I can handle ‘creepy clown’ situation

If you have a child in school, I hope there’s been some talk at your house about clowns, because there definitely has been at their school.

The “creepy clown” phenomenon has swept the country since some children in Greenville County, South Carolina, said they saw “creepy clowns” trying to lure people into the woods in August. Most adults would say it’s ridiculous – I’m one of them.

But then, most adults don’t live in a world where magic or the supernatural seem all that possible. Our children do. They haven’t nearly enough experience to be as cynical about the world as most grown-ups. (More often than not, that’s endearing.)

To them, it’s entirely possible that there are clowns hiding in the cornfield across the street from their school. Clowns totally could have abducted two kids from a faraway place called Elgin. (These were actual rumors circulating among children at my daughter’s school last week. They are not true.)

Social media isn’t the reason for these kind of stories – they’ve always existed – but it sure makes them spread easier. Take the hundreds of videos posted on social media by teens who have “sighted” these clowns out and about.

The clips almost always start with people taking video of a scene that’s not at all noteworthy – just driving down the road or walking down the street at night. Then someone in a clown outfit will appear (unless it’s dark, then you don’t actually see them). Then some combination of things happens: • The teens cuss (this pretty much always happens) and then ask some pointless question such as, “What are you doing?”

• A boy will get out of the car; sometimes they attack the clown, seemingly without provocation – they are macho.

• The clown stands there for a few seconds, then charges straight at the camera. Sometimes it has “a knife.”

• The teens run or drive away – the really ar-

I find some of these amusing in a so-bad-it’sfunny kind of way.

But then, to me, the people making these videos are just kids. To my younger children, those teenagers are the big kids who can do adult stuff such as drive, go to dances and stay out late at night. They look up to them.

If teenagers are scared of clowns, then younger children figure clowns must be really scary.

Yes, it’s odd to see school districts in the Rockford area go on lockdown, or authorities reassure parents that there’s no danger of a clown attack in DeKalb, or that “El Payaso Loco Jr.” isn’t going to be rampaging through Carpentersville.

I haven’t received an official release from Sycamore police yet, but I’m pretty sure there’s not going to be a hippopotamus stampede.

Still, as tempting as it is to make light of the situation – or to recall the ridiculous 1988 film “Killer Klowns from Outer Space,” – it’s important to remember that for some of the children these schools serve, this whole clown thing is a real concern, or at least something that seems possible.

If I had to pick something for children to be worried about, I guess on balance it’s better they be afraid of “creepy clowns.”

I can tell them with almost absolute certainty that I can protect them from those.

Trump, Clinton endure back-and-forth battle during 2nd debate

ST. LOUIS – In a bitter debate filled with fire and insult, Hillary Clinton declared that Donald Trump’s vulgar comments about women reveal “exactly who he is” and prove his unsuitability to be president. Firing back, he accused her of attacking women involved in Bill Clinton’s extramarital affairs and promised she would “be in jail” if he were president.

Trump, who entered Sunday night’s debate desperate to steady his floundering campaign, unleashed a barrage of attacks and continually interrupted Clinton.

He repeatedly called her a “liar,” labeled her the “devil” and contended she had “tremendous hate in her heart.”

On one substantive matter, he acknowledged for the first time that he had paid no federal income taxes for many years.

The debate was the culmination of a stunning stretch in the race for the White House, which began with the release of a new video in which Trump is heard bragging about how his fame allowed him to “do anything” to women. Many Republicans rushed to revoke their support, with some calling for him to drop out of the race.

Answering for his words for the first time, Trump denied that he had ever kissed and grabbed women without their consent. He said repeatedly that his words in 2005 were merely “locker room talk” and paled in comparison to what he called Bill Clinton’s abuse of women.

“She should be ashamed of herself,” Trump declared. Ahead of the debate, the businessman met with three women who accused the former president of sexual harassment and even rape, then invited them to sit in the debate hall.

Bill Clinton never faced any criminal charges in relation to the allegations, and a lawsuit over an alleged rape was dismissed. He did settle a lawsuit with one of the women who claimed harassment.

The second debate was a town hall format, with several undecided voters sitting on stage with the candidates. The voters, all from the St. Louis area, were selected by Gallup.

The tension between Trump and Clinton was palpable from the start of their 90-minute debate, the second time they have faced off in the presidential campaign. They did not shake hands as they met at center stage.

Trump, who is several inches taller than Clinton, stood close behind her as she answered questions from the voters. At other times, he paced the stage, repeatedly interrupting her and criticizing the moderators.

Travel website names city among underrated Midwest towns to visit

bkeeperman@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – The city has been named one of the underrated towns in the Midwest to visit this season by travel website Fodors Travel, coinciding with a recent separate win for the Woodstock Farmer’s Market.

In Fodor’s top 25 “Underrated Midwestern Towns to Visit this Fall,” Woodstock falls at No. 23, touted for its Tuesday and Saturday farmers market, craft beer at the Public House and independent bookstore, Read Between the Lynes.

Other cities on the list included Galena, Illinois; Port Washington, Wisconsin; and Traverse City, Michigan, among other cities in Indiana, Ohio, Minnesota and Iowa.

“As it relates to being on any list, I am glad we get the exposure,” said Mike Turner, Woodstock City Council member and Promote Woodstock member. “Generally, any positive exposure is good for the city.

We are trying to be more proactive about that with the Real Woodstock campaign, and I think it’s been successful.”

The farmers market itself won American Farmland Trust’s 2016 “Best in Class” award and landed in the top 50 markets in the nation and No. 4 in Illinois in categories including Focus on Farmers, Healthy Food For All and Champion for the Environment.

The competition is consumer driven, and the market’s popularity is rising, said market manager Keith Johnson.

“I think we are becoming a bit of a destination,” he said. “We have more people coming from farther away, and we have always had great support from the com-

Proceeds from Lobster Fest to help feed the hungry

nlinhart@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – St. Ann’s 32nd annual Lobster Fest will take place Saturday, and a portion of the proceeds will go toward the Woodstock Area Community Ministry.

“It’s a fundraiser for the church and WACM,” event co-coordinator Vincent Castillo said. “So some of the money raised will be going to help feed the hun-

gry in the community.”

The fundraising event will be from 2 to 6:30 p.m. at St. Ann’s Episcopal Church, 503 W. Jackson St., Woodstock.

“Over the years, the contribution to WACM has been a humble act of faith embraced by the congregation at St. Ann’s,” senior warden Jeff Scott said. “It is an opportunity for our parish to share the gifts of our Lobster Fest fundraiser with those less fortunate.”

Stickney House anchored in history LOCAL HISTORY Kurt Begalka At this time of year, everybody looking to make a quick buck is offering “haunted” this or that, be it trails, mazes or, especially, houses. But when it comes to separating fact from fiction, only one place I know in the county comes with a pedigree.

George Stickney, a New York native and the first white settler in Nunda Township, was the first township supervisor, a road commissioner and director of Holcombville School – another endangered building also in Bull Valley. He married the daughter of another prominent pioneer, Sylvia (spelled Silvea in old records) Beckley, in 1839. The Stickneys received the title to the property in 1840 and built a cabin before constructing the 10-room house at 1904 Cherry Valley Road.

Its signature rounded corners mirror Sylvia’s interest in spiritualism and her penchant for hosting séances. Perhaps the loss of seven of 10 children fueled her interest in communicating with the dead and – legend has it – that was made easier without 90-degree angles. Corners supposedly not only trap ghosts – they can attract the wrong kind of spirits.

In a similar vein, the village of Bull Valley is concerned about attracting the wrong crowd to the building that now houses its village hall and police department.

“People want to stay overnight there, kind of like a bed and breakfast.

They want to film TV shows, and they are willing to pay,” Stickney House Foundation President Nicole Horn said. “But there are meetings there on weekends when some want to do tours of the haunted house, and that is not conducive to how village officials want to run their operations. I get it.

“But in West Dundee earlier this year, they filmed another movie. It would be great if we could do something like that. I think Emily Berendt, the village president, really gets it.

She is working hard to get the village offices transitioned into the barn.”

