By EMILY K. COLEMAN ecoleman@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – Marzena Rutkowski has been taking one class at a time, preparing herself to enter McHenry County College’s nursing program while still taking care of her three kids, ages 8 to 11, and working part-time as a certified nursing assistant.

The Crystal Lake resident has been in school for five years, first at College of Lake County and then starting two years ago at McHenry County College.

“This is exhausting,” Rutkowski said. “I think it’s worth it. You just have to be patient and keep moving.”

More than half of part-time McHenry County College students, however, don’t keep coming back, according the college’s statistics for fall 2014 students.

The rate is significantly less than the 67 percent of full-time students who return the next year, numbers that mirror the state rates.

McHenry County College did not provide completion rates for part-time students, although only 8.9 percent of part-time students in Illinois finish a two-year associate degree within four years, according to Complete College America, a nonprofit looking to increase the number of adults with post-secondary certificates or degrees.

The reason behind the low numbers is that a majority of MCC’s part-time students are adult learners, said Juletta Patrick, the college’s assistant vice president of Academic and Student Affairs “They come to us with all kinds of unique situations that differ from full-time students,” she said. “There’s work. There’s family. There’s transportation. There’s money or financial concerns.”

To help students with the transition to school, MCC offers new-student orientations and sessions designed to help adult learners adjust to college as well as online and on-site tutoring options, Patrick said. Some students also can get credit for nontraditional learning such as military and on-the-job training and through proficiency exams.

A big part of the problem also is just the sheer length of time – 5.5 years for associate’s degrees, on average – it takes for part-time students to graduate, said Dhanfu Elston, Complete College America’s vice president.

These students, on average, actually are accruing more college credits than they actually need for graduation – about 10 to 20 credit hours more than the 60 needed for associate’s degrees, he said.

with academic maps that lay out for students what classes they need to take and when to graduate on time.

extra classes he really didn’t need his first time at McHenry County College to just figure out what he wanted to do.

This time – now a part-time computer science and physics student – he has a plan, and it’s helping him stay on track and maintain a 4.0 grade-point average.

But even now, scheduling can be difficult, he said. He sometimes has one class in the morning and another later in the evening, a problem he thinks could be alleviated by letting students take classes at other local community colleges that do offer the courses at the times they need.

McHenry County College has its own scheduling options designed to make life easier for part-time students, including Fast Track programs where some classes run in eight-week stretches instead of 16 weeks; and some use a blended format, combining in-class time with online portions, Patrick said, adding that the goal is to expand the number of such programs.

The college also is looking into doing a predictive analysis on its students’ scheduling patterns, which would help them know which classes they should be grouping together to maximize student enrollment in those courses, Patrick said.

If Paul Turnbaugh had his choice, the weather in Illinois would be perpetual fall – perfect conditions for hunting, fishing and pulling inspiration for a new painting.

Turnbaugh, 60, is a Marengo-based artist who runs WildHeartland Inc., a business where he paints scenes from nature, but also uses his art to support veteran organizations. Among his most recent ventures, Turnbaugh is designing a Gold Star Family Memorial Monument in Springfield to honor families who lost a family member serving in the military.

Turnbaugh works Feb. 11 in Marengo.

Before Turnbaugh took on painting the charms of the Midwest full time, he was an illustrator. He created an iteration of Miss Chiquita and illustrated “The Chronicles of Narnia” series.

Turnbaugh spoke with reporter Katie Dahlstrom about his transition from illustrator to painter.

Dahlstrom: So why, 15 years ago, did you

decide to branch out and start doing your own kind of art?

Turnbaugh: Well, illustration has been on the demise since the advent of desktop publishing and the Internet. I still do illustrating work, but it’s just a small percentage of what it used to be.

Huntley, Woodstock discuss safe bike crossings for Route 47 Design process moves forward for multi-use path along Route 47 in Huntley

and HANNAH PROKOP hprokop@shawmedia.com Both Huntley and Woodstock are exploring changes for Route 47 to make it safer to cross the high-traffic road.

In Huntley, which has substantially completed engineering design for a multi-use path along Route 47, the Committee of the Whole discussed crosswalks to connect to the path at its Thursday meeting.

Trustees at the meeting instructed engineers to plan signalized crosswalks at both Del Webb Boulevard and Regency Parkway so more residents living west of Route 47 will be able to cross safely.

The planned path on the east side of Route 47, which will be funded pri-

marily through an Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program grant, is designed to connect the commercial area with the bicycle paths near Kreutzer Road.

Trustees unanimously said they wanted to get both crosswalks improved upfront, which will add about $230,000 to the total estimated construction costs of the project.

“In the annual survey we give residents, they all ask for more bike paths and walkable areas,” Trustee Ronda Goldman said. “This is something they’d want.”

The plan is to be presented to the public for discussion in March or April before planners coordinate with the Illinois Department of Transportation. Final design approval is expected to come in August, according to a timeline provided by planners.

Although Woodstock hasn’t finalized any plans for crossings or paths along Route 47, the city’s transportation commission is making sure safe crossings are a priority in the IDOT’s Route 47 project.

Because the project may take years to complete, the Woodstock transpor-

tation commission has taken a look at how to make the route safe in the meantime.

After the city council’s direction to look into safe crossings in light of a pedestrian crash that occurred on Route 47 in Woodstock, the commission started to review crosswalk options and collect data from the Woodstock Police Department on crashes along the route.

