Council reduces fees in effort to encourage building of new homes in city limits

azoellner@shawmedia.com In a bid to incentivize construction of new housing in Oregon, city council members officially eliminated the impact fee and lowered other associated costs.

“Why incentives? We feel more housing is critical to the success of our city, parks and schools,” Mayor Ken Williams said.

“Incentives do work and are common throughout our area.”

On Tuesday, council members unanimously voted to reduce water and sewer connection costs from $1,500 to $250 each and eliminate the $641 city impact fee for fiscal 2023; the water meter cost will remain at $300 or actual cost, whichever is higher.

An impact fee is a one-time fee imposed by municipalities on developers to help fund the cost of additional infrastructure, public services or transportation facilities a new development necessitates.

Although the vote officially reduced the fees, the city has been charging the new rates for the past five or six years, Williams said.

“We haven’t done impact fees at the full amount, and the reason is to encourage new homes,” he said. “New homes bring in additional families, stuff for the park district, for the schools for enrollment. It’s

obviously a good thing to keep the housing going and give incentives to that. Doesn’t matter whether the house goes into Stonegate Ridge or between two homes downtown.”

Rochelle and Byron both offer incentives to Ken Williams developers, which means Oregon is competing against them to be the best place to build, Williams said.

Council members also OK’d waiving the $1,900 lien usually imposed on new construction in the Stonegate Ridge subdivision – which is within the intersection of Illinois Route 64 and Daysville Road – for the next 10 houses built there.

“The purpose of that money [the $1,900 lien] is to help recoup the cost of the construction of the utilities that we put in back in 2017,” Williams said. “We have recouped those costs. Those costs have not been paid.

We’ve recovered the money through a combination of receiving money from utilities.”

However, that lien agreement ends in 2026, he said. One reason to waive the lien for the next 10 homes is because the city gets about $5,000 when a gas meter is installed and $1,000 when an electric meter

is put in, Williams said.

“If we could encourage more homes to go in, we get $6,000 every time one goes in,” he said.

“That more than offsets the $1,900 that’s out there. So we’re hoping that this incentivizes the builders to build more.”

Stonegate’s developers thus far only are building homes that have a buyer in place, Williams explained. They aren’t doing any building based on the speculation that someone will buy it.

“I would love to try to encourage our subdivisions to do a few spec homes because I know that sells quickly,” he said.

“My personal feeling is, if they did it, they would not be at much risk of just sitting unsold. But that’s not for me to decide. So perhaps if we have this, waiving the $1,900fee, that’s the additional push that’s needed.”

Williams said that he plans to speak with the Stonegate developers following approval of the fee reductions and lien waiver to try to push the building of homes a little faster.

“We need the homes,” he said.

The Trestle Ridge townhouse development is not impacted by the change, Williams said. That development has a separate tax increment financing district agreement.

BRIEFS City to flush fire hydrants

The City of Oregon will be flushing fire hydrants on the following dates: May 9-13, north of Illinois 64 and east of the Rock River and May 16-20, south of Illinois 64 The flushing is a requirement of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and a recommendation of the Insurance Services Office.

City water may be rusty during this operation and residents should refrain from washing clothes during the hours of the flushing operation.

At night if your water is rusty, allow the cold water to run until it clears up.

Oregon FFA plant sale continues

The Oregon FFA chapter’s plant sale is underway at the Oregon High School greenhouse, located just south of the high school.

The greenhouse is open weekends from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and weekdays by appointment, while supplies last.

Eagle’s Nest Art Group workshop

The Eagle’s Nest Art Group will be offering a beginners workshop in the art of glasswork on Saturday, May 28, from 9 a.m. to noon at its Conover Square Mall second-floor studio, 201 N. Third St., Oregon.

The workshop will be open to the public and membership to the Eagle’s Nest Art Group is not required.

Participants in the workshop will be guided by glass artist Valerie Butcher, who will explain the tools and glass types needed to create a 4X4 inch Trinket Tray.

Participants must wear closed-toed shoes since they will be nipping, grinding and handling small pieces of glass.

The workshop will cost $30 to attend and will include all materials, tools and the double “firing” of each tray. Participation in the workshop will be limited so that participants will receive individual attention.

Electronic recycling May 21

The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD) will be holding a residential electronic recycling event on Saturday, May 21, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the County Annex Building at 909 Pines Road in Oregon.

There will be no Friday electronics recycling event this month. The electronics recycling event for June will be held Friday, June 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A free permit is required in advance to attend this recycling event. Permits are limited and must be requested by 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 19.

To obtain a permit call the OCSWMD at 815-732-4020 or email the department at solidwaste@oglecounty.org and provide your name address, phone number and email address.

Permits are limited to one per household per month, and allow up to seven large items to be brought in for recycling.

The Ogle County Fair Board is seeking contestants for its 2022 Queen Pageant.

The pageant includes four divisions: Little Miss & Mr., Junior Miss, Young Miss and Miss Ogle County Fair. It will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 3, opening night of the fair, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The 168th Ogle County Fair will be held from Wednesday, Aug. 3, through Sunday, Aug. 7, at the fairgrounds, 1440 N. Limekiln Road, one mile west of Oregon just north of Illinois 64.

The Little Miss & Mr. Division is open to children

ages 5-8, Junior is for ages 9-12, Young is for ages 13-15, and Miss is open to ages 16-21.