Upgrading the 1938 barn to accommodate village operations and an upstairs rental space will cost a projected $2 million, Horn said. Toward that end, fundraising is continuing on the foundation’s Facebook page and via contributions to the Stickney House Foundation, sent to 1904 Cherry Valley Road, Bull Valley, IL 60098. A GoFundMe campaign also is in the offing.

But despite housing village offices and the police department, renovations to the 160-year-old structure come from private donations and not taxpayers.

Many of the repairs completed early on revolved around shoring things up – from pouring new foundation walls to repairing a leaky roof to tuckpointing to upgrading interior plumbing and electrical services. The basement’s dirt floor was replaced with cement, all 15 windows were replaced with similar or original materials and debris is being removed from the second floor.

“We’ve just been cleaning it out and doing some light demolition,” Horn said. “Some of the petition walls are not original, there is some structural stabilization [that is needed] and some of the plaster is down, anyway.

We need to blow in insulation and do lighting. Our biggest focus is in the ballroom to get it so it looks closer to the original.”

“She is able to relate to every student in some way, and she makes her music class fun and exciting, even for those students who don’t really have a love of music,” said Sandy Ozimek, principal at Algonquin Road Elementary School.

The Harmony World Music Ensemble is a way for students to sing, dance and play instruments, and the group is learning songs from Africa, England and a Navajo peace song, Loundy said.

All instruments students use are provided by the school, and the tubano drums are easy to use and make a good sound, she said.

“The idea is you get the kids’ hands on the drums, and they feel a real sense of accomplishment when they’re all part of the ensemble together,” Loundy said.

FOX RIVER GROVE – Through the Harmony World Music Ensemble at Algonquin Road Elementary School, music teacher Katrina Loundy gives her students the chance to learn about and experience different cultures and musical traditions.

Loundy started the after-school group this year, and now, about 45 third- and fourth-graders participate.

The students play mainly percussion instruments, and because of a $575 grant from the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, the school will be able to buy three tubano drums.

“It’s a chance for them to really understand through music how other cultures are around the world ... and basically to really show them that music is universal,” Loundy said of the ensemble. “No matter where you go, it’s understood by everyone, even if people speak different languages.”

The association awarded about $15,000 in grant money to public school educators in northern Illinois this year, according to its website.

Other McHenry County educators and schools that received grants include Nicole Gerlach and Kathy Canevello of Johnsburg Elementary School, Gina Nicholls of Edgebrook Elementary School in McHenry, Melinda Parrent of Northwood Middle School in Woodstock and Jaime Trischan of Alden-Hebron Elementary School, according to the IRTA’s website.

To the Electors of the State of Illinois: The Illinois Constitution establishes a structure for government and laws. There are three ways to initiate change to the Illinois Constitution: (1) a constitutional convention may propose changes to any part; (2) the General Assembly may propose changes to any part; or (3) a petition initiative may propose amendments limited to structural and procedural subjects contained in the Legislative Article. The people of Illinois must approve any changes to the Constitution before they become effective. The purpose of this document is to inform you of proposed changes to the Illinois Constitution and provide you with a brief explanation and a summary of the arguments in favor of and in opposition to the proposed amendment.

Proposed changes in the existing constitutional amendment are indicated by underscoring all new matter and by crossing with a line all matter which is to be deleted.

PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO ADD SECTION 11 TO ARTICLE IX OF THE ILLINOIS CONSTITUTION ARTICLE IX – REVENUE SECTION 11. TRANSPORTATION FUNDS (a) No moneys, including bond proceeds, derived from taxes, fees, excises, or license taxes relating to registration, title, or operation or use of vehicles, or related to the use of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, airports, or to fuels used for propelling vehicles, or derived from taxes, fees, excises, or license taxes relating to any other transportation infrastructure or transportation operation, shall be expended for purposes other than as provided in subsections (b) and (c). (b) Transportation funds may be expended for the following: the costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation, including statutory refunds and adjustments provided in those laws; payment of highway obligations; costs for construction, reconstruction, maintenance, repair, and betterment of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, airports, or other forms of transportation; and other statutory highway purposes. Transportation funds may also be expended for the State or local share of highway funds to match federal aid highway funds, and expenses of grade separation of highways and railroad crossings, including protection of at-grade highways and railroad crossings, and, with respect to local governments, other transportation purposes as authorized by law. (c) The costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation shall be limited to direct program expenses related to the following: the enforcement of traffic, railroad, and motor carrier laws; the safety of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, or airports; and the construction, reconstruction, improvement, repair, maintenance, operation, and administration of highways, under any related provisions of law or any purpose related or incident to, including grade separation of highways and railroad crossings. The limitations to the costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation under this subsection (c) shall also include direct program expenses related to workers’ compensation claims for death or injury of employees of the State’s transportation agency; the acquisition of land and the erection of buildings for highway purposes, including the acquisition of highway rights-of-way or for investigations to determine the reasonable anticipated future highway needs; and the making of surveys, plans, specifications, and estimates for the construction and maintenance of flight strips and highways. The expenses related to the construction and maintenance of flight strips and highways under this subsection (c) are for the purpose of providing access to military and naval reservations, defense-industries, defense-industry sites, and sources of raw materials, including the replacement of existing highways and highway connections shut off from general use at military and naval reservations, defense-industries, and defense-industry sites, or the purchase of rights-of-way. (d) None of the revenues described in subsection (a) of this Section shall, by transfer, offset, or otherwise, be diverted to any purpose other than those described in subsections (b) and (c) of this Section. (e) If the General Assembly appropriates funds for a mode of transportation not described in this Section, the General Assembly must provide for a dedicated source of funding. (f) Federal funds may be spent for any purposes authorized by federal law.

EXPLANATION The proposed amendment adds a new Section to the Revenue Article of the Illinois Constitution that provides revenue generated from transportation related taxes and fees (referred to as “transportation funds”) shall be used exclusively for transportation related purposes. Transportation related taxes and fees include motor fuel taxes, vehicle registration fees, and other taxes and user fees dedicated to public highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit (buses and rail), ports, or airports.

Under the proposed amendment, transportation funds may be used by the State or local governments only for the following purposes: (1) costs related to administering transportation and vehicle laws, including public safety purposes and the payment of obligations such as bonds; (2) the State or local share necessary to secure federal funds or for local government transportation purposes as authorized by law; (3) the construction, reconstruction, improvement, repair, maintenance, and operation of highways, mass transit, and railroad crossings; (4) expenses related to workers’ compensation claims for death or injury of transportation agency employees; and (5) to purchase land for building highways or buildings for to be used for highway purposes.

This new Section is a limitation on the power of the General Assembly or a unit of local government to use, divert, or transfer transportation funds for a purpose other than transportation. It does not, and is not intended to, impact or change the way in which the State and local governments use sales taxes, including the sales and excise tax on motor fuel, or alter home rule powers granted under this Constitution. It does not seek to change the way in which the State funds programs administered by the Illinois Secretary of State, Illinois Department of Transportation, and operations by the Illinois State Police directly dedicated to the safety of roads, or entities or programs funded by units of local government. Further, the Section does not impact the expenditure of federal funds, which may be spent for any purpose authorized by federal law.

hile there are plenty of great destinations in McHenry County during

the fall season, one that truly stands out is the Royal Oak Farm Orchard in Harvard.

The 160-acre property at 15908 Hebron Road is open until mid-November, offering attendees more than 30 varieties of apples from more than 16,000 apple trees.

One aspect that makes Royal Oak Farm Orchard so unique is its giant maze. Most mazes are pathways through cornstalks, but Royal Oak Farm’s maze, called Amaze ‘N Apples, leads people through a maze of apple trees.

The farm also offers so much more for its visitors. Attendees can pick out their own apples, pumpkins and squash to bring home for the fall season. While there are pre-picked pumpkins available for sale, people can also pick out their own from the orchard’s

pumpkin patch. For those who want an old-fashioned tour of the property, Royal Oak Farm holds hayrides Friday and Saturday nights.

As for food, Royal Oak Farm has plenty to offer. Hungry customers can stop by the orchard’s bakery for apple cider doughnuts, fresh fruit pies and other baked goods. Those with a sweet tooth can also visit Royal Oak’s Sweet Shop to pick up some delicious caramel apples or chocolate fudge.