“All they’re really doing right now is gathering some information on what can be done,” Woodstock Public Works Director Jeff Van Landuyt said.

Steve Schilke, major project unit head with IDOT, said the project to improve Route 47 from Route 14 to Charles Road still is in its first environmental studies phase. He said that early on, IDOT has heard concerns about the lack of biker and pedestrian crossings along the route, and he said adding roundabouts to the corridor could be a way to improve safety.

Phase 2 of the Route 47 project – land acquisition and plan preparation – may not start until the start of 2017, he said.

Continued from page A4 was my opportunity to get into something where I could be painting what I’ve been itching to paint and what I love to paint my whole life.

Now I paint the things I want to paint.

When you illustrate, one job can be painting a carburetor for a company or a bottle of mouthwash, whatever. There are guidelines.

You’re really problem-solving to create an image for that product.

Now, it’s up to me what I paint.

I’m an avid hunter and a fisherman and outdoorsman. I paint a lot of that kind of stuff. I paint a lot for military organizations, so I’m always painting military-themed things and patriotic images. And my son is veteran of the Army infantry, so that’s what inspired me to start painting military support images.

Dahlstrom: You touched on this a little bit, but what inspires your art?

Turnbaugh: Absolute love of nature. When I see sandhill cranes, or we’ve got bald eagles out here, coyotes – all instances of wild-

life – it really inspires me. Really, everything I paint, every category – whether it’s patriotic or wildlife, hunting and fishing, the rural life, small-town life – all of that, it’s the things I love. So when I paint it, it’s far more satisfying than illustration ever was.

Dahlstrom: What sort of materials do you use?

Turnbaugh: I mainly paint in – it’s called gouache and water colors and oils. But I’ve used a lot of different mediums. That’s another exciting part of my job. I get to say, “OK. What am I going to paint? What am I going to use? What medium? How big am I going to make it? How am I going to compose it?” And those are all things I didn’t get to do when I was an illustrator.

Dahlstrom: Is there a piece you’re most proud of?

Turnbaugh: There are a lot of them, but the thing I just won the People’s Choice Award at Fourth Friday at the Starline Factory is called Kishwaukee Heron. That created quite a stir.

Dahlstrom: What does it look like?

Could you describe it?

Turnbaugh: Sure. I was fishing in the Kishwaukee [River], and I

carry my cellphone in my chest waders. I saw this amazing tree on the bank, so I took a cellphone picture of it. Later on, when I was still fishing, I saw a heron that was wading on the waters. I took a picture of him and then a composed a scene that included both of them and turned it into one big painting.

That’s the one that won a lot of people’s love.

Dahlstrom: What is about the Midwest that you love? Are you an Illinois native?

Turnbaugh: I am an Illinois native.

Born in Springfield, raised in Moline. Then I went out to California to go to school in Oakland and get my degree. I started my illustration career out there, but I missed the seasons, so I moved back to Illinois.

$5.8M Recreation Center to open Feb. 29

Just over a week remains before Feb. 29, the tentative opening date for the 18,200-square-foot facility with multi-purpose rooms and a 4,500-squarefoot fitness center.

“We’re excited and nervous at the same time,” Deputy City Administrator Bill Hobson said. “There’s a lot of cleaning. It’s a flurry of activity right now, but we’re very excited for where we’re at and where we’re headed.”

The McHenry Recreation Center has been in the works since 1999, when the city council decided to save 50 percent of its developer donation revenue for a combined aquatic and recreation center.

“They can actually work everything at one time for efficiency to get in and out,” he said. “When all of our lives are getting busier, functional training has really helped people stay in shape and work out in a new way.”

About 500 memberships have been purchased since they went on sale in early December, putting the city at the top end of the range it hoped to hit before the facility opened, LaPorte said. The center needs about a thousand memberships by the end of the year to be in the black, although other revenue streams such as renting, baby-sitting fees and advertising may offset that number.

“With presale numbers being ahead of where I thought they’d be, I’m encouraged,” Hobson said.

Interest in renting the space also has been above what they expected, LaPorte said.

D-155 plans $8.9M Have Fat? We Can Help! in summer projects Free Gourmet

By ALLISON GOODRICH agoodrich@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – Crystal Lakebased Community High School District 155 has planned about $8.9 million worth of summer projects.

Replacing or updating the HVAC systems in Crystal Lake Central, Crystal Lake South and Cary-Grove high schools will make up a large portion of the work, District 155 Director of Operations Jeff Daurer said.

Additionally, a number of contractors have been enlisted for asbestos abatement; masonry; steel work; general carpentry; roofing work; doors/ frames/hardware work; flooring; painting; and electrical work, according to district documents.

The district also will be adding ventilation to the “IT closets,” which are where the server equipment and wireless access points are located, Daurer

said.

In total, the more than 80 projects will come with a price tag of $8,945,615, he added.

While most of the work will begin once school lets out, Daurer said, some light work – such as installing valves so water doesn’t have to be shut off all summer – will begin while students are on spring break.

“This is a significant amount of work for a school district to accomplish in a summer,” Daurer said, adding it is being funded partially through the health/life safety bonds the district sold in the last couple years.

Those not considered life/safety items will be paid for out of the capital improvement fund.

“This is certainly not lavish spending,” Daurer said. “These are things that have to be done in order to make sure our community’s assets are protected.”

