AUTUMN ON PARADE

2

Welcome back to Autumn on Parade!! After last year’s event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s event, slated for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 2-3, marks the 50th anniversary of this community festival in scenic Oregon, Illinois. Hence the festival theme this year is “Rockin’ 50 Years”. Here’s a short rundown on what the 2021 festival offers. Be sure to review the schedule of events for times. The heart of Autumn on Parade is its Farmer’s Market and Craft Fair, located on the Ogle County Courthouse Square in downtown Oregon. Craft booths surround the historic Ogle County Courthouse and surrounding streets and offer handmade, homemade and homegrown items as well as many other kinds of unique items. On Saturday, antique tractors and classic cars will be on display at Oregon Park East, just across the Rock River. Owners of Olivers, Farmalls, and Deeres are more than willing to share the history of their tractors. Focus House is again coordinating this year’s car show with the Hub City. Lunch will also be available on site.

Autumn on Parade President and Harvest Time Parade Chairman Marseyne Snow confers with volunteer Alycia Snow during the 2019 Harvest Time Parade. Visitors can also tour the Chana School on Saturday, also located at Park East. This unique two-room school, built in 1883, is celebrating its 138th birthday this year!! On Saturday, there will be fantastic entertainment for kids of all ages by a festival favorite, Jason Kollum, who will be doing juggling routines and stilt-walking.

On Saturday and Sunday, the Fun Zone, located around the Coliseum will include a petting zoo and inflatables. A magician will also join the group on Saturday. And this is all free to kids! New this year, on Saturday only, will be a beer garden featuring Burn N’ Bush and Blue Steel bands. This will be located on Jefferson Street between 3rd and 4th streets. Hungry? Don’t forget to stop by the Food Court, which includes a variety of choices from booths run by local not-for-profit organizations. Sunday morning starts with a 5K race and a onemile fun run. At 1 p.m., on Sunday the Harvest Time Parade makes its way through the downtown and past the courthouse square. The Jesse White Tumblers and South Shore Drill Team are just two of the crowd favorites scheduled to return this year. And don’t forget to buy your official AOP 60/40 raffle ticket and maybe win some cash. For more information on any of the events visit our website at autumnonparade.org and Like us on Facebook.

50 Years of Autumn on Parade Imagine for a moment the task of encapsulating the essence of 50 years of a much loved and highly anticipated community festival. An event whose seeds have taken root in the hearts of countless volunteers who have donated time, expertise, and often their own dollars to create an experience that brings families and friends together year after year after year. Then add the tens of thousands of annually attending participants, who share the typical busyness of life, yet dedicate this weekend to a regathering. A reconnection to simple fun, good food, and heartfelt reminiscences. To begin the process, we open and delve into box after box after box of archives, revealing log books, dusty trinkets and memorabilia, crinkled newspaper clippings, creased and fading images of times gone by. Much of the information is familiar to some, and depending on your age and relationship to Oregon and this festival of ours, you may have had a hand in it somewhere along the way … Byron Hutchins moved to Oregon in 1969. He served as an advisor with the University of Illinois Extension Service helping to create several committees for the betterment of small communities. One of these committees was for a festival. He was joined by other local leaders- Ray Appler, James Barnes, Ron Fafnis, Anne Jones and Cecelia Zimmerman. A contest was held to name the event, and Kathryn Gelander won a $25 Savings Bond gifted by the Oregon Woman’s Club with her entry of “Autumn on Parade”. Seven booths lined up on Third Street on a rainy day in 1970 which has grown into an average of 180 booths surrounding courthouse square. Determination, some dreaming and creative input-perhaps sprinkled with a few lofty ideas- has led to many additions and changes along the way.

