Mahoney speaks to Village Board about DLR

ehinton@shawmedia.com Oregon Superintendent Tom Mahoney told the Mt. Morris Village Board Tuesday that closing the David L. Rahn Junior High School in Mt. Morris is not something he wants to do, but is necessitated by decreasing enrollments and increasing maintenance costs.

It was the second time in 8 days that Mahoney presented his proposal to close the school after the 2021-22 school year.

Last week he presented the proposal to the Oregon School Board with Mt. Morris officials present in the Oregon High School gym.

On Tuesday, Mahoney presented a shorter version of the reasons for the proposal with 10 people in the audience.

Mahoney said he was recommending closing the 66-year-old school, which house s 7th and 8th grad e studen t s, because the building needs $6 million in repairs and is costing the district’s budget about $400,000 a year.

He is proposing closing the school at the end of the 2021-22 school year and moving students to Oregon High School.

He told the Village Board that his recommendation was not something he wanted to do, but was based on the district’s finances which have been operating at a deficit of $400,000 for 5 years, each year, due in part to maintenance costs for the junior high.

“I’ve wanted to keep that school open for as long I could,” he said.

He said other measures to cut spending over the last 5 years have already been undertaken, including cutting the teaching staff 14% and the administrative staff 28%.

The most recent setback for the district was the results of the state-required 10-year Health, Life, Safety survey of the district buildings. Done last fall, that study shows that nearly $6 million in state-mandated improvements are needed, including asbestos removal, at DLR. He said the building’s wastewater pipes also need to be replaced and the gym floor. “It can’t be refinished any more. We have sanded it down so many times that the nails are popping up. It will need to be replaced,” he said.

Oregon Superintendent of Schools Tom Mahoney spoke at the Mt. Morris Village Board meeting on Tuesday regarding a proposal to close the David L. Rahn Junior High in Mt. Morris.

The school district could issue bonds to pay for the work, which would then be passed on to all taxpayers within the school district as debt-service, Mahoney said.

Electrical, roof, and security upgrades have been made at DLR since the districts consolidated in 1994.

Mahoney said he commissioned a study from the University of Illinois at Springfield in 2020 to determine the best solution. Closing DLR will save the district more than $200,000 a year in operational costs, the study concluded.

Village President Phil Labash was one of four Mt. Morris residents who commented on Mahoney’s presentation last week.

On Tuesday, he reiterated that the school board’s decision not to rebuild the Rahn Elementary School in Mt. Morris, following a fire in 2004, was “devastating” to the village.

“This is a blow,” he said referring to the junior high proposal, “but that (Rahn elementary) was devastating.”

School board officials opted to move grade school students to the Oregon campus and not rebuild Rahn Elementary in Mt. Morris when the school burned in February 2004.

Labash also warned of “long term consequences” for the school district if the junior high is closed and a referendum is needed to pay for additions or new build-

ings if enrollment increases.

“I understand the short term concern, but there’s got to be a look to the future,” he said.

He said the plan to close the school does not allow for future growth and argued that current enrollment will not stay static.

In his original presentation, Mahoney said enrollment is not expected to increase for the school district.

Labash said closing the junior high will “further polarize” Mt. Morris residents and make passage of a any school-related referendum impossible.

Village Trustee Ed Higley asked what the plan for the junior high building would be if the school board agrees to close it.

Mahoney said options would be to try and sell the building “as is”, pay to have all the asbestos removed and then try and sell it, or raze it.

“Each of those have a different cost,” he said.

Mahoney was scheduled to offer more information and answer questions again at a town hall meeting at DLR on Thursday, May 27 at 6 p.m.

VILLAGE BOARD Nicholson new trustee for village

Longtime Mt. Morris resident Melissa Nicholson was sworn in as the newest Village Trustee on Tuesday, replacing Phil Labash’s seat who was elected Village President in April.

Nicholson told the board she was born and raised in Mt. Morris and earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Carthage College before returning to her hometown.

She is currently employed as the executive director of the Mt.

Morris Senior Center.

Labash said Nicholson was his choice for the seat after interviewing other candidates.

