Kids get unscheduled winter “vacation” Winter weather affected schools across county

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Forrestville Valley students finally returned to their classrooms Monday after an unscheduled “vacation” of almost two weeks.

Extreme winter weather caused the cancellation of school for seven of the last 10 days in the district.

And that was on top of a day off on Monday, Jan. 21 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Districts all over Ogle County and across northern Illinois dismissed around noon the following day, Jan. 22, with a snowstorm moving in.

Classes were called off again on Jan. 23 due to the road conditions from the six or more inches of drifting snow that fell.

It was back to class on Jan. 24, but more time off the next day because of road conditions and temperatures well below zero.

Then Old Man Winter really got down to business. Sunday evening into Monday, Jan. 28 brought at least six more inches of blowing snow followed by plummeting temperatures.

The low by early on Wednesday, Jan. 30 was -28 with north and northwest winds making it feel like an estimated -55.

On Thursday morning the mercury hit -38 in nearby Mt. Carroll, a state record for the coldest temperature ever.

Students in all local districts got all four days off. Many returned to class on Friday, Feb. 1, but not in the Forrestville Valley School District.

The cold claimed yet one more day, this time affecting their mode of transportation.

“The cold weather caused operational issues with our school buses and school was canceled on Friday, Feb. 1,” said

The impromptu vacation doesn’t come without a cost. Students will have to attend five more days than planned to make up for it.

Polo School Superintendent Chris Rademacher said the use of all five emergency days means the fourth quarter will end on June 6, rather than May 30.

Oregon Superintendent Tom Mahoney said students in that district will also go to school five extra days.

The district has moved a teachers’ institute day from Feb. 15 to the end of the year, allowing students to get out of school for the year on May 24. The last day of school had been scheduled for May 20.

Mahoney said he will initiate the process to have the additional emergency days declared Act of God Days.

The request needs the approval of the

Regional Office of Education and the Illinois State Board of Education.

Smith said school will likely end on June 5 as scheduled because the calendar has five days built into it for emergency days. However, some days previously scheduled as vacation may become attendance days.

The Forrestville Valley School Board was scheduled to approve a revised school calendar at a special meeting on Feb. 6.

On the bright side, spring could be here soon.

Last Saturday dawned cloudy and stayed that way until late morning — which means if the groundhog got up early enough, he definitely did not see his shadow.

And that, according to weather legend, means spring is “just around the corner.”

Warm temps helped fuel February Finds

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Almost spring-like temperatures on Saturday after a week of snow and bitter cold brought a buying crowd to the seventh annual February Finds Antiques and Collectible Market.

With the temperature nearing 40, an almost 70-degree upswing from three

days earlier, the parking lot at the Mt. Morris Moose Family Center was filled with cars by late morning.

Inside, two rooms in the center were filled with vendors greeting a steady stream of shoppers.

The atmosphere was cordial as shoppers and vendors discussed the items for sale and chatted with friends they made

in previous years at the event.

“I think everyone is glad to get out after last week,” said first time vendor Rhonda Heflin, of Rockford.

Tammy Provo, of Mt. Morris, a veteran vendor at the event agreed. “I think everybody is sick of being housebound,” she said.

Firefighters from more than a dozen area fire departments fought not only flames but also bitterly cold weather conditions Jan. 30 at a house fire approximately eight miles northeast of Chana. “We escalated the alarms because of the weather conditions to maximize equipment and manpower,� said Lynn-Scott-Rock Assistant Fire Chief Rick Mott.

Sheldon and Joyce Rueff safely escaped, along with their dog, from their burning home at 10134 E. Lindenwood Rd. just before 8 p.m. “They smelled smoke, saw smoke, and their fire alarms were going off, so they called 911 and got out of the house,� Mott said.

The fire was well advanced when the first trucks arrived at the 10 to 15 year-old one-story home, which was a total loss. “There was already heavy fire in the back on the exposed lower level,� Mott said.

Although the cause of the fire has not been definitely determined,

Mott said a fire in the fireplace is suspected. “We’re kind of zeroing in on that,� he said.

Sixty-three firefighters were on the scene with the mercury nearing -30 and wind chill in the -40s.

