Site teaches history of John Deere Rick Trahan, the blacksmith at the John Deere Historic Site in Grand Detour, recently posed a question to my husband and I: “What would John Deere say if he was run over by a tractor?”

Do not be embarrassed if you do not know the answer. We did not know, either. The answer: “He would say, ‘what was that?’ ” This was Rick’s whimsical way of pointing out a lot has changed since John Deere moved to Illinois in the 1830s. The surprising fact is John Deere had been dead for decades before his namesake company started building tractors. But the more impressive implication is what John Deere started is still going strong almost two centuries later.

If you did not know it was there, you might drive by the John Deere Historic Site on Route 2 about 35 miles south of Rockford and not pay much attention.

Yet this place draws guests from all over the country. When we were there, our tour group included a farmer from northeastern Texas who had driven to visit the factory in Moline, were his new, state-of-the-art tractor was being built specially for him. Another guest came from Michigan with his wife and knew more about blacksmithing than any most people in the 21st century would know.

Among other things, the site offers an opportunity to see the home John Deere built for his wife and five children. On the other side of the large grounds is a building that covers the archeological site created when the location of his original workshop was unearthed. (Stay for the short movie they show there. It is worth it.)

Just a short walk down the path is the recreated blacksmith shop where Rick Trahan teaches while entertaining.

This is definitely the highlight of the tour. Not only does Rick give you some interesting information mixed in with his witticisms, he also demonstrates the art and skill of creating many things out of a simple rod of steel. “See this rod?” he asked. “Right there at the end of it there is a tree leaf just crying to get out.”

Over the next 10 minutes, you watch while he proves himself right.

So if it was not a big green and yellow tractor that made John Deere famous and rich, what was it? The plow, which sometimes was called the “singing plow” because it cut through the virgin soil of the prairie without getting bogged down. What came to him in a moment of inspiration while doing repairs on a saw mill was a major turning point in the history of agriculture and the history of

It was a fun tour, to be sure, and a good deal at $5 a person Of course, we worked up an appetite.

We had Dixon in our sights and did some investigating of the restaurants.

We learned there are two white tablecloth restaurants in town that are spoken of highly by local folks: an Italian restaurant named Basil Tree Ristorante and a Hungarian restaurant named Öröm. Neither of them serve lunch on Saturdays, but we did have a chance to meet chef Mark Framke of Öröm and learn about some of the unique fare that he puts on the dinner table.

That particular evening the menu featured Chicken Paillard (a dish of chicken with tomatoes, capers and olives served with roasted potatoes), Ducka Ducka (a seared duck breast with cherry gastrique and polenta), filet mignon with bordelaise sauce, and the fresh fish of the day. Chef Framke explained that in Hungarian, Öröm means joy or pinnacle, and I have no reason to doubt the food he cooks is true to both of

those words.

We ended up having lunch at Touch of Thai, also on First Street. No white table clothes here, just casual seating and a waitress who was sincerely interested in making our lunch a happy occasion.

Although I claim no expertise in food from Thailand, I really enjoyed my Pad Woon-Sen made with glass noodles, and my husband loved his Panang Curry with very tender and tasty beef.

So, when you are done with the spring plowing, head to Grand Detour.

The John Deere Historic Site is open from May to October, but group tours can be arranged during the winter months. Schedule one at 815-652-4551.

Chicken high in flavor

The Associated Press A chicken Parmesan that’s big on flavor, but not on fat is easier – and quicker – than you might think.

I started with a basic breaded and baked chicken breast. For speed, I cut the breasts into thin cutlets. And that speed isn’t just a convenience. It also pays dividends on texture. The less time the chicken spends in the oven, the more tender and moist the end result.

For a crunchy coating, I kept it simple – panko breadcrumbs. Dunk the chicken in some egg, drag it through the breadcrumbs and you’re ready to move on.

While the chicken bakes, the sauce comes together in just minutes on the stovetop. I used puttanesca – the fast and flavorful pasta sauce – as my inspiration.

A few high-flavor ingredients pull it all together in no time. And with a lot less of the usual fat that clogs this dish. We do finish it with Parmesan cheese, but the sauce is so flavorful already, a little goes a long way.

Chicken Puttanesca Parmesan Start to finish: 30 minutes Servings: 4

2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts 1 egg 1 cup panko breadcrumbs 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 tablespoon olive oil 4 to 6 oil-packed anchovies 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes

1 large yellow onion, diced 2 Roma tomatoes, cored and chopped 1/2 cup chopped pitted Kalamata olives 4 cloves garlic, minced 2 tablespoons capers 5 large leaves fresh basil, chopped 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese Heat the oven to 400 degrees F. Coat a baking sheet with cooking spray.

