The Sauk Board approved rehiring alumnus Jon Mandrell for the position Monday. He served in the role for four years and left in 2018 to become president of Tennessee College of Applied Technology in Murfreesboro.

After about a year, he left the college and became chief of the Polo Police Department, replacing former Chief Kurt Cavanaugh, who stepped down May 20.

Plan for streets around new jail detailed Corcoran presents new petition against change for Oregon Coliseum

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Ogle County Engineer Jeremy Ciesiel gave a report to the Oregon City Council on Tuesday detailing the plans for street work to be done around the new Ogle County Jail as construction progresses.

When the 100 block of South Sixth Street came under county jurisdiction, it was negotiated that improvements would be made to the streets and new jail along Jefferson Street from Illinois 2 west to Sixth Street and Fifth Street south to Jefferson.

Those three blocks will be completely repaved and new curb and gutter will be installed, Ciesiel said. The majority of sidewalks will be replaced as well.

Plans are set to start in March, but since Jefferson Street is often used for transportation to and from the Oregon school campus, that construction will not start until the school year has ended.

Construction on Fifth Street could start earlier.

Completion of the improvements are slated to be done by the first week of

September in order to be out of the way before Autumn on Parade festivities begin. Ciesiel also said he’s taken the three churches in the area into consideration.

“We’ve already had multiple conversations with the churches,” Ciesiel said.

“At Jefferson and Fifth there are churches at every corner almost. When we’re doing the sidewalk, curb and gutter we’ll be sure to stage that so that they always have access to the church, regardless of which it is.”

Coliseum Petition Chris Corcoran spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting and said he has started a petition against leasing the Oregon Coliseum to a local nonprofit group that wants to turn it into a museum.

Officials from the Coliseum Museum of Arts, Antiquities and Americana will be in attendance to give a presentation and answer questions on Feb. 5 at 5:30 p.m. at the Coliseum for a special meeting that is being hosted by the Oregon City Council.

A vote will likely take place at the council meeting on Feb. 11 on whether or not to lease the Coliseum to CMAAA in a 49-year, renewable lease that see the city essentially acting as landlords to CMAAA. The lease includes the first and second floors of the Coliseum for $1

per year.

Corcoran is a Mt. Morris resident, but recalls spending time at the Coliseum in his youth.

“If you turn that into a museum, you’re taking away the history,” Corcoran said.

“One dollar a year is crazy. And you’re going to tie it up for 49 years.”

Corcoran plans to circulate his petition ahead of the meeting by going downtown and door-to-door. He plans to canvas the entire town.

The Coliseum is currently used for various public events and needs.

“It should be put up to a referendum,” Corcoran said. “Everybody pays taxes on that building. Us paying the bills on it and the museum having it is ridiculous.

This building needs remain with the community. We pay for it.”

Alcohol at Northside BarbaQ The council unanimously approved a liquor license for Northside BarbaQ at the meeting.

The license is for beer and wine only, seven days a week.

There will be no slot machines added at the business. Oregon Mayor Ken Williams noted this could assist Northside BarbaQ if it wanted to serve alcohol in other locations around town while catering, as liquor licenses apply anywhere for those that have them within the city.

Organization works with visually impaired

DuChesne’s orientational mobility training included a full-scale replica of a street with cars as well as training out in the real world.

She learned how to incorporate the sounds she hears into getting around. She learned how to use her cane, which takes extensive training. Only seven percent of blind people use canes, she said.

At the end of DuChesne’s training, she was challenged by walking her training route blindfolded. Duchesne, who still has partial vision, thought that would be impossible at the beginning of the week. But she did it. Her abilities will only improve when she gets a dog.

“The biggest thing about a dog is safety,” Duchesne said. “I might make the decision to cross the street. If there’s a car coming, the dog wouldn’t allow me to go. That’s called intelligent disobedience.”

DuChesne had vision problems growing up and underwent multiple surgeries. Seven or eight years ago, she ran a red light with her daughter in the car and realized she couldn’t tell the difference between red and green. She gave up her keys for good.

A seeing eye dog will help DuChesne accomplish some of her goals.

She’d like to hike again. She’d like to return to school and be able to walk across a college campus. Her dream career is to be a rehabilitation counselor, helping people with limits like her to live the lives that they want to.

“I don’t have a lot of my vision left,” DuChesne said. “I will lose more. I’m OK with that because it

doesn’t define me. It’s an inconvenience, but because of the skill set I’ve learned, I’m still who I am.”

