Illinois Department of Natural Resources landscape architect George Bellovics will head up a meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 15 to brainstorm with the community about how to redesign the plaza around the statue.

The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at

Nash Recreation Center, Oregon.

“Now that the money is lined up and the contracts are signed [to repair the statue itself], we are looking at the area around it,” Bellovics said. “Since the community has been so involved in the process, we wanted to engage them in planning for the plaza.”

He said those who attend the meeting will be divided into groups, and each group will come up with a design.

“It’s a great way to involve the community. I’m trying to keep it as open and

The Oregon City Council clarified and approved a policy Monday evening for elected officials.

Mayor Ken Williams said the policy has been in place for several years but not all commissioners were aware of its provisions.

The policy stipulates that the commissioners and mayor get paid $25 for each city meeting they attend, including the Planning Commission and Economic Community Development Committee.

It also allows the commissioners and mayor to get the same health insurance coverage that employees are entitled to, except that the elected officials will have to pay 100 percent of the premiums.

The only controversy arose over the provision that allows the elected officials to be reimbursed $40 per month if they use their personal cell phones for city business.

The policy requires that the reimbursement claims must be filed during the same calendar year when they were incurred.

However, because some commissioners were unaware of the phone reimbursement, Williams asked that for one time only, the reimbursements be granted back to 2015 when the current council took office.

Finance Commissioner Terry Schuster objected, saying the cost of that will be $9,600.

He said the money has not been budgeted but could come from general expenses.

Schuster said he will not claim his phone expenses because his employer pays a portion of his cell phone bill.

He also pointed out that most businesses do not reimburse such expenses if they are not filed during the calendar year.

He said that since the provision was in the policy, commissioners could have known about it.

A motion to approve the reimbursement back to 2015 was approved 4-1, with Schuster casting the only no vote.

Kurt Wilson wins the top spot on April 2 ballot

Oregon City Commissioner Kurt Wilson won the right Dec. 26 to be first on the ballot in next spring’s city council election.

Wilson and commissioner Terry Schuster were both waiting when the city hall opened Dec. 10 to file their petitions to run for re-election on April 2.

City Clerk Charlene Ruthe said election law requires that a lottery is held to determine ballot order when candidates come to file at the same time.

She enlisted the help of Water Department employees Jeff Pennington and Scott Wallace when she held the lottery Dec. 26.

Pennington held the basket containing slips of paper with numbers — 1 for Schuster and 2 for Wilson.

Wallace drew the winning no. 2 slip.

Five candidates have filed for four city commissioner seats in the April 2 Consolidated Election. Also running are incumbent Tom Izer and newcomers Melanie Cozzi and Tim Krug.

A recently formed foundation has acquired three dioramas created by sculptor Lorado Taft.

According to a press release from the Coliseum Museum of Art, Antiques, and Americana Foundation, the group recently purchased the dioramas from the Superior Public Library, Superior, Wisconsin.

One of them will be on display in conjunction with an art exhibit beginning Friday, Jan. 18 at the Cork & Tap Gallery, 305 W. Washington St., Oregon.

CMAAA was formed to explore a new concept and renewed life for the Oregon Coliseum.

“We see it as an untapped asset to the community,” said CMAAA President Tom Mahoney, who is also Oregon School Superintendent. “It’s a concept that could enhance the community.”

The foundation includes representatives from nine governmental, notfor-profit organizations and community leaders from Oregon who hope to create a multi-purpose cultural

center, museum, recording studio, and tourist destination at the Coliseum.

Mahoney said the foundation planned to hold its first organizational meeting on Jan. 9.

“CMAAA’s vision is to create a facility to host exhibitions from artists representing all genres of the art world; a museum retail store; display loaned and gifted collections from local and outside sources; accommodate meetings, guest speakers, social events; establish a recording studio for educational and business use; the potential is endless,” the press release read.

Mahoney said the purchase of the Taft dioramas was finalized last July. They were paid for by a local private foundation, he said, with the understanding that CMAAA will reimburse the cost “if it gets off the ground.”

On display Jan. 18 along with the diorama, will be drawings of how CMAAA envisions the space at the Coliseum might be used.

Mahoney said the exhibit at Cork & Tap will be open for three weeks during regular business hours.

City attorney advises against lien request from local bank

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com It’s official — Polo residents can shop right in town for groceries in less than three weeks.

Tushar Patel, owner of what will be Polo Fresh Food Market, told the city council Monday evening that the new store at 205 S. Division Ave. (Ill. 26) will open for business on Monday, Jan. 28.