“I wanted female representation on the board,” he said. “And Melissa has the desire and willingness to actively serve the community. She will bring a unique perspective and I think she will do an outstanding job as trustee.”

Nicholson’s appointment was approved by a unanimous vote.

bweidman@shawmedia.com At one point in her life, Elizabeth Grogan was an unlikely candidate for her new summer job as the Polo swimming pool manager.

Grogan, 31, was in Mexico more than two decades ago and went for a swim in a lake. It was more than she bargained for.

“I jumped in and freaked out,” Grogan said. “I panicked. I couldn’t get myself to where I felt comfortable to be able to touch. That’s where I experienced some of the distressed drowning situation. I was very scared for a very long time. I would get in the water, but I would never go in the deep end. I was terrified of the deep end.”

A 2008 Oregon High School graduate, Grogan began working for the Freeport Park District shortly after high school. She soon was asked if she would like to teach some aquatic fitness classes. That spurred her on to become a better swimmer.

“For a year, I swam every day in the deep end, getting over that fear,” Grogan said. “I ended up getting certified as a lifeguard and loving it, and I ended up getting certified as a swim instructor.”

Grogan has worked at the Nash Center in Oregon for about 10 years, instructing aquatic fitness classes and teaching novice swimmers young and old how to swim. A big part of her job is getting her students to face their fears of the water, like she did.

“I love seeing that fear, like I had, but at the end of the lessons, they end up loving the water,” Grogan said. “I also have worked with adults that are 60 and older and retired, and want to learn how to swim. I’ve had multiple people that were that age that I taught how to swim. It doesn’t matter what age you are. You can learn how to swim and enjoy the water.”

It is with that background Grogan takes over as manager of the Polo pool.

It opens on Saturday, May 29 and will remain open through Labor Day weekend.

Then she will go back to working at the Nash Center, as well as at Stronghold Camp in Oregon, where she teaches aquatics classes and works in the kitchen.

At the Polo pool, she will oversee a staff of 21 lifeguards. Fifteen are high school students, four soon or recently will have graduated, and two are in college. Each must be a certified lifeguard, and Grogan is giving them some last-minute instruction this week in preparation for opening day.

first aid and all of their rescues,” Grogan said. “I’m very serious about that.

We love to have fun, but we also make sure that we’re keeping everyone safe.”

Open swim time is from 1 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Season passes may be bought and pool parties booked at the building adjacent to the pool at 303 E. Webster St. Starting June 7, water aerobics classes will be held at various times throughout the week. There also will be lap swimming; swim lessons still must be approved by the Park District board.

LOTS buys land to build transit office in Oregon

rrodgers@shawmedia.com The Lee-Ogle Transportation System has purchased land to build a hub in Oregon and expand ridership opportunities for community members.

In November, LOTS won a $2.8 million Rebuild Illinois capital grant to expand services and create a satellite office in Ogle County.

It’s been a goal for the agency for the past couple of years, and will allow routes to begin directly from Ogle County.

“There’s likely an unmet need for public transportation in Ogle County, and this will help meet that need,” LOTS Executive Director Greg Gates said.

The organization recently bought property on 3.7 acres in Oregon, at the corner of Pines Road and state Route 2 for $190,000.

They chose the spot because Oregon is a central location in Ogle County, and it’s close to state Routes 2 and 64, Gates said.

Lee-Ogle Transportation System recently purchased land in Oregon to build a hub in Oregon.

The site will be a smaller scale than the Reagan Transit Center, 210 E. Progress Drive in Dixon, and it likely will be around 15 to 18 months to complete the project.

It will also reduce “dead head” rides where LOTS has to send empty buses to Ogle County, he said.

“There will be a lot more rides available to the public in Ogle County,”

Gates said.

The next steps will be to hire an engineering firm and go through a bidding process.

The grant also will fund three new transit buses that will be handicapped-accessible and video cameras for the LOTS fleet.

Ridership has gradually been improving as coronavirus cases decline

and restrictions ease. It’s about double as it was a year ago. For example, LOTS had 838 rides the week of May 3 compared to 402 rides that time last year.

“Hopefully with the pandemic pushing into the background, public transportation can continue to grow, especially in Ogle County,” he said.

