in funds. It only costs about $7,000 to keep it open and operational each year. The remainder of that money goes into a long-term reserve for later repairs on the building. The reserve currently holds about $170,000, Williams said.

Black Hawk Statue has a history of “restorations” Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

This was the headline in the 2013 Los Angeles Times written by Clifford Ward and Ted Gregory. What follows is some of the story.

The slightly mournful face of what some might consider the Illinois Statue of Liberty has weathered its 102 years remarkably well. It’s a focal point of the Eternal Indian, a 50 foot statue that towers over the Rock River stands 100 miles west of Chicago.

But the body is so deteriorated that a flip of a finger can loosen chucks of its concrete surface. Deep cracks and gaping pock marks are spread throughout the statue.

Now as winter looms, Frank and Charron Rausa have less concerns about whether the beloved figure is eternal. They simply want it to last until spring.

Then they will launch a crucial $700,000 restoration of the statue known by the name of the Native Indian leader Black Hawk and has drawn support of a certain National Hockey League organization.

“When we were there the other day, I just said ‘Hold on, Chief, help’s on its way’,” said Charron Rausa, 77, of Sterling. “We’re praying that we don’t have a really bad winter, because he’s in bad shape.”

Charron sat at the kitchen table and said, Frank the American people fixed the Statue of Liberty. Now doggone it we need to fix the Black Hawk Statue.

Frank had worked as a grant writer so he wrote a grant to acquire funding for the restoration, but it failed.

The couple established a nonprofit, (Friends of the Black Hawk Committee).

They also embarked on a speaking tour of local organizations. They encouraged school children to contribute coins to save Black Hawk.

The Dillon Foundation in Sterling, the Department of Natural Resources, and the Jeffris Family Foundation in Janesville contributed financial aid.

Preliminary work started when this article appeared in the Los Angeles Times. Engineers examined the 100-ton statue with ultrasound which was determined to be the second largest monolithic statue in the world.

They followed the ultrasound examinations by obtaining core sam-

ples to determine the original materials and the extent of the damage.

A head-to-toe was started in the spring of 2014.

Rausa explained the head was solid concrete which explained why it fared better that the hollow body.

The statues original pinkish hue was created by mixing granite chips from New England into the concrete.”

The article’s final statements gave a short history of Lorado Taft, Black Hawk, and the Sac and Fox Indians.

“The restoration will run four to six months. Frank Rausa said an ideal conclusion would be to finish in time for Oregon Trail Days in July.”

Finally I was impressed that this article appeared in the Los Angeles Times and the reporters mentioning the Eternal Indian is the Illinois Statue of Liberty.

A Road Scholar Program by Bryan Murley John Peter Altgeld was Illinois’ first “progressive” governor, serving from 1893-1897. An immigrant, he fought for workers’ rights, women’s rights, penal reform, child labor laws, and angered industrialists by refusing to break up the Pullman Strike.

Throughout his public life, Altgeld learned much about how the press could twist and obscure the facts of events to present “fake news.” Yes, “fake news” was as much a problem for the 19th century as it is today.

The difference for us is that there are more tools available to combat lies and distortions created by political operatives intent on damaging the credibility of legitimate news. How can we as citizens in a democracy better navigate the oceans of information surrounding us and make sense of it all?

Rock Valley College Community and Continuing Education will host a free session on “Life Stories: Why Write Yours,” by genealogy and life story expert Curt Witcher on Wednesday, Feb. 19.

Witcher will explain how to easily find reliable sources, build information, and harness the power of photographs to preserve and protect this information for future generations.

“Knowing one’s story is very powerful, sometimes life changing,” said Witcher. “It is the best gift one can give to our children and grandchildren. Everyone has a story—everyone came from someone. Engaging in discovering one’s family history is open to all. It is truly the adventure of a lifetime.”

The session will be held 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Jacobs Center for Science and Math (JCSM), room 1104, on the main Rock Valley College campus, 3301 N. Mulford Road, in Rockford.

Bobcats to be topic at Feb. 16 lecture The Byron Forest Preserve District will be hosting the second of its 2020 Winter Lecture Series on Sunday, Feb. 16 starting at 2 p.m. at the Jarrett Prairie Center Museum located at 7993 North River Road, Byron.

Jennifer Kuroda, founder of the Illinois Bobcat Foundation, will cover every facet of the elusive cats, including history, biology, predator perception and management and will speak about the ongoing bobcat population study

by Dr. Christopher Jacques at Western Illinois University.

Bobcats, named for their short, bobbed tails, are about twice the size of a common house cat. They use their keen sight and hearing

to hunt rabbits, squirrels, small rodents and some birds.

