Performances scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 13 Members of the Oregon Elementary Theatre will dance the Shipoopi and revel in the excitement of the Wells Fargo Wagon coming to town when they present The Music Man KIDS. The show featuring 23 students in grades 3-6 premieres on Saturday, Nov. 13.

Performances are at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the Oregon High School Theatre.

Tickets are $5 for ages 12 and up and $3 for those 12.

BRIEFS Oregon VFW to fill, deliver Christmas food baskets for those in need

Oregon VFW Post 8739 will once again be making up and delivering Christmas food baskets to families and individuals who are in need in the Oregon area.

“This year has been almost as tough as last year for everyone with the Covid 19 which led to lost jobs and sick families,” said Commander Bob Coulter. “We are asking those who donate for this purpose please be generous again this year. We normally do 120+ baskets. We feel the number will be much larger this year. We want to send a heartfelt thanks to those who donate. It truly makes people happy.”

Any family or individual who is in need must call the VFW Monday or Wednesday from 3-7 p.m., 815-732-6851 to sign up.

“Please do not call on Fridays as our phone and people are busy with other work. The Post is closed Tuesday and Thursday. We will start taking calls Nov. 8,” Coulter said.

Thanksgiving dinner distribution offered in Mt. Morris

Loaves & Fish Food Pantry will distribute Thanksgiving Meal Boxes again this year on Monday, Nov. 22, from 2-6 p.m. (or while the supply lasts).

Meals will be distributed to Mt. Morris and Leaf River residents. Proof of residency is required.

Please bring a driver’s license, I.D. card, a current copy of a utility bill or piece of mail for each family receiving a meal to prove residency. No sign-up is required.

Dinners will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. Limit of one dinner per family!

Each meal will include a 12-15 pound turkey and side dishes: stuffing, turkey, gravy, whole kernel corn, green beans, dry black beans, white rice, mixed fruit in juice, cranberry sauce, hot cocoa, cake mix, and frosting.

Brat and Hot Dog Drive Thru Nov. 13

The Leaf River Lions Club will be serving Brat and Hot Dog meals at a free-will donation, drive thru event on Saturday, Nov. 13 at the old Fire Station on Second Street in Leaf River from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Funds from this event will go to the Veteran’s Drop Off Center in Rockford. The Center provides meals, clothing, and other miscellaneous items for homeless veterans.

The Veterans Center provides noon meals Monday thru Friday for the homeless Veterans.

They also have a donated supply of clothing and other miscellaneous items for the Veterans. They have assisted in finding housing and furniture to get them started. The Leaf River Lions Club has helped support the center for the last four years.

azoellner@shawmedia.com OREGON — An Oregon house purchased by Ogle County several years ago was demolished last week.

In 2018, Ogle County Board members voted to purchase 604 W. Washington St. at a cost not to exceed $167,000. At that time, it was the office of the Williams & McCarthy law firm.

The business continued to operate out of the house until earlier this year when longtime attorney Kim Krahenbuhl retired.

Demolition of the house cost approximately $25,000, which was below the expected project cost of $34,000, Ogle County Board member Don Griffin said. Griffin is chairperson of the county board’s Long Range and Strategic Planning Committee.

“When we were getting ready to build the Judicial Center annex or the detention center, we didn’t have the room we needed to build that facility and stage everything we needed to,” he said. “So we bought that lot and the lot to the south of that for staging purposes and a parking lot.”

The eastern side of the 604 property ended up being needed for a retention pond that met building codes and state requirements, he said. He said the retention pond takes up a good share of the property and almost reached the house.

“We did investigate the house, and it was in pretty rough shape all the way around,” Griffin said. “So we, unfortunately, did the demo process.”

The two properties are part of the county’s 50-year plan, he said. The southern most house still has a resident, and the county does not currently have plans to make them move, Griffin said.

The 604 property is being grassed and seeded, and some trees have been planted, he said. There are no other plans for the property at this time, he said.

It’s been a busy time at the Polo Historical Museum

A

couple of weeks ago Linda and I headed to Bryon to Joan who is a doll person. I had one last doll from Annabelle Muench’s collection and Linda had some Madam Alexander dolls.

I decided to take along the Native American dolls from Dale Blough’s collection. Since they were going to go into the display case at the museum, I needed more information on them.

Joan took one look at the Native American dolls and knew exactly what they were and when they were made.

She called them “Skookum Dolls” from the 1950s. She said there were early dolls made and the ones we have did not fall in the category.

