Bravo, Hebron Village Board Trustee Drew Georgi. Thank you for standing up and showing us there is reasonable, responsible leadership in Hebron.

By now, you’ve heard the most recent tale in Hebron Village President John Jacobson’s growing list of drugs and alcohol incidents.

Jacobson was arrested on drug and firearms charges after police said they found cocaine, drug paraphernalia and a shotgun and ammunition at his home. Two of the charges are felonies. Jacobson was elected village president in 2013 despite facing crack cocaine charges during the campaign.

“If he doesn’t resign voluntarily, I’m going to try to get the other board members to restrict him, restrict his powers, limit him,” Georgi said, apparently defying some sort of unofficial gag order placed on trustees and the village

NEW YORK – Who needs algebra?

That question muttered by many students over the years has become a vigorous debate among American educators, sparked by a provocative new book that argues required algebra has become an unnecessary stumbling block that forces millions to drop out of high school or college.

“One out of 5 young Americans does not graduate from high school.

This is one of the worst records in the developed world. Why? The chief academic reason is they failed ninth-grade algebra,” said political scientist Andrew Hacker, author of “The Math Myth and Other STEM Delusions.”

Hacker, a professor emeritus at Queens College, argues that at most, only 5 percent of jobs make use of algebra and advanced math courses.

VILLAGE IMPROVEMENTS ON HORIZON Municipalities making plans to spruce up downtown areas

cswieca@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – When she was deciding whether to vote for a ban on large trucks in downtown Huntley, Ronda Goldman sat in front of Morkes Chocolates for an hour and counted at least 10 semitrailers driving down Main Street.

“It bothered me because not only did they kick up dirt from construction, but I started visualizing how much money we put into the curbs and started visualizing kids running across the street,” Goldman said.

The village trustee Ronda later voted for the Goldman restrictions, which narrowly passed in February. Goldman shared the concerns of trustees who said the ban would burden truck drivers but wanted to protect the $5 million investment the village had made in streetscape improvements in 2015.

Goldman said she took part in focus groups about residents’ visions for the downtown area before becoming a village trustee in 2013 and helping oversee the upgrades. While they’ve come at a high cost, she said it’s been worth it to fulfill the vision of a historic, family-friendly downtown area that residents shared nearly a decade ago.

Huntley’s downtown renovations were highly visible last year, but it’s not the only McHenry County municipality planning on sprucing up its downtown. Algonquin, Cary and Fox River Grove all are planning or considering improvements to their downtown areas.

But officials who support downtown changes said those areas can be vital economic drivers and contribute to the culture of a town by providing residents a space to live, shop and gather for special events.

McHenry County towns such as Crystal Lake and Woodstock already have thriving downtowns, and elsewhere in the region, towns such as Palatine and Barrington have used TIF districts to make downtown

upgrades over the past decade.

In municipalities where changes are being considered, however, officials said the goal is to emphasize the unique features of their towns rather than using others as a model.

As were Huntley’s, planned upgrades in Fox River Grove are Bob years in the making.

Nunamaker Village President Bob Nunamaker said he was inspired to run for office in 2009 after sitting on

the Fox River Grove School District 3 Board and realizing that Fox River Grove didn’t have many options to increase its tax base.

“With the state in financial trouble, to get the funding you need, you’re going to have to have more retail and more residents,” Nunamaker said. “That’s why I felt you needed to do it.”

CRYSTAL LAKE – The Rev. Jim Swarthout admits his life is unmanageable.

He said it’s probably the reason he got into helping people with addiction.

Swarthout, the clergy community director for Rosecrance McHenry County, is certified in intervention work. But unlike the confrontational family meetings depicted in popular TV shows, Swarthout’s interventions don’t come as a shock to the person who needs treatment. He’s been doing more of them recently as opioid addiction has shifted into a crisis.

Swarthout, 61, recently met with reporter Katie Dahlstrom to talk about his work and the state of addiction in McHenry County.

Dahlstrom: What do you think is the biggest misconception people have about addiction?

Swarthout: That there’s no hope. Ap-

Dahlstrom: Does that come from the addict or people looking in from the outside?

Swarthout: I think all of us at times.

When I was first ordained 30 years ago, I was burying young men left and right who were dying of AIDS, and we didn’t think there was any hope. Now, in the last five years, I’ve buried over 10 – 14 or 15, I think – who have died of overdoses or suicide because they have lost hope.

Dahlstrom: So, tell me about the interventions you do.

Swarthout: In the intervention work

the family members, we gather, we talk about addiction, about mental health, about their loved one. Then what we do is we invite the loved one for a meeting.

We don’t surprise. We don’t attack.

We call the loved one, we gather the board of directors – the family, and I appoint a director. The director calls the loved one and says, “We’d like you to come to a meeting Tuesday. And by the way, Aunt Mary, Uncle George, all these people are going to be there, and we would like you to come to this meeting, because we are concerned about you and your using.”

That loved one is going to say, “I’m not coming.” And we’re going to say to that loved one, “We hope you still come.

Because whether you come or not, we’re going to meet.” Because it’s not just your issue, it’s our issue.

agoodrich@shawmedia.com MARENGO – A Marengo-based construction company submitted the lowest bid for a project to eliminate two mobile classrooms in Riley Community Consolidated School District 18, an architect said.

Rockford-based Bradley and Bradley opened bids last week, finding the lowest came from Brackmann Construction Company for $927,333, said Usha Sundaram, vice president at Bradley and Bradley.

District 18 Superintendent Jim Davis said the board will come together for a special meeting to vote on the bid if members can coordinate a day and time.

“Our next board meeting isn’t scheduled until [April 21],” Davis said.

“If we schedule a meeting before then, we could vote on the bid and allow them to get busy.”

The project involves adding about 7,200 square feet on the north side of

rooms for upper elementary and potentially an art space, Davis said.

The mobile classrooms have been part of the one-school district for more than 20 years, board President Anita Mitchell said.

“We’ve had to put a lot of work in to make sure they’re safe for the kids,” she said. “This is sort of a looking-forward kind of project.”

Davis said he was pleased with the outcome of the bidding process, adding his hope was to keep the project to less than $1 million.

Illinois Jaycees to honor village resident with award

cswieca@shawmedia.com FOX RIVER GROVE – Village resident Joanna Colletti has been selected by the Illinois Jaycees as an honoree for its Outstanding Young Persons of Illinois awards program.

Colletti, who is being recognized in the category of personal achievement, volunteers with the Cary-Grove Jaycees and the Fox River Grove Lionesses Club.

Although Colletti has been working with the Jaycees since 2003, Joanne Rinaldo of the Joanna Illinois Jaycees said Colletti involvement with the group is not a prerequisite to win the Young Persons award.

“A lot of it is really just being an active citizen,” Rinaldo said.

Colletti, who was recognized as one of the Northwest Herald’s Best

Under 40 in 2012, is the water resources manager and chief stormwater engineer for the McHenry County Department of Planning and Development.

She sits on the Sustainability Committee for Illinois’ American Society of Engineers chapter and is a member of the Illinois Association for Floodplain and Stormwater Management and the Northwest Water Planning Alliance.

She previously served on Fox River Grove’s Village Board and Parks Commission.