Royal Oak Farm Orchard is open Mondays through Sundays until Oct. 31 with its hours of operation varying depending on the day. Starting on Nov. 1, the farm will only be open Mondays through Saturdays before it closes for the season starting Nov. 20.

bkeeperman@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County is hosting “Make a Difference Day” to rid two local prairies of invasive species.

The organization is seeking volunteers to help restoration efforts at O’Brien Road Prairie and Triangle Prairie from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday.

The restoration is part of a statewide initiative to provide a habitat for monarch butterflies and other pollinating insects.

The defenders have taken part in planting native plants throughout prairies in McHenry County, including these two in Woodstock.

with the defenders.

“In general, native plants have very deep roots, so it helps a lot with runoff,” she said. “Especially if it’s near a road. If there is nothing there, there is more erosion. When there is a native plant, the roots will filter out the runoff, which is important because it reduces pollution that may run into

creeks and rivers.”

The three main woody, invasive, non-native plants in the area are honeysuckle, buckthorn and multiflora rose, which can prevent the spread of native plants and tend to have a heavy canopy that prevents nesting, said Nancy Schietzelt, president of the defenders.

“If you let them go, they will literally take over,” she said. “Buckthorn in particular … prevents other plants from growing. … Taking them out allows for natives to spread throughout the area and have a much more welcoming environment to provide necessary homes and food for birds, insects and mammals.”

All ages are welcome, and supplies, including snacks and water, will be provided. Volunteers should wear work clothes and plan to meet at O’Brien Road Prairie at 2 p.m.

Trump’s campaign was already struggling before the new video was released, due in part to his uneven performance in the first presidential debate. Many Republicans saw Sunday’s showdown as his last best chance to salvage his campaign.

It was unclear whether Trump’s performance did anything to expand his support beyond his core backers.

The new revelations about Trump overshadowed potentially damaging revelations about Clinton’s paid speeches to Wall Street firms. Emails released by WikiLeaks last week showed Clinton told a group that it’s acceptable for a president to project differing positions in public and private.

Asked in the debate whether that’s “two-faced,” Clinton pointed to Abraham Lincoln, saying he did whatever he could to get the 13th Amendment

passed, allowing emancipation of the slaves, by lawmakers who did not support African-American equality.

Rolling his eyes, Trump said, “Now she’s blaming the late, great Abraham Lincoln.”

Clinton said she respected Trump’s children, calling them “incredibly able and devoted.”

Trump, as if pulling a line directly from the Clinton campaign, called his Democratic opponent a “fighter.”

“She doesn’t quit, she doesn’t give up,” he said. “I respect that.”

A lifetime resident of the McHenry area, Frank lived at his Orchard Heights residence for over twenty years. He was a brilliant machinist for forty years and worked as a cold-heading specialist during that time.

Known for his love of sports, Frank enjoyed sky diving, scuba diving, and fencing. He had been tested and accepted proudly membership in M.E.N.S.A. He was also music lover who could play guitar and was a huge fan of The Ventures.

Roger H. Pendroy, 71, of Woodstock passed away peacefully Friday evening, Oct. 7, 2016 in his home in the company of his family and friends.

He was born Dec. 26, 1944 in Aberdeen, SD the son of Harry and Helen (Nelson) Pendroy. Mr. Pendroy was the co-owner of Allstar Fasteners Inc. of Elk Grove Village where he was president of manufacturing and warehousing.

Roger loved hot rods and corvettes and especially his pride and joy a 56 Nomad. He enjoyed attending car shows and entertaining the boys in the garage. He had a wide range of friends and will be greatly missed by all. His family will long remember the saying of “Pendroy Perfect”.

Surviving are his wife, Jeannie Wymore whom he married June 4, 2015 in Laguna Hills, CA; two daughters, Terri Trevino, and Dawn (Don) Sukash; three grandchildren, Josh, Taylor, and Sydney; siblings, Sandra (Cliff) Reirich, Susan (Michael) Vickers, Tony (Dana) Pendroy, Wendy (Dick) Neitzel; several nieces and a nephew; step children, William Wymore, Robin (Andy) Evert, Jill (Tim) Wymore, and four step grandchildren, Willy, Bailey, Noah, and Emaline.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Constance Franz Roger’s wishes were to be cremated and all services are private.

Mary Lou Zierer, 85, of Harvard passed away peacefully Friday, Oct. 7, 2016 at St. Anthony Medical Center Rockford.

She was born on Dec. 25, 1930 in Ottawa, IL the daughter of the late Vernon and Gladys (nee Stoxen) Kays. On Dec. 1, 1951 in Marengo she married William Zierer. Mary Lou a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

Also served as a Republication precinct committeeman for 35 years and a McHenry county board member for 20 years. She was a leader in the development of Valley Hi Nursing home and securing the traffic light at Rt. 23 and Kishwaukee Valley Rd. 4H leader of the Four Leaf Clovers for 10 years, Supporter of Marengo High School, past grand marshal of Marengo Settler’s Days and a member of Zion Lutheran Church and Zion Lutheran Ladies Aid. Her husband, William survives her; children, Diane (Bob) Ross, David (Sue) Zierer, Gary (Mary) Zierer, Barbara (Steve) Koester, Robert Zierer, and Susie (Tim) Minakes. Grandchildren. Illinois worst in reclaiming jobless benefits

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois is billions in debt, has billions in overdue bills and can’t seem to remove itself from a budget morass, yet it’s the nation’s worst in reclaiming hundreds of millions of dollars in overpaid unemployment benefits, an Associated Press analysis of federal labor data found.

The abysmal performance – claiming only about $264 million of the $714 million in overpayments from 2012 to 2016 – is one reason the U.S. Labor Department said that it would step in to help Illinois meet standards for management, record-keeping and timeliness, according to an Aug. 31 letter obtained by the AP under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. Illinois’ 37 percent recovery rate is the worst among all U.S. states and territories, which average 66 percent, the AP found.

That unclaimed $452 million can’t be used to alleviate social services that have suffered because of the state’s 21-month budget crisis, because it’s earmarked for current legitimate jobless claims or be held in savings to dole out for unemployment in the future.

Chicago teachers, school officials look to avert strike

CHICAGO – Contract negotiations between Chicago teachers and officials in the nation’s third-largest school district took place throughout the weekend in hopes of reaching a deal to avert a strike.

The Chicago Teachers Union has said its members are prepared to stop instruction for about 400,000 students as early as Tuesday morning for its second major strike since 2012, when teachers were out for seven school days. This year’s freshman class, which has nearly 7,600 students, is the largest class in the school’s history and is among the five largest in the country, The News-Gazette reported.

The university also is close to its capacity for undergraduate residential enrollment.

URBANA – Enrollment totals for this fall show the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign is the seventh-largest public university campus in the country with 44,880 students.

Gov: Trains swiped each other, causing derailment The U.S. appointments also sent NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y. – A 12-car commuter train and a work train performing track maintenance were traveling the same direction when they “side-swiped” each other, causing the commuter train to derail and injuring 33 people, four seriously, state officials said Sunday.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, speaking at the site of the Saturday night accident, said initial reviews indicate the yellow maintenance train somehow entered the clearance space of the eastbound Long Island Rail Road train, causing it to derail and leaving “a splatter of yellow paint where the first collision occurred.”

“Both trains were running in the same direction – one was a work train, one was a revenue train and they side-swiped each other,” Cuomo said. “The question is why.”

Federal investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board were to determine what exactly caused the accident, Cuomo said.

BERLIN – German police searched nationwide Sunday for a 22-year-old Syrian man believed to have been preparing a bombing attack, who slipped through their fingers as they were closing in on him, and were questioning a second Syrian man on suspicion he was involved in the plot.

The man in custody was one of three apprehended in the eastern city of Chemnitz on Saturday. He was the renter of the apartment that police raided in their search for the main suspect, Jaber Albakr from the Damascus area of Syria, Saxony police spokesman Tom Bernhardt told The Associated Press. The other two men have been released.

He said the man in custody was Albakr’s “countryman,” but wouldn’t give other details.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – When Hurricane Matthew dumped torrential rains on North Carolina, thousands of people found themselves suddenly trapped in homes and cars. Rescuers in Coast Guard helicopters plucked some of them from rooftops and used military vehicles to reach others, including a woman who held on to a tree for three hours after her car was overrun by flood waters.