The news was met with approval from aldermen.

Jim Busser said he went through the completely updated store and gave it high marks.

Mayor Doug Knapp said he, too,

went throughout the store and thanked Patel for doing a high quality job on the renovations.

“It is really top-notch,” he said.

Polo has been without a grocery store for more than 10 years.

Patel bought the shuttered Polo Food Center, formerly Polo Super Valu, last year, and with financial incentives from the city has renovated it and purchased new equipment.

He also owns and operates a grocery store in Lanark.

The new store will offer a full grocery line, fresh meats and produce, deli, and liquor mart, and will initially be open daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the hours possibly expanded later.

In a related matter, the council decided against relinquishing its first lien position on the store.

As an incentive, the city loaned Patel $70,000 to help him get the

Horse and buggy was favored mode of travel Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK A horse and buggy also called horse and carriage was a light two-person carriage during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It was pulled by one or two horses.

It was also called a roadster or a trap. It was made with two or four wheels. It had a folding cloth top.

A buggy with two seats was a double buggy.

A buggy whip had a small tasseled tip called a snapper.

This was the primary mode of transportation between 1818 and 1918.

Today commercial horses and buggies are used in several places, for example in the New York City’s Central Park area.

The automobile replaced the horse and buggy in daily movements, which increased personal mobility.

Horse drawn vehicles traveled about six miles an hour. From this you could see it would be a four-hourplus drive from Oregon to Rockford.

The average distance a horse could travel was 25 miles with considerable rest periods.

Reiter transitions to Focus House posts

Beck to celebrate her 99th birthday with open house

Officials of the Foundation for Focus House announced last week that Christa Reiter, 46, of Oregon, has transitioned from Focus House Residential Counselor and Juvenile Probation Officer to the Alternative Program and Quality Assurance Coordinator.

According to a press release from the foundation, Reiter received her bachelor’s degree from Aurora University, where she majored in Criminal Justice.

She joined Focus House in 2016 bringing background in mental health from working in many set-

Reiter will oversee four programs including Alternative to Suspension, Alternative to Detention, Public Service Work, and GED programming as well as developing quality assurance standards and conducting quarterly audits.

Focus House Director Brenda Mason said that she and the staff at Focus House are thrilled to have Reiter in this position.

Adaline Beck, of Polo, will celebrate her 99th birthday on Jan. 22.

An open house, hosted by her daughter, for family and friends, will be held on Saturday, Jan. 19 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Pinecricker Cafe banquet room in Polo.

Adaline was married to the late Dale Beck, and they had four children, Bev (Bob, deceased) Merdian, Roger (deceased), Linda (Steve) Grossnickle, and Donna (Kenny) Soltow.

University of Illinois Extension and DeKalb County Forest Preserve are joining forces again this year to offer a day for families to get outside, have fun, and explore an enjoyable destination.

Winterfest 2019 is Saturday, Jan. 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Natural Resource Education Center in Russell Woods Forest Preserve, 11750 IL-72, located 1 mile west of Genoa on Illinois 72.

Extension staff and volunteers will offer a variety of educational and recreational activities for the whole family.

“The horse drawn wagon rides through the preserve are our big attraction,” said Extension Educator Peggy Doty. “The draft horses take passengers on a scenic ride through our preserve located right on the Kishwaukee River,” Doty continued, “this is a festival about

the season of winter so it doesn’t matter if we have snow.”

The morning will start indoors at 9:30 am at the Center’s bird viewing window where Doty will share some tips and tricks for feeding and identifying our local winter birds.

The Genoa Prairie Gems 4-H Club will be offering their annual fund raising lunch and snack sale.

Visitors can buy food for a reasonable price and help the 4-H club at the same time.

“The rest of the day is free but we do graciously except donations to cover materials,” Doty said. “It is a wonderful opportunity to bring out the whole family for one activity or stay for the entire day. Join your friends for a day in the woods as we celebrate the season of winter.”

Encourage reading text in electronic games, social media

A

s we begin a new year, we tend to look for ways we would like to improve our health and our lives in general.

While it may not be at the top of our lists, reading more may be something that we can all add to our new year’s resolutions.

For this month, we will explore suggestions for how we can support our children and grandchildren in working toward the goal of reading more.

There are two main reasons to read that apply to all ages and all stages of learning to read.

One is to read for entertainment and enjoyment. The other is to read for information.

We should emphasize both reasons, even for beginning readers.

