Oregon will host its 37th Candlelight Walk on Saturday, Nov. 25.

The family-focused lineup features activities for all ages. While the lighting of the tree on the courthouse lawn at 6 p.m. is one of the highlights of the evening, there are plenty of things to do before and after the tree lighting. The event runs from 3 to 8 p.m.

Kids will love the winter carnival inside the United Methodist Church, where they can visit with Santa, play games, make crafts, write letters to Santa and more. Carnival hours are 3 to 8 p.m.

While the kids mingle with Santa, adults won’t want to miss the Sip n’ Shop gift fair at The River’s Edge Experience, 103 S. First St., where they can peruse holiday craft vendors’ displays while sipping on an adult beverage. Vendors include Bearmoon Soap, Earthy Emporium, Darling Designs, Creations by Christy and more.

Enjoy a ride around the downtown on a horse-drawn carriage that begins outside the Coliseum Museum of Art. Inside the museum, a variety of performers, including the Oregon High School Jazz Band and the Madrigals, as well as the Byron Dance Academy, will take the stage for holiday entertainment. Hot

If you need to refuel during the action, stop by Candy Cane Lane, located on Franklin Street, and visit one of the many food vendors. The Byron Dance Academy also will perform there at 4 p.m.

Polo man’s body has not been recovered

ehinton@shawmedia.com OREGON – Four years ago, Kent “Bud” Dearborn Jr. and a buddy were fishing on the Rock River below the Oregon dam when tragedy struck.

It was Nov. 20, 2019, when Dearborn, 33, of Polo and James Swift, 64, of Forreston went missing after their boat capsized while they were fishing.

Swift’s body was found Jan. 3, 2020, 17 miles from Oregon, near the Dixon dam. Dearborn’s body has not been recovered despite dozens of river searches by civilians and law enforcement in 2020.

On Sunday, family and friends of Bud gathered again by the dam to remember the fatal boating accident that took their son, father and nephew.

“We’re never going to find him, but we still come here to remember him,” said Penny Lee of Oregon, Dearborn’s aunt. “We always hoped someone would find something, but ... so far nothing.”

On a sunny and mild afternoon, Lee gathered the group together for a photo from the west bank overlooking the area where the boat was last seen.

Some family members sat on a memorial bench dedicated in Bud’s memory.

Family and friends then shared a toast to Bud and walked to the edge of the Rock River, where they each tossed a flower into the water.

Each year the family places flowers on the bench that overlooks the area where the boat sank.

The bench was purchased through

donations the family received from fundraisers held after the accident.

The Oregon Park District, owner of Oregon Park East, poured the base and set the bench up for the family in September 2022.

The plaque on the bench reads “In loving memory of ‘Bud’ Kent Asher

Dearborn Jr., 1/6/1986-11/20/2019.” It includes images of two people fishing from a boat and a morel mushroom – two of Bud’s favorite things.

The date of the accident is burned into the brain of Candy Lindsey, Bud’s cousin, because it happened on her birthday.

“Still my worst birthday ever,” she said Sunday.

Lee said she often gets calls or text messages whenever a body is found in the river.

“People call to be helpful,” she said.

Bud’s mom, Florence Dearborn of Polo, walked along the edge of the river with one of her young grandchildren. She continues to pay Bud’s life insurance policy so his only son, Zander, 15, will have something when his dad officially is declared dead in 2026 – seven years after the accident.

Some of Bud’s fishing friends still cast their lines below the dam, feeling that somehow he and Swift are fishing with them in spirit.

The two men were fishing for walleye when the accident occurred on a cold and windy day with river levels high because of recent rain. Some river watchers speculate Bud’s body, laden with heavy clothing, became trapped in the “boil” at the base of the dam.

Several searches along the river failed to turn up any trace of Dearborn in the months after the accident.

OREGON – When Oregon native Kevin Groenhagen had his DNA tested several years ago, he had no idea the results would lead to a book about Neva “Grandma” Burright, the harness racing driver and first woman to win a Grand Circuit race.

“I knew I had Burrights in my family tree, but I was shocked to find that about 15% of my DNA matches were also Burright descendants,” Groenhagen said in a news release. “I decided to research the family and write a book.”

Groenhagen found the descendants of Cornelius Burright (1774-1873), buried in Chapel Hill Cemetery in Chana, Illinois, live in almost every state in the country and Canada. However, the most famous Burright lived in Groenhagen’s hometown of Oregon, Illinois.

“I had heard of Grandma Burright, whose second husband, Forrest Burright, was my first cousin, three times removed,” Groenhagen said. “However, she died in 1958, a few years before I was born, so I knew very little about her.”

Using an online newspaper database, Groenhagen discovered hundreds of newspapers from New York to Hawaii reported on Grandma Burright during the 1940s and 1950s. General interest magazines such as Life, Look, Esquire and Coronet also featured her and her exploits. She even appeared before a TV audience of millions on “What’s My Line?” in 1954.

Despite all the media attention she garnered while she was alive, Groenhagen found her legacy largely has been forgotten today.

“Early in 2023, I read the Wikipedia article for Oregon, Illinois, and noticed the list of notable people from Oregon, Illinois, which has a population under 4,000, didn’t even include Grandma Burright,” Groenhagen said. “In my opinion, this was a bit of an injustice because she is arguably the most famous person to ever live in Oregon.”