An informational meeting for all contestants will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, June 6, at the fairgrounds.

Winners in each division will participate in events at this year’s fair and throughout the coming year.

PAG performances in May at Pinecrest Grove Theatre The Performing Arts Guide will present “The One-Act Play That Goes Wrong” May 13-15 and May 20-22 at the Pinecrest Grove Theatre.

Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday performances are at 2 p.m.

The play is about a fictitious Cornley University Drama Society that has received a substantial bequest and is putting on a performance of The Murder at Haversham Manor – a 1920s murder mystery play.

The script was written by the fictitious Susie H. K. Brideswell.

During the performance, a play within a play, a plethora of disasters befall the cast, including doors sticking, props falling from the walls, and floors collapsing. Cast members are seen misplacing props, forgetting lines, etc.

The Performing Arts Guild (PAG) has been in existence for 40 years in Northern Illinois offering seasonal musicals, plays and special events relating to the creative arts.

In 1981, the Performing Arts Guild was born and since its inception, has consistently offered annual seasons.

Source of Drinking Water The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity.

Contaminants that may be present in source water include: - Microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife.

- Inorganic contaminants, such as salts and metals, which can be naturally-occurring or result from urban storm water runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming.

- Pesticides and herbicides, which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, urban storm water runoff, and residential uses.

- Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can also come from gas stations, urban storm water runoff, and septic systems.

- Radioactive contaminants, which can be naturally-occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities.

Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the EPAs Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.

In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, EPA prescribes regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. FDA regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health.

Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population.

Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. EPA/ CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800426-4791).

If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. We cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

Source of Water: POLO Based on information obtained in a Well Site Survey published in 1994 by the Illinois EPA, several potential sources are located within 1,500 feet of the wells.

The Illinois EPA has determined that the Polo Community Water Supply’s source water is not suspectibile to contamination. This determination is based on a number of criteria including; monitoring conducted at the wells; monitoring conducted at the entry point to the distribution system; and available hydrogeologic data on the wells.Furthermore, in anticipation of the U.S. EPA’s proposed Ground Water Rule, the Illinois EPA has determined that the Polo Community Water Supply is not vulnerable to viral contamination. This determination is based upon the evaluation of the following criteria during the Vulnerability Waiver Process: the community’s wells are properly constructed with sound integrity and proper siting conditions; a hydraulic barrier exists which should prevent pathogen movement; all potential routes and sanitary defects have been mitigated such that the source water is adequately protected; monitoring data did not indicate a history of disease outbreak; and the sanitary survey of the water supply did not indicate a viral contamination threat. Because the community’s wells are constructed in a confined aquifer, which should prevent the movement of pathogens into the wells, well hydraulics were not considered to be a significant factor in the susceptibility determination. Hence, well hydraulics were not evaluated for this system ground water supply.

Oregon High School’s Class of 1962 is planning its 60th reunion for Saturday, June 11, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Ogle County Brewery in downtown Oregon.

Tractor jamboree May 14

AJ’s Tractor Jamboree is slated for Saturday, May 14, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1675 S. Columbian Road, Oregon.

The event will include garden tractor plowing, rope making, parade, swap meet, tractor games and 4-H auction.

Loader tractors will be featured at this year’s event.

Admission is $10 per person. All proceeds from the event will go to the Blackhawk Crossing 4H Club.

Chana School Museum sale June 3-4

The Chana School Foundation will have its 24th Annual Rummage Sale at the Oregon Coliseum in the lower level on Friday, June 3, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, June 4, from 8 a.m. to noon.

Proceeds from the sale are used to support the 1883 Chana School Museum.

The Chana School is the only two-room wooden schoolhouse in Illinois on the National Register of Historical Places.

Church to host blood drive

The Chana United Methodist Church, 606 Main St. in Chana, is hosting a Community Blood Drive on Wednesday, May 25.

Staff from the Rock River Valley Blood Center will draw blood between 2 to 6 p.m. Appointments are preferred but walk-ins are welcomed. If you are 17 years old [16 with parental consent], weigh at least 110 pounds and are in good general health you should be eligible to donate blood.

One in three people will need blood and you never know when you or someone you love might be the one.

The Rock River Valley Blood Center is the sole supplier of blood and related services to OSF Saint Anthony, Rockford Memorial, Swedish American, Swedish American Medical Center, and Rochelle Community Hospitals among others.

Zephyr ran for 36 years, stopped by Oregon Depot

By OTTO DICK The Twin Cities Zephyr was a streamlined passenger train on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad running between Chicago and the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota.

Trains went west from Chicago passing by the Oregon Depot to the Mississippi River and along that river to St. Paul, Minnesota.

The first two train-sets on this route numbered 1901 and 1902 made a trial run April 21, 1935, in 5 hours and 41 minutes, an average of 77.65 mph.

These train-sets were too small so a second pair of six train-sets were ordered as replacements.

The second train-set entered service Dec. 18, 1936. These train-sets were permanently coupled together.

Thus additional cars were not an option.

At first this train-set made a oneway trip each day. In July 1935, each train-set traveled a round-trip each day. Later, five passenger trains traveled between Chicago and the Twin Cities. Four of these were during the daylight hours

Following the three and six trainsets, individual Zephyr cars were coupled to separate streamlined engines.

Each train consisted of a baggage-club car, four dome coaches, a diner and a dome-parlor-observation car that included a private drawing room with five seats.