Mott said the engines pumping water froze up and had to be changed out, valves on engines were freezing open and shut, firefighters’ air packs were freezing up, and their face masks were freezing over. “The firefighters on the front line were covered with ice,� he said. “Luckily, the winds had died down somewhat by then. It was like an ice rink. Several firefighters fell but fortunately no one was hurt.�

Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle brought the sheriff’s department’s command trailer to the scene to use as a warming facility for the firefighters.

Some local firefighters and equipment were unavailable because they had already been called to assist the West Suburban Fire Department at a fire that destroyed a Rockford Township building the same night.

Ellen Bramm, of Mt. Morris, had her arms full of packages well before noon.

“I’m thrilled! I got two music boxes. She even had the boxes for them,” she said. “And good prices.

It’s been great!”

Lori Peterson, of Mt. Morris, held up a painting of London that she had just purchased.

“I’ve been here about three minutes and I’ve already found a painting I love,” she said.

In the other room, Darrel and Nylia Swalve, of Forreston, were taking a close look at the treasures offered by Mt. Morris vendors Howie Herman and Kris Brunner.

Nylia said they have come to the event in previous years.

“We look for local things,” she said. “This show has unusual things that you don’t always see.”

“We just buy what we like,” Darrel said. “We’ve been collecting a long time.”

Herman had good things to say about the market.

“It’s a great event. People love old stuff and there’s a lot of socializing going on,” he said.

Event organizer Edie White said an estimated 450 to 500 people attended the show.

“It was a steady crowd all day.

All the vendors were happy,” she said. “Besides being an antiques and collectibles market, it’s also a social event. A lot of local people come in the morning and stay all day.”

White said this year’s second recipient was the Mt. Morris Work Group for its restoration of the Price Fountain on the downtown campus.

Other recipients over the years include the Let Freedom Ring Festival, Mt. Morris Fire Department, Serenity Hospice & Home, and the Mt. Morris PEO Chapter.

Northern Illinois was home to several tribes Pottawatomies, Sac & Fox, Winnebagos lived in area Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK Much of this information comes from a book titled “The Early History of Northern Illinois” by Charles Knapp Carpenter printed

by Kable Brothers Company, Mt. Morris in 1948.

The Indians tribes we are familiar with were the second group of settlers following the Mound Builders to occupy the State of Illinois.

One source believed that Columbus misnamed the inhabitants of his 1492 discovery because he thought that he had reached India.

The more recent tribes were more warlike than their predecessors the Mound Builders.

Although the entire United States was occupied by the Indians, this country was not thickly settled.

One source estimated a few million people.

The Indian settlements were small and mobile.

Individual Indians did not own land. The land was owned or claimed by the tribe.

This ownership was challenged by other tribes and taken possession of after they were defeated in battle.

Each tribe wanted a large, unoccupied space around its village that they could use for hunting and fishing.

These spaces between the villages were also the causes of many battles.

There were no over-all Indian organizations governing large groups of Indians.

These people were divided into hundreds of tribes with a few hundred people being the limit per tribe.

Some of the tribes were friendly, spoke the same the same language and formed a loose federation and fought together in wars.

There was no common language.

In America there were many different languages so different

that they could not understand one another.

They usually built a village made of logs, slabs, and stones and used wigwams or tepees for hunting trips.

Locally several of our cities were once the site of Indian villages.

Examples cited by Charles Carpenter were Galena, Dixon, and Freeport.

Their clothing came from the skins of animals, bison, bear, rabbits, squirrels, etc.

Hunting and fishing provided their food. The forests provided fruit, nuts, mushrooms, etc.

Their gardens provided corn, pumpkins, etc. cultivated with stone spades.

Several different tribes and federations lived in Illinois.

The federation of Sacs and Foxes occupied the mid-section of northern Illinois.

The Winnebagos occupied the Galena area.

The Pottawatomies lived near Lake Michigan, and the warlike made their homes Kickapoos in the Peoria area.

The name of the Illinois tribe continued through our history since our state was originally named the Virginia Illinois Territory, then the Illinois Territory of the United States and finally Illinois.

The Indians did not have a written language although their names appear on maps all over Illinois.

Rivers, lakes, counties, villages, and many streets bear their names.

Very recognized names today are Winnebago and Pecatonica, and street names Erie, Dakota, Miami, Shawnee, etc.