ABOVE LEFT: This entry in the 1973 parade joked about it being deer season in Ogle County. ABOVE: Three of Autumn on Parade founders Byron Hutchins, Anne Jones, and Jim Barnes, were honored in the 1995 parade. FAR LEFT: Governor Jim Thompson visited the festival in 1986 and was greeted by this woman during the parade. LEFT: Judy Ford Johnson appeared on the reviewing stand in 1973. She was Miss Illinois in 1968 and Miss America in 1969. We’ve seen pig scrambles, canoe rallies, a fishing derby, Civil War Encampments, Quilt Shows, Big Wheel Races, the Duck Dash, a Tug Across the Rock, chainsaw carving, a Bellamy Brothers concert complete with Chuck Wagon dinner and square dancing, many years of the Antique Tractor Shows and Auto Classics, as well as our ever fabulous parade. We shine a light on our local history like Chana School and the Depot Restoration, and use our phenomenal parks and their services to support the needs of an event this size. Local civic and not for profit organizations form the backbone of the Food Court, and then put their hard earned profits right back into our community. City and Emergency services work closely to keep us

safe, creating a seamless transition from managing a population of 3,800 to an instant 75,000 passing through the community throughout the festival weekend. We can share historical data, and oh so many photos from our hold it in your hands albums to our tuck it in your shirt pocket flash drives. But the essence of Autumn on Parade? That’s the spirit of the people. The people who work tirelessly all year round to create this one of a kind experience and who are then joined by the people who attend, filling this event with life and our community with the spirit of kinship and kindness. This is Autumn on Parade!

Visitors to the 50th annual Autumn on Parade don’t have to look very far to find that special treat to satisfy their appetite. The Food Court, located on Jefferson Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets and in an adjacent parking lot, features a variety of great-tasting food specialties offered by not-for-profit local civic and service organizations. The weekend menu includes breakfast items such as apple fritters, cider donuts, and coffee. Later in the day, pork chop and rib-eye sandwiches, funnel cakes, bratwurst, gyros, walking tacos, and other fine food items are offered. Most of the food vendors located on the food court are operated or sponsored by local, not-for-profit, civic or service organizations. In some instances, the Food Court is the major fund raising event of the year for many of the agencies and groups. The Autumn on Parade Committee works with all of the civic and service organizations to make sure there are no duplication of food items. The food court is conveniently located on Jefferson Street adjacent to the Ogle County Courthouse Square, next to the Farmers’ Market and Craft Show. Additional food items can be found at the car show at Oregon Park East. 2021 Food Court • Boy Scout Troop 52 - Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Nachos, Baked Potatoes, Chips • Farming Heritage – Kettle Corn • Forreston Sheep Assoc. - Gyros and Chips

Harvest Time Parade steps off at 1 p.m. on Sunday If you love a parade, you won’t want to miss Autumn on Parade’s Harvest Time Parade, slated for Sunday, Oct. 3 in Oregon. The theme for this year’s parade is “Rockin’ 50 years”. “We chose this theme for this year’s festival to celebrate the festival’s 50th year,” said Marseyne Snow, chairman of the parade and president of AOP. In addition to local entries, the ever-popular South Shore Drill Team and the Jesse White Tumblers have been booked for this year’s parade. Awards are given for best business entry, best use of festival theme, best float, antique tractor, color guard, junior high band, senior high band, 4-H group, Scout/youth group, senior high pom pon, senior high color guard, senior high drum major, senior high drum line, queen, and best animal unit. Fees for commercial and individual political entries are $50 for each unit. The parade begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday and travels through downtown Oregon. For more information, contact Snow at mareseynesnow@comcast. net or call 815-341-5559. An entry form and parade route map is available at www.autumnonparade.org.