From that information I then went into the Internet and found that the early ones were made in 1913. Later in the 1950s and 1960s they were mass produced and placed in gift shops.

None of them were ever made by Native American people. They are most interesting little characters wrapped in colorful blankets. They make a nice addition to our display case.

POLO HISTORY Betty Obendorf Our one display case is filled and now needs identifying little cards before sliding into place. Ted Boddiger has been busy painting the ceiling where it had leaked.

We put on a new roof this summer and do not anticipate any more leakage. Ted also repaired the Native American wall hanging that had a dowel broken. As he explained how he had repaired it with some metal inside, I thought to myself, I could never have done that.

You have to know the correct people for the right job!

We also have been working on Barber Park that was along Eagle Point Road with Buffalo Creek running through it. I think we used to call it “Little Red.” Linda has been working with that project and finding out that this is where all the “old timers” had their gatherings. We are talking big

Last week Michal from the Ogle County Historical Society, Linda,

Kevin Smoot, and myself gathered at the museum to talk about Barber Park. Kevin looks for “treasure in the ground” that helps tell a story of the past.

Kevin showed us what he has found with his metal detector at Barber Park.

Kevin will be giving us a program at the beginning of the year and we will also give you more history on this area.

Recently Kathy Pasch and I met with Patrick and his wife from Dixon.

He is a collector of Civil War artifacts and he also wanted Kathy and I to sign our book he had purchased earlier.

Kathy photographed what he has collected on the 15th Regiment. Some we already had and some we did not have. There is always more history out there. If we ever do another printing of the book, it will be added.

So it has been busy at the museum with people coming and going and soon it will be time to get ready for the holidays. They are coming fast.

EVENTS & ENTERTAINMENT Rock n’ Roll Tribute featuring The Neverly Brothers set for Nov. 6 in Freeport

OREGON — The Oregon High School Theater Department will be performing Bad Auditions by Bad Actors this fall, on Nov. 5, 6, and 7. The show will be held in the OHS auditorium.

Shows on Friday and Saturday will be at 7 p.m., and on Sunday at 2 p.m. The seating will be general admission and tickets will only be available at the door. The doors will open 30 minutes prior to each performance.

Tickets cost $5 for students and $8 for adults.

Bad Auditions by Bad Actors is a comedy written by Ian McWethy, and follows new theater director Carol in her search for a Romeo and Juliet for the theater’s production.

With terrible auditions including modern dancers, cat impersonators, and puppets, Carol struggles to cast the parts, while her clueless assistant director Roger tries to plan his first date. Will she be able to find two good actors in time for rehearsals to start?

“The fall play is a fun and unique experience because it is student-led. It is co-directed by Abigail Rogers and Paige Beauchem, and stage managed by Sophia Stender,” said Zach Hall, OHS choir director. “These students have been in charge of choosing the play, building the set, and planning rehearsals and show dates. These directors and actors have been putting a lot of work into this show since September.”

FREEPORT — The Neverly Brothers will perform at the Masonic Event Center Ballroom on Saturday, Nov. 6, the Downtown Freeport Events and Greater Freeport Partnership said in a press release.

Guests are invited to dance, enjoy drinks and spend time with friends and fellow music lovers.

Doors will open at 6 p.m., with the show beginning at 7 pm. Drinks will be available for purchase.

“The Neverly Brothers are a one-of-akind, high energy stage performance that takes you on a musical tour of the greatest period in rock history from 1955 to 1965. This exciting chapter in music saw the birth, near death, and resurrection of rock n’ roll and the show includes masterpieces made popular by Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, and many more!,” the release said.

The event is hosted as a fundraiser for Downtown Freeport promotions and beautification.

Polo OK’s public comment policy, talks parking ban Prohibiting parking on Illinois 26 could be voted on at Nov. 15 meeting

azoellner@shawmedia.com POLO — Going forward, anyone interested in addressing the Polo City Council during its meetings will have to fill out a public comment form prior to the start of a meeting.

City council members on Nov. 1 voted 4-1 to approve a public comment policy. Alderperson Beth Sundman cast the lone no vote.

Requiring citizens to notify the city in advance that they wish to speak and what stance they wish to advocate for “seemed like a little step too far,” Sundman said on Nov. 2.

“The thing is to always increase access [for the public], not restrict it,” she said.

The policy limits public comment to a maximum of 30 minutes and 10 speakers. Each speaker will have a maximum of three minutes to address the council and must first state their

name and address for the record, the subject on which they wish to speak and whom, if anyone, they represent.

