Consider running for local office Complaining about the way things are is easy.

Taxes are too high. The roads are too congested. The football bleachers are too tall.

Putting yourself out there and doing something about it – say, by running for elected office – is hard.

As a story by senior reporter Kevin Craver on page 4 details, Tuesday is the first day that local residents can begin gathering the needed signatures to file for local offices in next April’s Consolidated Municipal Election.

I know, I know. There’s an election in November, a contentious one that many are tired of hearing about. Why would I be writing about an election that’s seven months away?

Because the offices on the ballot in April – mayors and village presidents, city councils and village boards, school boards, park districts, library districts and more – are the ones that have the most direct impact on our lives, and we could use more quality candidates running and sharing their ideas about how to make our

UNITED NATIONS – The issue of what to do about the world’s 65.3 million displaced people takes center stage at the United Nations General Assembly Monday when leaders from around the globe converge on New York for the first-ever summit on Addressing Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants.

“It’s very interesting, because if we are able to translate that paper into a response in which many actors are going to participate, we will solve a lot of problems in emergency responses and in longterm refugee situations like the Syrian situation,” Fillipo Grandi, the U.N.’s High Commissioner for Refugees, told The Associated Press.

That may prove an uphill struggle, however, as the document is not legally binding and comes at a time that refugees and migrants have become a divisive issue in Europe and the United States.

Cary-Grove High School freshman started band to benefit children’s hospital

hprokop@shawmedia.com CARY – After Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago saved his life, Cary-Grove High School freshman Matthew Jazwinski is giving back through his gift of music.

The 14-year-old started the band Pulsebeat in January 2014 when the hospital asked him to play bass at the Chicago Dance Marathon. Not wanting to play alone, Matthew gathered a singer, guitarists, keyboard player and drummer he knew through music programs to join him.

“We expected it to not even go past the first gig,” Matthew said.

More than two years later, the band has played shows at the Chicago Dance Marathon, college dance marathons and other events benefiting the hospital, including opening for Gavin DeGraw, Colbie Caillat and Ben Rector for Eric and Kathy’s Concert for the Kids hosted by 101.9fm the Mix radio.

The band donates its time to play at events that raise money for the hospital, all while being high school students.

“These kids could be sitting around playing video games or getting into trouble, and they’re not,” Matthew’s mother, Tamara Jazwinski said. “And they’re like little superheroes because they go to these events and really make an impact on what goes on.”

Tamara Jazwinski said more than $5 million has been raised combined at all of the events the band has played at.

Matthew, who was born with a heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot, has had four surgeries since he was born and uses a pacemaker.

Gregory Webster, an attending physician at Lurie Children’s Hospital, has been Matt’s doctor for about six years, and said the band has been amazing at helping bring awareness to the hospital.

“I think the dance marathon is a great example of bringing the message to a lot of people at once,” Webster said.

“And the way that we provide care for people is not only by bringing patients in and taking care of patients one by one, but also inspiring a big number of people … to be part of health care and be active and try to discover new treatments for the future.”

Nonpartisan candidates for April 2017 election can start collecting signatures Tuesday

So here’s your trigger warning – if you don’t want to think about two elections when you can barely handle one, read no further. However, if you do want to run for any of the plethora of nonpartisan offices up in the April 4 consolidated election, the time is coming to pull candidate petitions.

The U.N. summit has been sabotaged by states acting in self-interest, leaving millions of refugees in dire situations around the world on the edge of a precipice,” Amnesty International Secretary General Salil Shetty said in a statement.

Shetty said the agreement merely kicks the can down the road by calling for separate global compacts for refugees and migrants to be adopted within two years.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, whose report on refugees and migrants laid the basis for the summit document, said he was aware of the criticism from non-governmental groups.

“While we all wish it could be a stronger outcome document ... all 193 member states had to agree on their commitment. As you will see, my report was a strong one,” Ban said. “I hope that, as the two compacts are adopted over the coming year-and-a-half, some stronger language and commitment and elements from the report will reappear in the course of this negotiation.”

More concrete progress is expected at a follow-up summit on Tuesday called by President Barack Obama, where at least 45 countries are expected to make pledges that are in line with U.S. goals of increasing humanitarian

dates can circulate petitions for nonpartisan offices for municipal government; school, park, community college, fire and library districts; and community college boards, regional school boards and the Fox Waterway Agency. The filing period will take place between Dec. 12 and Dec. 19 at the respective government offices, which is also where petition packets may be picked up.

Local governments also will have the opportunity if they wish to put binding and advisory referendums on the ballot.

If enough candidates file for a particular office to require the need for a primary,

they will be held Feb. 28.

Also up for election April 4 are all township offices, which are partisan. Township central committees have until mid-November to determine whether to hold a primary election rather than a party caucus. The respective central committees of Algonquin, Nunda and Grafton townships already have opted to hold primaries.

Nonpartisan elections in recent years have had problems with declining turnout and a lack of candidates. Only one voter in 10 participated in the 2015 election, and a number of races in 2013 and 2015 were decided by one vote.

According to the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, an “unprecedented” 65.3 million people were displaced at the end of 2015, an increase of more than 5 million from a year earlier. They include 21.3 million refugees, 3.2 million asylum-seekers, and 40.8 million migrants.

According to the U.N. Refugee Agency, refugees are people forced to flee because of armed conflict or persecution, while migrants chose to move in search of a better life.

First National Bank awards Harvard Economic Development Corporation

bkeeperman@shawmedia.com HARVARD – The city’s economic development corporation will be able to do more to spur job growth with a new grant award from First National Bank.

First National Bank has awarded the Harvard Economic Development Corporation with a $10,000 grant for its work toward the Woodstock-Harvard Enterprise Zone, which took effect this year and has so far spurred six projects, including three in Harvard such as the $27 million expansion of dog treat company Pedigree Ovens.

“While the enterprise zone was just part of the incentives we were able to offer, I believe it was essential to have the zone to keep the company in Harvard,” said Charles Eldredge, executive director of the Harvard EDC. First National Bank also gave the corporation a grant toward the cost of

The corporation operates on an annual budget of about $55,000, so the $10,000 will go a long way, Eldredge said.

“Harvard was one of the first movers in the county toward obtaining the enterprise zone, and then the county got on board and Woodstock joined us,” he said. “So the grant will really support the enterprise zone which has so far been doing very well.”

The bank is a charter organization with the corporation and has 14 loca-

tions in Illinois. Its vice president, Michael Morris, also is on the Harvard EDC’s board of directors.

“The Harvard EDC earned the grant due to its relentless work in organizing the Harvard Woodstock Enterprise Zone to help attract new businesses to Harvard and to make our community a better place to live and work,” said Morris. “‘[It’s funded] to support organizations that are helping to create jobs and improve the communities that we serve”

In order to effectively treat your neuropathy three factors must be determined: • What is the underlying cause?

• How much nerve damage has been sustained?

• How much treatment will your condition require?

The charity golf outing, hosted by Jett’s Heating and Air of Crystal Lake, will begin at 10 Sgt. L.J. a.m. at the Boone Creek Marak Golf Course, 6912 Mason Hill Road, Bull Valley.

