Celebrate Autumn on Parade’s 45th anniversary Greetings! 2015 marks the 45th anniversary of this community festival in scenic Oregon, Illinois.

Here’s a short rundown on what our festival offers.

The heart of Autumn on Parade is its Farmer’s Market and Craft Fair, located on the Ogle County Courthouse Square in downtown Oregon.

Here, craft booths surround the historic Ogle County Courthouse.

The booths offer handmade, homemade and homegrown items as well as many other kinds of unique items to purchase.

On Saturday, antique tractors and classic cars will be on display at Oregon Park East, just across the Rock River.

Owners of Olivers, Farmalls, and Deeres are more than willing to share the history of their tractors.

Focus House is coordinating this year’s car show. Lunch will also be available on site.

Visitors can also tour the Chana School on Saturday,

also located at Park East. This unique two-room school, built in 1883, is celebrating its 132nd birthday this year!!

Following this year’s theme “Flashback to the 1970s”, entertainers on Saturday on the Courthouse Square will include “John Travolta” and a “Disco Queen”.

Watch out for the Acrobatic Lounge Lizard around the courthouse lawn.

New Events for 2015!

New this year is a Donut Eating Contest on Saturday, on Jefferson Street, and a Create-A-Canvas event, held at the Oregon Coliseum before the Chamber of Commerce’s Autumn on the Vine event. Entry fees are charged for these events.

The Oregon Ganymedes will also be playing a vintage base ball game in the grass field near Jefferson Street.

Food Court Hungry? Don’t forget to stop by the Food Court, which includes a variety of choices from booths run by local not-for-profit organizations.

Olde English Faire Want to take a trip back to the Renaissance? Stronghold Camp and Retreat Center, once the home of Chicago Daily News owner Walter Strong, will host its annual Olde English Faire both days.

Tours of the Stronghold Castle will also be available as well as food and entertainment. Admission is charged for this event which is located about two miles north of Oregon, along Ill. 2.

Sunday morning starts with a 5K race and a one-mile

fun run. Elvis is scheduled to make an appearance at 11 a.m. on Jefferson Street.

Harvest Time Parade At 1 p.m., on Sunday the Harvest Time Parade, featuring 100-plus units, makes its way through the downtown and past the courthouse square.

The Jesse White Tumblers and South Shore Drill Team are just two of the crowd favorites returning this year.

South Shore will also perform a post parade show at the conclusion of the parade on Jefferson Street, in front of the Oregon Library.

Wrap up the weekend at the AOP Duck Dash.

Hundreds of ducks will be released for their swim to the finish line. Why not adopt one and cheer it on and Autumn on Parade president Marseyne Snow receives a donation check from Pat Donahue, Stillman Bank, the maybe win some cash!

AOP Food Court offers plenty of yummy choices

The Ogle County Beef Producers is one of the local not-for-proift organizations that has a food booth in the Autumn on Parade Food Court.

Firefighters spaghetti supper Saturday night

Visitors to the Autumn on Parade festival can take a shot at winning some cash while helping fund the event by purchasing a 50/50 raffle ticket.

Tickets will be available at the AOP Information Booth, located on the northeast corner of the courthouse square during the festival.

Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. Proceeds from the event help pay for operating costs and entertainment for the Autumn on Parade festival.

The Oregon Fire Department will be the place to eat Saturday night during the 2015 Autumn on Parade festival.

On Saturday, Oct. 3, the department will host a spaghetti supper from 4-7 p.m. at the station, located at 100 West Washington Street.

Visitors to the 45th annual Autumn on Parade don’t have to look very far to find that special treat to satisfy their appetite.

The Food Court, located on Jefferson Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets, features a variety of greattasting food specialties offered by not-for-profit local civic and service organizations.

The weekend menu includes breakfast items such as apple fritters, cider donuts, and coffee.

Later in the day, pork chop and rib-eye sandwiches, funnel cakes, bratwurst, gyros, walking tacos, and other fine food items are offered.

All of the food vendors located on the food court are operated or sponsored by local, not-for-profit, civic or service organizations.