“I love what I do and am thrilled that I can give back to my community in so many ways,” Colletti said in a statement.

Colletti, 39, will be honored along with six other honorees younger than 40 on May 14 at the Wyndham Springfield-City Centre in Springfield.

Work to begin soon on senior apartment complex If you go

hprokop@shawmedia.com RICHMOND – Plans for a $6 million, 22,000-square-foot senior apartment complex in the village are underway, and construction could start this spring, Lindsey Haines said.

Haines, project manager with Chicago-based Full Circle Communities, said the Creekview independent senior apartments are a needed development in Richmond.

“There just aren’t a lot of rental housing options for seniors, especially accessible units,” Haines said.

The building will have 25 accessible units, with four two-bedroom and 21 one-bedroom units at 5615 Liberty St., Richmond, Haines said.

Double units will cost about $800 a month, and single units will cost about $600 a month, she said. The apartments are for people age 55 and older.

The building will feature amenities including a computer lab, library, community room and property management office. On-site services such as trans-

The lot currently is vacant, Haines said. She said after the village has a public hearing and the rezoning of the property is finalized, officials hope to start construction by late spring or early summer.

Village President Pete Koenig said Full Circle Communities has presented the project to the Village Board before, and the demographics of the village make it a needed development.

A public hearing regarding the project will take place at the Richmond Plan Commission at 7 p.m. April 27 at Village Hall, 5600 Hunter Drive, Richmond.

Historical society needs help to assemble quilt for raffle

UNION – The McHenry County Historical Society will host “basting day” for its 2017 raffle quilt at 9:30 a.m.

ndy Lechner of McHenry spends his days working full-time for the city of McHenry and most of his free time at the ceramics studio at McHenry County College in Crystal Lake. He took his first ceramics class nine years ago and has been enrolled in a class every semester since.

Lechner is motivated by transforming the everyday object into something extraordinary. “All of my stuff is out of the ordinary,” he said.

His most recent work includes the addion of slip cast objects, such as skulls, animals and figurative forms.

His speciality is moonshine jugs in all different sizes and shapes. His work in the past couple years has won several awards, including Best of Show at a recent Old Courthouse Arts Center show in Woodstock.

In June 2014, Northbrook-based Gart Partners proposed a $250 million project to develop both sides of Route 14, including 90,000 square feet of retail space, 500 apartment units, a marina/restaurant and hotel. The Village Board approved a special-use permit for the first phase of the project, and Nunamaker said groundbreaking could happen this fall or next spring.

In other municipalities that are planning less extensive changes, officials said upcoming infrastructure changes made it logical to consider above-ground cosmetic changes.

The Algonquin Village Board recently heard plans for $30 million in potential downtown improvements and moved forward a $375,000 contract for engineering design on the first phase of the project.

‘Legends of the Fall’ author Jim Harrison dies at age 78

NEW YORK – Jim Harrison, the fiction writer, poet, outdoorsman and reveler who wrote with gruff affection for the country’s landscape and rural life and enjoyed mainstream success in middle age with his historical saga “Legends of the Fall,” died at age 78. Spokeswoman Deb Seager of Grove Atlantic, Harrison’s publisher, told The Associated Press that Harrison died Saturday at his home in Patagonia, Arizona. Seager did not know the cause of death. Harrison’s wife of more than 50

The versatile and prolific author completed more than 30 books, most recently the novella collection “The Ancient Minstrel,” and was admired worldwide. Historic Algonquin home needs rescuer Seemingly overnight, something of consequence can be recast as inconsequential.

Those of us with a few miles on the odometer know this all too well – be it at our workplaces or in the places where we live. Even the most iconic of structures that dot our downtowns can fall victim to whims of progress, the regimen of redevelopment.

It just happens to be Algonquin’s turn at this moment.

Recently, the village’s Committee of the Whole agreed to demolish the 1911 Franke House at 103 W. Algonquin Road – provided no one steps forward and is willing to relocate it.

The property was acquired as part of a larger redevelopment area featured in the village’s downtown study and tax increment financing plan. Nearby structures, also acquired under the auspices of the plan, were in worse shape and already were torn down.

The 4,000-square-foot house is a 2½-story American “Four Square” in the prairie style, with five bedrooms, a hipped roof, four dormers and a two-story bay window on the east side.

The home also features raised-panel doors and oak trim. It most recently housed a psychic.

The house was built by Christian “Christ” George Heinrich Franke, born April 4, 1863, in Baarz, Germany.

He immigrated with his parents to the U.S. on May 22, 1865, and settled in Algonquin. He went to school locally and studied carpentry in Elgin, before launching a successful business as a contractor. In 1894, Franke purchased a saloon from Jake Leonard and ran

LOCAL HISTORY Kurt Begalka that until 1912, when he opened a flour, feed, coal, coke, seed and salt business across from the then-Cary Station depot.

Eventually, Franke’s grandfather, Arthur, added lumber to the store’s inventory. C. Franke & Co. expanded in 1924, buying the former Borden milk factory, which it used as a warehouse to accommodate its expanding roofing, millwork and lumber business. The milk plant also had a railroad siding, useful for transporting hoppers of coal.

In the midst of the Great Depression, Franke Lumber & Coal survived a serious fire in May 1934 that destroyed the warehouse and caused about $15,000 in damage. A second fire broke out in November 1957 at Franke Lumber. Two large trucks and an estimated $40,000 worth of inventory were lost.

The business, which eventually changed its name to Franke Lumber Do-It Center, closed in 1994. At the time, it was the oldest family-run business in the county.

The Frankes also were highly respected in their hometown. Christ Franke served eight years on the Algonquin Village Board and two terms as village president – from 1913 to 1916 – before his death June 24, 1941.

Clarence Franke, the son of Christ and Augusta (Wallert) Franke, became Algonquin postmaster.

The Zange family later bought the prominent downtown house, using the

large garage to house Zange Decorating & Painting for about 50 years before the house was converted into an artist’s studio in the 1980s. The village used eminent domain to acquire the property as part of a larger area targeted for redevelopment, Community Development Director Russ Farnum said.

The village’s Downtown Revitalization Plan reserves the southeast corner of Main Street and Algonquin Road for a “new restaurant, retail and/ or service uses, with parking located to the rear of stores and shops.”

“Our preference has always been to save that house,” Farnum said.

“It is structurally sound and in good condition, but it sits on one of our key development sites downtown. Conceptually, there will be a mixed-use building [there] with multiple stories and retail on the main level.”

Algonquin gladly will give the house to someone, provided the new owner move it somewhere else. It will cost an estimated $48,000 to move the house two blocks; more if the lot is outside the preferred Old Town area.

“The expensive part is picking it up and setting it down,” Farnum said.

“If we had property to move it to and a use for it, we probably would just do it ourselves. We do want to save the house. … They wouldn’t even have to stay in Algonquin.”

Since the village would have to spend $16,000 to tear the historic home down, there is some room for negotiation when it comes to the required permits and fees. But there is one added complication. Thinking the village was preparing to tear it down, previous owner Dave Gervais removed some of

the architectural details for safekeeping – including cut-glass windows, trim and the newel post. All of those elements have been returned and are being stored by the village.