I

n 1983, inside the San Diego Public Library, Rob Fisher opened a book that sparked his life’s career and passion – piano tuning. He was serving in the U.S. Navy when the theory and history behind piano tuning first piqued his interest in “Piano Tuning and Allied Arts.”

Having been inclined musically and a guitar player himself, he thought he’d give the unique profession a try and enrolled in a tuning program for the blind at Blackhawk Technical College.

Since then, he moved to McHenry County and has been tuning, repairing and rebuilding pianos for the community for three decades.

There are two ways to tune pianos – by ear or with electric tuners. Fisher does it the same way it’s been done for hundreds of years, which is by ear.

“Once you learn how to do

it, it’s kind of like driving a car.

It becomes automatic,” Fisher said. “A common misunderstanding of piano tuning is that tuners listen to the pitch of a string and adjust it sharp or flat accordingly.

“What piano tuners actually listen to are the interference beats that result from two strings being out of tune.”

It’s been 33 years since he brought that first book back to his ship, and his love for tuning still is evident. Today, you’ll find him doing more than just tuning. At Fisher Piano Service in Crystal Lake, he also inspects, repairs and cleans pianos and replaces key tops. He even offers talks and demonstrations on how the piano works, how it is tuned, the origin of musical scales and the physics of music for church and school groups.

HUNTLEY – The police department hopes to solve the problem of fractured emergency response service in the village with a proposal to contract with Southeast Emergency Communications (SEECOM) for 911 and dispatch services.

The proposal was moved forward by the Committee of the Whole at Thursday’s meeting.

The Huntley Police Department currently uses the dispatching services of the Lake in the Hills Police, but a 2015 state law mandating dispatch consolidation means that dispatch center is closing, along with others in Harvard and Woodstock.

Huntley Police Chief Robert Porter said Thursday that SEECOM’s proposal provided a lower cost per call and base rate than the other remaining options at the McHenry County Sheriff’s

Department and McHenry City Police Department, but the move would more than double the department’s dispatch fees from $155,000 in fiscal 2016 to nearly $335,000 in 2017.

The Huntley Fire Protection District already uses SEECOM, and Porter said calls meant for the fire department often get directed to the Lake in the Hills dispatch center. Those calls then have to be transferred to SEECOM before personnel are dispatched, causing inefficiency in the system.

“Removing the fractured system, I think, is the most important piece,” Trustee JR Westberg said.

Additionally, Porter said mutual aid would become more efficient because nearby communities such as Algonquin and Crystal Lake already use SEECOM, and Lake in the Hills is also considering moving there.

The Village Board will officially vote Thursday on whether to approve the contract.

STATE 8 months and counting: No clear path on budget saga

By IVAN MORENO The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner’s attempt last week to spur lawmakers into action left no clear way forward in Illinois’ seemingly never-ending budget saga.

The state remains far from passing a budget for the current year – let alone next year’s – and months of legislative hand-wringing has done nothing to change the predicament the state finds itself in.

In the latest chapter, Rauner urged lawmakers to make a choice now: Pass the business-friendly reforms he wants in exchange for his approval of a full $36 billion budget, which would include raising taxes, or allow the Republican to make $3.5 billion in cuts from the spending plan however he chooses.

But Rauner’s proposition in his annual budget address appeared to do little to move Democrats who control the Legislature.

BUFFALO GROVE – Police said a woman in suburban Chicago has died after dousing herself with gasoline and setting herself ablaze.

Buffalo Grove police said the woman died in a hospital Saturday, a day after the fire. Her name wasn’t released.

Program aims to boost bond between black fathers, sons

GOLDEN – A descendant of the man who built the historical Golden Windmill in western Illinois has discovered letters indicating the mill shipped flour worldwide more than a century ago.

Carolyn Ware was cleaning out the attic of her father’s Clayton home and found letters to her great-grandfather, H.H. Emminga, from 1889 to 1891. H.H. Emminga took over the operation in 1878, five years after his father built the mill but returned to Germany.

Gunman kills 6 in shootings at car dealership, restaurant

By JEFF KAROUB The Associated Press KALAMAZOO, Mich. – A gunman who seemed to choose his victims at random opened fire outside an apartment complex, a car dealership and a restaurant in Michigan, killing six people in a rampage that lasted nearly seven hours, police said.

Authorities identified the shooter as Jason Dalton, a 45-year-old Uber driver and former insurance adjuster who police said had no criminal record. They could not say what motivated him to target victims with no apparent connection to him or to each other in the Saturday night shootings.

“How do you go and tell the families of these victims that they weren’t targeted for any reason other than they were there to be a target?” Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting said Sunday at a news conference.

Dalton, who was arrested in Kalamazoo following a massive manhunt, was expected to be arraigned Monday on murder charges.

sheriff Paul Matyas described a terrifying series of attacks that began about 6 p.m. Saturday outside the Meadows apartment complex on the eastern edge of Kalamazoo County, where a woman was shot multiple times. She was expected to survive.

Fifteen minutes after that, five people Jason Dalton were gunned down in the parking lot of a Cracker Barrel restaurant, Matyas said.

Four of them died.

“These are random murders,” Matyas said.

Dalton was arrested without incident about 12:40 a.m.

Sunday after a deputy spotted his vehicle driving through downtown Kalamazoo after leaving a bar parking lot, authorities said.

Matyas declined to disclose anything found in the vehicle except for a semi-automatic handgun.