One at a time, carefully slice each chicken breast in half horizontally to create two thin halves.

Place the egg in a wide, shallow bowl. In a second bowl, mix together the breadcrumbs, garlic powder, salt and pepper.

One at a time, dunk the chicken cutlets first in the egg, then in the breadcrumbs, pressing as needed to adhere them to the meat. Arrange the breaded cutlets on the baking sheet, then mist the tops with cooking spray. Bake for 20 minutes, or until lightly browned.

Meanwhile, in a large skillet over medium-high, heat the oil. Add the anchovies and red pepper flakes, then saute until the anchovies have dissolved. Add the onion and saute for 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes and bring to a simmer. Cook just until the tomatoes begin to break down, about 5 to 7 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the olives, garlic, capers and basil. Season with salt and pepper.

When the chicken is done, transfer each cutlet to a serving plate. Spoon the sauce over each, then top with Parmesan.

Alden church celebrates 150 years United Methodist congregation came together in 1863 to build historic building

Unincorporated Alden, at the junction of Route 173 and Alden Road, may seem like little more than a wide spot on the road.

But those who think that are missing out on a lot of important county history.

The area, supplied by good water from the northern branch of the Nippersink Creek and plenty of timber along its banks, was settled in 1836. It was a superb place for pioneer farmers from New York to settle.

An old Native American trail stretching west from what would be Kenosha, Wis., (originally Southport) to Rockford – Route 173, formerly referred to as the Chemung and Southport Road – allowed for relatively easy access to Lake Michigan transportation. By 1861, the Kenosha, Rockford and Rock Island Railroad (later the Chicago & North Western Railroad) laid its rails through the Alden settlement and built a small station that still stands.

The coming of the railroad was the impetus for the construction of a school, a grain elevator, a stock yard and a church – all proud symbols of a prosperous, growing community.

In the same year the railroad came to Alden, Methodists who once worshipped in the home of early settler Asahel Disbrow believed the growing village needed a place to be used specifically as a house of worship.

“They’d start up United Methodist churches in homes and in class meetings and then grow and grow. After 30 years of meeting in homes, they raised enough money to have their own place,” the Rev. Diana Otterbacher said.

Otterbacher was the longest tenured pastor at the Alden Methodist Church, serving there five years as a seminary student then called back four years later. Otterbacher ministered there for 11 years until 2011 before moving to Hampshire’s Zion United Methodist Church. Most of the clergy have come and gone in one or two years.

“Alden was very good rolling with the punches,” Otterbacher said. “It got started back in the day of the circuit riders. … Circuit riders would come around once a month to administer the sacraments, do weddings and baptisms, and make sure everything was in good order. But the beauty of the Methodist movement was its focus on lay leaders and lay leadership.”

So when yet another rookie preacher arrived after a year or two, it was no big deal. The congregation pitched in, showed the new kid the ropes and moved forward.

“A lot of congregations wouldn’t want that.

But I think that is why we held together,” said Bobette Von Bergen, a member of the church for more than 60 years. “We were family. I was married in that church. Our kids were baptized in the church.”

Construction started in 1861 along the north side of Southport Road, a few lots west of the old north-south trail and what would become a military road to Lake Geneva (now Alden Road). Just as the building’s frame was complete, high winds

The Alden Methodist Church was completed in January 1863. Improvements were made to the facility throughout the years, including a Sunday School room on the west side of the church in 1914. In the 1930s, Alden Methodist women would serve either chicken and biscuits or turkey dinners. The ladies raised the chickens/turkeys, cleaned them, cooked them and served them. They also created items for the bazaar, made candy if they had children in Sunday School, grew garden vegetables to sell and prepared and performed in a skit.

After a railroad excursion to the campsite of the newly constituted 95th Illinois Infantry (composed mainly of men from McHenry and Boone counties) and an 1862 tent revival, enough money was raised to allow for a reconstruction of the church’s frame and the completion by January 1863.

On Jan. 14, 1863, numerous horses and buggies filled the frozen road outside while almost 100 people were greeted inside the new church by the church’s Ladies Aid and Missionary Society (established as early as October 1860). The dedication of the church was a joyous occasion.

By 1880, the Big Foot Methodist Episcopal group had joined the Alden group, bringing the church’s membership to 193. In 1882, a Sunday school for children was established, where more than 75 children learned it was a bad idea to drink

alcohol, dance or gamble.

In 1913-14, a large room was added to the west side of the church to be used as a dining hall. Later, kitchen equipment was added in the basement of the church along with an oil furnace. Since 1951, numerous small improvements have been made to the building.