They simply need to be reattached.

“It would make a wonderful house for someone. It is a well-made house with a beautiful oak stairway,” Gervais said. It’s biggest drawback was basement flooding because of its proximity to the Fox River, but a move would rectify that.

“It would be better for the building if the building was moved,” Gervais said.

Proposals to buy and move the house are due by April 30. Applicants need to provide a descriptive plan and timeline for relocation, the property where the home will be relocated, its intended use, a minimum $2 million blanket liability insurance policy which names the village as an additional insured and proof of the financial ability to complete the project – among other things. Algonquin’s vision for its downtown includes “preserving and retaining buildings with architectural and historic interest.” My hope is that someone with vision backs up that belief and is willing to rehabilitate rhetoric into reality.

Supreme Court decision on Blagojevich appeal near

CHICAGO – Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich could soon learn whether the U.S. Supreme Court will hear an appeal of his conviction on charges of corruption that included an attempt to sell an appointment to President Barack Obama’s old Senate seat.

The 59-year-old Democrat had five of his 18 convictions thrown out in July 2015 and has asked the high court to overturn the remaining ones. He Rod is currently serving a 14Blagojevich year prison sentence.

The Supreme Court justices deliberated Blagojevich’s petition Friday during a weekly case conference, the Chicago Tribune reported Sunday.

The court typically issues orders on the Monday after deliberating a petition.

Decisions to not consider such petitions are usually noted without explanation.

In an 83-page filing, Blagojevich argues that the line between the legal trading of political favors and bribery has become muddled, potentially exposing politicians everywhere to criminal charges.

Inmates get creative in drawing attention to cases

CHICAGO – Inmates in Illinois and their supporters are getting creative in their bids to draw attention to their cases.

Emanuel rejects 3 finalists for police superintendent Selects chief of patrol to serve interim role

CHICAGO – Mayor Rahm Emanuel has rejected three finalists recommended by the Chicago police board for the city’s top police post and selected the force’s current chief of patrol as the new interim police superintendent, City Council officials said Sunday.

Emanuel is trying to replace Superintendent Garry McCarthy whose firing was part of a frantic effort to regain trust in the police department and his own leadership following the release in November of dash-camera footage showing a white police officer fatally shooting an unarmed black teenager 16 times.

Alderman Anthony Beale said the mayor’s office called him Saturday to inform him that Emanuel has selected Chicago Chief of Patrol Eddie Johnson as interim superintendent. Johnson, who is African-American and a 27-year veteran of the force, was not among the board’s recommendations. A former commander of the Gresham police district on the South Side, Johnson was promoted to deputy chief of patrol in 2012 and chief of patrol in December.

“While I supported the nomination of Gene Williams, I believe Eddie Johnson is equally suited to lead the Chicago Police Department and I support Mayor Emanuel’s decision,” said Beale, a former chairman of the City Council’s police committee. “Eddie Johnson knows Chicago, he knows the police department and the challenges facing our neighborhoods. He is a true leader and will bring the fundamental changes CPD needs right now. I look forward to getting to work with Eddie right away.”

Whoever leads the Chicago Police Department will take over during a time of immense turmoil marked by protests over police shootings.

Anabel Abarca, a spokeswoman for Alderman George Cardenas, a prominent member of the Chicago City Council’s Latino caucus, also told AP Sunday that Emanuel reached out to the alderman with news of Johnson’s selection.

Cardenas and Hispanics on the council had expressed frustration that the police board had passed over current Interim Superintendent John Escalante, who is Hispanic and has been running the department since McCarthy’s firing. Escalante has said he applied for the job. The AP emailed Escalante’s spokesman asking for his comment, but did not get a reply Sunday.

Emanuel’s spokeswoman Kelley Quinn declined to comment on whether Johnson is the mayor’s pick, but said he has made a decision and has informed the three nominees. She said Emanuel would announce his decision within days.

“While each of the finalists had strong qualifications, the mayor did not feel that any of them were the complete package that Chicago needs at this time and thus none were offered the position,” Quinn said. “The

mayor called each of them individually late Saturday to let them know of his decision.”

A city ordinance allows Emanuel to appoint an interim chief and ask the police board for a new list of finalists.

One of the board’s initial nominees, Cedric Alexander, told the AP on Sunday that Emanuel offered him the job Thursday during a meeting in Washington, D.C., and the mayor told him he intended to make Johnson his first deputy. But he said Emanuel phoned him Saturday night to say he had changed his mind.

“He did offer me the position in D.C. on Thursday, and last night he called and said he’s going in a different direction,” said Alexander, the public safety director in Georgia’s DeKalb County.

NBC5 in Chicago first reported that Alexander said he’d been offered the position.

Alexander told AP the plan had been for him to fly to Chicago on Monday and that the announcement was to have come Wednesday.

“I would like to thank the Chicago Police Board for giving me the opportunity to apply,” Alexander said. “Clearly the mayor is going in another direction, and I would just like to wish the very best for the people of Chicago.”

Pope recalls victims of ‘blind, brutal terrorism’

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis tempered his Easter Sunday message of Christian hope with a denunciation of “blind” terrorism, recalling victims of attacks in Europe, Africa and elsewhere, as well as expressing dismay that people fleeing war or poverty are being denied welcome as European countries squabble over the refugee crisis. Tens of thousands of people patiently endured long lines, backpack inspections and metal-detecting checks Sunday to enter St. Peter’s Square. Under a brilliant sun, they listened to Francis deliver the traditional noon Easter speech from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.

To their delight, Francis completed a whirl through the square, made colorful with sprays of tulips and other spring flowers, in his opentopped pope-mobile after celebrating Mass on the steps of the basilica. He leaned over barriers to shake hands, as the vehicle ventured past the Vatican’s confines, with his bodyguards jogging alongside on the boulevard.

In Jerusalem, the cavernous Holy Sepulcher church – where Christians believe Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected – was packed with worshippers commemorating the day they believe Jesus was resurrected in Jerusalem about 2,000 years ago.

For years, Islamist extremists in social media have listed the Vatican and Rome as

potential targets because of hosting the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church and several basilicas. Despite the threats, Francis has kept to his habit of trying to be in close physical contact with ordinary people.

Francis said he prayed that the Iraqi people would, in response to the attack, “be strengthened in their resolve to reject the ways of hatred and conflict to work together’” for a future of mutual respect and freedom.

In his balcony speech, Francis said Easter “invites us not to forget those men and women seeking a better future, an ever more numerous throng of migrants and refugees – including many children – fleeing from war, hunger, poverty and social injustice,” he said.

Dozens killed in Easter park attack Pakistani Taliban faction claims responsibility

The Associated Press ISLAMABAD – A bombing on Easter Sunday killed 65 people in a park in the eastern city of Lahore that was crowded with Christians, including many children.

A breakaway Pakistani faction of the militant Taliban group claimed responsibility. Ahsanullah Ahsan, spokesman for Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, told the Associated Press a suicide bomber with the faction deliberately targeted the Christian community.

The explosion took place near the children’s rides in Gulshan-e-Iqbal park local police chief Haider Ashraf said.

He said the explosion appeared to have been a suicide bombing, but investigations were ongoing.