I have had conversations with parents who are concerned because their children (of all ages) do not read anymore.

I ask them to consider the variety kinds of texts that their children might read daily.

It may not be books, but they do read texts of some kind.

We can demonstrate authentic purposes for reading, the real reasons we read, and the variety of kinds of texts that count as reading, and that will help our children and grandchildren have a more positive attitude toward reading.

Oregon drops game to Indian Creek 73-66

SPORTS ROUNDUP Hawk bowlers win again The OHS boys bowling team clinched the Northern Illinois Bowling Conference on Jan. 4. defeating Rockford Christian 3,326-3,240 at the Cherry Bowl in Rockford.

The Hawks moved the 16-0 in dual matches on the season.

Justin Poole led the way for Oregon with a 608 series, including games of

224 and 222. Kyle Strite (556), Jacob Smith (555), Tyler Meyers (525) and Eddie Buttens (501) also rolled threegame series. Charlie Bachman rolled a 255 game.

Chase Fashing paced the Royal Lions with a 589 series.

Jan. 3 AFC 47, Oregon 37: The Raiders led 11-6 after one quarter, then outscored

the host Lady Hawks 28-15 in the second and third periods to win a nonconference game at the Blackhawk Center.

Camdyn Penick hit three 3-pointers and led AFC (15-2) with 16 points, four assists and three steals. Jaynee Prestegaard added 13 points, seven rebounds and eight blocks, and Tristan Munroe scored 11 points.

Olivia Lambrigtsen was the lone player in double figures for Oregon (5-14),

scoring 12. Jenae Bothe chipped in nine.

Pearl City 40, Polo 37: The Wolves outscored the Lady Marcos 10-4 in the fourth quarter to rally for an NUIC crossover win in Pearl City.

Mallory Patterson’s 10 points paced Polo, which led 15-7 after one quarter, 24-18 at halftime, and 33-30 after three periods. Marah Blake added eight points, and Becca Wagner chipped in six.

Trailing 59-41 entering the fourth quarter, things looked bleak for Oregon’s boys basketball team against visiting Indian Creek on Friday.

However, the lead was whittled to 59-54 with 3:50 left on baskets by Noah Campos, Trey Woolsey and Jackson Buck.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, they missed scoring opportunities on the next three times down the floor and IC increased the advantage to 66-54.

Woolsey would have nine more points and Eli Rufer a 3-pointer, but the Hawks could not offset free throw by the Timberwolves in a 73-66 non-conference loss.

“We could have folded, but we kept coming back in the fourth quarter,” Oregon coach Quinn Virgil said.

“We had the fight in us all night.”

Woolsey was brilliant in the final stanza, scoring 17 of his game-high 23 points, including a couple of NBArange 3-point shots.

What IC had, though, was a starting five that could all score. Connor Todd (4 from 3-point) had 22 points, followed by 19 from Cooper Larsen, a pair of 6-foot-3 swingmen.

“Indian Creek (11-4) might have been the best all around shooting team we’ve faced,” Virgil said. “They don’t have football, so they play year round. We got burned early and had to go to a man-to-man.”

The Timberwolves demonstrated that early on, making 11 of their first 18 shots on the way to a 28-16 lead.

Three different shooters had a 3 in the first quarter.

“That’s our strength – shooting,” IC coach Joe Piekarz said. “We’re able to hit 3-pointers because of our inside presence.”

Remarkably, Oregon was able to take a 34-31 lead seconds into the third quarter on a Buck 3. IC finally cooled off and missed on 10 of its next 11 trips down the floor.

It was Campos, Buck, Woolsey and Ryer Finch leading the second quarter charge.

We did a great job of coming back,” Virgil said. “Not playing two and half weeks may have been part of the rust.”

What hurt Oregon in the third quarter, was IC getting inside for easy baskets.

“We had some defensive lapses,” Virgil said. “We’re small and we give up some boards. We also needed to be stronger with the ball.”

Tim McNally, a bulky 6-2 post player twice outmuscled the Hawks for offensive rebounds and had putbacks for a 40-36 IC lead early in the third quarter.

It also didn’t help having Woolsey being flagged with a technical for throwing a dunk down after the whistle was blown. That gave IC both the ball back to IC and two free throws.

Then, the Hawks went one missed shot, three straight turnovers and five more missed shots, as the Timberwolves finished off a 25-4 run.

“We started to get inside looks in the third quarter, but what a wild game of swings for both teams,” Piekarz said.