By midday, authorities were investigating a Facebook post that indicated the suspect was driving for Uber during the manhunt and had taken at least one fare, Getting said.

A spokeswoman for Uber confirmed that Dalton had driven for the company in the past, but she declined to say whether he was driving Saturday night.

Uber prohibits both passengers and drivers from possessing guns of any kind in a vehicle. Anyone found to be in violation of the policy may be prohibited from using or driving for the service.

A man who knows Dalton said he was a married father of two who never showed any signs of violence.

Gary Pardo Jr., whose parents live across the street from Dalton in Kalamazoo Township, described him as a family man who seemed fixated on cars and often worked on them.

“He would go a month without mowing his lawn but was very meticulous with his cars,” Pardo said, explaining that Dalton, at times, owned a Chevrolet Camaro and two Hummer SUVs.

Fallen WWII hero’s Army dog tag found on Pacific island

By CHRIS CAROLA The Associated Press ALBANY, N.Y. – Dorothy Hollingsworth was just 7 when her brother Tom left the family farm in Indiana to join the Army a few months before the United States entered World War II. She never saw him again.

Now, more than 70 years after Pfc. Thomas E. Davis was killed in one of the war’s final, major battles, a tangible reminder of her beloved sibling has been found on the Pacific island of Saipan — one of his Army dog tags.

“He was a great guy,” said Hollingsworth, 82, who lives outside Dayton, Ohio, noting that some of her earliest memories are of the tall, thin sibling 17 years her senior who always sat next to her at the dinner table. “He was always laughing and singing and whistling.”

Cultural historian Genevieve Cabrera told The Associated Press in an email that she found the discolored metal tag sticking out of the soil of a farm field on Saipan in early 2014. It was embossed with Davis’ name, serial number, hometown and other information.

Cabrera recently gave the tag to members of Kuentai, a Japan-based organization that has found the re-

mains of five 27th Division soldiers on Saipan. The group notified the AP this month about the dog tag’s discovery in the hope that his relatives could be found. The AP tracked down members of the soldier’s family with the help of Anthony Barger, the archivist for the Putnam County Public Library.

Kuentai representatives said they’ll arrange to meet the Davis family in the U.S. to hand over the tag.

While it is relatively common to find canteens, weapons and even unexploded shells from the 100,000 Americans and Japanese who fought for 25 days on Pfc. Thomas the 46-square-mile island, dog tags remain E. Davis a rare find, Cabrera said. The tags, attached to a chain worn around the neck, were the only item of military-issued gear a soldier wore daily that included potentially life-saving information such as blood type and when a tetanus shot was administered.

A year before Davis died in the battle for Okinawa in April 1945, he earned one of the nation’s highest military honors after surviving the bloody fighting on Saipan.

According to wartime records kept at the New York State Military Museum, home to many of the 27th Division’s documents, Davis earned the Silver Star on Saipan in June 1944 for risking his own life to rescue a wounded comrade “at a time when the American front was undergoing brutal Japanese artillery and mortar fire.”

Davis went into the Army in September 1941, three months before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor drew

the U.S. into WWII. He served in the 165th Infantry Regiment of the 27th Infantry Division, a New York National Guard unit mobilized into active service in 1940.

Davis was with the 27th when it took part in the Okinawa invasion, which began on April 1, 1945. Three weeks later, he was shot by a Japanese sniper while again helping a wounded soldier, according to what Hollingsworth says military officials told the family. Davis died April 30, two months shy of his 28th birthday. Four years later, his body was brought back for reburial in his hometown.

Davis was born and raised on his family’s farm in Roachdale in Putnam County, Indiana, 30 miles west of Indianapolis. His mother died when he was a young boy, and his father remarried. Davis had six siblings: an older brother, Harold, three half brothers and two half sisters, including Hollingsworth. The brothers have died. His other half-sister, Hazel Priest, 81, lives in Victoria, Texas, and several nieces and nephews live in Texas, Ohio and Indiana.

Hollingsworth said Tom Davis, of Victoria, a 57-year-old machinist who was named after his uncle, will likely get the dog tag.

Characters 40 years or older skew heavily male across film and TV: 74.3 percent male to 25.7 percent female.

Just 2 percent of speaking characters were LGBT-identified. Among the 11,306 speaking characters studied, only seven were transgendered (and four were from the same series).

Behind the camera, the discrepancy is even greater. Directors overall were 87 percent white. Broadcast TV directors (90.4 percent white) were the least diverse.

Just 15.2 percent of directors, 28.9 percent of writers and 22.6 percent of series creators were female. In film, the gender gap is greatest: Only 3.4 percent of the films studied were directed by women, and only two directors out of the 109 were black women: Ava DuVernay (“Sel-

ma”) and Amma Asante (“Belle”).

USC’s study, which the school has been publishing in various forms for the last 10 years, also seeks to add a new metric in the conversation. The “inclusivity index” is a report card for the performances of 21st Century Fox, CBS, NBC Universal, Sony, the Walt Disney Co., Time Warner, Viacom, Amazon, Hulu and Netflix. Those companies encompass all the broadcast networks, most major cable channels, all of the major movie studios and three of the dominant streaming services.

Each was rated by their percentage of female, minority and LGBT characters; and of female writers and directors.

None of the six major studios rated better than 20 percent overall; Time Warner fared poorest of all with a score of zero.