The attack killed 65 people and wounded more than 300, said Deeba Shahnaz, a spokesman for Lahore rescue administration.

Punjab’s chief minister Shahbaz Sharif announced three days of mourning and pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice, said Zaeem Qadri, a spokesman for the provincial govern-

Another witness, Tariq Mustapha, said that he had just left the park when he heard an explosion. He said his friend was still missing.

Footage broadcast on local television stations showed chaotic scenes in the park, with people running while carrying children and cradling the wounded in their laps.

A witness, not identified by name on Pakistan’s Geo TV station, said he was heading toward a fairground ride with his wife and two children when he heard a huge bang and all four of them were thrown to the floor. A woman was shown crying while looking desperately for her missing 5-year-old son.

A spokesman for the U.S. National Security Council said that the United States “condemns the attack in the strongest terms,” describing it as a “cowardly act in what has long been a scenic and placid park.” Ned Price said the U.S. would continue to work with Pakistan and its partners to “root out the scourge of terrorism.”

BRUSSELS – Belgian riot police clashed Sunday with hundreds of right-wing hooligans at a temporary shrine honoring victims of the Brussels suicide bombings, as investigators launched fresh anti-terror raids, taking four more people into custody.

Police used water cannons when scuffles broke out in front of the Bourse, which has become a symbolic rallying point for people to pay their respects to those who died in Tuesday’s attacks. Black clad men carrying an anti-Islamic State group banner with an expletive on it trampled parts of the shrine, shouting Nazi slogans. Ten were arrested and two police officers injured.

“We had 340 hooligans from different football clubs who came to Brussels and we knew for sure that they would create some trouble,” Police Commissioner Christian De Coninck said. “It was a very difficult police operation because lots of families with kids were here.”

Brussels mayor Yvan Mayeur expressed his disgust, with Belgium still in mourning over the suicide bombings at Brussels airport and subway, which killed at least 31 people and injured some 270.

“The police were not deployed to protect people from these hooligans but a whole other threat,” said Mayeur told RTL television.

People trying to pay their respects were also dismayed.

“It was important for us to be here symbolically,” said Samia Orosemane, a 35-year-old comedian. But, she added, “there were lots of men who were here and doing the Nazi salute, shouting ‘death to Arabs’ and so we weren’t able to get through.”

“We are all here today for peace, and for the brotherhood among peoples. Not for right-wing ideas. It’s neither the time nor the place,” said Theophile Mouange, 52.

Federal prosecutors, meanwhile, said Sunday morning’s raids were linked a “federal case regarding terrorism” but did not specify whether it had any links to the

March 22 attacks.

Thirteen raids were launched in the capital and the northern cities of Mechelen and Duffel. An investigating judge was to decide later whether to keep the four in custody. Five were released after questioning.

Suspected plotters also were arrested Sunday in Italy and the Netherlands, though few details of their activity were released immediately.

Tuesday’s bomb attacks are also tearing at the fabric of the government, justice system and police, and Belgium’s interior minister sought Sunday to contain the growing criticism of the government’s handling of the tragedy.

Interior Minister Jan Jambon conceded Sunday that decades of neglect had hampered the government’s response to violent extremism.

He said the government has invested $670 million into police and security services over the past two years but that Belgium’s justice system and security services are still lagging behind.

State Department: 2 more American victims

WASHINGTON – Two more Americans have been identified as killed in the attacks on Brussels, the State Department confirmed Sunday, bringing the total number of U.S. citizens confirmed as victims to four.

Officials have said previously at least a dozen Americans were injured in the attack last Tuesday.

Thirty-one people were killed and 270 injured in the attacks Tuesday at the Brussels airport and a train station.

Syrian state media and an opposition monitoring group said government forces backed by Russian airstrikes have driven Islamic State fighters from the historic central town of Palmyra, held by the extremists since May.

DAMASCUS, Syria – Syrian government forces recaptured the ancient city of Palmyra on Sunday, scoring an important victory over Islamic State fighters who waged a 10-month reign of terror there and dealing the group its first major defeat since an international agreement to battle terrorism in the fractured nation took effect last year.

The city known to Syrians as the “Bride of the Desert” is famous for its 2,000-year-old ruins that once drew tens of thousands of visitors each year before IS destroyed many of the monuments.

The extent of the destruction remained unclear. Initial footage on Syrian TV showed widespread rubble and shattered statues. But Palmyra’s grand colonnades appeared to be in relatively good condition.

The government forces were supported by Lebanese militias and Russian air power. The Islamic State now faces pressure on several fronts as Kurdish ground forces advance on its territory in Syria’s north and government forces have a new path to its de facto capital, Raqqa, and the contested eastern city of Deir el-Zour.

International airstrikes have pounded IS territory, killing two top leaders in recent weeks, according to the Pentagon. Those strikes have also inflicted dozens of civilian casualties.

In Iraq, government forces backed by the U.S. and Iran are preparing a

ground offensive to retake the country’s second largest city, Mosul.

The fall of Palmyra comes a month after a partial cease-fire in Syria’s civil war came into force. The truce was sponsored by the United States and Russia in part to allow the government and international community to focus on al-Qaida styled militants, among them the IS group.

In comments reported on state TV, President Bashar Assad described the Palmyra operation as a “significant achievement” offering “new evidence of the effectiveness of the strategy espoused by the Syrian army and its allies in the war against terrorism.”

IS drove government forces from Palmyra in a matter of days in May and later demolished some of its bestknown monuments, including two large temples dating back more than 1,800 years and a Roman triumphal archway.

State TV showed the rubble left over from the destruction of the Temple of Bel as well as the damaged archway, the supports of which were still standing. It said a statue of Zenobia, the third century queen who ruled an independent state from Palmyra and figures strongly in Syrian lore, was missing.

Artifacts inside the city’s museum also appeared heavily damaged on state TV. A sculpture of the Greek goddess Athena was decapitated, and the museum’s basement appeared to have been dynamited, the hall littered with broken statues.

MADISON, Wis. – A trio of Wisconsin Republicans looking to inject the party with their own youthful, aggressive brand of conservatism ushered in the “Cheesehead Revolution.” Their aim was to position the GOP for success in the 2016 presidential election.

Then came Donald Trump.

With the anti-Trump movement in full swing even as Trump solidifies his front-runner status Donald in the presidential race, Trump the focus turns to the April 5 primary in the home state of those three heavyweights: House Speaker Paul Ryan, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus and Gov. Scott Scott Walker Walker.

They are trying to chart a course in the face of a revolt over Trump’s rise and what it means for the future of the Republican Party – and for each of them individually.

“The great plans came off the tracks with the presence of Donald Trump, both in terms of where the party would be and presidential ambitions,” said Democratic Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, who ran against Walker twice and lost both times. “Donald Trump changed everything.”

The “Cheesehead Revolution,” as Walker and Priebus dubbed it, began in 2011. With Ryan rising in the House, Walker a new governor, and Priebus taking over the party apparatus, the trio then represented what looked to be a unified party in a swing state that could become a GOP stronghold in presidential races to come.

But in 2012, Mitt Romney lost to incumbent Barack Obama, with Ryan as his running mate. Priebus tried to steer the party in a more inclusive direction.