The Twin Cities Zephyrs ran for 36 years until 1971 when Amtrak took over most intercity passenger trains in the United States.

We have at the Oregon Depot several train schedules showing their arrival times at the depot.

Today we have the Zephyr Subdivision which Richard Rhoads’ grandfather established, so the Zephyr name still lives in Oregon and Rich, Chris Martin and Roger Cain are working on bringing a dome car from the Twin Cities Zephyr to the Oregon Depot Yard.

When it arrives, it will need a lot of work. This Zephyr Car will be a grand addition to the Oregon Depot and viewing stand.

READING MATTERS

This month’s column pays tribute to a reading specialist from the Oregon School District, Myrna Hart, who taught in Oregon for 33 years. She passed away on March 31 of this year.

Myrna was a fifth grade teacher for six years. When she earned her master’s degree in reading instruction from Northern Illinois University, she became a reading specialist and then worked with kindergarten through third grade students for 27 years in that role. Myrna certainly knew the importance of literacy in the lives of her students and spent those years helping students build their literacy skills.

As a colleague, Myrna also worked with other reading teachers in the district as well as with classroom teachers and other staff. She often collaborated and brainstormed with them, trying to find the best books and the best ways to help young readers, especially for those who struggled in learning to read.

Another focus of Myrna’s was helping her students develop a love for reading. For those for whom learning to read is hard this can be a difficult task. Myrna was expert at finding just

In her memory, friends, colleagues and family have contributed funds to help purchase new books for the current reading specialists at Oregon Elementary School. A donation of $4,050 was presented to them on Monday, May 2, by Myrna’s son Ryan Hart.

You might wonder why so many books might be needed to teach students how to read. Teaching early readers requires books with controlled vocabulary. Initially they learn to sound out, read and write simple three letter words with a consonant-vowel-consonant pattern (such as hat, big, fun). In order to grow as readers, they need to read lots of books that have

Source of Drinking Water The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity.

Contaminants that may be present in source water include: - Microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife.

- Inorganic contaminants, such as salts and metals, which can be naturally-occurring or result from urban storm water runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming - Pesticides and herbicides, which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, urban storm water runoff, and residential uses.

- Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can also come from gas stations, urban storm water runoff, and septic systems.

- Radioactive contaminants, which can be naturallyoccurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities.

Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the EPAs Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.

In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, EPA prescribes regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. FDA regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health.

Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population.

Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. EPA/ CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. We cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

Source of Water: OREGON To determine Or egon’s susceptibility to groundwater contamination, information obtained during a Well Site Survey performed by the Illinois Rural Water Association on October 20, 1998 was reviewed. Based on this information, several potential sources of contamination were identified within proximity of this water supply’s wells. The Illinois EPA does not consider the city’s source water susceptible to contamination. This determination is based on a number of criteria including: monitoring conducted at the wells; monitoring conducted at the entry point to the distribution system; and the available hydrogeologic data on the wells. In anticipation of the U.S. EPA’s proposed Ground Water Rule, the Illinois EPA has determined that the water supply is not vulnerable to viral contamination. This determination is based upon the completed evaluation of the following criteria during the Vulnerability Waiver Process: the community’s wells are properly constructed with sound integrity and proper site conditions; a hydrogeologic barrier exists that should prevent pathogen movement; all potential routes and sanitary defects have been mitigated such that the source water is adequately protected; monitoring data did not indicate a history of disease outbreak; and a sanitary survey of the water supply did not indicate a viral contamination threat. Because the community’s wells are constructed in a confined aquifer, which should minimize the movement of pathogens into the wells, well hydraulics were not considered to be a significant factor in the vulnerability determination. Hence, well hydraulics were not evaluated for this groundwater supply.

Level 2 Assessment: A Level 2 assessment is a very detailed study of the water system to identify potential problems and determine (if possible) why an E. coli MCL violation has occurred and/or why total coliform bacteria have been found in our water system on multiple occasions.

Maximum Contaminant Level or MCL: The highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as feasible using the best available treatment technology.

Maximum Contaminant Level Goal or MCLG: The level of a contaminant in drinking water below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MCLGs allow for a margin of safety.

Maximum residual disinfectant level or MRDL: The highest level of a disinfectant allowed in drinking water. There is convincing evidence that addition of a disinfectant is necessary for control of microbial contaminants.

Maximum residual disinfectant level goal or MRDLG: The level of a drinking water disinfectant below which there is no known or expected risk to health. t was a good thing it was decided to move our May meeting to the Polo Senior Center because the place was packed. We had 86 there for the program on the Peek Home and it was a great evening.

Beth attempted to Zoom our program for those who could not make it but that did not want to work. We also need to invest in some lapel microphones for future use.

When you hold a microphone, it has to be right up to your mouth to be effective. People are afraid of a microphone in the first place. Then it is very difficult to hold your notes and a microphone at the same time.

One needs to have a good podium to spread your notes out and then one hand always keeps the microphone up to your mouth. The other hand works with your notes. The entire process is not easy especially when you have nearly 90 people in the room.

It was good visiting with those you had not seen before COVID. We have been shut up for entirely too long and it was nice to have something in the community.

It was great to have Tom Nelson from the city and he still loves Polo. He loves to walk around in the community and sit on a park bench. It is still hard to imagine being dropped off at the Peek Home as a 6-year0old child.

