Longtime Chief Jason White set to retire soon

azoellner@shawmedia.com The Village of Mt. Morris soon will welcome a new face to the position of police chief.

On March 22, village trustees voted to hire Michael Cicchetti as chief at a rate of $34.65 per hour. An exact start date is not yet set, but it will be after Cicchetti gives his two-week notice at the Sycamore Police Department.

“It was very, very close,” Law Enforcement Trustee Chris Kolling said. “All three

individuals [were] highly qualified. There was just no way to go wrong.”

Cicchetti was one of three finalists out of a large pool, Kolling said. He said he, Village President Phil Labash and the three-person Police Commission reviewed 17 applications, interviewed seven people virtually and the final three in person.

“Lots of factors in the collaborative decision to make Mike the final choice,” Kolling said. “For me, it was his familiarity with the village, having been here as an officer.”

Cicchetti previously worked for the Mt. Morris Police Department for five or six years, Kolling said. He was unsure of the exact dates.

Kolling said he’s looking forward to an easy, open line of communication between himself and Cicchetti in order to make sure the police department’s wants and needs

are heard by the board.

“It works well with Chief White and me.

I expect it to work well with Mike Cicchetti,” Kolling said. “When we met with him, it was my impression that I was not going to have any challenge having a conversation with him. He’s communicative and easy to understand.”

Current Police Chief Jason White is retiring after a long career with the village.

“I think it’s great,” Kolling said. “It is the moving on from one long period of Chief White into another one, but it’s good.

It’s as good as I could have hoped it would have been, because we go from this long period of, ‘This is the way it is,’ into a new space, a new thing, it’s like, ‘What’s going to happen?’ There’s a question, but I feel confident it will be good.”

Music students do well at solo, ensemble contest

The Oregon High School music department had a successful day at IHSA Solo and Ensemble Contest on March 5.

There were several “best of day” awards given to OHS band and choir students: Brandon Rowe (Snare Drum Solo), Brandon Rowe (Drumset Solo), Ethan Schafer

(Saxophone Solo), Olivia Wynn (Vocal Solo), Vocal ensemble (Jennica Ciesiel, Ellen Hodson, Liz Mois, Sophia Stender, Imagin Terlikowski, Olivia Wynn), and Vocal Ensemble (Wesley Immel, Isaac Ebert, Brandon Rowe, Dom Terlikowski, Miguel Vazquez-Barragan).

“Overall, Oregon High School students were awarded with 58 Division I ratings and 24 Division II ratings. The OHS music department is currently ranked in fourth place among Class B schools throughout Illinois,” said Zach Hall, OHS choir director.

OREGON – The plan to surprise Spanish teacher Kimberly Radostits in her second-floor Oregon High School classroom didn’t go quite as planned.

“Dr. Ayala? What are you doing here?” Radostits asked as she stood in the hallway on Tuesday, clearly shocked to see Illinois State Superintendent of Education Carmen Ayala.

Ayala, flanked by district staff and members of the media, smoothly responded that she was visiting the 10 Regional Teacher of the Year winners.

Radostits, 36, was named the Northwest Regional Teacher of the Year earlier this month.

“I’m honored,” Radostits said. “I guess I did not see this happening, but I’m excited about it. Like I had told my friends, I was in a really unique position – that if I won overall state Teacher of the Year, it’s going to push me out of my comfort zone, and I am going to grow in ways that I couldn’t have ever imagined.

“And if I didn’t win, I win, because I get to hang out with these people every single day,” she added, motioning to her students. “That’s how I feel. I mean, talking about the perfect situation, it was a win-win. … I love this. So yeah, let’s do it. I look forward to the future.”

The Illinois State Board of Education has sponsored the Teacher of the Year program since 1970, according to the ISBE website. It recognizes “the best of the teaching profession” in the state, with all public and nonpublic pre-K-12 educators who have more than five years of experience eligible to win.

Radostits works with students who “need a little extra support and who really resonate and have a relationship with her,” Ayala said of Radostits’ nomination. She helps students study and get ready to pass classes.