Groenhagen submitted an article about Grandma Burright in June.

Wikipedia approved the article in November.

I love Thanksgiving with the turkey, dressing and pumpkin pie with whipped cream. But I am beginning to think I am jinxed with this holiday.

Last year, I got COVID-19 on Thanksgiving and nothing tasted good except the pumpkin pie with whipped cream. It is strange, but when I am sick I want sweets.

Years ago before I had married, I had a bad case of strep throat. I said to Kenneth over the phone, “I would like some gingerbread and whipped cream.” It was not long before Kenneth’s mother came to my rescue with gingerbread and whipped cream. I never forgot how yummy that tasted.

Someone later informed me that when you are sick, you eat chicken noodle soup. I laughed and said, “No, not me.” I always say to the family just drop

So here it is Thanksgiving and once more I am not feeling well. I have so far polished off the ice cream, the rest of the Pop Tarts and several ice cream sandwiches and I can hardly wait for pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving Day. I seem to have cellulitis of the foot, which I never had before. The pain was intense and I could hardly walk.

The foot was swollen, red, warm to the touch and I just did not feel well.

So my week of decorating the museum turned into staying home curled up

under a blanket.

Linda, Beth and Silas took over the decorating, getting ready for the trolley tour and putting together the aluminum Christmas tree, which seems to be very valuable right now. It was missing the tree stand, so Beth and Silas will figure out what to do.

Remember those aluminum trees of the past? You had a lamp or a light that changed colors and the trees sparkled. I never bought one of those trees so I am excited to see this one.

They also found the dancing Santa that was displayed in Muench’s Shoe Store, the bubble light tree that John gave us and other things. But they could not find Little Miss Griffin AllWhite and they had to give me a call on that one. I had tucked her away beside the Muench display. So now she is back

with us for the holidays.

Before long we will have the trolley tours at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2.

Stop by the museum and see the dancing Santa and Little Miss Griffin AllWhite.

How many of you remember polishing your child’s shoes with Griffin AllWhite or maybe it was those saddle shoes that needed polishing? I certainly remember the white shoe polish and I used it.

Have a great Thanksgiving as our families gather. We are very thankful for what we have in our small community and the people who are making it a better place.

Rock River originates in Wisconsin, measures about 300 miles long

By OTTO DICK The Rock River in the north-central U.S. originates north of Horicon Marsh in Fond Du Lac County in eastern Wisconsin.

It flows southwesterly and joins the Mississippi River at Rock Island, Illinois. This about 300-mile river from its source in Wisconsin drops about 500 feet at Rock Island. It drains an area of 10,880 square miles.

Major cities along its course include Watertown, Janesville and Beloit, Wisconsin. In Illinois, the cities are Rockford, Dixon, Sterling and Rock Island.

In Dixon, future President Ronald Reagan served as a lifeguard on the river as a teenager.

The river’s tributaries include the Pecatonica, Kishwaukee and Green rivers.

The Sac and Fox tribes named the river the Sinnissippi, which means Rocky Waters. Numerous Native Americans traveled on the Rock River and its tributaries – the Pecatonica, Kyte, Kishwaukee, Pine and the Green. From 1673 to 1765, Native Americans shared the Rock River with French fur traders and Jesuits.

Travel on the Rock River started with canoes and later flatboats and keel boats and finally steam boats.

The Ice Age can be credited for the scenery of the Rock River throughout Ogle County. The pre-glacial Rock River flowed south from Rockford to the vicinity of Princeton, where it joined the ancient Mississippi River.

It did not flow into Dixon. It flowed 25 miles east of Dixon before heading southwest to the ancient Mississippi near Princeton.

The ancient Rock River formed during the Ice Ages but did not flow through Byron, Oregon, Dixon and Sterling.

The Great Ice Age began about one million years ago. There were four Ice Ages, each followed by long warm-climate conditions similar to our climate today. The Wisconsin Ice Age was the latest Ice Age beginning about 70,000 years ago and ending about 5,000 years ago.

Marilyn and I travel the back roads in Ogle County. Since reading about the Ice Ages, I now know what helped produce the beautiful landscape of Ogle County.

It’s also difficult for me to realize that at one time the Rock River was located about 50 miles east of Oregon.

I definitely am not an expert on the Ice Ages. The information above came from the 1976 Bicentennial History of Ogle County.

Case against Malta man to continue after judge denies motion to dismiss 5 OREGON – An Ogle County judge has denied a Malta man’s request to dismiss charges of murder and arson filed against him for the November 2020 deaths of a Mount Morris woman and her unborn son.

Matthew T. Plote, 36, is charged with killing Melissa Lamesch, 27, and her baby Nov. 25, 2020, and setting fire to her home in Mount Morris to conceal the deaths.

He faces four counts Matthew Plote of first-degree murder, three counts of intentional homicide of an unborn child and one count each of residential arson, aggravated domestic battery and concealment of a homicidal death.

John Kopp and Liam Dixon, attorneys for Plote, had argued that all the charges should be dismissed because too much time had passed between the alleged crime and their client’s arrest.

They also argued that Lamesch’s home had not been “secured” between the date of the fire and Plote’s arrest, thus crippling the defense’s ability to

conduct its own investigations.