But children are resilient and they learn to adapt. So far we have records of 298 children that called Peek Home their home. We also realized there were some not recorded toward the

end and at different times. We are adding those names since we do not want to miss anyone.

We need to make a display at the museum of the Peek Home and that is one of our to-do things on the list. We also need to finish the display of the churches and the Lutheran Church is one of those that did not get done years ago.

We will plan on starting that in June and Lori, our Lutheran Church secretary, will help. Lily is now on board for the summer so the young ones will have good ideas.

Last week, Linda Poole, Linda Gall, Lily and myself spent one afternoon getting Aplington House ready for the school tour of the seventh and eighth graders.

I looked up at one spot and realized that the early 1900 portrait of the Plum children had not been brought up to Aplington House and I knew exactly

the spot where I wanted it.

Lily went back to the museum, carried it back to the house and hung it up for me.

The frame is very beautiful and it looks lovely on the wall beside the clock that Paul Graehling made for Polo Historical Society many years ago. I love the hand painted picture of the children.

The children are Doris Plum Blough, Gladys Plum Clayton and Lowell Plum. Thank you to the Blough family. Now I need to make a card so people know who they are.

We still have more to do to get ready for the school students later on in May. It will be a big day and 15 people will be helping to give some of the history of Polo and Buffalo Grove.

those kinds of words.

Think about a story like this: I can see a cat. The cat has a hat. The cat has a big hat. As more phonics skills are acquired, children need more books that have those letter-sound patterns.

Additionally, teachers need a large variety of texts with different topics and stories so we can find the books that will interest our reluctant readers. Myrna knew and understood that helping them learn to love books and reading is a big part of learning to read.

I do not know how many books it may take to teach a child to learn to read. I do know that we need to have as many as it might take. It is that important. Myrna knew that well. I think she would be pleased that the current reading specialists have been given this opportunity to purchase more books to keep building the literacy skills of students so they can keep reading and learn to love reading!

Illinois 64, 72 bridge repairs set to begin this month Construction on the bridge carrying Illinois 64 over Pine Creek in Ogle County will begin Tuesday, May 17, weather permitting. The bridge is located three miles west of Mt. Morris.

The Illinois Department of Transportation project will include replacing the approach slab to the structure.

One lane of traffic will be maintained using temporary traffic signals and a barrier wall. Work is expected to be completed by June 29.

Construction on three bridges on Illinois 64 and Illinois 72 in Ogle County were also slated to begin on May 11.

Those projects are the Illinois 64 bridge over the Rock River in Oregon,

the Illinois 72 bridge over Black Walnut Creek west of Stillman Valley and the Illinois 72 over Kilbuck Creek east of Davis Junction.

All projects involve bridge deck patching. At the Illinois 64 Rock River bridge, there will be staged construction with one lane of traffic maintained in each direction.

The Illinois 72 bridges will have one lane of traffic maintained by a barrier wall and temporary traffic signals. All three projects are

expected to be completed by June 15.

“Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urge d to pay clos e attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment,” an IDOT news release said.

“Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve more than 3,535 miles of highway and 9 million square feet of bridge deck as part of the Rebuild Illinois capital program, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation.

Accomplishments through Year Two included about $5.2 billion in improvements statewide on 3,020 miles of highway and 270 bridges along with 428 additional safety improvements,” the release said.

Dear Editor, The Mt. Morris Public Library recently held a Quiche and Scone Fundraiser to help fund the various programs of the library.

We would like to thank the community for its support. We received 38 separate orders and were able to raise just over $1,300. We were given a Thrivent grant to help offset our expenses.

We would like to thank the Disciples United Methodist Church for allowing us to use their kitchen and fellowship hall. We were also grateful for the help from Gary Melvin and Pastor Julie when we had issues with the ovens.

Everyone enjoyed culinary delights during the art preview and at intermission the guests were treated to desserts from local businesses.

LOCAL NEWS Farm Bureau scholarship winners announced

Kayla White, Renee Gehrke, Megan Hagemann, Jack Richolson, Hannah Seaworth, Isaac Charbonneau, Breanna Cisketti and Grace Pfeiffer were all recently named as recipients of scholarships awarded by the Ogle County Farm Bureau in 2022.

Kayla White was awarded the Del Flessner Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,500. This scholarship was created to honor the legacy of longtime Ogle County Farm Bureau Manager Del Flessner.

She is the daughter of Ryan and Michelle White. Kayla is a 2020 graduate of Stillman Valley High School and is currently majoring in agronomy at Highland Community College with plans to attend Iowa State University next fall.

Renee Gehrke and Megan Hagemann were named winners of the $1,000 General Farm Bureau Scholarship.

Renee is the daughter of Jason and Kathi Gehrke, Byron. She is a 2021 graduate of

Byron High School and currently attends Highland Community College majoring in dairy science. She plans to continue her studies at Iowa State University next fall.

Megan Hagemann is the daughter of Brad and Jean Hagemann, Mt. Morris. She is a 2020 graduate of Forreston High School and attends Highland Community College majoring in animal science.

Jack Richolson was named the recipient of the $1,000 Don Bybee Memorial Scholarship, sponsored through the generosity of the Bybee Family to honor Bybee for his many years of service to agriculture in Ogle County.

Jack is the son of Brad and Julie Richolson, Lindenwood. Jack will graduate from Rochelle Township High School this spring and will continue his studies at Iowa State University studying agriculture business.

