Fair designed to be family-friendly The 162nd Ogle County Fair will continue its tradition of family-oriented activities and prices.

The fair will be held Wednesday, July 29 through Sunday, Aug. 2 at the fairgrounds on Limekiln Road, just north of Ill. 64 a mile west of Oregon.

Large signs on Ill. 64 will point the way.

Advance tickets will once again offer discounted prices for both general admission and grand stand events.

“I would really encourage everyone to take advantage of the advance sales,” said fair board president Harlan Holm. “We do it so that families can afford to go to the fair.”

Tickets can be purchased in advance at a cost of $5 per

person for general admission, a $3 discount from the gate price. The general admission ticket includes unlimited carnival rides.

Tickets for grand stand events are $8 in advance, a $2 discount off the regular price.

Local businesses offering the advance tickets are Casey’s in Oregon, Polo, Byron, and Stillman Valley, and the Stillman Bank at its Stillman Valley, Oregon, Byron, and Rochelle locations.

Holm said the highlight of the fair is the projects done by 4-H Club members.

Projects entered in the fair are judged and awarded ribbons.

New to this year’s fair are the Rhinestone Roper and the High Flying Pages, both entertainment included with general admission tickets.

The Rhinestone Roper does tricks with a lariat and more, Holm said, involving youngsters from the audience in his act.

The Pages offer an aerial and equestrian show, with stunts

on the trapeze, trick riding, and ballet on horseback.

Other free shows included the Brian Holt Magic Show from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 31 and 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1 and various musical groups.

The 2015 Ogle County Fair Queen Pageant will be crowned on opening night Wednesday, July 29.

Holm is hoping for a break in the so far rainy summer when fair time rolls around.

“I’m hoping for no rain from July 28 to Aug. 3,” joked Harlan Holm, fair board president.

Although the fair runs from July 29-Aug. 2, Holm is hoping to gain an extra sunny day on either end for set-up and teardown and so the grounds will be in prime condition.

He praised the efforts of the volunteers who have been scrambling to keep up with the mowing and grounds work this summer.

“I’m thankful for everyone who has helped out,” he said.

Melodies will fill the air at the fair A variety of melodies fill the air during any county fair.

They may range from the sounds of engines revving at a demolition derby, to sheep baaing, horses neighing, pigs oinking, kids screaming, and musical melodies.

The musical melodies will be on display for three nights at the county fair.

First Fridays, Oregon’s popular open stage music show, will again take place at the Ogle County Fair this summer. Music will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 31 and continue until all performers in attendance have had their turn at center stage. Musicians may sign up beginning at 6 p.m.

Goin Postal plays Thursday, July 30 First Friday is Friday, July 31 Jim Wolber & the Lariet Band play Saturday, Aug. 1 along with the First Fridays regulars.

Musicians from across Northern Illinois, and often neighboring states, appear on a regular basis.

The music is varied and includes country, bluegrass, blues, gospel, folk, soft rock, and eclectic mixes of all of the above.

The instruments are all acoustic with professional audio services provided by 3-D Sound Company.

Audience members are encouraged to bring musical instruments and participate.

First Fridays is a part of Northern Illinois’ Friday night music scene along with Second Fridays in Lanark, Third Fridays in Franklin Grove, Fourth Fridays in Polo, and when they occur, special Fifth Friday shows in Franklin Grove.

In September, First Fridays will return to the Oregon VFW Club.

The Ogle County Fairgrounds is located west of Oregon just off Ill. 64 on Limekiln Road.

In addition to these performances on Friday night, there will be two additional musical performances during the fair.

The Goin Postal band will take the stage on Thursday, July 30. They will perform from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m.

The band performs a variety of classic rock, country, and blues.

Jim Wolber & the Lariet Band take the stage Saturday, Aug. 1 with a performance beginning at 7 p.m.

Free activities at the county fair Once visitors step onto the grounds of the fair, a variety of free activities will fill the day into the night.

With paid admission the carnival rides are free.

The carnival will be open Wednesday, July 29 from 6-10 p.m., Thursday, July 30 from 5 -10 p.m., Friday, July 31 from 3-10 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 1 from noon-10 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

The Ogle County Fair Queen pageant will be held on Wednesday, July 29 at 5:30 p.m. Also selected at this time will be the Little Miss and Little Mister.