“All those things, and that’s one of the most important reasons – her work with students,” Ayala said. “But also, her work during the pandemic and supporting teachers. So that was something that was very important as well.”

Radostits is the best teacher he’s ever had, said Andru Holland-Jones, 14.

Caelyn Langley, 16, agreed.

“She’s honestly the best teacher I’ve ever had,” Langley said. “Like, she’s a total sweetheart. She’s really helped me out, like really got me on a good path. I wasn’t doing too well my freshman year. She’s the reason that I’m doing better this year.”

Her entire career, she’s felt like a winner, said Radostits, who has worked at Oregon High School for 15 years.

“I felt like a winner all year. I felt like a winner my entire career,” she said. “I can see myself no place other than Oregon. And I truly believe that we’re doing some awesome things in this district that I’m excited to share.”

SPECIAL FUNDRAISER Serenity Home and Hospice fundraiser is April 6

Serenity Home and Hospice will host its first Art Dash Fundraiser at Cork and Tap, 305 W. Washington St., Oregon, on Wednesday, April 6 from 6 to 7 p.m.

Tickets are divided into two categories, “Dasher” which cost $100 and “Spectator” which cost $50.

The fundraiser will feature 50 local artists from throughout the nine counties that are serviced by Serenity, all of whom have

donated original artwork worth at least $100.

After the “Art Preview”, three attendees who have purchased “Dasher” tickets will be randomly selected to dash for an art piece of their choosing. Every “Dasher” will have the opportunity to go home with an art piece.

“Spectators” will not have the opportunity to “Dash” for art. Both “Dashers” and “Spectators” will be able to enjoy live music, light bites, view the art, and mingle with many of the artists.

It’s good to be back outside in the warm sunshine again

S

pring is in the air and I can look out and see the daffodils coming up that Krista planted last fall. Also there is a bit of green popping up in the flower beds that we could see from the patio.

Last week we went out and sat on the patio on one of those warm days. It felt good to be outside in the warm sunshine.

I am recovering from knee replacement surgery and I can now understand why doctors are hesitant to do this to people who are near or in their 90s.

I am doing fine and the doctor told my son Bruce following surgery, “Your mother is not the usual near 90-year-old person.” Bruce answered, “We all knew that!”

I have always been blessed with an abundance of energy and I have certainly been glad these last two weeks.

Krista, my daughter from Wisconsin, has been here with me for a while and it has been nice having her here to see that things ran smoothly. She even

Daya was very cooperative getting into her little cat carrier even though she hates it.

The cat has recognized something is different since I am not in my usual chair. I have been fortunate to have a ramp, walk-in shower, and Kenneth’s wonderful electric chair that lays back. I use that for ice packs, exercising, and someplace to watch all the basketball games.

I am not able just to sit with my legs down so working on the Internet is slow at the moment.

I am not on any pain medicine nor do I have any pain and that is good since pain medicine and I do not get

along. Also what they give you for an anesthetic never agrees with me and I am always glad when that wears off.

Others have the same reaction.

Right now the name of the game is walk, ice and exercise. My doctor this week told me I was doing fine, take it easy, and pamper myself. Interesting.

Things at the museum are going fine. We had 35 at our last meeting and the program was great. I sent Krista so I could get a full report and she was quite impressed with all.

Kevin Smoot and his partner were most interesting in what they find in the ground and how it connects to our history.

We are still attempting to find where the race track was in connection with Eagle Point Road. I thought years ago I could see it as I traveled the road but maybe I was wrong.

Our program that will be coming up is going to be on Peek Home and Tom Nelson will be there to tell us a few things about how it felt being brought there as a child.

A few years ago a lady from Chicago sent to Ogle County Historical Society a ledger that contained all of the names of the residents and workers at the home. We found out about it quite by accident and I gave them a call. They had no information on Peek Home and really knew nothing about it.

They quickly realized the book needed to come to Polo and the museum. Linda Gall is now putting all the names on a spreadsheet and we probably need to set up a display somewhere. There are still people inquiring about pictures of parents who dropped off their children to be taken care of in the home.