Hannah Seaworth is the recipient of the Mark Detig Memorial Scholarship awarded in the amount of $1,000. This scholarship honors the late Mark Detig for his service to

the Ogle County Pork Producers Association and Ogle County agriculture.

Hannah is the daughter of Todd and Norna Seaworth, Lindenwood. Hannah will graduate from Stillman Valley High School this spring and continue her studies in biology at the University of Louisville.

Isaac Charbonneau is the Ag Technology Scholarship $1,000 winner. Isaac is the son of Melinda Charbonneau, Leaf River. He graduated Byron High School last year and will continue his studies at Kishwaukee Community College majoring in diesel mechanics.

Grace Pfeiffer is the recipient of the Mary LeFevre Memorial Scholarship, sponsored in cooperation between the Farm Bureau and the Jeff and Joyce Tremble Family. The scholarship focuses on students pursuing careers in health care.

Grace is the daughter of Jason and Angela Pfeiffer, Davis Junction. She will graduate from Stillman Valley High School this spring and will attend the University of Wisconsin

– Platteville majoring in biology. The scholarship is awarded at $1,000.

Breanna Cisketti was awarded the George LeFevre Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. The scholarship also is funded with the cooperation of the Jeff and Joyce Tremble Family, recognizing LeFevre for his lifelong service to Ogle County agriculture.

Breanna is the daughter of Brian and Brandi Cisketti, Polo. Breanna will graduate Polo High School this spring and go onto study agribusiness at the University of Wisconsin – Platteville.

This marks the 24th year that the Ogle County Farm Bureau has awarded scholarships to member dependents who seek to pursue course studies in agriculture at an accredited institution of higher education.

Scholarships will again be awarded in 2023 and applications will be available in January.

Ganymedes gearing up for the Field of Dreams Oregon’s vintage base ball team, the Ganymedes, will be playing at a famous baseball field May 27 and is inviting Ogle County residents to plan now for an evening of history and fun.

“We have rented the Field of Dreams Movie Site field in Dyersville, Iowa, for an 1867 rules match between the Oregon Ganymedes and the Canton Cornshuckers Base Ball Club of Canton, Michigan, on Friday, May 27, from 7 to 10 p.m.,” said team captain Mark Herman.

The teams will have exclusive use of the field under the lights for three hours, but team members can arrive much earlier to warm up along with the public.

Herman said there won’t be any tall corn, but getting a weekend rental with corn was going to be very hard as weekend night youth baseball tournaments sponsored by Field of Dreams get first dibs and are very popular.

The site is also booked for the new MLB August blockout dates for their annual game and few vintage teams will be getting games there in the future.

Dyersville is a scenic two and a half hour drive from Oregon.

If you’d like to see the team before the Iowa game, the Ganymedes are at home on Sunday, May 15, at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader against the McLean County Prairie Chickens of Normal. The games will be at the

Chana School Museum in Oregon.

These games will be using 1860 rules.

The Ganymedes’ run for a title at the 18th annual World Tournament of Historic Base Ball ended with a “wellplayed” loss to perennial tournament champion the Saginaw Old Golds in August, capping the Oregon-based team’s ‘best-ever’ run at the unique competition, held at the Henry Ford Museum/Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan.

The team, founded in 2005, plays at Iron Chest Field at Oregon Park East next to the historic Chana School.

Vintage rules base ball (spelled as two words in the 1800s) is played with authentic wool uniforms, no gloves, and gentlemanly conduct.

Bus Trip to Field of Dreams The Oregon Park District is offering a fan bus for the event which will leave Oregon at 12:30 p.m.

Prior to the game, enjoy dinner at Chads Pizza & Restaurant.

All other attractions, shopping and meals are on your own. There is no admission fee to the game.

The first installment will be due on June 10, with the second installment due on Sept 2.

“This single document will contain tax information and payment stubs for both installments. Therefore, property owners need to save this bill as no additional notice will be mailed prior to the second installment,” Ogle County Collector Linda Beck said in a news release.

Leaf River Summer Daze is back again June 3-5

azoellner@shawmedia.com After a pared down year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Leaf River Summer Daze is set to be back as big as before.

“We’re excited to have people come out and enjoy the weekend and start the summer with us,” said Laura Werner, Leaf River Lions Club president and Leaf River Summer Daze Committee co-secretary.

Leaf River Summer Daze is scheduled for June 3-5. The majority of the events take place at the River Valley Complex and Bertolet Memorial Library.

Activities such as the car show and grand parade are back this year, along with other things they had to forgo in 2021 because of the uncertainties surrounding COVID-19, Werner said.

Friday night is the Leaf River Lions Club’s “big night” with fireworks, music and more, she said.

“We try to have family-friendly prices so you can come down and have dinner and enjoy the evening,” Werner said.

On Saturday, there’s lots of food and, of course, the tractor pulls, she said. Children’s games will be in two locations this year – Bertolet Memorial Library and the Leaf River Fire Station.

“Up at the library, the Lions Club does games and stuff,” Werner said.

“Everybody wins a prize.”

There’s also Kenny and his barrel wagon rides at the library, she added.

Werner said she wasn’t sure of all the things going on at Sparky’s Kid Zone at the fire station, but knows there will be a bouncy house.