The report concludes that the film industry “still functions as a straight, white, boy’s club.”

Disney, Sony, Paramount, Fox, Universal and Warner Bros. didn’t immediate comment Sunday night.

Texas private colleges say no to guns on campus

By JIM VERTUNO The Associated Press AUSTIN, Texas – When Texas’ conservative Legislature passed a law requiring public universities to allow concealed guns on campus, it also gave the state’s private institutions of higher learning the chance to follow suit.

None has so far.

More than 20 private schools have said they won’t lift their gun bans when the law takes effect this August, including the state’s largest private universities that have religious affiliations and often align with the type of conservative values espoused by the politicians behind the law.

The opposition has not surprised

top Texas Republicans who championed the law as a matter of constitutional rights and self-defense. But it reflects a widespread belief even among conservative university leaders that guns have no place in the classroom.

Baylor, Texas Christian and Southern Methodist universities have all declined to allow guns on their campuses.

Previous law generally banned concealed handguns from Texas’ public and private universities.

That changed last year, when lawmakers passed the so-called “campus carry” law that requires public universities to allow concealed handgun license holders to bring their weapons into campus buildings and classrooms.

that allow some form of campus carry.

But only a few make it a defined right in state law as Texas does.

The law faced strong objections from public higher education officials, law enforcement, students and faculty across the state. Opponents included University of Texas System Chancellor William McRaven, the former head of U.S. Special Operations Command who directed the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. A notable exception was Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp, who said guns on campus didn’t trouble him.

NEW YORK – In one of the most exhaustive and damning reports on diversity in Hollywood, a new study finds that the films and television produced by major media companies are “whitewashed,” and that an “epidemic of invisibility” runs top to bottom through the industry for women, minorities and LGBT people.

A study to be released Monday by the Media, Diversity and Social Change Initiative at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism offers one of the most wide-ranging examinations of the film and television industries, including a pointed “inclusivity index” of 10 major media companies – from Disney to Netflix – that gives a failing grade to every movie studio and most TV makers.

Coming just days before an Academy Awards where a second straight year of

all-white acting nominees has enflamed an industry-wide crisis, the report offers a new barrage of sobering statistics that further evidence a deep discrepancy between Hollywood and the American population it entertains, in gender, race and ethnicity.

“The prequel to OscarsSoWhite is HollywoodSoWhite,” said Stacy L. Smith, a USC professor and one of the study’s authors, in an interview. “We don’t have a diversity problem. We have an inclusion crisis.”

The study, titled the Comprehensive Annenberg Report on Diversity, examined the 109 films released by major studios (including art-house divisions) in 2014 and 305 scripted, first-run TV and digital series across 31 networks and streaming services that aired from September 2014 to August 2015. More than 11,000 speaking characters were analyzed for gender, racial and ethnic representation and LGBT status. Some 10,000 directors, writers and show creators were examined, as was the gender

How Roberts can honor Scalia legacy The sudden death of Justice Antonin Scalia has given Chief Justice John Roberts a unique opportunity to affirm the Supreme Court’s rightful place in American politics: keeping the law above politics.

He should seize it, even though – and especially because – the high court has a tenuous hold on that place.

Within hours of Scalia’s death, Republican leaders in the Senate announced they would not consider confirming his replacement until after the 2016 election. Never before has the Senate attempted to put off an appointment for so long, nor has the court’s balance of power been thrust so forcefully into the middle of a presidential campaign.

Perhaps the Republicans’ gambit will have the effect of galvanizing voters in both parties. It also could further damage the integrity of an institution that has become as polarized as the electoral system it is shielded from. A presidential campaign that doubles as an election to replace Scalia would position the court as an extension of the parties more directly than ever before.

That may well be unavoidable, but Roberts can mitigate some of the damage to the court by taking a modest step: Reminding the Senate an election year does not absolve it from its constitutional duties.

It would not be the first time Roberts decried politics intruding on the appointment process. “A persistent problem has developed in the process of filling judicial vacancies,” Roberts wrote in 2010.

“Each political party has found it easy to turn on a dime from decrying to defending the blocking of judicial nominations, depending on their changing political fortunes. This has created acute difficulties for some judicial districts.”

Now that same problem has created difficulties for the Supreme Court itself.

In his own 2005 confirmation hearing, Roberts likened his role as a judge to an umpire who calls balls and strikes. Umpires also can (contrary to popular belief) call a delay of game violation, and occasionally even break up on-field conferences aimed at buying warm-up time for relief pitchers.

Roberts has no authority to force the Senate into action, but he is free to tell them to get on with it – to basically trot out to the pitcher’s mound and tell the players to stop dawdling and do what the people expect them to do. They don’t have to listen to him, but they certainly should respect his commitment to fair play.

An increasingly dangerous world graphically shaped by terrorist attacks in Paris, Cologne, Jakarta and Istanbul has descended upon our nation at San Bernardino, Fort Hood, Chattanooga, Boston and, most recently, Philadelphia.

Career politicians respond with candlelight vigils and “Coexist” bumper stickers as they quietly restrict citizens’ Second Amendment right to self-defense, demonize/

smother religious freedom in exchange for vacuous rhetoric preaching tolerance geared to silence debate in the public square.

Historians dutifully note Socrates ultimately faced execution for asking too many questions.