According to the policy, if more than 10 people wish to address the council, the mayor will randomly select 10 speakers, with the exception that preference will be given to city of Polo residents over nonresidents.

The policy will go into effect beginning with the council’s Nov. 15 meeting.

At that meeting, council members will hold a second reading of an ordinance prohibiting parking on Division Avenue, which is the name of Illinois Route 26 within city limits.

The topic was discussed at length during the council’s Oct. 4 meeting. At that time, council members directed city attorney M. Thomas Suits to draft an ordinance prohibiting parking between Colden and Locus streets.

The ordinance — which requires two readings — was not presented at the Oct. 18 meeting. Mayor Doug Knapp said he first wanted to send letters to each resident and property owner on Division Avenue letting them know of the proposed change.

During the Oct. 4 meeting, an angry citizen called for notices to be sent before any decisions were made.

The letters, which were mailed out on Oct. 26, stated that the city was considering removing parking along the entirety of Division Avenue — not just the two blocks between Colden and Locus streets.

When the ordinance was presented to the city council on Nov. 1, it was written to prohibit parking on both sides of Division Avenue from Judson

and Wilson streets to Hillside Drive.

Sundman pointed out the inconsistency with the consensus of the council on Oct. 4 and what was presented Nov. 1.

Knapp and Suits both responded during the meeting, saying their recollection was that it was the entirety of Division Avenue.

On an audio recording of the Oct. 4 meeting, Knapp can be heard saying, “Let’s try this two-block area first,” in reference to the area between Colden and Locus streets. That statement was made near the end of discussion on the topic.

In a Nov. 2 phone interview, Knapp said that he thinks the change in where parking would be prohibited happened “inadvertently” between Oct. 4 and Nov. 1.

“I’m not sure that it got done exactly right,” Knapp said. “I don’t think that’s what we did.”

When asked what he thought happened, Knapp said, “I’m not really sure about that. I’m not at liberty to say.”

When asked if there would be any changes made to the ordinance prior to its second reading to have it reflect the Oct. 4 consensus, Knapp said, “I’m not sure about that part of it.”

‘It’s my DNA’ says Casey’s manager who will retire this week

azoellner@shawmedia.com POLO — The staff and customers of Casey’s General Store in Polo are a family, with members having come and gone over the years. Through it all, the store’s unofficial matriarch, Carol Behrendt remained.

“It’s my DNA,” Behrendt said of her 35-year career at Casey’s. “It’s part of me.”

But now, Behrendt is ready to move on. The 63-year-old Polo resident plans to retire from her position as store manager on Nov. 6.

“I will be doing some part-time stuff, but here it’s going to be very part-time,” Behrendt said. “Just enough to help her [the new manager] get going. As soon as she’s good and the store’s good, then I’ll be sliding out.”

After a hard-fought 22-14 win over Galena in the first round of the 1A playoffs on Oct. 29, Forreston quarterback Logan Dyson and running back Matthew Beltran immediately approached Ethan Hefel of the Pirates and consoled him.

Hefel singlehandedly brought his team to near victory with a combined 200 yards passing and running of the 230 yards gained by Galena.

“I told him he’s such a great player and humble too,” Beltran said. “We told him to keep his head up. He’s has a bright future.”

It was Hefel who gave No. 14 seed Galena (5-5) life after a dismal start. A misplay on a booming kickoff by Ethan Scaman resulted in Galena taking possession at the 1-yard line. A 3-and-out and 11-yard punt against a strong wind gave Forreston (8-2) the ball at the 18-yard line.

Based in Ankeny, Iowa, Casey’s was founded in 1968, and today is the third-largest convenience store retailer and fifth-largest pizza chain in the U.S. It has more than 2,300 locations.

There were 623 Casey’s when she was hired in November 1986, Behrendt said.

“I could call to the corporate office and not identify myself and they would know who I was,” she said. “They’d call me by my first name, which is really cool.”

Behrendt started at the Polo Casey’s about 18 months after the store opened.

She worked first as a doughnut maker, then cashier and then a pizza maker.

“After a year-and-a-half, my supervisor came to me and asked me if I wanted to be the manager,” Behrendt said. “I said, ‘No.’ Then my husband and she and I all had a meeting and talked about the reservations I had

Things have changed since then, be it the doughnut case growing in size, the addition of a canopy over the gas pumps or a wider variety of food being offered, Behrendt said.