Von Bergen acknowledged the congregation is aging. “There is not enough young people in our church to make it grow,” she said.

Nine-year member Margo Van Dan estimated of the 80 congregants, no more than 30 are active. But they get by on sheer determination, she said.

“There is just barely enough of us to keep paying for it,” Van Dan said.

Walking into the building brings one back into a time when a majority of Americans lived in small villages and trusted deeply in God and the future. Sitting in one of the pews, one gets a sense village life in late 19th century America was generally a pleasant and tranquil time when a rosy future awaited. The building’s survival engenders that feeling.

The church’s congregation will celebrate the building’s sesquicentennial (150 years) Saturday.

The building will be open for inspection from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. All McHenry County residents are invited to stop in, feel the energy the historic old building emanates and add their own presence to the history of the building.

Many of the church’s former pastors will be there as well. They will share memories, laughs and a little fellowship over fried chicken from Crandall’s Restaurant in Hebron. And it’s all free to the public “It’s our celebration,” Van Dan said. “They’ve always said the Methodists started eating with Jesus at the last supper. We’re continuing it.”

Former Crystal Lake man creating album for others with the disease

Two years ago, Jim would be playing some tunes he wrote using his favorite chord progressions, or he would be writing a song for a special family occasion.

Now that Jim has ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, he no longer can play the piano, nor can he write down the music he hears in his head. His disease, however, has not stopped the music in the Stupars’ home.

The couple, who grew up in Crystal Lake and attended Crystal Lake High School, are working with Jim’s cousin, Bryan Harris, to create an album comprised of music created by those who have been diagnosed with ALS. They are calling it the ALS Musicians Collaborative Album and will release it on iTunes. Proceeds will go to the Les Turner ALS Foundation.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease, afflicts about 35,000 Americans. It typically leads to death within two to five years as the body loses its ability to speak, walk, swallow and breathe.

Researchers have been unable to find a cause, or a cure – just treatments that can prolong life and ease symptoms.

Jim, 55, and his cousin hope the album will be released early next year. The album will be linked to Jim’s website, www.doesthemusichavetostop.org. The website also aims to raise money for research of the disease – and as Jim said, “to glorify God.” Without his music, faith and a positive attitude, Jim said, he likely wouldn’t get out of bed in the morning.

Jim, who once traveled extensively for his job at Hollister Inc., now stays at home being cared for by his wife, although he continues to contribute to Hollister, he said.

Today, he is having trouble breathing and cannot move his hands or walk, but he still can talk about his music and tell jokes, calling himself a sack of potatoes as he gets lifted out of his wheelchair.

In August 2012, Jim began having signs – little signs – that something was wrong. He was losing weight, and his grasp felt weak. Doctors told him to eat more. But the symptoms got worse. He found he was unable to carry a 15-pound briefcase while in Germany on a business trip.

Although Jim and Kathy suspected he had ALS, it wasn’t confirmed by the Mayo Clinic until March. About three months earlier, Jim had played a song on the piano he wrote for his granddaughter, Sofie’s baptism.

That day, Kathy thought to herself, “Will the music stop?”

Today, she believes that will not happen.

“Though Jim can’t actually play the music anymore, so much of what he wrote and played

will be heard for the first time – by more than just one or two family members,” Kathy said.

Their son, Ben Stupar, 33, is helping Jim go through old cassettes that contain snippets of songs Jim has written and performed. Ben is digitizing the music, and a few are already up on the website. Several will go on the album his cousin is helping him create.

Kathy said the disease has brought Jim and their son closer.

“Ben comes every other weekend with his family (wife, Anne, and daughter, Sofie) to help archive the music. Jim traveled so much before.

It has become an opportunity to bond more with his son,” Kathy said.

Jim also has a CD he and his friend Tom DeCicco created in 1998, and some of that music also may be included in the album.

Recently, a musician from Batavia who has ALS found Jim’s website and said he was interested in adding his music to the collection.

“He shared his story – how devastated he was by not being able to play anymore,” Jim said.

Jim also met Dan Navarro from the country folk group Lowen and Navarro and discovered David Eric Lowen contracted ALS in 2004 and died in 2012. The duo is known for their song “We Belong,” made famous by Pat Benatar.

“Navarro has offered to let us use a few of their songs on the album,” Jim said.

While Jim talked, Kathy stood close to him, touching his arm and smiling. It hasn’t been easy, she said.

“Emotionally it’s been very difficult,” she said. “Jim’s progress is faster than we anticipated. We have to rely on our faith to get us through this.”