It seems transparency in ancient Greece made the ruling elites quite nervous, much like today. Tea party activists, distributing copies of our founding documents in public forums, find themselves labeled “extreme” by the same elected officials exposed as phonies by the hallowed words in those cherished parchments.

This year affords every American a unique vision of their government made abundantly transparent by the plethora of news sources across a broad range of technology-driven media.

Perhaps, at long last, we’ll be paying close attention this time.

If you’d only seen it on MSNBC or read about it in the Washington Post, you’d think he made a political blunder, trashing President Obama as a weak leader.

On Hayes’ program “All In,” the host chided the former president for going “a bit off message.” MSNBC aired this video clip: “BILL CLINTON: She’s always making something good happen. She’s the best change-maker I’ve ever known. A lot of people say, ‘Oh, well, you don’t understand. It’s different now. It’s rigged.’ Yeah, it’s rigged – because you don’t have a president who is a change-maker.”

Full stop.

Ouch! To the Washington Post’s Abby Phillips, “it sounded like he was agreeing with one of (Bernie) Sanders’ central arguments about income inequality – but blaming the sitting president for it.”

Older and thinner, Mr. Yesterday was clearly losing it.

Except he wasn’t. The real villain was, once again, creative video editing. Tommy Christopher at Mediaite.com restored the full context.

So here’s what Bill Clinton actually said about President Obama: “Yeah, it’s rigged – because you don’t have a president who is a change-maker with a Congress who will work with him. But the president has done a better job than he has gotten credit for. And don’t you forget it!”

(APPLAUSE) “Don’t you forget it! Don’t you forget it!”

(LOUDER APPLAUSE) “Don’t you forget it. Let me just tell you.

I’ve been there, and we shared the same gift.

We only had a Democratic Congress for two years. And then we lost it.

“There’s some of the loudest voices in our party say – it’s unbelievable – say, ‘Well the only reason we had it for two years is that President Obama wasn’t liberal enough!’ Is there one soul in this crowd that believes that?”

Mediaite.com’s Christopher put it succinctly: “This is an edit so egregious, it rivals the worst in dishonest political ads, and surpasses them.”

Greatly to his credit (and my surprise), Hayes subsequently rebroadcast Bill Clinton’s remarks in full. “We shouldn’t have done that,” he admitted.

No, they certainly should not.

Alas, this is pretty much where I came in.

Starting in 1994, when your humble, obedient servant was approached to contribute weekly political columns, I found the behavior of the national political press shocking and alarming. Today, it’s even worse.

Even so, it’s not every day a TV talker apologizes for broadcasting a doctored video misrepresenting something Bill Clinton said about President Barack Obama. So it’s definitely worth taking note.

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes did that the other night, at least temporarily persuading me the network hasn’t yet gone full Fox News.

First, some ancient history on a theme directly relevant to today’s Democratic primary campaign: Hillary the Big Liar.

See, by 1994, I’d been writing professionally for years, mainly as a literary journalist and monthly magazine reporter. The publications I’d written for employed assiduous fact-checkers. Opinions were expected, so long as they were grounded in fact. After all, what’s the point of winning an argument if you’ve got to cheat to do it?

However, that’s not how Washington journalism works. One incident in particular astonished me.

In April 1994, Hillary Clinton had given a news conference about the make-believe Whitewater scandal. She answered every question the press threw at her for a couple of hours. The immediate effect was rather like last fall’s Benghazi hearings: Her detailed answers calmed the storm. Having previously given sworn testimony to Treasury Department investigators probing Jim McDougal’s failed savings and loan, she was on solid ground.

Two years further on, ABC’s “Nightline” dug up a video clip of an answer she’d given about a specific issue and seamlessly deleted two sentences by substituting stock footage of journalists taking notes. Then they pretended she’d been asked a much broader question, and accused her of lying about the information they’d subtracted.

Specifically, Hillary acknowledged signing a letter “because I was what we called the billing attorney” for the Madison Guaranty account.

“Nightline” charged her with concealing exactly that fact. Jeff Greenfield said no wonder “the White House was so worried about what was in Vince Foster’s office when he killed himself” – a contemptible insinuation.

Within days, the doctored quote was all over ABC News, CNN, the New York Times and everywhere else. Almost needless to say, Maureen Dowd ran with it. William Safire predicted her imminent criminal indictment.

In short, the theme of Hillary Clinton as epic liar began with an instance of barefaced journalistic fraud.

• Opt for cream of wheat cereal. It’s white and has a child’s daily requirement for iron.

• Ask your child to help with simple food prep. By handling and touching different

nonwhite foods without pressure to eat them, your child may be more likely to taste them at mealtime.

• Be patient. A typical young child needs multiple exposures to a new food before he’ll risk tasting it – and 10 to 20 tastes before he actually likes it. So give it time.

Dr. K: My preschooler will eat only white foods. I’m worried he’s not getting the proper nutrients to grow and develop.

What can I do?

Dear Reader: I’m not a pediatrician, but when I trained in pediatrics in medical school, I was amazed by how many parents brought their kids to the doctor because the kids were picky eaters.

My pediatrician colleagues here at Harvard Medical School tell me many “white food fanciers” start off as adventurous eaters. Then around the age of 2 or 2½, they refuse anything with color.

Instead, they opt exclusively for white or beige foods, usually carbohydrates.

Favorites include plain noodles, chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes, white bread and white cheese.

The good news is by the time most children reach the age of 10, they’re digging into a wide spectrum of foods.