In some instances, the Food Court is the major fund raising event of the year for many of the agencies and groups.

AOP’s Farmer’s Market and Craft Show is heart of festival 160+ booths on square, streets The heart of the Autumn on Parade festival, is its ever-popular Farmers’ Market and Craft Show, held Saturday and Sunday on the lawn and streets surrounding the historic Ogle County Courthouse.

And this year’s show is shaping up to be one of the

largest in recent years.

“Starting last fall our sixperson committee has gone to many other craft shows trying to bring in quality homemade items to this years craft show” said Lisa Boehle, co-chairman of the Farmer’s Market and Craft Show.

Through cooperation with Ogle County and city officials, more than 160 booths will be located on

the courthouse lawn and surrounding city streets offering a variety of arts and crafts ranging from handmade wood items to homemade baked breads.

Crafter booths will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

A list of vendors and map of the festival grounds appears on pages 8 and 9.

Library book sale Saturday, Oct. 3 Friends of the Oregon Library will have a book sale on the library lawn again this year during Autumn on Parade on Saturday, Oct. 3.

The sale, held on the front library lawn, located at 300 Jefferson Street, will

be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. or until books are sold out, whichever comes first.

Books will be sold by the bag: $3 for all the books you can fit into a good-sized bag and $10 for all the books that fit into a red library tote bag.

This eliminates the lines at checkout where the cost of individual books have to be added up.

All proceeds will benefit the library.

Flashback to the 1970s at the Harvest Time Parade If you love a parade, you’ll love Autumn on Parade’s Harvest Time Parade, slated for Sunday, Oct. 4 in Oregon.

The theme for this year’s parade is “Flashback to the 70’s”.

“John Travolta and The Lounge Lizard will be parading their skills on Sunday,” said Marseyne Snow, chairman of the parade. “We also have several bands some from area high schools and junior highs and others professional musicians like the Royal Airs and Sinful Saints.”

In addition, the everpopular South Shore Drill Team and the Jesse White

Tumblers have been booked for the event.

Back again this year is a post parade show by the South Shore Drill Team following the parade.

“South Shore is always a such a crowd favorite that we decided last year to have them stay a bit longer and do a show after the parade was over,” said Snow. “People really liked that so we’re doing the post parade show again on Jefferson Street in front of the Oregon library.”

Other entries include stilt walkers, a bubble buggy, circus wagon, antique tractors, 4-H youth groups, and commercial entries.

“We’re looking forward to seeing how Ogle County

residents use this year’s theme. Please get your entries in early so we can finish the parade line-up.

The deadline is in Sept. 15, but the earlier you get your entry in the better,” Snow said.

Awards are given for best business entry, best use of festival theme, best float, antique vehicle, antique tractor, color guard, junior high band, senior high band, 4-H group, Scout/youth group, junior high drum major, senior high pompon, senior high flag corps, senior high drum major, queen, and best animal unit.

Fees for commercial and individual political entries are $50 for each unit.

The South Shore Drill team from Chicago will march in the Harvest Time Parade on Sunday and then perform a Post Parade Show on Jeffferson Street following the parade. Here, the troupe performs at the 2014 festival.

The parade begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday and travels through downtown Oregon.

The Oregon Park District will be providing volunteers for the Fun Zone ticket booth again this year.

Retired Oregon Fire Chief is AOP Guest of Honor The 2015 AOP Guest of Honor is no stranger to riding in the Harvest Time Parade.

In the past, he’s been behind the wheel of a firetruck.

This time, however, retired Oregon Fire Chief Don Heller will be chauffeured down the parade route with nothing to do but sit back

and enjoy the ride.

Heller retired April 30 as fire chief after serving in the position for 14 years. In all, he was a volunteer fireman for 38 years.

A lifelong Oregon resident, Heller joined the department in 1977 when then-fire chief Jim Rosenbalm encouraged him to.

He was appointed a lieutenant three years later on the all-volunteer department, then became a captain, and finally chief in 2001.

Heller said he joined because he wanted to serve his community.