Donations initially were going to the McHenry Police Department and the McHenry Township Fire Protec-

tion District for new safety equipment.

However, after the death of the former Huntley sergeant, both departments will send the proceeds to Marak’s family.

The cost to participate is $100 a golfer. Included in that price is 18 holes of golf, on-course games, lunch and dinner. There also will be raffles and prizes to win that will open to the public at 3:30 p.m.

“Jett’s is hoping to get around 100 to 120 people signed up,” director of marketing Tiffani Klapperich said. “Right now we are at about 80, so there are plenty of spots still available.”

Born: Jan. 6, 1951; in Cape Girardeau, MO Died: Sept. 15, 2016; in Huntley Terry W. Boley, 65, of Huntley, passed away at his home in Huntley on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016, following a lengthy illness.

He was born Jan. 6, 1951, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, the son of A.B. and Iris B. (Lankford) Boley. He grew up in Chaffee, Missouri, and following his education moved to Woodstock. He was united in marriage to Darlene S. Varney on Aug. 5, 1971. The couple made their home in Huntley for over 30 years and Terry worked as a carpenter in the area for the Carpenters Union Local 2087.

He coached Little League Baseball and later Youth Football through the American Legion in Huntley. He particularly enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing cribbage.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene of Huntley; his sons, Eron (Kim) Boley of Wilmington, North Carolina, and Justin Boley and Jarrett Boley, both of Huntley; his grandchildren, Devon, Hayden (Summer), Ellie, Ethan, Hunter and Logan; and his brothers, Randy Boley and Mark Boley.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

A memorial gathering will be held at 4 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 19, 2016, at the Huntley American Legion.

Marcia Ratcliffe of Crystal Lake was born March 13, 1932, in Farmington, to Charles and Mabel (nee Slack) Bennett, Marcia passed away peacefully at Fair Oaks Nursing Home on Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2016, at the age of 84.

Marcia was united in marriage to Lewis Ratcliffe on Oct. 23, 1955, in Canton. She was employed first as a real estate agent in Crystal Lake, but would retire from Medela Medical Supply.

Marcia loved enjoying her birds and squirrels, her time spent at the land, reading a good book, but mostly she enjoyed the time spent with her family.

In addition to her loving husband, Lewis of 60 years, she will be dearly missed by her children, Debi (Dean) Case, Jeff (Cheryl) and Jerry; her grandchildren, Erin, Kelli, Nicole, Robert, Jon, J’net, Hilary, Holly, Adam and Ian; eight great-grandchildren; former daughters-in-law, Kim and Tina; sister, Donna (Larry) DeGroot; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her nephews, Ronnie and Robbie DeGroot; and her great-grandson, Nicholas Benton.

He was a graduate of Concordia College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Concordia Senior College in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Concordia Theological Seminary in Springfield. He served congregations in Purdy, Washington, Bedford, Indiana, and Crystal Lake for a total of 40 years.

In his retirement, he was visitation pastor at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Elgin.

‘Sound of Music’ actress Charmian Carr dies at 73

LOS ANGELES – Charmian Carr, the actress best known for sweetly portraying the eldest von Trapp daughter in Rogers & Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music,” has died. She was 73.

Carr died Saturday of complications from a rare form of dementia in Los Angeles, Carr’s spokesman, Harlan Boll, said.

At age 21, the actress portrayed Liesl von Trapp in the 1965 film version of the musical “The Sound of Music.” She famously performed the song “Sixteen Going on Seventeen.”

After “The Sound of Music,” Carr’s only other major Hollywood role was starring with Anthony Perkins in the Stephen Sondheim television musical “Evening Primrose.”

She played a mysterious young woman who lived in a department store.

“It’s always sad when a member of the family passes away – and in the case of the ‘family’ of the movie ‘The Sound of Music,’ it’s especially sad when it is the first of the group to go,” said Ted Chapin, president of the Rogers & Hammerstein organization, in a statement. “Charmian Carr played the oldest von Trapp child, and in some ways she maintained that role in real life – guiding, cheering, supporting and generally being there for the rest of her ‘sisters’ and ‘brothers.’ “ 20th Century Fox, the studio that produced the “Sound of Music” film, noted Carr’s death. “The Sound of Music lost a beloved member of the family w/ the passing of Charmian

Carr. She will be forever missed,” the studio said on its Twitter account.

The actress later wrote a pair of books about her “Sound of Music” experiences: “Forever Liesl” and “Letters to Liesl.” She fully embraced audiences’ reverence for the musical, frequently appearing at fan events commemorating the film, including sing-a-long performances at the Hollywood Bowl.

“I tell people that they should consider sing-a-long ‘Sound Of Music’ like going to a therapist,” she told The Associated Press before a 2005 appearance. “It’s just a kind of therapy. They can move around. They can dance and talk back to the screen.

They can skip their appointment with the shrink that week.”

Carr went on to become an interior designer in Southern California.

Her clients included Michael Jackson and “Sound of Music” screenwriter Ernest Lehman.

She was born in Chicago in 1942.

Her mother was a vaudeville actress, and her father was a musician and orchestra leader. Her family moved to the San Fernando Valley when she was a child.

Carr is survived by her four siblings, her two children and four grandchildren. She is also survived by the six other actors who became part of cinematic history when they were cast as the von Trapp children.

“We’re second family,” said Kym Karath, who played the youngest von Trapp, Gretl, in an AP interview last year to commemorate the film’s 50th anniversary. “As adults, we were deeply bonded, so our lives have really interwoven with each other.”

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; sisters and their husbands, Margaret (James McNulty), Dorothy (Darrel West) and Pat (Richard Aston); and former wife, Myra Burrell Robinson.

Bob attended St. Thomas grade school and graduated from Crystal Lake Community High School in 1950. He attended Beloit College after which he served in the U.S. Air Force. As a radar intercept officer, Bob flew in an F94 fighter jet.

Bob established a career in real estate in the 1960s. Starting in sales management, he was a prominent member of several companies that developed the landscape of Crystal Lake during the 1960s and 1970s. His outstanding achievements include President of Sales and Marketing Council for greater Home Builders of Chicago, Algonquin Township Supervisor, McHenry County Board of Supervisors, President of Crystal Lake Park District and a board member of Crystal Lake Bank and Trust. Teaming with David Ladd, Bob established Brittany Builders, developing several custom home communities in McHenry County. He then began his own custom home building company with his son, Rob, Raintree Builders. After retiring from the home building business, Bob sold land and homes with Baird & Warner for 22 years.

Despite his many accomplishments in a career he loved, Bob was perhaps better known for the way he lived his life in the town he loved. His booming voice greeted everyone he met with friendly enthusiasm. On a summer night, you could hear his laughter from Gate 13 when he was at a dinner party across the lake on Woodland Drive. Stories are still told about his annual New Year’s Day parties in the ‘60s and early ‘70s, and the Turkey Bowls held in the ‘80s and ‘90s which gained notoriety throughout Chicagoland. He had an indelible ability to fill a room both in stature and spirit. A diehard Cubs fan since he was a child, Cubs fans across the world now have a guarantee the Cubs will win the World Series in 2016 with Bob sealing the deal with the powers that be.

bkeeperman@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – Teens from Spain had the opportunity to visit Woodstock last week as part of the school district’s dual-language program.