In 2013, he issued the “Growth and Opportunity Project,” aimed toward an immigration overhaul and outreach to minorities, and driven by the recognition that Hispanics in particular were rising as a proportion of the population.

Now that tract is known as an autopsy report.

The recommendations put Priebus at odds with more conservative Republicans. And now, two of the three

remaining presidential candidates, Trump and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, have built their campaigns not on trying to broaden the party by reaching out to Hispanics and minorities, but by appealing to evangelicals and more conservative white voters.

Priebus’s report “has been haunting the Republican Party” ever since its release, said Steve King, an Iowa Republican congressman who backs Cruz.

“It’s awfully hard to recover from something like that,” King said.

Trump launched his Paul Ryan campaign by calling Mexican immigrants rapists and criminals.

He’s made a border wall a cornerstone of his platform. Those positions have torn at the party’s core, contributing to efReince forts to stop him.

Priebus Priebus puts the best face on the chaotic campaign. He said his party is large enough to handle a variety of opinions about the best course. He cites record fundraising and voter turnout. He calls it a “miracle turnaround.”

Ryan became House speaker in October, replacing John Boehner, and his stock has risen to a point that some Republicans see him as an alternative to Trump if the nomination isn’t settled going into the summer convention.

“Paul Ryan has brought about climate change there,” said King, meaning the climate in Congress, “and I mean that in a very complimentary way.” King is one of the most conservative members of Congress and was a critic of Boehner.

Just as he refused initial calls to run for speaker, Ryan has tried to tamp down talk of being drafted as an alternative to Trump at the convention.

Robin Vos, the Republican speaker of Wisconsin’s state Assembly, said Trump’s rise has helped to put the Republican Party at a crossroads. But Vos said he still believes Walker, Ryan and Priebus are in positions to “change the face of government.”

Vos pointed to Walker’s record as governor as proof that with a “good, articulate leader,” Republicans can advance their conservative agenda, even in a politically divided state like Wisconsin. Vos endorsed Cruz on Friday.

But Walker has been struggling with public support since his failed presidential run.

Scrap these 2 state fairs The governor wants a state fair. OK, let’s make that two fairs. Makes sense – we don’t have a budget, have no funding for higher education, billions in unpaid bills and a $111 billion unfunded pension liability. But the show must go on.

While we’re at it, let’s pour another $180 million into the Springfield and Du Quoin fairgrounds to bring them up to snuff. A sprinkler system for the horse barn? Sure, in another time and in another reality. Grandstand repairs, roof replacements and a fire-alarm system for the fairgrounds in Du Quoin? Definitely, if we were flush with cash and had reason to believe “our state fair’s the best state fair.”

We don’t. In 2008 the failure of an electrical system forced the Springfield fairgrounds to be closed for more than two months. Vendors from last year’s Springfield version of the fair haven’t been paid – to the tune of $1.5 million. Vendors from the Du Quoin edition haven’t been paid, either.

So much for the economic boon these events are supposed to provide.

When it comes to harness racing, butter cows, cotton candy and funnel cakes, the governor develops this weird version of financial amnesia.

According to Gov. Bruce Rauner, business as usual is bad – except when it comes to the fairs. According to the governor, passing funding measures for higher education is irresponsible because “we just don’t have the money.” But repairing and replacing the duct work at the fairgrounds in Du Quoin?

No problem. Let’s get it done.

The state fair link at illinois.gov proudly announces how many days are remaining until the Aug. 11 debut of the 2016 state fair in Springfield. That site has a functional “Vendors Wanted” button that includes the following instruction: “DO NOT send a deposit with your application. This is only an application; it does not guarantee a space will be offered. If a contract is awarded, payment and Certificate of Insurance will be due by designated deadline prior to the Fair.”

Get that? If you want to sell stuff at the fair, you have to pay the state up front. But if the state and their fairs want to do business with you? Just add it to their $1.5 million tab.

We don’t think so.

As Democrats and Republicans are both good at saying in reference to things they don’t like: It’s time to make some hard decisions. Let’s start with these: Scrap the $180 million fair infrastructure plan – for now.

Scrap the 2016 version of the state fairs – both of them. And do it now.

To the Editor: I have a strong belief about Syrian refugees entering Europe.

First, I understand refugees such as women, young children, elderly and disabled individuals need help.

However, I find it shocking young men between the ages of 18 and 39 are leaving their country and are considered refugees by the international community.

In most countries, young men would have to choose an army to join and fight for their homeland.

Why are all of these young healthy men allowed to live in Europe?

Our outrageous road projects To the Editor: The Algonquin Bypass is the four-

lane, 1.25-mile portion of Route 31 just west of downtown Algonquin.

For engineering purposes, roads are measured in lane-miles, so with the ramps, the whole project is about six lane-miles.

The cost was $88.5 million, or $14.75 million per lane mile.

The average cost per lane-mile to construct a new divided four-lane interstate in Illinois is $1.9 million for urban areas.

In other words, this road cost the taxpayers almost eight times the average to construct.

But the value of a road lies in how much it is used.

In 2015, the average daily traffic on the Algonquin Bypass was 12,650 vehicles. If you amortize the construction cost of the project over 20 years and divide by the number of vehicles, that’s $1.41 per vehicle or $1.13 per vehicle per

mile.

The Illinois Tollway charges an average of six cents per mile.

In other words, this project costs us, the taxpayers, almost 20 times what it should have for the vehicles that use it.

All of these facts were known when the McHenry County Division of Transportation spent millions of our dollars to justify this project to the state.

Sadly, this is not an isolated example. It is the norm for road building in McHenry County.

Let’s hope that with the results of the March 15 election, there will be significant changes in how the County Board considers road projects, such as the Algonquin/Randall interchange and the proposed Randall Road expansion.

Indeed, Hillary’s lead over Sen. Bernie Sanders is far greater at this point in the cycle than Obama’s lead over her in 2008. Despite his supporters’ near-heroic inability to face the arithmetic, those are the facts.

Sasson continues: “We never hear that Hillary Clinton has ‘momentum’ – what she has is a ‘sizable delegate lead.’ No one this cycle has described Clinton supporters as ‘fired up’ – it’s simply not possible that people are fired up for Hillary. No, what we gather about Clinton from the press is that she can’t connect. She has very high unfavorable ratings. People think she is dishonest and untrustworthy. She is not a gifted politician. She is a phony. Hated by so many.”

Hated, but winning handily. How can that be? Granted, there’s a lot of brutal rhetoric directed against Hillary Clinton from Sanders’ more impassioned supporters, many of whom appear ignorant of the fact they are recirculating propaganda fomented by the right-wing industry dedicated to slandering both Clintons for going on 25 years.

It was The American Spectator that first dubbed Hillary “The Lady Macbeth of Little Rock” – that is, an accomplice to murder – back in 1992.

Meanwhile, no less an authority than Jill Abramson, until quite recently the editor of The New York Times, essentially has conceded the newspaper never has given Hillary Clinton an even break.

In a remarkable interview in Politico, Abramson doesn’t quite admit Times-created “scandal” narratives from Whitewater through the current hullabaloo over her State Department emails have been somewhere between wildly exaggerated and pulp fiction, but she does talk about how “we ... expect total purity from a woman candidate.”