Special technology helps Jim work on his website. He sends emails by using a device that translates his speech.

“It’s incredible,” he said. “My total range of movement is 50 yards, but I can go anywhere with the Internet.”

The Associated Press When silica, soda and lime meet high heat, a beautiful alchemy occurs. The result – a taffy-like substance otherwise known as glass – has inspired creative minds for centuries.

Artists and craftsmen today often combine old-school techniques with new technology to create one-of-a-kind works of arts for the home.

Thor and Jennifer Bueno of Spruce Pine, N.C., are inspired by nature, and form hot glass into shapes evoking waterwashed rocks or molecular structures.

“Walking along a river, light bounces across the water’s surface,” says Jennifer Bueno.

Each sculpture is made by blowing and shaping molten glass into “pebbles.” The colors come from adding glass shards or powders. The piece is then baked to hardness,

sandblasted and given a protective luster; the result looks remarkably like a rock scoured by the action of a swift current over time.

In another series, the pebble shapes are made out of the mirrored material known as mercury glass.

“In its liquid state, glass glows with intense heat and moves slowly, as if self-propelled,” notes Bueno. “Mercury glass has the appearance of liquid metal, undulating and three-dimensional.”

Grandma crushed when she’s told to stay home Dear Abby: I recently found out that after 13 years of marriage, my son and daughter-in-law are expecting a child; my first grandchild. I was overjoyed at the news. They live about 1,000 miles away from me.

I mentioned to my son I have been looking at flights and want to come out a week before her due date so I’ll be there for the big moment, and stay three to four weeks to help with the baby. I was shocked when he told me they don’t want me to visit until at least three weeks after the birth, and stay for one week MAX. He said my daughter-in-law will need time to heal, and they both need time to adjust to being parents before they have guests. I am not a “guest.”

I am the grandmother. I also was told not to expect to take care of the baby because it is “their” job.

It hurts so bad not to be wanted to share in the joy of the new baby.

I have always dreamed of watching my grandchild take his or her first

breath, and see the look on my son’s face when he holds his child for the first time.

Is there anything I can do to change their minds and allow me to be there for my son at this important moment? Do you agree they are being unreasonable and cruel? – Family

They will be sleep-deprived, and she will be nursing every few hours and not up for company.

While you have always dreamed of being present at your grandchild’s birth, the reality is your son and daughter-in-law would prefer this

intimate moment be shared by them alone. I’m sorry you are hurt, truly.

Let them know you are willing to help them in any way you can on their terms, and take your cues from them.

Dear Abby: My grandmother died recently after a long life. A cousin decided all of the grandchildren should chip in for an expensive floral arrangement. I reluctantly participated after my wife said it would be “cheap” of me to refuse.

I had a closer relationship with grandma than most of my cousins did, but I felt it was an odd request. I have always understood flowers were sent to the grieving family. In this instance, we WERE the family. It felt like we were sending condolences to ourselves. Am I wrong, or was I just being cheap, as my wife suggested? –

Don’t let Krokodil distract from county’s problem drug There’s been some reports recently about a drug called Krokodil (Russian for crocodile), a drug that is made to imitate the effects of heroin, does a poor job and more or less rots you from the inside.

It is made from an opiate derivative that is easily and cheaply obtained in Russia and Eastern European countries, where heroin is scarce, and is manufactured using petroleum products such as gasoline, kerosene and/ or lighter fluid. It became

popular in those countries because of its low cost, the ease of obtaining ingredients and scarcity of the real thing.

Although no one is entirely sure how it works or why it affects people the way it does, regular use causes the skin to harden and turn an ugly, scaly green, thus the name.

After the hardening and color change, the skin falls off, leaving the large open sore that is the hallmark of this drug. It certainly sounds scary and makes one wonder

why anyone would use it. But then, one also might wonder why someone would use heroin.

The truth is, although there has been talk of a case in McHenry County and several cases elsewhere in the Chicago area, labs have been unable to verify any cases of Krokodil use. Having my ear to the ground with many former and recovering drug users, I have not heard of any use of this drug.

I think it wise we are

aware of what is out there, but my concern is limited for several reasons, not all of them good. First, the heroin supply is plentiful, so there’s little need for substitutes.

Second, we live in an area in which the funding of a drug habit is seldom problematic.

Third, the primary opiate ingredient in Krokodil is highly regulated here. Finally, any dealer selling the drug as if it were heroin would quickly lose his or her clientele.

I think it would be wise to

keep our eyes on the ball and continue to focus our efforts on the drugs that are most plentiful, most dangerous and most commonly used in our area. The drug that fits the profile at this time is heroin.