Kitchen Table in Rochelle is seeking volunteers

bweidman@shawmedia.com Amy Hayden is looking for a few more people to gather around The Kitchen Table.

Hayden is the vice president of the board of directors for The Kitchen Table, which she described as a “community café” at 7034 S. Klondike Road in Rochelle. It relies largely on volunteer help, and more are being sought to work shifts 2 days a week.

“We know that in order to keep costs down, make everything affordable, keep it running and running as successfully as we can, we rely on our volunteers,” Hayden said. “Each night, we need a lot of volunteers to make the operation go, so we’re reaching out, especially as the COVID mitigations are lowering and people are more comfortable out in public.”

The Kitchen Table has been in operation for about 4 years, and serves meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

A suggested donation of $5 per meal is the going rate to eat at The Kitchen Table. Some people pay more than that, while others pay less – or nothing. It is a chance for those in need to

There is also a brunch on the first Sunday of each month, as well as a steak fry the third Friday of each month.

There is a cook on staff who is in charge of preparing around 115 meals per session, while the rest of the operation is volunteer. Hayden noted she currently has a pool of 12 volunteers to draw from, and seven or eight of them are there both days, from start to finish – usually about 1:30 p.m. for prepa-

ration until about 7 p.m. for cleanup.

Ideally, that volunteer pool will grow to about 40 people, to work once a week, every other week, or even just a few hours at a time. Some of the jobs include waitresses, meal delivery, food preparation, certified food handlers, dishwashers, cashiers and parking lot runners.

Hayden is hoping to attract individuals with some hours to spare, or perhaps a corporate situation where a

business would have some of its employees take over for a night.

“Some of our positions are really easy and you can just sign up on our website and help us,” Hayden said.

“Other ones take a little bit more training, but there’s a job for everyone.”

The Kitchen Table has been able to remain viable due to some government grants, donations from community members, and customers who pay extra for their meals.

“We’re really overwhelmed each month with the generosity of our community,” Hayden said.

COVID-19 was not able to take down The Kitchen Table, as it remained open with carryout and delivery service. There were also take-and-bake Fridays, where a meal would be partially baked, the customer would pick it up or have it delivered, and then finish baking it at home. That program continues now.

“We did that constantly during COVID because we knew there was a lot of food insecurity,” Hayden said.

“Instead of weekly, we’re doing that on a monthly basis, and that’s still getting quite a turnout.”

Following a tractor parade, the pull will feature classes for antique tractors at noon, farm tractors at 2 p.m., trucks at 4 p.m., and Badger State Pullers at 7 p.m.

The entry fee for pullers is $25 per hook.

In order to provide an event that brings the community together, there will be no admission fee this year, but donations will be accepted at the gate.

Davis laid out the town of Davis Junction in 1877 Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

avis Junction is a village located on Route 72 three miles East of Stillman Valley. It is located where the Illinois Railway, Rockford line to Rochelle and the Canadian Pacific Chicago railroads intersect.

The population in 2000 was 491, in 2019 the estimated population was 2,344. This growth is due to a large Davis Junction Subdivision located south of the Canadian Pacific Railroad. (The site of the large Orchard Hill Landfill is located in Scott Township.)

Davis Junction is named after Jeremiah Davis. Jeremiah Davis located in Scott Township in 1862. He purchased 329 acres and moved there in 1858. He later purchased an additional 880 acres for a total of 1,200 acres. Jeremiah traveled overland to Galena to purchase land at the Land Office.

In 1875 Jeremiah laid out the first section of Davis Junction by the proposed Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. He contributed $4,000 for the grading of this railroad and also donated his property to the Chicago and Iowa Railroad Company whi ch buil t a bra nch lin e from Rochelle to Rockford.

He laid out the town of Davis Junction in 1877. Early settlers located around Beacon School and Beacon Post Office. A stage coach line ran from Rockford and Rochelle. At first one trip a week was made each way.

Before the Beacon Post Office was established the early settlers of Davis Junction traveled to Lindenwood for the mail for themselves and their neighbors.

The Village of Davis Junction Town Hall is a historic building now used by the Historical Society. This building was probably constructed one year after Davis Junction was founded.

the Town Hall building.