The story is never ending as family continues to try and find out where their loved one was raised. And they were one big family at Peek Home and it was a successful place.

1902 newspaper: Schiller Piano Co. is on the top

BY OTTO DICK This information was in the 1902 Ogle County Republican newspaper: “An Infant Industry Ten Years Ago Has Now Grown to Mammoth Proportions – A Tender Shoot Carefully Nursed, Backed and Pushed With That Quiet Determination so Characteristic of President F. G. Jones has resulted in Placing the Schiller in the Foremost Ranks in the Music World.”

The Schiller Piano Co. was established in 1886 and during the first 16 years of existence had sold about 16,000 pianos.

In 1901, sales were $345,000. Labor costs were $120,000. A large addition was added to the Schiller Factory giving it a total floor space of 51,811 square feet.

They added a kiln to dry 100,000 square feet of lumber at a time.

Each month 10 carloads of lumber were received by railroad cars on the railroad spur that served local industry on the west bank of the Rock River.

It’s amazing that this building that was built 50 years after Oregon was founded by John Phelps is standing today and, of course, now is a shopping mall.

between Third and Fourth Streets and his homestead located at 301 S. Third St. The mercantile building bears his name F.G. Jones on top of the building.

F.G. Jones also built the first dam, the Electric Light and Power Co. and owned and operated a cereal mill located north of the piano factory.

He lived in the brick home located at 301 S. Third St.

They were married on March 23, 1957, in Tacoma, Washington.

Harold and Joyce have two children: Bradley (Janette) Folkers of Polo, and Marilyn (the late Brian) Ely of Toulon.

They also have seven grandchildren: Kevin (Renita) Folkers, Keith Folkers, Janelle Folkers, Jarod (Tenneille) Ely, Jenna (Matthew) Bennett, Ethan Ely, and the late Bradon Ely. They also have five great-grandchildren: Hunter, Jonathan, Lydia, Ariella, and Esma Ely. They will be celebrating with their family at a private gathering.

The Mt. Morris Senior Center and the Let Freedom Ring committee will be holding an Adult Easter Egg Hunt on the Campus in downtown Mt. Morris on Saturday, April 9.

This Egg Hunt is only for those over the age of 18.

Only 200 tickets will be sold.

Participants will need to bring a flashlight and something to carry their eggs in.

Here is how it works: • Registration will be at the Mt. Morris Band Shell from 7 to 7:40 p.m. Last minute instructions will be given at 7:40 p.m. and the hunt will begin at 7:45 p.m. sharp.

• Each person will be allowed to find a certain number of eggs. Each egg will have a number. Some of the eggs will have winning numbers. The people who find those eggs will be able to choose a prize from the prize table.

There also will be golden eggs hidden with numbers that will coincide with larger prizes. Prizes will be awarded for winning eggs, golden eggs and a door prize at the end of the evening.

• No alcohol will be allowed on the hunt grounds, but food and refreshments will be available to purchase at Mullarkey’s Bar and Grill, The Idle Hour and The Campus Café.

“All are welcome to support the Senior Center and our Let Freedom Ring Festival at this fundraiser,” said Melissa Nicoholson, senior center director.

Donations sought for Chana School Museum sale March means “Spring Madness” – even if you’re not a basketball fan.

“You can go mad cleaning out that clutter and unused items for the 2022 annual sale to benefit the 1883 Chana School Museum,” said organizer Connie Stauffer. “We have been stuck at home for months during the pandemic. Now get your mind off 20202021 and focus on the positive idea of making space at your home by sorting, organizing, and gathering of unwanted items for this year’s annual rummage sale. Your donated items may be a treasure to others.”

This year’s benefit sale will be held Friday and Saturday, June 3- 4 at the Oregon Coliseum, located at the corner of N. Fourth Street and Franklin Street in Oregon. Sale times are: Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“This annual fundraiser brings in usually enough funds to pay the expenses for the museum for a year.