“Then Sunday, we have a bags tournament and the Lions pork chip BBQ,” she said. “Ogle County Pork Producers will be grilling for us Saturday and Sunday. Normally they do it Saturday at the tractor pulls, but this is the first year they’re going to do it for the Lions

Girls track and field The Dixon, Rock Falls and Oregon girls track and field teams competed at the Big Northern Conference Meet on May 5 in Rockford, and the three local teams finished 3-4-5 in the final team standings.

Host Rockford Christian won the title with 112 points, with Winnebago right behind at 108. Dixon was third (84), and Rock Falls edged out Oregon 67-66 for fourth.

Jenae Bothe had the highlight of the meet to lead the Hawks, breaking the BNC record in the discus with a toss of 137 feet, 3 inches.

It broke the conference record of 133-7 by Hampshire’s Erin Salinas in 2003, and also topped Allison Kereven’s Oregon record of 125-11.

Bothe also won the shot put (41-7 1/2), an event she already holds the school record.

Sophie Stender had Oregon’s other win, taking the 100 hurdles (16.81 seconds) and also finishing second in the 300 hurdles (52.83). Ava Wight was runner-up in the triple jump (30-2).

West Carroll took third (96), Galena-East Dubuque-River Ridge finished fourth (94), and Stockton-Warren was fifth (72).

Letrese Buisker won the 300 hurdles (54.60 seconds) and high jump (4 feet, 10

inches), and took third in the 100 hurdles (17.25 seconds) for the Cardinals, and Sydni Badertscher won the shot put (10.41 meters) and discus (97 feet, 4 inches). The quartet of Courtney Grobe, Jayleigh Newill, Autum Pritchard and Bekah Zeigler took the 4x800 (12:30.40).

Kamryn Stockton was runner-up in the 3200 (17:01.08), Ennen Ferris was second in the high jump (4-8) and third in the 200 (29.71 seconds), and Zeigler took third in the triple jump (28-10 1/2).

Hawks win 8 events at sectional prep: Oregon hosted a sectional prep meet at Landers-Loomis Field, notching 20 top-three finishes. No team scores were kept.

Jenae Bothe won the shot put (11.00 meters) and discus (38.45 meters) to lead the Hawks. Miranda Ciesel won the 800 (2:58.79), placed second in the 400 (1:14.65), and took third in the long jump (3.84 meters). Rylie Robertson won the 300 hurdles (55.54 seconds) and took second in the 100 hurdles (17.85 seconds), while Sonya Plescia won the pole vault (2.29 meters) and was second in the triple jump (8.56 meters), and Ava Wight won the triple jump (9.43 meters) and placed second in the 200 (13.61 seconds).

Ellen Hodson won the 1,600 (6:39.77), and

Sophie Stender won the 100 hurdles (16.75 seconds) for Oregon. Paige Beauchem was second to Bothe in the shot put (9.09 meters) and discus (26.86 meters), and Jennica Ciesel was runner-up in the 1,600 (6:55.75) and high jump (1.47 meters).

Avery Sellers took third in the shot put (8.75 meters) and fourth in the discus (23.00 meters), Alease McLain was third in the discus (25.67 meters), and Mariah Drake placed third in the high jump (25.67 meters).

Boys track and field Cardinals 2nd in Milledgeville: Forreston-Polo scored 109 points to finish behind only Galena-East Dubuque-River Ridge (113) at the Missile Invite.

Lena-Winslow took third (102) and Newman finished fourth (96). Host Milledgeville-Eastland placed sixth (42).

Matthew Beltran was a triple-winner for the Cardinals, taking the 110 hurdles (15.61 seconds), 300 hurdles (43.34 seconds) and high jump (1.92 meters). Brock Soltow won the 400 (54.21 seconds), Avery Grenoble was second in the 200 (23.15 seconds), and Carson Jones was runner-up in the 800 (2:12.49). The Cardinals also ran to second in the 4x800 (8:49.43).

Boys track and field Dukes 5th in Geneseo: Dixon scored 141.5

points over the three flights to finish fifth at the McCormick ABC Invite in Geneseo. Other local teams in attendance were Forreston-Polo (89 points), Rock Falls (87), Erie-Prophetstown (84) and Fulton (27).

Forreston-Polo got wins from Thomas Falk in the C 800 (2:18.17) and Matthew Beltran in the A 110 hurdles (15.24 seconds). Beltran also placed second in the A high jump (1.87 meters), and Carson Jones was runner-up in the A 1600 (4:50.16). The foursome of Wyatt Queckoboerner, Payton Encheff, Falk and Jones placed second in the A 4x800 (9:02.98).

Bass fishing Polo 4th at sectional: The Marcos hauled in a total weight of 14 pounds, 5 ounces to finish fourth at the bass fishing sectional at Pool 13 of the Mississippi River on May 5.

Riverdale won with a total weight of 18 points, 10 ounces, while Moline was second (18 pounds, 6 ounces). Three qualified for the state meet, with Polo earning the spot as the alternate. Team members were Logan Nelson, Jeffrey Donaldson, Kale Grobe and Kameron Grobe.

Fulton finished sixth (11 pounds, 7 ounces), Newman took 10th (7 pounds, 5 ounces), and Erie-Prophetstown placed 11th (5 pounds, 8 ounces).

Softball, baseball teams prepare for state tournaments

W

ith girls track and field sectionals and soccer regional finals May 13, the postseason has begun for spring sports. Baseball, softball and boys track kick off next week.

Forreston girls received a coveted No. 1 sub-sectional in softball. Normally, the NUIC produces some of the better teams in the state, but this year lacks that one or two outstanding squads.

