or more than a hundred years, Starved Rock has been the premiere road trip destination in LaSalle County. With over 13 miles of trails and 18 canyons, there’s plenty to explore. Here’s seven stops you should be sure to visit on your next trip to the park!
STOP 1: The Starved Rock Visitors Center The Starved Rock Visitor Center is the perfect place to start your State Park adventure! Here, you’ll find interactive educational displays, free videos on the park’s history, hiking maps and a bookstore! While you’re there, be sure to check out Trailhead Concessions and Gifts for a great selection of hiking provisions.

STOP P 2: Starved ed Rock R k From the Visitors Center, take a short 0.3-mile hike towards the park’s namesake, Starved Rock. The summit is home to one of the best views in the entire park, where you can marvel at the Illinois River, or watch birds plunge for fish near the base of the Illinois Waterways Lock and Dam.
STOP 3: St. Louis Canyon Just a few minutes to the west of the Visitors Center, off IL-178, you’ll find the parking lot for St. Louis Canyon. At the end of this 0.4-mile hike you’ll be treated to a beautiful box canyon, complete with a tall waterfall and hidden alcove that runs behind it. Even when falls aren’t in season, the canyon’s towering walls of intricate sandstone make for quite the sight.

French Canyon STOP 4: French Canyon One of the easiest hikes in the parks, just so happens to lead to one of the most beautiful canyons! Located just 0.4-miles southeast of the Visitors Center, French Canyon offers a towering 45-foot tall waterfall during the rainy season, and beautifully eroded Saint Peters sandstone all year round. After a rainfall, admire the colorful streaks left on the canyon walls by the mineralrich water. STOP 5: LaSalle Canyon Located about a mile from the Parkman’s Plain parking lot, LaSalle Canyon boasts a wide picturesque canyon and jutting sandstone shelf, suspended 20 feet off the ground. Best of all, your hike to canyon will wind you along the Illinois river, providing you with a great view of the river and chance to see some rare birds and foliage.
Water Cruise STOP 6: Water Cruise or Trolley Tour If you’re looking to get out of the canyons and take a break from hiking, or if you have a party member looking for a less active excursion, you can reserve a spot aboard Starved Rock’s Eagle One Water Cruise (running Jun. – Oct.) or take a Trolley Tour (running year-round). These narrated tours merge history and sighting seeing for truly one-ofkind view of Starved Rock. STOP 7: The Starved Rock Lodge and Conference Center After a full day of hiking and sightseeing, cap your trip off with a stay at the Starved Rock Lodge and Conference Center. This historic hotel nestled in nature, features a Cliffside panorama of the Illinois river, an indoor pool complex, on-site restaurants and a beautiful rustic lounge. You can choose from historic lodge accommodations, spacious hotel rooms or charming log cabins.

eyond the borders of Starved, there’s even more exiting nature to explore in LaSalle County! Here are five other hiking destinations you should be sure to visit on your trip.
MATTHIESSEN STATE PARK: Canyons, streams, prairie grass, dense forests and a perpetually flowing waterfall. What more can you ask for? This geological marvel is located just a stone’s throw away from the Starved Rock State Park, offering a wide array of unusual vegetation and a chance seeing some amazing wildlife up close.
BUFFALO ROCK STATE PARK: The bluff outcroppings at this park unmatched views you’ll find of the Illinois River, while it’s winding prairie trails take you past one of the nation’s largest pieces of landscape art, Michael Heizer’s Effigy Tumuli. While

you’re there, be sure to pay a visit to Pebbles and Cocoa, the two American Bison that call the park home. I&M CANAL: The 15-mile stretch of canal that runs from Ottawa to LaSalle is one of the best bicycling destinations in the entire state. You’ll pass three historical towns, astounding scenery all while hiking or biking right along the bank of the storied I&M canal. Now, you don’t even need to bring your own bike to explore the trail, reserve an app-powered rental bike outside LaSalle’s Lock 16 Visitors Center.