Heroin and prescription opiates are the drugs that are causing the vast majority of overdose deaths. Let’s not be distracted by the scary drug of the month.

rophies stand where the television once did at the Mussareds’ Richmond home.

Stop by, and music likely is playing as 14-year-old Georgia Rae saws away at her fiddle.

Head cocked, smile on her face, her fingers and arms move at twice the speed as the nearby dog’s wagging tail.

Sometimes, her mother, Ronilyn, plays along with her, strumming the guitar. She’s always listening.

“Georgia, you just went up a rung on the ladder,” she’ll say when she hears her daughter’s talent advance.

“And then she cries,” Georgia Rae added.

Music, specifically bluegrass, is the family’s passion, so much so that life pretty much revolves around it for the Mussareds.

The trophies represent Georgia Rae’s numerous wins at various competitions since she began playing the fiddle at age 5.

To prepare for her latest competition, the Illinois State Old Time Fiddle Contest, Georgia Rae asked to perform during lunchtime at Richmond-Burton Community High School. She attends part time and is home schooled the rest of the time so she can get in at least four hours of fiddle playing a day.

Performing in front of her peers makes Georgia Rae the most nervous. She wanted to confront those fears head-on.

“Some people booed me and talked over me,” she said. “I was really sad about it, but then going to state I forgot about it. And then I won.”

The teenager beat out adults in the competition, which has been won in the past by fiddle greats, such as Alison Krauss and Aaron Weinstein.

As the 2013 grand champion of the Fiddler’s Contest on Oct. 20, Georgia Rae now advances to the National Old Time Fiddler’s Contest in June in Weiser, Idaho.

The youngest to ever win that competition was 17.

“I’m not expecting to win,” Georgia Rae said. “I’m just going to go there and do my best.”

Just getting there in the first place was unexpected, Ronilyn Mussared said.

The mother knew her daughter one day would compete on a national level, just not that soon.

Still, she’s raised Georgia Rae, as well as her four sisters, with the attitude, “There’s nothing we can’t do if we just put our minds to it.”

That’s an attitude that has carried the family through some tough times, when money was tight and trips to the food pantry were necessary. To afford music lessons and the equipment, the family trimmed the budget as much as they could, giving up the television and other perks.

Ronilyn and Georgia Rae began playing music at nursing homes for $25 a gig. Soon,

the rest of the family joined in. Kelly Jo, 17, took on the role of lead vocalist as well as banjo, bass and washboard player, while 13-year-old Quin plays mandolin.

They became the Georgia Rae Family Band in 2011 and since have been performing throughout the area. Writing their own songs, the band has released two CDs at www.georgiaraefamilyband.com.

“Our hard times are blessings,” Ronilyn said. “You don’t see it right away. ...

“We’ll play for anyone who pays us.

It takes money to support this. They’re learning business, and I’m learning it with them,” she said of her daughters, who rise at 5 a.m. daily to get some band practice time in before school.

Just the traveling expenses to Idaho aren’t something the family can really afford. To help with the costs, Ronilyn set up a fundraising page at www.gofundme. com/4xgutk.

The idea is for the family to perform at various spots along the way home. Georgia Rae didn’t want to go without her sisters, having become so much closer to them since the family formed the band and stopped fighting over the television remote control.

“I really wanted my sisters to come along because they’re my support,” Georgia Rae said. “They’re also my best friends. I wouldn’t want to travel all that way without my best friends.”

They share a “common goal” that has brought them together, Ronilyn said.

Family conversations often become lyrics.

“They’ll say something, and I’ll say, ‘That’s a line for a song,’ “ Ronilyn said.

“Like, ‘It feels like a dream, and I never want to wake up,’ “ Georgia Rae added.

Easy-going and always happy as a child, Georgia Rae had the disposition to learn music and was born with the talent, Ronilyn said. She now gives as well as takes lessons, teaching a couple of 7-year-old students weekly.

A fan of Mumford & Sons – “If I think about them too hard, I start to cry.” – Georgia Rae said she wants to pass along the joy she feels when she plays. She enjoys classical music but loves how bluegrass allows her to play the way she feels.

With bluegrass, you can “step out of the box” a bit, as her mother encourages her to do.

“Even if I don’t get to do everything I love, I know I love playing music a lot more than going to dances and football games,” Georgia Rae said. “It’s always good to be different. People will ask, ‘How do you live without TV?’ I have music.”

And no matter what happens, Ronilyn said, they’ve already succeeded.

“We’ve got our health. We’ve got our music. We’ve got each other. We don’t need much more than that,” she said.
