Here’s a short rundown on what the 2018 festival offers. Be sure to review the schedule of events for times. The heart of Autumn on Parade is its Farmer’s Market and Craft Fair, located on the Ogle County Courthouse Square in downtown Oregon. Craft booths surround the historic Ogle County Courthouse and surrounding streets and offer handmade, homemade and homegrown items as well as many other kinds of unique items. On Saturday, antique tractors and classic cars will be on display at Oregon Park East, just across the Rock River. Owners of Olivers, Farmalls, and Deeres are more than willing to share the history of their tractors. Focus House is coordinating this year’s car show. Lunch will also be available on site. Visitors can also tour the Chana School on Saturday, also located at Park East. This unique two-room school, built in 1883, is celebrating its 135th birthday this year!! Following this year’s theme “It’s Magical”, entertainers on Saturday on the Courthouse Square will delight the crowd with their comedy routines, a bubble show, and juggling/balancing shows. Marking the third year at the festival is a Donut Eating Contest on Saturday. If you or your children love eating donuts, here is your chance to

Yum, Yum...Food Court offers plenty of options Most booths run by local organizations Autumn on Parade’s Food Court is the perfect place for festival visitors to find that perfect something to eat, or drink.

The Food Court, located on Jefferson Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets, features a variety of great-tasting food specialties benefitting not-for-profit local civic and service organizations. The weekend menu includes breakfast items such as apple fritters, cider donuts, and coffee followed later in the day by pork chop and ribeye sandwiches, funnel cakes, bratwurst, gyros, walking tacos, and other fine food items. The majority of the food vendors located on the food court are operated or sponsored by local, not-forprofit, civic or service organizations. In some instances, the Food Court is the major fund raising event of the year for many of the agencies and groups. The Autumn on Parade Committee works with all of the civic and service organizations to make sure there are no duplication of food items. For their 48th year, Oregon Boy Scout Troop 52 will be once again be selling hot dogs, a festival food staple that they first offered in 1970, the first year the festival was held. The troop has since added hamburgers, cheeseburgers, nachos, and baked potatoes, with a variety of toppings, to their stand. In 1974 the Oregon Lion’s Club started selling pork chops to festival visitors. To meet the demands

Heart of festival is Farmers’ Market & Craft Fair The heart of the Autumn on Parade festival, is its ever-popular Farmers’ Market/Arts & Craft Show, held Saturday and Sunday on the lawn and streets surrounding the historic Ogle County Courthouse.

This year’s show is shaping up to be one of the largest in recent years. “Starting last fall our six-person committee has gone to many other craft shows trying to bring in quality homemade items to this years craft show” said Lisa Boehle, co-chairman of the Farmer’s Market and Craft Show.

Homemade scarecrows were just some of the items for sale in the 2017.

Through cooperation with Ogle County and city officials, more than 180 booths will be located on the courthouse lawn and surrounding city streets offering a variety of arts and crafts ranging from handmade wood items to homemade baked breads. Crafter booths will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. A list of vendors and map of the festival grounds appears on pages 8 and 9 in this publication.

City Street Department Superintendent Mike Bowers will be riding near the front of the Harvest Time Parade on Sunday, Oct. 7. When he first got the word that he had been selected, Bowers, 55, said he didn’t quite believe it. “I was looking around for the TV cameras,” he said with a grin. “I really wasn’t expecting anything like that. Once I realized it was for real, it was quite humbling that just doing your day-today job would qualify for an honor like this.” He gave credit to his co-workers and those that have helped him in his 35-plus years with the city. “There’s so many more people who have been a part of it,” he said. “All my co-workers have gone the extra mile for me, and I have had several mentors over the years who have shaped who I am and my work ethic. I’m accepting the award on behalf of them.” Less that a month after the annual festival, Bowers will be retiring from his post, a career he enjoys. “My favorite part of the job is when somebody has a concern and we can help them and they show their appreciation,” he said. Sometimes he’s the go-to-guy even when it

High School in 1980. He was working full-time for Dave Martin when former Street Department employee Wayne Suter mentioned that the city was taking applications. “Things worked out and I’ve been here ever since,” Bowers said. Much of his on-the-job training came from none other than Suter. “I learned a lot from him,” Bowers said. Besides Bowers, the Street Department includes three other full-time employees and part-time seasonal workers. Along with snow-plowing in winter, their jobs include street maintenance, sidewalk maintenance and replacement, equipment and truck maintenance and repair, small re-paving projects, line and parking lot striping, painting curbs and manhole and catch basin tops, mowing more than eight acres, as well as weed control. Bowers has no definite plans for retirement, at least not for the first year. Because of being on call virtually around-theclock, especially in winter, he said he hasn’t always been able to plan on holidays and other family events. “I’m going to start taking care of that,” he said.

Pinecrest Community is AOP festival’s 2018 Unit of Honor Pinecrest Community is being honored as the 2018 Unit of Honor at Autumn on Parade’s Harvestime Parade on Sunday, Oct. 7 for its century and a quarter of providing care for the elderly.

