WASHINGTON – More federal money finally is available to fight Zika even as the news worsens. Babies who at first seem to have escaped the virus’ devastating hallmark defect – an abnormally small head at birth – might not be out of the woods after all. Brazilian doctors have counted a small number of babies who at birth had a normal-sized head and only later were found to have problems. They have delayed neurodevelopment. At 5 months, one could use one hand but not the other. Later on, some even developed that defect, called microcephaly. The brain and skull weren’t growing properly after birth, instead of before.

“Microcephaly is only the tip of the iceberg, only the thing we see when the baby is born,” Dr. Vanessa Van der Linden, a pediatric neurologist in Recife, Brazil, told a meeting at the National Institutes of Health where she outlined a long list of Zika-related abnormalities.

To children’s health experts, the message is clear. Intense study is needed of babies born to Zika-infected mothers to learn the range of health problems they may face.

“It is just critical to evaluate the entire child. Even in the child who does not have microcephaly, that doesn’t mean no evaluation is needed,” said Dr. Catherine Spong of the NIH’s National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, which despite budget constraints has begun research to better understand the risk to babies.

Congress last week passed a budget bill that includes $1.1 billion to address the Zika crisis. It’s just over half the total emergency money that President Barack Obama requested last February.

But one of the nonprofit’s programs focuses on another group – siblings of children with special needs.

During the school year, Crystal Lake-based Options and Advocacy holds monthly “Sibshops” to give brothers and sisters of children with special needs a chance to talk about what they love about their siblings, what they struggle with and a chance to have some

Sibshops started about six years ago, said Winter Noe, Sibshop facilitator and program manager with Options and Advocacy. The program follows

curriculum set by the Sibling Support Project, which conducts the workshops internationally.

Sibshops are geared toward children from 8 years old to 14 years old, and there are about 15 to 20 siblings who attend each workshop.

“A lot of the common concerns that we hear from kids really have to do with feeling like maybe they’re the only person in the planet who could possibly having this going on in his life,” Noe said. “So to suddenly realize there are all these people right there in their community experiencing similar experiences is really powerful, and they really

not really paying attention to anything we were taught in DARE, I tried it. And that’s all it took was that one time for me to get hooked.

NICK LARSEN n WHO IS HE: Nick Larsen, outreach coordinator for A Man in Recovery n WHERE HE’S FROM: McHenry n HIS MISSION: Help others who are suffering from a drug addiction McHenry resident Nick Larsen had been using heroin since he was a teenager. Now, he’s working on staying sober and helping others get sober as well.

In January, Larsen decided he was done abusing and joined A Man in Recovery Foundation. Founded by former heroin addict Tim Ryan, the nonprofit organization’s goal is to help save the lives of opiate addicts. Even though Larsen was an addict for about half his life, Larsen currently volunteers for the foundation and tries to help young abusers overcome their addictions.

Northwest Herald reporter Nate Linhart sat down with Larsen to talk about his former heroin addiction, current sobriety and newfound mission to help others.

Linhart: When did you start abusing drugs, specifically heroin?

Larsen: I started smoking pot around

11-years-old. But my demise was heroin, and I started that at the age of 13.

Linhart: What drew you to heroin?

Larsen: It was out of curiosity. I had a

friend who encouraged me to do it. And

Linhart: So I know you’ve been sober for a little while now – when did the recovery process start?

Larsen: My first attempt at recovery

was when I was 14. But opiate withdrawal made me start to lose my mind. ... I graduated high school at the age of 18 in 2003, but from that point on, that’s when heroin became my life and took over.

Linhart: When did you get involved with A Man In Recovery then?

Larsen: I got involved with A Man

in Recovery in January of this year. I had been in McHenry County Jail for four months. Jason Beaty, who has been my best friend since I was a kid, I saw him when I got out and he was all right. I found out he was doing good now because he joined the A Man in Recovery program. … So when I got out of jail and hit the streets, something in me changed.

This overwhelming feeling came over me. … So I called Jason and my friend Michael Young, seeing their changes, and asked them how do I get involved with the program.

Linhart: How has the program helped?

Larsen: A Man in Recovery has been

a huge help in my sobriety. It keeps my feet to the ground, and it ultimately led me to my job at Banyan [Treatment Center]. I’m consistently helping people in this program. I remember since the second time I went into treatment, they said I should just become a drug counselor. And in a sense, I’m that and I’m not.

I’m more the groundwork guy.

Linhart: Can you elaborate on what you do for A Man in Recovery?

Larsen: I’m out here for people who want to stop abusing or are trying to remain sober. I have volunteered all my free time to A Man in Recovery since I joined. I had to stop thinking treatment is the end-all answer, and I had to start getting involved in the solution outside of the meetings.

Linhart: I know you’ve said you have a daughter. Can you tell me a little bit about your daughter and your relationship with her?

Larsen: One major goal I have is for me

to actively be a part of my daughter’s life.

The first four years of her life I was gone, meaning I was in prison. We’ve had brief moments where we had relationships. …

But this time around I realized if I want to be a part of my daughter’s life, I have to be sober. … I know she’s going to come looking for me someday. She was born with opiates in her system because her mom and I were addicts, so when she could possibly start abusing someday, I want to be there for her. And if it takes me everything, I’ll never stop preparing for that potential day. I don’t want her to see the life that I lived. I don’t want anybody to see that life.

Linhart: What would you need to do to see your daughter again?

Larsen: I really don’t have a say-so

anymore. I signed my parental rights over to my parents. They are in the middle of the adoption process. ... The only way I’m going to be able to see her is if I stay sober for her. ... I’m just trying to show my family I’ve consistently stayed out of jail for the last nine months. And I just want to say, my decision to join A Man in Recovery and get sober isn’t just about me, it’s not even just about my daughter, but it’s about helping anyone and everyone I can.

Regency Beauty Institute announces immediate closure

bkeeperman@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – National cosmetology academy Regency Beauty Institute has announced permanent closure of its 79 campuses, including one in Crystal Lake.

Declining enrollment and lack of funding led to the abrupt announcement last week, officials said.

“This is incredibly difficult news for everyone affected: especially our students, teachers, and staff,” an announcement on Regency’s website read.

“We recognize that some of you may be finding this out for the first time by reading this. We are truly sorry for the abrupt nature of this information.”

Student records will be sent to students and the state cosmetology board by mail. Regency plans to work with area beauty schools to secure teach-out options, which means students could complete the program at a different school.

The Crystal Lake location had about 64 students. Employees were informed of the closure via a conference call less than an hour before the announcement was posted, an employee on-site Friday said.

National cosmetology academy Regency Beauty Institute has announced permanent closure of all 79 of its campuses, including one in Crystal Lake. Regency Beauty Institute at Crystal Lake had about 64 students. said that the school was more than willing to work with former Regency students to find the best fit to finish their license. The school has worked with many transfer students over the years, she said.

“My advice to [students] would be to take a breath,” she said. “Step back.

Look at the different facilities out there.

Talk to administrators. Talk to students. Ask for help if you need it and go from there.”

Students shouldn’t be put off the industry by the abrupt displacement, she said.

“It’s an excellent industry to be a part

of. It’s one of the strongest,” she said.

“I’d hate to have kids get a bad taste in their mouth right now. … The industry itself is strong. A.B.C is doing very well.

There is no reason for them to be fearful at all.”

Cosmetology and Spa Academy in Crystal Lake encourages students to call about its program on its website. School officials weren’t immediately available for comment on specific financial and transfer options. A new semester will begin Oct. 4.

Students may be eligible for a type of federal loan forgiveness if they meet certain requirements.

Hope Faith Cure Foundation set to host general wellness talk Saturday

nlinhart@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – The Hope Faith Cure Foundation will hold a general wellness discussion Saturday for people with lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Crystal Lake’s Holiday Inn, 8001 S. Route 31.

Established in 2015, the local nonprofit organization’s mission is to raise awareness and help find a cure for rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and Crohn’s. It was founded by Cary resident Adina Walters, who suffers from all three of those diseases.

“This discussion will give people the chance to learn more about the foundation and will give advice on how to live healthier.”