Carpenter said he sailed his boat on the Pecatonica River, lived in Pecatonica in a county named Winnebago and in a state named Illinois.

Ben Franklin wrote, “Savages we call them, because their manners differ from ours, which we think we are the perfection of civility, and they think the same of theirs.”

Bancroft explained, “Savages?

Yes, they did many savage deeds.

They wrought many bloody pages in the history of our country. But why? The Indian wars were cruel, needless wars; if our soldiers won, it was without honor; if the Indians won, it was without hope.”

Thanks to the many people who spent their time and money to restore our treasured memory of the Eternal Indian, called Black Hawk.

Oregon Park District wins award for Farm to Table The Oregon Park District recently attended the annual Illinois Association of Park Districts and Illinois Park and Recreation Association conference in Chicago.

IPRA presented its 2018 Outstanding Program or Special Event Award in both Division I and Overall program to the Oregon Park District for their Farm to Table event held in July 2018.

The Farm to Table event was held at Oak Lane, Oregon this past summer and offered a unique dining experience. Local celebrity chefs prepared dinner featuring fresh, local ingredients.

The four-course dinner was paired with wine and was held as a fundraiser for the Oregon Park District Scholarship Fund.

The Outstanding Program or Special Event Award recognizes public agencies for their exceptional and unique achievements in program development and implementation.

“The Oregon Park District is honored to receive recognition for the Farm to Table Dinner,” said Erin Folk, Executive Director. “Our employees are our greatest asset and I am pleased to see them recognized for their creativity and professionalism when developing programs for our community to enjoy.

More than 50 youth participated in the 2019 4-H Day of Dabbling held Jan. 26 at the Oregon Church of God. Sponsored by University of Illinois Extension Ogle County, the annual event was open to all youth, ages 5-15.

It was designed to provide participants with the opportunity to explore numerous areas of 4-H project work hands-on.

Fifteen workshops were offered; each participant selected three. Project areas touched on included: visual arts, woodworking, birds, and science.

As a result of the workshop, participants took home creations ranging from slime to beaded wind chimes and candles to bird feeders.

Workshops were conducted by 4-H volunteers. ENAG artists to be featured in art show at the Byron Museum The Byron Museum of History will host an art show in February and March featuring the work of mainly local artists.

Use illustrations to comprehend text In recent years researchers have learned that there are several key strategies that good readers use to help them understand what they read.

Although good readers use multiple strategies at the same time it can be helpful for us to talk with our children and grandchildren about these key strategies separately as well.

Let’s begin in this column with a look at some ideas about why it is important for readers to become strategic and consider one early reading strategy.

Then for each of the next several columns we’ll look at another strategy and ways we can explore it as we read to and with our children and grandchildren.

It is important that children learn early on that reading should

Herbst, Milliman and Paul each won their weight divisions

Rock Falls finished sixth, advancing five wrestlers, and Byron, with three champions and a third place came in seventh. Polo was eighth with one runner-up, and Durand was ninth with one third place.

Herbst Wins Herbst had a first round bye and took just 1:02 to pin in the semifinal, a double chicken wing at the edge of the mat.

Scoreless in the second period of the championship against third ranked Maddux Blakely of Dakota, Herbst pulled a leg through for a reverse, then pulled Blakely straight back and pinned him at 2:55.

Herbst leads the team with a 38-1 record.

Milliman also had a quarterfinal bye. In the semifinal, he had four takedowns and a two point nearfall to take a 12-1 major decision.

In the championship match, Milli-

man had a little trouble early when tenth ranked Briar Nevills of West Carroll countered him into a cradle but he worked out it for a reverse into a half nelson, pinning at 1:19.

Milliman is 35-4 for the season.

Paul did not spend much time on the mat. He had a first round bye and hit a quick hip toss into a headlock and pinned in 27 seconds in the semifinal.

In the title match against Winston McPeek of Le-Win, Paul countered and rolled into a cradle for a takedown and two backpoints before he hooked up a high half nelson for a pin at 1:55.

That win extended his record to 36-4.

Crandall had an opening round bye and won 7-2 to advance to the semifinal where he avenged his dual meet loss to Blake Eder of Byron with a gutsy win. He trailed 4-3 when he let Eder up twice in the third period, scoring two takedowns, the last a

body lock with just two seconds left.