There’s so much more technology involved, she said. They no longer do their accounting with a calculator and

Even the store itself has changed, having undergone three renovations during Behrendt’s time there. They’re still awaiting a fourth that will update the store to match Casey’s newer building style, she said.

“We call ourselves the ‘vintage store,’” Behrendt said.

Seven employees used to be enough to run the store, but that’s not the case anymore, she said. Currently, the store employs 21 people, she said.

Her staff are part of what’s kept her at Casey’s so long, Behrendt said.

“The people, the customers, interacting with the other team members — we become like family, and some come and go,” she said.

“There were some days when it was tough, when I wanted to leave, but I just didn’t,” Behrendt added. “I think it’s because I didn’t want to leave the rest of the store employees, and there was enough that I liked about the job that I wanted to stay.”

The chance to teach people — especially young adults — is one thing she loves about her job, she said.

“They get to become part of the team, kind of like a puzzle that fits together,” Behrendt said.

Brock Soltow opened the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown run, then West Prairie returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards for a score to tie the game 8-8.

But the Marcos answered with the next 58 points to advance to the second round. They will host Milford-Cissna Park at 2 p.m. Saturday in a rematch of the 2019 8-man state championship game.

“Our defense was playing better than the last time,” said Freed, whose team gave up 52 points in an earlier loss to Forreston.

With two would-be tacklers on him, Hefel was able to convert on fourth down to keep the next drive alive. The Pirates got into the red zone, but a pass defense by Devonte King-Black stymied the drive.

In the second half, Forreston had to punt against the wind on its first drive and Galena was able to take advantage.

Hefel found Quick for 14 yards and on the next play hit Brady Schemehorn with a 45-yard scoring bomb, with Jacob Heisler delivering a devastating downfield block. The PAT pass attempt was incomplete and Forreston clung to a 16-14 lead.

It was Hefel’s 16 th TD pass of the year to go against only one INT. Taking over at the 20 following a touchback, it was Kaleb Sanders running for 27 yards and Fiorello tight-roping the sideline with 36-yard gain on second-and-20.

Wanting to make it a 2-possession game, Forreston faced a fourth-andgoal at the 1-yard line. Last week against Lena-Winslow in the same scenario, it was Beltran crashing over on second man through for the winning touchdown.

Freed must have intently studied game film, as his defense stuffed Bel-

tran for no gain on the identical play.

“We got to finish plays,” Janicke said. “We shouldn’t be putting ourselves in that situation anyway.”

The score stayed 16-14 heading into the fourth quarter with both teams trading punts. Forreston had an excellent opportunity to put the game away, but a roughing the passer penalty

caught a 16-yard touchdown pass.

Polo (10-0) wowed the excited home fans from the start. After West Prairie (4-6) tied the score, Merdian threw the TD pass to Queckboerner, then Soltow added a 48-yard scoring scamper.

In the second quarter, Grenoble had a 1-yard plunge, then Merdian hit Sankey with a scoring strike from 22 yards out. Soltow added a 24-yard touchdown run, then Cayden Webster returned a fumble 33 yards for a score.

Grenoble’s 29-yard TD run capped the scoring in the first half and gave the Marcos a 60-8 lead at the break.

“With the year off last year, obviously being able to bring playoff football back was exciting, and our fans were great,” Alston said. “A lot of these kids have never been through that before, and it was a neat experience in a great atmosphere on a beautiful afternoon. It was a lot of fun.”

Dewey ran in from 5 yards out for the lone touchdown in the third quarter, and West Prairie added a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to cap the scoring.

Beltran’s PAT attempt came up inches short and Hefel and company would have one last shot to tie the game with six minutes left.

A pass interference against Forreston and a 16-yard run by Hefel, who broke three tackles, put the ball in Cardinal territory. On fourth-and-5, Hefel had a rare bad pass and Forreston was able to run the clock out.

“We need to clean up some things out there,” Janicke said. “I don’t think we were complacent after our big win last week. We just allowed Galena to stay in the game.”

As usual, the high point for Forreston was the 409 yards gained rushing, with Fiorello, Sanders, King-Black, Johnson, Beltran and Nelson with all over 45 yards or more.

Playoff games? One good, the others?... not so much

W

ith the first round of the football playoffs in the book, one thing stands out – there were some really pathetic games between the haves and havenots.

Whether it was 8-man or the IHSA series, there were several complete blowouts. Here in Ogle County, Byron and Stillman Valley destroyed woeful Chicago Public League opponents.