With a record of 6-7, Oregon returns to the Blackhawk Center this Friday for a match up with Winnebago.

Hawk wrestlers finish strong at Polo Invitational Oregon finishes second behind Camanche, Iowa

BY RANDY HOLLAND The Oregon wrestling team was in fourth place, 20 points off the pace when the semifinals of the Polo Invitational Tournament started on Jan. 4.

But four pins and one technical fall in the championship bracket and two pins in the wrestlebacks moved them to third place, 5.5 points behind Camanche and 2.5 behind Glenbard North at the start of the medal round.

There was plenty of excitement for the Hawk fans.

The Indians sent six to the championship mat and Oregon five, three matches head-to-head.

Both teams had eight in the medal round. While North faded, Camanche and Oregon were in a battle for first and second place.

Each team won five with the hardware on the line, and each team had four pins.

Oregon had four champions to three for the Indians, and a 2-1 edge in head-to-head pins, but the Hawks came up just short with better performances in the early rounds and more wrestlers giving Camanche the title 176-174.5.

Glenbard finished third with 158 points, and Lisle and Freeport had 133 and 132 to round out the top five.

Host Polo was a distant tenth with 67.5 points.

Andrew Herbst at 106, Jacob Milliman at 113, and Noah Paul at 132 all pinned their way to championships in the tournament.

Chase Clark had two pins and a technical fall to take first at 145. Jokiah Sewell had two pins on his way to a second place finish.

In a tough 182 pound bracket, Zachary Crandall contributed a pin and finished fourth.

Dre Smith was fifth at 126, all four of his wins by falls.

Austin Ebert had two pins and reached the fifth place match where he lost a 6-3 decision.

Sam Flores-Minnis and Adam Glendenning represented Oregon at 120 and 195.

Herbst had an opening round bye and pinned a cradle at 1:01 in the quarterfinal.

In the semifinal, he took a wing over the front and pinned at 1:36. In the championship, it was a chicken

Milliman also started in the quarterfinal and worked a takedown into a half nelson for a pin at 1:45.

Leading 2-1 in the semifinal, he swam with a half nelson and pinned at 3:17. In the title match, Milliman escaped and drove Briar Nevills of West Carroll to his back at 3:17.

Paul wasted little time in the tournament. After an opening round bye, he took chicken wing over the front at 1:01.

In the semifinal he worked into a headlock in 59 seconds. It was another headlock in 45 seconds to defeat Brennan Kramer of Camanche in the title match.

Clark had a bye and advanced with an outside cradle in 50 seconds.

In the semifinal, he had three nearfalls before a takedown into a stack to take a 16-0 technical fall at 4:24.

In the final, he caught Alex Davies of Polo a half nelson at 1:12 to grab

the gold.

After a bye, Sewell had a two point tilt before he worked a stack into a half nelson for a fall at 1:55. He worked a half nelson to pin the top seed at 2:56 in the semifinal.

He was roughed up by Cade Everson of Camanche in the title match, on his back four times to lose a 16-0 technical fall at 3:49 In the first round, Crandall worked a turk for a fall at 2:51. In a hard fought quarterfinal, he fought off two tough takedown attempts to hold on for a 2-1 win.

In the semifinal, Crandall had a chance for a pin at the end of the second but he went down a 21-6 technical fall loss at 5:59. In the third place match, he reversed to tie the score but lost an escape with fifteen seconds left in the match to go down 7-6.

Smith caught a tilt in 20 seconds to defeat Nicholas Cain of Polo in the first round.

Against the eventual champion in

the quarterfinal, he was pinned in a half nelson at 1:15. He got byes to the wrestleback semifinal where he found a half nelson for a pin in 43 seconds.

In the fifth place match, he stacked for a pin at 2:15 to get the medal.

Ebert hooked up the half nelson for a fall at 5:12 in his opener. In the quarterfinal, he went over in a tilt and was pinned with a half nelson at 3:11.

Ebert got a bye to the consolation semifinal where he trailed 7-3 when he worked into a butcher to pin at 3:11.

In the medal match, he escaped to tie the score at the start of the third, but lost a takedown and a two point half nelson down the stretch to lose 6-3.

Glendenning lost a wizzer and was turned in a half nelson in 50 seconds in his opener. In the first round of

Another pleasant surprise was a decrease in turnovers, a problem all season for the team.

“We played a little more patient and actually running an offense,” Lambrigtsen said. “Except for travels, we had fewer turnovers. “ One disappointment for the Timberwolves was poor shooting, attributed partially to the Hawk defense.