Ruthe, Massey named AOP’s 2021 Guests of Honor Woods Equipment Company selected as Unit of Honor After a year off, Autumn on Parade returns with not one, but two Guests of Honor — Charlene Ruthe and Jim Massey. “I was totally floored. Totally floored,” Ruthe said of her selection. “When he [Dave Boehle, AOP board member] came to my house to let me know, I was like, ‘Oh, this is a joke.’ He said, ‘No, I’m serious. You worked in the community your whole life.’” Ruthe, 56, is a lifelong resident of Oregon. She worked for the city as city clerk for 26 years and, prior to that, she worked at the Rock River Bank. For the last 20-25 years, Ruthe has volunteered for the AOP. Her duties have included assisting callers with questions, distributing brochures and pamphlets and helping direct lineup for parade entrants. “I never really got to see the parade the last few years because we helped do that [behind-the-scenes stuff],” she said. “But it was fun, because you could see everything that was going to be in the parade.” She enjoys the behind-the-scenes work and isn’t normally a fan of being “the one in the front row that says, ‘Hey, I’m over here,’” so the selection was kind of overwhelming, Ruthe said. Still, it’s an honor to be chosen, she said.

“There’s a reason I’ve stayed in Oregon,” Ruthe said. “I absolutely love the community, the people.” Massey, 78, also said his selection as a Guest of Honor was an unexpected, but “great honor.” The Oregon resident has volunteered at AOP for 40 years. “I volunteer my time for Autumn on Parade these 40 years and I never charge for any of my labor at all,” he said. “It’s all been free because I think it’s good for our community and I like to do things to help our community. I like to see our community survive.” Charlene Ruthe Massey, owner of Massey Electric, helps set up electrical services for AOP’s food court on Jefferson Street. This year, there also will be vendors in the jail parking lot, he said. AOP pays for Massey’s employees to be on standby during the event. Massey said he’s able to do all these things because of his wife, Pat Massey. “My partner in crime, we’ve been married 57 years and she’s been a devoted and supportive person in my life,” he said. “That’s why I’m able to do

these things for Autumn on Parade — because my wife supports it too, very much so.” Woods Equipment Company was selected as the 2021 Unit of Honor. For the past 75 years, Woods has been manufacturing tractor attachments in Oregon, Illinois, to help customers “Get After It” in the many places Woods products are used, such as mowing roadsides, maintaining pastures and waterways, shredding crops and countless other applications. Jim Massey “We’re a proud member of the Oregon, Illinois Chamber of Commerce and support our local community by providing exceptional career opportunities for a wide variety of manufacturing jobs,” a company spokesperson wrote in an email. “As we celebrate our 75th anniversary, we would like to thank the residents of Oregon, Illinois for their continued support and look forward to many more years of community engagement.” Visit woodsequipment.com for more information and current employment opportunities.

Autumn on Parade is excited to host the First Beer Garden in the history of the festival. Many Patrons of AOP have requested a Beer Garden in the past, so the AOP Committee decided to add this event to the 50th Anniversary Celebration. The Beer Garden will be located in the 300 block of S. Jefferson Street, between 3rd & 4th streets. This will be a one day event, Saturday Oct. 2. You must be 21 to enter. A cover charge will be collected, which will also include your first beverage. The ever popular local band “Burn

N’ Bush” will be performing from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Another local favorite, “Blue Steel”, will perform from 3-6 p.m. “This highly requested event is possible thanks to our Sponsor for the Beer Garden: Martin & Company Excavating,” said AOP Committee Member Dave Boehle. “Our local pub Tipsy Hog will be providing the beverages. “Grab your favorite treat from our newly expanded Food Court, then come sit down, enjoy a few beverages with some great music. Hope to see Burn n’ Bush (above left) and Blue Steel (above right) will perform on Saturday, Oct. 2 in the you all there!,” said Boehle. beer garden, located in the 300 block of Jefferson Street, in front of the Oregon Library.

Spaghetti supper is Oct. 2 at the fire station The Oregon Fire Department will be the place to eat Saturday night during the 2021 Autumn on Parade festival. On Saturday, Oct. 2, the department will host a spaghetti supper from 4-7 p.m. at the station, located at 100 West Washington Street. Volunteer firefighters will serve the dinner in the main bay of the fire station.