In another dramatic rescue, a woman with her small child perched on the roof of her car had to be helped to safety as the waters rose around them, underscoring how quickly Matthew wreaked havoc 100 miles or more inland after sparing much of the Southeastern coast the catastrophic damage once feared.

The storm killed more than 500 people in Haiti and at least 18 in the U.S. – nearly half of them in North Carolina. Most were swept away by flood waters. Gov. Pat McCrory said authorities were searching for five people and feared they may find more victims. The problems were far from over as all that rain – more than a foot in places – flows into rivers and downstream, likely causing days of major flooding in many of the same places devastated by a similar deluge from Hurricane Floyd in 1999.

“Hurricane Matthew is off the map. But it is still with us. And it is still deadly,” McCrory said.

Princeville, a town of 2,000 that disappeared in the waters of the Tar River during Floyd, was

evacuated Sunday as the river was expected to rise to 17 feet above flood stage by late Monday – a level not seen since Floyd. McCrory expected more evacuations as some rivers were predicted to crest next Friday.

David Bullock’s sister called him as he bought lottery tickets to tell him police were knocking on doors saying they had to go. He rebuilt his home after the 1999 flood.

“If I get flooded again, I can’t take it. I can’t go back and take the expense. If I get flooded again I’m going to say, ‘it’s yours, I’m gone,’ ” Bullock said.

More than a million people in South Carolina and North Carolina were without power, and at least four separate sections of Interstate 95 – the main artery linking the East Coast from Florida to Maine – were closed in North Carolina.

The ferocity of the rain caught people by surprise. Ezekiel Crowe, 10, escaped the floods in Fayetteville on Saturday with his parents and seven brothers and sisters when a police boat plucked them from an apartment as the waters rose. “I was scared. I was scared. And I thought, I thought the world was going to end.

But it didn’t,” he said.

In Wilson County, rescuers were called when a 63-year-old woman didn’t make it home from work. They heard her cries for help while riding on top of a Humvee, and when they couldn’t get her with a rope, a National Guard soldier swam to her, staying until a rescue boat arrived, Emergency Management Director Gordon Deno, said.

Gun or stun gun? Police responses raise questions

SAN DIEGO – When Alfred Olango pulled out an object from his right pocket last month and assumed a shooting stance in a strip mall parking lot in a San Diego suburb, one officer opened fire with his pistol. The other officer simultaneously stunned Olango using his Taser.

Civil rights advocates say the different response by officers facing the same suspect illustrates a breakdown in police training and communication and shows that some officers are too quick to turn to deadly force.

The Sept. 27 shooting death of the 38-year-old Ugandan refugee who turned out to be wielding an electronic cigarette device came 11 days after another unarmed black man, 40-year-old Terence Crutcher, died in Tulsa, Oklahoma, after being shot by two officers also simultaneously firing a gun and a Taser.

“I think when one police officer feels it is appropriate to use a less lethal weapon like a Taser, and the other officer feels like the person has to be killed – it suggests a real divergence in training,” said Ezekiel Edwards, director of the American Civil Liberty Union’s criminal law reform project.

He added: “I think it highlights that

Law enforcement experts, however, say it’s not that simple because different officers don’t necessarily have the same reactions for handling potential threats.

The decisions they make, the experts

say, can be influenced by factors ranging from what officers see of suspects based on where they are standing, the extent of their police experience and information received from police dispatchers.

Officers increasingly work alone in patrol cars without partners and the sharp electric sound made by the Taser when fired could prompt other officers with guns to pull the trigger in what is

known as a “sympathetic firing.”

And once an officer chooses to use a Taser instead of a gun, there often is no time to switch to a firearm if the dangerous situation escalates quickly, said Tim Dees, a retired police officer and police trainer who writes a column for the PoliceOne.com website.

“If there is a deadly threat to officers, you don’t want bring in something less lethal, because by the time you transition you could be dead,” Dees said.

Stun guns, like the ones made by Taser, have been credited with saving thousands of lives by giving officers a safer alternative to guns.

But they are not meant for situations officers perceive as life-threatening. The devices send dart-like electrodes into targets to cause “neuromuscular incapacitation.” They should be used in police situations where non-deadly force is appropriate, similar to how officers use pepper spray on crowds, said Steve Tuttle, a Taser spokesman.

People have died after being shot with Tasers, including a 66-year-old man in suburban Los Angeles last week. Officers could not drag him to safety to be treated by paramedics for 14 minutes because they were in a standoff with his brother, who was threatening police with a gun.

JOHANNESBURG – At first, the drone took some explaining. Anxious villagers buzzed with rumors of a new blood-sucking thing that would fly above their homes. Witchcraft, some said.

The truth was more practical: A United Nations project would explore whether a small unmanned aerial vehicle, or UAV, could deliver HIV test samples more efficiently than land transport in rural Malawi.

Once understanding dawned and work began, young students and their teachers would spill out of the nearby school, cheering, each time they heard the drone approaching. “It was very exciting,” UNICEF official Judith Sherman said.

As drones quickly pick up momentum around the world in everything from military strikes to pizza delivery, Africa, the continent with some of the most entrenched humanitarian crises, hopes the technology will bring progress.

This second-largest continent, with harsh landscapes of desert and rain forest and extremes of rainy seasons and drought, is burdened with what the World Bank has called “the worst infrastructure endowment of any devel-

Africa has certain benefits for such projects, said Sid Rupani, who from his South Africa office studies how drones could be used effectively in supply chains. His U.S.-based employer, Llamasoft, has run a virtual pilot for Zipline in Tanzania.

“It’s not crowded airspace. Not many urban areas to deal with,” Rupani said.

Already, drones are being used in parts of the continent as visual aids in mapping and anti-poaching.

Drones also face multiple challenges. Some models are limited in range or need frequent recharging. If they crash, retrieval in remote areas can be difficult.

Some governments are wary of the technology as a possible invasion of their sovereignty, or they have no regulations in place.

Unite to grow Illinois The call for a manufacturing revival being shouted throughout Illinois by an industry group leader should resonate with area residents. We know firsthand the terrible sting of a declining manufacturing base and have struggled with the consequences of losing jobs that pay a national average wage of nearly $26 an hour and boast the highest percentage of eligibility for health benefits.

As Greg Baise, CEO and president of the Illinois Manufacturers Association, reminded last week, 304,000 manufacturing jobs have disappeared or left Illinois since 2000. To put that in perspective, he said, that’s more than the population of any city in Illinois other than Chicago.

Those losses reverberate throughout the state.

According to the National Association of Manufacturers, for every $1 spent in manufacturing, another $1.81 is added to the local economy because manufacturing jobs create other jobs. When they’re gone, many other jobs go with them.

It’s true that a significant number of those lost manufacturing jobs have fallen victim to global competition, the recession and technology. But that doesn’t explain why still-vibrant manufacturers leave Illinois or why companies looking to expand are opting not to build here.

So why aren’t they? Where are those jobs going?

It’s simple, really. As we dither, smart states have been creating and nurturing environments that welcome industry. As a result, while Illinois has created a meager 4,600 jobs in recent years, our neighbors are hitting the jackpot: Michigan has added 171,300 jobs; Indiana, 83,700; Ohio, 75,900; and Wisconsin, 44,100, Mr. Baise said. So a reasonable Illinoisan would expect that the people we send to Springfield would set aside their differences and work together to come up with a plan to bring jobs to the state and grow our tax base.

Instead, they bicker over any idea offered, and even, we’re sad to say, sometimes over the existence or the urgency of the problem. Democrats, led by House Speaker Michael Madigan, wield Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s Turnaround Agenda like a weapon to win the war of Nov. 8. The governor offers to compromise, and even follows through on some points, then spoils it by continuing to needle and bait Democratic leaders.

Despite all that, there still is hope, however slim, of a “Grand Bargain” after the votes are counted on Nov. 8; maybe as soon as the lame-duck session.

That will only happen, however, if the two sides are willing to bury the hatchet somewhere other than in their opponent’s back.