“Defensively, Abi and Megan (Buttens) have a low center of gravity and speed,” Lambrigtsen said. “Bre (DeHaan) did a nice steady job on defense too.”

On Tuesday, Oregon fell to Winnebago 65, Oregon 38 after falling behind 21-11 after one quarter and 37-22 at halftime.

A much-needed win for the Oregon girls basketball team came in the form of a 59-55 victory over Indian Creek (Shabbona/Waterman) last Friday at the Blackhawk Center.

“With tough conference play coming up, it was good to get a win,” Oregon coach Wendy Lambrigtsen said. “Our defense needs to step up.”

The Hawks moved to 6-14 overall and controlled this game from start to finish.

IC (5-13) made a push at the end, outscoring Oregon 11-2 to pull within 57-55 with 15 seconds left. But, it was Olivia Lambrigtsen sinking two free throws to clinch the win.

“Olivia showed composure at the free throw line with pressure from the other team,” coach Lambrigtsen said.

With the Hawks missing six of their last 10 free throws, it was Lambrigtsen sinking another pair moments earlier also. She led the team with 14 points and was 9-for-11 from the charity stripe.

Right behind Lambrigtsen in scoring was Jenae Bothe with 13 points.

“We’re glad to have Jenae back,” Lambrigtsen said. “She rolled her ankle at Polo, for the second time this year.”

It was Bothe scoring the first five points of the second half, as Oregon worked the ball inside for most of the second half.

“In the past, we had been outsized in the post,” Lambrigtsen said.

“Tonight, we had the advantage and wanted to exploit it.”

At 6-foot-2, Brenna Noon added a couple of easy baskets down low in helping Oregon to a 42-33 lead in the fourth quarter. Between her and Bothe, they also controlled the boards.

“We gave up way too many offensive rebounds,” IC coach Paul Muchmore said. “We’re small inside.”

Where the Timberwolves lacked size, they made up for it with the guard combination of 5-3 Jade Milostan and 5-7 Brooke Heiman.

The pair had 21 and 20 points and it was evident Muchmore gave them the greenlight to shoot at will.

“We saw that in our scouting report,” Lambrigtsen said. “Those guards come down and shoot on the perimeter and will also drive to the basket.”

Social media exposes teenagers’ abhorrent actions I debated whether or not to give my opinions on what has become an ongoing saga with Byron athletics and more specifically the football program.

Besides the nude “Oreo Run,” the latest issue to come up was a football player allegedly putting his penis in the face of another person on the bus ride back from the state-championship game.

Calling it a non-story, I did not feel the Oreo run merited media attention and expressed that in this column last month.

In a well-written letter, one local resident told me that my dismissal of the seriousness of such bad behavior is a slap in the face to coaches and parents that demand better.

I appreciate someone taking the time to do that and respect them for their opinion.

In Sunday’s Rockford Register Star, an editorial stated that the Byron School Board must hire an outside entity to review the culture of its sports program.

To me, that is a slap in the face to all the good coaches, administrators and elected school board members at Byron.

Not once was I aware of anything out of the norm in the two decades of covering their athletic program.

Not being a true insider at Byron, maybe there’s something I’m missing. But, every coach and administrator I’ve encountered has been more than satisfactory in how they conduct business, including head

football coach Jeff Boyer and athletic director Jim Kann.

As a public sector entity, school districts have always been under scrutiny and more so in recent years.

But, should they come under attack because of the behavior of their student-athletes?

Regarding the latest incident, why don’t we let the young man be responsible for his actions instead of making a blanket statement that this is a “cultural” problem?

Maybe I’m prejudiced by the fact I feel the same way about schools getting blamed for shortfalls of academic achievement.

I think schools; especially here in Ogle County where I am most familiar, do all they can to create a safe and positive environment in both academia and athletics.

Both students and athletes can thrive with the opportunities that have been created for them.

There has never been as much

adult supervision at the high-school level as there is now, but it is still impossible for a coach to know everything that is going on, be it the back of a bus or on a football field the night before a game.

Here’s one fact lost on everyone — teenage boys, not just at Byron, but all over the country, do some weird stuff.

The difference between now and when I was in school is that social media did not exist to expose it.

If there needs to be an indictment, how about starting with the culture of football itself?

It is the sport I grew up with and enjoy the most, but what about the macho element to it?

Does it create an environment where bad boy activity is perpetuated, be the high school, college or professional ranks?

Maybe that is a topic for another column.