Free will donations will be accepted for the supper which includes, spaghetti, salad, rolls, and beverages.

Library book sale is Oct. 1, 2 Friends of the Oregon Library will have a book sale on the library lawn again this year during Autumn on Parade. The sale will actually start on Friday, Oct. 1 and run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., continuing on Saturday, Oct. 2.

Held on the front library lawn, located at 300 Jefferson Street, the sale will run both days from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. or until books are sold out, whichever comes first. Books will be sold by the bag: $4 for all the books you can fit into a good-sized bag and $10 for all the books that fit into a red library tote bag. Tractor classic offers red and green antique delights Whether you like John Deere green or Farmall red the 28th annual Autumn on Parade Antique Tractor Classic and Gas Engine Exhibit should be just what the tractor doctor ordered. This year’s show will be held at Oregon Park East on Saturday, Oct. 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Show chairman Stan Eden said past shows have featured more than 50 outstanding exhibits representing Oliver, Farmall IH, Minneapolis Moline, Allis Chalmers, J.I. Case, Fordson and John Deere. “Max Armstrong’s Farmall tractors will be on exhibit at the show on Saturday and in the parade on Sunday,” Eden said. “We will also have gasoline engines and machinery and lawn tractors exhibited on Saturday.” The tractor classic showcases the area’s farming industry and offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy the farming heritage of the community. Visitors will see restored and sometimes, unrestored farm tractors as well as gas engine exhibits. Owners are invited to register by 9 a.m. on Saturday morning. Exhibits of lawn and garden tractors are also welcome. Steel wheeled tractors will not require the use of planks. Antique

Historic Chana School offers tours on Saturday Reading, writing, and arithmetic are just three staples awaiting Autumn on Parade visitors at the historic Chana School, located on River Road in Oregon Park East. This unique two-room school, built in 1883, is celebrating its 138th birthday this year!! It will be open for tours on Saturday, Oct. 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The school originally stood in the town of Chana seven miles from Oregon and was set to be torn down in 1998. But a group of local citizens formed the Chana School Foundation to move the building to a new location, restore it to its original appearance, and operate it as a living history museum. “This fairy tale story began with a building that was going to be destroyed, because it was in the way of progress. It had been used in a variety of ways, since the closing of the Chana School District in the late 1960s,” said Connie Stauffer, who along with Chana native Duke Thomas, spearheaded the school’s move and restoration. “Little had been done to keep the old building standing. It had not been painted in 60 years. Was it an eyesore? Yes! But we had a vision of what the old Chana School could do for education and history of our area if it were saved and restored.” After five years of fund raising, grant writing and thousands of hours of volunteer labor, the Chana School Museum opened in the Fall of 2003. In December 2005, the school was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. “This was an amazing recognition for the school and to everyone who had volunteered their energy to help make the school a landmark—not only for Oregon, but for the state of Illinois and our nation,” said Stauffer. “There are only two schools with two classrooms on the National Register from Illinois and the Chana School is the only two-room wooden school on the register from Illinois.” The Chana School is in among the less 1% of the buildings on the National Register that were moved. This is a very unique recognition. This unique V-shared building is not your typical rural schoolhouse. Inside visitors will find cloak rooms with curved walls, decorative pressed tin walls and ceilings and fancy carved woodwork painted in Victorian colors. One classroom has been restored to how it would have looked in the mid 1890s complete with period desks, pump organ, antique lithographs and a decorative wood stove. The other classroom contains exhibits about life in the late 1800s and information about rural education in northern Illinois. The Chana School is open by appointment by calling 815-979-2093 or 815-732-2447. The school offers simulation field trips for school classes throughout the year. The museum can also be used for weddings, meetings, and workshops.

The historic two-room Chana School was built in 1883 and is celebrating its 138th birthday this year. The school contains a museum about early schools in Ogle County. It will be open for tours during the Saturday of Autumn on Parade.