Not only that, but both Chicago schools arrived barely minutes before kickoff. In watching game clips, neither team had any business in the playoffs.

The same applied with Polo putting 60 points in the first half on Sciota West Prairie. For anyone that thinks every team in Illinois should be allowed in the playoffs like the IHSA does for basketball, forget it.

Having half the schools allowed in is more than enough. Occasionally, there are 5-4 teams that make a serious run for a state title.

The most bizarre game was in 6A, where Springfield beat Peoria 94-72, erasing the previous IHSA record of a 70-63 score. Springfield had a 3-and-out

At least I got to see a good game and that was Galena at Forreston on Friday night. It was classic small-school football by two quality opponents.

It’s too bad the 1A bracket has so many good NUIC teams bunched together, almost making it an informal state championship in itself.

Could this week’s Forreston-Lena-Winslow be exactly that?

As a son growing up under a head football coach, I sense that Keynon Janicke and Ric Arand will be doing exactly what my dad used to during the week of a big game. That was devoting inordinate hours how to beat the opponent.

How do you even concentrate on regular school duties with so much at stake? Forgive these guys a bit if they

aren’t operating with 100 percent focus in the classroom.

Besides football, it was a pleasure to cover the 1A cross-country sectional at Oregon’s Park West. Enjoying a brisk sunny breeze while standing in at the edge of a freshly picked cornfield conversing with buddy Bruce Johnson of Winnebago, life couldn’t have been better.

There was a sense of complete relaxation watching runners come by with hundreds of fans cheering and also enjoying the beautiful autumn scenery all around.

I thought of how intense the sideline of the Forreston football game was the night before. A cross-country race is just as intense, but the feel as a spectator is different.

I learned from Bruce that long-time ‘Bago coach Roger Schmidt passed away.

Did you know that coach Schmidt made a splash in Leaf River in 1959?

He took a young Steve Newcomer and molded him into a state champion in the 1-mile run. Even more remarkable was the fact Illinois only had a 1-class system for track and tiny Leaf

River produced a champion over the juggernaughts from the Chicago area.

Newcomer went on to be a dentist in Rockford and will be forever remembered in Ogle County sports lore. As will Schmidt, who coached until 90 years of age.

A fun thing about a cross country meet is the ability for social interaction.

I also learned from Don Reece that he is retiring from Polo after 33 years and 23 years as golf coach. What a nice guy Don has always been.

Jeff Grobe was watching a family member run for Polo and shared with me that he too is retiring from coaching at Polo after 32 years.

Jeff started in the middle school and worked his way up the varsity.

“The hardest thing will be going to the first game,” said Grobe, who will have a granddaughter playing.

A sportsmanship award need to be handed out to Carson Jones of Polo.

After finishing his race, Carson stayed around until every runner was finished and greeted them at the finish line with a fist bump or hand shake.

Polo Marco blue and gold will be at the state cross country meet this year after a 15-year absence.

Carson Jones finished 10th at the Oregon Sectional on Oct. 30 in 17:59 to qualify for this Saturday’s state meet in East Peoria.

“I started slow and powered up the big hill,” Jones said. “I caught people that went out to fast.”

Jones is the first state qualifier for Polo since the 2006 team advanced.

“Making it has always been a thought in my head,” said Jones, a junior. “It will be good experience to go to state for next year.”

Freshman Ella Dannhorn was an individual qualifier with a time of 21:09, good for 22nd overall. She is the first state qualifier from Oregon since freshman Leah Watters did it in 2017.

“I felt like I had an advantage knowing the course, but felt awful running” said Dannhorn, who grabbed that final 10 th spot. “Maybe that was nerves.

What helped was passing people on the final hill.”

Polo finished in 20th place as a team with 456 points. Running were Bekah Ziegler, Kamryn Stocking, Courtney Grobe, Ramsie Grenoble, Ellia Escobar and Leanna Diaz.

“They’re all dual athletes,” Marco coach tony Hardin said. “We have two volleyball players, a golfer, cheerleader and competitive dancer.

They’re up at 6 am practicing when everyone else is in bed.”

It was a season of firsts for the Amboy/LaMoille/Ohio’s boys cross-country team. First it was winning its own prestigious Columbus Day Invite for first time in 48 years and

With senior Brock Loftus of Ohio taking first place, the Clippers finished third overall with 100 points, behind Rockford Christian and Riverdale.