Abramson adds “where I think Hillary Clinton faces ... certainly more of a burden is that the controversies she’s been in are immediately labeled, you know, ‘travelgate’ or ‘emailgate’ ... if you actually asked people what about any of these controversies bothers them, they don’t know anything specific about any of them.”

Well, no kidding. In my experience of scandal monitoring, that’s because there’s nothing specific to know.

Some days, I wonder whether I’m qualified to express opinions about American politics anymore.

See, I’m not particularly angry, and I also doubt voters in general are any more worked up than usual. Voter outrage is mainly a media trope. Even at Donald Trump rallies, there’s a whole lot of sheer entertainment and play-acting.

Not that make-believe outrage can’t have actual, even deadly, results, but does anybody really believe Mexico will pay for Trump’s imaginary wall? Not really, but it makes people feel daring to play “let’s pretend.”

Sure, it’s a presidential election year, and people do get excited. However, people also work themselves into temporary frenzies over the NCAA basketball tournament, but everybody shows up for work after their team loses.

Thankfully, for most Americans, politics is a lot more like sports than civil war.

During Bill Clinton’s first term, I often suspected what really was bugging the Rush Limbaugh listeners was they spent so much time stuck in traffic.

Writing at Bloomberg.com, Jonathan Bernstein puts it this way: “My view is that Trump is doing well precisely because things aren’t particularly bad for the U.S. right now. In difficult times, voters take their responsibilities more seriously, and wouldn’t embrace the buffoonery of a reality-television star.”

After a posting on Mother Jones by the invaluable Kevin Drum that shows job openings and salaries rising, consumer optimism improving and gasoline prices way down, Bernstein adds that “the Obama years haven’t resulted in recession, soaring inflation or a foreign misadventure with major American casualties – in other words, anything that produces serious political reaction.

“Barring that, an entertainment version of politics has some appeal,” he writes. “And Trump puts on a good show.”

People do like a show. Not for nothing was Trump inducted into the professional wrestling Hall of Fame. Meanwhile, the feigned horror of establishment Republicans who sought Trump’s approval even as he flogged the absurd fiction of President Barack Obama’s birthplace in Kenya fails to convince.

Remember The Donald’s claim that private detectives he’d sent to Hawaii soon would bring back shocking evidence about Obama’s birth certificate? Never happened, of course, but it was left to the president himself to lampoon Trump to his face at the 2011 White House Correspondent’s Dinner.

Eric Sasson at The New Republic expresses similar skepticism toward the idea of angry, alienated Democratic voters. If people are so sick and tired of establishment politicians, he wonders, how come Hillary Clinton’s doing so well?

Hot flashes can be treated Dear Dr. K: I’m afraid to take hormone therapy for my menopausal hot flashes. Are there any natural remedies that work?

Dear Reader: Natural remedies can help for hot flashes, but hormone therapy is helpful more often. For that reason, I’ll come back to the pluses and minuses of hormone therapy after answering your question.

Obviously, you know what hot flashes are like. However, for any readers who may not, here’s a description. Hot flashes are brief but intensely uncomfortable feelings of warmth followed by drenching perspiration. They’re common during menopause, but not all women get them.

Hot flashes can be accompanied by heart palpitations, dizziness or weakness. They can cause sleepless nights, followed by irritability and exhaustion during the day. At their worst, they really can interfere with a woman’s life.

There are traditional medicines other than hormone therapy that can help with hot flashes. Several drugs that usually are used to treat depression give relief of symptoms for some women. These drugs include paroxetine (approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat menopausal symptoms), venlafaxine, desvenlafaxine, citalopram and escitalopram.

The fact these drugs can be helpful does not mean hot flashes are a sign of depression. Instead, the drugs likely alter the brain chemistry that generates hot flashes.

Three other traditional medicines that also affect the chemistry of the brain can give symptom relief. These include gabapentin, pregabalin and clonidine.

Several non-medicinal treatments (such as isoflavones, phytoestrogens and black cohosh) may help, although different studies have come to different conclusions. The same is true for acupuncture and hypnosis.

flashes less severe or less frequent that don’t require either traditional medicines or “natural remedies”: • Drink a glass of cool water at the beginning of a hot flash.

• Drink six to eight glasses of water a day.

• Plunge your hands in cold water and pat them on your face, neck and chest when a hot flash starts.

• Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which make hot flashes more uncomfortable.

• Cut down on red wine, chocolate and aged cheeses. They contain a chemical that can trigger hot flashes.

• Don’t smoke. Smoking can make hot flashes worse.

• Wear loose, comfortable cotton clothing.

• Dress in layers so you easily can remove some clothing if you suddenly feel hot.

• At night, use lightweight blankets that can be removed.

Let’s come back to hormone therapy.

Here’s the bottom line – at least for me – of a complicated story. The most effective medication for hot flashes is the hormone estrogen. If you are entering menopause – which typically occurs in a woman’s late 40s or early 50s – consider hormone therapy.

The exceptions: Avoid hormone therapy if you have (or are at high risk for) heart disease, stroke, breast cancer, liver disease or blood clots in the legs.

Our relationship is not only emotional but also physical. We are secretive about our relationship only with our children – we appear in public together, and my spouse knows about it. Many people at our regular venues comment on how much in love we seem to be.

Because you are so open about it, I’m surprised your children haven’t caught wind of it by now. Dear Abby: My wife and I are friends with a couple we have known for many years. When the four of us eat together, it’s obvious to me the husband directs the conversation toward my wife. Even when the topic is general in nature, his eye contact is with her to the point where it makes me uncomfortable. On a cruise last year, when we ate together regularly, I intentionally sat across from him and, sure enough, he talked diagonally across the table to my wife.

I always have made a conscious effort in mixed company to direct the majority of my conversation toward my male counterpart and not his wife. I feel it’s more appropriate.

Last week, we looked at auctions after one of a major was raised to two of that major. Mentioning a new suit now said that the bidder was too strong to pass, not strong enough to jump to game, and particularly wanted partner to look at his holdings in the bidder’s two named suits. This is called a help-suit game-try. It is a game-try because the partnership can still stop short of game.

But what happens when, say, one spade is raised to three spades, as in today’s deal? What do the opener’s rebids mean now?

There are three choices. If he has a minimum opening, he will pass. Most of the time, he will raise to game. Anything else suggests a slam. What would bidding a new suit promise?

There is a case for making this a help-suit bid also, but that is not the standard agreement. More traditional is that the bid shows a firstround control (ace or void) in the suit named and denies a first-round control in any suit skipped.

Why make one of these control-bids?

Usually because the opener has the values for a slam but holds two immediate losers in an unbid side suit -- here, in hearts.

So, South control-bids four clubs.

Then North does likewise with four hearts. This being music to South’s ears, he now uses some form of Blackwood before jumping to six spades.

What happens after West leads the diamond jack: queen, king, ace?

South must delay drawing trumps until he has cashed his three club winners and discarded dummy’s diamond loser. Then he leads a high spade from hand and claims when they break 1-1.

McHenry’s Braun enjoyed history-making senior season

cHenry senior Kevin Braun set out to make his senior swimming season his best yet, and although he fell short of his state-title aspirations, Braun reached many other milestones.