Runners compete in the 2019 Autumn on Parade 5K. This year’s event is Sunday, Oct. 3 and includes a One-Mile Fun Run. Both events start and end on Hawk Drive by the Blackhawk Center.

Autumn on Parade 5k, Fun Run is Sunday, Oct. 3 The 16th annual Autumn on Parade 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run is back! “Spread the word and come join us on Sunday, Oct. 3, for another spectacular run, and then stick around town for the other activities offered by the Autumn on Parade Festival and parade,” said Angie Mahoney, race volunteer. One-mile runners will begin the day at 8 a.m. followed by the 5K participants at about 8:30 a.m. Registration for the 1-Mile Fun Run is $10. “This year, all participants will receive an Autumn on Parade 1-Mile Fun Run participant ribbon. To be guaranteed a shirt, please register no later than Sept. 17,” Mahoney said. As for the 5K, all the same amenities that race goers have come to love will be available again such as music, premium long-sleeve tech shirts, postrace food, awards to first, second and third in 16 age groups, overall awards, USATF-certified course, and timing by Tri-3 Sports Timing. A printout of the course can be found at www.autumnonparade.org under the 5K page. Strollers will be allowed on the race course but must start after all runners. No pets, bicycles or scooters allowed on the course. “Back again this year is the 5K Team Challenge, so grab your co-work-

ers, friends or family and sign up. Teams can be a minimum of four and a maximum of 15 per team. The top four race times for each team are added together and the fastest team wins a first place plaque,” Mahoney said. Participants may use one of the three registration options to sign up for the event: online, mail-in form or race day. Preregistration by mail will be offered for forms received by Sept. 17 for a fee of $25 for 5K individual and 5K Corporate Challenge.

Again this year, Rockford Road Runners, Rockford Wildcat and Rock River Road Runners receive a discount when registering online with a fee of $22. Participants may also register online at runsignup.com by Oct. 2. The fee increases Sept. 1. Teams may also register online at runsignup. com by setting up their team name and password online for all members to register. Registrations after Sept. 1 through race day registration (7-8 a.m.) will

have a fee increase to $30 for individuals and the corporate/team challenge, and $27 for Rockford Road Runners, Rockford Wildcat and Rock River Road Runners. There will be an availability to register at the early packet pickup Oct. 2 from 2-5 p.m. at Oregon Elementary School in the Etnyre Gym and again on race day at the Blackhawk Center. No late registrations will be taken after 8 a.m. on race day so please arrive early to accommodate long lines and parking. Premium long sleeve T-shirts are on a first-come, first-served basis, so early registration is recommended. For preregistered participants, packet pickup will be available on Oct. 2 from 2-5 p.m. at Oregon Elementary School and on race day at the Blackhawk Center lobby from 7-8 a.m. “We are excited to announce that we will again partner with the Oregon High School cross country team. Without the generous help of the cross country team, coaches and the parents, race day would not be possible. Your support and commitment helps give back to the community in such a big way,” Mahoney said. Updates and changes are available on Facebook. For questions about the race, email us at aop5Krun@gmail. com.

Buy a 60/40 raffle ticket, help AOP and maybe win some cash We have all heard of the traditional 50/50, but last year the Autumn on Parade Committee wanted to do something a little different than everybody else and decided on giving away a little more money, 10% more to be exact. “After many group discussions the Autumn on Parade Committee decided to introduce the 60/40,” said AOP member and 60/40 raffle chairman Dave Boehle. “It will be exactly the same as a 50/50 only the winning ticket drawn will receive 60% instead of the 50% traditionally given.” This year’s winning ticket will be drawn on Sunday, Oct., 3 after the Harvest Time Parade. Tickets cost $5 for book of six and can be purchased from any Autumn on Parade Committee member or local businesses prior to the festival. The majority of the tickets are sold the weekend of Autumn on Parade by committee volunteers.