They are mostly nocturnal, reclusive animals that prefer forested or wooded areas. Once hunted almost to extinction in the Midwest, bobcats have been making a comeback in recent years.

This lecture is free and no advance registration is required to attend.

cling Program recently wrapped up and was successful despite some weather difficulties.

Even though the winter has been very mild, timely winter storms hampered the local high school FFA collections as the safety of the students took priority.

There were approximately 500 trees that were chipped in Ogle County this year, which is about 13 tons of waste diverted from the landfill.

About 15,400 trees have been recycled since the beginning of the program in the winter of 1998-1999, which is about 386 tons of trees that have been kept out of the landfill.

Drop offs were located in seven communities, including Byron, Forreston, Leaf River, Monroe Center, Oregon, Polo, and Rochelle.

In addition, high school FFA organizations from Byron, Oregon, Polo and Forreston were scheduled to collect trees on Jan. 11 and on Jan. 18.

The weather caused some difficulties each of those days, but the FFA programs adjusted and went out when

possible and coordinated with local street departments to ensure trees were collected.

The trees were all chipped into usable mulch, which is available at some of the sites for pick-up.

Season ends for Oregon at regional

Oregon has had to make due without its top inside player, sophomore Jenae Bothe, for the last 2 weeks due to the flu. That forced senior wing player Olivia Lambrigtsen away from her natural position to the paint.

Lambrigtsen led the Hawks with 14 points, but was just 5-for-17 from the field. The Hawks struggled as a team, shooting just 16-for-59 overall.

“We got a little impatient,” coach Lambrigtsen said. “We were breaking the press, which was good, but then it was one pass, one shot, and that doesn’t do you any good if you’re not making the shot. So you have to break them down in halfcourt offense, and we did not have the patience to do that tonight.”

DeHaan and Lauren Montavon each had six points for Oregon, and Kitzmiller added five. Montavon also had a team-high eight rebounds.

It’s already been a banner season for the West Carroll girls program.

With each win, it adds to a school record that was 13 entering the season. The arrow is pointed straight up for the future, as there is not a senior on the roster.

Sometimes coaching a basketball team can be a simple proposition, and that’s the situation West Carroll coach Paul Waitkoss found himself in Monday night.

He had a player, junior guard Madison Haynes, who was feeling it. The plan was to get her touches whenever possible, and it helped the Thunder to a 46-38 victory against Oregon in a Rock Falls Regional quarterfinal in Tabor Gymnasium.

Haynes dropped in a 19 first-half points on 7-for-15 shooting, and staked West Carroll to a 26-20 lead it never relinquished.

“When she’s hot, we just keep feeding her,” Waitkoss said. “She’s not really a natural scorer, but when you’re hot, get her the ball.”

Haynes cooled off a bit in the second half, but still finished with 24 points. She also had eight rebounds and three steals.

“I felt like once you make one shot, you’ve got to keep going,” Haynes said. “My team helped out a lot.

They passed the ball, did a good job rebounding and played good defense.

It definitely wasn’t just a me thing.”

West Carroll (17-14) began the second half with a 9-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Kylie Hill with 3:27 to go in the third quarter, to build a 35-22 lead, its largest of the game.

Oregon coach Wendy Lambrigtsen eventually went to a more athletic lineup, including juniors Jadyn Bothe and Ashlyn Kitzmiller, as well as sophomore Lily Gillingham, to change things up. They provided a spark, especially on defense, to get the Hawks back into it.

Oregon (16-16) got to within three points (41-38) after a short jumper from Bothe with 55 seconds to go. On West Carroll’s ensuing possession, some swarming Hawks defense produced a turnover and a fast-break opportunity. Breanna DeHaan was whistled for double dribble, however, negating an almost sure score.

The Thunder hit 5 of 6 free throws in the final 33 seconds to polish off the win.

“Our speed was what was going to help us stop the bleeding a little bit,” Lambrigtsen said. “We didn’t quite

Tough going for Hawk wrestlers at Polo regional Hawks fail to advance to sectional

BY RANDY HOLLAND Everybody knew that the IHSA Polo Regional would be a meat grinder with top ranked Dakota, second ranked Lena-Winslow-Stockton, and eighth ranked Dixon thrown together.

Add in honorable mentions Stillman Valley and West Carroll and ranked wrestlers in every bracket, it had to be tough.

It was really tough on the Oregon Hawks.

Only three Oregon wrestlers made to the medal round and all three finished fourth and will be alternates to the Oregon Sectional starting next Friday and continuing Saturday at 10 a.m.