Julie DuChesne hasn’t been able to go hiking since her vision deteriorated into blindness.

Thanks to Leader Dog, the Byron resident is on track to be able to do it again.

DuChesne was in attendance last week as Oregon’s Lions Club presented a $2,000 donation to Leader Dog, an organization the national club has worked with since 1939 that empowers people who are blind or visually-impaired with lifelong skills for independent travel.

DuChesne will be getting a seeing eye dog in the future and recently took Leader Dog’s orientational mobility training.

“When I’m walking around Byron I know Walnut Street,” DuChesne said. “I know Second Avenue, Route 2. That’s where Leader Dog came in is getting a grid in my head. If I can do that, I can go anywhere.”

Leader Dog provides services to those in need free of charge. Much of Leader Dog’s funding comes from donations from Lions chapters like Oregon’s. DuChesne got her cane from the organization. It’s made of graphite and has interchangeable tips that make vibrations that help her know what type of surface she’s on.

Getting help from the state is tough for the visually impaired, DuChesne said. It took her two years to get help. After her training with Leader Dog, she can now walk around more than downtown Byron and goes for two-hour workouts during her week.

“I can get on a bus,” DuChesne said. “I can go anywhere in these counties and know that I can get off and navigate a building.”

Many of Oregon’s Lions Club members have taken bus trips to Leader Dog’s facility in Detroit. The club donates at least $1,000 to the organization each year. The main objective of the Lions Club is to help the hearing and vision-impaired.

Mary Nelson, a member of the Rockford Noon Lions, was also in attendance at the meeting as a guest speaker. She and her husband, Dennis have raised puppies over the years for Leader Dog that later become seeing eye dogs.

“People always ask us how we can give the dogs back,” Mary Nelson said. “To be a part of that, how can

February Finds antique event enters eighth year

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Growing up, John Kessinger spent time with his grandmother, who was born in 1898.

She would share many stories of “the old days” and was a collector of many antique items. As she shared the stories behind the objects, Kessinger’s interest in the history that surrounded antiques grew.

Fast forward to now, the Polo resident is preparing to attend the annual February Finds Antique and Collectibles Market on Feb. 1 in Mt. Morris.

The event is in its eighth year, and is organized

by Mt. Morris resident Eden White.

“Eight years ago I threw it together in one month,” White said. “Everyone wants to get out in the month of February. We wanted to have something this time of year to get rid of things.”

The market is a fund-raising event this year for the Mt. Morris Moose Lodge Family Center #1551, where it is held. It will be open Saturday, Feb. 1 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 20 dealers have reserved booths, filling the market to capacity.

“Everybody has something different,” White said. “No two booths are alike.”

White said the turnout is usually “overwhelming” and brought out hundreds even in its first year and a year when there was a blizzard. The event expanded to two rooms after a couple years.

“It’s the perfect time of the year,” Kessinger said. “People have cabin fever.”

Kessinger and his wife, Theresa specialize in primitive country antiques from the 1800s.

Among the items he’ll be bringing is called a Firkin. A Firkin is a unit of measure, but over time it became a generic name for the wooden staved buckets with lids.

the “Tupperware of the 19th century.” People often collect the various sizes and stack them.

Firkins in original paint are highly-sought after.

Kessinger also plans to bring an 1800s foot warmer. The pierced-tin and wood-framed box used heated coals inside in a small tray. The box could then be set near one’s feet in a cold carriage ride or taken to church placed near the feet to keep someone warm during long winter services.

“I bought a kerosene lantern last fall at a flea market for $40 and a guy immediately contacted me and offered $400 for it,” Kessinger said. “You just never know.”

White has lived in Mt. Morris all her life. She knew when she started the event that there were different organizations that need help in the area.

Since its inception, proceeds from the event have been donated to the Mt. Morris Fire Department, Loaves & Fish food pantry, Serenity Hospice and Home, the women’s PEO and the Let Freedom Ring Festival.

Admittance to the event is $3 per person. Children 12 and under will be admitted free. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Parking is free and the building is handicap-accessible.

A bake sale will be held in conjunction with the market. Food and beverages prepared by the Moose will be available for purchase. No food or drinks will be allowed in the designated market area. The address of the event is 485 East Hitt St.

New riverside park is expected to be done by the fall of 2021

“There won’t be athletic fields or scheduled programming,” Byron Park District Executive Director Paul Zepezauer said. “We could do some movies or concerts in the park potentially, but it’s more of a neighborhood park and an area for natural space.”