The outing of the Neapolitan author The apparent unraveling of an enigma in the publishing world - the identity of the author behind the enormously successful Neapolitan quartet of novels, which have millions of readers in Europe and the United States – has unleashed a firestorm. Passionate fans of the novels, released in 40 countries since the first one, “My Brilliant Friend,” appeared in 2011, have condemned the journalist who unmasked the Italian translator Anita Raja as the quartet’s apparent creator, whose pen name is Elena Ferrante.

The venom of the attacks against Claudio Gatti, the Italian journalist who published the results of his investigation in the New York Review of Books and elsewhere, is unwarranted.

Critics have pounced on him for shattering Raja’s closely guarded privacy; for providing no sound rationale for undertaking his research; and for desecrating

a pact between the author and some readers, who preferred to savor the art without regard to the artist.

One can appreciate the passion of the quartet’s fans, who cherish the novels’ textured portrait of a complex friendship between two women, set against the unsparing history of postwar Italy. One can admire their protective instincts toward the author, who has said that shunning the literary limelight and its celebrity trappings is critical to the preservation of her “creative space.”

But Ferrante (or Raja) is not a sacred deity; she is a gifted writer.

As such, her identity is a legitimate subject of interest. Literary scholarship is rich with studies of Jane Austen, Leo Tolstoy, the Bronte sisters and others, including those who wished fervently to be left alone by devotees and the wide world, such as J.D. Salinger.

If the Neapolitan quartet is an

influential work on feminism, Italy or postwar history, and some readers and scholars want to delve into its origins, why should that be suppressed?

The author rejects the idea that knowing something of her life may enhance or elucidate her books; she’s entitled to that view and under no obligation to speak with critics. Yet why skewer those who disagree? Rather than condemn such curiosity, perhaps it should be recognized for what it is: imperfectly human.

Raja’s defenders wonder why the world, awash in information, saturated with social media, could not have carved out just this zone of exemption. They might equally be glad that in an era of Twitter and Snapchat, of crimped attention spans and a celebration of so much that is prosaic and profane, there remains a little bit of an obsession with literature.

Body, mind need exercise and stimulation

To the Editor: Where can you find an information center that also provides help from a real person? Go to the Crystal Lake Library. The materials (books, computers) and personnel in this public service center

are there to provide intellectual development for every age group.

Remember, if you read, you can never be bored.

Learning is a life-long activity and our Crystal Lake Library is an important destination for this activity of the mind. But we are hampered and cramped.

We don’t have space. Our old library with its deteriorating infrastructure has been expanded twice since 1965.

For a new building, it’s going to cost me $11 dollars more per month on my city tax bill. My monthly fee at the local gym is twice as much. I am always reminded, “a sound mind in a healthy body.” They both need exercise and stimulation.

When you vote, make the library your first priority.

To the Editor: I grew up in a small logging town in Oregon.

It was the 1950s. Our President was Dwight Eisenhower.

In the 1950s, we had our faults as a citizenry, but we were proud to be Americans. We respected our president. When he spoke, his words rang true. “To be true to one’s own freedom, in essence, is to honor and respect the freedom of others” We are now at a crossroad in America’s history.

Will we embolden our nation with leaders who have a progressive vision for us or will we choose leaders whose words divide and speak to our fears and prejudices.

We’ve come a long way since the 1950s. All Americans can vote now. We must never take that for granted.

Once again, we are called upon to decide the future of our democracy. Listen with your heart and vote with the wisdom passed on to us by the lessons of history.

Low sex drive can be improved Dear Dr. K: I’m a woman in my mid-50s.

Lately I haven’t been able to become sexually aroused. What could be wrong?

Dear Reader: Sex is complicated, but you probably already know that. Sexual desire surely resides in the head, but other parts of the body can affect desire as well. In particular, the genital organs communicate with the brain. Likewise, the brain communicates with the genital organs. Desire in the brain causes changes in the pelvic organs. Perceiving these changes can, in turn, enhance sexual desire.

There is a condition called sexual arousal disorder. Normally, a woman becomes aroused through thoughts and fantasies, touch, or a combination of these things. In response, blood flows to her pelvic area. This causes the genital tissues to swell and the vagina to moisten in readiness for sexual activity. With sexual arousal disorder, your mind desires sex, but your body does not follow suit.

Many things can cause or contribute to this disorder. Medical conditions such as hypothyroidism and diabetes can dampen sex drive. Medications, including antidepressants and anti-seizure drugs, can have sexual side effects. Emotional and psychological issues also can profoundly affect sexual desire – and performance.

Sexual arousal disorder in women often occurs after menopause, when estrogen levels drop. This can cause vaginal tissue to thin and secretions to decrease. Sex may become painful, resulting in less arousal. But even if sex is not painful, a woman may notice the absence of the pelvic changes that occur with increased blood flow and vaginal moistening.

That can put a further damper on desire.

What treatments are available to improve sexual desire and sexual function? For years, drug companies have been in search of a “female Viagra.” The idea is that increased

Another issue might be vaginal dryness.

For many women, over-the-counter lubricants and vaginal moisturizers are enough to relieve vaginal dryness. If these products don’t help, low-dose vaginal estrogen products are available by prescription. They come as creams, tablets or rings inserted into the vagina. These raise estrogen levels in the vagina, making vaginal tissue thicker and more elastic. Unlike higher-dose hormone replacement therapy, they do not significantly increase blood levels of estrogen.

The most widely studied treatment for boosting female sexual desire is testosterone.

Most studies have found a benefit. Even though testosterone is described as a “male” hormone, women also make testosterone – but in much lower amounts than men. It does stimulate desire in women as well as men, along with arousal and orgasm.

Another option, if your problem is not just physical, is sex therapy. A therapist can help you identify thoughts, feelings and behaviors that might be interfering with your sexual enjoyment. A therapist also will help you communicate your needs and enhance feelings of intimacy between you and your partner.

A loss of sexual desire and function after menopause is reasonably common. Fortunately, there are therapies that can help.

Dear Abby: I am DEAR ABBY a 911 dispatcher with some hints Jeanne for your readers Phillips in case they need emergency services and must call 911.

Please pay attention to where you are. The most important information we need is the address of the emergency. If you are on the highway, tell us the Interstate and closest mile marker, as well as your direction of travel.

Many people assume we can trace their number to their location. While that may be true for landline phones, it’s not for cellphones. Only the cellphone company can “ping” a phone.

I also would like to caution parents about letting their children play with a deactivated phone. If you want to let them play or practice, first REMOVE THE BATTERY. Many calls we receive come from kids playing on a deactivated phone, and we are unable to call those numbers back to verify whether there’s a legitimate emergency. These calls also tie up emergency lines for people who have a genuine emergency, making them wait longer for their call to be answered.

My last comment is this: If you dial 911 by accident, please tell the dispatcher it was an accident. We never get angry if someone inadvertently dials us. Our job is to make sure the public is OK. If it was accidental, say so.

Otherwise, we must call back to make sure there is not an emergency.

Those of us in this profession do this job not because we are getting rich, but because we want to help people. We are the most important link in getting people the help they need, but we cannot do it without knowing where the emergency is. Thanks for getting the word out. –

Fresh off their 29-23 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, the Bears have become a team that is flat-out impossible to figure out.

Am I surprised the Bears played their best offense of the season, showed their best pass rush of the season, continued to uncover young players that appear to have very bright futures and yet found a way to lose a game they absolutely should have won?

Actually, no, the game went pretty much the way I predicted.

The puzzle is do we celebrate this performance, laud the development of young talent or throw up our arms in frustration over a game that never should have gotten away?

For example, Brian Hoyer on Sunday became just the second quarterback in Bears history to throw for 300 yards in three straight games, and the other guy isn’t Jay Cutler, Erik Kramer, Jim McMahon or even Sid Luckman.

It was in fact Josh McCown.

Hoyer’s numbers against the Colts were flat out gaudy – 33 of 43 for 397 yards, 9.2 avg., 2 TDs, 0 INTs and a 120.0 passer rating.

The problem is that performance came against one of the poorest excuses we’ve ever seen for an NFL defense and Hoyer still found a way to lose.

He took great care of the football, but in that singular focus left a number of big plays on the field that might have turned the game, and on his last play of the game he misread the coverage and, rather than throw the ball to a wide open Alshon Jeffery in the end zone for the win, he chose to go behind a well-covered Cameron Meredith for the loss.