“It is really disappointing to not get anyone out,” said Hawk Head Coach Kip Crandall. “The only thing I can say is that I am extremely proud of these kids.”

Crandall pointed to the injury and illness that befell the Hawks in December.

“A lot of teams would have fallen apart with everything that happened to us, but not these guys,” he said.

Oregon had just a couple of upperclassmen to lead a largely freshman team. “There was remarkable improvement as the season went on and we did some good things,” he added. “I am just sorry it had to end here.”

Dakota easily took the team title with 238.5 points, taking six first places, two seconds and two thirds.

Only one of their 14 wrestlers did not make the medal round. Second place Lena had 193.5 points and four champions, four seconds, and a third place. Stillman was a distant third with 117 points with two runners-up and three third places. Fourth place Dixon, 112 points, had one champ and three more qualifiers.

Fifth place West Carroll sent six to the medal round and had a champ, three seconds and a third.

Fulton had four advance and Byron sends two champions and a third place to the next level.

Lane Halvorson at 106, Seth Stevens at 126, and Jokiah Sewell at 160 represented the Hawks on the third place mat.

All three had advanced to the championship semifinals and lost to the eventual champion.

Altherr at 138 pounds and Gabe Eckerd at 145 pounds. Edwin Estrada, 113, Adam Glendenning, 182, Jonathon Alaniz, 195, and Evan Flaharty, 285 all dropped from the competition in the wrestleback quarterfinals.

Halvorson got a takedown in a cradle before he went high with a half nelson and pinned at 1:11 in his opener Facing sixth ranked Garrett Luke of Lena in the semifinal, Halvorson was taken down in an outside single and pinned in a cradle at 1:21. In the consolation semifinal, he went out front with a half nelson to lead 5-2 after the first period.

They traded reversals in the second and he lost a reverse with 20 seconds left in the match, escaping from a cradle late to take an 8-6 win.

Halvorson just couldn’t get anything going in the third place match against Chris Sitter of Dixon.

He scored five escapes but lost takedowns in every period and a reverse in the second in a 10-5 loss.

Stevens met Connor Eubanks of Polo in his opener. After a scoreless first, he picked up a stalling point, an escape and worked off the head for a takedown in the second. He

gave up a takedown in the third but escaped and held on for a 5-2 win.

In the semifinal against Jaden Rice of Le-Win, Stevens lost a double leg takedown in the first and an escape in the second before just missing a takedown to the back.

He managed a late escape and went down 5-1. In the consolation semifinal, Stevens put up the first points when he reversed out the back with 40 seconds left in the second and he rode tough the third period, to take a 2-1 win.

Against Trapper Hartmann of West Carroll in the third place match it was over quickly. Stevens got caught in a throw and pinned in 51 seconds.

Sewell got the first takedown in the quarterfinal and escaped to start the second but he lost a counter and went to his back in a cradle, saved by the buzzer.

Down by one in the third, Sewell caught a body lock and pinned at 5:53. In the semifinal against third ranked Aiden Nardin of Dakota , Sewell had a wild first period with a series of reverses, Sewell on his back twice, and scoring a late outside single to trail 10-6.

After trading reverses in the second, he lost two takedowns in the third to drop a 17-9 major decision.

In the consolation semifinal, Sewell had a for tilt two points in the first period and stopped a stand and took his opponent to his back at 2:13.

In the third place match against Marcus McKenna of Polo, Sewell looked to be in control with two takedowns and an escape, but he tried a throw and got countered to his back to fall behind 6-5 at the end of two.

Sewell scored a high crotch takedown but let McKenna up and lost a bow and arrow takedown with 30 seconds left to go down 10-7.

In his opener against the eventual champion, sixth ranked Lucas Sutherland of Dakota, Altherr was taken down in a half nelson and pinned in 29 seconds.

In consolation, Altherr had three takedowns and pulled a wing back for a 9-2 first period lead. A takedown in a headlock at the start of the second and a step over for three more points completed a 17-2 technical fall at 3:32.

In the semifinal, Altherr got roughed up. He was taken to his back at the start, managed a reverse, but was on his back twice in the second and pinned with a chicken wing at 3:32.

Eckerd drew eventual champion Simon Rille of Le-Win in the quarterfinal. He hung with him in the first period and was down 2-0, but Rille cranked it up in the second with three sets of backpoints. Eckerd went over again in the third and was pinned in a half nelson at 4:56.

In the first wrestleback, he went right to work with a tilt and a chicken wing for a 7-0 lead after one and hooked up another chicken wing in the second for a pin at 2:58. In the semifinal, Eckerd was down 2-1 in the second when he slipped and fell and was taken to his back for three points.