Crandall met ninth ranked Elijah Dertz of West Carroll in the first place match and never got on track in a 10-0 major decision loss.

Crandall is 31-10 on the season.

The fourth seed, Sewell hooked up a half nelson at the start of the second to pin at 2:17 in his opener.

In the semifinal, Sewell gave fifth ranked and tournament champion Jason Hermann of Lena all he could handle. Sewell just missed out of bounds on a strong double, and on the restart, Hermann countered him to his back in a turk for three points and he dropped an 8-0 major decision.

Sewell went from the butcher to the Saturday night for a pin at 3:53 in the consolation semifinals, and in the third place match against Alex Davies of Polo, he elevated and dropped into an outside cradle at

The Hawk wrestlers traveled to Mt. Carroll on Feb. 2 for arguably the toughest IHSA 1A Wrestling Regional in the state.

With second ranked LenaWinslow-Stockton, third ranked Dakota, fifth ranked Rock Falls, 10th ranked Byron, 17th ranked Sterling Newman, and host West Carroll ranked 23rd, there was plenty of competition to go around.

Add to that 28 top 10 ranked wrestlers and it was a meat grinder.

Oregon sent 11 wrestlers into that meat grinder and six made it through and will wrestle in the Byron Sectional starting Friday, Feb. 8. The sectional starts at 4:30 p.m. and continues on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Representing Oregon will be 106 pound regional champion Andrew Herbst, 113 pound regional champion Jacob Milliman, and 132 pound regional champ Noah Paul.

Zachary Crandall finished second at 182 pounds. Jokiah Sewell and Chase Clark swapped weight classes with Sewell going down to 145 and Clark up to 152. Both advanced with third place medals.

There was just one win among the other five Hawk wrestlers. Adam Glendenning, 195, won his quarterfinal wrestleback, but dropped out in the next round.

Sam Flores-Minnis, 120, Jared Glendenning, 126, Austin Ebert, 160, and Daniel Dominguez, 170, all had their seasons end in the quarterfinal wrestlebacks.

Oregon moved ahead of Sterling Newman in the medal round to take fourth place with 121 points.

Le-Win-Stockton advances to the Dual Team Tournament, finishing first with 181 points. They send nine to the next level including two champions and two second places.

Dakota was second with 170.5 points and seven place winners including two first places.

West Carroll sent four to the championship mat, winning two and they were third with 131 points. Newman had 111 points and advances five

A surprising fourth seed with the second best record in the bracket and a number six ranking at 145, Clark had a bye and led 11-3 when he pinned Quentin Heilemeier of Dakota with a half nelson at 4:50.

He fed into top ranked Brody Ivey of Newman in the semifinal and lost two backpoints in the first period and a late reverse in the second. He was tough on top but couldn’t score in the third and he went down 6-0.

In the wrestleback semifinal, Clark had two three point cradles to take a 10-0 major decision. He met

Heilemeier again in the third place match, this time taking a 10-2 major decision. Clark has a 37-6 record.

Minnis drew fifth ranked and eventual champion Lucas Sutherland of Dakota in his opener and was taken down in a double leg and turned over the front in a half nelson in 38 seconds.

In the consolation quarterfinal, a nice switch for a reversal came too late to help as his season ended in a 7-4 loss.

Jared Glendenning faced tenth ranked and eventual third place finisher Marey Roby of Le-Win in the opening round and could not fight off a second half nelson and he I n was pinned in 42 seconds.

Against second place finisher Marcus McKenna of Polo in the first round, Ebert fought out of a chicken wing but was pinned in a half nelson at 2:59.

In his opener, Dominguez escaped from a half nelson but lost a takedown and another half nelson and he was pinned at 1:46.

In the consolation quarterfinal against Lane Lindquist of Polo,

Dominguez came back from a 6-4 second period deficit with two third period takedowns but he lost a reverse to his back and was pinned at 3:54.

In the opening round against eventual runner-up Martin Snyder of Dakota, Adam Glendenning lost three sets of backpoints before he was pinned in a half nelson at 4:40.

After a scoreless first period in the consolation semifinal, Glendenning stood for an escape to start the second and was tough on his feet and top the rest of the way to take a hard fought 1-0 win.