To the Electors of the State of Illinois: The Illinois Constitution establishes a structure for government and laws. There are three ways to initiate change to the Illinois Constitution: (1) a constitutional convention may propose changes to any part; (2) the General Assembly may propose changes to any part; or (3) a petition initiative may propose amendments limited to structural and procedural subjects contained in the Legislative Article. The people of Illinois must approve any changes to the Constitution before they become effective. The purpose of this document is to inform you of proposed changes to the Illinois Constitution and provide you with a brief explanation and a summary of the arguments in favor of and in opposition to the proposed amendment.

Proposed changes in the existing constitutional amendment are indicated by underscoring all new matter and by crossing with a line all matter which is to be deleted.

PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO ADD SECTION 11 TO ARTICLE IX OF THE ILLINOIS CONSTITUTION ARTICLE IX – REVENUE SECTION 11. TRANSPORTATION FUNDS (a) No moneys, including bond proceeds, derived from taxes, fees, excises, or license taxes relating to registration, title, or operation or use of vehicles, or related to the use of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, airports, or to fuels used for propelling vehicles, or derived from taxes, fees, excises, or license taxes relating to any other transportation infrastructure or transportation operation, shall be expended for purposes other than as provided in subsections (b) and (c). (b) Transportation funds may be expended for the following: the costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation, including statutory refunds and adjustments provided in those laws; payment of highway obligations; costs for construction, reconstruction, maintenance, repair, and betterment of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, airports, or other forms of transportation; and other statutory highway purposes. Transportation funds may also be expended for the State or local share of highway funds to match federal aid highway funds, and expenses of grade separation of highways and railroad crossings, including protection of at-grade highways and railroad crossings, and, with respect to local governments, other transportation purposes as authorized by law. (c) The costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation shall be limited to direct program expenses related to the following: the enforcement of traffic, railroad, and motor carrier laws; the safety of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, or airports; and the construction, reconstruction, improvement, repair, maintenance, operation, and administration of highways, under any related provisions of law or any purpose related or incident to, including grade separation of highways and railroad crossings. The limitations to the costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation under this subsection (c) shall also include direct program expenses related to workers’ compensation claims for death or injury of employees of the State’s transportation agency; the acquisition of land and the erection of buildings for highway purposes, including the acquisition of highway rights-of-way or for investigations to determine the reasonable anticipated future highway needs; and the making of surveys, plans, specifications, and estimates for the construction and maintenance of flight strips and highways. The expenses related to the construction and maintenance of flight strips and highways under this subsection (c) are for the purpose of providing access to military and naval reservations, defense-industries, defense-industry sites, and sources of raw materials, including the replacement of existing highways and highway connections shut off from general use at military and naval reservations, defense-industries, and defense-industry sites, or the purchase of rights-of-way. (d) None of the revenues described in subsection (a) of this Section shall, by transfer, offset, or otherwise, be diverted to any purpose other than those described in subsections (b) and (c) of this Section. (e) If the General Assembly appropriates funds for a mode of transportation not described in this Section, the General Assembly must provide for a dedicated source of funding. (f) Federal funds may be spent for any purposes authorized by federal law.

EXPLANATION The proposed amendment adds a new Section to the Revenue Article of the Illinois Constitution that provides revenue generated from transportation related taxes and fees (referred to as “transportation funds”) shall be used exclusively for transportation related purposes. Transportation related taxes and fees include motor fuel taxes, vehicle registration fees, and other taxes and user fees dedicated to public highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit (buses and rail), ports, or airports.

Under the proposed amendment, transportation funds may be used by the State or local governments only for the following purposes: (1) costs related to administering transportation and vehicle laws, including public safety purposes and the payment of obligations such as bonds; (2) the State or local share necessary to secure federal funds or for local government transportation purposes as authorized by law; (3) the construction, reconstruction, improvement, repair, maintenance, and operation of highways, mass transit, and railroad crossings; (4) expenses related to workers’ compensation claims for death or injury of transportation agency employees; and (5) to purchase land for building highways or buildings for to be used for highway purposes.

This new Section is a limitation on the power of the General Assembly or a unit of local government to use, divert, or transfer transportation funds for a purpose other than transportation. It does not, and is not intended to, impact or change the way in which the State and local governments use sales taxes, including the sales and excise tax on motor fuel, or alter home rule powers granted under this Constitution. It does not seek to change the way in which the State funds programs administered by the Illinois Secretary of State, Illinois Department of Transportation, and operations by the Illinois State Police directly dedicated to the safety of roads, or entities or programs funded by units of local government. Further, the Section does not impact the expenditure of federal funds, which may be spent for any purpose authorized by federal law.

“Aunt Blabby” will ask the siblings for advice on how to deal with situations such as being embarrassed of a brother or sister with special needs when friends come over, or how to go out to dinner if your brother or sister with special needs is a messy eater, Noe said.

For Heidi Fish of Union, Sibshops are a safe place for her children to talk.

She and her husband, Robert Fish, have four children, including 9-yearold Arthur, who has DiGeorge syndrome, a chromosome disorder.

Eleven-year-old Rebecca is participating in the current Sibshop session, but all of Arthur’s siblings have attended at some point, Heidi Fish said.

“It normalizes it for you because if you’re never doing life with anybody who has a family like you do; then even for adults, people just don’t really get your issues, and they don’t speak your language and they don’t have the same experience or compassion all the time,” Heidi Fish said.

Another problem Sibshops helps address is that sometimes, typically developing children think that their parents love the disabled child more because their needs are so demanding, Heidi Fish said.

There aren’t many other opportunities for siblings of children with special needs, Noe and Sullivan said, so sometimes they bring private providers who work with children with disabilities to Sibshops to show them how important it is to also pay attention to siblings.

“We’re trying to use Sibshops somewhat as a catalyst to encourage other sibling opportunities in other places,” Noe said.

Each session ends with a celebration, and Options and Advocacy brings in a panel of adult siblings of people with special needs to share what they’re doing in their careers, Noe and Sullivan said.

“Almost all of them are in helping professions, and what they bring to that is a whole different perspective having grown up with it and living with it,” Sullivan said. “And it gives you such hope and joy for the world to see these young people and what they going to bring to our world.”

GENE EMERY ZIMMERMAN Born: Aug. 15, 1948; in Harvard Died: Sept. 24, 2016; in Harvard

Gene Emery Zimmerman, 68, of Harvard, passed away at his home on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016.

He was born Aug. 15, 1948, in Harvard to Elzo A. and Helen F. (Menge) Zimmerman.

He loved taking motorcycle trips and enjoyed photography. When Gene was younger, he was the mechanic for his brother, as he raced stock cars. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Gene was worked in the quality control department at Fox Tool until retirement.

Survivors include his siblings, Richard (Deanna) Zimmerman of Sharon, IL, Merry Szabo of Watertown, WI, Linda Zimmerman of Sharon, WI, and William Zimmerman of Alden; numerous nieces and nephews; and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Sandra Zimmerman; and brother, Robert Zimmerman.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, 2016, at Saunders & McFarlin Funeral Home, 107 W. Sumner St., Harvard, IL 60033. Words of Remembrance will follow at 7 p.m. Inurnment will be at a later date in Mount Auburn Cemetery.

Curtis Roosevelt, FDR’s oldest grandchild, dies at 86

By ANGELA CHARLTON PARIS – Curtis Roosevelt, who lived in the White House as a child when his grandfather was president and worked for two decades at the United Nations, has died at 86.

The oldest grandchild of Franklin D. and Eleanor Roosevelt died of a heart attack in Saint-Bonnet-du-Gard in southern France on Sep. 26.

Curtis Roosevelt insisted in writing before his death that he didn’t want a funeral service. Instead, according to his widow, Marina Roosevelt, he said, “If you must do something, then get together and have a good time, with wine and cheese, and make awful martinis like my grandfather did.”

Roosevelt’s childhood in the spotlight marked the rest of his life, as did his grandfather’s exceptional legacy.

Curtis Roosevelt, born April 19, 1930, when his grandfather was governor of New York, was the son of Anna Roosevelt, the president’s eldest child and only daughter.