The Bears now have a quarterback controversy very much of head coach John Fox’s making over a guy who is just good enough to lose impressively with.

As to the aforementioned Cam Meredith, we have a young man who would be a great story, a long shot to ever play professional football who stepped into his first big chance in the NFL and played well enough to be thought of as a potential big-time

Meredith may be worth getting excited about, but it’s really hard to know because as impressive as his 9-130, 14.4, 1 TD outing was in Indianapolis, it came against such a bad team in a losing effort he helped create.

I thought the Bears had found a really good nickel in Bryce Callahan – another youngster who like Meredith is a 2015 undrafted rookie free agent – until I realized last week he is actually a really good starting corner, if he can ever stay on the field.

After an outstanding first half Sunday, Callahan finished the game injured on the sideline with a hamstring problem.

At no time has there ever been a chance Barth was likely to be more dependable than Robbie Gould inside the 45 or otherwise, which is why we are told he is a Bear.

Gould is the best ever in that regard. So why does Barth have his job?

In fairness, everybody, this is what rebuilding looks like and this is what we signed up for. That is not the problem.

The problem is on Sunday in Indy it became a lot less clear as to whether the Bears have control of the plan.

Passing offense: Brian Hoyer was efficient, completing 76.7 percent of his passes for 397 yards, the fifth-most in Bears history. He did not turn the ball over for the third game in a row, finishing with a 120 passer rating. The O-line helped, too, keeping Hoyer clean and holding the Colts without a sack.

Pass rush: Taking advantage of a bad Colts offensive line, the Bears racked up five sacks and seven QB hits of Andrew Luck, including a few key takedowns on third down. Willie Young had a career-high three sacks.

Early second-half ‘D’: Indianapolis scored on all four of their drives before halftime, but the Bears forced three three-and-outs in the Colts’ first four drives of the second half. The other drive stalled and resulted in a field goal before Luck led the game-winning touchdown drive.

Covering Hilton/Allen: When throwing to T.Y. Hilton and Dwayne Allen, Luck was 16 of 17 for 221 yards and two touchdowns. Often, the Colts’ two best pass catchers and Luck’s favorite targets were wide open in the middle of the Bears’ defense.

Discipline: Penalties were killer for the second week in a row, as the Bears were flagged 10 times for 80 yards, including three penalties on the first drive that helped keep them out of the end zone.

Scoring points: Despite 522 yards of offense, the Bears managed only 23 points. Connor Barth missed a field goal, the Bears were 1-for-3 scoring touchdowns in the red zone and 2-for-9 on third down.

Howard’s face mask: On a screen pass to Cameron Meredith that would have set the Bears up for first-and-goal at the Colts’ 1-yard line on the opening drive of the game, Jordan Howard was called for a face-mask penalty. The Bears settled for a field goal.

Meredith’s touchdown: Backed up because of an offensive holding penalty that nullified a Howard touchdown, Hoyer found Meredith in the back corner of the end zone for a 14-yard score, tying the game at 13-13 in the second quarter.

Hilton’s score: The game-winner capped an efficient six-play, 82-yard drive in the fourth quarter for the Colts. Luck hit Hilton on a post pattern for a 35-yard touchdown. Without a safety in center field, Jacoby Glenn appeared to give Hilton too much cushion on the route, leading to the easy pitch-and-catch.

What now?

Record: 1-4 What it means: The Bears weren’t able to stack wins and fall back into last place in the NFC North, four games behind the Vikings.

What’s next: A return home to face the 1-3 Jaguars, coming off a bye after their first win of the season over the Colts in London.

Best game for the pass rush despite loss

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com INDIANAPOLIS – The defense finally got the pass rush going, nearly matching its season-high in sacks with five, but it was an afternoon of near-misses and not enough in a 29-23 loss to the Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium, dropping the Bears to a 1-4 record.

“We’ve just got to go out there and execute. We had a couple mistakes and with a quarterback like Andrew [Luck], he’s going to find that every time,” said Jerrell Freeman, Luck’s former teammate.

Despite a spirited pass rush from the Bears, Luck completed 71.2 percent of his passes and didn’t turn it over while also converting three third-and-longs. He put the exclamation mark on the victory with his 35yard touchdown pass to T.Y. Hilton.

“We knew he was going to be able to extend plays, that’s what he does so well,” said Danny Trevathan, who returned from thumb surgery and had six tackles. “He’s kind of in that category with Aaron Rodgers with scrambling around, extending plays and using his legs to get that extended play and get that play when it’s needed.

We kind of experienced a lot of that.

We just have to have better edges and you’ve got to keep [Luck] contained.”

Willie Young led the pass rush with a career-high three sacks.

“Defensively up front, we all had our mind made up. It wasn’t any in-between thinking,” he said. “It was all about, we have to do whatever it takes to get after the quarterback. Get him off his spot, disrupt his timing and help out the young guys in the secondary as much we can. Obviously, Luck is a heck of a quarterback, not to be mistaken.”

Young and Trevathan both saw plenty of positives from a young ‘D’ that was without starters Eddie Goldman and Leonard Floyd.

“We’ve just got to come up with a ‘W’. We know how to win, that’s for sure right now,” Young said. “We’ve just got to come out with the ‘W’. Especially close games like that.”

“It wasn’t bad at all,” Trevathan said. “All of it wasn’t bad, all of it wasn’t good, but we’ve got to separate it and capitalize on our mistakes and get them corrected.”

Offense stalls late : The 522 yards the Bears gained on offense, the franchise’s most since 1989, weren’t enough, either, to get a win.

“It don’t matter if we don’t win the game,” said Alshon Jeffery, who had five catches for 77 yards on six targets. “I don’t give a damn what we did out there. If we don’t win the game, that [expletive] don’t matter.”

Brian Hoyer threw for 397 yards in another efficient and impressive outing, but it’s his last play that got the most attention Sunday afternoon. On fourth-and-8 from the Colts’ 28-yard line, Hoyer threw an incomplete pass to Cameron Meredith while Jeffery was single-covered down the left sideline.

“Really to be honest, on that last play, I thought there was no way they wouldn’t [double-team Jeffery], and so I saw the safety wide, and like I said, we’ll watch the film and see how they played it,” Hoyer said.

Jeffery, who put his hands up in frustration after the play – an incomplete pass over the middle intended for Meredith – said afterward, “One play doesn’t change the game.”

Little man, big impact: DundeeCrown running back Greg Wil liams (5-foot-6, 155 pounds) is third in area rushing at 865 yards. He ran for 100 yards and one touchdown in Saturday’s loss, despite suffering a sprained ankle early in the game.

“He plays his butt off,” Chargers coach Mike Steinhaus said. “We didn’t have any backup running back today. He got dinged up his first run and had a bad ankle the rest of the game, otherwise he might have sprung a couple of those (runs). He played hurt the whole game. We call him the Mighty Mouse for a reason.”

Steinhaus said running back Ricky Ibarra, who suffered a finger injury during the week, should be back next week.

Looking ahead: Boylan’s 20-14 loss to Rockford East on Friday leaves only two teams who likely will be in the northern half of Class 6A with unbeaten records – Prairie Ridge and Rolling Meadows.

That means that if Cary-Grove (6-1) wins out it could grab a No. 3 seed in the northern half of Class 6A. Which means a potential rematch of Prairie Ridge and C-G, who met in the season

opener, would not happen until the semifinals.

Jonesing at Huntley: Huntley coach Matt Zimolzak is thrilled at the production from defensive end Caleb Jones, who added a sack and a tacklefor-loss to his statistics in Friday’s 42-21 win over Crystal Lake Central.

“Caleb’s been playing out of his mind the last few weeks,” Zimolzak said. “He is an unbelievable athlete and no matter where I put him or how I play him he continues to play well.

He’s been on the bubble or been our defensive MVP every week. He’s just a phenomenal player for us this year.

I’m really excited about him.”

Taking ownership: Huntley’s defense struggled in a 33-7 loss to CaryGrove two weeks ago. Those struggles continued in the first half against West Aurora, when the Red Raiders gave up 21 points.

Zimolzak was proud of the way his defense came together in the second half.

Marian Central knows its margin of error has dissipated to zero.