Prosecutors countered that Plote’s due process had not been violated by the length of the investigation and all the charges against him should remain.

They said police had conducted a thorough investigation and investigators “took their time due to the seriousness of the crime with two victims” and were seeking and examining surveillance videos, DNA samples, including samples from the fetus, Amazon records and other records during the course of the investigation.

Plote has been held at the Ogle County Correctional Center on a $10 million bond since his March 9, 2022, arrest.

Kopp and Dixon filed a pretrial delay motion in September and on Oct. 30 called two witnesses during a two-hour hearing in their effort to convince Ogle County Judge John “Ben” Roe to grant the motion to dismiss. Roe said he would take all arguments under advisement and render his decision Nov. 17.

On Nov. 17, he denied the motion.

“Defense counsel restates the fact that between the discovery of the victims and the arrest of the defendant that 469 days had elapsed and that two autopsies had been performed (that were not attended by defense counsel),” Roe wrote in his answer to the motion.

“Defense counsel submits that the defen-

dant’s inability to conduct an investigation contributed to substantial prejudice against the defendant.

“Those claims are unfounded. The initial investigation was conducted to determine the events that occurred (i.e., whether an accident, murder or suicide occurred).

“The defendant’s motion is an assertion of mere speculation with no showing of substantial prejudice against the defendant,” Roe said in denying the motion.

Kopp and Dixon then filed two motions Friday, one asking the court to prevent the prosecution from using Plote’s “post-Miranda silence” and the other asking he be released through the SAFE-T Act. In the Miranda motion, the defense argues that Plote exercised his right to remain silent during an August 2021 conversation with police.

“The insinuation of guilt, based on no answers to the questions asked in this case, is not constitutional nor admissible,” according to the motion.

In the motion for a pretrial release, the defense argued that Plote had cooperated with the investigation and was questioned by police the day of the offense and again in August 2021 before his arrest in March 2022.

“During that time, the defendant was

never charged or accused of any other offenses, including traffic. The defendant never attempted to flee jurisdiction and at all times was cooperative with police authorities,” according to the motion. “The state has the burden of proving, by clear and convincing evidence, the defendant would be a danger to a specific person, the public or a risk of flight.”

The SAFE-T Act allows defendants to be released on no-cash bond. Under the new law, judges still decide whether a defendant is a flight risk or poses too much of a threat to one person or the community to allow release.

Roe set a hearing on the pretrial release motion for 11 a.m. Dec. 6.

A tentative jury trial date has been set for March 18. The defense and the prosecution estimate the trial would take a week.

Lamesch was found about 4:30 p.m.

Nov. 25, 2020, after firefighters responded to 206 S. Hannah Ave., Mount Morris, where they encountered heavy smoke and blaring smoke detectors.

She was found on the kitchen floor and pronounced dead at the scene despite lifesaving measures. She was a 2011 graduate of Oregon High School and an EMT at Trace Ambulance Service in Tinley Park. Her baby was due Nov. 27, 2020.

Oregon Thanksgiving Tournament Dixon wins championship: At Oregon, the Duchesses defeated Rochelle 56-31 in the afternoon semifinal on Saturday. Dixon beat Pecatonica 43-41 in the evening championship.

Oregon takes 12th: The host Hawks lost 48-25 to Genoa-Kingston in a ninth-place semifinal, then lost 34-28 to West Carroll in the 11th-place game.

Against Genoa-Kingston, Teagan Champley led Oregon with seven points, while Madi Shaffer, Avery Kitzmiller and Aniyah Sarver added four points each.

Against the Thunder, Sarver led Oregon with eight points and Ava Carreno scored seven points.

Shaw Local News Network correspondent LOMBARD – Unlike its previous 12 blowout wins, Byron was entering the land of the unknown with a trip to Lombard on Nov. 18 to face a Catholic League power with a playoff history even more impressive than the Tigers.

In a game that wasn’t decided until a fourth-down pass by Montini fell incomplete, Byron escaped with a 26-20 win.

“Our kids showed a lot of composure,” Byron coach Jeff Boyer said.

“This was the first time we had adversity and we responded well. It wasn’t our cleanest game. Montini’s a great team.”

The adversity manifested itself on the fourth play of the game when the Tigers fumbled a pitch and not only did Montini recover the ball, but star running back Alex Marre (27 carries, 130 yards) ran for a 20-yard touchdown on the next play.

On Byron’s next possession, it managed only one first down before punting for just the second time all season.

Montini got the ball near midfield and an air of apprehension began to spread on the Byron side of jam-packed Duffy Stadium.

It was Kye Aken who came up with the first spark for the Tigers defense.

He forced a three-and-out after an openfield tackle of Marre on a pass reception for no gain.

Taking over from its own 10-yard

line after the punt, the Tigers had a heavy load ahead of them, but with Caden Considine and Brayden Knoll, anything is possible. The pair began to shred the Broncos defense, with Considine doing it up the middle and Knoll on the outside. Consecutive runs of 20 and 26 yards by Knoll, the latter for a touchdown, cut the deficit to 7-6.

The Tigers defense continued to step

up with defensive end Kyle Jones stopping Marre for no gain and freshman Andrew Talbert grabbing an interception at the 24-yard line.