The park district utilizes smaller parcels of land in Byron, due to the large forest preserves on the other side of the river. The Kathryn A. Hamas Memorial Park is on riverfront property on the other side of the Illinois 72 bridge, but is just 2.5 acres.

The goal of the park is to serve the neighborhood around it, Zepezauer said. The bulk of park use comes from those that live around them.

The residents south of Illinois 2 are the targeted demographic the BPD wants to serve.

“You want it to be walkable and you want to be comfortable sending your kids to the parks,” Zepezauer said. “Route 2 for us is that dividing line, most parents don’t want to send their kids across it.”

Fehr-Graham has been hired by the BPD to serve as the engineer and architect of the project. The civil engineering and environmental planning company has worked with the park district for years since planning began and helped with grant

applications.

Tree removal has already begun on the park site and will continue until construction starts. The park is in a natural floodway, hence why it won’t house sports fields or anything else that could be damaged by

The Byron Park District has been awarded $400,000 in grant money for a new riverfront park.

The grant, approved Jan. 17, is funded through the state’s Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) program and administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR).

The site of the park will be in southwest Byron near River Drive, where the park district purchased 10 acres of land last January.

“The district has been waiting for the project to begin to take shape and we are excited to move into the next phase of development,” Byron Park District Board President Rachel Oracki said. “It is an honor to be selected and this is an exciting time for the district and community.”

The total estimated cost of the project is $923,385. After the grant, the remainder will be covered by the district’s capital improvement fund.

A total of 85 projects were selected to receive grants like Byron’s, totaling $29.7 million in grants to help communities acquire open space and develop and improve recreational facilities throughout Illinois. Half of the $90,000 cost of the land purchased was covered by a grant as well.

The park district bought the land from the Johnson family, who stipulated that it be named The Donald B. Johnson Riverfront Park, after the family’s late grandfather. Construction at the park is tentatively set to begin in the spring of 2021 and to be completed by the fall of 2021.

Parking lots, a playground, a small shelter, a combination of hard surface trails, fishing areas and a riverwalk trail are in the plans to be added. Rock will be brought in to stabilize the shoreline. Trees and plantings will be done. Mostly, the park will be open grass space.

“If we have a really bad summer and this is underwater for a long period of time, all that grass is going to die,” Zepezauer said. “Well, it’s OK because we’re not trying to run soccer games or baseball games or anything there. We can afford the time for that to just grow back naturally. It’s designed to be in that floodway.”

Some of the BPD’s board members grew up in the area of the land and used it to fish and to play. Now they’ll get to see it as an official park, maintained and with safer features like fishing rails for those that are younger.

“It started with an idea of, ‘Let’s take a piece of land that the neighborhood has been using and make it better,’” Zepezauer said.

While it’s designed for the neighborhood, the two parking lots planned for the park show that it will be a destination for all of Byron and the surrounding area.

“We couldn’t have done it without the grant,” Zepezauer said. “It’s tough to justify it at those numbers without it.”

Many inventions, discoveries in Hardesty’s life Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

by Robert Ordnung Hardesty who was born in Oregon and attended schools in Oregon including the Oregon Bible College.

Robert’s parents, William and Ida, lived at 100 S. 10th St. in Oregon on a 10-acre truck farm. After graduation from Oregon Bible College in June 1944, Robert accepted an invitation to become pastor of the Church of God in Omaha, Nebraska.

As I have just passed my 94th birthday I am aware that, in the space of my lifetime, many inventions and discoveries have been made for greater ease and comfort in the lives of present and future generations.

Zippers replaced buckles on overshoes and are more convenient than buttons on many garments.

Nylon became the choice for ladies dress hosiery. A pre-shrinking process called Sanforizing was introduced into the garment industry to pre-shrink cotton cloth before it is made into items of clothing.

Various types of plastic were introduced. Other products were Velcro, home air conditioners, the Global Positioning System, personal computers, cell phones and much more.

Atomic energy was put to use in bombs and in the production of electricity. Space exploration was begun in the sending of men to the moon.

Dear Mother, I am so sorry I never appreciated the grief you surely must have felt when my father, your husband, left you at his death 81 years ago this month; or the responsibility thrust so suddenly upon your shoulders; or the load of keeping what was left of our family together.

I love you more than I ever did before. Still, how could a nine-year-boy understand the feelings of a young wife and mother whose world had collapsed?