This building was used for town meetings and elections, which were previously held in schoolhouses. One interesting event was that a dance club leased the hall but an anti-dance group forbid them from holding a dance there.

When the dance proceeded anyway the anti=dance group pumped sulfuric gas into the hall. The dancers returned to the hall later that day.

to Preserve.

A wonderful six foot tall memorial marker is located at Jeremiah Davis Memorial Park at the north edge of Davis Junction.

This marble Veterans Memorial weights seven tons and took approximately a year to carve. At each end of the memorial are two soldiers, one facing downward reflecting on the past and one looking forward to the future. They are dressed in combat gear. On July5, 2014 a dedication ceremony was held.

you will be reminded that this was a railroad town and Jeremiah Davis was the founder.

The water tower with the steam engine is our favorite decorated water tower. On Route 72 is a tribute to Jeremiah Davis carved into a large white stone.

It reads (When Jeremiah and Jane Davis purchased 120 acres of land in this Scott Township in 1868 and moved here in 1859 there was not a house to be seen from any portion of this land.

It has been a challenging period for Obendorf clan

I imagine that many of you have been wondering what has happened to Betty’s weekly column. Well, life happens, and it has been a challenging period for the Obendorf clan.

On April 28, my 90-year-old father passed away at home in the presence of his loving wife of 70 years.

He had been suffering from seizures and other issues and this time he did not get up from his fall.

We agreed that it is better that he died at home versus a hospital, or a nursing home and we were thankful for the quick response by the Polo police, paramedics, and firemen.

Shortly after his funeral, my mother came down with a case of shingles that she is still working to overcome. Hopefully, she will be back writing her column very soon. In the meantime, here is an excerpt from my father’s eulogy given at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.

As I drove to attend mass on the morning after my dad’s death, I reflected on the stories and memories that we could share about my father. The gospel that day was Jesus’ words to his disciples after he had washed their feet: “Amen, amen, I say to you, no slave is greater than his master nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him.” Father Brad’s homily talked about how foot washing in our modern-day context represents our ability to humbly serve others by committing those small, simple acts of kindness. It is what Jesus described as the second greatest commandment: You shall love your neigh-

My dad was simple man and a foot washer. He did not go to college, have a prestigious job, or earn a lot of money but he knew how to love his neighbor. He was a people person who enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, and he seemed to know everyone, everywhere.

His ability to remember names was amazing and as his eyesight faded, he would try to identify someone by their voice. He would talk to everyone he encountered as that is what he loved to do. And I am sure that he had many of you on speed dial, as he preferred a dumb phone to a smart phone.

He also understood the importance of serving his community as he did many of the simple, volunteer jobs that make a small community like Polo so special. Whether it was driving friends to appointments or card games, mowing the grass for the Polo Historical Society, or just visiting someone in the hospital or their home, he wanted to help in any way possible. And trying to wrestle the dinner bill away from him was always a challenge.

While he did not invent the concept of “paying it

forward,” he truly lived the idea. For as his body failed him, it came time for him to rely on others and help him you did. From the efforts of my siblings, Susan, Krista and Bruce, to many friends, you all made it possible for him to enjoy his remaining years at home Kenneth Obendorf despite his many ailments.

It took an army: Mike and Paula, Jack and Veronica, Shirley and Bob, Bill and Bev, Bud and Lucille, Oren, Mike, Bob, Susan, Carrie, Donnie, Terry and many more have all been incredible foot washers for my dad. Thank you all for being there for him and for us.

Finally, there is the one person who sustained him and loved him the most, his bride for 70 years.

My mother is a saint in the making and the one who he truly could not have lived without.

Venerable Fulton J. Sheen spoke of three rings in marriage: the engagement ring, the wedding ring, and the suffering. Marriage is not easy, but in good times and bad times, my mother and father exhibited mutual love, commitment, sacrifice, and faithfulness for 70 years.

As Fr. Brad finished his homily last Thursday, tears streamed down my eyes. For the Sunday before his death, I had washed my father’s feet and clipped his gnarled toenails as the most basic tasks of life become an impossible challenge as you grow old. His was a life well-lived.

