This year’s event, Oct. 5-6, marks the 49th anniversary of this community festival in scenic Oregon, Illinois. Here’s a short rundown on what the 2019 festival offers. Be sure to review the schedule of events for times. The heart of Autumn on Parade is its Farmer’s Market and Craft Fair, located on the Ogle County Courthouse Square in downtown Oregon. Craft booths surround the historic Ogle County Courthouse and surrounding streets and offer handmade, homemade and homegrown items as well as many other kinds of unique items. On Saturday, antique tractors and classic cars will be on display at Oregon Park East, just across the Rock River. Owners of Olivers, Farmalls, and Deeres are more than willing to share the history of their tractors. Focus House is coordinating this year’s car show. Lunch will also be available on site. Visitors can also tour the Chana School on Saturday, also located at Park East. This unique two-room school, built in 1883, is celebrating its 136th birthday this year!! Following this year’s theme “A Salute to the Black Hawk Statue”, entertainers on Saturday on the Courthouse Square will delight the crowd with their comedy routines, a bubble show, and juggling/balancing shows. A Create-A-Canvas event will be held at Franklin Street pub on Saturday night. Those participating will receive step-by-step instruction on how to paint a keepsake painting that reflects the fall festival. On Saturday, the Fun Zone Carnival, located in the Oregon Coliseum, offers a place for kids to play some games and win some prizes.

Debbie Dickson is AOP’s 2019 Guest of Honor This year’s Autumn on Parade Guest of Honor is certainly no stranger to the festival and all its activities.

Longtime AOP President and volunteer Debbie Dickson will be honored Sunday, Oct. 6 during the Harvest Time Parade, an event she announced and narrated for many years. Dickson, 61, served on the Autumn on Parade Committee for 20 years, the last 10 of those as its president. She also served as director of the Ore-

gon Chamber of Commerce for almost seven years and was a Chamber Ambassador before that. “We chose Debbie because of her many years of service to Autumn on Parade and with the Oregon Chamber of Commerce. “We appreciate her dedicated support of AOP for so many years,” said AOP Committee President Marseyne Snow. “She does a great many things for the City of Oregon.” Dickson said she was surprised by the

recognition. “This completely blind-sided me,” she said. “It is sincerely an honor to be asked.” She said she considers it a privilege to serve the community she has called home since 1979. “I believe very strongly in the community of Oregon,” she said. “ We all have the responsibility to help out in every way we can. Public service is just a community being family.”

VOP and American Legion are Units of Honor Two local organizations that are celebrating milestone anniversaries this year have been chosen as this year’s Autumn on Parade Units of Honor.

The Village of Progress and the American Legion will be recognized in the Harvest Time Parade on Sunday, Oct. 6 for 50 and 100 years of service respectively. “We’re just delighted to be asked,” said VOP Executive Director Brion Brooks. “We’ve already begun deciding how we can participate along with our people. They’re excited to be part of it as well.” “We are very honored,” said John Tuttle, Commander of Oregon American Legion Post 97. He said the group plans to have its float with seats in the parade, pulled by the post’s Jeep, which once belonged to former post commander T. Richard Day. “We plan on inviting all veterans and their families to ride on the float in the parade,” Tuttle said. Village of Progress celebrated its golden anniversary with an open house in August. Robert Brooks, one of the founding board members, launched the successful 708 initiative in Ogle County in 1968 to help fund services for people with developmental disabilities and mental illness. The Village of Progress was founded at that time to provide those services. Over the years it has grown in the scope and nature of the services offered. In its infancy, the Village provided day care to children with developmental disabilities — something that neither Illinois nor the federal government provided. Special education wasn’t created until passage of the Education for the Handicapped Act in 1975. The Village broke new ground in Illinois again in the 1970s when it

American Legion Posts in Ogle County built its current training center. It’s believed that the Village was the first nonprofit in Illinois to construct a building specifically dedicated as a training center for those with disabilities. Over the years the Village reached out beyond its four walls. In 1975 they launched the Village Cleaning Service as a way of providing competitive, integrated employment to those with disabilities. The Yellow Bird also launched that year, a cooperative effort with the local seniors group. The project acted as both a storefront for Village-produced goods and a location for seniors to meet and socialize. In 1980 the Yellow Bird transitioned into the Rock River Center, which remains a vibrant part of the community. Since the beginning, the Village has looked first toward entrepreneurial activities whenever possible. That mindset has continued into the present with the opening of the Village Bakery in 2017. The Village of Progress Foundation, created in 1990, has been a strong partner in helping to advance the Village’s mission. At present, the Village of Progress serves the needs of more than 90 men and women in Ogle County. The American Legion is celebrat-