If the Hurricanes want to make the Class 5A playoffs, they need to win their last two games against Niles Notre Dame (5-2) and Chicago St. Patrick (4-3), neither of which will be easy in the rugged East Suburban Catholic Conference.

All Marian, which fell to 3-4 Friday with a 45-38 double-overtime loss to Carmel, wants is a chance to get to the postseason.

“That’s a 7A playoff team,” Maloney said, referring to Carmel. “No offense to the other teams in the 5A northern half, but I’d take our chances. We’re in desperation mode. They fought hard and they believe in themselves.”

The Hurricanes came up short in an intense, dramatic battle with the Corsairs that could have gone either way.

“We’ll carry this into next week and get two Ws and move on to the playoffs,” quarterback Gavin Scott said.

Maloney could be right. If the Hurricanes just qualify, they could be a tough out in the Class 5A northern bracket. They will have played seven tough ESCC games and the northern part does not look particularly deep.

“Marist is a role model for us,” Maloney said. “They were 5-4 last year and made it to the 8A championship game. We are not done; our backs are against the wall.”

Welcome back: Marengo was one of the area’s feel-good stories last year when it went 12-1 and made the Class 4A playoffs for the first time since 2004. McHenry takes on that role this season after reaching five wins with a 27-16 victory over Dundee-Crown Saturday.

The Warriors (5-2) will likely be back in the postseason for the first time since 2007.

“We’re super-proud for this school, for this community that we’re in a position to do something we haven’t done in almost 10 years,” first-year Warriors coach Nat Zunkel said. “It was one of our goals in preseason, right? We were not going to win the conference, but we can still fight like (heck) and get in the playoffs and get a respectable seed.”

Help on the way: McHenry was without tackle Andrew Rupcich on Saturday as Rupcich mends from a left knee injury. He said he would return for the regular-season finale at Huntley.

Shutout streak ends: Johnsburg had no trouble beating Woodstock, 46-7, on Friday night to improve to 7-0 on the season. But when Woodstock fullback Sean Doyle crossed the end zone for the Blue Streaks’ lone score with 7:23 to play in the fourth quarter, it snapped an impressive defensive streak for Johnsburg.

The Skyhawks had not surrendered a point since a Sept. 2 victory over Rochelle. That included four consecutive shutouts (against Richmond-Burton, Stillman Valley, Burlington Central and Woodstock North).

Rochelle tallied a touchdown with 11:35 to play in the fourth quarter of that Sept. 2 game. Between Rochelle’s touchdown with 11:35 remaining and Woodstock’s score with 7:23 to play – including the 19 scoreless quarters between them – Johnsburg held its opponent scoreless for 244 minutes and 12 seconds of playing time.

That breaks down to more than four hours of continuous football without surrendering a single point.

Giants’ rarity: Alden-Hebron fell to 2-5 and will miss the Class 1A playoffs for only the second time in coach John Lalor’s 14 seasons.

“I feel bad for the kids,” Lalor said.

“Yeah it hurts, it hurts the program though. It doesn’t matter, yeah I want to go to the playoffs, the coaches want to go to the playoffs, but it should hurt the kids, because they’re the ones hearing it from the fans and the past alums and it’s like, yeah, they should learn from that. That’s what you try build when you build a program, a strong tradition to where there should be disappointment if you don’t go to the playoffs.”

Patriots dominate Browns in Brady’s season debut The ASSOCIATED PRESS

CLEVELAND – Tom Brady, looking razor-sharp at times and relatively rust-free after serving his four-game “Deflategate” suspension, passed for 406 yards and three touchdowns to Martellus Bennett in his hyped return, and the New England Patriots thumped the Cleveland Browns, 33-13, on Sunday.

He took out some of that built-up frustration on the Browns (0-5), throwing for 271 yards in the first half, as the Patriots (4-1) rebounded after being shut out last week at home by Buffalo.

LIONS 24, EAGLES 23: At Detroit, Matt Prater kicked a 29-yard field goal with 1:28 left and Darius Slay made an overthe-shoulder interception on the next snap, helping the Lions hand Carson Wentz his first loss with a victory over the Eagles (3-1). The Lions (2-3) had lost three straight.

REDSKINS 16, RAVENS 10: At Baltimore, the Redskins used an 85-yard punt return by Jamison Crowder and an uncharacteristically strong performance by their defense to beat the Ravens.

It was the third straight win for the Redskins (3-2), who came in with the

league’s 29th-ranked defense. Washington allowed a touchdown on the game’s opening drive and smothered the Ravens (3-2) the rest of the way.

STEELERS 31, JETS 13: At Pittsburgh, Ben Roethlisberger passed for 380 yards and four touchdowns and the surging Steelers pulled away in the second half for a win over the Jets (1-4).

Sammie Coates caught six passes for a career-high 139 yards and two scores, including a 72-yard catch-and-run for a score on Pittsburgh’s opening drive as the Steelers (4-1) moved the ball at will against a secondary missing injured star Darrelle Revis.

Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell racked up 154 yards of total offense, including a career-high nine receptions, while Antonio Brown caught nine passes for 78 yards and a touchdown.

TITANS 30, DOLPHINS 17: At Miami Gardens, Florida, Marcus Mariota threw for three touchdowns and ran for another score, helping the Titans overcome a handful of big plays by the Dolphins.

DeMarco Murray added 121 yards rushing for the Titans, who totaled 235 on the ground. They improved to 2-3, and Miami fell to 1-4.

VIKINGS 31, TEXANS 13: At Minneapolis, Adam Thielen caught a touchdown pass to cap Minnesota’s opening drive and finished with a career-high 127 yards, and the Vikings defense flustered Brock Osweiler and the Texans (3-2).

Robey-Coleman stepped in front of rookie receiver Pharoh Cooper and strolled down the sideline to put the Bills (3-2) ahead 23-16 with 3:54 left in the third quarter.

RAIDERS 34, CHARGERS 31: At Oakland, Calif., Derek Carr threw a go-ahead 21yard touchdown pass to Michael Crabtree on a fourth-and-2 gamble and added another TD pass to Amari Cooper to lead the Raiders to a victory over the mistake-prone Chargers (1-4).

The Raiders (4-1) took over with 2 minutes left and ran out most of the clock to get a third straight win for the first time in five years and hand San Diego its 10th straight division loss.

Game 3 pitching matchup is must-see VIEWS Rick Morrissey

SAN FRANCISCO – No matter whose side you’re on, whether you bleed Cubbie blue or bleed whatever a Giants fan bleeds (Ghirardelli chocolate?), you might want to take a moment to appreciate what is about to take place here.

Yes, the Cubs are on the verge of sweeping a playoff series for the first time in what seems like recorded human history, and, yes, the Giants are talking about winning three straight games to take this best-of-five National League Division Series, mostly because they’ve pulled that rabbit out of a baseball cap before.

But along with all the drama, two of the biggest big-name pitchers will take the mound for their respective teams in Game 3 Monday night. Jake Arrieta, last season’s Cy Young Award winner, will pitch for the Cubs, and Madison Bumgarner, who seems to take cruel pleasure in squeezing the life out of playoff opponents, for the Giants. Two alphas, two cowboys, two baseball carnivores, although with a shot of kale juice thrown in for the health-conscious Arrieta.

Pretty good, no?

A Cubs fan can hope that Arrieta will channel his 2015 self and reduce the Giants’ batting order, already charred, to ashes. A baseball fan can hope that both

Wade’s emergence as a three-point threat is just one of the positives to come out of training camp two weeks in, and even better news for Hoiberg is there’s still more than two weeks to fix what hasn’t been working.

THE GOOD

1. All business – Veteran Taj Gibson came in knowing that he would have to battle with Nikola Mirotic and Bobby Portis for a starting spot, and has completely outplayed the competition so far.

Even better for Gibson is he’s doing it in his free-agent year.

2. Good vibes – Unlike last training camp and into the regular season, this version of the Bulls players seem to actually like each other. Not a must for a team looking to get back to resembling a playoff team, but definitely an upgrade over last year’s traveling circus of dysfunction.

3. McBuckets – Scoring won’t be an

issue for third-year player Doug McDermott, but defense has been. The early reviews out of camp were that McDermott’s technique is vastly improved, and his understanding of film study is a big reason why.