In the wrestleback semifinal, he was taken down in a high crotch and put in a cradle at 1:02.

“Like the boys too, it was a matter of missing a lot of easy spares,” Carlson said. “We have a lot of work to do in practice this week.”

Oregon will bowl this Saturday at Don Carter Lanes in the Rock-

ford sectional. Harlem, a national championship team, is a huge favorite, with Sycamore and South Elgin other teams to watch.

“After those three, the other three (team) slots are up for grabs,” Carlson said. “We’re capable of being one of the teams making it to state.”

The Oregon girls bowling teams imitated the Hawks’ boys team in claiming a sectional berth after coming behind on the sixth and final game .

Trailing DeKalb by 105 pins going into game six at the Sycamore regional ib Feb. 2, Oregon came up big and the Barbs faltered.

Behind the sophomore sister tandem of Rebbeca and Sammantha Meyers, Oregon bowled a 906 in that decisive game to the 780 put up by DeKalb on their home course of Mardi Gras Lanes.

That gave Oregon a 5,333 to 5,312 for DeKalb in a stunning reversal for the fourth and final sectional berth.

“It was almost exactly like the boys,” Oregon coach Eric Carlson said. “We knew we needed a strong game and a little help from DeKalb.”

The Barbs did their part by scoring 107 pins lower than any of the previous five games. Sammantha Myers had a 206 and Rebbeca a 200 to spark the Hawks in game six.

Rebbeca took third as an individual with a score of 1,249, with five scores 200 or better. Sammantha was eighth with an 1199.

“Rebbeca was solid all day and Sammantha was 103 pins better in the afternoon,” Carlson said. “All afternoon, they were fighting each other for the best game.”

Lady Hawks win regional opener The Lady Hawks breezed past the Lions 59-15 in the quarterfinals of the Winnebago 2A Regional on Monday.

Oregon led 16-4 after the first quarter, 40-11 at halftime, and 53-13 after three.

Olivia Lambrigtsen scored a game-high 13 points, while Jenae Bothe reached double figures with 11. Ella Martin drained three 3s for nine points.

The Hawks will battle regional host Winnebago in the semifinals on Feb. 6. The regional championship game is scheduled for Feb. 8.

Mendota 53, Oregon 40: The Hawks fell behind 29-11 by halftime in a Big Northern home loss to the Trojans on Feb. 2.

Olivia Lambrigtsen led the way with 14 points for Oregon, while Jenae Bothe added 10 points.

Alex Barrera scored a game-high 17 points for Mendota, and Amellia Bromenschenkel added 15 points.

Kewanee 57, Oregon 29: The Hawks couldn’t keep up with the Boilermakers in a nonconference road loss on Feb. 1.

Great crowd atmosphere present at two events I n terms of crowd atmosphere, it was a toss up Saturday between the gyms at Mt. Carroll for the 1A wrestling regional and at Forreston for the boys basketball game with Polo.

Other than running on the Joe Stengel Trail earlier in the day, those two gyms were where I spent the majority of my time on Saturday.

The fans at both places were into the action on the mats and courts big time and it was probably a welcome relief to see live sports after a week of hibernation from the weather.

How tough was the competition at the West Carroll 1A Wrestling Regional?

Other than 132 and 182 pounds, there was at least one top six stateranked wrestler at each weight class and in some cases more than one.

Chase Clark, of Oregon, was ranked No. 6 in the state at 145, but could only garner a No. 4 seed in the 152-pound weight class at the regional.

On top of that, there was a sub plot of Lena-Winslow/Stockton and Dakota fighting it out for the team

The last time someone other than those two schools won the regional was is 2011 and that is a bit misleading as they were in two separate regionals.

Contrast the WC regional with the one at Aurora, where the Aurora Christian team only lost one match the entire tournament. I know AC is good, but the rest of the competition was extremely mediocre to bad.

Most weight classes had five or less in them at Aurora. Next year, 1A wrestling enrollment will be raised from 647 to 788. That will be a positive in providing satisfactory competitions statewide.

A big change in this area might be Dixon (742 enrollment this year) dropping down to 1A. The Dukes just won a 2A regional and would really strengthen the 1A

sectional.