Woodstock students will have the same chance to immerse themselves in another culture in the spring.

Fifteen students and two teachers from Teruel, Spain visited Woodstock as part of an exchange through Woodstock District 200’s dual-language program, which allows students to learn another language and effectively communicate with people from different cultures. The trip was a first-time experience for many stu-

dents.

“It’s like another world,” said student Ines Lanza, 14. “It’s really different. It’s cool. It’s not as difficult as I thought it would be.”

The district’s two-way immersion courses typically have half native English speakers and half native Spanish speakers. The lessons – from social studies to reading to math – are taught in both English and Spanish.

More than 2,300 students from kindergarten to high school are enrolled in the program in the 2016 school year, according to the district.

Foreign exchange programs offer students the ability to not only practice second languages, but experience immersion into a different culture.

‘We have less classes, but they are longer,” she said. “And in Spain, we go home for lunch.”

Woodstock students will have the opportunity to travel to Teruel in the spring and will stay with some host families that sent their own kids to Woodstock.

STATE Illinois schools eliminating zero-tolerance policies

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Illinois schools are required now to limit long-term suspensions and expulsions under a new law that also eliminates the use of zero-tolerance policies used to severely punish students for certain offenses.

The law, which took effect last week, is designed to reduce the number of days that students are pulled from classrooms and encourage school administrators to use suspensions as a last resort.

“So it becomes a school system that says, ‘What can we do to keep this student in an academic setting?’ ” said Sen. Kimberly Lightford, a Chicago Democrat who sponsored the legislation.

Illinois lawmakers passed the bill with overwhelming support last year.

States have been rethinking the zero-tolerance policies that gained prominence following the mass shooting at Colorado’s Columbine High School in 1999.

Colorado and North Carolina eliminated zero-tolerance policies in 2011.

All Chicago patrol officers to wear body cams by 2018

CHICAGO – Chicago police announced Sunday that they will expand the use of body cameras to include all officers on patrol by 2018.

The numbers of body cameras will increase by several thousand within the next two years so every officer on patrol has access to the wallet-size cameras, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said.

Johnson said their use should improve accountability and help build community trust.

The department launched its body-cam pilot program in 2015, and it currently includes seven of 22 city police districts. Expanding it to the other districts will cost around $8 million, money that will come from the depart-

The new Illinois law requires schools to suspend students more than three days only in cases where they pose a threat to the school, and all other disciplinary options – including counseling them or involving them in after-school programs – have been exhausted. The law says schools also will need to explain their rationale for expelling someone.

“I think it’s going to allow some better communication between the parents and the teachers and the staff,” said Joe Burgess, superintendent of the Genoa-Kingston School District.

Jennifer Gill, superintendent of Springfield Public Schools, said the district has spent the last year training and informing teachers, security guards, nurses and other staff in preparation of the law. She said the state gave the schools no additional funding

School suspensions have decreased the last two years, but there still are racial disparities, according to figures from the Illinois State Board of Education.

During the 2015 school year, more than 296,400 students were suspended, down from nearly 340,000 in 2014.

Suspensions longer than 10 days also decreased, from nearly 1,200 in 2014 to just more than 650 in 2015.

Students were suspended for fighting, using drugs and having dangerous weapons, but most were placed in the “other” category, which the school board data do not explain.

Black students are far more likely to be suspended than their peers, a trend that has persisted since 2009, when an Associated Press analysis found that more than half of all children suspended from Illinois public schools were black, even though they represented less than one-fifth of enrollment.

The percentage of black students being suspended has decreased only slightly since 2009. They made up nearly 45 percent of the suspensions in 2014, and just over 47 percent in 2015.

The statue spent a year and a half wrapped in a green protective mesh around scaffolding that was erected in December 2014. The material came down in June.

Autopsies set for 4 found in Rockford home after fire

ROCKFORD – Autopsies are planned in the deaths of four people, including three children, whose bodies were found in a Rockford home destroyed by a weekend fire.

The Rockford Register Star said they Winnebago County Coroner’s Office will complete the autopsies Monday to determine whether the fire or something else caused the deaths.

The coroner’s office said the victims included a 27-year-old, a 9-year-old, a 6-year-old and a 6-month-old.

The newspaper said firefighters responded to the blaze in a single-family home around 5 a.m. Saturday. Fire department officials said the house was already engulfed in flames by the

time they arrived.

2016 Illinois State Fair attendance down; weather cited

SPRINGFIELD – Officials said attendance at the 2016 Illinois State Fair fell by around 13 percent compared with attendance numbers last year.

The State Journal-Register reported that officials blamed flooding in the area, the heat and a power outage for the decline in attendance for the 11-day event in August. Total attendance from Aug. 11 to 21 was more than 357,000. About 411,000-plus attended last year.

At the same time, fair officials said, they are happy that revenue figures were similar to those of previous years.

A report on the state fair numbers indicated that about 7.75 inches of rain fell during the fair, including 5.59 inches on Aug. 12.

Fair Manager Kevin Gordon said staff “battled obstacles at every turn,” including triple-digit heat indices.

FBI investigates stabbings in Minn. as possible terror act

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – A man in a private security uniform stabbed nine people at a Minnesota shopping mall, reportedly asking one victim if he or she was Muslim, before an off-duty police officer shot and killed him in an attack the Islamic State group claimed as its own.

None of the nine people who were stabbed in Saturday night’s attack received life-threatening wounds, St. Cloud police Chief Blair Anderson said. He said it doesn’t appear that anyone else was involved in the attack at the Crossroads Center in St. Cloud, which began at around 8 p.m. and was over within minutes.

At a news conference Sunday, FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Rick Thornton said the attack was being investigated as a possible act of terrorism and that agents still were digging into the attacker’s background and possible motives. Authorities were looking at social media accounts and the attacker’s electronic devices, and talking to his associates, Thornton said.

An Islamic State-run news agency, Rasd, claimed Sunday that the attacker was a “soldier of the Islamic State” who had heeded the group’s calls for attacks in countries that are part of a U.S.-led anti-IS coalition.

It was not immediately clear if the extremist group had planned the attack or even knew about it beforehand. IS has encouraged socalled “lone wolf” attacks. It has also claimed past attacks that are not believed to have been planned by its central leadership.

Authorities didn’t identify the attacker, but the Star Tribune of Minneapolis said the man’s father identified him as Dahir A. Adan, 22. Speaking to the newspaper through an in-

terpreter, Ahmed Adan, whose family is Somali, said his son was born in Africa and had lived in the U.S. for 15 years.

A spokesman for St. Cloud State University confirmed that Adan was a student there, but has not been enrolled since the spring semester. Spokesman Adam Hammer said Adan’s intended major was information systems, which is a computer-related field.