The conference was wide open and so is the sectional. Orangeville, opposite of Forreston, is the other No. 1 sectional seed. It’s anyone’s guess as to whether it will be Forreston, Orangeville, Dakota, Durand, Pearl City or maybe a darkhorse winning out.

One such darkhorse is Polo, which is poised to make the Dakota regional final.

In 2A softball, Oregon has a much tougher path to navigate with its No. 3 sub-sectional seed behind North Boone and Rock Falls. And waiting on the other side of the sectional bracket is powerhouse Marengo.

In conference play, it looks like North Boone and Rock Falls are battling it out for first, with Oregon, Stillman Valley and Dixon close behind.

Like 1A softball, 1A baseball is wide

However, after losing its first four games, Le-Win went on a 14-game winning streak before losing to Winnebago on Saturday.

For Oregon and Polo baseball, it has been a case of primarily freshmen and sophomores playing against varsity competition. Neither team has won a conference game and look to rebuild.

Jenae Bothe of Oregon continues to make a name for herself in the throwing events, breaking both school and conference records in the discus.

At Rockford Christian last week, her effort of 137-3 smashed Allison Kereven’s school record by 12 feet, much the same way she obliterated the shot put record a couple of weeks

earlier. Not only that, but Jenae broke the school record at least three times that afternoon.

Her father John promised to buy me dinner before the sectional meet if I would be present for any of Jenae’s shot or discus attempts.

Why? Because I’ve only watched one of her shot puts and two discus attempt and each time a school record was broken. A good luck charm? Maybe, but I have to admit not being present for the 137-3 so I won’t hold Mr. Bothe to the free meal.

That mark of 137-3 is better than anything thrown in 2A or 3A. However, it is only fourth-best in a stacked 1A field.

Much has been made of sporting teams using Native American names as a mascot, especially at the college and professional levels.

With the IHSA promising to review this subject, I became curious as to how many schools use Native American nicknames.

As of now, the following schools use Indians – Altamont, Brimfield, Dakota, Carlyle,Chicago Lane, DuQuoin, Johnston City, Lawrenceville, Lewsitown,

Marengo, Mascoutah, Meredosia, Minooka, Neoga, Payson, Pawnee, Pontiac, Rockton Hononegah, Sandwich and Winnebago.

Other holdouts are the Cahokia Commanches, Nokomis and Sullivan Redskins, Midlothian and Annawan Braves, Mackinaw Chiefs, Aurora West and Stockton Blackhawks and Morrisville Mohawks.

That is down from a high of about 60 schools that used Indian mascots over 50 years ago. Some of those schools have folded up, but many dropped the Indian monikers because of public scrutiny.

The latest skirmish involved Morris and a decision by its school board to drop Redskins. That did not go over well with locals and a new mascot has yet to be found.

Speaking of mascots, these are the most widely used in Illinois – Rockets, Pirates, Panthers, Trojans, Bulldogs, Lions, Tigers, Vikings, Eagles, Cardinals, Falcons, Hornets, Devils, Wildcats, Knights, Warriors and Rams.

• Andy Colbert, an avid runner, has been a sports writer for Shaw Media and has covered high school sports in Ogle County for more than 30 years.

Hadley Lutz recorded a hat trick in the 1A regional semifinals on Tuesday, but it wasn’t enough as the Hawks’ season came to an end in penalty kicks at the 1A regional in Princeton.

The Cogs’ Jaida Modesto scored with 49 seconds left in regulation to tie the game 4-4 and force overtime.

After two scoreless 10-minute overtime periods, sixth-seeded G-K won 3-0 in PKs to upset No. 2 seed Oregon, 5-4.

Alyssa Mowry scored a goal for the Hawks, and Teagan Champley and Sophie Stender tallied one assist each. Taylar Rufer had six saves in goal.

Samantha Wendt scored twice in regulation for the Cogs, and Adeline Valenti added a goal.

Wendt, Yuliza Fuentes and Citali Serna scored PKs, while G-K keeper Alahna Siegwarth stopped three Oregon kicks, with the fourth sailing over the goal.

Ogle County Sheriff’s Office announces distracted driving enforcement results The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office issued 26 citations for using cellphones while driving and 665 other citations during the April distracted driving enforcement period.

The citations were issued for numerous offenses, including: Four felony drug arrests; 29 citations for no valid-, revoked- or suspended license;

10 arrests for driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs; 14 arrests for cannabis violations; 37 citations to uninsured drivers; 156 citations for speeding-related violations.

“Distracted Driving Awareness Month allowed the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office to bring a heightened awareness to stop motorists from engaging in this deadly behavior,” Sheriff Brian VanVickle said.

The sheriff’s office joined forces with state and local law enforcement and highway safety partners for this enforcement effort.

Using a phone in anything other than hands-free mode is not only dangerous, but also illegal in Illinois.

“Break the cycle. Drop it and drive,” VanVickle said.

The Illinois distracted driving campaign is funded with federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

OREGON POLICE Oregon Police Chief Shawn Melville reports the following police activity.

April 26 Michael D. Judkins, 43, of Mt. Morris, was arrested at 6:58 p.m. for driving while license suspended. Judkins was transported to the Ogle County jail. This violation occurred in the 300 block of W. Washington Street.

April 28 Michael D. Pontnack, 54, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 10:35 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred in the 800 block of W. Washington Street.