After these past two years where the museum was either closed or limited to visitors, funds are greatly needed. You can make a difference by donating big and small items for this fundraiser,” Stauffer said.

“We are not able to take items right now. We ask that you focus on cleaning out your home and garage. If you haven’t worn an article of clothing in the last 10 years most likely you won’t ever again so get rid of it. If you haven’t used those extra tools, bikes, lamps, furniture, dishes, etc. then consider donating them to help the old schoolhouse museum,” she said.

The school is the location for many school field trips where the students dress in 1800s style clothing and experience a whole day of education and traditions from that era in rural Illinois.

The Oregon Woman’s Club’s Antique Show will be back in business this weekend following a two-year, Covid-caused hiatus.

The popular show will be held Saturday and Sunday, March 26-27 at the Blackhawk Center, 1101 W. Jefferson St. in Oregon.

The show will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

More than 40 vendors have reserved spaces to show their wares.

Popular features will be back as well including crystal and china repair both days and antique appraisals on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a charge of $5 per item.

There will also be door prizes, concessions, and plenty of free parking.

The Blackhawk Center is handicap-accessible. Admission is $6 per person at the door.

“The club members are excited about the return of the antique fair this year. The fair is the club’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and not being able to hold it has made it hard to support a number of local service organizations the way the club would like They are hoping to see their regular visitors and plenty of first-timers too,” said Nancy Bartels, club member.

Since 1922, the Oregon Woman’s Club has been lending a hand to support numerous community-centered organizations from the VFW and the Friends of the Library to Serenity House, Hope of Ogle County, Winning Wheels, and the Rock River Center.

Born: December 24, 1927 in Green Bay, WI Died: March 16, 2022 in Fremont, MI Mrs. Lois A. Collaer, age 94, died on Wednesday, March 16, 2022 at Green Acres Assisted Living in Fremont, Michigan.

She was born on December 24, 1927 in Green Bay, Wisconsin to Emil and Sadie (Hallam) Nelson. Lois married Glenn Collaer on November 22, 1951 in Green Bay, and he preceded her in death on November 15, 2021. She was a long-time member of Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Oregon, IL., where she was a choir member and involved in other church activities. Lois enjoyed her children, grandchildren, homemaking, sewing and working at the Sears catalog store in Oregon, IL. During their retirement, the Collaers traveled by RV throughout the U.S. and into

Mexico. She was an avid Green Bay Packer Fan. GO PACK! Survivors include three children: Kristina (Richard) Ruffini of Michigan, Marcia Collaer of Vermont, Jeff (Rebecca) Collaer of Michigan; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Her daughter, Mary Beth Villarreal-Collaer, along with her brothers Warren and Dewey Nelson predeceased her.

The funeral service was held on Tuesday, March 22, 2022 at Kroeze-Wolffis Funeral Home in Fremont, Michigan. Entombment was at the Allouez Catholic Cemetery and Chapel Mausoleum in Green Bay. Freeport Police donate retired vests to Ukraine The Freeport Police Department is donating 33 retired Kevlar vests to Ukraine to “help keep their citizens safe as they defend their homes and country”, officials announced in a Tuesday press release.

The vests, declared as surplus by the Freeport City Council on March 21, are past their insurance expiration

and are unable to be used by Freeport police officers, the release said.

“We are thankful that we can assist the Ukrainian people in safeguarding their families and homes,” said Freeport City Manager, Randy Bukas.

These ballistic vests will be shipped to the citizens of Ukraine with no cost to the City of Freeport. The Freeport Police Department joins several other Ill inoi s police depar tments like McHenry, East Dundee, and Orland in donating to this cause.

Construction work on the Illinois 251 bridge has started. The bridge is south of Illinois 72 in Davis Junction, crossing the Soo Line Railroad. It will be closed for the duration of construction, which includes replacing the bridge deck and other repairs. The repairs are expected to be completed by Oct. 1.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra times for trips through the area.

Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changing conditions and signs in the work zone, refrain from using mobile devices, be alert for workers and equipment, and obey the posted speed limits.