Throughout the season, he broke multiple school and pool records, including those of an Olympic medalist and some he owned. He qualified for the IHSA state meet with the fastest time in the 100-yard freestyle and the fourth-fastest in the 50 freestyle. He then finished his high school career with a pair of fourth-place finishes, swimming a 21.05 in the 50 free and 46.24 in the 100 free. Both were the best finishes for a McHenry boys swimmer at state.

For his record-setting season, Braun is the Northwest Herald Boys Swimmer of the Year, as voted on by the sports staff with input from area coaches. It’s Braun’s second consecutive year winning the award.

Braun, along with the other winners, local standouts and more, will be recognized at the Northwest Herald’s inaugural high school sports award show June 7 at the Woodstock Opera House.

Recently, he answered some questions about his senior season, his superstitions, the meal he ate the day after the state meet and more.

1. What did you change in your preparation that made this year special?

Just mentally my overall attitude.

I was so much more ready and really wanted to win, I guess. I was more motivated, too. In the pool, I focused a lot more on my technique. I worked harder in practice, and I started working out a lot more.

2. What was your daily training routine?

I’d wake up at 5, go to morning practice for an hour, go to school for seven or eight hours, right after have a two-hour practice and then go lift weights for another hour.

3. What was the best swim you had all year?

Probably my 100 free at Stevenson for sectionals. … I just felt really, really good. That was the meet I broke (six-time Olympic medalist) Matt Grevers’ 100 free pool record. It was just such a confidence booster.

4. What did you do the day after state?

I got a huge malt and a bunch of hot dogs – it was awesome – and just hung out with my friends.

5. At school, what’s your favorite subject when you’re not swimming?

Probably physics.

6. If you weren’t swimming, is there another sport you wish you were good at?

I’ve never thought about that. My life has just been consumed by water sports. It would be really fun to be good at basketball. Especially since I’m pretty tall, too.

7. Who’s the teammate you’ve been closest to?

Trey (Schopen).

9. What actor makes you always want to go see a movie if they’re in it?

Recently, Tom Hardy from “Mad Max” and he was Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises.”

10. Do you have any superstitions around your swimming or when you’re getting ready?

I kind of freak out when someone touches me or does anything to me.

I feel like if anybody touches me, my race will be ruined.

11. Do you listen to music before races, and if so, what?

I actually don’t really listen to music. I like to take it all in, the atmosphere of the pool.

13. What’s going to be your best memory looking back on your high school swimming career?

“Probably my sophomore year.

That was a really good year for our whole team. That was the first year Trey and I both qualified for state, and that was a super fun meet to see both of us do that, and everyone just had really good swims, too.”

14. Once school’s out, what are your plans for the summer?

In the summer, I want to get right back into swimming. Maybe train with my college team that I’ll be swimming with in the fall. Basically, I want to get a lot better in the summer.

Maybe get the Olympic trial cut, but, no, that’s probably too far out of reach.

15. Growing up in swimming did you have a hero or someone you looked up to?

Actually, my brother. He got me into swimming, and he really pushed me. He really helped me in swimming.

16. Were you competitive with him, and if so, what is the most competitive you guys get?

Oh, yeah, definitely. Probably the most competitive is when we’re playing (the soccer video game) FIFA.

Karsten has two homers this season after hitting only five in her previous three seasons. She also has eight multihit games this month for a team with the second-most runs in NSIC play this season (156) and the second-best team ERA (1.87).

The players who have helped Winona extend its streak of 35 wins or more for 14 consecutive seasons have been the highlight of Karsten’s career.

“That’s what I care about most,” she said. “I get emotional talking about it. That’s why I play the game, for the people who stand next to me and in front of me.”

Marsden makes his mark at NCAAs:

Oklahoma State senior Austin Marsden posted a career-best sixth-place finish at the recent NCAA wrestling championships to earn his second All-America honor.

Marsden, a Crystal Lake Central grad, finished 4-2 at nationals in the 285-pound class at Madison Square Garden in New York. For his career, Marsden posted a 108-22 record.

Richmond-Burton grad Jack Dechow, a junior at Old Dominion, finished 3-2 at 184 pounds. He finished the season 23-6 and was second in the Mid-American Conference in his weight class.

Zach Synon, a 133-pounder from Missouri, qualified for nationals for the first time in his career, finishing 0-2 in New York. Synon, a Prairie Ridge grad, won the MAC title in his class and posted a career-best 31-15 record this season.

Freeman shines again: For the third time in his track and field career at Southern Illinois, Cary-Grove grad Josh Freeman earned All-America honors at an NCAA national meet.

This month, Freeman placed seventh in the shot put with a toss of 63 feet, 7 inches, to earn first-team honors at the indoor nationals in Birmingham, Alabama. The senior became the 11th SIU athlete to earn back-to-back indoor All-America honors, and the first to accomplish the feat since the 1970s.

History at Benedictine: Huntley’s Zach Gorney helped D-III Benedictine University’s men’s basketball program to a historic run this season.

Gorney, a sophomore guard, played in 22 games for a team that advanced to the NCAA championship game. The Eagles (31-1) sustained their only loss of the season in Salem, Virginia, falling, 82-76, to the University of St. Thomas.

Gorney appeared in four of the team’s postseason games as the Eagles became the first undefeated team to play in a D-III national final since 1998 and the first men’s basketball team from the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference to advance that far.

Gorney averaged 1.8 points a game for the Eagles.

Beloit’s hot start: D-III Beloit College’s baseball team is off to a 7-3 start behind the efforts of several local players.

Junior infielder Kam Sallee (Huntley) is batting .325 with a teambest seven runs scored. He is one of two position players to start every game and has a team-high 13 hits.

The team’s pitching staff has produced an impressive 2.20 ERA. Senior left-hander Ryan Kaveney (Cary-Grove) has posted a 2.12 ERA in three appearances. He leads the team with 16 strikeouts over his 17 innings. At the plate, he hit a pinchhit, two-run homer with two outs in Beloit’s 8-4 victory March 12 in the finale of its spring trip to Florida.

Kaveney’s eighth-inning homer put Beloit ahead for good in the game. He has started twice as a position player and has driven in four runs with a .667 batting average.

Prairie Ridge’s Austin Padjen, a junior right-hander, is 2-0 as a starting pitcher with a 3.06 ERA in a team-high 172/3 innings. Padjen has allowed only 12 hits and opponents are batting .185 against him.

Sophomore right-hander Jamie Huntley (Woodstock North) has a 3.27 ERA in four appearances. He has one of the team’s two saves this season over 11 innings of work.

Success has been a constant in Marengo graduate Reed Karsten’s softball career.

The senior outfielder at NCAA Division II Winona (Minnesota) State University has helped her team win almost 78 percent of its games and two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament titles.

Last season, she won first-team all-conference and all-region honors by batting .399 with a school-record 23 doubles.

Despite Karsten’s impact on the Warriors, she doesn’t derive much satisfaction from all the Reed Karsten positive numbers.

“I haven’t been happy with how any of the years ended because we’re not at a World Series or winning a national championship,” she said. “No season has been a success.”