Curtis and his younger sister, Anna, moved in with their grandparents as his father Curtis Bean Dall’s stock market career suffered in the Depression and his parents divorced.

Dubbed “Buzzie” and “Sistie,” they lived relatively shielded from the difficulty of the era, shuttling between Washington and vacations at the Roosevelt family estate in Hyde Park, N.Y. The children lived in the White House for several years until their

mother married a newspaper reporter, John Boettiger.

“He never really got over those early impressions,” his sister, Anna Eleanor Seagraves, said Saturday from her home in Bethesda, Maryland. Their lives took different paths, and she described their relations as “cordial” but not close – until their elderly years, when they re-established a bond.

Curtis Roosevelt went on to work as an educator and political reformer in New York, and then became a diplomat at the U.N. from 1964 to 1983, where he notably served as liaison with nongovernmental organizations.

He was following in the footsteps of his grandmother, Eleanor Roosevelt, who was a member of the first American delegation to the U.N. in 1945, and later served as chairman of the U.N. Commission on Human Rights from 1947 to 1951.

In his memoirs, Curtis Roosevelt had both praise and criticism for his grandparents, seeing them as more engrossed in world politicking than family matters. But they always loomed large for him, Marina Roosevelt told The Associated Press from their home in Saint-Bonnet-du-Gard.

Roosevelt defended his grandfather’s efforts to hide his polio-stricken legs from the American public.

“FDR was a Victorian,” Roosevelt wrote. “You do not display your illness, and if somebody asks you how you are, you say, ‘Fine.’ Besides, he wanted a practical way to carry on with what he had to do and who he was.”

In 2005, Curtis Roosevelt joined grandsons of Soviet leader Josef Stalin and British wartime leader Winston Churchill in a debate over the legacy of their grandfathers’ historic summit at Yalta 60 years earlier, which laid the groundwork for the post-war division of Europe and the Cold War. “Nobody got what they wanted from Yalta except the Russians, who were in a position to get it,” Curtis Roosevelt said at the meeting at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands.

He said that for his grandfather, the decisions made at Yalta were mostly about accepting reality after the United States’ late entry into the war. The Yalta conference took place as Stalin’s army was poised for the final attack on Berlin after occupying Poland. Stalin had the largest army in Europe, with 12 million soldiers, while Eisenhower’s 4 million men were still west of the Rhine.

Roosevelt’s fourth marriage proved the most lasting. Widow Marina hopes to fulfill his wishes for an informal memorial gathering at the Thanksgiving holiday in late November.

“It seems like an appropriate moment. He used to love Thanksgiving,” she said, describing big dinners in their French home with an eclectic guest list. “We could always find some lurking Americans.”

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – When a loved one dies, laws cover how their houses, cars, and other property are passed on to relatives. But the rules are murkier – and currently far more restrictive – when it comes to pictures on Facebook, emails to friends or relatives and even financial records stored in online cloud accounts.

Google, Facebook and other companies have said a federal privacy law approved decades before digital storage became common prevents them from releasing electronic memories or records unless the account owner grants permission – even if the person is dead.

Without an estate plan, families must try to crack their loved one’s passwords or take the costly step of litigating the matter to access photos and emails – and some have, with little success.

The laws governing how to divide belongings after someone dies have not caught up with the technological advances that have permeated the ways people communicate, but states have begun trying to bridge that gap. This year, Illinois was one of 19 states that passed similar laws to clarify what internet companies can release after someone dies and when information should remain inaccessible.

Police fatally shoot man outside Markham nightclub

MARKHAM – Illinois State Police said they are investigating the fatal shooting of a man by police in southwest suburban Chicago.

State Police Master Sgt. Jason Bradley said the shooting happened early Sunday outside a nightclub in Markham. Bradley said a Markham police officer fatally shot the man.

The Cook County medical examiner identified the slain man as 36-year-old Donte Jones of Maywood, who died at a nearby hospital.

The federal Electronic Communications Privacy Act, passed in 1986, doesn’t anticipate the release of online information when executing wills. Because probate law is typically left to the states, the laws legislatures are passing could effectively set new rules.

The Chicago-based Uniform Law Commission wrote the legislation states are passing with the support of internet companies, but that wasn’t always the case. Initially, the commission wanted administrators of a person’s estate to have access to everything from users’ accounts in cases where someone did not leave instructions about what to do with their digital assets.

Man accused of causing $13 million in losses at firm

CHICAGO – A federal grand jury in Chicago has indicted a man accused of fraudulently causing $13 million in losses

Facebook lets users choose a “legacy contact” to access their account, and Gmail has an “account trustee” option.

In instances where people use those options, the companies’ agreements with them will supersede the state laws.

Even with the new laws, planning is necessary at a time when many still don’t think about the contents of their internet accounts as property.

“This is one of those many examples where the law really gets its power by giving people the knowledge that it exists,” said Washington state Sen. Jamie Pedersen, the sponsor of the law passed there this year.

The promise of privacy companies offer users has led to heartache and frustration for the families of account holders who have had to go to court for the right to access their relative’s emails and photos.

In 2005, Yahoo turned over more than 10,000 pages of emails in a CD to the family of Lance Cpl. Justin Ellsworth, a Marine from Michigan whose family went to court for the material.

But others have not been successful.

The family of John Ajemain in Massachusetts has been unable to get his emails from Yahoo after his death in 2006. And in 2012, Facebook quashed a subpoena from the family of Sahar Daftary, a model who fell to her death from an apartment building in Manchester, England, in 2008.

Shooting at Chicago train stop leaves 1 dead, 1 wounded

CHICAGO – Chicago police said a shooting outside a Southwest Side train station has left one man dead and another injured.

Police said officers responding to a fight about 7:30 a.m.

Sunday found a 20-year-old man shot in the neck and a 24-year-old man wounded in the buttocks. Police said the 20-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting occurred outside the California station on the Chicago Transit Authority’s Pink Line. Police said no pedestrians were being allowed in the station and that trains were bypassing it.

Police said they had no one in custody.

NEW YORK – Ever defiant, Donald Trump and his Republican allies embraced a report Sunday that said the New York businessman might not have paid federal income taxes for nearly two decades after he and his companies lost nearly $916 million in a single year.

The unexpected revelation punctuated a week of missteps and aggressive personal attacks from the Republican presidential contender, with early voting already underway in some states and Election Day quickly approaching.

If there was a bright spot to the explosive story about his taxes in The New York Times, Trump supporters said, it was that it may shift the national conversation away from Trump’s weeklong feud with a former beauty queen he called “Miss Piggy” as he shamed her for gaining weight, and his unfounded suggestion Hillary Clinton may have cheated on her husband.

“He’s not been on message,” said Barry Bennett, a former Trump adviser. “A week was wasted where he could have been talking about the heroin epidemic and jobs and ISIS. All the money in the world can’t get that time back.”

The mounting challenges injected a new sense of urgency into Trump’s White House bid with the next presidential debate a week away.

Trump is deciding whether to use the debate stage to attack Clinton’s role in the infidelities of her husband, former President Bill Clinton’s. That’s according to a person with intimate knowledge of Trump’s thinking as his senior advisers huddled Sunday for a rare session of debate preparation. The person was not authorized to discuss publicly the private conversations and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Recorder recovered from N.J. crash wasn’t working

HOBOKEN, N.J. – One data recorder recovered so far from the New Jersey Transit commuter train that crashed in Hoboken killing one and injuring more than 100 others was not functioning on the day of the accident, officials said Sunday.

The locomotive’s recorder is supposed to store information on train speed.

National Transportation Safety Board vice chair T. Bella Dinh-Zarr said Sunday afternoon that she’s “hopeful” the data recorder in the cab control car in the front of the train is functional. Investigators haven’t been able to extract that recorder because it’s under a collapsed section of the train station’s roof.

“We still have no firm date on when the controlling car can be accessed so we can” obtain the second recorder, Dinh-Zarr said.

There is a federal requirement that the lead locomotive have a working data recorder, said NTSB investigator Jim Southworth.