The military veterans’ organization was founded on March 15, 1919, in Paris, France, by 1,000 officers and men of the American Expeditionary Forces and was chartered on Sept. 16, 1919 by the U.S. Congress. Tuttle said the Oregon post was originally founded in 1919 and named the Shirley Tilton American Legion Post 97 in honor of the first Oregon soldier killed in World War I. In more recent years, the post was disbanded for a few years due to insufficient members and was then rechartered as Oregon American Legion Post 97. “Otherwise, we would be celebrating our centennial, too,” Tuttle said. The American Legion got its start when returning World War I veterans who wished to continue the camaraderie and relationships that they found during wartime built the foundation of the organization. It is a service organization that

supports veterans and local charitable organizations, provides honor guards for veterans funerals, sponsors leadership opportunities for high school age boys through its Premier Boys State program, operates youth sports programs, and performs ceremonies for Memorial Day, Veterans Day and Pearl Harbor Day. Legionnaires also take part in numerous community functions, fundraisers and educational events, among them American flag education and code awareness. The American Legion’s four core pillars “promoting veterans affairs and rehabilitation, national defense, Americanism and children and youth” were born in aftermath of World War I and continue today, in a world still engaged in conflict. Legion membership is open to those who have served on active duty and received an honorable discharge or are currently serving in one of the Armed Forces.

Autumn on Parade’s Food Court is the perfect place for festival visitors to find that perfect something to eat, or drink. The Food Court, located on Jefferson Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets, features a variety of great-tasting food specialties benefitting not-for-profit local civic and service organizations. The weekend menu includes breakfast items such as apple fritters, cider donuts, and coffee followed later in the day by pork chop and ribeye sandwiches, funnel cakes, bratwurst, gyros, walking tacos, and other fine food items. The majority of the food vendors located on the food court are operated or sponsored by local, not-forprofit, civic or service organizations. In some instances, the Food Court is the major fund raising event of the year for many of the agencies and groups. The Autumn on Parade Committee works with all of the civic and service organizations to make sure there are no duplication of food items. For their 49th year, Oregon Boy Scout Troop 52 will be once again be

AOP craft fair is a shoppers’ delight The heart of the Autumn on Parade festival, is its ever-popular Farmers’ Market/ Arts & Craft Show, held Saturday and Sunday on the lawn and streets surrounding the historic Ogle County Courthouse. This year’s show is shaping up to be one of the largest in recent years. “Starting last fall we have gone to many other craft shows trying to bring in quality homemade items to this years craft show,” said Lisa Boehle, co-chairman of the Farmer’s Market and Craft Show. Crafter booths will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Through cooperation with Ogle County and city officials, more than 180 booths will be located on the courthouse lawn and surrounding city streets offering a variety of arts and crafts ranging from handmade wood items to homemade baked breads. This year’s booth layout is a bit different than previous years, due to the construction of the new Ogle County Jail and the subsequent closure of the 100 block of South Sixth Street. “This year we will have booths located in the county-owned parking lot at the corner of Fifth and Washington streets,” said Boehle. “We wanted to keep as many booths as possible near the courthouse square.”

We have all heard of the traditional 50/50, but in 2016 the Autumn on Parade Committee wanted to do something a little different than everybody else and decided on giving away a little more money, 10% more to be exact. In 2017, the winner received $13,000. In 2018, the winner received $7,280.16. This year’s winning ticket will be drawn on Sunday, Oct., 6 after the Harvest Time Parade. Tickets cost $5 for book of six and can be purchased from any Autumn on Parade Committee member or these businesses prior to the festival: Stillman Bank (Oregon location), Harvard Bank (Oregon location), Central Bank (Oregon location), Joanne’s Total Image Salon, Snyders, Chili Pepper, Messies, Breakers, Jays, Red Stone Salon & Spa, Kunes Country, Merlin’s, The Other Side, Shell, Chana Tap, The Hunt Club, Cork & Tap, The Tipsy Hog, W@sh, Blackhawk Nutrition, Sledgehammers, and Simply Home. Tickets will also be sold the weekend of Autumn on Parade by committee volunteers. The winner does not have to be presA list of vendors and grounds map Booths at Autumn on Parade Farmers’ Market/Craft Fair offer everything from flowers appear on pages 8 and 9. ent to win. to unique handmade items.