You stood strong and courageous. You assumed the responsibility, not only of mother and housekeeper, but also that of managing the little farm that you and my father had hoped would be a means of supplying food for our family and a place where Harold and I could learn the value of responsibility and hard work.

I salute you. I commend you. I appreciate you.

I’ll never forget the Christmas I received my Bonnie-Braids doll. You ordered it through the mail. It did not arrive in time for Christmas morning. But the day it did arrive, you brought it to me at school. You walked to school in January winter weather.

You endured my love of the song “Shrimp Boats”. I never tired of “Shrimp Boats is a comin”.

I’d turn up the volume as high as it would go and play it dozens of times until you would say the neighbors had had enough Shrimp Boats and please play something else.

I knew all along it was you who had had enough.

Whatever happened to that record anyway?

Thank you for making me responsible.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten The library now offers this nationwide pre-kindergarten challenge to its’ district patrons.

How does this work? Come to the Oregon Public Library, register, receive your reading folder & instructions and off you go! Seems impossible?

The objective of the 1000 Books Foundation (a non- profit public charity based in Nevada) is to promote reading to newborns, infants, and toddlers and to encourage parent and child bonding through reading.

Numerous studies estimate that as many as one in five children have difficulties learning to read. Reading has been associated as an early indicator of academic success.

SPECIAL PROGRAM

Frozen meals are Ag in the Classroom fundraiser Ogle County residents searching for a way to make dinner preparation simple and help a local organization teach kids about agriculture don’t have to look any further than the Ag in the Classroom fundraiser.

Ten delicious meals have been prepared and frozen for convenience.

Each meal serves three to five people. The meals are: Hickory Smoked Pulled Pork, Smoked Pork Chops with dressing, Beef Taco Bake, Baked Mostaccioli, Cheesy Ham & Potato Casserole, Southwest Chicken Burrito Bowl, Creamy Crack Chicken, Sweet and Sour Meatballs, Honey Garlic Chicken, and Breakfast Burritos.

The cost for the 10 meals is $160 (as low as $3.20 per person per serving).

Proceeds will benefit the Ogle-Carroll Ag in the Classroom Program.

Orders are due by Monday, March Meals can be picked up on March 18.

He received his second Masters in Public Administration on Dec. 14, 2019 from Texas A&M University in Corpus Christi.

Schwartz is a 1990 graduate of Polo Community High School. He and his wife, Stacey, live in Corpus Christi, Texas. He works for the City of Corpus Christi as a branch manager of

“We will be looking for sign of animal tracks, chews and scat in the preserve’s prairies and woodland and see if the local groundhogs have ventured out of their dens,” said Herman.

Preserve’s lecture series to offer a variety of topics The Byron Forest Preserve District’s annual Winter Lecture Series will be held on Sunday afternoons beginning at 2 p.m. from Feb. 9 through March 8 at the Jarrett Prairie Center, located at 7993 North River Road, near Byron.

These programs are free and no advance registration is required.

The lecture program is co-sponsored by Exelon Generation Byron Station and the award winning Jarrett Prairie Center Museum.

Feb. 9 – Short-eared Owls: Ghosts in the Grass Join Jacques Nuzzo, Program Director for the Illinois Raptor Center in Decatur to understand the history of short-eared owls.

These ground-nesting owls once thrived in our open prairie grasslands and are now an Illinois state-endangered species.

Feb. 16 – Bobcat: Illinois’ Native Cat Jennifer Kuroda, founder of the Illinois Bobcat Foundation, will cover every facet of these elu-

sive cats. Once hunted almost to extinction in the Midwest, bobcats have been making a comeback in recent years.

Feb. 23 – The Search for the Rusty Patched Bumble Bee: How a Team of Researchers Scientifically Established a Species’ Decline Isaac Stewart, Instructor of Biology at Black Hawk College, will discuss how the work of a dedicated group of researchers put the rusty patched bumble bee on the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Endangered Species List in January 2017.

This was the first bee species from the centennial United States that has ever been added to this list.

This study’s findings is a red flag warning for other pollinator species in the Midwest.

March 1 – Life through the Lens of Kodak: The History of Personal Photography Chicago actor R. J. Lindsey will portray George

Eastman, found of Kodak. He will present a slide program and display vintage cameras to tell how Kodak’s affordable and easy to use cameras changed personal photography around the world.

March 8 – The History and Archaeology of the Sauk Nation and Black Hawk Join Ferrel Anderson, President of the Quad Cities Archaeological Society, to learn about the archaeological findings regarding the people of the Sauk Nation and Black Hawk.