“They had a great game plan on defense and played it really well,” Montini quarterback Gaetano Carbonara said.

It took Byron only three plays to take a 12-8 lead. First, it was Considine breaking off a 49-yard run. Knoll capped the drive with a 22-yard TD, making a 360 move against a would-be tackler.

“It makes it easier when they key on Caden,” Knoll said. “Why wouldn’t you? It makes sense.”

Carbonara threw a 40-yard pass to George Asay into double coverage and against the wind to move into Tigers territory on the next possession, but the drive ended at the 31-yard line.

It was Knoll scoring the third touchdown on a 15-yard run, juking his way past the last defender. That gave Byron an 18-8 lead and a bit of normalcy returned to the Tigers faithful. Were the 18 unanswered points the start of another Byron romp?

Byron-Montini football game lived up to its billing With a pair of impressive playoff resumes, the Byron-Montini football game lived up to its billing as small public versus suburban private school.

When it kicked off at 1 p.m. Saturday, not a single person at Duffy Stadium had any idea what the final outcome would be, which made the trip to Lombard well worth it for the thousands of fans in attendance.

I had avoided Byron’s previous 12 games because of guaranteed blowouts.

This one was different and it kept everyone in suspense for almost the entire 48 minutes.

Coach Mike Bukovsky of Montini said if the two teams played 10 times, each probably would win five of them and it came down to Byron making one more big play than Montini did.

After Montini connected on a long pass to the 10-yard line late in the game, I thought things looked bleak for Byron.

All Montini needed to do was score a touchdown and kick the extra point for a nine-point lead. That’s when Montini self-destructed and, boy, was Bukovsky upset with his team afterward.

The most boneheaded move was an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after the catch, moving the ball back 15 yards and making a potential touchdown tougher to get. When the drive stalled, the Broncos didn’t hustle to get lined up for a field goal and lost another five yards.

Still, a field goal was makeable, but Bukovsky opted to go for it on fourthand-8 instead of fourth-and-3. The total

GUEST VIEW Andy Colbert meltdown became complete when Caden Considine intercepted the fourth-down pass and returned it to the 50-yard line. Even though Byron trailed 20-18, it was game over as there was no way a demoralized Broncos squad was going to stop Considine and the Tigers’ ground game.

Both teams caught some breaks, but the main difference was Montini being its own worst enemy while Byron’s errors were more of the natural flow of a game such as one of their backs fumbling after getting hammered by a Montini player. The Tigers were the more disciplined unit.

One major concern was whether Byron could match up physically with Montini. Bukovsky said his team had to play nine games of a physical nature.

Coach Jeff Boyer said Byron had only one.

That may have been a factor in the first quarter when Byron fumbled and Montini immediately scored. That was followed by Byron having to punt. After a softer slate of games, maybe Byron had to acclimate itself to some heavyduty pounding. Byron didn’t flinch, though, and soon became the aggressor.

Boyer mentioned how critical it was for his team to keep its composure.

Continued from page 9 Not against a squad with six state titles in 4A, 5A and 6A and one accustomed to a competitive schedule. With 24 seconds left in the first half, Marre did his best Walter Payton imitation and leaped over the goal line for a 1-yard touchdown, cutting the lead to 18-13. It capped a 13-play, 80-yard drive and was aided by an unusual chop block penalty on the Byron defense.

“Our bread and butter is to run it with Alex,” Montini coach Mike Bukovsky said. “A lot of times, though, our offense didn’t execute.”

The Broncos regained the lead at 20-18 early in the third quarter on a 46-yard touchdown run by Asay, greatly aided by a downfield block by Santino Florio. Montini started with good field position on a kickoff return to midfield.

Byron responded with a drive into Montini territory. However, a fumble gave the ball back to the Broncos and the promising drive was squandered.

After the two teams traded punts, Montini had the ball at its own 37-yard line with two minutes left in the third

Marre picked up a first down and then in what could have been the play of the game for Montini, Carbonara and Florio hooked up on a 37-yard floater to Byron’s 10-yard line.

But a dead-ball taunting penalty against Montini moved the ball back 15 yards.

“We need to be smarter,” Bukovsky said. “In the fourth quarter, we made too many mistakes and weren’t disciplined.”

When you’ve never been in a battle before, it becomes a whole different mindset and Byron passed that mental test by trusting in its abilities after trailing early. Methodically, Byron began to grind down a staunch Broncos defense.

As the game wore on, I was surprised that Montini did not move its defensive backs closer to the line of scrimmage in an effort to stop the run.

With how deceptive Byron’s backs are and how physical their line is, Montini needed more help up front.

Perhaps the Broncos have been so conditioned to run-pass options employed by their suburban brethren that they couldn’t process an all-running attack.

Interestingly, Montini owns wins over St. Laurence and Nazareth Academy, teams playing for Class 4A and 5A state titles. Bukovsky said Byron would be competitive in the tough Chicagoland Catholic League. That’s a heady compliment for a small 3A school.

It was the only game in town on Friday when Cambridge and Amboy played for the 8-man football title at Monmouth College. That combined with the two schools being relatively close to Monmouth brought out a huge crowd. Shaw Local reporter Cody Cutter described the atmosphere as being like a college game day.