Ahmed Adan said police told him around 9 p.m. Saturday that his son had died at the mall, and that police had raided the family’s apartment, seizing photos and other materials. He said police said nothing to him about the mall attack, and that he had “no suspicion” that his son had been involved in terrorist activity, the newspaper reported.

Anderson said police had had three previous encounters with the attacker, mostly for minor traffic violations.

Anderson said the attacker, dressed in a security uniform and wielding what appeared to be a kitchen knife, began attacking people right after entering the mall, stabbing people in several spots inside the building, including corridors, businesses and common areas.

Five minutes after authorities received the first 911 call, Jason Falconer, a part-time officer in the city of Avon, shot and killed the attacker. Anderson said Falconer fired as the attacker was lunging at him with the knife, and continued to engage him as the attacker got up three times.

“He clearly prevented additional injuries and potential loss of life,” Anderson said. “Officer Falconer was there at the right time and the right place,” he said.

Anderson earlier said the man reportedly made at least one reference to Allah and asked a victim if he or she was Muslim before attacking them.

‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Veep’ take top honors at Emmys

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – “Game of Thrones” conquered the Emmy kingdom Sunday, honored as top drama for the second consecutive year and becoming the most honored prime-time TV series ever on a night of surprises and sharp political jabs.

“Veep” repeated as best comedy series, and its star, Julia-Louis Dreyfus, won a record-breaking sixth Emmy as best comedy actress. Jeffrey Tambor’s trophy as top comedy actor for “Transparent” also was his second.

But the top drama acting trophies were far from predictable: Rami Malek of “Mr. Robot” and Tatiana Maslany of “Orphan Black” were the winners, both overcoming heavyweight competition.

“Oh, my God. Please tell me you’re seeing this, too,” said a stunned Malek, who plays an emotionally troubled engineer caught up in a dangerous hacking conspiracy.

“Games of Thrones,” the fantasy saga based on George R.R. Martin’s novels, received a total of 12 awards Sunday and at last weekend’s technical arts ceremony for a cumulative 38, besting “Frasier” by one to claim most primetime series awards ever.

The Emmys proved more adroit than

the Oscars at recognizing and honoring diversity in Hollywood’s top ranks, with trophies going to minority actors and behind-the-scenes artists including writers Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang of “Master of None.”

But Viola Davis of “How to Get Away with Murder” failed to repeat her 2015 best drama actress win, the first for a woman of color.

Tambor captured his second consecutive best comedy actor trophy for “Transparent,” in which he plays a transgender character.

He called for Hollywood to make him the last non-transgender actor to get such a role.

A shaking Louis-Dreyfus ended her speech by dedicating the trophy to her father, who she said died Friday. Before that, she honed in on GOP contender Donald Trump’s campaign.

“I’d also like to take this opportunity to personally apologize for the current political climate,” she said. “I think that ‘Veep’ has torn down the wall between comedy and politics. Our show started out as a political satire, but it now feels more like a sobering documentary.”

She promised to “rebuild that wall and make Mexico pay for it.”

But an attorney for Tyre’s family has called for an independent investigation, saying the family believes the boy’s involvement in an armed robbery would be “out of character” and the police version of events “might not be true.”

However the facts shake loose in Columbus, the use of replica guns in crime has long vexed law enforcement.

force – deadly or otherwise – on a suspect brandishing an imitation gun.

More recently, Associated Press research found at least 25 deaths involving lookalike guns mistaken by police for actual firearms across the country in the last two decades, dating to the 1994 slaying by a housing police officer of a 13-year-old New York City boy.

“It’s horrible, it’s horrible, when these kids are displaying these firearms and a life is lost, and after the fact it turns out it’s not real,” said Allentown, Pennsylvania, police Capt.

Richard London.

But he added it can be nearly impossible to tell an imitation gun from a firearm that shoots real bullets.

“It’s human nature to defend yourself in the face of that,” he said.

At least 12 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico have laws restricting the sale or use of imitation firearms, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures, while many cities and towns have their own ordinances on lookalike guns.

Federal law requires imitation guns to have orange plugs in the barrel to distinguish them from real firearms, but the tips are easily removed and experts question their effectiveness.

P.S. The study mentioned above noted that its findings only pertained to consuming vitamin C through food sources, not vitamin supplements.

Whether they shoot BBs, pellets, paintballs or nothing at all, imitation guns can be indistinguishable from the real thing – it’s one reason why some criminals gravitate toward them. Plus, they’re cheap and easy to get.

As Ohio authorities investigate the fatal police shooting of a 13-year-old boy who officers said pulled a realistic-looking BB gun from his waistband, law enforcement agencies are grappling with the use of fake guns to commit very real crimes.

“If I can’t go get a real gun, it’s easier for me to waltz into Wal-Mart or whatever store sells these things and go get a replica. Because if I go to a store to hold it up, the guy behind the counter isn’t going to know it’s not real,” said Geoffrey Alpert, a criminal justice professor at the University of South Carolina.

While the federal government does not track criminals’ use of toy or replica guns, some individual police departments say they’ve noticed an uptick.

In Edmonton, Canada, police said imitation guns were involved in 1,598

incidents in 2015 – up 38 percent from a year earlier.

In Arlington, Texas, suspects are increasingly using lookalike guns, including an incident earlier this year in which a man carjacked a woman using an air gun that resembled a real pistol, and another case involving a teen who threatened an officer with a replica gun. The officer managed to knock it out of the teen’s hand and tackle him.

Arlington police Lt. Christopher Cook said that between March and August, nearly 20 percent of the weapons seized by police after they were used in crimes turned out to be lookalikes.

So far, police haven’t had to use deadly force. But Cook said that could change in an instant.

“There’s no training in the world that we know of where an officer can readily distinguish a real gun from a fake gun,” he said. “That’s not realistic, because officers have to make split-second decisions to ascertain whether it’s a firearm or not.”

Answer cyberattack

Less than two months ago, President Barack Obama approved a presidential policy directive spelling out how the federal government would respond to “significant cyber incidents.” In the shadowy world of cyberconflict, this is often a difficult problem: how to identify the source of an attack and respond appropriately. Obama set benchmarks. He defined a significant incident as one that is likely to result in “demonstrable harm” to the national security, economy or foreign relations of the United States, or “to the public confidence, civil liberties, or public health and safety of the American people.”

In recent weeks, according to private security experts and government sources, hackers associated with Russia’s government have carried out high-profile intrusions intended to weaken that public confidence and disrupt the U.S. election campaign.

Obama should do something about it.

The most spectacular act was the hack of the Democratic National Committee on the eve of the party’s convention, in which 20,000 embarrassing internal emails were stolen and then made public through WikiLeaks. The leaked emails showed that DNC staffers leaned against Bernie Sanders; party Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz was forced to quit, and the campaign of Hillary Clinton was damaged, probably as Russia intended. This was followed by an upload this week of internal DNC data such as private phone numbers and email addresses.

And in an assault that seems aimed at besmirching Clinton and sowing discord, hackers obtained and released emails from former secretary of state Colin Powell that maligned her and Republican nominee Donald Trump.