“I enjoyed the camaraderie of all the guys I went through all these years with, and I

Camp Lowden is Unit of Honor A well-known local camp that is the favorite place of many current and former Boy Scouts is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.

Camp Lowden seven miles south of Oregon has been chosen as the Unit of Honor for this year’s Harvest Time Parade on Sunday, Oct. 4.

Long time camp director Bruce Small said he was pleased the camp was chosen.

“I was very surprised and very, very pleased,” he said.

“We’re very honored,” said Emily Rinaldi, Program Director for the Blackhawk Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Founded in 1940, the complete service Boy Scout camp has 250 acres of wooded property surrounded by thousands of acres of state forest.

The camp celebrated its 75th anniversary this summer with a large reunion of Boy Scouts, leaders, and officials.

Small started working at the camp in 1979 and has been its director since 1979.

Now retired, he was a junior high teacher for 40 years.

He divided his time between the nine months in the classroom and the other three camping with Boy Scouts.

The Blackhawk Area Council, which includes nine counties in northern Illinois and three in southwestern Wisconsin, was given the chance in early 1940 to use 252 acres of woodland property owned by former Illinois Governor Frank O. Lowden.

Summer and year-round camping has been held at the site ever since.

In 1939, council officials had been seeking a permanent site to hold summer camps.

Lowden, who owned a large acreage of forest along the Rock River south of Oregon, invited three of

them to visit his property on Jan. 16, 1940.

They hiked over the snowcovered hills and found the perfect setting for a Scout camp.

Two days later, Lowden agreed to lease 80 acres to the council for 10 years for camping.

According to the Camp Lowden history, Lowden’s intention was to allow permanent camping on the 252 acres.

Camp Lowden was dedicated on June 16, 1940.

The camp currently offers four week-long Boy Scout session each summer, which is expanding to five weeks next year, in addition to day camps for Cub Scouts, the Woods of Webelos program, and National Youth Leadership Training.

Camp Lowden’s facilities can be rented for retreats and wedding.

Heller had planned to retire late last year when he and his wife Kathie moved to Byron.

to stay on for a few more months to help with getting a referendum passed April 7 to add an ambulance service to the fire department.

Voters passed the measure by a landslide 1,251 to 173.

“I feel pretty good about that,” he said.

Create your canvas at Autumn on the Vine!

The Oregon Chamber of Commerce’s Autumn on the Vine, held annually during Autumn on Parade weekend, will give participants the opportunity to let their paint brushes loose—under the direction of a professional.

Autumn on the Vine, the Chamber’s fundraising/ tasting event, will be held in conjunction with the festival’s new Create A Canvas on Saturday night, Oct. 3, in the Oregon Coliseum.

There are three options for ticket purchases this year: Wine Event only - $20; Create A Canvas only - $30; or the whole “package” for $50!

Tickets purchased for the Wine Event/whole package will receive 12 beverage/ tasting tickets for wine, craft beer, and specialty appetizers.

Those participating in Create A Canvas portion will receive step-by-step instruction on how to paint a keepsake painting that reflects the fall festival.

All the materials for the painting experience are included in the Create A Canvas fees.

“If you just want to enjoy Autumn on the Vine and not create a painting you are welcome to do that as well,” said Debbie Dickson, director of the Oregon Chamber of Commerce.

“Those tickets are $20 per person and includes food and 12 beverage tasting tickets, valued at $1 each for wine, craft beer, and specialty appetizers. Additional tasting tickets can be purchased at the event.”

Dickson said the Chamber is excited to partner with Autumn on Parade for this event.

“We like to keep our events interesting, change things up and continue to provide topnotch events for both our community and our visitors, particularly during Autumn on Parade,” said. “Having the opportunity to showcase art, which is a large piece of Oregon’s history, and

raise funds for a community project during the process, is extra special!”

Autumn on Parade President Marseyne snow agreed. “We thought this would be a unique way of celebrating Oregon’s rich history of artistic expression while having some fun too,” she said. “We are excited to be partnering with the Chamber for this event.”

Create A Canvas participants will begin at 4:30 p.m. The Autumn on the Vine event is from 5-8 p.m.