• FOOD COURT Continued from Page 5 selling hot dogs, a festival food staple that they first offered in 1970, the first year the festival was held. The troop has since added hamburgers, cheeseburgers, nachos, and baked potatoes, with a variety of toppings, to their stand. In 1974 the Oregon Lion’s Club started selling pork chops to festival visitors. To meet the demands of others, they have added brats and chicken sandwiches. The Oregon Knights of Columbus has also been selling their funnel cakes since 1974. Additional longtime food vendors are the Forreston Sheep Association with their gyro sandwiches, augmented by chips and coffee. Farming Heritage, Inc. has used wood to heat a large kettle to provide kettle corn to those who like to munch as they walk through the farmers market area. The Oregon High School Band is once again selling their walking tacos with several toppings available. An additional favorite food

vendor is the Ogle County Beef Producers with their signature beef brisket and ribeye steak sandwiches. In recent years festival attendees have been able to enjoy Lulu’s roasted corn, Mexican sandwiches and the sweet tasting churros topped with cinnamon. Triple P BBQ will return again and offer a pulled pork sandwich or a BBQ sundae by adding pulled pork, to cole slaw and baked beans in a cup. The Polo Knights of Columbus will be selling coffee cakes to go with a cup of coffee; the Mt. Morris Moose who have brought back hand dipped corn dogs that people were continuously asking about along with chicken tenders, cheese fries and onion rings; and the Oregon Wrestling Club with fried cheese curds, cider donuts and now fried pickles to delight the taste of the festival visitors. For those who enjoy Mexican food, Hector’s Cocina of Conover Square in Oregon, will sell chicken/ beef tostados, chips with salsa or queso, Nachos covered with chicken

or beef and sour cream, and fresh fruit waters on the Food Court. Most food vendors will have water and a variety of sodas for sale. The food court is conveniently located on Jefferson Street adjacent to the Ogle County Courthouse Square, next to the Farmers’ Market and Craft Show. Additional food items can be found at the car show at Oregon Park East and also at Stronghold’s Olde English Faire.

Tour the historic Chana School Museum Oct. 5 Reading, writing, and arithmetic are just three staples awaiting Autumn on Parade visitors at the historic Chana School, located on River Road in Oregon Park East. This unique two-room school, built in 1883, is celebrating its 136th birthday this year!! It will be open for tours on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The school originally stood in the town of Chana seven miles from Oregon and was set to be torn down in 1998. But a group of local citizens formed the Chana School Foundation to move the building to a new location, restore it to its original appearance, and operate it as a living history museum. “This fairy tale story began with a building that was going to be destroyed, because it was in the way of progress. It had been used in a variety of ways, since the closing of the Chana School District in the late 1960s,” said Connie Stauffer, who along with Chana native Duke Thomas, spearheaded the school’s move and restoration. “Little had been done to keep the old building standing. It had not been painted in 60 years. Was it an

But we had a vision of what the old Chana School could do for education and history of our area if it were saved and restored.” After five years of fund raising, grant writing and thousands of hours of volunteer labor, the Chana

School Museum opened in the Fall of 2003. In December 2005, the school was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. “This was an amazing recognition for the school and to everyone

who had volunteered their energy to help make the school a landmark— not only for Oregon, but for the state of Illinois and our nation,” said Stauffer. “There are only two schools with two classrooms on the National Register from Illinois and the Chana School is the only tworoom wooden school on the register from Illinois.” The Chana School is in among the less 1% of the buildings on the National Register that were moved. This is a very unique recognition. This unique V-shared building is not your typical rural schoolhouse. Inside visitors will find cloak rooms with curved walls, decorative pressed tin walls and ceilings and fancy carved woodwork painted in Victorian colors. One classroom has been restored to how it would have looked in the mid 1890s complete with period desks, pump organ, antique lithographs and a decorative wood stove. The other classroom contains exhibits about life in the late 1800s and information about rural education in northern Illinois. The Chana School is open by appointment by calling 815-732-6807 or 815-732-2447.

This year’s show will be held at Oregon Park East on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Show chairman Stan Eden said past shows have featured more than 50 outstanding exhibits representing Oliver, Farmall IH, Minneapolis Moline, Allis Chalmers, J.I. Visitors will see restored and sometimes, unrestored farm tractors as well as gas engine exhibits. Owners are invited to register by 9 a.m. on Saturday morning. Exhibits of lawn and garden tractors are also welcome. Steel wheeled tractors will not

Great food, prepared by The Chana School Foundation, will be available at the site. Recognition and Awards will be presented at 3:30 p.m. at Oregon park East. Participants are invited to enter the parade on Sunday but that entry must be completed on a separate form. Love a parade? Get ready to enjoy Sunday, Oct. 6 If you love a parade, you won’t want to miss Autumn on Parade’s Harvest Time Parade, slated for Sunday, Oct. 6 in Oregon. The theme for this year’s parade is “A Salute to the Black Hawk Statue”. “We chose this theme for this year’s festival in hopes that the Black Hawk Statue restoration would be completed, ” said Marseyne Snow, chairman of the parade and president of AOP. “Work is progressing slower than was planned when we chose the theme but it is still nice to recognize such a great landmark of the Rock River Valley”. In addition to local entries, the ever-popular South Shore Drill Team and the Jesse White Tumblers have been booked for this year’s parade. A post parade show by the crowd