It was good to see Oregon wrestling making strides in regaining its prowess as one of the big dogs in the area.

Their three regional champs won in dominating fashion and they will be among the major players at a stacked Byron sectional.

Credit Strite for Effort Bowling doesn’t get as much publicity as basketball and wrestling in the winter, but credit needs to go to Austin Strite as he wrapped up his career at Oregon.

Bowling is quite stringent in handing out state medals, with only the top 12 making the cut. Contrast that with track that gives nine places for 18 different events and has three classes.

For Strite to finish close to the top50 downstate in a 1-class system two years in a row is very impressive.

Marcos vs. Cardinals Fun It was fun watching the Forreston and Polo go at it in boys basketball Saturday night and as Braiden

Soltow described it – “an awesome atmosphere.”

It’s also unique seeing kids from two different teams chatting with each in during the game.

What else would you expect from friends from nearby towns?

In looking over records that feed into the sub-sectionals, those two teams are the only ones with a decent record and should be runaway No. 1 and 2 seeds. The next best are probably Aquin and Dakota at about .500.

The other sub-sectional will have at least six teams approaching 20 wins. The worst team in that grouping, Orangeville at 4-15, beat Aquin last week.

Remember though, Aquin only lost to Polo 75-72 back in December.

Unless Aquin puts a winning streak together the remainder of the season, their 8-year streak of 20-win seasons will be over and Polo will take over supremacy on that.

If Polo can close out the regular season without a loss and win a regional, that will set a school record of 28 wins. A major roadblock is this Saturday against Milledgeville.

SPECIAL EVENT

The Oregon VFW, 1310 W. Washington St. (Ill. 64), Oregon, will celebrate Sweethearts Day on Saturday, Feb. 16 with an evening of food and entertainment.

A two-meat (ham and turkey) buffet will be available from 4 to 7 p.m. with all the fixings for $10 a person.

form from 7 to 10 p.m.

This band, which began in the 50s and 60s at places such as Castle Rock Lounge at the foot of Castle Rock on Ill. 2, started with Grobe and two brothers from Dixon, Dick and Harry Hackbarth.

Byron Forest Preserve is offering winter events Winter Night Hike – Saturday, Feb. 16 Byron Forest Preserve District Assistant Superintendent of Education, Janet Dahlberg will lead a winter night hike at the Jarrett Prairie Nature Preserve on Saturday, Feb. 16 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

“Experience the winter woods and prairie at night. This is a beautiful time of the year to be out in the dark and we will likely see owls, deer and maybe hear coyotes in the distance,” said Mark Herman, superintendent of recreation.

Participants should meet at the Jarrett Prairie Center located at 7993 North River Road in Byron. “Dress for the weather. We will warm up afterwards with hot chocolate,” said Herman.

Restoring Soil Habitats Lecture - Feb. 17 The Byron Forest Preserve District will be offering the second of

their free 2019 Winter Lecture Series on Sunday, Feb. 17 beginning at 2 p.m. at the Jarrett Prairie Center Museum located at 7993 North River Road in Byron.

The program is free and no advance registration is required.

Dr. Elizabeth Bach, The Nature Conservancy’s Nachusa Grasslands Ecosystem Restoration Scientist, will discuss the importance of understanding soil biodiversity.

People and the planet face several environmental challenges now and in the near future. Soil biodiversity is foundational to ecosystem services and functions. Soils help with carbon and nitrogen cycling, water filtering and storage, wildlife habitat, and climate change mitigation.

Yet, soil biodiversity is rarely considered explicitly in land management approaches to improve ecosystem functioning.

In her talk, Bach will share how soil micro-habitats and microbial communities contribute to ecosystem restoration in the tallgrass prairie region, and how that fits into the larger picture of sustaining nature for future generations.

Take a walk through prairies with Wild Ones

Quilt guild to meet Feb. 18

Take a break from winter and attend the Wild Ones meeting on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. at Rock Valley College in the Physical Education Center PEC0110 (lower level), 3301 N. Mulford Rd. Rockford.

John and Joyce Mori, who both hold PhDs, will take participants on a photographic walk through various prairies, revealing their beauty through close-up photography.

Both plants and their visiting insects will be featured. The emphasis is on the beauty, delicacy, and uniqueness found on prairies.