This adds up to a full-blown attempt by Russia to interfere with the U.S. election cycle and weaken public confidence. It probably won’t work – we don’t think Americans are so easily cowed. But it calls for a forceful response. The administration has been hesitating, in part because of fragile negotiations with Moscow over the war in Syria.

Obama ought to put his foot down, and soon. The cyberattacks are of a piece with a larger attempt

by Russian President Vladimir Putin to subvert Western democracies and the ideals of a liberal, rulebased international order.

Obama should order the preparation of economic sanctions against Russian individuals under an executive order he signed that permits sanctions against people linked to malicious cyber-acts. He must put Russia on notice that such disruptive “active measures,” as the KGB once called them, will not be tolerated.

If Putin thinks he can get away with generating fog and doubt, the best answer is to drag him and his dirty tricks into the sunshine.

Alison Green, who runs the Ask a Manager blog, writes in an email: “There’s a correlation between how skilled a position is, and thus how hard it is to fill, and the compensation and perks that a job offers. Employers often think of lower-skill, lower-wage workers are more easily replaceable, and they don’t have the market pressures to offer them paid sick leave that exist in other places in the labor market.

“This set-up is short-sighted. . . . When you treat people better than the market says you have to, you tend to get better workers and longer commitment.”

It’s well-established that fast-food workers, those exemplars of part-time employment and swift workplace turnover, are particularly likely to have to report to work despite illness.

Aside from causing problems for the workers themselves, their presence in the workplace while sick poses serious public health risks.

The Institute for Women’s Policy Research reports that in the course of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, some 8 million infected American workers took no time off; it’s estimated that they, in turn, infected another 7 million people.

Recent years have seen some legal advances, with more than two dozen cities, five states and the District of Columbia passing sick leave laws, but, “what we need to do is pass the Healthy Family Act, that’s the bottom line,” says Debra Ness, president of the National Partnership for Women and Families.

The Healthy Family Act would require businesses with 15 or more employees to let them earn an hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked (up to 56 hours annually); businesses with fewer employees could opt out, but would then be required to provide at least 56 hours of annual unpaid sick leave.

And that would be an enormous improvement - but even if passed, sick leave laws mean little if our culture discourages us from taking advantage of them.

Ness refers to a “fierce, independent work ethic” that characterizes the American approach to our jobs, adding, “we see it all the time, people powering through illness - we just saw a presidential candidate doing it. [Clinton] was doing what many of us do, powering through with pneumonia. ... Sometimes that kind of independent work ethic works against us.” She adds: “A lot times those people have a choice [to take sick days or not] – but they’re the same people who don’t realize that so many people don’t have a choice.”

As Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton demonstrated when she nearly collapsed from the effects of walking pneumonia early this week, the benefits of running for elected office may include many things, but sick days are not among them.

This is perhaps unavoidable in light of the fact that the job of actually being an elected official doesn’t allow for much rest and recuperation, either – see, for instance, John F. Kennedy plowing ahead despite crippling back pain and Addison’s disease, which he wanted to conceal from the public; and George H.W. Bush ignoring a doctor’s advice in 1992 to stay in bed rather than attend a state dinner in Japan, with the result being that he vomited on the Japanese prime minister. “The president is human,” Bush’s physician told reporters at the time. “He gets sick.”

Going to work sick is not just a function of political work, however, or even of merely being human – it is a profoundly American behavior.

In 2014, the public health and safety nonprofit NSF International found that 26 percent of American workers regularly go to work when under the weather, or about 39 million people in today’s labor market. Twenty-five percent of those who do so told NSF that their bosses expected it of them; 37 percent said they couldn’t afford to take the time off. A second 2014 study, conducted by Brian Gifford and Kimberly Jinnett of the Integrated Benefits Institute, arrived at similar findings: Twenty-one percent of people who went to work sick couldn’t afford to miss hours; 23 percent said their workload was too heavy to allow it; 9 percent said they “fear[ed] negative consequences.”

Caitlyn Collins, assistant professor of sociology at Washington University in St. Louis, says these figures reflect a widespread American bias that “valorizes work and the ideal worker image” at the expense of personal health and well-being.

“Our culture is reflected and reinforced by public policy,” Collins says. “We are the only industrialized country with no federally mandated paid sick days. When the federal government tells you that you have no right to sick days, they’re telling you that you have no right to selfcare or to care for loved ones.”

With sick leave decisions left to the marketplace, many employers simply don’t provide it or don’t provide it for all employees. The Bureau for Labor Statistics reports that 32 percent of civilian workers have no access to paid sick leave of any kind, and among part-time civilian workers, that number leaps to 69 percent. If you’re working part-time at minimum wage, even one missed day can mean an unpaid bill, or worse, being fired.

Simple Epley maneuver can relieve symptoms of vertigo Dear Dr. K: I suffer from benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. I’ve heard something called the Epley maneuver may help. Could you explain what this is?

Dear Reader: Vertigo is the sensation that either your body or your environment is moving, usually spinning. Vertigo can be a symptom of many different illnesses and disorders. The type of vertigo you have – benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) – is the most common form. As you’ve probably experienced, simply changing the position of your head can cause a sudden spinning sensation.

Inside the ear are three tiny canals that help us recognize the position of our body in space and maintain balance. Inside the canals are fluid and tiny hairs attached to nerve endings. The way the fluid washes against the hairs changes when your body is in different positions. When the fluid moves the hairs, nerve signals are sent to the brain.

Those signals get translated in a way that lets you know what position your body is in.

BPPV occurs when tiny calcium crystals form in the inner ear and become dislodged.

They bang around the canals and touch the sensitive nerve endings inside. The brain starts to get conflicting signals. You experience this as a sensation of your body moving around in the world (or the world spinning around your body).

If you have BPPV, simply looking up or rolling over in bed can dislodge crystals and cause brief bouts of extreme dizziness.

Vertigo can feel like the room is spinning or as though you are spinning in the room.

It can be just a sense of imbalance, but it also can cause nausea, vomiting and

One treatment for BPPV is the Epley maneuver. In this maneuver, a doctor or physical therapist moves your head and body through a series of positions. You also can learn to do it yourself. You begin by lying on an examination table. The therapist gently moves your head to the left and right, then has you roll over and sit up.

Each position moves the loose crystals through the ear canal, repositioning them to relieve symptoms. Your symptoms may improve in as little as 10 minutes. Your doctor also may provide specific exercises for you to continue at home.

For more persistent vertigo, your doctor may recommend something called balance rehabilitation. The types of exercises prescribed will depend upon what movements provoke your symptoms.

The Epley maneuver and several similar exercises have given relief to many people with BPPV. Before these maneuvers were discovered, the vertigo ultimately would go away on its own, but it could take weeks.

These maneuvers speed the improvement – from weeks to minutes. Unfortunately, attacks of vertigo do often return, but the maneuvers help drive them away.

DEAR ABBY am 32, married for a year and Jeanne a half, with no Phillips children yet. I am an only child who was raised by my mother until I was 14 because my father was in prison. My mother never remarried. She blames me for her never having found anyone, and she is resentful of my marriage. She doesn’t get along with anyone, not family, co-workers or “friends.”