While you’re waiting for your child to mature, you might be wringing your hands, worried your little one isn’t getting enough nutrients and fiber. But if your child is measuring within the growth chart and has energy to spare, there’s probably nothing to worry about.

Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t try to gently change your child’s eating behaviors: • Counteract your concern. Pressure and heavy-handed encouragement likely will backfire. If you can’t stop worrying, speak with your pediatrician. For example, if your child’s favorite foods don’t include all of the vitamins he or she needs, multivitamins in liquid or pill form may deliver what’s needed until your child eats a more balanced diet.

• Set an example. Show your child

have been in a relationship with my girlfriend, “Allison,” for two years, but lately there have been frequent rough patches. I’m 18 and a college student. I love Allison, but the relationship is taking a toll on us physically and emotionally.

We have had to deal with separation ever since we got together. She’s the only one with a car and a “real” job. I work on campus in a work-study program in exchange for reduced tuition. I try to help Allison as much as I can to reduce the stress on her.

She has asked me to transfer schools, but I’d like to stay where I am because I feel I will have the ability to make something of myself. Our son passed away unexpectedly 17 months ago. Our family, neighbors and community gave us lots of support. Our son was loved by all. Occasionally, one defender has to find the way out of the jungle on his own, but more often the partners can guide each other.

In this deal, how should East plan the defense in three no-trump after West leads the club jack?

South had a minimum one-notrump opening, but there was no particular reason to downgrade.

North had an obvious Stayman hand, hoping to find a 4-4 major-suit fit.

But when South denied a major, North sensibly went for three notrump -- even though this was one of those rare deals in which five of the minor, despite being only a 4-4 fit, can be made if declarer reads the deal well, but three no-trump ought to fail.

Often at trick one, East would encourage with such a good club holding. However, his three will not look high to West. (Those of you who employ upside-down signals, when your two would be encouraging, might be nodding happily, but that is still not the best play in my opinion.)

East should make everything crystal clear by winning with his ace and returning the queen. Then when West gets in with the spade king, he will cash the rest of the clubs.

Yes, even if East plays the club three (or, much better, the queen) at trick one, West might find the winning defense. But East should want to make life easy for his partner.

O

n the morning I was to meet Harlow “Bud” Swartout, I arrived at the Culver’s in Woodstock, wondering if the 88-yearold was already there.

I noticed a 2001 gold Buick Century parked with its right back tire ever so slightly over the line. A Blue Streaks license plate holder framed a plate that read “BIO BUD.” I found Bud waiting at the door, wearing a blue Woodstock athletics track jacket and a blue hat with a white “W” on it. He smiled at me with his gentle eyes, which are also, fittingly, Woodstock blue.

Throughout four decades, the 88-year-old taught biology and coached football and track at Woodstock High School. He served as an assistant under five head football coaches, including Bob Bradshaw,

who said of Bud “I think he has a little Blue Streaks blood in his veins.”

Teacher and coach were Bud’s official titles. But with every year, he added more unofficial duties.

When Woodstock needed someone to serve as an unofficial trainer, Bud volunteered and taped more ankles than he cares to count. When Woodstock needed someone to coach a junior high basketball team for a season, Bud volunteered. When the Blue Streaks needed someone to line the fields, Bud volunteered.

So when Woodstock started a wrestling program 50 years ago, they needed a scorekeeper. You know how this ends. Bud dragged a lab table from his second-floor biology classroom. He clocked the earliest matches with an old lab timer and kept score with flip cards.

Fifty years later, the coaches have changed. The scoreboard has been upgraded. Decades of players graduated.

But Bud continues keeping score.

“He loves students,” Woodstock wrestling coach Jon Grell said. “He loves sports. Above all, he loves this particular school.”

Since he has been a scorekeeper for 50 years, and newspapers like round numbers, it seemed like a good time to catch up with Bud over lunch.

Summing up a person’s 88 years is difficult.

The first 88 seconds I knew Bud taught me plenty. It was during this time that he tried to persuade me to write the story about someone else, going as far as to offer a few suggestions.

When I insisted, he offered to buy me lunch. This time he insisted. I ordered a hamburger.

“What are you on a diet?” Bud said. “Get a basket.”

Our bill came to $8.42. Bud paid in cash with exact change and we took our seats in a side booth.

*** I quickly learned that Bud is the type of person who can turn a fast-food lunch into a two-hour visit.

During that first visit, his life unfolded through a series of stories about the Army, the coaches he worked alongside, his two children and five grandchildren and his late wife JoAnn. He talked of Crystal Lake coach Owen Metcalf and McHenry’s Leonard McCracken, Dan Horne at Harvard. Al Bohrer from Cary-Grove.

To young people or to outsiders, like myself, the names are recognizable only because many of the fields in the area have been named in these legendary coaches’ honor.

Bud knew the people and shared stories about all of them, including this one about Woodstock’s Larry Dale.

MINNEAPOLIS — Lost amid all the pomp and circumstance, and the halcyon memories evoked by the alumni game, and all the jokes about how the Blackhawks play in an outdoor game every year, was the fact that Sunday’s game between the Hawks and the Minnesota Wild actually counted for two points.

Two points that could be crucial for the Hawks as they try to hold off the Stars and Blues for the Central Division title.

Two points that are even more precious to the Wild, as they try to claw back into the playoff picture after a miserable winter that cost coach Mike Yeo his job.