The same was true when Polo hosted Amboy in the semifinals as some fans had trouble finding a place to park.

You’ve got to love what 8-man has done for school and community spirit in

places that normally wouldn’t have it if competing in 11-man.

That was even true in Ohio and LaMoille, two schools that coop football with Amboy.

With the way it dismantled the 8-man field, Amboy did catch some flak from folks who felt it should be in 11-man. In the championship game, Amboy led 30-0 with 6:22 left in the first quarter and 60-0 with 6:28 left in the second quarter.

That’s akin to Byron pounding its first-round public school opponent.

Lost in all the football hoopla was the state volleyball tournament, with Galena proudly representing the NUIC with a 1A championship. This was the 11th time in 15 years that the conference sent a volleyball team downstate.

Galena is one of the few small schools that has had success in both volleyball and basketball, with state trophies the past two years in basketball. It’s neat to see the girls at Galena forgoing specialization to compete in both sports.

Talk about nail-biters in the 3A state finals. Wheaton St. Francis won with all five of its games decided by two points.

It doesn’t get any closer than that.

In 2A through 4A, five of the six finalists were private schools. Volleyball always has been huge in private schools.

The Broncos rebounded from that error and made a first down. But Byron’s defense forced a fourth down and Montini lined up for a 27-yard field-goal attempt.

That’s when things went haywire for Montini. A delay of game penalty moved the ball back five yards and Bukovsky decided to go for it instead.

“We had missed our last extra point and I liked our one-on-one matchup,” Bukovsky said.

The decision proved to be costly with Considine picking Carbonara off and returning it 40 yards. The sophomore, who was on the field for almost the entire game, read Carbonara and was in perfect position to make the interception.

“I was surprised they went for it,” Boyer said. “That flipped the field with Caden’s interception.”

From being a few yards away from making it a two-score game at 29-20 and putting Byron on the ropes, Montini suddenly found itself on the defensive against a Tigers ground game that ended with Considine gaining 240 yards on 33 carries and Knoll adding 145.

Even though Byron did not attempt a single pass, Montini still opted to leave its three defensive backs away from the

line of scrimmage, effectively making it an 11-on-8 game.

“They kept bouncing stuff outside and we needed flanks or you’re not going to stop anything,” Bukovsky said.

With the game on the line, it was Considine racking up big chucks of yardage, carrying the ball eight of the nine times on a winning 50-yard scoring drive, including the final yard for an easy stand-up score. Knoll added the PAT run and Byron led 26-20 with 3:29 left in the game.

“When I was a senior, [coach Everett] Stine always said whatever I called worked. That’s kind of how I feel with this group,” said Boyer, the quarterback on the 1999 state championship team.

Nick Ingram almost ended the game for Byron with a sack of Carbonara on third down, only to see the Broncos quarterback hit Asay for a 24-yard gain on fourth-and-15. That was all the offense Montini could muster. Another fourth-down pass fell incomplete and Byron could begin celebrating a trip downstate to face Mount Carmel.

The game to determine the 3A state champion will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Hancock Stadium on the campus of Illinois State University in Normal.

PRINCETON – When the staff at a Princeton business spins a yarn about their products, the last thing they’re trying to do is pull the wool over your eyes.

But they’d more than happy to pull it over your head, or your hands and feet, for that matter.

That’s because they’re big fans of the fluffy stuff that comes from a nearby farm and fills the sales floor at The Alpaca Shop, where you’ll find all things alpaca, including people who really know their stuff.

Customers at The Alpaca Shop will find a full line of products that begin life on a Bureau County farm operation outside of town that nearly 150 fluffy and friendly animals call home, and where the herd will give you the fur off their backs.

Alpacas are a relatively recent transplant to the United States, but they’ve become increasingly popular with smaller farms and hobby farmers. The wool that gets sheared each year from the huacaya alpacas at Tiskilwa Farms is used to create clothing, yarn, rugs, blankets and other items sold at The Alpaca Shop in downtown Princeton.

While you won’t find a lot of alpaca merch at your average big-box store, that doesn’t mean there’s no demand for it. The store has found success catering to customers who flock to the flock that comes from alpacas. The store is an extension of the success found on the farm, which raises and sells alpacas, as well as helping people learn more about the animal through farm tours.

The farm and store are owned by Bob Sash of Tiskilwa, and run by a team that includes Mike Kovacs, who handles much of both places’ marketing and promotion.

“The shop came from having all of this yarn and wondering what we were going to do with it,” Kovacs said. “We always had a small shop at the farm for when we have farm tours, and answering questions like, ‘Why do we do this and why are you raising these funny animals?’ It’s because they make this beautiful product.’”

Sash has farmed in Tiskilwa since the mid-1980s and started raising alpacas in 1999. The shop opened in Tiskilwa a few years ago before moving to Princeton in April 2022. Tables and racks of yarn and clothing make up the center of the store’s floor, and shelves with more

clothing and yarn bundles surround line the walls — and that’s not all that’s on the wall. There’s a lot of pride, too.

The hard work that goes into farm’s livestock in trade has been rewarded with a host of honors that adorn the walls — large, colorful ribbons won at alpaca shows across the nation, proudly showing customers that the alpacas the wool came from are highly regarded. Sash’s alpacas travel to about eight shows a year across the country, competing to be champions of their color and sex, and ultimately best of show. Factors in quality include density of fleece, eyes, teeth, toenails and overall appearance of each alpaca.