“We’re very pleased to be selected for this honor,” said Pinecrest Executive Director Ferol Labash. “We’ve been serving the area community since 1893. It’s a great privilege to be selected.” The facility marked its 125th anniversary on Aug. 11 with a day-long community celebration that included a worship service, music, and family-friendly events. Labash said the facility is a life care community that includes Pinecrest Manor, offering intermediate and skilled nursing care; Pinecrest Village, with assisted and independent living apartments and homes; Pinecrest Terrace for those needing memory care; and Pinecrest Grove, with cottages for active adults and a community center. “Once you join our community, we will provide care throughout your life,” Labash said. Today Pinecrest has 200 residents and a staff of 190 who work three shifts. Its commitment to quality care has been demonstrated through Pinecrest’s long time achievement of the highest five-star rating with the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services and an almost unheard of deficiency free inspection with the federal surveyors in the spring of 2017. Pinecrest got its start in 1878, when Church of the Brethren congregations expressed growing concerns for members who were without children or relatives to care for

them. They proposed buying a farm, and building a home for the poor. The Brethren Home or “the old people’s and orphan’s home” opened on Feb. 3, 1893 and became a haven for aged adults and orphans. The original home was a two-story 19-room brick home on Brayton Road, where the cottages of Pinecrest Village currently stand. The Brethren Home was a working farm – the residents who were able shared in the work of raising livestock and growing hay for the animals, and they cultivated and harvested fruits and vegetables which were used to feed residents. Throughout the early 1900s, the home was expanded, and the orphanage was moved to a separate location and then eventually closed in 1923. Recommendations were made in 1957 for a new facility to be built in three stages over a period of 10 years. The church’s District Board approved the construction of a new home for approximately 100 residents at an estimated cost of $750,000. A groundbreaking was held in 1961 and on Sunday, April 13, 1963, volunteers moved 25 residents from the Old Home into the new Pinecrest Manor, which an area newspaper referred to as resembling an ultra-modern luxury hotel. The Manor was just completed when the board began plans for 3,000 square-foot addition that included a dining-activities area, a serving kitchen, a physician’s exam room, Xray room and storage rooms. This addition was completed in 1973.

Independent living units were built in 1973 and 1983 on the northwest corner of the Pinecrest campus. A 24-unit apartment home complex was built in 1986, with a second wing added in 1988. These adjoin the Manor through the entrance and lobby.

Pinecrest Terrace, a unit for those needing memory care was added in 1998. The first duplex home at Pinecrest Grove, independent cottage homes for active seniors aged 62 or better, was completed in December of 2006 and this community center building was completed in 2008.

We have all heard of the traditional 50/50, but in 2016 the Autumn on Parade Committee wanted to do something a little different than everybody else and decided on giving away a little more money, 10% more to be exact. “After many group discussions the Autumn on Parade Committee decided to introduce the 60/40,” said AOP member and 60/40 raffle chairman Dave Boehle. “It will be exactly the same as a 50/50 only the winning ticket drawn will receive 60% instead of the 50% traditionally given.” In 2017, the winner received $13,000. This year’s winning ticket will be drawn on Sunday, Oct., 7 after the Harvest Time Parade. Tickets cost $5 for book of six and can be purchased from any Autumn on Parade Committee member or these businesses prior to the festival: Stillman Bank (Oregon), Harvard Bank (Oregon), Joanne’s Total Image Salon, Snyders, Chili Pepper, Messies, Breakers, Jays, Red Stone Salon & Spa, Pepper Mill, Kunes Country, Merlin’s, Shell, Chana Tap, The Hunt Club, Simply Home, Cork & Tap, Tavern N Third, Athletico, and Aero Ale House (Byron). “If your favorite business sells the winning ticket they will win a cash prize that comes out of our 40%. So please support Autumn on Parade and our local businesses,” said Boehle. Tickets will also be sold the weekend of Autumn on Parade by committee volunteers. The winner does not have to be present to win.

The school originally stood in the town of Chana seven miles from Oregon and was set to be torn down in 1998. But a group of local citizens formed the Chana School Foundation to move the building to a new location, restore it to its original appearance, and operate it as a living history museum. “This fairy tale story began with a building that was going to be destroyed, because it was in the way of progress. It had been used in a variety of ways, since the closing of the Chana School District in the late 1960s,” said Connie Stauffer, who along with Chana native Duke Thomas, spearheaded the school’s move and restoration. After five years of fund raising, grant writing and thousands of hours of volunteer labor, the Chana School Museum opened in the Fall of 2003. In December 2005, the school was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. “This was an amazing recognition for the school and to everyone who had volunteered their energy to help make the school a landmark—not only for Oregon, but for the state of Illinois and our nation,” said Stauffer. “There are only two schools with two classrooms on the National Register from Illinois and the Chana School is the only two-room wooden school on the register from Illinois.” The Chana School is in the among the 1% of the buildings on the National Register. This is a very unique recognition.”