“We’re in a tight race at the top of the Central, so any points you can get are needed, and every game is meaningful,” Patrick Kane said on Saturday. “We’ve got to be aware of that.”

Aware? The Hawks were barely awake.

The Hawks fell completely flat in one of their more miserable efforts of the season in a 6-1 loss to a hyped-up Wild team playing its first outdoor game. The Hawks are now 1-3 all-time

outdoors, their lone win coming in 2014 at Soldier Field.

“We try to view it as another game, but at the same time, we wanted to be better than we have been in these outdoor games, especially when the NHL kind of keeps counting on us to play in them,” Kane said after the loss. “It’d be nice to end up on the other end. But today was obviously a tough one.”

That’s putting it mildly.

It was an idyllic atmosphere in the self-proclaimed State of Hockey, with TCF Stadium on the campus of the University of Minnesota packed with 50,426 fans on a crisp 35-degree day. There was even a brief snowfall in the first period for effect. But from the opening faceoff, it appeared that only the Wild were into this one. The Wild were on the attack, crashing the net and chasing down loose pucks, blowing past Hawks defensemen with ease.

The Hawks, meanwhile, barely got out of their own zone. And when they did, they were one-and-done every time, losing nearly every race, every puck battle.

“We just needed to come out with a little more jump, especially in an atmosphere like this in front of the big home crowd,” Trevor van Riemsdyk said.

“We were excited, too, but we should

have been a little bit better prepared.”

It was a poor effort in a season that, despite their best-in-the-West record, has become alarmingly common. And the Hawks were quick to dismiss a busy schedule and Thursday’s White House visit as factors.

“Definitely no excuse to play the way we did,” said Corey Crawford, who was pulled after letting in four goals on 23 shots through two periods. “It was a little embarrassing out there, to be honest. To have our fans come and watch that, it was definitely a tough one to swallow.”

The Hawks were never in it. Matt Dumba scored 3:25 in, as a costly Brent Seabrook pinch led to a Ryan Carter rush, which Dumba followed up on after Crawford made two initial stops.

Thomas Vanek added a power-play goal after an ill-advised Phil Danault retaliation on a clean hit by Dumba on Andrew Desjardins.

The Hawks then had a goal waved off for goalie interference, as Jonathan Toews brushed Wild goalie Devan Dubnyk before Duncan Keith put the puck in the net. That was the lone sign of life the Hawks had, as Minnesota put the game away in the second period on goals by Nino Niederreiter and Jason Pominville.

Hamlin uses daring move to win 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – With a Hail Mary move, Denny Hamlin ended Joe Gibbs’ 23-year drought at the Daytona 500.

Hamlin pulled out of line with a lap to go Sunday to make a run at his first Daytona 500 victory.

He chased down teammate Matt Kenseth, staved off Kenseth’s block, and wedged between Kenseth and Martin Truex Jr. Hamlin stayed in the gas for a door-to-door dash to the checkered flag that ended in a photo finish with Truex. He beat Truex by 0.01 seconds, the closest finish in the history of the race.

“I don’t know where that came from, I don’t know what happened, I can’t even figure out what I did,” Hamlin said. “It all just came together. But this wouldn’t be possible if it wasn’t for Toyotas sticking

together all race long.”

Hamlin, Kenseth, Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards stuck close together for most of the race, and they got assistance from Martin Truex Jr., who became a de facto JGR teammate this year when Furniture Row Racing moved to Toyota.

Kenseth was out front and leading Truex until the final lap when Hamlin finally jumped out of line to make his attempt at the win. Starting a second line on the outside, Hamlin got a push from Kevin Harvick that allowed him to catch Kenseth. Kenseth tried to throw a block, but Hamlin wedged into the middle between Kenseth and Truex, and Kenseth had to save his car from wrecking.

“The last thing I wanted to do was wreck off Turn 4 with my Toyota teammates and none of us win,” Hamlin said. “We had talked about a plan overnight to just work together, work together, and I’ve never seen it executed so flawlessly.

Second-half surge propels Wisconsin past Illinois

MADISON, Wis. – Ethan Happ had 20 points and 12 rebounds, and helped spark a 17-0 run that allowed Wisconsin to roar back from a double-digit deficit in the second half of a 69-60 win Sunday night over Illinois.

Happ, an athletic 6-foot-9 freshman, had three steals during the decisive run for the Badgers (17-10, 9-5 Big Ten), who avoided a potentially damaging loss to their NCAA tournament resume.

Wisconsin rallied from a 13-point deficit with about 12 minutes left. It was the team’s best comeback win since overcoming a 15-point deficit in the second half at home to unbeaten and No. 1 Ohio State on Feb. 12, 2011.

Nigel Hayes scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half after being held without a field goal in the first half.

Bulls beat Lakers to spoil Kobe’s Chicago farewell

CHICAGO – Derrick Rose and E’Twaun Moore had 24 points apiece Sunday night to lead the Bulls to a 126-115 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in Kobe Bryant’s final game at the United Center.

Moore, who was 10 for 14 from the field, tied his career high. Pau Gasol had 21 points, Mike Dunleavy and Bobby Portis each scored 17 and Doug McDermott added 16 as the Bulls won their second straight.

Bryant finished with 22 points on 8-for-20 shooting in 27 minutes. Julius Randle also had 22 points and Jordan Clarkson added 20 as Los Angeles dropped its fifth in a row.