Working from behind, he escaped and hit an outside single in the second. He escaped to get within three in the third but lost two takedowns and he went down 12-6.

In the quarterfinal, Estrada got quickly taken down in a high crotch and turned with a half nelson out front and was pinned in 43 seconds by second place finisher Dillon Raab of Lena.

In the consolation semifinal, Estrada got the first takedown but lost a late escape and another to start the second. Then he lost a takedown to his back and another take-

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com In its regular-season finale against Kewanee on Feb. 7, Oregon couldn’t have asked for a more evenly matched opponent.

Both teams had fairly similar records, were about the same height, and balanced one another out in rebounding and turnovers.

Probably the main difference in Kewanee’s 45-36 win over the Hawks was shooting percentage. The Boilers shot 39% (19-for-49), compared to 24% (14-for-59) for Oregon.

“We have our days, and today was one of them. The last three games, we hadn’t shot so well,” Kewanee coach Jessica Shipley said. “We came in looking to move the ball around and get the best shot.”

Oregon (16-15) tried to do the same thing, but couldn’t find the bottom of the net as much as Kewanee (16-14), as both game plans mirrored each other.

“We tried to close out on them,” Shipley said. “Looking at film, we

knew Olivia [Lambrigtsen] and No. 15 [Lauren Montavon] would get 10-15 points, but we wanted to cut down on their scoring.”

Lambrigtsen had 10 before fouling out with 4:11 left in the game.

Moments before, she scored a 3-pointer and another basket to cut the Boilers’ lead to 42-34.

“Olivia was playing inside and outside,” said her mother and coach Wendy Lambrigtsen. “It was hard for her to get into a flow. We just had difficulty moving the ball overall.”

One reason for Olivia Lambrigtsen playing inside was to make for the absence of post player Jenae Bothe, who is out for the second week because of illness.

“I tried to practice one day this week and it didn’t work out,” Bothe said. “It’s unlikely I will be able to make it back. We’ll have to look ahead to next year.”

down late in the third period to lose a 12-4 major decision, an escape and penalty point too late to help his cause.

Glendenning started against eventual third place medalist Logan Jennings of Stillman Valley. He scored a switch in the first period and trailed 5-2 after one.

He was reversed in a granby at the start of the second, losing two backpoints, and had a chance on a drive but came up short.

Glendenning was turned in a chicken wing late in the second and a lost takedown to the back in the third finished a 17-2 technical fall loss at 5:09.

In consolation, Glendenning lost two early takedowns and was on his back in a half nelson before he was turned with a cradle and pinned in a half nelson at 1:43 In his opener, Alaniz was behind 7-0 after the first, caught in two cradles. He chose the top in the second and went from a power half to a half nelson to pin at 2:22.

Against third ranked and eventual champion Sebastian Quintana of Dixon in the quarterfinal, Alaniz lost a quick takedown and was pinned in a neck wrench in 32 seconds.

The season ended for the freshman when, trailing 3-0, he lost a switch to start the second and was turned with a power half and pinned at 3:08 in the wrestleback quarterfinal.

In his opening match, Flaherty lost takedowns in every period and was fighting off half nelsons throughout the match.

He gave up two points on one in the second period and trailed 9-0 when he was pinned with another with five seconds left in the match. In consolation, Flaherty was driven to his back in a half nelson at 1:17 to end his season.

Ella Martin, the team’s 3-point shooting specialist, nailed a pair of them to start the third quarter, briefly giving Oregon a 21-20 lead. But Kewanee responded with baskets on six straight possessions, with two each by Gracey Damron and Isabella Tondreau.

“We were focused on the box-out, especially on the weak side, and just weren’t getting to the shooters,” Coach Lambrigtsen said. “The ball was coming over our heads. That’s where not having Jenae in hurt us.”

In the fourth quarter, Oregon struggled to find an open shot, while Kewanee had much better ball movement.

“We just weren’t selective with our interior passing, and missing interior shots we normally make,” Coach Lambrigtsen said.

Boys Swimming Rockford Auburn 86, Byron 63: Carson Faley won a pair of individual events for the Byron co-op in a dual loss. Faley won the 200 IM (2:07.91) and the 100 freestyle (50.89 seconds) for the Tigers.

Feb. 7 Boys Basketball Oregon 52, Red Bud 47: The Hawks won the first game on their trip to southern Illinois.