The Illinois Department of Transportation is planning on improving more than 3,535 miles of highway and 9 million square feet of bridge deck as part of the Rebuild Illinois capital program over the next six years, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year 2 of the project include approximately $5.2 billion of improvements statewide on 270 bridges, 3,020 miles of highway and 428 additional safety improvements.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF ACTIVITY March 15 Lashawn Love, 41, of Rockford, was arrested at 6:16 p.m. for driving while license revoked after a traffic stop in the 1000 block of Illinois Route 251. Love also was cited for following too closely. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

March 16 Devante Wesley, 21, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license suspended after being stopped for speeding on Illinois Route 64 near Oregon. He was also wanted on an outstanding Ogle County warrant.

Wesley was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Cale J. Sandell, 35, of Oregon, was arrested for domestic battery after deputies responded to a physical domestic disturbance at an address on Rogene Drive in Oregon at approximately 5:48 p.m. Sandell was taken into custody without incident, transported to the Ogle County Jail and held with no bond.

Ethan Rogers, 52, of Leaf River, was arrested at 7:30 p.m. for driving while license revoked and on an in-state warrant after a traffic stop in the 10400 block of Illinois Route 26. Rogers also was cited for illegal

window tint and expired registration. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

March 17 Meosha Adams, 33, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license revoked after being stopped for speeding on Interstate 39 near Monroe Center. Adams was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Angel Speracino, 19, of Rockford, was arrested for no valid driver’s license after being stopped for speeding on Interstate 39 near Monroe Center. Speracino was released on an I-Bond and given a future court date.

Austin Platzer, 28, of Nebraska, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol. At approximately 4:30 p.m., deputies received a driving complaint of a semi-truck and trailer in the area of Illinois Route 2 south of Oregon.

Deputies and Oregon police searched the area and located the vehicle. A traffic stop was conducted after the commercial motor vehicle was observed committing several driving infractions. Platzer also was cited for illegal transportation of alcohol and improper lane usage. Platzer was transported to the

Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Benjamin Spana, 37, of Rochelle, was arrested at 8:12 p.m. for driving while license after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 mile marker 110. Spana also was cited for improper lighting (one headlight). He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Cassandra Ruiz, 29, of Rockford, was arrested at 8:57 p.m. for driving with no valid license after a traffic stop in the 17000 block of Illinois Route 72. Ruiz also was cited for illegal window tint and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Ruiz was released on an I-Bond and given a later court date.

March 19 Jahashi Hutton, 28 of Carpentersville, was arrested at 6:19 p.m. for aggravated driving while license revoked after a traffic stop near the intersection of Illinois Route 64 and Interstate 39. Hutton also was cited for driving while license revoked, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and no front registration. Hutton was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Craig Kehl, 49, of Ottawa, was arrested for aggravated fleeing to elude a peace officer, aggravated driving while under the influence

of alcohol, an outstanding Ogle County warrant and aggravated driving while license revoked.

Deputies attempted to stop Kehl’s vehicle at approximately 9:30 p.m. near the intersection of Illinois Route 64 and Interstate 39, but Kehl failed to stop and fled southbound on Interstate 39 in an attempt to evade deputies.

Deputies pursued the vehicle and, with the assistance of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, were able to stop the vehicle using stop sticks near mile marker 83 in Lee County.

Kehl also was cited for driving while under the influence of alcohol, improper lane usage, speeding 26-34 mph over the limit and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Kehl was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond. Lee County deputies and Illinois State Police District 1.

March 21 Corey Craycraft, 26, of Leaf River, was arrested for aggravated battery - victim 60 years or older (Class 3 felony) - and resisting a peace officer after deputies responded to a disturbance in the 500 block of East Third Street in Leaf River at approximately 12:29 a.m. Craycraft was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held pending an appearance before a judge.

Investigation leads to BB gun at Forreston High School

Three students were removed from the Forreston Junior/Senior High School on March 18 after police responded to a report of a student possibly possessing a weapon.

