A plant health care specialist from The Morton Arboretum will offer a program in Oregon on April 18 about the importance of having native trees in communities.

“Trees, especially native trees, are crucial to the health and well-being of our communities,” said Marcia Heuer, Ogle County Board member for District 8 and Safety Committee chairperson. “Illinois’ native trees – like oak, hickory and walnut – support over 800 different species of birds, wildlife, pollinators and insects, and they are a significant part of our cultural and natural heritage.”

Plant Health Care Outreach Specialist Tricia Bethke will discuss native trees and teach attendees how to identify and protect trees.

While predicted for decades, we now see more extreme weather events and wonder what’s causing them, and what can we do about them. Even faster than a changing climate, the policy and legislative landscape is evolving rapidly. reach to Illinois residents on all things tree-related, including identification, tree pest threats, preservation and tree health monitoring.

This program will cover: Key causes of climate change: how much will the climate change, key aspects of recently passed legislation, how much will emissions be reduced, is more needed to be done, can we afford the cost of climate change, and how to encourage local officials to obtain approved funding.

The presenter, Mike Zanillo, is a climate policy advocate and Community Outreach Coordinator for Citizens Climate Education. He meets regularly with key congressional and senatorial offices in Washington DC to advise on public climate policy.

The Morton Arboretum, located in Lisle, is a 1,700-acre public garden and outdoor museum with a library, herbarium and research programs, including the Center for Tree Science.

Storm Damage

A large limb off a mature tree on North Sixth Street in Oregon fell on two vehicles during the March 31 storm that raced across the region.

He is guest contributor to local newspapers and has presented educational sessions on the topic of climate change policy at over a 100 clean energy conferences, community groups, churches, schools and libraries. He is a graduate of the University of Chicago with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and studied graduate-level business programs at Loyola University and Northern Illinois University.

Passport Fair - Saturday, April 12, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. The Oregon Public Library is hosting a special passport event at the Oregon Public Library, 300 Jefferson Street, Oregon on Saturday, April 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to provide passport information to U.S. citizens and to accept passport applications.