Thank you all so much for helping to celebrate his life with us today.

Oregon’s new River’s Edge Farmers Market begins inaugural season on Thursday, June 3 Organizers working on accepting SNAP cards

ehinton@shawmedia.com Oregon’s new River’s Edge Farmers Market starts its inaugural season on June 3 with 19 vendors situated along the west bank of the Rock River.

The new market, held from 5-7:30 p..m. on Thursdays throughout the summer, is located north of the Oregon Fire Department. The market will offer fresh, locally grown produce, quality handmade items, live music, and activities for kids.

Melanie Cozzi, commissioner of Public Property, told the council on Tuesday that 19 vendors have committed to the June 3 date.

“We have really been pleased with the turnout,” she said. “We have 26 vendors interested in the market with 19 coming next week.”

Commissioner Terry Schuster said the market will be unique because electricity is available to vendors who sell frozen meat. He also said the market will be able to serve customers who have SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) cards.

The SNAP program, formerly know as the food stamp program, provides extra funds to low-income families to buy groceries. The funds come on the Link Card which looks and swipes like a debit card at most grocery and convenience stores.

In the United States, over 45 million people are receiving benefits and just over 2 million of them live in Illinois.

“This will be great for people who want access to

fresh food and for those who use SNAP,” said Schuster.

Cozzi said organizers are working to get the SNAP acceptance done by the June 3 date. “We will have SNAP definitely by the second date if not by the first date,” she said.

Master Gardeners help with gardens Ogle County Master Gardeners teamed up with The Kitchen Table in Rochelle to create community gardens to help feed those in need and offer help by phone with gardening questions.

The Master Gardeners applied for and received funding through a Growing Together Illinois Grant that was made available through SNAP-Ed. David Kennedy provided the garden beds as his Eagle Scout

project. The horticulture department at Kishwaukee Community College started plants for the gardens. Along with the Master Gardeners, the local 4-H club members will be working on taking care of the garden beds.

You are encouraged to come take a look at the garden space during an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 6, and learn more about how it began, the organizations that will be helping out with it, and how to get involved. The Kitchen Table is located at 7034 S. Klondike Road in Rochelle. They are open for brunch that day from 11 am to 1 pm.

Social distancing will be observed, and face masks are required. There is no fee to attend this event.

Sunset Golf Course shined the brightest this past weekend in the inaugural Senior Men’s Lincoln Highway golf tournament.

The Mount Morris club led after the first round of the best-against-bogey tournament Saturday at Fairways Golf Course in Rochelle, then sealed the deal Sunday at Timber Creek in Dixon. Sunset finished with a score of +139, +15 more than runner-up Indian Oaks of Shabbona.

Rounding out the field were Shady Oaks of Amboy (+120), Emerald Hill of Sterling (+113), Deer Valley of Deer Grove (+94), Timber Creek (+76), Rock River of Rock Falls (+66), and Lost Nation of Dixon (+27).

Each team counted its six best bestagainst-bogey totals from the two

rounds. Two points were awarded for a birdie, one point for a par and zero points for a bogey. A double bogey or worse was a one-point deduction.

For Sunset, the top six players were Brian Weidman (+36), Jim Mertz (+24), Jeff Johnson (+23), Buzz Severns (+21), Paul Pazera (+18) and Pat Marshall (+17). Rounding out the lineup were Ed Higley (+14) and Ray Hawn (+8).

“I really enjoyed the tournament and I’m glad they started this for some of us old guys,” Severns said. “I knew we had a good team going in. It’s kind of sad we don’t have a lot of young guys coming up any more, but we have a good group of old guys here. We had a lot of fun.”

Medalist honors came down to a back-nine duel between Weidman and Dave Kemp of Shady Oaks. Kemp birdied the 14th hole to draw even at +29, but a key two-point swing followed on the 15th, as Weidman birdied and Kemp bogeyed.

Both players birdied the 16th hole, then Weidman clinched with a birdie on the 17th hole.

“The last four holes I kept the ball in play like I usually do, and I made some awesome putts,” Weidman said. “On 15

I made a 20-footer, No. 16 maybe a fivefooter, and No. 17 was another 20-footer.