“On March 18, the Forreston Police Department, with the assistance of the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department, responded to the Forreston High School for a student possibly in possession of a weapon,” a post on the Forreston Police Department’s Facebook

said. “While the officers were responding to the school, school administrators located the weapon, which was discovered to be a BB gun.”

Forreston Police Chief Chris Thiel said the two high school students and a junior high student were removed from the school and have been referred to the Ogle County State’s Attorney’s Office. He said the BB gun was a handgun.

“There was no threat to the safety of the Forres-

ton High School students or the community,” Thiel said.

“The school sent out notifications to parents about the incident.”

The school was under a “hard lockdown” while police investigated the report.

A hard lockdown means that no one is allowed to move to different locations inside the school until the investigation is completed, Thiel said.

OREGON POLICE Oregon Police Chief Shawn Melville reports the following police activity.

March 14 Torrez C. Jamison, 18, of Chicago, was arrested at 9:22 p.m. for no valid driver’s license. Jamison was also issued a citation for speeding, 45 mph in a 30 mph zone. Jamison was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

These violations occurred in the 600 block of N. 4th Street.

March 15 Luis A. Baez-Ortega, 33, of Rockford, was issued a citation at 7:12 a.m. for disobeying a traffic control device. This violation occurred

at the intersection of W. Washington and 4th Streets.

Uriel Moreno, 32, of Rockford, was arrested at 6:03 p.m. for driving while license suspended. Moreno was also issued a citation for speeding, 42 mph in a 30 mph zone. Moreno was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred in the 600 block of N. 4th Street.

March 16 At 12:55 p.m., the Oregon Student Resource Officer (SRO) issued a city citation to Kenton D. Comer, 18, of Mt. Morris, for violating Ordinance 6-84, possession of

March 17 At 7:30 p.m., police responded to the 100 block of N. 6th Street for a hit and run that had just occurred where a parked 2021 Dodge belonging to Culligan Water, Dixon, was struck by a 2010 Toyota driven by Nicole M. Mason, 39, of Oregon. Mason was arrested for leaving the scene of a property damage accident and issued a citation for improper lane usage. Mason was transported to the Ogle County Jail. There were no

injuries.

March 20 Xena M. Schick, 24, of Rockford, was issued a citation at 1:02 a.m. for no valid registration. This violation occurred in the 100 block of N. River Road.

One parking citation and six verbal warnings issued during the week March 14-20.

STATE POLICE March 18 Jorge L. Sanchez, 25, of Rochelle, was stopped for no registration light and improper window tint at 7:56 p.m., on Interstate 39 southbound at milepost 111 in Ogle County. He was charged with unlawful possession of cannabis (more than 500 but less than 2000 grams), possession of cannabis with the intent to deliver (more

than 500 but less than 2000 grams), driving while license suspended, and unlawful transportation of alcohol.

Sanchez was also wanted on an Ogle County warrant for failure to appear for dangerous drugs and a Lee County warrant for contempt of court. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

treynolds@shawmedia.com An aggressive approach at the plate and some strong pitching led the Dixon softball team to a win over Forreston in its season opener Monday afternoon.

Every hitter in the Dixon lineup reached base at least once, and the Duchesses took an early lead and tacked on a few runs later in a 6-2 win over Forreston at Reynolds Field.

“We were so aggressive, and that’s what we want to do this year,” junior first baseman Anna Kate Phillips said. “We watched the pitcher a lot, and we knew that she was throwing outside. She had spin, but we really locked in. The first pitch we saw that we liked, we hit it.”

Coming back off an injury, Phillips led the charge for the offense with three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. Arianne Smith, Sam Tourtillott and Elle Jarrett also drove in runs, and Jarrett – also returning from an injury that caused her to miss all of 2021 – struck out 11 and walked just one in the win.

After Jarrett worked around a leadoff walk in the top of the first, Smith led off the bottom with a bloop single down the right-field line, and went to second when it was misplayed. Phillips followed with an RBI single, then Tourtillott smacked an RBI double to right to score Phillips; Tourtillott was thrown out on a perfect relay throw from right trying to stretch

But that was all Jarrett (1-0) surrendered in the circle. She struck out the side around one-out baserunners in the second and fourth innings, and allowed one earned run and five hits in a complete-game victory.