Autumn on the Vine/ Create A Canvas tickets go on sale Sept. 5 with a limited number available for this event.

Advance reservations for Create A Canvas are required and must be made by contacting the Oregon Chamber and paid for by Oct. 1.

Tickets for the Tasting Event only will be available at the door that evening.

Donut eating contest is new to Autumn on Parade festival If you or your children love eating donuts, here is your chance to do what you love and make money.

Casey’s general Store has teamed up with Autumn on Parade to present the festival’s first eating contest.

Four different age groups will be competing. The age groups are 5-7, 8-10, 11-13, and 14-adult.

“We tried to break it into groups that would be competitive against each other,” said Chris Weber cochairman of the event.

The winner of each age group will be given a prize.

Schedule 9 a.m.

5-7 year olds: $5 entry fee. How fast they can eat two frosted cake donuts.

Winner receives $25 8-10 year olds: $5 entry fee. How fast they can eat three frosted cake donuts.

Winner receives $25 11 a.m.

5-7 year olds: $5 entry fee. How fast they can eat two frosted cake donuts.

Free entertainment at AOP “John Travolta” and Michael Weisner, Second City trained actors/jugglers, are just two of performers that will provide free entertainment at this year’s festival.

Saturday’s entertainment will be offered around the historic Ogle County Courthouse.

Shows are also staggered

on their start times and located in two different areas to give visitors a chance to see more than one show as they shop in the Farmers’ Market and Craft show.

Ready to run? AOP 5K, Fun Run are Sunday, Oct. 4 The 10th annual Autumn on Parade 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run will be Sunday, Oct. 4.

“Spread the word and come join us for another spectacular run and then stick around town for the other activities offered by the Autumn on Parade Festival and Parade,” said race organizer Sacha Pruett.

One-mile runners will begin the day at 8 a.m. followed by the 5K participants at approximately 8:30 a.m.

The 1 Mile Fun Run course will be the same as last year and walkers/runners will receive a commemorative 10th anniversary participation ribbon.

Registration for 1 Mile Fun Run is $10.

T-shirts available to those pre-registered (shirts/sizes will be first come first served).

“As for the 5K, all the same amenities that race goers have come to love will be available again such as music, premium long sleeve tech shirts, post race food, shower facilities, awards to first, second, and third in 16 different age groups, overall awards, chip timing by Real Timing, Inc., photography by Chelsea Marie Photography, and post race massages provided by Alpine Chiropractic and Natural Medicine, PC,” Pruett said.

“The 5K course is the same as last year and a print out of the course can be found at www. autumnonparade.org under the 5K page.”

Strollers will be allowed on the race course but must start after all runners. No pets, bicycles, or scooters allowed on the course.

The Autumn on Parade 5K and Fun Run will be held on Sunday, Oct. 4.

Park West (off 10th Street and Jefferson Street). The only entry and exit for parking is off of 10th Street behind the high school for the safety of the walkers/runners.

Back again this year is the 5K Corporate Team Challenge so grab some co-workers, friends, or family and sign up. Teams can be a minimum of 4/maximum of 15 per team.

The top four race times for each team are added together and the fastest team wins.

Participants may use one of three

registration options to sign up for the event: online, mail in form, or race day.

Pre-registration by mail will be offered for forms received by Sept. 24 for a fee of $20 for 5K individual and $18/registrant for 5K Corporate Challenge.

Mail-in forms can be printed from our website listed above.

“You may also register online at GetEvent. com (direct link found on our website) by Sept. 29,” Pruett said. “Teams may also

register online by setting up their team name and password online for all members to register.”

Mail in forms received after Sept. 24 through race day registration (6:45-7:45 a.m.) will have a fee increase to $25 for 5K individual and $25/registrant for 5K Corporate Challenge.

There will be an availability to register at the early packet pickup planned for Friday, Oct. 2 from 2-6 at the Oregon Coliseum and on race day.

No late registrations will be taken after 7:45 am on race day.

Premium long sleeve t-shirts are guaranteed only to the first 300 pre-registered participants. It will then be on a first come, first serve basis for shirts/sizes.