Jan. 6 Deputies, Byron police, and the Byron Fire Department and EMS responded to a motorcycle accident with injuries at 1:44 p.m. in the 7,000 block of North River Road.

A motorcycle driven by Ernest B. Miller, 30, of Mt. Morris, was southbound on River Road along with another motorcycle driven by James D. Emery, 35, of Leaf River. Both motorcycles attempted to pass a southbound car.

Miller’s motorcycle went out of control, crossed over the roadway, and entered the west side ditch, where it rolled over.

Miller was transported to Mercyhealth, Rockford, by Byron ambulance with multiple injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.

Dewayne Harbach, 67, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

He did not post a full cash bond of $823.79 and was held in the Ogle County Jail pending a court appearance.

Taunya Hollis-Jared, 47, of Rockford, arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. She did not post a full cash bond of $1,329 and was held in the Ogle County Jail pending a court appearance.

Jan. 7 Kyle Sweet, 28 of Dixon, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for possession of cannabis. He was held in the Ogle County Jail with a $3,000 (10%) bond pending a court appearance.

School officials ultimately decided that the Oreo run was not a case of hazing. It took place the night before the Tigers kicked off the IHSA football playoffs with a 50-14 drubbing of Rock Island Alleman.

Undefeated Byron dominated opponents on the way to the state title game, where the Tigers suffered their first and only loss of the season.

All nine football coaches and nearly 30 members of the football team were interviewed in the school’s investigation of the Oreo run. No complaint was filed with local police.

Players who participated in the Oreo run were suspended for playoff games on Nov. 10, 17, and 23, the last of which was the Class 3A state championship game, where Byron lost 24-20 to Monticello.

None of the team’s top players was suspended.

Sheriff ’s department issues 121 traffic citations over holiday The Ogle County Sheriff’s Department conducted additional traffic enforcement over the holidays from Dec. 17 to Jan. 2., reminding motorists to drive sober and buckle up as part of the Illinois Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement effort.

The sheriff’s department joined the Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies across Illinois to reduce motor vehicle crashes, injuries and deaths by arresting impaired drivers and issuing seat belt and other vehicle code violations.

OBITUARIES R.L. “RICK” CRAWFORD R.L. “Rick” Crawford, 66, of Rochelle, died on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2018, at Serenity Hospice and Home in Oregon, with his wife of 46 years by his side.

He now soars with the birds he loved watching.

A bald eagle’s visit on the morning of his passing gave his family comfort that he has been reborn pain free and at peace.

He was a strong, proud and loving husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed his time with grandkids and working in his shop with wood or at his blacksmith’s forge.

LORRAINE M. ELSASSER Lorraine M. Elsasser, 95, of Mt. Morris, died on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019 at Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, Mt. Morris.

Lorraine was born on Aug. 18, 1923 in Sterling, the daughter of Henry and Lettie (Delp) Grobe.

She graduated from Sterling High School, Sterling.

Lorraine married Edwin Elsasser on Nov. 27, 1943 in Sterling. He preceded

DENNIS R. LOWER Dennis Russell Lower, 59, of Walker, Iowa, and formerly of Leaf River, died peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2018 after an extended illness at FHN Memorial Hospital, Freeport.

Dennis was born on Dec. 9, 1959 in Freeport,the son of Clarence and Ruth (Reed) Lower. Following in his father’s footsteps, he was a livestock dealer in Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois.

Dennis is survived by mother, Ruth Lower; two sons, Jeremy and Joshua; two daughters, Ashley Lower and Amanda Hankins; eight grandchildren, Malia, Logan, Ava, Gabby, Samantha, Nick,

Funeral services were held on Jan. 5 at Finch Funeral Home, 405 E. Hitt St., Mt. Morris, with Rev. Tracy Singleton officiating.

Burial was at Oak Knoll Cemetery, Sterling.

Charles F. Svihlik, 77, of Forreston, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019.

Charles was born on May 5, 1941 to Frank and Lydia (Barta) Svihlik in Chicago.

He graduated from Proviso East High School in 1959.

Charles married the love of his life, Marianne, on Oct. 28, 1963 in Oak Park.

Their love brought into this world three children, Charles W., Timothy, and Jeannine.

They celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary by renewing their vows.

Charles had a great love for the outdoors, trains, building model airplanes, and reading – especially about American history and novels by Dean Koontz and James Patterson.

He worked at Quebecor Printing doing bindery and office copies for many years, retiring in 2004.