John has always been interested in nature and has been taking photos of natural subjects for 50 years.

While living near Peoria he and his wife Joyce became interested in prairies.

For three years they completed insect surveys on Illinois prairies for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources which included photography.

Upon moving to Rockford they were impressed by the quality and variety of prairies carefully maintained by the Winnebago County Forest Preserve District.

They began to explore prairies in northern and central Illinois and to use close-up photography to illustrate the beauty and wonder of these prairies.

Both John and Joyce take the photos, create the presentations, and present them to local nature groups.

The Country Crossroads Quilt Guild will offer a workshop on Monday, Feb.18 at 1 p.m. at the Forreston Grove Church, 7246 Freeport Rd., Forreston.

The workshop will be Summer Blooms, a cotton and wool project.

Participants will learn how to make flying geese, and wool applique.

Illinois Extension offers Winter Trails and Naturalist Tales Embrace winter’s beauty through outdoor exploration and indoor inspiration at Winter Trails and Naturalist Tales, a winter workshop for outdoor enthusiasts.

Weather spotter training Feb. 21

The Lee County Office of Emergency Management and Ogle County Emergency Management Agency will host a weather spotter training presented by the National Weather Service on Thursday, Feb. 21 at Sauk Valley Community College, 173 IL Rte. 2, Dixon in room 1K04.

The class begins at 6:30 p.m. and will last approximately an hour and a half.

Jan. 30 Meg Moorehead, 26, of Mt. Morris, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

She posted the $85 full cash bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail with no further court date needed.

Jan. 31 Andre Peat, 18, of Sterling, was arrested on an Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He was held in the Ogle

County Jail on a full cash bond of $1,941 pending a court appearance.

Brittany Grubbs, 24, of Rockford, was arrested on an Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. She was held in the Ogle County Jail on a full cash bond of $913 pending a court appearance.

Feb. 2 D.C. Hitchcock, 31, of Oregon, was arrested for aggravated battery to a senior citizen and domestic battery after deputies responded at 3:45 p.m. to a report of a domestic dispute at 5773 E.

Jill L. Carlson, 58, of Mt. Morris and formerly of Oregon, died suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019 while traveling in Puerto Rico.

She was born on March 17, 1960 in Dayton, Ohio, the daughter of Jimmy and Diane (Bechtold) Utley. Married to Timm Carlson April 10, 1981 in Oregon.

Jill was a 1978 graduate of Oregon High School and also a graduate of Rock Valley Community College.

She retired in December of 2016 from the Illinois Secretary of State Department of Motor Vehicles as the Oregon Facility Manager.

Jill was Mt. Morris Cub Scouts Committee Chairwoman, a member of the Mt. Morris Let Freedom Ring Committee, and a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Timm Carlson, of Mt. Morris; sons, Tyler

LaVere “Fuzz” Watson, 93, of Mt. Morris, died on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019 at KSB Hospital, Dixon.

LaVere was born on Aug. 29, 1925 to William and Eva (Newcomer) Watson in Forreston.

He graduated from Mt. Morris High School in the Class of 1942.

LaVere served in the U.S. Army and was a proud World War II veteran. LaVere married Mary Jane Carlson on July 31, 1955 in Grand Detour.

He was a farmer for most of his life and was a welder for Etnyre and Woods in Oregon for many years.

LaVere was an avid fisherman who

was always willing and enjoyed teaching others the joy of fishing.

He was an honest and just man who believed in the power of prayer and the grace of God. LaVere is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Watson; son, James (Peggy) Watson, of Mt. Morris; 8 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

LaVere is predeceased by his parents, one sister, and son, John.

No services are planned at this time.

Cremation rites have been accorded with Finch Funeral Home, 405 E. Hitt St., Mt. Morris.

She was born on July 7, 1925 the daughter of Leland and Cardine Anna (Kappenman) Kendel.

Vera graduated from Rochelle High School in 1942.

She married Willis A. Davison on Dec. 10, 1950 in Mt. Morris. He preceded her in death in 2001.

Vera was a former member of the Chana United Methodist Church.

She liked to knit, crochet, and do puzzles. Her favorite snack was Cheetos.

She loved to play bingo and when she won she would share her prizes with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