After trying out several ways to grow his operation early on, Sash settled on alpacas, and it’s proven to be a winning formula for the farm. He started out with just two, but it didn’t take long to become a leader of the alpacas. A year later he had rounded 40 more, and today Tiskilwa Farms is one of the top alpaca farms in the Midwest.

“Bob had owned the farm since the mid-’80s and had tried a little bit of everything while still working a career in Chicago,” Kovacs said. “He had done pigs, he had done sheep, he had done miniature cattle, he had done donkeys and ponies, and they all weren’t successful. The farm has seen an entire lifespan of alpacas come and go in nearly a quarter-century, and the operation continues to thrive. This year, nearly 45 new babies were born on the farm, and that number is expected to nearly double next year.

“It’s been a good run, and we’re not getting out of it any time soon,” Kovacs

said. “The shop gives us more visibility.

We really look at the shop as the entryway for people to learn about alpacas, buy a nice sweater, or think, ‘I can have my own.’ We look at the shop as really being a marketing piece to selling our animals.”

Breeding is done more deliberately, with quality in mind.

“The U.S. quality of alpacas today is better than the average quality in South America,” Kovacs said. “In South America, boys and girls are together, whichever one of the males just happens to breed that female, that’s what happens.”

Alpacas also make great introductory animals for those who want to learn about taking care of large animals, Kovacs said. There’s not much consternation in caring for them, and they are environmentally friendly, too. Unlike goats, who rip grass from the ground to eat it, alpacas are gentler on the grass and dirt because they have teeth on just one end of their mouths, and they don’t weigh as much as other livestock, so they aren’t as hard on the land as they move around.

The average lifespan of an alpaca is 15 to 20 years, and because they aren’t raised for the purpose of slaughtering, they last longer on a farm and can establish longer human-to-animal attachments, often longer than pets, such as dogs and cats.

While the number of alpacas nationwide has remained about the same the past few years, the recent Covid-19 pandemic proved to be a boon for alpaca farmers. Instead of being limited to a few large farms, several smaller farms have added a few alpacas to their inventory to try and profit from their wool.

“Everybody was home, and anyone who had a five-acre farmette that had a little bit of space suddenly wanted more livestock, and we sold more alpacas in 2020 and 2021 than we had sold in any year,” Kovacs said. “We sell a lot to people who have a small farm, or are about to retire and want something to do, or people with young kids and want to teach them the hard work of taking care of animals.”

Many outside the farm world often confuse alpacas with llamas, owing to their similarities, but there are differences. While the two are related, and can even be crossbred, alpacas are noticeable smaller, weigh less and are less aggressive. And unlike llamas, alpacas aren’t bred as a working animal, but rather for their fur.

If you want to learn more about alpacas, Sash’s business is a one-stop shop for all things alpaca — including knowledge. People not familiar with al-

pacas can make The Alpaca Shop their initial stop in learning all about them.

To help promote the animal, and the store, Alpaca Shop clerk Brittany Sharma began a weekly “Fun Fact Friday” feature on the store’s Facebook page, featuring fun and informative facts about the furry four-leggers. Recent posts shared covered the clicking noises alpacas make when they want to express friendly behavior, alpaca’s average grass consumption (about 2.5 acres of grass per day), and an alpaca history lesson: they were domesticated 6,000 years ago by the ancient Incas.

“It helps bring some awareness to the differences between llamas and alpacas, and a lot of fun little details about the alpacas,” Sharma said. “We’ve seen our Facebook page grow in the last two months or so when we started doing that regularly. It’s definitely helping to get more community engagement.”

Sharma also enjoys seeing the many people who have come in to see what alpacas, and their wool, are all about.

She’s come across many customers who like knowing that the shop is locally owned and that the products come from just a few miles away.

“I really love that it’s something that is small-town,” Sharma said. “I’ve always been very craft-oriented and animal-geared, so having the best of both worlds has been a wonderful, relaxing environment that I get to share a lot of

ehinton@shawmedia.com OREGON – A rural Oregon man is appealing a judge’s decision to keep him in jail as he faces charges of possessing images of child sexual abuse.

Kris D. Stubblefield, 32, has pleaded not guilty to eight counts of possessing images after being arrested in October

by Ogle County sheriff’s deputies who received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Stubblefield’s Kris D. Stubblefield home, east of Oregon, was searched Oct. 12 after a monthslong investigation.

He was arrested Oct. 21 and charged Oct. 13 with possession of six videos of children engaged in sex acts and two lewd photos of children. Charging documents said all of the children were younger than 13 and some were as young as 3.

The Illinois State Police and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, both of which work through the Illinois Crimes Against Children task force to target abusive crimes against children,

assisted in the investigation. Charging documents indicated the offenses occurred in August and October.

On Nov. 16, Stubblefield appeared before Ogle County Judge John “Ben” Roe for a status hearing. Ogle County Public Defender Michael O’Brien appeared with Stubblefield. Ogle County Assistant State’s Attorney Heather Kruse appeared for the state.

Earlier this month, Stubblefield filed an appeal of an Oct. 24 decision by Judge Clayton Lindsey to keep him in custody that cited the seriousness of the charges.