Feb. 8 Girls Bowling Oregon 2nd at Dixon regional: The Hawks rolled

a 5,899 to finish behind only South Elgin (5,930), and had three bowlers finish in the top seven individually at Plum Hollow as they advanced to next weekend’s Kaneland Sectional.

Sammantha Meyers took third with a six-game series of 1,324, and she rolled at least a 200 in all six games, with a 257 second game in the morning as the best. Rebbeca Meyers finished fifth with a 1,259 that included four 200+ games, topped by a 247 third game in the morning session. Alysa Conley’s 1,204 was good for seventh place, and included a 258 final game in the afternoon. Ava Wight rolled a 1,074 that placed 22nd individually.

Feb. 10 Girls Basketball Class 2A Rock Falls Regional Byron 45, Erie-Prophetstown 33: The Tigers prevailed in the regional quarterfinal thanks to 10 points each from Ella Grundstrom and Ava Kultgen.

Izzie McKinley and Grace Kultgen also added eight apiece. Ella Heyvaert and Alex Cannavo each scored nine points for Erie-Prophetstown, and Mak Glassburn added eight. The Tigers will meet Winnebago in a regional semifinal on Wednesday, Feb. 12.

Polo wrestling regional had perfect “atmosphere” U

nfortunately, I am assigned to cover the 2A wrestling sectional instead one of my favorite sporting events of the year – the 1A sectional at the Blackhawk Center.

One consolation for me is having experienced the Polo wrestling regional last Saturday.

With all the talent assembled, it might as well been a sectional. And, the atmosphere at the jam-packed Polo gym was comparable to what is found at a sectional.

I know the IHSA likes to give different schools a chance to host regionals, but I could handle it being at Polo all the time. With bleachers on both sides close to the gym floor, there’s a sense of intimacy not found at the Blackhawk Center.

However, you need a large venue like Oregon to handle all that a sectional entails, including having room for more mats.

Either way, both sites are ideal and the personnel at Polo and Oregon do a tremendous job as hosts.

It is possible that the attendance at Polo surpassed anything found at a 2A or 3A regional.

Wrestling fans are different than basketball in the intensity level.

Of course, when you have 11 schools represented instead of two, like what you do for basketball, it is bound to be more vocal.

I love to look out in the stands and see each school with their own cheering section. Another difference between basketball and wrestling fandom is the stamina required.

A basketball game is over within a couple hours. A wrestling tournament can take all day and those bleachers don’t get any softer as the day goes on.

For me, it was just a lot of fun hanging around

Polo’s gym all afternoon. And, unlike basketball, there is more of an opportunity for socializing at wrestling.

Once a basketball game starts, a fan is glued to the activity at hand. With hundreds of wrestling matches being contested, it is a difference dynamic.

Pete Alber, coach of winning Dakota, told me the IHSA needs to start seeding wrestling, so as to avoid powerhouse Le-Win/Stockton and Dakota facing each other before the state tourney.

There had to be some way to do that before, as Byron and Oregon made it downstate in the same years when both were in their hey days. But, that was before a 3-class system and it also may have allowed for the first and second-place teams from a regional to move on to the team sectional dual, as well.

The problem with Dakota and LW/S is being landlocked so far away in northwest Illinois. It would be difficult to separate them.

Regardless of the big Dakota-LW/S showdown, the news that stunned me the most was Oregon not having a single wrestler advance to the sectional.

This from a traditionally strong program that had four state placers last year and won 10 straight regionals from 1995-2004.

I know I need to stop living in the past, but it used to be that most of the whole team got out of the regional.

Then at the sectional, it wasn’t uncommon for 3-4 guys to make state.

In the history of Hawk wrestling, I doubt there’s ever been a year without someone not making it out of a regional.

The reason I need to stop living in the past is that I’m told Oregon wrestling is on the rise, both at the fresh-soph level and the grade school.

Could we see a resurgence?

Wrestling is the toughest of all high-school sports and we will have to wait and see how many kids stick it out to varsity. That’s the real sticking point.

It would be nice to have the Hawks contending with the Dakota and Le-Win. Certainly, what used to be the domain of Oregon, Byron and Stillman Valley has been taken over by the two NUIC powers.

When it comes to individual state champs, nobody tops Dakota. The Indians have 43 of them, followed locally by Newman 36, Stillman 23, Byron 15 and Le-Win/Stockton at 10.

Oddly, Oregon only has two with Tony Pedrosa in 2001 and Brandon Sklavanitis in 2013. The program does have eight state dual meet trophies, though, giving credence to their reputation as a team over individuals.

With Dan Hartman (1982), Cort Lawton (2006) and Jake Peterson (2010), Polo even bests Oregon for individual champs.