For pre-registered participants, packet pickup will be available on two separate days. Friday, Oct. 2 from 2 - 6 p.m. at the Oregon Coliseum (no Saturday pick up) and on race day from 6:30 - 7:45 a.m.

Journey back in time, tour a castle at the Olde English Faire Take a journey back in time and tour The Stronghold Castle at the Olde English Faire, held in conjunction with the Autumn on Parade on Saturday, Oct. 3 and Sunday, Oct. 4.

Wandering players will perform both onstage and off as crafters and merchants display their wares.

Minstrels will fill the pathways and stages with melodies while children gather in the Gremlin’s Garden for stories and other

children’s activities.

These and many more delights await you at the Olde English Faire!

Gates shall open at 9 a.m. and close at 4 p.m. The Faire shall conclude at 5:30 p.m.

This family-friendly renaissance faire will soon not be forgot!

Admission prices for a one-day ticket are: adults, $10 and children ages, 7-12 years, $5.

There is no charge for children age 6 and under.

Add on a tour of Stronghold Castle for $2.

All proceeds will go towards renovating the castle!

Tours of the Castle will give visitors a chance to explore the Great Hall, the circular Library and to discover the secret passageway.

Stronghold is the camping and retreat ministry of Blackhawk Presbytery, Presbyterian Church (USA).

Adopt a duck, maybe win cash The bright orange ducks with the white sailor hats are once again getting ready to race in the 2015 Autumn on Parade Duck Dash.

The plastic quackers will “paddle” down Franklin Street in Oregon at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4, after the Harvest Time Parade.

“They will swim down our man-made river provided by the Oregon Fire Department on Sunday, following the conclusion of the Harvest Time Parade,” said Duck Dash Chairman Jessie Whalen.

The duck dash route is on Franklin Street between Third and Second Streets,

along the south side of Conover Square.

Ducks, each carrying their own number, will be available for purchase at the Autumn on Parade Information Tent during the festival.

The adoption fee is $5 each or a ‘6 Quack’ for $25, where six ducks can be purchased for the price of five.

Each duck has a number ascribed to his/her bottom.

Adoptive parents fill out an adoption form designating that duck based on his/her number.

The duck is then placed in the Duck Dash race line-up.

The first 10 chosen ducks that make it down Franklin

Street the day of the race are the winners.

All ducks remain the property of the festival.

Adoptive parents of the top 10 chosen ducks will be awarded cash prizes.

Vintage Base Ball game is Oct. 3 Visitors to the 2015 Autumn on Parade festival will have a chance to watch a genuine Vintage Base Ball game. That’s right Base Ball — the way it was originally played 157 years ago!

Oregon’s own Ganymedes will play the DuPage County Plowboys on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. along Sixth Street between Washington and Jefferson streets in downtown Oregon.

This is not the traditional game of baseball as you now

know it.

This game will be played using the original rules of Base Ball from 1858 which includes playing with no mitts, wooden bats, no walks, and a collection of other rules not found in modern-day baseball.

Early base ball fields did not have outfield fences and were not perfectly flat with skinned infields like today.

The ground was often sloped or bumpy and a tree or building located in the middle

of the playing area often gave the home team a real home field advantage until the visiting squad figured out how to play around it.

The Oregon Ganymedes was formed as an educational outreach program for the Chana School Museum and play an average of 15 to 20 games each season at festivals, museums and historic small towns against other vintage teams from Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Missouri.

Special postal stamp is available at post office on Saturday, Oct. 3 The United States Postal Service, Oregon Station, will offer a commemorative pictorial stamp cancellation as part of the 45th Autumn on Parade Festival.

The commemorative cancellation can be placed on any item by purchasing a 49¢ stamp and adhering it to the item.

Envelopes, schedules of events, festival programs or other similar items may also be stamped.

This special cancellation will be offered at the Oregon Post Office, located at the corner of Fifth and

Washington Streets, from 9 a.m. to noon. on Saturday, Oct. 3.

Collectors from all over the country take advantage of this opportunity. The commemorative cancellation is promoted through the U. S. Postal Service publication for collectors.