“That’s something we’ll see when we get in there,” he said.

Dinh-Zarr also said that the train’s engineer, Thomas Gallagher, told NTSB investigators that he was well-rested before arriving to work that morning and that the train was operating properly before it crashed Thursday morning.

The train’s conductor was also interviewed, and he said he didn’t see anything unusual about the speed of the train, Dinh-Zarr said.

The signals on the tracks leading to Hoboken Terminal appear to be working normally and officials completed a walking inspection of the track, finding nothing that would have affected

the performance of the train, the NTSB said Saturday. Investigators have obtained video from other trains that were inside the train station when the crash occurred.

Signs posted at a New Jersey Transit maintenance facility in Hoboken, dated February, said there had been 10 incidents involving trains in the prior two months, including five derailments.

The sign said the “serious incidents reflect a dangerous trend” and that the main cause of the incidents appeared to

be caused by human error.

A spokesman for New Jersey Transit didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

New Jersey Transit trains have been involved in more than 150 accidents that caused more than $4.8 million in damage to tracks or equipment since 2011, and the commuter rail has paid more than $500,000 to settle safety violations, according to federal data.

Federal Railroad Administration information shows that NJ Transit settled 183 safety violations – ranging from employee drug and alcohol use to violations of railroad operating rules or practices – since Jan. 1, 2011. The settlement payments include about $70,000 for more than a dozen safety violations in 2014 and 2015. Statistics for the current year are not yet available.

Months before Thursday’s deadly commuter train crash in Hoboken, New Jersey, federal rail officials found dozens of violations during an audit focusing on NJ Transit’s safety and operations, a U.S. official confirmed Saturday.

The official, who was familiar with the railroad administration audit, spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the official wasn’t authorized to speak publicly about an ongoing investigation.

The railroad administration began an audit in June after noticing an uptick in rail incidents and found “dozens of safety violations” that needed to be fixed immediately, the official said.

RICHMOND, Va. – With the first presidential debate complete and its spin cycle nearly over, the two understudies are getting ready to take the main stage.

The vice presidential debate Tuesday will be the only time Republican Mike Pence and Democrat Tim Kaine will have the nation’s political attention all to themselves, away from their much more well-known running mates.

The stakes will be lower than the three presidential debates, but will give each largely undefined candidate a chance to make a mark on a national audience.

Running mates rarely overshadow the top of the ticket, although Sarah Palin caused a sensation as Republican John McCain’s pick in 2008. But voters always have a reason to size up the people who would be next in line for the presidency.

The 2016 candidates are older than

the norm. Though their doctors said they are fit to serve, Hillary Clinton, who will be 69 before the election, has had several health problems in recent years while Donald Trump, 70, has for Sen. Tim months held off disclos- Kaine ing much about his own fitness.

Pence, Trump’s running mate, is taking a decidedly un-Trump like approach to the vice presidential debate. He’s preparing for it.

The Indiana governor and former 12-year congressman held mock debate sessions with Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker as a stand-in, studying up on issues likely to be raised and making sure he avoids the criticisms of being unprepared that dogged Trump after his uneven performance a week ago.

“We’re going to do our level best to be ready,” Pence told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt this past week.

Pence was spending the weekend

back home in Indianapolis, taking a break from campaign travel to be with his family and continue informal debate preparations, spokesman Marc Lotter said.

Gov. Mike Clinton’s running Pence mate, a former Virginia governor and current U.S. senator, spent several days preparing for the debate in Raleigh, North Carolina, and in his hometown of Richmond, Virginia. The debate will take place at Longwood University, about an hour west of Richmond.

Helping Kaine is Washington, D.C., lawyer Robert Barnett, a veteran of prepping Democrats for debates. Kaine said he’s been “thinking hard” about what Pence’s record says “about the guy who chose him, because it really is more about Donald Trump than it is about Gov. Pence.”

Pence and Kaine are practiced public speakers with lengthy political careers who should bring a high level of polish

to the undercard debate. Pence is a former talk radio host; Kaine a former Harvard-trained trial lawyer.

But both have played dramatically different roles since they were picked to be the No. 2s.

Pence has frequently been on the hot seat defending, deflecting and explaining some of his unconventional running mate’s more inflammatory comments and views. It’s made for some awkward moments, with Pence defending Trump’s praise of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump’s apparent support for a policy of stop-and-frisk by police, and Trump’s feud with a Muslim-American family whose son, a U.S. Army captain, was killed while serving in Iraq in 2004.

After Monday’s presidential debate, Pence made the rounds on the television networks, where he broke with Trump on global warming. Trump has called warming a hoax, while Pence said after the debate that “there’s no question” human activity affects both the climate and the environment.

Syrian military calls on Aleppo rebels to surrender The ASSOCIATED PRESS BEIRUT – Syrian rebels and pro-government forces clashed Sunday on several fronts around Aleppo as the country’s military command called on militants to lay down their weapons and evacuate the contested city.

A day after pro-government forces captured the strategic al-Shuqeef hill north of the city, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group reported fierce fighting in areas near the hill and in the Bustan al-Basha neighborhood.

The two sides also clashed in Aleppo’s southern Sheikh Saeed neighborhood.

The government’s attempt to penetrate Aleppo’s opposition-held eastern side has been accompanied by a relentless campaign of airstrikes by Russian

and Syrian warplanes.

President Bashar Assad’s forces are depending on the Russia bombardment and Iran-backed militias for support.

A spokesman for the Nour el-Din el-Zinki rebel faction told The Associated Press that foreign fighters were actively participating in the government’s ground campaign. He said rebels could identify Lebanese and Iraqi militias by their flags.

An airstrike, meanwhile, targeted a rebel headquarters near the central city of Hama, killing at least six militants, the Observatory said. It was a setback for the rebel campaign to advance on the government-controlled city.

The U.N.’s humanitarian chief, Stephen O’Brien, reported that eastern Aleppo’s health system has been “all

but obliterated” by shelling and bombardment.

“Medical facilities are being hit one by one,” O’Brien said in a statement that called for a 48-hour humanitarian pause to the fighting each week.

The U.N. estimates 275,000 people are trapped by the government siege.

“We are in a race against time to protect and save civilians in eastern Aleppo city. They need our urgent action to bring an end to their living hell,” O’Brien said.

One of Aleppo’s largest hospitals, located in the eastern Sakhour neighborhood, was knocked out of service Saturday by the airstrikes, doctors and activists reported.

The Syrian military command said in a statement on state media that government forces would guarantee gunmen safe passage out of opposi-

tion-held neighborhoods.

Russia announced a month ago that the Syrian government would give safe passage to civilians wanting to leave eastern Aleppo. Few have accepted the offer.

The U.N. says at least 320 civilians have been killed since the government announced its offensive Sept. 22.

The European Union offered to help evacuate patients in Aleppo’s hospitals and deliver food, water and medical aid to besieged eastern districts.

In a statement, EU foreign policy chief Frederica Mogherini urged international players to unite to make the aid effort work “for the sake of humanity and the political future of Syria.”

The EU is mobilizing $25 million in emergency aid and offering to move patients to other medical facilities, including in Europe, if needed.

BOGOTA, Colombia – Colombians rejected a peace deal with leftist rebels by a razor-thin margin in a national referendum Sunday, scuttling years of painstaking negotiations and delivering a major setback to President Juan Manuel Santos, who vowed to keep a cease-fire in place and forge ahead with his efforts to end a half-century of war.

With more than 99 percent of polling stations reporting, 50.2 percent of ballots opposed the accord with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia while 49.8 percent favored it – a difference of less than 57,000 votes out of a total of 13 million. Pre-election polls had predicted the “yes” vote would win by an almost two-to-one margin.

“I won’t give up. I’ll continue search for peace until the last moment of my mandate,” Santos said in a televised address appealing for calm and in which he tried to reassure voters he was in complete control of the situation.

To save the accord, Santos ordered his negotiators to return to Cuba on Monday to consult with FARC leaders who watched the results come in from the communist island. He also promised to listen to opponents in a bid to strengthen the deal, which he said is Colombia’s best chance for ending a conflict that has killed 220,000 people and driven almost 8 million people from their homes.