Finally, the best wrestler I covered that did not win a state title, but was certainly worthy of it was Jeremy Benesh of Oregon. Sometimes, certain brackets can be tougher than others.

He does it in an attempt to stay calm and quiet. But he was still heard directing his son to take a charge in a Feb. 4 game against Mendota. It had been three games since Trey had taken one.

“We butt heads all the time,” Michael Woolsey said. “He knows when I’m serious and when I’m trying to help him. Everything I tell him, I’m trying to help him.”

Michael was in the stands last week when Trey, an Oregon senior, broke the school’s all-time scoring record of 1,598 points, set by Bob Barnett 41 years ago.

The Woolseys have bonded over basketball as long as they can remember. Michael played in college and for a semi-pro team. He even squared off once against former NBA-All Star Larry Johnson in a junior college game in Texas. He’s passed on all he learned to his son.

“He’s a lot better than I ever was,” Michael Woolsey said. “I wasn’t the leading scorer for Oregon, Illinois.”

Michael can often be found at 5 a.m. on the court at NASH. Trey can be found with him or in the gym at the school at the same time, a work ethic he inherited from Michael and his mother, Missy.

Usually, Trey blocks out whatever is going on in the crowd at games.

But sometimes, if Oregon (14-11) is up a lot on the scoreboard, he’ll glance at the stands and see his dad cheering, sometimes more for other players than he does for him.

“He’s definitely harder on me,” Trey said. “But I don’t mind it.

Doing that, it just shows how much he cares for me and his passion.

Trey has played on the varsity team since he was a freshman. He’s added weapons to his game as years have gone by.

Woolsey’s jump shot nearly starts at the waist. It’s a fluid windup.

He used to shoot with two hands before fixing his shot before freshman year. You can still see a hint of the two-hand style in his free throw stroke, but he makes them.

The 6-foot-5, 200-pound point

and sometimes unwelcome in the region. A hard-nosed, team-first style fits Northern Illinois better.

But it doesn’t fit Woolsey.

“I can see why people don’t like the way I play,” Woolsey said. “It doesn’t affect me, though. Especially when you have good people around you, you can’t really worry about what the outside haters say.”

“He definitely likes playing that style when people don’t want to see it,” Oregon coach Quinn Virgil said.

“Sometimes we try to pull the reins on him a bit. When he gets out and going, he is tough to stop.”

Virgil’s coaching style has rubbed off on Woolsey. He gives his players the green light. His teams play up tempo and attack. Some bad shots come as a result, but when they’re right, so is the scoreboard.

Virgil says he first noticed Woolsey in fifth or sixth grade. He’s only had one other player spend as much time on varsity as Trey has. How has Woolsey changed most? Maturity.

“He really hasn’t had any meltdowns on the floor where sophomore year sometimes things would get under his skin and if there was a crowd, player or bad call he’d let that affect the game,” Virgil said.

“He hasn’t done that this year.”

“Playing with emotion is very dangerous,” Woolsey said. “It can either lead you to success or your downfall. When people are talking, it makes me play better now I feel like. Back in the day, it made me play better but sometimes I get way too out of control. Now I feel like I’m at a happy medium.”

Woolsey doesn’t have plans for college yet. He’s talked with schools but is currently undecided. Virgil thinks his best days are ahead of him, especially when he can focus on one position in college. His father believes his ceiling is lower Division I. Exposure to colleges at a smaller school like Oregon has been a problem. Playing AAU with stars from last year’s Rockford East State Finals team like Sincere Parker and Sha’Den Clanton helped.

Woolsey and his family considered moving to Rockford to help with exposure, but he couldn’t leave his teammates. Woolsey believes this year’s Oregon team is the one he’s been closest with in his entire career.

It’s his hope to bring Oregon a regional title before all is said and done. His legacy, and record, will make him missed once he’s gone.

“We’ll be missing about 27 points per game,” Virgil said.

500 trees collected through recycling program Christmas trees were collected and chipped up into useful mulch The annual Ogle County Christmas tree collection and chipping program recently wrapped up around the county with a total of just over 500 trees collected and chipped up into useful mulch.

That is a total of around 25,000 pounds or roughly 12 tons of trees not headed to the landfill.

Since program year 1999 a total of almost 16,000 trees, roughly 400 tons, have been recycled into mulch and not ended up in the landfills.

Starting on December 26, people dropped off trees at locations in Rochelle, Byron, Oregon, Monroe Center, Polo, Forreston, and Leaf River.

Rochelle residents placed trees out by the curb and the street department came out and chipped them at the curb.