An antique tracter parade is at 5 p.m. July 29 followed by an antique tractor pull at 6 p.m.

Throughout the festival there will be shows by the High Flying Pages Aerial 7 Equestian Show, Brian Holt Magic Show, Rhinestone Roper and a kids pedal pull.

Chain saw art will be created throughout the fair and visitors can stop by to watch the art being created.

Live music returns to the fair Thursday, July 30 with Goin Postal. The music continues on Friday, July 31 with First Friday. Jim Wolber & the Lariet Band performs Saturday, Aug. 1.

Times of all these free events will be posted at the fair.

Ornament sales will support the queen pageant Local supporters and friends of the Ogle County Fair will have a new and special opportunity to purchase a Limited Edition Collector’s Series Ornament to help support the queen pageant.

In the past the Ogle County Fair has offered a collector series basket. Unfortunately, the basket vendor is no longer providing that service.

“We are very excited, however to introduce a new and affordable way to support the Ogle County Fair Queen Pageant,” said queen pageant committee member Deana Simpson. “We have sought out a hand crafted ornament vendor to not only feature the queen pageant, but also the Ogle County Fair as well.”

Ticket Information

Admission to the county fair requires a ticket to access the grounds.

Daily passes to the fair are $8 and include wristbands for the carnival.

Children three and under are free, but a wristband is required for the carnival rides.

Wristbands are available for $3 at the fair office.

Exhibitor passes for the fair do not include wristbands and cost $15.

A season pass with wristband is available for $25.

A full VIP pass with wristband is $50.

The daily wristbands for the VIP and season passes are available at the fair office.

Exhibits will be displayed by local 4-H members Approximately 900 4-H project exhibits and 300 project animals will be showcased by Ogle County’s 400 community club 4-H members during the 2015 Ogle County Fair, Oregon, July 29 - Aug. 2.

4-H Fairs are held nationally to allow youth the opportunity to exhibit projects that have resulted from in-depth yearlong studies of areas that interest them.

As part of the exhibition, non-animal exhibitors meet one-on-one with project judges to receive feedback about their displays and gather ideas for future project expansion.

Animal judging tests 4-Hers abilities to produce, maintain, and select healthy animals with excellent breeding and market potential.

the opportunities to develop and refine their animal presentation skills.

At the 4-H Fair, competition exists at two levels. 4-Hers first compete against themselves for exhibit ratings.

Every exhibit, animal or nonanimal, is assigned a rating of blue, red, or white.

Blue ratings are awarded to youth with entries that meet class guidelines and represent high quality work.

White ratings are assigned when entries do not meet class guidelines or exhibits are of low quality.

Red ribbons are assigned for exhibits falling somewhere in between.

Once ratings have been assigned, all of the blue award winners compete against one another for the chance to become class champions or overall

division winners.

A number of blue awarded non-animal exhibits are also selected each year to represent Ogle County 4-H at the Illinois State Fair.

Beyond the competition and learning, the Ogle

County 4-H Fair is a celebration.

It marks the end of a year of youth development, club and county activities and community service, new friendships, and family building.

Many thanks go to the hundreds of 4-H leaders, helpers, chaperons, fair committee members, judges, auctioneers, and supporters who make this annual educational extravaganza possible.

Livestock auction Saturday, Aug. 1 The Blue Ribbon Livestock Auction has been set for Saturday, Aug. 1. It will be held in conjunction with the Ogle County Fair at the fairgrounds in Oregon.

The 4-H Auction Committee invites the public to support 4-H project work by bidding on a quality 4-H animal.

The auction will start at 3 p.m. in the Swine Barn. It will feature 4-H market hogs, lambs, beef animals, goats, poultry, and rabbits as well as the champion and reserve champion beef, swine and lamb carcasses.

Goats You will need to bring hay, water, feed bowls, grain, rake, shovel or pitchfork, and a wheelbarrow.

Keep the barn clean and aisles raked. Goats should have clean water and hay in pens at all times.

White dress attire is required when showing.

You are asked to wear plain white shirts. You may wear dark shoes, but not hats or sandals.

Goat exhibitors need only to wear a white shirt. When judging begins a class will be announced and the animals will enter the ring in a line.