At that hearing, Kruse argued to keep Stubblefield in custody, citing reports from the Illinois attorney general and the sheriff’s office that he is registered as a juvenile sex offender and was in possession of more than 1,500 images of children engaged in sex acts with adults and some with other children. The photos and videos were found on Stubblefield’s phone, Kruse said.

When police searched his home, he agreed to speak to law enforcement and told an Ogle County sheriff’s detective that he was a “purveyor of taboo material,” Kruse told the court.

Kruse said Stubblefield also used file-sharing services to share files and to access “chats” on how to find files.

“Because of his admissions to detectives

about downloading and storing these images, he poses a real and present threat to the community and the public,” she told Lindsey.

She also said other cases when Stubblefield was a juvenile showed “an ongoing problem, especially with younger children.” She argued he should remain in jail because “there is no way to monitor him.”

Public Defender Kathleen Isley argued for Stubblefield’s release, citing his cooperation with law enforcement.

“We do acknowledge this is an extremely serious offense. He does have a juvenile record from when he was a teen that has been adjudicated and he has remained on the sex offender list,” Isley said at the October hearing.

Isley argued there was no indication that Stubblefield had failed to report or to be monitored. She said he did not elude law enforcement in any way and he has no history of violence and said any conditions for his release could be controlled by the court to mitigate any threat to the public.

Lindsey said the charges were too serious to allow his release, noting that 1,500 files were found and there was a huge public concern over images of child sexual abuse and human trafficking. Stubblefield’s juvenile convictions

also weighed on the decision to keep him in jail, Lindsey said.

In a pretrial hearing Nov. 9, Judge John Redington agreed with Lindsey, denying the defense’s motion for a pretrial release and on Thursday, Roe also upheld the state’s argument to keep Stubblefield in custody.

“I will rule in favor of the state on that issue,” Roe said when denying the defense’s oral motion for pretrial release.

Stubblefield’s appeal is filed under the Pretrial Fairness Act and it argues he should be released because the state did not meet its burden of proving any real threat existed to people or the community if Stubblefield were to be released. It also argues that the court “erred in its determination that no or combination of conditions would reasonably ensure the appearance of defendant for later hearings.” And it argues that the court has jurisdiction to review Stubblefield’s continued detention at each proceeding hearing despite the appeal.

Stubblefield has been declared indigent and will be represented by a state appellate defender in connection with the appeal.

Stubblefield’s next court appearance in Ogle County is 1:30 p.m. Nov. 27.

The Finance Director of the Sterling-Rock Falls Family YMCA coordinates accounting functions such as general ledger/account maintenance, account reconciliation, data processing and reporting.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Maintains an accounting system to accomplish the proper recording and reporting of all operations, transactions, assets, and liabilities of the YMCA for all funds.

Serves as a resource person to management and program personnel in all matters relating to accounting.

Responsible for payroll, accounts payable, processing expense reports and business credit card reconciliations.

Prepares various internal and external reports as required by management, the Board, and outside agencies.

Maintains and tracks contracts, invoices, payments, and insurance policy information.

Prepares for annual independent audit.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field preferred.

Three years of experience or more in bookkeeping, and/or accounting role.

Knowledge of banks, banking systems and cash management.

Knowledge of and expertise with computerized accounting and payroll systems.

Ability to develop and use spreadsheets and standard business software systems.

Salary and Benefits $50,000-60,000 Retirement contributions [10% shared - 4% employee; 6% YMCA], vacation plan, health plan and other benefits per personnel policy.

ORDINANCE NO. 2023-020 ORDINANCE AUTHORIZING THE CITY OF OREGON, OGLE COUNTY, ILLINOIS TO BORROW FUNDS FROM THE WATER POLLUTION CONTROL LOAN FUND ADOPTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF OREGON THIS 14th DAY OF NOVEMBER, 2023 ORDINANCE NO. 2023-020 AN ORDINANCE AUTHORIZING THE CITY OF OREGON, OGLE COUNTY, ILLINOIS TO BORROW FUNDS FROM THE WATER POLLUTION CONTROL LOAN FUND WHEREAS the City of Oregon, Ogle County, Illinois operates its sewerage system (“the System”) and in accordance with Section 65ILCS 5/139 of the Illinois Municipal Code, and the Local Government Debt Reform Act, 30 ILCS 350/1 (collectively, “the Act”), and WHEREAS the Mayor and City Council of the City of Oregon (the “Corporate Authorities”) have determined that is advisable, necessary and in the best interests of public health, safety and welfare to improve the wastewater treatment plant. The wastewater treatment plant improvements include the construction of a new Headwork building with a fine screen and grit removal equipment. The wastewater treatment plant improvements also include any acquisition of necessary land or rights in land or other services necessary, useful or advisable to the construction and installation (“the Project”), all in accordance with the plans and specifications prepared by consulting engineers of the City, which project will have a useful life in excess of 30 years; and WHEREAS the estimated cost of construction and installing the Project, including engineering, legal financial and other related expenses is $7,323,000, and there are insufficient funds on hand and lawfully available to pay these costs; and WHEREAS, the loan shall bear an interest rate as defined by 35 Ill Adm. Code 365, which does not exceed the maximum rate authorized by the Bond Authorization Act, as amended, 30 ILCS 305/0.01 et seq., at the time of the issuance of the loan; and WHEREAS, the principal and interest payment shall be payable semi-annually, and the loan shall mature in 30 years, which is within the period of useful life of the Project; and WHEREAS the costs are expected to be paid for with a loan to the City from the Water Pollution Control Loan Fund through the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, the loan to be repaid from revenues of the System and the loan is authorized to be accepted at this time pursuant to the Act; and WHEREAS, in accordance with the provisions of the Act, the City is authorized to borrow funds from the Water Pollution Control Loan Fund in the aggregate principal amount of $11,000,000 to provide funds to pay the costs of the Project; and WHEREAS the loan to the City shall be made pursuant to a Loan Agreement, including certain terms and conditions, between the City and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency; NOW THEREFORE be it ordained by the Corporate Authorities of Oregon, Ogle County, Illinois as follows: SECTION 1. INCORPORATION OF PREAMBLES The Corporate Authorities hereby find that the recitals contained in the preambles are true and correct, and incorporate them into this Ordinance by this reference.