Using historical records and archaeological evidence, Anderson located Black Hawk’s Saukenuk village, 800 acres of Sauk and Fox agricultural fields and several grave yards at the mouth of the Rock River near the present day Quad Cities.

Woolsey started for the Hawks, but struggled with erratic shooting and out-of-control drives to the basket in the early going. He still finished with a game-high 21 points.

Boys Bowling Kaltenbrun advances to state: Oregon’s Isaac Kaltenbrun was the lone area state qualifier from the Sycamore Sectional contested at Mardi Gras Lanes in DeKalb.

Kaltenbrun rolled games of 238, 212 and 189 for a 639 morning series. He followed that up with 224, 222 and 225 for a 671 in the afternoon. His 1,310 total was 15th overall.

Oregon was ninth as a team with a 5,954 total. The six advancing teams were Vernon Hills (6,450), Hononegah (6,443), Harlem (6,399), St. Charles East (6,337), Belvidere (6,203) and Sycamore (6,161).

After starting the year 7-0 and even picking up a couple of votes in the initial 2A poll, Oregon basketball team has gone into a severe tailspin, losing 10 of its next 13 games.

To compound matters, top defender Josh Sitze is out with a broken foot and leading scorer Trey Woolsey is not yet 100 percent because of a sprained ankle suffered at Warren last week.

“We just don’t have enough bodies,” Oregon coach Quinn Virgil said. “Losing Josh really hurts because of the pressure he exerts out front on defense and his offensive rebounding. Until we get everyone back, we lack cohesiveness.”

Hoping to get a much-needed win in Big Northern play against 5-13 Byron, the Hawks did just that with a 57-28 blowout on Jan. 24.

Ryker Finch, who recently announced he will be following his brother to play football at St. Gustavus (Minnesota), got the team off to a 13-9 first-quarter lead with eight straight points. Riley Birnbaum really amped the crowd up with a 3-pointer to start the second quarter and Oregon never looked back.

“What I saw out there was a lot a energy,” Virgil said. “If we continue to play like this, we’re going to be pretty good. Ryker really did well defensively fronting up too and I like what Riley showed us out there.”

Taking a 20-5 rebounding edge, the Hawks grabbed a 27-14 first-half lead.

“They’re a senior heavy group and we’re junior heavy,” Byron coach Matt Huels said. “When teams are physical with us, it’s tough to compete.”

Oregon only allowed one second-chance shot attempt the entire game by Byron, in ending with a 37-14 board advantage. Virgil loved the defensive pressure just as much, forcing the Tigers into three turnovers and five missed shots at the beginning of the third quarter.

“We played really well on defense with moxie,” Virgil said. “When people went to the basket, we talked and helped out.”

Keshon Reed scored off his third takeaway and Noah Campos hit a 3 in the third quarter, as Oregon increased the lead to 45-24.

“Keeshon had great minutes for us off the bench. So did (Owen) Ketter,” Virgil said.

Eli Rufer and Brinbaum both added a pair of baskets in the fourth quarter, as Oregon did not let off on the gas pedal.

“The blew up a lot of our things the way they guarded us,” said Huels, in his first year replacing long-time Tiger mentor Tom Schmidt.

The Hawks have a big test this Saturday at home against Rock Falls.

Sitze is hopeful to be back shortly after that game, perhaps in time for the Benton Shootout.

Hawks take fourth

The Oregon wrestlers finished fourth Jan. 25 at the Randy Bowman Invitational Tournament in Leroy.

The Hawks garnered eight medals, the most of any team in the tournament, but Oregon sent only one wrestler to the first place mat.

Champions of their own tournament, Leroy had four first places and one fifth and 156 points. The Hawks finished with 125 points 5.5 ahead of Oakwood.

Jokiah Sewell was second at 160 pounds. Seth Stevens at 126 and Jonathon Alaniz at 195 finished third.

In the championship match against second ranked Ty Baxter of Leroy, Sewell was almost pinned in a cradle at the first period buzzer and spent the second on his feet trailing 8-1.

He rode out the third and picked up a couple of stalling points but could not get a turn in an 8-3 loss.

Sammy Flores-Minnis at 120 and Braydon Altherr at 138 were fourth, and Gabe Eckerd, 145, Adam Glendenning, 182, and Even Flaharty at 285 all finished fifth.

Oregon went three for four in the opening round with the rest of the wrestlers receiving byes.

Basketball seasons are hitting the final stretch A

fter going into the tank for the last month or so, the Oregon boys basketball team looks to have righted the ship with a resounding win over Byron.