BISHOFTU, Ethiopia – Dozens of people were crushed to death Sunday in a stampede after police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse an anti-government protest that grew out of a massive religious festival, witnesses said. The Oromia regional government confirmed the death toll at 52.

“I almost died in that place today,” said one shaken protester who gave his name only as Elias. Mud-covered and shoeless, he said he had been dragged out of a deep ditch that many people fell into as they tried to flee.

The first to fall in had suffocated, he said.

“Many people have managed to get out alive, but I’m sure many more others were down there,” he said. “It is really shocking.”

The stampede occurred in one of the East African country’s most politi-

cally sensitive regions, Oromia, which has seen months of sometimes deadly demonstrations demanding wider freedoms.

An estimated 2 million people were attending the annual Irrecha thanksgiving festival in the town of Bishoftu, southeast of the capital, Addis Ababa, when people began chanting slogans against the government, according to witnesses.

The chanting crowds pressed toward a stage where religious leaders were speaking, the witnesses said, and some threw rocks and plastic bottles.

Police responded with tear gas and rubber bullets, and people tried to flee.

Some were crushed in nearby ditches, witnesses said.

In its statement, the Oromia regional government blamed “evil acts masterminded by forces who are irresponsible,” and it denied that the deaths were caused by any actions by security forces.

BAKU, Azerbaijan – Pope Francis praised Azerbaijan on Sunday as a model for a world divided by violent extremism, sidestepping criticism of the government for the sake of encouraging religious tolerance in an often-volatile region where Catholics are a minority.

Francis avoided direct mention of criticism in the West over allegations of human rights abuses in Azerbaijan and a recent government referendum that extends the president’s term and gives him new powers.

The pope addressed a gathering of Muslim, Jewish and Orthodox leaders in Azerbaijan’s main mosque before heading back to Rome after a weekend Caucasus visit that first took him to Georgia.

“From this highly symbolic place, a heartfelt cry rises up once again: No more violence in the name of God!” Francis said. “May his most holy name be adored, not profaned or bartered as a commodity through forms of hatred and human opposition.”

The pope spent his 10 hours in the Azeri capital of Baku celebrating one of the world’s smallest Catholic communities and the good relations it enjoys with Azerbaijan’s Shiite Muslim majority and its Jewish, Orthodox and other religious minorities. There are only about 300 Azeri Catholics in Azerbaijan, although the community also includes several thousand foreigners.

“These good relations assume great significance for peaceful coexistence and for peace in the world,” Francis told President Ilham Aliyev and government officials. “They demonstrate that among followers of different religious confessions, cordial relations, respect and cooperation for the common good are possible.”

As a case in point, Francis celebrated Mass in Baku’s new Catholic Church, which was built with the financial help of Muslims and Jews, according to the Salesian priests who preside there. The Azeri government donated a plot of land on the outskirts of the capital after St. John Paul II visited in 2002, but it took the help of non-Christians to get the structure built.

Cellulitis is usually caused by staph or strep bacteria that find their way into the skin. “Cellulitis can begin with a mild trauma to the skin, but pain that is out of proportion with what you see on the outside of the skin requires urgent medical attention,” said Dr. Altman. “We check to make sure it’s not MRSA or another bacteria that may be resistant to antibiotics. Neomycin/bacitracin containing products and similar products are not effective against cellulitis.”

LONDON – Britain will begin the formal process of leaving the European Union by the end of March, Prime Minister Theresa May said Sunday, seeking to ease concern about the nation’s future and the threat of reduced foreign investment and the weakening of the economy.

Members of the ruling Conservative Party applauded wildly as May said the British people had made it clear that they wanted a clear date for exiting the EU and that she was going to deliver.

European leaders and company executives have pushed the government to say when it plans to trigger Article 50 of the EU treaty, starting talks on the U.K.’s departure, so they can begin preparing for a post-EU Britain.

“We will invoke it when we are ready, and we will be ready soon,” she said. “We will invoke Article 50 no later than the end of March next year.”

While the prime minister had previously hinted that she planned to initiate Britain’s exit early next year, many observers had speculated she would wait until the conclusion of France’s presidential election in May or perhaps even the German elections in late summer or

fall of next year. But basking in the glow of party acolytes, a beaming May sounded as if she had campaigned for Britain to leave the EU all along – even though she had opposed that outcome before the June 23 referendum. In what sounded like a stump speech for “leave,” she hit on the emotive issues of sovereignty, immigration and world status.

She insisted there would be no unnecessary delays in bringing Brexit to pass – and that Britain would fight any legal challenges intended to derail the move. She sternly rejected the idea that the government would circumvent the result, making a face as she commented on those still fighting to stay.

Analysts said the deadline for starting the talks was welcome, but businesses still need more detail about what Brexit will mean for trade and immigration. While Britain seeks to control immigration from the EU, free movement of labor is a founding principle of the bloc. Don’t like the EPA’s power plan? Tell it to Congress The legal challenge against the Obama administration’s Clean Power Plan names the Environmental Protection Agency as the defendant. But make no mistake: It’s Congress that’s on trial. And it’s Congress’ inaction that should ultimately compel the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit to rule in the EPA’s favor.

Opponents of EPA’s regulations, which aim to cut carbon emissions from electric-power plants 32 percent below 2005 levels, are right about this much: This is a deeply imperfect policy. It relies on a novel application of the Clean Air Act, written well before the dangers of global warming were fully understood. And it can’t easily be updated to reflect changes on the ground, such as the faster-than-expected decline of coal.

But Congress left the Obama administration no choice. The only way to avert potentially disastrous climate change is to lower emissions as soon as possible. Congress’ refusal since 2010 to consider any climate policy at all forced the EPA to look for alternatives.

The 27 states suing to block the rules argued in court on Tuesday that the EPA is overstepping its authority in forcing them to restructure their power portfolios. But EPA has a legal responsibility to act. In 2007, the Supreme Court ordered it to consider carbon dioxide a pollutant, subject to regulation under the Clean Air Act. The Clean Power Plan is the agency’s attempt – however balky and flawed – to carry out that order.

A far simpler and more effective way to cut emissions would be for Congress to impose a tax on carbon. That would ensure that all fuels are priced to account for their effect on the atmosphere, and let markets find the most efficient ways to lower emissions. It also would create enough revenue to allow other taxes to be cut.

Until Congress acts, however, the EPA is obligated to use what tools are available. Opponents are right to say the Clean Power Plan is cumbersome, but they’re complaining to the wrong people.

Turnout is central to whether Pennsylvania will be close or not. In 2012, the nonwhite vote, which went overwhelmingly for Obama over Mitt Romney, was 21 percent of the electorate. In 2014, when there was no presidential contest, it fell to 18 percent. That’s why low turnout favors Republicans.

College-educated whites, who are trending toward Clinton, were almost half of the Pennsylvania electorate in 2012 but less than 40 percent two years ago. The percentage of young voters also declined.

Democrats hope rallies such as Biden’s and the Obamas’ will help them achieve a turnout close to 2012 levels.

At Drexel on Tuesday, several students who said they were considering staying home in November or voting for the Libertarian Party candidate, Gary Johnson, said the debate pushed them into the Clinton camp.

“I’ve never seen someone as bad as Trump,” declared Will Ashman, a 19-yearold sophomore. Nick Daroshekski of New Jersey and Natalie Blair of California said they were persuaded at the event to register to vote in Pennsylvania instead of in their home states, where Clinton is a shoo-in.

Biden hammered away at Trump’s debate performance, noting the New York billionaire seemed proud he hadn’t paid taxes and had profited from the mortgage crisis. That showed, Biden told the Drexel audience, that Trump lacked a conservative “moral center” like President Ronald Reagan’s.

If this message helps capture the state’s 20 electoral votes it is, in Biden’s phrase, a big deal. Then even if the Republican wins Florida and Ohio it will be difficult for him to get the 270 electoral votes necessary for victory. That’s a firewall.