Sterling Newman and Erie-Prophetstown also qualified teams to Detweiller Park.

Loftus made up a 15-meter deficit and outkicked Tommy Murray of Riverdale for a 16:19 to 16:22 win. The first mile it was shoulder to shoulder, with Loftus hoping to upend Murray for the first time in five tries this season.

“It was my best race, especially coming on at the end to win,” Loftus

said. “I have a big goal to get top 10 at state.”

Joining Loftus in the top 10 at sectional were Kyler McNinch (17:13) in seventh and Ian Eller (17:18) in ninth.

Rounding out the scoring was Charlie Dickinson in 33rd and Wyatt Lundquist in 61st.

“We came in here as freshmen and wanted to build a program,” Loftus said. “I hope this lasts. We’ve got some good freshmen.”

That build started with senior state qualifier Tom Schmaberger and coach Bob Hallberg three years ago. Taking over was a Princeton high-school football player turned distance coach Mike

Robinson.

“These guys didn’t hold anything back,” Robinson said. “Two years ago, we missed by 15 points and last year we were third at sectional, but didn’t have a state meet (Covid). It’s going to be exciting to finally run at Detweiller.”

Newman had a steady group from 21st to 53rd place to score 158 and take fifth comfortably. Those runners were Griffin Moran, Lucas Schaab, Lucas Simpson, Ken Boesen and Kaden Welty.

Forreston, Oregon, Polo all fall at their regionals

Forreston fell to Sterling Newman 21-25, 25-15, 25-23 in the semifinals of the Class 1A Eastland Regional.

Forreston led the whole way in the first set, with Newman fighting back to within 20-19 on a Kennedy Rowzee block, two Katie Grennan aces, and a back-row kill by Jessalin Johns.

But the Cardinals regained control with a pair of kills by Jaiden Schneiderman and a final tip-kill by Brooke Boettner.

The Comets jumped out quickly in the second set to lead 14-8.

The third set saw two early service errors by Newman to give Forreston the lead. The teams then traded points for much of the set, with Newman trailing by two or three most of the way.

Down 19-16, Newman tied it at 19-19.

Another kill and two errors by Forreston made it 22-19 Newman.

The Cardinals battled back to tie the score at 23, but after a Comet timeout, Newman notched a kill and a Forreston hit went long to give Newman the win.

For the last several years, Rock Falls has finished either under the cut for state or right ahead of it. This year was no exception, as they had the hard-luck finish of seventh place with 263 points. Erie-Prophetstown took the sixth and final spot with 248.

It’s been 10 years since E-P has been to state and that was a talking point on the way to Oregon.

Schneiderman led Forreston with 10 kills, Rylee Broshous had six kills, and Brooke Boettner had 13 assists and four kills.

“Our goal was to serve pretty aggressively against them to get them out of system so they couldn’t get to their powerhouse hitters, and I think we did a decent job of that,” Forreston coach Shannon Williams said. “We knew their hitters were going to get their kills, but we just needed to ite Winnebago (26), Seneca (123) and Mercer County (136). Leading the way was Tayli Hultin with a 20:07.

“It was weird running with Winnebago,” Hultin said. “The first mile seemed slow. Then they speeded it up to where they’re supposed to be. Coach said it’s going to be the ‘Bago show, but use it to make you better. This was about keeping up with them.”

As if Winnebago didn’t need an incentive, they had one in the death this week of Hall-of-Fame coach Roger Schmidt, the architect of the stellar program.

“I ran for him when I was in junior high,” Winnebago coach Joe Erb said.

“The girls were running for him today.”

Oregon and Polo both fell at their respective regionals at the Mendota 2A regional, Oregon advanced to the final with a 24-26, 25-21, 26-24 win over Mendota on Oct. 27.

A back-and-forth first set saw

fourth-seeded Mendota finally pull out to a 17-12 lead, only to see Oregon tie it 20-20 on the service of Aubrey Point and a pair of kills from Liz Mois. Oregon then took a 24-23 lead on kills from Mois and Sophie Stender, before Mendota won the set with a pair of aces from Lauren Martin.

The second set saw the Trojans take a 15-11 lead, then Ava Wight’s serve and a Kenna Wubbena kill helped Oregon cut it to 19-17. Cass Aylward then served seven straight points, with the run including an ace and a pair of kills

by Jenae Bothe, to force a third set.