Additionally, the schedule lightens up significantly.

It is entirely possible the Hawks could win their remaining regular-season contests, especially after getting Josh Sitze back to the line-up.

They looked solid on defense without him against Byron, tenaciously playing defense.

Admittedly, Byron doesn’t have any size or talent this year, but to double the score on them was impressive.

Do look for Byron to improve in the future with new coach Matt Huels, who replaced a class act in Tom Schmidt.

Looking ahead to the regional, Winnebago will be the top seed. That should be Oregon’s No. 1 focus – what they could possibly do to reverse a 91-67 thumping?

Oregon played well early, eventually succumbing to the Indians playing more consistently. The potential is there for the Hawks to win, but much will depend on the team’s mental toughness.

From watching the Byron game, I would suggest reining Trey Woolsey in more. I like his demeanor on the court and the excitement he brings, but there are too many ill-advised longrange shots and drives to the hoop.

Sure, his style is more of the high-octane variety. However, that can be a recipe for turnovers, as was the case against Byron.

It was good to see Riley Birnbaum assert himself more and there is plenty of potential for even bigger things. Eli Rufer quietly gets the job done, getting more out of his talent than anyone out there.

Noah Campos is a smart player who is a nice role player. Add in Ryker Finch for his versatility

and physicality and Keshon Reed for defensive tenacity and the Hawks are certainly capable of playing with anyone, something coach Quinn Virgil promised at the beginning of the year.

Lary Marcos Compete The other game I saw last week was Riverdale vs Polo in girls basketball. One thing about living alone is having more latitude in going and doing. So why not go to Polo on Saturday night I thought.

A brutal stretch for Polo with Amboy, Riverdale and Eastland all in a row. The Marcos didn’t back down. They gave Riverdale all they could handle. In fact, the Riverdale coach felt Polo outplayed his team.

The only thing that prevented Polo from coming up with that signature win was turnovers. As long as I’ve been watching them, that’s been their nemesis.

The girls are well schooled on finding the open shooter and in a humble sense, that becomes their first priority. Unfortunately, well-intended passes are thrown into traffic and are pilfered or bounced out of bounds.

This may sound radical, and not just for Polo, but for many girls teams I see, but points per possession may improve by shooting earlier rather than later. The longer a team holds on to ball, the

greater the likelihood for turnovers.

Not only do Polo and Forreston have to contend with the state’s No. 1 Amboy and No. 4 Eastland in NUIC division play, but in the sub-sectional complex as well.

The No. 2 and 3 teams in 1A, Lewistown and Brimfield are also geographically close and in the same sectional. And like Amboy and Eastland, they recently play one another, with Lewistown winning big.

Based upon its first two games, Amboy and Eastland are much closer. Though Amboy won both, look for Eastland to have an advantage should the two square off in the sectional final.

The old adage about beating a team three times often rings true because of the law of averages.

Eastland will also come in with more experience of playing high stakes ball.

There is huge, huge difference when it comes to nerves at a sectional final versus a regular season bout. Certainly, Amboy will be the sentimental favorite with long-time coach Mike McCracken and the fact Eastland has already had plenty of state title appearances in a variety of girls sports.

Congratulations to Oregon sophomore Isaac Kaltenbrun for qualifying for the IHSA bowling tournament in what is traditionally the toughest sectional in the state. Kaltenbrun joins his sister Caitlyn (2017) as a state qualifier for the Hawk bowling program.

It also continues a 3-year streak of a boys qualifier, with Austin Strite making the cut the last two years. As a team, Oregon only finished about 200 pins away from qualifying. Maybe in another sectional, they would have made it.

We have yet to talk about wrestling this winter, so next week will be devoted to the grapplers in anticipation of what promises to be the toughest 1A regional in the state at Polo. It might even be tougher than some sectionals.

Oregon bowler Isaac Kaltenbrun is eyeing the state tournament this weekend.

There was a practice about three weeks ago, Kaltenbrun noted, when the proverbial light finally came on. A shorter backswing, coupled with a straighter ball, were indeed the way to go.

“It just started feeling more natural,” Kaltenbrun said.

The breakthrough came at the Oregon Regional, where Kaltenbrun tied for fourth overall, with teammate Eddie Buttens, with a total pinfall of 1,216 over six games.