For Hillary Clinton, Pennsylvania is a fail-safe state. If she wins there, Donald Trump’s path to electoral victory becomes much harder. Her debate performance on Monday night brightened what Democrats believe already were good odds.

That was evident Tuesday when Vice President Joe Biden highlighted a get-outthe-vote rally at Drexel University in Philadelphia. He brought up the debate often, praising Clinton and flaying Trump to an enthusiastic crowd.

Democrats have worried about how to motivate young voters, so they were relieved some Drexel students said the debate made them more likely to vote for Clinton.

Black voters also came on board, according to Dwight Evans, a veteran Democratic state legislator favored to win a Congressional seat in November in a mostly black Philadelphia district.

“When Trump demeans Barack Obama with the crazy birther issues and others it makes people mad,” Evans said.

The Republican nominee repeatedly criticized the Obama presidency at the debate and refused to take responsibility for spreading the lie Obama wasn’t really born in the U.S. Still, Democrats aren’t taking Pennsylvania for granted. Michelle Obama visited Philadelphia on Wednesday with a stop at LaSalle University. Biden’s visit was his third in the past two months, and more are planned. Obama campaigned for Clinton in Philadelphia on Sept. 13.

Clinton already has been to the Keystone State four times since the Democratic convention in July (which was also in Philadelphia), and has toured the state by bus. Her running mate, Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia, has hit four medium-sized Pennsylvania cities. His wife, Ann Holton, has visited once. Bill and Chelsea Clinton have shown up multiple times.

In contrast to tight contests in Florida or Ohio, Democrats are confident Clinton will win Pennsylvania despite a few polls showing the race narrowing. A recent private Democratic poll showed her still with an eight-point lead.

Republicans still think Trump can win Pennsylvania, although the party has lost the last six presidential elections in the state. They are calculating a heavily negative campaign will discourage voters from turning out in Philadelphia and its heavily populated suburbs, where Democrats do

Psoriasis not confined to the skin Dear Dr. K: My doctor thinks my arthritis and heart disease are connected to my psoriasis. Is this possible? I thought psoriasis was a skin condition.

Dear Reader: Psoriasis (pronounced so-RYEuh-sis) is named for an ancient Greek word meaning an itchy or scaly condition. It is classified as a skin disease, but psoriasis is the result of an immune system abnormality that can cause problems throughout the body.

With psoriasis, white blood cells of the immune system become overactive. They produce excess amounts of chemicals that trigger inflammation. The inflammation leads to abnormally rapid growth of cells in the skin’s outer layer. This causes plaques: raised, red patches covered with silvery scales on the elbows and knees – the classic sign of psoriasis.

But the effects of psoriasis are not always confined to the skin. The disease also can cause inflammation throughout the body.

This probably is the reason people with psoriasis have higher rates of various diseases that also are associated with a constant state of inflammation. These include diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and several types of cancer.

Nearly one-third of people with psoriasis develop psoriatic arthritis, which causes stiff, painful joints and other symptoms.

Several eye problems are more common with psoriasis, including conjunctivitis, blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids) and damage to the cornea.

When psoriasis involves only the skin, it often can be treated just by medicines applied to the skin. Very mild cases of psoriasis may improve with moisturizers and some sunlight.

But most people need other treatments: Ointments, gels or lotions. The most common are corticosteroids, which come in varying strengths. They quickly reduce in-

Phototherapy. This treatment uses carefully controlled exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, which helps slow the growth of skin cells. UV light combined with medicines called psoralens often is more potent than just UV light (a treatment called PUVA).

Systemic theray. If your psoriasis has caused more than skin problems, this can have implications for the kind of treatment your doctor may recommend. Treatments that fight inflammation in multiple parts of the body may be required. Medicines that do this include methotrexate, retinoids and cyclosporine.

Research in recent years has led to biologic agents that directly neutralize some of the body’s chemicals (called cytokines) that cause inflammation. They have proved very effective in severe psoriasis. Though they carry a risk of serious side effects, the benefits generally are greater than the risks.

Exercise and weight loss, which help fight inflammation, may help. Adopting other healthy lifestyle choices, such as avoiding tobacco and eating well, can help prevent health problems linked to psoriasis.

We speak in passing when time permits, but she never has invited me to lunch with her or suggested any interaction outside the job.

About three months ago, Betty Jo mentioned she and her husband were planning a renewal of wedding vows and said she was going to invite me. In my mailbox at work, I found a poorly photocopied version of a formal invitation, with the following handwritten at the top in large block letters: “CASH GIFTS ARE CHEERFULLY ACCEPTED!” I did not plan on attending, since I felt if Betty Jo really wanted me, she could have at least sent me an original invitation to my home.

Two weeks ago, while knitting during my lunch break, Betty Jo came up to me and asked about the item I was working on. She then informed me since I hadn’t yet given her a gift, I could complete my knitting project and give that to her. Abby, I was flabbergasted. It’s a custom-designed angora sweater, a gift for a cherished friend.

I mumbled something about being “busy as a bee” with projects to complete, and since that day I have gone out of my way to avoid any contact with Betty Jo. I’ve even managed to find an office with a door that locks in which to take my breaks.

South starts with only five top tricks: three spades, one diamond and one club. He must play on both hearts and clubs before he has nine winners. The danger, of course, is that the opponents will first take too many tricks in diamonds, hearts and clubs. What is the diamond situation?

If the suit is 4-3, South needs the club finesse to work. But if they are 5-2, what does East hold?

It must be honor-doubleton. West would have led the king with all three honors. So, declarer’s first step is to win trick one with dummy’s ace to block the suit. Then what?

It looks tempting to turn to hearts, but here that is fatal. East wins, cashes the diamond queen, and shifts to clubs. West gets in with his king and takes three diamond tricks -- down one.

Instead, South should take the club finesse first. Yes, it loses, and West can continue with a low diamond, but he has no entry left. (If he also has the heart ace, declarer probably had no chance.)

Johnsburg graduate C.J. Fiedorowicz caught his third NFL touchdown on a 14-yard pass in the first quarter of the Houston Texans’ home game against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

Fiedorowicz caught the pass above two Titans defenders while diving in the back of the end zone to give the Texans an early 7-0 lead. He left the game later in the first half, with four catches for 48 yards, with a knee injury and was marked as questionable to return.

He did play in the second half and was relieved the injury wasn’t serious, according to the Houston Chronicle.

“At the time, I was hurting pretty good,” Fiedorowicz told the Chronicle. “The guy fell on the outside of my knee. Whenever that happens it’s not fun. I knew I would get back in there once I got it loosened up.”

He entered the game with two catches for seven yards on the season.

His first NFL TD came on a halfback pass from Arian Foster as a rookie, and last season he caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from QB Brian Hoyer, now with the Bears.

Bears’ offense shines But unit still has a lot of room for improvement

The Bears needed a win in the very worst way to avoid losing the interest of their fan base for the season, to stay relevant in the NFL with 12 games still to play, and, most of all, for themselves.

The question now is beyond giving the players and coaches a chance to enjoy their first taste of victory together. How much can we really read into Sunday’s 17-14 victory over the lowly Detroit Lions?

Let’s go with the glass half-full first.

Regardless of the opponent, when a rookie in his first start produces the way Jordan Howard did – 23 carries for 111 yards, averaging 4.8 yards a carry – you have to take notice.

Coach John Fox talked about what his performance meant to the team.

“Obviously, he has a positive impact,”

Veteran receiver Eddie Royal was just as critical as Howard to the Bears breaking into the win column, catching all seven passes he was targeted with for 111 yards, a 15.9-yard average and a long of 64 that set up the Bears’ second touchdown.

After the game, Royal preferred not to take all the credit.

“I got outside leverage and it was a two-high look by the safeties, so the middle was wide open,” he said. “(Brian) Hoyer made a great throw. Next time, I’ll try not to get caught.”

Sustaining drives: Entering Sunday with the worst time of possession in the league, the Bears held the ball for 33:14, more than six minutes longer than the Lions. The Bears were balanced, with Howard rushing for 4.8 yards a carry and quarterback Brian Hoyer completing 77.8 percent of his passes, helping keep drives alive.