“Defensively, we played lights out. We had a nice relay to third base to throw a girl out, and we made a lot of plays today. You couldn’t ask any more of our defense,” Snider said. “I’d like to see us be a little more aggressive at the plate, but you’ve got to give it to them. That’s a good pitcher, and a good team.

“We want to see good pitching, especially here at the beginning of the season, to see what we’re made of. I think our pitching did a great job, and we plugged some hits together. They just got some more hits strung together than we did.”

I admit it, I have a love-hate relationship with basketball

A

s I watch way too much of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, I’ve come to the conclusion that I have a love-hate relationship with the sport.

When I was in seventh grade, I was on cloud nine after making the junior high traveling squad. The next year, dejection reigned as I missed the cut and was relegated to intramurals.

My career never blossomed in high school, eventually transitioning to team statistician. Realization finally set in that unlike most other sports where success could be had through hard work and diligence, basketball required talent and athleticism. That didn’t seem fair at the time.

Mixed in with a twinge of envy, there was a sense of admiration for the gifted few that could play. As much as I wanted to, it wasn’t meant to be.

Still, basketball has a special place in my heart, its gyms brimming of nostalgia and serving as a respite from a chilly winter evening. To this day, my all-time favorite in-person experience as a sports fan was in jam-packed bleachers for a DePaul at NIU basketball game in 1979.

I have never lost my interest for basketball, but it has wavered over the years. Lack of fundamentals and court

I don’t particularly care for the style of play (either fouls on drives to the basket or 3-point attempts) that has evolved over the years, but can’t dispute the tremendous athleticism demonstrated by the collegiates and pros.

There is a mystique in the Madness that is the NCAA tournament. Like a Greek tragedy, a team’s own flaws may be its demise. Better yet is the underdog like St. Peters that does the damage.

But with unrelenting commercial breaks and tedious play reviews, I get frustrated watching.

I’d also like to claim the politics soured me on pro basketball, but if that were truly the case, I wouldn’t have been watching the NFL. Since attending my first game nearly 60 years ago at St. Joseph-Ogden where dad was coaching, I have

seen good and bad with basketball.

Certainly, there are plenty of memories for me as a reporter on high school courts all over this part of the state.

However, those evenings spent covering games appear to be a thing of the past, just like my playing time ended eons ago.

So where does that leave a person like me with such an emotional investment in basketball? Two weeks ago, it left me in an unlikely place.

With the NCAA conference tournaments and the IHSA boys state finals in full swing, I attended the junior college nationals championships at Rock Valley College.

When it comes to pecking order in basketball hierarchy, the junior college game is at the lower rung. I would bet nearly everyone reading this didn’t even know such an event was taking place.

I didn’t know it was until I saw a Facebook post from a dear friend from high school who planned to be there to support a nephew playing on an outof-state team.

Hmm, I wondered, should I go and watch?

It was frigidly cold at the time, gas was $4.49 a gallon and wouldn’t the junior college game be boring com-

pared to big time D-I ball.

All stupid reasons not to go and thus, it was off the Rock Valley for some “hoops.”

That Friday evening renewed my hope in basketball.

Maybe it was not having any expectations, maybe it was seeing wellplayed game without TV timeouts, maybe it was the environment of a gym instead of being home alone that night, maybe it was the chance to catch up with an old friend and see the joy shared by other family members of the nephew.

I had no stake in the game, but soon found myself cheering for his team, the Dallas North Lake Blazers. Not only did they win by one point, but came back the next night and won the championship in overtime.

As I watched these junior college kids play far from the limelight that is the IHSA or NCAA, I was completely content to be where I was.

At its core and no matter where it is being played, basketball truly is a wonderful game.

Omnibus bill sends billions to Illinois science, energy

The $1.5 trillion omnibus spending bill that is headed to President Joe Biden’s desk pours billions into Illinois in the areas of energy and science, according to a breakdown of appropriations listed by U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin.