In certain areas local Future Farmers of America (FFA) volunteers collected trees and brought them to the drop-off point for chipping.

This year, despite the mild winter, was challenging for the FFA students and advisors as winter storm

FFA volunteers in Byron, Forreston, Polo, and Oregon worked together with local street departments to get the trees collected as they dodged winter ice storms.

Roughly 110 trees were picked up in these areas by either the FFA stu-

dents or by the street department.

The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD) coordinates the program and wishes to thank all of the volunteers, municipalities, street departments, and FFA students and teachers who actually do the work and handle the

trees.

This program will continue for 2020 and into 2021.

Anyone interested in free mulch from the trees, please call the OCSWMD at 815-732-4020 for more information and sites where mulch will be available.

Aldo Leopold program at Wild Ones on Feb. 20 Aldo Leopold, Phenology, and Climate Change will be the topic at the next Wild Ones program on Thursday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. at Rock Valley College.

Aldo Leopold, best known as the author of A Sand County Almanac, was a keen observer of the natural world.

Throughout his life he kept daily journals recording observations of seasonal events, especially those occurring at his beloved “shack” on the Leopold farm, the setting for many of his essays.

Leopold’s meticulous phenological observations provide an unparalleled record of when plants bloomed, birds migrated, and other natural events took place.

Comparing his notes to recent records helps to understand how climate change is affecting the

ecological community.

Stanley A. Temple is the Beers-Bascom Professor Emeritus in Conservation in the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

He will talk about the lessons learned from Leopold’s journals, and how the records Leopold kept are an invaluable resource for documenting effects on plants and animals from climate change.

Temple is currently a senior fellow with the Aldo Leopold Foundation, where he continues to work on local and global conservation issues. He has received major conservation awards from the Society for Conservation Biology, the Wildlife Society, and the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology, among others.

He has served as chairman of the board of The Nature Conservancy in Wisconsin and has authored more than 300 papers on ecology and conservation.

A storage shed and its contents, worth about $500,000, were destroyed by a fire at the Nachusa Grasslands on the morning of Feb. 5.

Franklin Grove Fire Department responded to the headquarters of the Grasslands, 2075 S. Lowden Road, around 6:45 a.m.

The Morton pole storage barn, located near the headquarter’s barn, stored Grasslands’ mobile apparatus: six water trailer sprayers, six utility trailers, a tractor and a pickup truck.

All of those items were a total loss, said Gelasia Croom, spokeswoman for the Nature Conservancy, the owner of the 3,600-acre prairie.

An estimated $500,000 worth of damage was done, Franklin Grove Fire Lt. David Haas said.

The fire took four hours to contain and did not spread to nearby fields or affect the nearby bison habitat. A replacement shed will be rebuilt, Nachusa Project Director Bill Kleiman said last week.

Arson is not suspected, and the state fire marshal is investigating the cause.

No one was injured.

Illinois State Police District 1 Commander, Captain Matthew Hodgdon, announced District 1 enforcement figures and activity for January.

Illinois State Police District 1 Troopers issued 423 citations, 430 written warnings, and made 17 criminal arrests during the month of January.

Speeding accounted for 248 citations, 21 citations were issued for occupant restraint violations, and 17 citations were issued for distracted driving violations.

Troopers investigated 27 traffic crashes, assisted 187 motorists, and conducted 157 commercial vehicle inspections, 12 of which were placed out-of-service for safety reasons. There were 3 arrests for driving under the influence.

District 1, which encompasses Carroll, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside counties, had 1 traffic crash fatality in January.

OBITUARIES LOLA M. BUNTJER Lola M. Buntjer, 87, of Polo, passed away Monday, Feb. 3, 2020, at KSB Hospital in Dixon.

Lola was born Feb. 8,1932, in Polo, the daughter of Ernest and Ethel (Fry) Warnken Sr. She worked for Central Quality in Polo for many years. Lola enjoyed a good auction, gardening in the summer, fishing or sitting with a good book.

RUTH ESTHER DRAKE Ruth Esther Drake, 90, passed away peacefully on Feb. 4, 2020 at Liberty Village Manor Court in Freeport after a full and happy life.

She was born on the family farm in Ogle County, Illinois on April 7, 1929 to Esther (Link) Drake and Alfred Henry Drake.

Ruth graduated from Forreston High School in 1947, Cornell College in 1951 and received her Master’s Degree from Rockford College.

JAMES D. LEWIS James D. Lewis, 82, of Pinehurst, North Carolina, passed peacefully at his home on Friday, Feb 7, 2020 surrounded by family.