Third-down defense: The Lions were 4 for 12 on third down and 1 for 7 in the first half. The Bears’ DBs had tight coverage on Matthew Stafford’s receivers, making things difficult for the Lions to convert.

Pass coverage: The Bears picked off Stafford twice and sent him to his lowest passer rating since Week 5 of last season (56.8). Coverage was tight throughout the game, including CB Tracy Porter’s job on WR Marvin Jones before he left the game, and the open-field tackling that kept WR Anquan Boldin to only 31 yards on six catches.

Glenn’s pick: Having just entered the game for Porter, CB Jacoby Glenn read Stafford’s eyes on a third-and-one late in the first half. Glenn got the interception on the Lions’ miscommunication, keeping Detroit off the board.

Timu’s tackle: When the Lions had third-and-goal from the Bears’ 1-yard line to open the second half, LB John Timu was ready. Promoted from the practice squad this week, Timu timed the snap and shot his gap to the backfield to bring down RB Zach Zenner for a loss on the play, holding Detroit to a field goal.

Royal’s catch and run: Facing a third-and-11 on the next drive, Hoyer had plenty of time to find Royal, who got open in the middle of the field and ran 64 yards. That set up TE Zach Miller’s touchdown, which put the Bears up eight.

Pass rush: DE Akiem Hicks and DL Cornelius Washington each had crucial sacks, but those were the only two QB hits for the Bears the entire game. Stafford was forced out of the pocket often, so the rush wasn’t completely ineffective, but the Bears still have to generate more pressure with their front.

First-half scoring: Despite 15 first downs and 230 yards of offense, the Bears had only seven points at halftime, thanks to a couple stalled drives in Lions territory and a missed Connor Barth field goal. The game was closer than it should have been.

Penalties: The Bears entered Sunday with 17 penalties and they racked up eight on the afternoon for 55 yards. Granted, the Lions were worse with 10 flags, but the Bears’ penalties came at inopportune times.

D-line backups make big plays

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com CHICAGO – Last week, John Timu was on the Bears’ practice squad. On third-and-goal in the third quarter from the 1-yard line, he was on the field making the play of his young NFL career.

Timu timed the snap perfectly to bring down running back Zach Zenner for a loss, forcing the Lions to kick a field goal.

“My key was having depth, and the timing was perfect and finding the indicator to when he was about to snap the ball,” Timu said after the 17-14 win, the Bears’ first of 2016. “I saw the indicator when he was about to snap it and went from there.”

The undrafted player out of Washington who showed up for the Bears’ run defense late in 2015 joked that the exact thing that tipped him off about the snap was “classified information,” but credited defensive coordinator Vic

“That’s Vic, that’s [Freeman] getting us right, guys with experience telling us certain keys and tendencies so we can time blitzes and so we know our coverages,” he said.

The play was one of several key

stops for a Bears defense that kept a high-powered Lions offense out of the end zone Sunday. Timu, playing inside linebacker in the base package for injured starter Danny Trevathan, described the significance of his play.

“It was awesome. We needed it,” he said. “We came out of halftime saying we needed to make a big play, and this series right here is huge for us. It’ll determine what happens for us in the second half. We just told ourselves, let’s get off the field and we’ll go from there.”

Timu has always impressed the Bears’ coaches with his instincts, and his co-starter at linebacker noticed, too.

“I trust him when he lines up,” Freeman said. “I call him Shooter McGavin because he knows what to do and he’s going to shoot it, he’s going to shoot it faster than I will sometimes. He’s one of the smartest guys on the team.”

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com CHICAGO – Bryce Callahan said he joked with Tracy Porter about vast difference in experience between the Bears’ four young corners and their veteran leader.

In Sunday’s 17-14 win over the Lions, those players came up big for a secondary that flummoxed quarterback Matthew Stafford and Detroit’s high-powered passing game.

“It was fun, these are the guys that I came in with,” said Callahan, who started on the outside. “I was telling Tracy that if you were to add up all our DBs, that would have equaled his exBryce Callahan perience, so it was kind of funny that we were all out there.”

It’s not even that close. Callahan, Jacoby Glenn, Deiondre’ Hall and Cre’Von LeBlanc have combined to play in 23 NFL games.

Sunday was Porter’s 86th NFL contest.

“I’ve been seeing what I’ve been telling you guys all along,” Porter said. “We have a young group, but their age in this league don’t mean anything to me. They are guys that can play this game. They believe in themselves. I believe in them. The coaches believe in them. They come in with confi-

dence, and if you have confidence, that’s the biggest key you can have with this position.”

Porter left the game before halftime with pain in his knee. Glenn replaced Porter and picked off a Stafford pass in the red zone to keep the Lions off the board.

“I just read the quarterback’s eyes, I saw him throw the ball, I just broke and caught the ball,” he said. “It felt great after that.”

Late in the game, the rookie Hall sealed things with an interception of his own.

Callahan’s coverage of Golden Tate helped limit the Lions wideout to one catch on four targets. The Bears’ most experienced corner when Porter was out also made two key open-field tackles, including one on Anquan Boldin late in the game for no gain.

Add in LeBlanc, who played slot corner in his second NFL game, and a youthful group of cover players gained a lot of confidence, holding Stafford to 216 yards, no touchdowns and a passer rating of 56.8, his worst in 15 games. It’s good timing, too, with three good passing offenses coming up on the schedule in Indianapolis, Jacksonville and Green Bay. “I have the utmost confidence in every guy that plays defensive back on our roster,” said Porter, “from starter to the practice squad guys.”

The second-longest tenured Bear on defense, Washington himself made a key play, sacking Matthew Stafford in the fourth quarter, his first QB takedown since 2014.

“It wasn’t a great rush, it just kind of worked out for me,” Washington said with a laugh. “Got off the ball pretty good, shocked the guard and was stumbling, bumbling for a minute and caught my composure and went in and got the sack. It ended up being a good play, but for me, at the beginning of it, it was going to be a disaster.”

Next to Washington, third-year nose tackle Will Sutton, who is starting for Eddie Goldman, helped a Bears run defense that held Detroit to 66 yards rushing. He had two tackles for no gain.

“I had one where I split a double-team and I had a no gain,” Sutton said. “I just felt like we wanted it more.

Katrenick, a third-year varsity starter, is taking a full load this semester to finish early. He committed in to the Mid-American Conference school in April.

“I knew [leaving early] was something I wanted to do regardless of where I went,” Katrenick said. “I’ll be able to learn the offense. They have a fifth-year senior starting now. They made it clear it needed to be something I wanted to do, and it is.”

Katrenick talked with former Marian Central quarterback Chris Streveler, who finished in the middle of his senior year and attended Minnesota, about leaving early.

Young cats: Crystal Lake Central has extremely slim playoff hopes with a 2-4 record after its fourth consecutive loss Friday. But Tigers fans can take heart in playing with a lineup full of juniors.

“We’re starting 16 juniors and a sophomore,” Tigers coach Jon McLaughlin said. “They’re learning what it takes to turn the corner. They show flashes all the time of being able to do it, but we’re not real football-smart at times.”

Central would have to beat Huntley, Dundee-Crown and Cary-Grove to make the playoffs.

Johnsburg senior linebacker Bryce Smith was supposed to play an integral role for the defense on one of the Skyhawks’ best teams in school history.

Smith suffered a torn left ACL in Week 2 at Rochelle, but tried to play with a brace supporting the joint in Friday’s 56-0 win against Woodstock North. Smith, a third-year varsity starter, played one series, hoping his leg could hold up, but had to leave after that.

“It felt unstable and shifted,” Skyhawks coach Dan DeBoeuf said. “He will not attempt to play again. He wanted to at least try and play with it.”

Because Smith had not yet had surgery, he was not risking further injury. It was a matter of whether the knee would hold up and he could withstand the pain. Smith was seen crying on the sideline after he left the game.

“It breaks our hearts,” DeBoeuf said.

Johnsburg’s defense has pitched four consecutive shutouts without Smith, and the Skyhawks, ranked No. 4 in The Associated Press Class 4A poll, seem destined to pick up the No. 1 seed in the northern half of that class when the playoff pairings are announced Oct. 22.