“It was harder than what I thought because there was a lot more oil there, which meant I had to move a lot further right than what I was com-

BY RANDY HOLLAND The Hawk wrestlers traveled to Winnebago for dual meets with the Indians and the Amboy Clippers on Jan. 23 and rolled over Amboy 66-12 but came up short against ‘Bago 43-36.

Oregon won four by forfeit and had six pins in the opener against the Clippers, losing one by a fall and one by forfeit.

The Hawks had their chance against Winnebago but gave avoidable pins and didn’t get wins when they could.

Wrestling against Amboy started at 106 like the old days with Grant Stender on the mat.

He had two takedowns before he hooked up a crook at 1:08. Oregon forfeited 113 and 120 and 126 were

double forfeits brining up Seth Stevens at 132, running a chicken wing at 1:32.

Braydon Altherr took a forfeit at 138 and Gabe Eckerd just missed the back on a reversal before he pulled a wing back at 2:37.

Sebastian Cardenas hooked up a half nelson on the way down to pin in 27 seconds.

Jokiah Sewell and Wayde Reimer took forfeits brining up Adam Glendenning at 182. He was scoreless after the first and stopped a stand up and connected a half nelson at 3:39.

Jonathan Alaniz took a forfeit bringing up Miguel Vasquez at 220 who was on his back at the first period buzzer and went over in a chicken wing at 3:48.

The meet ended with Evan Flaharty, down 10-2 fighting a throw and getting a take-

down to the back at 5:18.

The Hawks forfeited to start the Winnebago meet and in the first action, Stevens went down in a high crotch and was pinned in a spladle by seventh ranked Carlos Sanchez. At 132, Emmett Peterson was turned in a guillotine in the second before he was pinned in a cradle at 4:30.

Altherr lost two backpoints in the second and three more in a butcher in the third.

He managed a couple of reversals but went down to a 14-6 major decision.

Down 22-0, Oregon needed points, but they were still a match away.

Eckerd lost a hard fought takedown and then was caught on his back trying to escape and he was pinned at 1:37 in the 145 pound match.

Cardenas got Oregon on the board

when he switched into a half nelson at the start of the second and pinned at 2:37.

Sewell drew fourth ranked Bryce Faworski and got countered with heel picks in the first and second periods as he tried to go single to double. In the third Sewell got taken to his back for three points and then was turned with a chicken wing and pinned at 5:09.

Reimer got the points back with a counter for a takedown and a butcher in 58 seconds.

Trailing 34-18 with six matches left and four forfeits coming up, Oregon could still come out on top. A win at 182 would help.

Glendenning came close, down 4-2 with a minute left, but his throw attempt was countered, and he went to his back and was pinned at 5:46.

Sometimes it takes a while for the light to come on when it comes to an athlete performing at his or her best.

For Oregon sophomore Isaac Kaltenbrun, it’s been a gradual process, but that light is shining very bright now. It’s led him to a somewhat surprising berth at the IHSA boys state bowling tournament that begins this Friday at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon.

Kaltenbrun was the lone area athlete to advance from the Sycamore Sectional, held Jan. 25 at Mardi Gras Lanes in DeKalb. That came on the heels of a fourth-place finish at the Oregon Regional on Jan. 18 at Plum Hollow Lanes in Dixon.

“The regionals, he kind of shocked us, finishing fourth,” Oregon coach Eric Carlson said. “He’s got the capabilities, but the last two weeks, when it really mattered, he’s stepped up and thrown the ball the way it needs to be thrown, where it needs to be thrown, and been able to play a multitude of different lines that allowed him to get there.”

Carlson’s coaching of Kaltenbrun has been a work in progress. As a freshman, Kaltenbrun preferred to throw a ball that hooked violently at the end. It led to some inconsistent performances, and his average for the season was 178.

In the offseason, Carlson instructed Kaltenbrun to work on rolling a straighter ball, that hooked less but would hopefully find the pocket more. Kaltenbrun bowled about twice a week during the summer at Town & Country Lanes in

At the Sycamore Sectional, Kaltenbrun took his game up another notch. He opened with a 238 game, which settled him down.

“There were a lot of nerves,” he said. “It’s a sectional, and it’s always one of the hardest sectionals in the state.”

Kaltenbrun completed his morning with games of 212 and 189 for a 639 series, then was a picture of consistency in the afternoon. He rolled games of 224, 222 and 225 for a 671 series, and a total pinfall of 1,310. He averaged 218.3 on the day, more than 17 pins per game above his average this season.

Now Kaltenbrun has the opportunity to see how he stacks up against the state’s best, like an older sister, Caitlyn, did in the winter of 2017 as a state qualifier as a junior at Oregon.