Chief allocations are:

Fermilab, DuPage County

• $1.078 billion for the Office of Science’s High Energy Physics Program, which funds 90% of operations at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory.

• Fermilab gets $176 million for its long baseline neutrino facility, $90 million for a proton improvement plan and $10.25 million for the construction of an integrated engineering research center.

Argonne National Laboratory, DuPage County

$2.3 billion for the Office of Science’s Basic Energy Services, which funds 40% of Argonne’s operations.

• Within that amount, $101 million is provided for the photon source upgrade and $160 million for its leadership computing facility.

• Exascale Computing also will receive $129 million to deliver applications and software to three computing systems, including one at Argonne.

Great Lakes

• $500,000 to begin a comprehensive study of the Great Lakes and another $500,000 to reevaluate the Chicago shoreline for areas affected by climate change.

C-PACE offers fixed rate funding for energy-efficient investments, Whiteside economic development director says

Owners of commercial businesses and contractors in Lee, Ogle and Whiteside counties have a new incentive for going green.

All three counties recently opted to participate in the Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy financing program, or C-PACE. C-PACE provides long-term, fixed-rate funding to private building owners for energy efficiency, renewable energy, water conservation, electric vehicle charging and resiliency projects to be installed in existing or new commercial properties.

The program will be administered by the nonprofit Illinois Energy Conservation Authority.

C-PACE financing, available in 37 states and the District of Columbia, stimulates local economies by funding the upfront capital for PACE projects that

may lower operating costs, generate clean energy, instill resiliency and promote water use conservation in commercial properties.

“We are always looking for ways to assist our businesses, and C-PACE is clearly an innovative financing tool that will help business that are incorporating clean, efficient energy solutions in their new or renovated facilities projects,” Gary Camarano, the county’s economic development director and enterprise zone administrator, said in a news release Tuesday announcing the program’s availability.

“Giving them the ability to receive lower interest rates and longer pay-backs for clean and efficient energy investments, is a win for all involved - the businesses, the community and the environment.”

In many cases, the energy savings will be more than the loan payments, said Andy Shaw, who is an administrator of the Lee Ogle Enterprise Zone and a staff member at the Blackhawk Hills Regional Council.

“Old buildings are just leaky,” Shaw said on Tuesday, noting that the program can benefit all kinds of existing structures, as well as those under construction.

Contractors are advised to learn about the program so they can pass on that information to business owners who may be looking for cheaper ways to finance their projects, he said, adding that C-PACE loan terms typically run for 20 years or more, far longer than most commercial loans.

Whiteside is the latest county to join the program; Lee and Ogle signed on within the last six months or so. Because it is so new to the region, no local projects have signed up yet, although several have expressed interest, Shaw said.

Fami ly Nat ure Adven tures (FNA) gives adults and children the opportunity to interact in the natural setting of Nygren Wetland Preserve while learning about nature, historical, cultural and arts related topics.

NLI presents FNA as a way to reach individuals and families so they can fall in love with nature and learn to appreciate and understand there are actions they can take in their own community to protect nature so it will be healthy for future generations to experience.

Family Nature Adventures is a free admission event that is open to anyone and tailored to families with children ages two to 14.

The event will be held at Nygren Wetland Preserve, 3714 W. Rockton Rd., Rockton, on Saturday, June 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

FNA is a bilingual event with promotional and event material printed in English and Spanish.

Spanish speaking volunteers will be on hand the day of the event to help with translation. NLI’s website can be translated to Spanish by clicking on the “Español” button in the top right corner.

Event participants can walk around on their own, ride a wagon, and go on a guided tour of the prairie.

Children will earn a Junior Naturalist Badge and Certificate after visiting at least six of the learning stations and adults will receive a gift after visiting the stations.

Learning station topics will include: prairies, wetlands, turtles,

butterflies, Bluebirds, migrating birds, woodlands, Native Americans, mammals, native bees and wasps, and more.

Registration is requested for this free event and can be made after May 1, by visiting the NLI website calendar at naturalland.org.