April 29 Shea J. Jones, 22, of Dixon, was arrested at 7:22 p.m. on an outstanding Lee County warrant for failure to appear. Jones was

transported to the Ogle County jail.

May 1 April L. Lord, 57, of Naperville, was issued a citation at 6:08 p.m. for operating a motor vehicle with an expired registration. This violation occurred in the 100 block of N. 4th Street.

May 2022: At 10:40 p.m., police arrested Cecilia Lomeli, 37, of Rockford, for driving while license revoked. Lomeli was also issued citations for operating a vehicle in violation of the tinted front side windows law and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. These violations occurred in the 200 block of W. Washington Street.

May 3 Shayne M. Withers, 21, of Byron, was

issued a citation at 9:30 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred in the 800 block of W. Washington Street.

May 5 At 1:10 p.m., the Oregon School Resoure Officer issued a city citation to one female juvenile, 16, of Oregon, for violating Ordinance 6-84, possession of tobacco products and alternative nicotine products.

This violation occurred at the Oregon High School, 210 S. 10th Street.

Deja N. Patton, 24, of Mt. Morris, was arrested at 5:05 p.m. for no valid driver’s license. Patton was also issued a citation for disobeying a stop sign. These violations took place in the 200 block of S. 2nd Street. Patton was transported to the Ogle County jail.

Nicholas M. Kasten, 40, of Oregon, was issued a city citation at 9 p.m. for violating two city ordinances—an inoperable motor vehicle and vehicle parked in the grass.

These violations occur in the 500 block of S. Second Street.

May 6 Robert D. VanDyke, 40, of Oregon, was issued a city citation at 5:33 p.m. for violating the trash/rubbish city ordinance.

This violation occurred in the 700 block of S. Second Street.

Ten parking citations and 30 verbal warnings issued April 25-May 8.

Johnson and Oliver were transported to the Ogle County Jail and held pending an appearance before a judge.

May 5 Rashema Malone, 34, of Rockford, was arrested at 7:21 p.m. for driving on a suspended driver’s license after a traffic stop in the 18000 block of Illinois Route 64 for an equipment violation. Malone also was cited for illegal window tint.

Malone was released on a signature I-Bond and given a return court date.

Robert Curatola II, 35, of Ashton, was arrested at 7:27 p.m. for driving while license revoked after a traffic stop in the 5000 block of South Chana Road. Curatola also was cited for speeding and illegal window tint. Curatola was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Jeremy Lower, 42, of Leaf River, was arrested at 9:58 p.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies responded to a vehicle parked in the roadway in the 1000 block of North Ridge Road. Lower also was cited for illegal transportation of alcohol and illegal parking in the roadway. He was transported to the

Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

May 6 Jesus Orozco, 30, of Rochelle, was arrested at 12:33 a.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol after a traffic stop near the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Woolf Court in Rochelle. Orozco also was cited for illegal transportation of alcohol, improper lane usage and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Orozco was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Isaiah Jiminez, 20, of Rock Falls, was arrested at 11:20 p.m. for driving on a suspended license after a traffic stop near the intersection of Illinois Route 2 and Margaret Fuller Drive in rural Oregon. Jiminez also was cited for operating a motor vehicle with expired registration. Jiminez was released on a $2,500 I-Bond and given a future court date.

May 8 Chandler Mershon, 31, of Stillman Valley, was arrested for driving with no valid driver’s license and possession of cannabis/ open container. Mershon was arrested on Illinois Route 72 near Stillman Valley after being stopped for a domestic disturbance investigation. Mershon was released on an I-Bond and will appear in court at a later date.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF ACTIVITY Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity.

May 4 Xzena Hernandez, 40, of Rockford, was arrested at 2:12 a.m. on an out-of-state warrant following a traffic stop at Illinois Route 72 and Illinois Route 251. She also was cited for an inoperable registration light.

Hernandez was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held awaiting extradition.

William L. Flannery, 64, of South Elgin, was arrested at 12:28 p.m. for driving while license revoked after a traffic stop in the 300 block of East 3rd Street in Leaf River.

Flannery also was cited for use of electronic communication device while driving.

Flannery was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

A 17-year-old juvenile female, of Sterling, was taken into limited custody at 7:47 p.m. for driving on a suspended license after a traffic stop near the intersection of Freeport and Robin roads. The juvenile also was cited for speeding 15- to 20 mph above the speed limit. She subsequently was released to a parent.

At approximately 8:01 p.m., deputies and the Stillman Fire Protection District responded to the 9000 block of Illinois Route

72 for a single-vehicle crash. An investigation determined that a Harley Davidson motorcycle operated by Zachary S. Grove, 28, of Stillman Valley, was traveling west on Route 72 when Grove lost control. Grove and the motorcycle then exited the roadway and traveled into the north ditch before coming to a rest. Grove was treated by fire department personnel and transported to a nearby hospital for his injuries.

Grove was cited for expired registration, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. The crash remains under investigation.

Vidale Johnson, 30, of Rockford, was arrested at 9:39 p.m. for aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon after a traffic stop in the 2000 block of North River Road. Johnson also was cited for improper lane usage and a broken tail light. A passenger in the vehicle, Steve Oliver, 31, of Chicago, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, possession of cannabis 100-500 grams, obstructing identification and an outstanding Naperville Police Department warrant. Oliver also was cited for illegal transportation of alcohol. Both