That was the key. I kept the ball out of trouble and I made some very good putts. That ultimately was the difference between me and Dave.”

“The battle was fun,” Kemp said.

“Brian and I have battled for 40 years, from Shady Oaks club tournaments through Rock River Classics and Lincoln Highways, and it was no different today. It’s always going to be a battle.

It’s always fun. I had a blast today.”

The idea for the tournament came from Timber Creek member Rick Kessen, who earlier this spring contacted all of the teams that compete in the Men’s Lincoln Highway Tournament to see if there would be interest in having a senior version of the tourney.

Most came on board.

“It was wonderful, just absolutely wonderful,” Kessen said. “The weather turned out fantastic. We couldn’t have asked for any better weather. The two courses that hosted the tournament were fabulous and did a great job. They were in beautiful shape. The men’s Lincoln Highway team from Timber Creek did all of the scorekeeping on Sunday and did a great job.

“Everybody that played in the tournament, I never heard one bad word from anybody. There were no complaints, and we can’t wait for the next one.”

Next year’s event will again be held the third weekend in May, with Deer Valley hosting the first round, followed

by Emerald Hill for the second round.

May 22 Wrestling The Hawks traveled to Rochelle to face the Hubs and the Fulton Steamers. Oregon took a 21-0 lead over Fulton with a forfeit to Anthony Bauer, a 9-0 major decision by Seth Stevens, and first period pins by Herbst and Eckerd. Fulton won four by falls and added a forfeit to take a nine point lead, but the Hawks rebounded with a forfeit to Wolford and pins by Stender and Lane Halvorson to give Oregon a 39-30 win.

Post seasons for spring sports set to begin next week

B

elieve it or not, the post season for spring sports begins next week, in what will close out the weirdest high-school sports year ever.

Both the Forreston baseball and softball teams enter regionals on a high note, with well-deserved high sub-sectional seeds. They also should end the regular season as NUIC champs.

As of press time, the baseball team’s only blemish was a 3-2 loss to Eastland, a team they will likely see in the regional final. However, Forreston has shut out Eastland 6-0.

A big plus for the Cardinals is pitching, something smaller schools struggle with. In nine of their first 11 games, opponents only mustered one run or less.

As a No. 1 sub-sectional seed, Forreston has a very good chance to advance to the super-sectional.

They made it that far in 2018 and have also won three straight regionals.

The softball team’s only loss this season has been to defending 3A champ Sterling, but has several NUIC juggernaughts standing in the way in the post-season.

Past history has shown how good teams like Orangeville and Dakota are. Add in Pearl City and upstart Durand, and it is a tough gauntlet to navigate.

Traditionally, area 1A schools are better than those in 2A. When Forreston broke away from the

Stillman Valley, North Boone and Oregon have beaten each other with Stillman likely the best of the bunch.

The Hawks earned a No. 2 seed behind Stillman in the sub-sectional and have a good shot at winning the regional. The other sub-sectional is a dogfight with Richmond Burton, Johnsburg, NB and Marengo. One of those powers would face the Hawks at the sectional.

The girls track and field sectionals will be next Thursday at Winnebago. Oregon has state-ranked throwers in Brenna Noon in the shot put and Jenae Bothe in both shot and discus.

Noon would have been the top returning 1A state-placer in the shot for 2020, but we all know how that ill-fated season turned out.

Right now she sits at No. 1 with a mark of nearly 41 feet. The next closest competitor is just a few inches behind.

The boys have sectionals the following week and leading the way is Forreston hurdler Bennett Soltow. The returning state placer from two years ago, when Forreston placed seventh as a team with 21 points, is ranked No. 3 in both the 110 high hurdles and 300 intermediates.

The Cardinal 400 relay team is also ranked third with a time of 44.40. Running were Matthew Beltran, Jordan Neuschwander, Brock and Bennett Soltow.

With Rockford Christian bumped up to 2A, the sectional for the boys is wide open.

Oregon is led by senior pole vaulters Nathaniel Schone and Riley Benton, who were ranked No. 10.

Both the boys and girls track sectionals will be at Winnebago.