Boyington, the famed Chicago Water Tower architect, LaSalle’s Hegeler Carus Mansion has remained virtually unaltered since it’s completion in 1876. This 150+ year old, 22-room, Italianate mansion has been meticulously restored to the 19th century, after decades of being used as the town’s public library. Take a journey back in time aboard the I&M Canal’s “Volunteer,” a mule-pulled 1840’s replica canal boat. Period dressed guides regale audiences with tales of the canal, as your boat takes a one-mile trip up to the Little Vermillion aqueduct and back. Be sure to drop by the Lock 16 visitors center after your trip, for more history of the canal and to grab a bite to eat in their wonderful café.

Activities L ooking for a quick winter getaway or a fun way to spend holiday break close to home? LaSalle County offers an exciting assortment of wintertime activities, from the thrilling to heartwarming.
ICE CLIMBING: Every year, hundreds of experienced climbers flock to Starved Rock State Park to spend a day scaling enormous frozen waterfalls with little more than an anchor line, an ice axe and a helmet. Climbers must have prior experience ice climbing, or charter an experienced guide. All ice climbing is done at the climber’s risk, they are required to sign in at the park’s self check-in station prior to their climb, and once again upon exit. CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: Matthiessen State Park offers over six miles of beautiful treelined cross-country skiing trails. Best of all, the park sports a ski rental kiosk (weather allowing) from December through March. The rental cabin is located near the shelter and fort at the Park’s Dells entrance, the rental stand is open Saturdays and Sundays when snow is on the ground from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

EAGLE WATCH: While a few eagles can be spotted around LaSalle County all year, the arrival of bald eagles in mid-winter is a sight to behold. These majestic birds roost on Plum Island, located directly across from Starved Rock State Park. An excellent view of these Eagles can be found at the observation deck of the Illinois Waterways Visitors Center, where you can use high powered binoculars to see them in flight. CELEBRATION OF LIGHTS: Looking to get into the holiday spirit? Head to LaSalle County’s premiere holiday light show, located at LaSalle’s Rotary Park. You’ll experience more than 230 dazzling light displays and dozens of fun animated LED installations at this drive-through holiday destination. Pairing classic holiday tunes, broadcast over a private radio channel, and dozens of illuminated larger than life characters and and scenes. This sure to be family outing to remember!

aSalle County features some of the State’s best scenic drives and outdoor activities for soaking in the changing season. Here are three must see sight-seeing opportunities for your next Fall Color trip!
GUIDED HIKE OR TROLLEY TOUR AT STARVED ROCK STATE PARK Starved Rock offers seasonal guided hikes, lead by experienced naturalists. These experts will take you to some of the best Fall color photo-ops throughout the park on a mild one-hour group hike. The park also offers trolley tours, for those who’d like the see the leaves without having to hike into the park.
BOUTIQUE SHOPPING LaSalle County offers some wonderful boutique shopping opportunities to get you out and about during the Fall, like Ottawa’s tree-lined shopping district and historic downtown Streator. LaSalle’s shopping district is located just a short walk away from the I&M Canal, while Utica is just a stone’s throw from Starved Rock State Park. Rotary Dog Park
STARVED ROCK Many blogs cite Starved Rock as one of the top destinations for hiking with your dog in the Midwest. The River Trail, that’s conveniently located off the recently restored Parkman’s Plain lot, is one of the more popular canine hikes. The dog-friendly outdoor Veranda at the Lodge even offers a special “doggy menu”. Dogs must be leashed inside the park. ROTARY DOG PARK This park, located just off I-39, offers two fenced in runs, for small and large sized dogs. This park is only a ten-minute drive from the entrance of Starved Rock, and even closer to the I&M Canal. You’ll find several restaurants in nearby LaSalle and Peru that offer dogfriendly patio seating.

RIVER RUN DOG PARK This brand-new dog park is located inside Heritage Harbor, just a stone’s throw from the beautiful Illinois River. It features two pens for added safety, one for under 30lbs and one for over 30lbs. After your trip to the park, head over to the nearby Red Dog Grill where you can get your furry friend a special treat.