The final set was tied 8-8 before Oregon slowly pulled away for a 22-17 lead. Mendota fought back to tie it 23-23 and 24-24, but Bothe finished it off with a kill and a block to send the Hawks to the regional final.

In the regional final, Rockford Lutheran defeated Oregon 25-17, 25-19.

to tractor pulls and trips to Louisville, KY with the guys. He was a member of the Milledgeville Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Sally; his sons, James (Aimee) Fuller of Lyndon and Richard (Karina) Fuller of TN; his daughter, Sherrie (Daryl) Beers of Polo; his stepdaughters, Julie and Missy; his stepson, Mike; his five grandchildren, Megan Beers, Dylan Beers, Alexis (Tanner) Grobe, Natalie (Travis) Mills and Evan Fritz; three great-grandchildren, Liam, Moriah and Brantley; and several stepgrandchildren.

He was born on March 9, 1924 in Chicago, the son of George and Anna (Kopka) Styzinski. He served in the US Navy during WW II. He married Cathryn Detweiler on September 4, 1948.

Richard began his working carrier at Detrem

Bottle Gas and later with Thermogas. After his retirement, he became a rural mail carrier.

Richard was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Polo and a longtime member of the Polo Lions Club. As his children were growing up, he coached Little League and played in the Merchants League in Polo. Richard was an avid gardener and had enjoyed playing tennis.

Survivors include his wife, Cathryn; his children: Lyn (Leonard) Greenberg, R. Mark (Ann) Styczynski, Neil (Joan) Styczynski, Jan (Lyle) Hagen and Kris (Brent) Hoover; his sister, Eleanor Moesch; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

A gathering of friends and family will take place on Saturday, November 13, 2021 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the McDonald Funeral Home & Crematory in Rock Falls. A memorial service will follow at 1:30 p.m. with the Reverend Bruce Ludeke officiating.

Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity: Oct. 26 Aniyah Jordan, 18, of Robbins, was arrested at 6:22 a.m. by deputies on Interstate 39 at mile-marker 111 for driving while license suspended. Jordan also received citations for no insurance and speeding. Jordan was given an I-Bond for the citations and will appear in court at a later date.

At approximately 4:40 p.m., deputies responded to the 300 block of Main Street in Forreston in reference to a domestic complaint. After an investigation, deputies arrested Matthew J. Peace, 56, of Freeport, for domestic battery. Peace was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Lucas Tuttle, 35, of Byron, was arrested at 11:50 p.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop in the 7000 block of North River Road.

Tuttle also was cited for an inoperable registration light. Tuttle was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Oct. 27 At approximately 2:09 a.m., deputies responded to the 12000 block of North Baileyville Road in reference to a property damage-only crash involving minor damage.

After an investigation, Michael Sides, 56, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Sides also was cited for improper use of registration, unsafe backing on the roadway, illegal transportation of alcohol and unlawful possession of cannabis (driver). Sides was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

At approximately 9:23 a.m., deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash in the 17000 block of Illinois Route 38 involving a Chevrolet sedan and Freightliner tank truck.

The driver of the Chevrolet, Christine Hughes, 45, of Rochelle, struck the Freightliner as it was turning. Hughes was transported to Rochelle Community Hospital for minor injuries. Hughes was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Oct. 28 Jacob Quade, 29, of Rochelle, was arrested for no valid drivers license after deputies investigated a vehicle stalled in the roadway of the 8000 block of Illinois Route 64. Quade was given an I-Bond on the scene and released with a pending court date.

Oct. 29 Andrew Rodriguez, 20, of Rockford, was arrested at 1:49 p.m. in the 18000 block of Illinois Route 64 for no valid driver’s license.

Rodriguez was released on the scene with a scheduled court appearance of Dec. 3 at 9 a.m.

At approximately 2:03 p.m., deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash in the 1500 block of North Union Road involving a 2013 Buick Regal operated by Kym M. Bernard, 57, of Polo. After an investigation, deputies found that Bernard was traveling north on North Union Road when the vehicle veered to the left side of the roadway striking a culvert and causing the vehicle to overturn.

It landed off the west side of the road.

Bernard was transported by the Polo Fire Protection District to KSB Hospital for minor injuries. Bernard was cited for improper traffic lane usage and seat belt required.

Oct. 31 Alexsandro Cervantes Huerta, 20, of Rockford, was arrested at 12:22 a.m. for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop in the 1000 block of Illinois Route 2. Cervantes Huerta was released from the scene on an I-Bond and given a future court date.