Robust flavor: Jacobs guard Jimmy Wormsley was excited that the Golden Eagles changed their offensive philosophy to a pounding running game.

Jacobs coach Bill Mitz opted to make the change to their “Robust” package heading into Friday’s game against Crystal Lake Central.

Jacobs responded with a 29-point second half and a 43-14 victory to move to 3-3 and remain in contention for a playoff spot. Mitz cited the growth of a young offensive line, with Wormsley, fellow juniors Dylan DeMuth and Cade Purifoye, sophomore Cade Portell and senior Kyle Vega, as a reason for the switch.

Jacobs ran with two tight ends and three backs for most of the game.

It means fewer opportunities for quarterback Chris Katrenick, who is headed to Bowling Green, to throw, but he does not mind.

“We won, I love that,” said Katrenick, who had two touchdown passes among his five completions. “Any way we can win, I’m down for it. I had fun out there.”

In the fourth quarter, Jacobs defensive lineman Brandon Ceisel hit Staples hard after he had just released a pass and landed on top of him. Staples did not return from that hit.

McLaughlin said Staples was doing better Saturday morning at the team’s meeting. He said the junior will be checked further Monday regarding his chances to play next week.

Keegan returns: Crystal Lake South sophomore lineman Trevor Keegan returned to action Friday after missing a week because of a concussion suffered in Week 4 against Prairie Ridge. Gators quarterback Luke Nolan was happy to see the 6-foot-6, 290-pound tackle back on the offensive line for South’s 45-20 victory over Hampshire.

“It’s nice, it’s really good,” Nolan said. “Last week was a little tough on the left side, because Trevor’s always been starting there, so it was a new position for a lot of guys trying to rotate in there. So it was big to have him back.”

Gators coach Chuck Ahsmann agreed, but still had to do some shuffling on the line because of a different injury.

“It’s big. Unfortunately, we lost Connor Buckner, so we traded a guard for a tackle this week. But [Keegan] is a dominating blocker, so it’s huge to have that,” Ahsmann said. “We’d really like to have everybody back, but Max Klinsky stepped up and did a great job for Connor.”

Honoring Ellett: Hampshire had a special guest as its honorary captain for the coin toss Friday against South, former coach Ron Ellett, who led the Whip-Purs to Class 1A state championships in 1976 and 1979.

Ellett, who lives in Arizona, attended the game with several members of the 1976 team, who were taking pictures with their old trophies and letter jackets. Ellett was 124-68-3 in 21 seasons as the Whips’ coach.

Tough road: Hampshire (3-3) needs two wins in its final three games against Prairie Ridge, McHenry and Jacobs to reach the playoffs for the third time in four seasons.

“We’re still 3-3; we still have our goals in front of us,” Whips coach Mike Brasile said. “We’ve got a tough week coming up with PR. They’re a quality team, and we’ll have to play the best game we’ve played in order to go up there and upset those guys. We’re going to live in the present, continue to work every single day. That’s what we’ve got to do this week.”

Americans win back Ryder Cup

CHASKA, Minn. – Patrick Reed shook his fists with fury for every big putt he made.

Sale, as fiery as Ventura is controlled, got into it most recently when he tore up the team’s throwback uniforms he objected to wearing. Sale, suspended by the team for subordination, later said Ventura needed to stand up more for his players in such instances.

“What did we have, a couple things that made it in the news?” Sale asked.

“That doesn’t mean I don’t like him or he didn’t like me. We always had the same goal, the same vision. The same passion.

“Things happen, but that doesn’t change what I think of him personally.

He’s as good as they get.”

The bottom line is the Sox didn’t win for too long under Ventura, who quite arguably did not have the talent to manage a winner.

“It didn’t work out the way that any of us would have wanted,” pitching coach Don Cooper said. “It’s the way things go.

Somebody pays the price, and it’s a good guy paying the price. It’s sad.”

Through translator Billy Russo, Jose Abreu called Ventura “a nice guy and [one who] has all my respect as a person and as a manager.”

Ventura, a surprise hire with no experience before the Sox tabbed him before the 2012 season, said he has no plans to stay in the organization, or to manage again.

“You never say never. But right now, no,” he said.

After 103 wins, Cub ready for playoffs

CINCINNATI – If you ask Anthony Rizzo what stands out to him during an All-Star season that could include a Gold Glove, maybe even an MVP award, along with 103 victories, you get a blank stare.

“I don’t know. I’m not there yet,” he said. “I’m focused on the next month.”

Maybe that stare isn’t so much blank as a fixed gaze on the horizon.

Seven months and 13 days after they began to “Embrace the Target” in spring training, the Cubs on Sunday closed out their best regular season in more than a century – but have their focus on that other century-plus gap in the franchise.

Along the route to the best record in the majors and the favorite’s role heading into the postseason, they overcame the season-ending knee injury of last year’s slugging young playoff hero (Kyle Schwarber) the first of the season, Twit-

ter attacks on ownership by presidential nominee/loose cannon Donald Trump, a three-week skid into the All-Star break when their pitching slumped en masse, an AWOL bench player in August and even a few days of clubhouse friction down the stretch from stir-crazy players grousing over the manager’s “spring training” methods for playoff prep.

For all those moments, the season otherwise went according to script, and, if anything, exceeded expectations for health and consistent performance.

When they fought to earn a wild-card berth last year, the Cubs could point at a four-game sweep of playoff-hopeful San Francisco in early August as the defining moment of that season.

“This year it’s more of an amalgam of work,” said manager Joe Maddon, who added the Cubs’ 22-6 August might have been his chosen moment of the season.

Whatever it is, the Cubs arrive now at their Oct. 7 date with a playoff opener,

healthy and taking into the postseason the best starting rotation in baseball, including Cy Young candidates Jon Lester and Kyle Hendricks; the best group of fielders in the majors in run prevention and MVP favorites in the middle of the order in Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo.

“Of course, anything can happen in the playoffs, especially a short series,” said one longtime scout following the playoff teams. “But they’re the best team in the field.”

And they know how good they are.

“Just look around the clubhouse and the character of the people and the players that we have,” Arrieta said after the Cubs’ win Sunday gave them 200 wins in two seasons. “If we hold each other accountable, that’s the kind of regular seasons we can have as a unit if we stay healthy.

“Yeah, 200 wins in two seasons is no easy feat, but after we win a ring, we’d lie to make it three seasons of 100.”

CHICAGO – Robin Ventura made it official Sunday, confirming he has managed his final game as manager of the White Sox after the team’s season-ending 6-3 loss to the Minnesota Twins at U.S. Cellular Field.

“I’m not going to be back as manager,’’ Ventura said after the Sox completed their fourth Robin Ventura consecutive losing season under his watch. “It’s the right time.”

Ventura, in the final year of his contract, said he let general manager Rick Hahn know weeks ago that this should be the end. He called the decision “mutual.”

“I enjoy this place, love this place,” Ventura said. “It probably needs a new voice, and I have to be big enough to understand that and voice that.”

An All-Star third baseman and fan favorite as a Sox player, Ventura guided the Sox to an 85-77 record and second-place finish in his first season,

2012, finishing third in the American League manager of the year voting. But his popularity waned when the club lost 99 games and finished in last place in the AL Central the next season, and it has not been a factor in the division since, finishing fourth the past three years. The Sox’s record improved each year since 2013, to 78-84 this year, but Ventura’s career record of 375-435 is the worst of any Sox manager lasting more than three seasons.

“Talking to Rick through September, you just realize right now is the time to do it and you need somebody else,” Ventura said.

The Sox are expected to replace Ventura with bench coach Rick Renteria, who managed the Rick Renteria Cubs to a 73-89 record during a rebuilding year in 2014. Ventura’s contract expired after this season. Hahn is holding a news conference at 11 a.m. Monday at U.S. Cellular Field, likely to announce the hiring. Renteria stayed clear of media Sunday.

Ventura, respected by players and others in the organization for his character and even-keeled demeanor, was steady to the end during his last postgame news conference, although his voice cracked slightly.
