“We are very honored to be recog nized by the Autumn on Parade festi val,” said Donna Fellows, Pegasus’ board of director’s president. “We are looking forward to seeing everyone during the parade.” Fellows helped re-established Peg asus in 1996 by overseeing the thera peutic horseback riding program and the purchase and development of the land on Carthage Road, southeast of Oregon.Pegasus provides therapeutic horseback riding to northern Illinois residents with physical, mental and emotional challenges. But in March, a strong wind ripped through southern Ogle County and, in a matter of minutes, significantly dam aged the main arena building. Five months later, the center still is reeling from the storm’s effects.

“We play baseball the way it was meant to be played,” said Ganymedes Captain, Mark Herman. “It was a game designed for exercise and plenty of exciting action for both the players and spectators…the rules of baseball have changed and evolved over the years from when it first started in the mid-1800’s”, Herman said.
During this year’s 2022 season, the club traveled to several unique away venues that included the Field of Dreams Movie Site in Dyersville, Iowa, Estabrook Park & Beer Garden in Mil waukee, Wisconsin, Mt. Assisi Con vent in Lemont, Illinois and Cantigny Park in Wheaton, Illinois.
The Ganymedes were also invited to the World Tournament of Historic Base Ball event at The Henry Ford Museum of American History Green field Village in Dearborn, Michigan in mid-August. This was the seventh time that the Oregon club has been invited to this prestigious 12-team tournament that features the best vin tage base ball clubs from five states. This is an extremely competitive event that attracts thousands of spec tators and is the highlight of the club’s season. So,what is a Ganymede? The name Ganymede was first linked to the City of Oregon when the famous journalist Margaret Fuller visited Oregon in 1843. During the city’s 4th of July cele bration, she observed an eagle drink ing from a spring on the bank of the Rock River and authored the poem “Ganymede to His Eagle” which was published nationally. Ganymede Spring and the City of Oregon became a tourist attraction. According to Greek mythology, Ganymede was a youth that was carried off by an eagle to Mt. Olympus to become the cup bearer to the gods. To learn more about the sport of vintage base ball, check out the Vin tage Base Ball Association at vbba.org.

Reading, writing, and arithmetic are just three staples awaiting Autumn on Parade visitors at the his toric Chana School, located on River Road in Oregon Park East. This unique two-room school, built in 1883, is celebrating its 139th birth day this year. It will be open for tours on Satur day, Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The school originally stood in the town of Chana seven miles from Ore gon and was set to be torn down in 1998.A group of local citizens formed the Chana School Foundation to move the building to a new location, restore it to its original appearance, and operate it as a living history museum.“Thisfairy tale story began with a building that was going to be destroyed, because it was in the way of progress. It had been used in a vari ety of ways, since the closing of the Chana School District in the late 1960s,” said Connie Stauffer, who along with Chana native Duke Thomas, spearheaded the school’s move and restoration. Little had been done to keep the old building standing. It had not been painted in 60 years. After five years of fund raising, grant writing and thou sands of hours of volunteer labor, the Chana School Museum opened in the Fall of 2003. In December 2005, the school was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The V-shared building is not your typical rural schoolhouse. Inside visitors will find cloak rooms with curved walls, decorative pressed tin walls and ceilings and fancy carved woodwork painted in Victorian colors. One classroom has been restored to how it would have looked in the mid 1890s complete with period desks, pump organ, antique lithographs and a decorative wood stove. The other classroom contains exhibits about life in the late 1800s and information about rural education in northern Illinois. The Chana School is open by appointment by calling 815-979-2093 or 815-732-2447.
“We were informed we had a ‘cap’ on our insurance,” she said. “In 2002, it cost us $150,000. Now that has dou bled in Officialsprice.”have looked into many dif ferent types of buildings, rather than the hoop (engineered building). “We’ve looked into everything from pole buildings, to metal build ings and our need for storage, but this [hoop] is the type of building we need,” sheMetalsaid. buildings are primarily used for storage and don’t have the ventila tion or floor suitable for the riding area. “We need a building that allows us to have a softer ground for our aging horses,” she said. “At this point we really have to rely on donations.” Pegasus Special Riders provides a variety of programming to benefit qualified individuals April through October weather permitting. Diveley is the organization’s only full-time employee. Volunteers help with daily chores from horse care, horse handling during lessons and fundraising events. Eleven horses were housed under the wooden haymow at the south end of the 62-foot-by-420-foot building when the storm hit. The horses and two cats that resided in the structure were not hurt. The wind pushed the north end of the building in, twisting and bending the large garage door. The “hoop” building was con structed in 2002. Its roof and sides con sist of a large tarp called a “coverall” that stretches over the steel frame. Sections of the tarp were torn from the frame and deposited nearby, while some sections remained on the frame with tears. Those gaps remain today.