Oregon girls soccer team (2-7-1) hosts Monmouth-Roseville on Tuesday in sub-sectional action, with the Hawks eventually hosting the 1A sectional finals the following week.

Dixon has crushed everyone in the BNC by a 59-1 scoring margin and ends the year as league champ.

Unlike softball, there is a huge difference between 1A and 2A soccer, as the Duchesses only earned a No. 3 seed in 2A, compared to Oregon getting a No. 3 seed in 1A.

Postseasons will have different look

The topsy-turvy world of high school sports in the 2020-21 school year will conclude next month with state championships in the traditional spring sports, but the postseason tournaments will not have the traditional feel.

For softball and baseball, gone – at least for 2021 – are the typical regional and sectional hosts, with all games in a certain regional being played at one venue one week, and all of a sectional’s games being played at one venue the following week.

In the regional, the higher seed will host all games.

In the sectional, the team higher up the bracket will host the semifinal, with the team lower on the bracket hosting the final.

Baseball regionals will be played June 2-7, with sec-

tionals June 9-12, supersectionals on June 14, and the state semifinals and finals June 17-19. Softball regionals will be June 2-5, with sectionals June 8-12, supersectionals on June 14, and the state finals June 16-17.

In girls soccer, the team at the top of the bracket will host the sectional semifinal, and the team at the bottom of the bracket will host the final. The higher seed will host quarterfinal games.

The regionals are May 31-June 5, with sectionals June 8-12, supersectionals June 14-15, and the state semifinals and finals June 18-19.

The Marcos’ lone contested win against Durand was De’Angelo Fernandez’s pin at 145 pounds; Polo also received 11 forfeits.

OBITUARIES OREGON - Robert L. “Bob” Brashaw, 78, lifelong Oregon resident, died Wednesday, May 19, 2021 in Generations at Neighbors, Byron.

He was born Jan. 14, 1943 in Stockton, the son of Robert Lee and Lois M. (Terrell) Brashaw.

He married Phyllis Bradford on Dec. 30, 1966 in Oregon; she died April 6, 2014.

Bob was a 1961 graduate of Oregon High School, and a US Army veteran serving from 1964 to 1966 in the Vietnam War. He was employed in the finance business from 1966 to 1978, then as a finance manager in car sales, a mortgage broker from 2003 to 2005 and was a licensed realtor.

Bob was a member of Oregon Country Club, Oregon VFW Post 8739 and Silver Ridge Golf Course.

He was an avid golfer, and enjoyed vacationing in Florida and taking meticulous care of his cars.

Bob loved sports and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.

He is survived by his son, Jayson (Kelly) Brashaw of South Elgin; daughter, Jennifer (Jim) Kitzmiller of Oregon; grandchildren, Addison, Ashlyn, Avery and Cooper; and many nieces and nephews.

He also was predeceased by his parents; brother, Dennis Bates; and parents-in-law, LaVerne and Mildred Bradford.

A memorial service with military honors was May 27 at Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Oregon. Burial in Riverview Cemetery, Oregon will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is established in his name.

BAILEYVILLE - Ardis Printz, 84, of Baileyville, passed away Friday, May 21, 2021 in her home, surrounded by her family.

She was born Sept.

22, 1936 in Forreston, the daughter of Klaas and Mable (Welp) Bocker.

On Nov. 27, 1954, she married Rexford Printz Jr. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lanark. Ardis was a homemaker and waitress at Junction 64 and 26 Truckstop. She was a

member of St. James Lutheran Church ELCA in Forreston.

Ardis enjoyed mowing the lawn, farming, coffee with friends, shopping and most importantly, spending time with her grandkids and great-grandkids.

She is survived by her husband, Rex; son, Michael (significant other Susan) Printz; two daughters, Lorie (Dennis) Hazel of Mt. Vernon, and Julie (significant other Jeff) Langholf of Baileyville; two siblings Marlene Witmer of Mt. Morris, and Audrey (Rick) Stukenburg of Forreston; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Judy Bocker; son-in-law, Jim Langholf; grandson, Joshua Langholf; and brother-in-law, Brad Witmer.

A graveside service was May 24, at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

A memorial has been established for St. James Lutheran Church in Forreston.