The judge will then give directions. After placements are made, exhibitors are to remain in the ring until released.

Exhibitors may leave at check-out times only.

Exhibitors are responsible for cleaning their pens.

Dairy Animal 4-Hers showing dairy animals will need a gate to put on both sides of their animals. On show day, plan to wear a white shirt and white pants with leather

closed-toe shoes.

While in the ring, be sure you watch the judge at all times. It is important to know the parts of the animals as well as your animal’s date of birth.

Beef Animal Cattle will be weighed as you arrive at the fairgrounds.

Have a parent or adult help

Have health papers (required for all breeding animals and out-of-state steers) and registration papers with you at the scale.

You will need to bring straw and neckties (double ties for safety), and panels if your club doesn’t provide them.

When showing your animal, dress neatly and wear closed-toe shoes or boots. You should not wear tennis shoes or shorts.

You will need a leather show halter and you may want a show stick if you are comfortable using one.

You will bring your animal into the ring according to classes. There will be a ring man to help.

Before leaving you should rake bedding away from the wire panels. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask a committee member.

The conference judging method will be used. 4-Hers’ presence during judging is optional, but recommended.

If the 4-Her is unable to be present, he or she should attach a completed “4-H Exhibit Summary” available in the Extension office and off the Internet at web. extension.illinois.edu/bdo.

Judges may give oral and/or written comments to 4-Hers.

Parents may not accompany 4-Hers into judging area.

Written comments can be provided to 4-Hers unable to

be present during judging.

Please indicate at checkin that 4-Her will not be at judging.

Awards and trophies will be given at the judge’s discretion.

Should a 4-Her be awarded a rosette or trophy, he or she must leave it in place until check-out.

Judging sheets may be picked up beginning on Thursday of fair week at the Information Table during regular Exhibit Building hours.

Be prepared to answer questions the judge may ask you about your animal’s birth dates and care.

Feel free to ask the committee members questions at any time.

Swine Upon arrival you will weigh-in your pigs and take them to their pens. Health papers and blood test papers should be turned in at weigh in.

You will need to bring a shovel or pitchfork, and water bowls. Pens must stay clean all fair long.

During the show you should wear long pants (jeans) and hard shoes.

Sandals should not be worn.

Remember to smile and have fun!

Horse 4-Hers should report to the announcer’s stand to checkin. Any cancellations may be made at this time.

Proper show attire includes: hat/helmet, a collared shirt, appropriate pants/boots. No chaps.

Please review your fair book and call committee members with any questions Horses will be allowed to leave at lunch and at the break prior to speed classes after being excused by the superintendent.

Big Hat Rodeo returns July 31 Bucking broncos, roping skills, and bull riding will all be a part of the exciting Big Hat Rodeo on Friday, July 31 at the Ogle County Fair.

Tickets to watch the show at the grandstand are $10 in addition to fair admission.

Arrive at the fair early to ensure the best seats and take in the rest of the fair.

Cheer on many local competitors as they try to earn the best score in the ring.

Prize money is at stake for these performers.

Do you want to show off your riding skills? Sign up to compete in the rodeo.

The rodeo is sanctioned by the International Professional Rodeo Association (IPRA) and Colorado State Rodeo Association (CSRA) and will use IPRA rules for judging and care of the animals.

Plenty of tractors to be part of fair Antique tractor pull is July 29 The Antique Tractor and Implement Show will be the opening event at the 2015 Ogle County Fair.

The show will start with the flag raising ceremony and a Tractor Drive at 5 p.m. on Wednesday July 29.

For the third year the River Bend Antique Tractor Pull will take place at 6 p.m. in front of the grandstand and no fee will be charged.

Tractors that are in the pull are 1958 or older stock tractors.

Nine weight classes will be featured, from 3,750 pounds to 7,500 pound tractors.

on the Ogle County Fair Web site or from the office at the Fairgrounds Visit www.oglecountyfair.com or call 815-732-6962.

The tractor display will be on the grounds from Wednesday, July 29 through Sunday, Aug. 2.

Exhibitors and tractors and implements are asked to register and be in place by 4 p.m. July 29.

Special award plaques will be presented to the winners of the various competitive events.

Each participant in the show who brings a tractor or implement to display will receive a dash plaque in recognition of their participation.