I’m afraid the day I tell her I’m pregnant her response will be laced with disdain and judgment, and I believe she will use my children as pawns like she used me to manipulate my dad.

I have seen a therapist about this, but I’m having a hard time following through on what needs to be done. My therapist suggests I tell Mom how I feel and let her know if she continues with her current behavior, I will have to limit the amount of time we see each other.

Abby, she has said some really hurtful things to me in the past. I know her behavior is wrong, but I continue trying to be the daughter I am supposed to be so we can hopefully have the relationship we are supposed to have. Recently, at a meeting with my boss and several representatives of these organizations, the topic of fairness in the workplace was mentioned.

I was asked what my experience was, and I shared I thought the workplace was fair. I didn’t think about it at the time, but I now realize I was being asked how my experience was as an LGBT person. My boss has nominated me for a diversity award. The problem is I’m a heterosexual female, and I think he promoted me for the honor because he thinks I am gay.

How should I handle this? Do I need to go on record to my boss that I am straight, that I have a boyfriend, and he misunderstood me? I don’t want this to come back to haunt me, but I’m afraid addressing it may ruin my credibility because it has taken so long for me to address it.

My sexual orientation obviously is not something of great interest at work, but I feel I am living a terrible lie, and I don’t know how to fix this. – Ashamed In D.C. Dear Ashamed: No one should feel compelled to disclose one’s sexual orientation at work, no matter the circumstances. That said, in this particular case, go to your boss before this goes any further. Explain to him privately you didn’t realize when the question was asked that anyone would presume you were gay. If you accept the diversity award without clearing the air first, it potentially could be a source of embarrassment and jeopardize your credibility.

West will win with the heart king and return a trump.

Declarer should try to give West the lead, potentially making a trump shift expensive. At trick two, South should lead the club king from his hand. Here, West wins and may switch to a trump, but declarer wins cheaply, gives up another club, and is home. If West wins and leads a second trump, he loses his heart trick.

South will have a guess only if East wins the second club and leads another trump. Did he start with two low (South must win with his ace) or king-third (South must finesse)?

Scary injury for CLS OT Keegan suffers concussion in loss at Prairie Ridge

joestevenson@shawmedia.com The moment is one that Crystal Lake South football coach Chuck Ahsmann recalls experiencing only twice, and not one he cares to go through again.

Gators offensive tackle Trevor Keegan, a 6-foot-6, 290-pound sophomore, was completing a block and falling forward in Friday’s 56-7 loss at Prairie Ridge when he was struck in the head by South running back Michael Swiatly’s knee.

The blow caught Keegan flush and knocked him out.

“In my career, I’ve only seen that twice, you get there and the guy’s completely out,” Ahsmann said. “I sprinted out there like it was one of my own sons. We kind of woke him up and made sure everything was OK.” Amanda Keegan, Trevor’s mother, is a school nurse and took him immediately to emergency care, where he was diagnosed with a concussion. Ahsmann said Keegan will undergo the concussion protocol and see a doctor this week for further examination.

“He most likely will miss a game this week,” Ahsmann said. “Hopefully, we can get him back for the next week.”

Keegan played varsity as a freshman and received a scholarship offer from Northwestern this summer.

Big catch: The pass from McHenry quarterback Colton Klein looked like it was going to be a bit too long for sophomore receiver Braden Crowley, who was open near midfield.

Yet somehow, Crowley closed on the ball, plucked it from the air and stayed in bounds.

“I knew I was going to get it,” Crowley said. “I wasn’t sure (where I was).

Right when I caught it, I looked down at the sideline and I had 2 yards of space. I tucked it in and went straight ahead. I wasn’t looking back.”

Crowley’s 82-yard touchdown reception capped a brilliant offensive night for the Warriors (3-1 overall, 2-1 Fox Valley Conference) as they defeated Crystal Lake Central, 39-21. Crowley finished the game with four catches for 118 yards and nearly has caught running back Gio Purpura (10, 239) for the receiving lead, even as a sophomore.

Dunner (5-foot-11, 192 pounds) returned for the spring semester, but wore a blue jersey through practice designating him as a non-contact player. He ran and competed in drills … and paid attention.

“It was real tough at first,” Dunner said. “I was down on myself for like two months. At the end of the day, I had to go back to school and be a football player. I had to do whatever I could to get better. I wasn’t ready yet (for spring practices), so I watched and learned the plays.”

Lynch saw why Mike Steinhaus, the D-C head coach and Lynch’s teammate at Ball State, pressed the Cardinals to make Dunner a scholarship offer.

Steinhaus urged Lynch to trust him, telling Lynch that Dunner was the real deal.

Ball State also took note of Dunner’s sub-11-second 100-meter dash times that spring and made the scholarship offer. “[Dunner] is everything Mike said he was going to be,” Lynch said. “He’s a great kid, a great athlete and football’s very important to him. We really think we got a steal with Malik.

What’s so impressive about Malik is how mature and focused he was to be able to learn without actually getting live reps (in the spring). When he was healthy here in fall camp, he hit the ground running.”

Giese commits to UW-GB

akantecki@shawmedia.com Huntley junior Tiffany Giese was devastated when she heard the news that college softball coach Scott Wachholz was leaving Division II University of Wisconsin-Parkside for the same position at D-I UW-Green Bay. Giese verbally committed to Parkside on July 23, and Wachholz was named the Green Bay coach Aug. 19.

“I knew that I still had a lot of time to think, but Tiffany Giese in that moment I felt like I didn’t,” Giese said. “I felt kind of let down, and … it was just hard.”

Giese, a Class 4A Illinois Coaches Association All-State third-team selection last season, was unable to talk to Wachholz until Sept. 1 because of a NCAA rule preventing D-I coaches from contacting juniors.

Once they were able to talk, Giese felt

a sense of relief. She visited the Green Bay school a week ago and gave her commitment to Wachholz and the Phoenix on Sunday.

“He was really willing to work with me because I do like pitching and I do like hitting and (playing) outfield,” Giese said.

“Most of the time, you don’t get the option to hit and pitch, and he said he would work with me. The softball program seemed like it would really help me grow as a player.”

Giese, a Northwest Herald All-Area first-team selection as a sophomore, pitched and batted second last season to help lead the Red Raiders to a school-record 26 wins, their first Fox Valley Conference Valley Division championship and their second straight Class 4A regional title.

She went 25-7 in 35 starts with a 2.34 ERA and 197 strikeouts in 2181/3 innings, and hit .417 with 30 runs scored and 24 steals.

Dunner did not carry the ball in the season opener, a 31-21 Ball State victory over Georgia State, but with the Cardinals losing 30-0 at halftime last week, Lynch told him to be ready.

“It was exciting,” Dunner said. “I was ready when they called my number and I just saw openings and just tried to hit it and do the best I can. We almost came back.”

It might have been the best Dunner performed since his junior season at D-C, when he was dangerous as a runner, receiver and returner for the Chargers’ 6-4 team.

Dunner suffered a sprained ankle his senior season and finished with 633 rushing yards, but was not at full speed most of the season.