Nov. 1 Deprise Nolton, 29, of Montgomery, was arrested for driving with no valid license after deputies stopped Nolton on Interstate 39 near Monroe Center for speeding. Nolton was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Darius D. Triplett, 30, of Rockford, was arrested at 7:28 p.m. for driving on a revoked license after a traffic stop at the intersection of Illinois Route 72 and Pecatonica Road. Triplett also was cited for operating uninsured motor vehicle and unsafe backing on a roadway. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

At 10:51 p.m., deputies were dispatched to a one-vehicle crash in the 8000 block of Illinois Route 251. After an investigation, deputies learned that a maroon Chevy SUV driven by Kari Schmidt, 38, of Cherry Valley, was southbound and left the west side of the roadway. The SUV traveled in the ditch and struck a field entrance, after which the vehicle overturned and came to a rest on the roof. Schmidt was arrested for driving under the influence and cited for improper lane usage and not driving on the right side of the lane. Schmidt was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Oct. 15 At 8:21 a.m., police responded to a two-vehicle traffic crash in the post office parking lot, located at 500 W. Washington Street where a 2004 Ford driven by Robert G. Bacon, 74, of Mt. Morris, struck a parked 2011 Chevrolet belonging to Allison J. Geuther, 46, of Amboy. No citations were issued.

Oct. 25 Michael D. Ramsey, 30, of Oregon, was arrested at 11:16 p.m. on an outstanding DeKalb County warrant for larceny/retail theft. Ramsey was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Oct. 21 Lucky Kelly, 25, of Oregon, was arrested at 7:37 p.m. for driving while license suspended. Kelly was also issued a citation for operating a vehicle with no insurance. Kelly was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Kenneth L. Blake, Jr., 40, of Mt. Morris, was arrested at 2:35 a.m. for driving while license revoked. Blake, Jr., was transported to the Ogle County Jail. This violation occurred in the 300 block of W. Washington Street.

At 9:09 a.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the 800 block of S. 7th Street where a 2019 Dodge driven by Kevin G. Christensen, 61, of Oregon, struck a 2016 Mack garbage truck driven by Brent D. Pearson, 32, of Stillman Valley. No citations were issued.

At 11 a.m., police issued one 14-year-old male juvenile of Mt. Morris a city citation for possessing tobacco products and/or alternative nicotine products. This violation occurred in the Oregon High School.

Oct. 28 At 3:38 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the Casey’s General Store parking lot, 901 W. Washington Street, involving a 2010 Ford driven by Elizabeth A. Ruter, 16, of Mt. Morris, and a 2007 Dodge driven by Mikkie J. Perrine, 38, of Chana. No citations were issued.

At 11 a.m., police issued one 15-year-old male juvenile of Mt. Morris a city citation for possessing tobacco products and/or alternative nicotine products. This violation occurred in the Oregon High School.

At 3:40 p.m., police issued one 17-year-old male juvenile of Mt. Morris a city citation for possessing tobacco products and/or alternative nicotine products. This violation occurred in the Oregon High School.

Haley M. Mayoral, 28, of Dixon, was issued a citation at 5:48 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred in the 600 block of S. 4th Street.

Oct. 29 James J. Ort, Jr., 25, of Roscoe, was arrested at 7:37 p.m. for no valid driver’s license. He was transported to the Ogle

County Jail. This violation occurred in the 400 block of Illinois Street.

Oct. 30 Kamaryn B. Lappin, 40, of Dixon, was issued a citation at 3:31 p.m. for speeding, 55 mph in a 35 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 1300 block of Pines Road.

Mercedes A. Cox, 19, of Rockford, was arrested at 11:13 p.m. for improper container.

Cox was also issued a citation for illegal transportation of alcohol as a juvenile. Cox was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

These violations occurred at the intersection of 5th and Phelps Streets.

Oct. 31 Clarissa E. Clark, 38, of Rockford, was arrested at 12:25 a.m. on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

Clark was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

At 11:45 a.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the 3rd Street municipal parking lot, 117 S. 3rd Street, involving a 2007 Toyota driven by Kennedy P. Roth, 17, of Byron, and a 2021 Ford driven

by Jack D. Williamson, 21, of Fulton. No citations were issued.

At 7:14 p.m., Oregon Police arrested Austin T.M. Riley, 28, of Sycamore, was arrested on an outstanding DeKalb County warrant for failure to appear. Riley was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Twenty-one parking tickets and 14 verbal warnings were issued Oct. 18-31.