Jim was born on Feb 17, 1937 in Rice Lake, Wisconsin and grew up in Forreston.

He attended the University of Illinois and served in the United States Army.

Survivors include daughter Carla (Dave) Wagner of Polo; sons Tom Fossett of Rock Falls, Bob (Deb) Fossett of Dixon and Ken (Kathy) Fossett of Sterling; grandchildren Nicole (Al) Friese, Nathan Fossett, Brandon Fossett and Andrea (Donny) Byer; and seven great-grandchildren She was preceded in death by her grandson Jaime Dingley; brothers Ernest She was a band and music teacher for 30 years at Polo Junior and Senior High Schools before retiring in 1984.

Ruth was also very involved in Antique Doll Collecting. She was a member of the ILL/WIS Antique Doll Club and served as the Regional Director (Region 10) of the United Federation of Doll Clubs for several years.

In her free time, Ruth loved teaching her nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews about music. She assisted them with lessons and concerts, and also helped with many of their 4H projects.

Ruth was an active board member of the Freeport Community Concert Association for many years. Dolls and music were her passion.

Ruth was also very active in her faith and was a 73-year member of the First United Methodist Church, Forreston.

During that time, she was the choir director for 45 years. She also really enjoyed being a member of the United Methodist Women and was the Presi-

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and her brother in law, Robert Lewis.

She leaves behind her sister of 86 years, Naomi Lewis. She was also a second mother to nieces and nephews, Kathy Plecki (Robert), Champaign; Kim Kemp (Michael), Phoenix, Arizona; Kent Lewis (Christie), Forreston; and Karl Lewis (Kristen), Cary.

Jim was happiest when he was spending time with family, attending his grandchildren’s activities and watching Carolina basketball. He played, coached and watched basketball, volunteered and served the church and community and was a life-long singer, performing as a soloist and in church choirs.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Lewis; daughters, Lori Amato (Herb) of Harrisonburg, Virginia; Holly Davis (Carty) of Pinehurst; sons, David Lewis (Janine) of Columbia, South Carolina; Matt Lewis

Kemp, Dylan Lewis, Sophie Lewis, Jonathon Lewis, Andrew Lewis and one loving great niece Allyson Clasey.

Ruth also leaves behind second cousin and close friend, Kenneth Drake and many wonderful and caring neighbors and friends.

Ruth’s visitation and funeral will be held on Saturday, Feb. 15 at the First United Methodist Church in Forreston. A short visitation from 10 a.m. to the time of the service will precede the funeral service, which will begin at 11 a.m., followed by burial at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

The family would like to thank the caring nurses, CNA’s and hospice staff at FHN and Liberty Village Manor Court for the comfort provided and support for Ruth and her family.

Warren B. Long, 89, graduated to his home in heaven on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2020.

Warren was born on March 3, 1930, the son of Warren H. and Esther M. Long of Rockford. Warren had three sisters and was the third child in the pecking order.

He joined the Army on Nov. 30, 1955.

On May 1, 1957 he married Lillian M. Zumdahl and shortly there after left for the Korean War. He returned 1 year, 3 months and 20 days later and was assigned to the role of Golf Club pro at Army bases in Louisiana and Texas. It was in those assign-

Donna was born on Oct. 14, 1939 in Rockford, the daughter of Vernon & Minnie (Diehl) Burke.

Donna graduated from Mt. Morris High Schoolclass of 1957. She married Richard R. Satterfield on Oct. 19, 1958 in Mt. Morris, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 8, 2012.

Donna worked for Kable News Company, Time Warner, and The Denver News retiring in 2004.

WALLACE DEAN MACKEY Wallace Dean Mackey, 88, of Polo, passed away Thursday, Feb. 6, 2020 at Polo Rehabilitation Center.

He was born Dec. 4, 1931 in Fair Haven, the son of Raymond D. and Anna Amelia (Yoeckel) Mackey.

He married Evelyn Louise Bickford on Feb. 3, 1951 and had just celebrated 69 years of marriage.

Wallace was a welder for the former Imeco in Polo for many years. After retirement he enjoyed helping his fellow neighbors with their yard work and taking long

Warren was an outstanding athlete in high school, but quit after his father died when he was 16. He finished his GED in the Army in 1957.

While in the Army he earned the designation of Sharpshooter and was the recipient of the Good Conduct Metal on multiple occasions. Upon his discharge from the military in 1962 the family returned to Mt. Morris and began farming.

Over his lifetime Warren did many things from farming to selling feed, operating a golf course as club pro to managing a restaurant with his wife; he even drove an 18 wheeler for a number