James Gilbert leads Ball State with 41 carries for 215 yards, and Darian Green has 24 attemps for 129 yards.

Cardinals coaches love the speed Dunner brings to the offense and want him getting touches, too.

“We really think we got a steal with Malik,” Lynch said. “He’s one of the most explosive kids we have on our football team. He has a different gear.

He’s one if he breaks it from the minus-20, he can go the distance. He has that type of explosion. He studies the plan, he’s very assignment-sound for a young kid. The bottom line is we have to get our best players on the field, and he’s one of our best players.”

Trojans coach Brad Seaburg fully expects Pennington to play next week against Huntley in a matchup of two 3-1 teams in the FVC. Seaburg hinted that Pennington probably could have played against Jacobs if the Trojans needed him, but the lopsided score gave him another week to rest.

“I would be shocked if he didn’t play next week,” Seaburg said.

“He was doing some cuts before the game, looked good. He was running around pretty well. We were fortunate the game was the

outcome it was so we could sit him one more week.”

Rough night: Marian Central was frustrated Friday with a 45-0 shutout at the hands of Marist, which was the Class 8A state runner-up last season.

It marked back-to-back games in which the offense has not produced a touchdown. “[Marist] controlled the line of scrimmage all day,” Marian coach Mike Maloney said. “There’s no secret to it, they’re big, strong and fast. We talked about our offseason having a big implication on this game. I’ve got to do a better job as the O-line coach to put those guys in a position to have success. We are a run-based offense, and they did turn us one-dimentional. We threw the ball a ton, and even at that we struggled protecting the quarterback. We’ve got some deficiencies up front that I’ve got a challenge to work on as the offensive line coach, and I’m confident that we’ll get there.”

Malik Dunner headed back to Muncie, Indiana, in August eager to actually play in football games, yet realizing that might not happen this fall.

Ball State’s backfield was full and Dunner had missed valuable on-field time in spring workouts while healing from surgery on his left leg. Those repetitions, Cardinals offensive coordinator Joey Lynch said, are invaluable to a young player’s learning process.

Nevertheless, Dunner, a 2015 DundeeCrown graduate, came to fall camp and made a distinct impression. His performance left the coaches only one choice.

“We couldn’t keep him off the field, honestly, he’s one of our best athletes and deserved to play,” Lynch said.

“Through two games, he’s made some plays for us, and the future’s bright.

He’ll continue to see the field for us.”

Dunner had a big second half in the Cardinals’ 30-20 loss to Indiana on Sept.

In the third quarter, Dunner played most of one series and had gains of 13 and 23 yards to spark the offense. It was a long way from the year before when he left Malik Dunner Muncie to return home to the Carpentersville area.

Dunner carried the ball nine times for 27 yards and had one catch for 7 yards in the Cardinals’ 41-14 victory over Eastern Kentucky on Saturday.

Dunner left for Ball State shortly after his high school graduation for summer classes and football workouts. A trainer discovered a bump on his shin, Dunner said he thinks the original injury occurred his junior season, and suggested he get it fixed.

Because he wasn’t playing, he came back and worked with his mother, Thelma Dunner, at Walmart. He had the procedure, where the surgeon stabilized his left tibia with a rod and two screws, in October.

Undefeated Hornets not focused on state return

jwilkinson@shawmedia.com Harvard’s 2014 state semifinal appearance loomed large over last season. The Hornets couldn’t help but think about getting back to the state’s biggest stage, and they were having another great season, losing only twice in the regular season and going more than a month between losses.

The Hornets might have been looking ahead a little too much, however, when they were tripped up in a regional final. After conceding a tying goal in the final five minutes and then losing in a 12-round penalty shootout, the Hornets’ 2015 season ended well short of a return trip to state.

“I think it pushed these seniors,” Hornets coach Victor Gonzalez said. “They were sophomores when they went to state two years ago and they contributed to that, but they didn’t like the way it ended last year.

“We felt we were a better team than who the team in the regional final was, does that make sense? We were a better team than what we showed. So now they’re motivated and they want to get the rest of the guys on board. So far that’s working because we’re playing well so far.”

Gonzalez said he’s trying to keep the players focused on a game-to-game basis, rather than looking toward returning to the state tournament.

“Last year, I think it was more like, we made it to state the year before, that’s what we have to look forward to,” Gonzalez said. “This year, it’s more like, ‘OK, our next game, that’s our focus, the next game, not the playoffs, not who we play two weeks from now, it’s the next game,’ that’s the focus. I think they’re buying into that a little bit, be ready for the next challenge and that’s it, then after that you can worry about what comes next.”

The first game of the 2016 season was an immediate wake-up call, as new conference foe Woodstock pushed the Hornets to penalty kicks.

Since then, the Hornets have gotten out to a 7-0-1 record, including going 4-0 in Kishwaukee River Conference play.

“It’s nice having an undefeated record, but that’s not how we look at it,” forward Alonzo Carrillo said. “We move on from our records and prepare for that next game, that’s what coach always tells us. It’s good to pat ourselves on the back once in awhile, but now we’ve a task to complete and we don’t let records define a team.”

Ehrhardt, Witt excel for UIC UIC’s volleyball team took bonding to a new level this offseason.

The players spent time attending other Flames’ sporting events.

And they took time to talk to each other about interests away from the court.

“We really worked hard at getting to know every single player well,” said Alyssa Ehrhardt, a senior outside hitter from Jacobs.

“I want them to have a great experience at UIC.” Some of the most powerful bonding took place over burritos at team meals.

“We do love our Chipotle,” Ehrhardt said with a laugh. “Who doesn’t?”

This fall, the tight-knit Flames have feasted on opponents. Headed into this weekend’s UIC Invitational, the team had won three tournaments and was 10-0, the best start in program’s NCAA Division I history. The Flames went 1-2 in the weekend invitational.

Tuesday’s 3-1 win against crosstown Loyola made the Flames the first UIC team to win 10 straight since 1986.

“We’ve gotten extremely close,” Ehrhardt said. “We really trust each other. We’re comfortable playing next to each other.”

Ehrhardt, who is in her second season at UIC after transferring from Toledo, leads the team in points (4.44) and kills per set (3.86)

ON CAMPUS Barry Bottino while playing in every set this season. She won Most Valuable Player honors in two of the tournaments and made the all-tournament team in the third.

“Alyssa is a really competitive player,” UIC coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley said.

“She wants to leave here on a high note. She’s really embracing her last couple of months as a college athlete.”

Along with Alyssa what SchumachEhrhardt er-Cawley calls a strong group of veteran leaders, the Flames have developing young players such as sophomore middle blocker Ali Witt of Prairie Ridge.

“She has a go-getter attitude,” Schumacher-Cawley said. “She’s worked so hard in the weight room. She’s in the best shape since she has been here.”

Witt made the all-tournament team at the DePaul Invitational on Sept. 9 and 10 with career highs of nine kills against South Florida and six blocks against DePaul.

“I knew to score against taller middles, I had to be faster and beat

them in transition,” Witt said. “I needed to get stronger and faster.