Isaac is slated for a practice session at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon on the afternoon of Thursday, Jan. 30, then will take to the lanes for real on Friday morning.

Kaltenbrun is hoping for a 1,275 six-game total, which will give him a fighting chance to make the first-day cut that includes 12 teams and 30 individuals. A year ago, that qualifying number fell at 1,200.

A former teammate, the graduated Austin Strite, made the cut last year with a 1,237 firstday total. He wound up tied for 52nd with a 2,432 12-game score.

For Carlson, it’s a matter of Kaltenbrun continuing to do what got him to this point.

“If he executes the way he has the last couple of weeks and doesn’t start trying to get back into that cranking mode, he’s got the ability to compete,” Carlson said. “Hopefully he makes Day 2.

It’s a whole different environment down there.”

OBITUARIES David Lee Bull, 60, of Cincinnati, Ohio and formerly of Ogle County, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his beloved daughter and son-in-law, at The Christ Hospital on January 21, 2020 after suffering a heart attack.

Lois P. Funk, 93, of Lombard and formerly of Dixon died peacefully Saturday, Jan. 25, 2020.

She was born Aug. 5, 1926 in Elmhurst the daughter of Bernard and Phyllis (Vering) Klose.

Lois married Robert J. Funk on May 31, 1947 at St Liborius Catholic Church in Steger.

He preceded her in death Oct. 5, 2009. She was also preceded in death by her parents, brother Ted Klose and son in law Dave Churney.

He also enjoyed riding his Harley and fishing, whether it be on a pond or Lake Erie.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends for his sense of humor and contagious laughter.

Dave gave generously during his life and after. Prior to Dave’s cremation he was a donor and able to help around 100 people.

Dave was predeceased by his granddaughter April, niece Monica Zellers, and his grandparents.

• OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Continued from Page 17 Jan. 24 Isaiah Holmes, 21, of Houston, Texas, was arrested at 2:02 p.m. for not having a valid driver’s license and issued citations for improper display of registration and expired registration following a traffic stop in the 1000 block of North Freeport Road. Holmes was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

At 8:28 p.m., Ogle County Sheriff’s deputies along with Ashton EMS responded to the 7000 block of East

Flagg Road for a single vehicle crash with injuries.

After an investigation, it was determined that Sarah Stoecker, 23, of Chillicothe, had lost control of her Ford SUV while driving westbound on Flagg Road causing her vehicle to travel into the south ditch striking a utility pole. All five occupants were checked by Ashton EMS and refused treatment.

Travis House, 23, of Chillicothe, was the front seat passenger of the vehicle and was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. House was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of

bond.

Jan. 26 At 9:27 p.m., Ogle County Sheriff’s deputies, along with Stillman Valley EMS, responded to the intersection of East Macklin Road and North Stillman Road for a single vehicle rollover crash.

After an investigation, it was determined Beth Sawyer, 46, of Holcomb, was attempting to turn southbound onto North Stillman Road from East Macklin Road. Sawyer did not successfully complete the turn and crashed her vehicle into the south ditch, causing her vehicle to turn onto it’s driver’s side.

Sawyer was checked by Stillman Val-

ley EMS and refused to be transported.

Sawyer was then placed under arrest for driving while under the influence of alcohol and transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond.

Rochelle teenager is killed in DeKalb shooting

Jacob Zamora, 18, of Rochelle, died from multiple gunshot wounds at Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital on Jan. 24 after he was shot at an apartment complex at 835 Edgebrook Drive the night before, said DeKalb County Coroner Denny Miller.

Upon arrival, officers found Zamora suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in a hallway of the 835 Edgebrook Drive apartment complex.

Zamora was treated by DeKalb police until DeKalb Fire Department paramedics arrived. The paramedics took him to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital where he later died from his wounds.

STATE’S ATTORNEY Ogle County State’s Attorney Eric Morrow reports the following court activity.

Joshua D. Schier, 43, Polo, pleaded guilty on Jan. 24 to aggravated domestic battery, a class 4 felony. He was sentenced to serve 82 days imprisonment and 18 months probation.

He must cooperate and satisfactorily

complete a domestic violence intervention program, submit to random drug testing; cooperate and satisfactorily complete psychological or substance abuse assessments or treatment as recommended. He must pay total fines and costs of $1,425.00. A charge of theft was dismissed pursuant to Schier’s guilty plea, and $80 restitution was included in the plea.