And customers can also purchase commemorative Elvis stamps and CDs which fits with the 2015 Autumn on Parade theme of “Flashback to the 1970s”.

CDs cost $9.99 and include popular Elvis Presley songs.

Plenty of farming iron at AOP classic tractor show Whether you like John Deere green or Farmall red the 23nd annual Autumn on Parade Antique Tractor Classic and Gas Engine Exhibit should be just what the tractor doctor ordered.

This year’s show will be held at Oregon Park East on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Show chairman Stan Eden said past shows have featured more than 50 outstanding exhibits representing Oliver, Farmall IH, Minneapolis Moline, Allis Chalmers, J.I. Case, Fordson and John

Deere.

“Max Armstrong’s Farmall tractors will be on exhibit at the show on Saturday and he will drive in the parade on Sunday,” Eden said. “We will also have a gasoline engine exhibit on Saturday.”

The tractor classic showcases the area’s farming industry and offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy the farming heritage of the community.

Visitors will see restored and sometimes, unrestored farm tractors as well as gas

engine exhibits. Owners are invited to register by 9 a.m. on Saturday morning.

Exhibits of lawn and garden tractors are also welcome.

Steel wheeled tractors will not require the use of planks.

Antique farm tractors and newer ones of all makes and models are invited to participate. All exhibits must be in running condition.

Great food, prepared

by The Chana School Foundation, will be available at the site.

See cool cars on Saturday, Oct. 3 The Focus House Foundation is in the driver’s seat at this year’s 26th annual car show, slated for Saturday, Oct. 3 at Oregon Park East.

“We’re delighted to have Focus House coordinate the car show,” said Marseyne Snow, AOP president. “We are really looking forward to working with them.”

This year’s show will again be held on Saturday at Oregon Park East, just across River Road, east of Oregon.

Registration will start at 8 a.m. and the show runs until

approximately 4 p.m.

Six special trophies will be provided for: Best of Show, Best GM, Best Ford, Best Orphan, Best Mopar, and Kid’s Choice Pre-registration is $10 before Sept. 26 and $15 the day of the show.

Entertainment will be provided by 3-D Sound.

Lunch will be available on site near the historic Chana School.

Profits from the show will benefit Foundation for Focus House.

Focus House, established in 1975, is an Ogle County owned youth residential facility operated by the Ogle County Probation Department.

The primary goal of Focus House is to return each child to his/her family, avoiding further - and more severe court mandated actions.

Reading, writing, and arithmetic are just three staples awaiting Autumn on Parade visitors at the historic Chana School, located on River Road in Oregon Park East.

This unique two-room school, built in 1883, is celebrating its 132nd birthday this year!

It will be open for tours on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. during Autumn on Parade.

Costumed docents will greet visitors inside the school and the Chana School

Foundation will also be selling barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs, beverages, and desserts.

The school originally stood in the town of Chana seven miles from Oregon and was set to be torn down in 1998.

But a group of local citizens formed the Chana School Foundation to move the building to a new location, restore it to its original appearance, and operate it as a living history museum.

In December 2005, the school was placed on the

National Register of Historic Places.

This unique V-shaped building is not your typical rural schoolhouse.

Inside visitors will find cloak rooms with curved walls, decorative pressed tin walls and ceilings and fancy carved woodwork painted in Victorian colors.

More than 300 children will come to the schoolhouse this fall for a day in education from 1893.

The Tractor Drive through Oregon will begin at approximately 4 p.m. All exhibitors will receive a commemorative “dash plaque”. All exhibits must be in running condition.

Entries will be accepted at Oregon Park East until 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3. Preregistration is welcome but not required. Participants are invited to enter the parade on Sunday but that entry must be completed on a separate form.

Agriculture and agricultural related industries are a leading force in the economy of Ogle County and northwestern Illinois.

“Ogle County is one of the state’s leading producers of agricultural crops and livestock,” said Eden.

“Come to the 2015 tractor show and learn more about

our agricultural heritage.”

The show will be held at Oregon Park East in

conjunction with the annual Autumn on Parade Auto Classic.