In the spring and summer, I really dedicated myself.”

This weekend’s home tournament featured Bowling Green (7-3) and fellow local athletes Nicole Slimko (Crystal Lake South) and Celena Kanagin (Richmond-Burton), along with UMass Lowell and SIU-Edwardsville. Next weekend, UIC dives into the much-anticipated Horizon League schedule.

Schumacher-Cawley said the team is chasing two important firsts, winning conference and playing in the NCAA tournament.

“When I was a freshman at Toledo, we won conference for the first time ever,” Ehrhardt said. “I would love to be the (UIC) team that made it to the tournament and won conference for the first time in history. I think we can do it.”

Sallee shines for Beloit: Huntley grad Kam Sallee played multiple roles in D-III Beloit College’s 42-32 home-opening win over Knox College on Sept. 10. For his efforts, the senior receiver/kicker won the Midwest Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honor.

Sallee kicked three field goals, including a school-record-tying 52-yard boot, in the victory. He rushed three times for 45 yards and caught three passes for 14 yards.

X-FACTOR ILB Danny Trevathan: The prize of free agency for the Bears, Trevathan was around the ball often against Houston with 11 tackles.

He also blitzed on third down late in the first half for one of the team’s two sacks. Monday night is a prime opportunity in Trevathan’s first game as a Bear at Soldier Field to make more impact plays. Ryan Mathews is not as effective a back as Lamar Miller, and Trevathan should be able to help the front seven limit Mathews and help put Eagles rookie QB Carson Wentz in difficult third-down situations. Maybe Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio will consider utilizing Trevathan in a blitzing situation more often after it worked last week. The inside ‘backer also could help the “D” defend TE Brent Celek and RB Darren Sproles in the middle of the field.

STAT TO KEEP IN MIND As effective as Wentz was in his debut, and as good as the Eagles’ O-line is, the Browns hit the Eagles’ quarterback nine times last week. The Bears hit Texans QB Brock Osweiler eight times, but sacked him only twice.

The Bears lost in Houston in the season opener because the Texans are a better team.

So drop all your focus on home openers, the Eagles’ opening week opponent, and rookie Kevin White and ask yourself the only fundamental question that matters: Are the Eagles as good or better than the Bears right now?

Rookie quarterback Carson Wentz is not as good as Jay Cutler – yet – but those two won’t play against each other Monday night.

Wentz had a marvelous debut against the Browns because he faced little pressure – the Eagles’ offensive line did a nice job of protecting him – and he stayed within himself, meaning he didn’t try to force throws into tight windows or difficult spots, in large part because he didn’t have to.

Can the Bears’ front seven pressure Wentz, and can the secondary tighten the gaps he has to throw into?

One of their biggest failings against Houston was the Bears failed to make Brock Osweiler uncomfortable in the pocket.

The Eagles’ offensive line is much better than the patchwork Texans group that shut down the Bears.

Although he is oft-injured and aging, Jason Peters is healthy right now, and when healthy and relatively fresh, he is one of the best left tackles in football.

Right tackle Lane Johnson was expected to be out with a 10-game suspension for a failed PED test, but he still is active and there is no explanation available as to why. But when active, Johnson is close to a Pro Bowl talent on the other side.

Allen Barbre and Jason Kelce are above-average performers at left guard and center, respectively, and right guard Brandon Brooks was one of the Eagles’ major spring free-agency acquisitions, ironically enough from the Texans.

If the Bears’ front seven doesn’t step up its game significantly over last week, this matchup will be a big problem.

On the flip side, the Bears’ secondary was better than advertised in Houston, with cornerback Tracy Porter having a particularly strong game and Jacoby Glenn, Bryce Callahan and Deiondre’ Hall all flashing more good than bad.

KEY MATCHUP TO WATCH Eagles DT Fletcher Cox vs. Bears RG Kyle Long: Cox will move around the line a bit, especially on passing downs, when he sometimes lines up over the center or a tackle. But he most often will rush against the Bears’ best player, Long. Cox has the strength and speed off the snap to get into the backfield, giving the Eagles an interior pass rush. He had a sack last week against the Browns and 9.5 sacks last season, which helped earn him a massive $100 million contract. Cox has great athleticism for his size, and he’ll challenge Long, a formidable athlete in his own right, who is playing the season through a shoulder injury. Long was effective against the Texans last week, especially on Jeremy Langford’s touchdown plunge. He has the right tools to combat Cox to keep the Eagles’ defensive star away from Jay Cutler. Josh Sitton, if he ever is up against Cox, will need to use his strength and footwork to win aginst Cox at the point of attack. Neutralize the star and make other players beat you – that will be the mantra for the Bears’ O-line against Cox.

Hendricks, Cubs lose The ASSOCIATED PRESS

CHICAGO – A year ago, Kyle Hendricks might have been satisfied giving up a couple runs in a start.

Now, as a Cy Young candidate, Hendricks expects more from himself.

Hendricks, the major league ERA leader, allowed two runs in six innings and remained stuck on 15 victories as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the NL Central champion Cubs, 3-1, Sunday.

“It definitely means Kyle Hendricks my mentality is just in a different place,” Hendricks said.

“This game last year, I probably would have been a lot happier with it. Resulting in a loss, I feel like I could have done a little more just with the tools I have available to me, where I’m at this year.”

Hendricks (15-8), making his first start since losing a no-hit bid in the ninth inning at St. Louis, struck out nine and gave up six hits. His ERA rose

from 2.03 to 2.06 as he lost for the first time since July 26 at the White Sox. Last year, he went 8-7 with a 3.95 ERA in his second season.

“We have not supported him runwise a lot this year, and there’s another great example today,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “He definitely pitched well enough to win, and we only came up with the one run, so it’s just unfortunate. He didn’t have his best stuff, but nine punchouts and two runs in six, pretty good day.”

Royals 10, White Sox 3: At Kansas City, Mo., Jose Quintana entered September in the AL Cy Young Award conversation with an 11-9 record and a 2.77 ERA. A trio of lackluster starts has taken him out of it.

Quintana allowed six runs over four innings against Kansas City.

Quintana (12-11) faced 24 batters, gave up a season-high 10 hits and three walks. It was his shortest outing since April 19, 2015, at Detroit.

“It’s just a bad day.” Quintana said.

“They hit me good early, and that’s all.

That changed the game for me.”

“It’s our last year. Our main focus is going far; we’re never going to get this chance again,” Carrillo said. “It’s very important to push everybody on the team, not just ourselves. We’re not the whole team, it’s everyone together, we’ve got to work together. That’s about us as captains, our responsibility to push all of our team.

“That was sad knowing I wasn’t going to have Jess anymore,” Giese said.

Huntley is 92-47 in the past four seasons under coach Mark Petryniec, but lost two of its top hitters to graduation in Shields and Hayley O’Mara, both Class 4A ICA All-State selections.

“I think another regional would be good. It would be nice to win three in a row,” Giese said. “We’ll definitely have a new team this year, so we’re going to have to build that up. It’s going to be a lot of practice, a lot of work and effort, but I think we’ll be good.”