SECTION 2. DETERMINATION TO BORROW FUNDS It is necessary and in the best interests of the City to construct the Project for the public health, safety and welfare, in accordance with the plans and specifications, as described; that the System continues to be operated in accordance with the provisions of the Act; and that for the purpose of constructing the Project, it is hereby authorized that funds be borrowed by the City in an aggregate principal amount (which can include construction period interest financed over the term of the loan) not to exceed $11,000,000.

SECTION 3. PUBLICATION This Ordinance, together with a notice in the statutory form (attached hereto as Exhibit A), shall be published once within ten days after passage in the Oregon Republican Reporter, a newspaper published and of general circulation in the City, and if no petition, signed by electors numbering 10% or more of the registered voters in the City (i.e. 218 electors) asking that the question of improving the System as provided in this Ordinance and entering into the Loan Agreement therefore be submitted to the electors of the City, is filed with the City Clerk within 30 days after the date of publication of this Ordinance and Notice, then this Ordinance shall be in full force and effect. A petition form shall be provided by the City Clerk to any individual requesting one.

SECTION 4. ADDITIONAL ORDINANCES If no petition meeting the requirements of the Act and other applicable law is filed during the 30 day petition period, then the Corporate Authorities may adopt additional ordinances or proceedings supplementing or amending this Ordinance providing for entering into the Loan Agreement with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, prescribing all the details of the Loan Agreement, and providing for the collection, segregation and distribution of the revenues of the System, so long as the maximum amount of the Loan Agreement as set forth in the Ordinance is not exceeded and there is no material change in the Project or purposes described herein. Any additional ordinances or proceedings shall in all instances become effective in accordance with the Act or other applicable law. This Ordinance, together with such additional ordinances or proceedings, shall constitute complete authority for entering into the Loan Agreement under applicable law.

However, notwithstanding the above, the City may not adopt additional ordinances or amendments which provide for any substantive or material change in the scope and intent of this Ordinance, including but not limited to interest rate, preference, or priority of any other ordinance with this Ordinance, parity of any other ordinance with this Ordinance, or otherwise alter or impair the obligation of the City to pay the principal and interest due the Water Pollution Control Loan Program without the written consent of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

SECTION 5. LOAN NOT INDEBTEDNESS OF CITY Repayment of the loan to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency by the City pursuant to this Ordinance is to be solely from the revenues derived from the user charge and the loan does not constitute an indebtedness of the City within the meaning of any constitutional or statutory limitation.

SECTION 6. APPLICATION FOR LOAN The Mayor is hereby authorized to make application to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency for a loan through the Water Pollution Control Loan Program, in accordance with the loan requirements set out in 35 Ill. Adm. Code 365.

SECTION 7. ACCEPTANCE OF LOAN AGREEMENT The Corporate Authorities hereby authorize acceptance of the offer of a loan through the Water Pollution Control Loan Program, including all terms and conditions of the Loan Agreement as well as all special conditions contained therein and made a part thereof by reference. The Corporate Authorities further agree that the loan funds awarded shall be used solely for the purposes of the Project as approved by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency in accordance with the terms and conditions of the Loan Agreement.

SECTION 8. RESERVE ACCOUNTS As long as the City has outstanding revenue bonds payable from revenues of the system that are senior to the revenue bond authorized by this ordinance, the City shall maintain an account, coverage and reserves equivalent to the accounts, coverages and reserves required by the outstanding ordinances.

SECTION 9. AUTHORIZATION OF MAYOR TO EXECUTE LOAN AGREEMENT The Mayor is hereby authorized and directed to execute the Loan Agreement with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. The Corporate Authorities may authorize by resolution a person other than the Mayor for the sole purpose of authorizing or executing any documents associated with payment requests or reimbursement from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency in connection with this loan.

SECTION 10. SEVERABILITY If any section, paragraph, clause or provision of this Ordinance shall be held invalid, the invalidity of such section, paragraph, clause or provision shall not affect any of the other provisions of this Ordinance.

SECTION 11. REPEALER All ordinances, resolutions or orders, or parts thereof, which conflict with the provisions of this Ordinance are, to the extent of such conflict, hereby repealed.