THE BAD

1. Valentine’s day – The ankle injury to Denzel Valentine was a setback, especially with Hoiberg looking for a consistent backup point guard. Valentine could play the last two preseason games, but is missing valuable time for a rookie.

2. The Rondo effect – The offense has looked choppy with Rajon Rondo at the point, but then again the Bulls aren’t exactly used to playing alongside a high IQ point guard. Give it time.

3. Oh Niko – The 18-point showing on Saturday was huge for Mirotic, but doesn’t change the fact that he has a history of inconsistency in what could be his final season with the Bulls. It’s go time.

Lobaton’s HR, Murphy’s RBIs lift Nats past LA; NLDS tied The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – Jose Lobaton got the chance to play in the postseason because of a teammate’s late-September injury and, boy, did the little-used backup catcher make the most of it.

Lobaton hit a three-run homer, Daniel Murphy provided more expected production by driving in a pair of insurance runs, and Washington’s bullpen threw 42/3 scoreless innings Sunday, leading the Nationals past the Los Angeles Dodgers, 5-2, in a rain-postponed Game 2 to even their NL Division Series at 1-all.

The Nationals trailed 2-0 in the fourth when No. 8 hitter Lobaton put them ahead for good by connecting off a curveball from Rich Hill after the Dodgers lefthander walked Murphy and hit a batter.

Hard to see this coming: Lobaton did not do much at the plate in 2016, batting .232 in only 99 at-bats overall, including 1 for 15 against lefties. Then again, that lone hit also was a homer, and also against the Dodgers – off Scott Kazmir in July.

Lobaton didn’t even start the playoff opener, in fact. He sat behind rookie Pedro Severino, who had played all of 18 games in the majors.

Murphy, in contrast, has been Washington’s best hitter all season, considered a top contender for league MVP honors. Indeed, fans chanted those three letters after each hit as he went 3 for 3,

extra rest.

Sunday’s scheduled 4:08 p.m. start was called off around 2 p.m. – long before the gates had opened or the starting pitchers had begun to warm up; it will be made up at 6:08 p.m. Monday.

It almost sounded like idle talk coming from a 34-year-old NBA player on the back nine of his career.

Dwyane Wade swore that the 13 years on the flip side of his basketball card were an aberration.

“I’m a better three-point shooter than people think,’’ Wade said with a smirk early on in training camp.

Not that being a career 28.4 percent shooter from long range was exactly setting a high bar, but maybe there’s something to his explanation that Miami never needed him to show off that skillset.

While three preseason games is a small sample size, Wade’s three-point shooting is definitely trending in an upward direction.

Starting in last season’s playoffs, Wade hit 52 percent from three in 14 games, and since putting on the uniform of his hometown Bulls was 5-for-7 from long range, including a 3-for-4 showing

against Indiana on Saturday night.

“Just freedom of mind to shoot them,’’ Wade said of his evolution. “It’s different. You know, obviously, last year if you look at our roster [in Miami], the way it was made up, I was the playmaker. I was put in a position to be the playmaker, and I wasn’t the one shooting threes at all, until the playoffs.

Then they took some Dwyane things away and I was Wade shooting them.

“I’m not saying I’m going to shoot 52 percent like I did in the playoffs, but early in training camp coach [Fred Hoiberg] talked to me about being comfortable shooting the three ball and getting my feet ready and stepping up and shooting the three ball. Kenyans Kirui and Kiplagat run to victory The ASSOCIATED PRESS

CHICAGO – Abel Kirui of Kenya pulled ahead of defending champion Dickson Chumba for good in the final mile to win the Chicago Marathon on Sunday.

Florence Kiplagat of Kenya won her second straight Chicago Marathon women’s title.

The men’s lead alternated between Kirui and Chumba for the last few miles. The 34-year-old Kirui finished the 26.2-mile course in an unofficial time of 2 hours, 11 minutes, 23 seconds.

Chumba finished in 2:11:26. The 29-year-old Kenyan won last year’s Chicago Marathon in 2:09:25 and finished third in 2014.

The 29-year-old Kiplagat finished in an unofficial time of 2:21:32. She posted a winning time of 2:23:33 in Chicago last year and placed third in 2014.

The top five men’s finishers and top four women were all Kenyans.

In the men’s field, Gideon Kipketer was third (2:12:20), Paul Lonyangata was fourth (2:13:17) and Stephen SamAP photo bu was fifth (2:13:35).

The top American finishers were Diego Estrada of Flagstaff, Arizona, and Serena Burla of Stafford, Virginia.

Estrada placed eighth in the men’s field with a time of 2:13:56. Burla finished in 2:30:40 to place seventh in the women’s division.

Marcel Hug of Switzerland won the men’s wheelchair title in 1:32:57 to edge defending champion Kurt Fearnley of Australia, as both crossed the finish line almost simultaneously. Fearnley was seeking his sixth Chicago Marathon wheelchair championship.

Jimmie Johnson moves into 3rd round of NASCAR’s playoffs

The Associated Press CONCORD, N.C. – Stuck in the longest losing streak of his career, Jimmie Johnson had a chance for a critical win that could salvage this ho-hum season for Hendrick Motorsports.

Hardly a championship contender for most of this season, Johnson grabbed a victory at sun-soaked Charlotte Motor Speedway when nearly half the title contenders had horrible days.

The win Sunday was his third of the season, but snapped a 24-race losing streak dating to March. Johnson is the only Hendrick driver to visit victory lane this season, and this win earned him an automatic berth into the third round of the playoffs.

It’s the first time Johnson has made it out of the second round since the elimination format was introduced in

that elusive record-tying seventh title.

“We can’t sit back and celebrate too much on this,” Johnson said. “We’ve got to buckle down and get to work tomorrow and keep advancing our race cars. But this does buy us a couple weeks of freedom.”

The race was originally scheduled for Saturday night, but Hurricane Matthew washed out nearly the entire weekend and set up an 800-mile doubleheader of the Sprint Cup and Xfinity Series on Sunday. When the racing finally began on a beautiful North Carolina afternoon, it immediately shaped up as a Hendrick kind of day.

Panik looking to shed his rep as inconsistent player

mlazerus@suntimes.com With every deft pass, every strong move to the net, every solid hit along the boards, it all seemed to make less and less sense.

Why didn’t Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock want anything to do with Richard Panik, a skilled, young player, as he started a massive rebuilding project in Toronto? Why was Panik banished to the American Hockey League after scoring 11 goals in 76 NHL games a year earlier?

Why did the Leafs deal away Panik for career minor-leaguer Jeremy Morin? And before any of that, why did the Tampa Bay Lightning give up on Panik so quickly, waiving him after two partial NHL seasons?

How did a guy who couldn’t play for the worst team in the NHL find himself on Jonathan Toews’ right wing on the then-defending Stanley Cup champions?

“Consistency,” Panik said, matter-of-factly. “It’s been a problem with me pretty much every season I was in the NHL.” Indeed, that’s always been the knock on Panik. He disappears for shifts, for periods, for games at a time. He’ll follow up a stellar game with a brutal one. He’s an intriguing player, but a maddening one. But he’s also only 25 years old. And if his fourmonth stint with the Blackhawks last sea-

son was any indication, he might finally be ready to shed that “inconsistent” label and become a reliable NHL player.

“I’m excited about [Panik] because there’s a lot of potential there that he really hasn’t tapped into,” assistant coach Kevin Dineen said. “We’ve talked about some of the younger players, but that happens for players who also have a few years of professional [experience] under their belt. All of a sudden, it really clicks in.”

For Panik, that happened in the playoffs, when he was one of the Hawks’ most impressive – and consistent – players during the series against St. Louis. Panik had three assists in six games against the Blues and earned the first shot at playing alongside Toews to start this season.

The Blues series was a lightbulb moment for Panik, who suddenly felt liberated from both expectations and doubt – comfortable in the Hawks’ system after four months, and trusted by a head coach for possibly the first time in his NHL career.

“They gave me a chance right away,” Panik said. “When I got traded here, I was in the AHL and the organization brought me right up to the first team, so that helped with the confidence and how I felt on the ice. You feel like the organization cares about you, you know? They know how you can play and they try to help you.

You’ve just got to take that shot and repay them for trusting you.”