As a freshman in 2013, the Warriors lost in the NCAA Super Regional to eventual national champion Central Oklahoma.

“We were one game away (from the World Series),” said Karsten, who has started 191 career games.

“We were this close.”

Although they have been a fixture in the D-II national rankings the past three seasons, the Warriors were eliminated in the regional championship game in 2014 and went 0-2 in regional play last season.

“That’s the worst,” Karsten said.

“That bitter taste … it stays there.”

Karsten is doing her part again this season to help Winona “get over that hump” in the postseason.

The Warriors (19-6) are ranked 15th nationally, thanks to Karsten’s team-leading .398 batting average, 35 hits, two homers and 51 total bases.

Her contributions are based on a basic approach, she said.

“I’m just trying to play the way I play, and played the way I’ve been coached,” she said. “A lot of what (Marengo coach) Dwain Nance taught me, I still do today.”

That includes a focus on mechanics and playing with emotion, which is no stretch for Karsten.

“I try not to wear my emotions on my sleeve, but that’s just the player I am,” she said. “I love the competitive edge of it. I love when I’m tested, especially on defense. I love being

Syracuse crashes Final Four party Double-digit seeds in Final Four

Richardson scored 21 of his 23 points in the second half, and Syracuse extended its improbable run with a 68-62 victory over top-seeded Virginia on Sunday.

The Orange were among the last teams to get into the NCAA tournament after a rough closing stretch, but slipped in as a No. 10 seed before storming to their first Final Four since 2013 and No. 6 overall. It comes at the end of a challenging season for coach Jim Boeheim, who was suspended for nine games as the result of an NCAA investigation.

“It was a whole team effort, and these guys really deserve it,” Boeheim said.

PHILADELPHIA – Brice Johnson had 25 points and 12 rebounds to lead North Carolina to an 88-74 victory over Notre Dame on Sunday night, leaving the Tar Heels as the only No. 1 seed in the Final Four.

The Tar Heels reached the Final Four for a record 19th time and the first since 2009, when they won the last of their five national championships.

North Carolina (32-6) will face Syracuse, the 10th seed from the Midwest Regional, in another all-Atlantic Coast Conference matchup in the Final Four on Saturday in Houston. The Orange beat top-seeded Virginia, 68-62.

NOTEWORTHY JV girls programs going: While Huntley has started the area’s first varsity girls team, two other local girls teams are competing at lower levels. We didn’t include JV programs in our season preview, but their coaches provided some outlook for the young programs.

McHenry is in its second year with a girls team. Coach Dawn Turner said, “This year now

that we actually have a solid presence, it just has grown and I think it’s going to even grow more next year.”

The area’s newest program is the Hampshire co-op, made up of players from Hampshire, Jacobs and Dundee-Crown.

“Of the 24 girls on the team, 15 are freshmen, so we look forward to the potential that is there for all District 300 Schools,” coach Jeff Baeder said. “The girls have learned a lot over the last few weeks and I look forward to our first game.”

DeKALB – For a moment, Marin Maric thought it might be too difficult.

More than three years ago, the 6-foot10 big man for the Northern Illinois basketball team moved from Croatia to the United States and lived on the campus of La Lumiere School – a prep school in La Porte, Indiana. He suddenly found himself living in dorms while knowing little English.

“It was difficult,” Maric said recently.

“The first three nights I didn’t sleep. All in my head was, ‘Why did I come here? I don’t know any English, I don’t know the culture.’ It was challenging.”

Maric had finished school in Croatia and was coming off being a part of his country’s under-18 team that won the gold medal at the 2012 FIBA Euro Cup – a team led by Dario Saric, who was the No. 12 pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. He grew up in the port town of Split alongside the Adriatic Sea, the hometown of former Bulls forward Toni Kukoc. When Maric flew into Chicago in 2012 – admiring all of the skyscrapers – it was the first time he had ever been to America.

“On my way over, I tried to picture how it would be in my head,” he said. “It was a lot of emptiness leaving my family

This season, the redshirt sophomore averages a team-high 12.1 points and 8.5 rebounds. He has recorded 14 double-doubles, which is third-most in the Mid-American Conference, and brings energy to the team, regularly raising his hands to the crowd to encourage cheering.

“That’s great because some bigs don’t have any emotion,” Montgomery said. “ They just rebound and defend. I like when our guys – especially him – show passion and energy.”

However, an ankle injury near the end of the season has plagued him while the Huskies prepare for their game against UC Santa Barbara in the first round of the Vegas 16 tournament Monday, NIU’s first postseason appearance in two decades. Montgomery and Maric both said they believe the big man will play.

It’s not the first time Maric has suffered a foot injury. During his first year, he broke his foot during practice six games into the season – causing him to redshirt the rest of the way.

But for the most part, life in America has been beneficial for Maric and the Huskies.

The biggest thing that surprised him about life in the United States?

“You’ll never see people in Croatia go to class in pajamas,” he said. “That’s what shocked me.”

When asked whether Maric now goes to class in more comfortable clothing, he flashes a wide smile.

“Oh, yeah,” he said. “If nobody cares, what do I care?”

Ladd stays hot; late goal lifts Hawks Victory clinches spot in playoffs

mlazerus@suntimes.com VANCOUVER, British Columbia – It’s disingenuous to say playoff seeding doesn’t matter at all to the Blackhawks.

Just because they’ve won the Stanley Cup and reached overtime of Game 7 of the conference final as a third-place team each of the past two seasons doesn’t mean they don’t want home-ice advantage, that it wouldn’t make life easier.

And you can be sure the last thing the Hawks want is to slip into fourth place and open the playoffs against the Los Angeles Kings or Anaheim Ducks.

It’s just that the Hawks don’t freak out about these things.

“I wouldn’t say that the group is casual about it,” said Andrew Ladd, who still says “they” more than he says “we” as he readjusts to life in Chicago. “I guess I’d say that they’re more comfortable with adversity than most teams. When they’re down, there’s no panic. There seems to be a comfort level in terms of what they can do – I mean, what we can do.”

What matters most isn’t where the Hawks finish, but how they finish. And after a dreadful 1-4-2 stretch, the Hawks

The win clinched a playoff spot for the Hawks, a foregone conclusion even with the recent slide. It’s the eighth straight season the Hawks have made the playoffs, after missing out in eight of nine seasons.

Now, the Canucks and the Calgary

Flames aren’t exactly elite competition, so take the two games – neither an overwhelming show of domination – for what they are. But with six games left in the season, the Hawks need all the positive vibes and forward momentum they can get.

Trevor van Riemsdyk set up both of the Hawks’ goals, Teuvo Teravainen scored while filling in for the injured Artem Anisimov on the second line, goalie Scott Darling had another strong

game in his sixth straight start in place of the injured Corey Crawford, and Marcus Kruger helped the Hawks kill off a four-minute Jonathan Toews penalty in the third.

On the other hand, the Hawks have gone 23 straight power plays without a goal, and couldn’t hold on to a third-period lead.

The first period was the best the Hawks have played in a while, as all four lines created offensive chances.

Tomas Fleischmann got the lone goal of the period, scoring from the top of the right circle off a van Riemsdyk pass and through a Dennis Rasmussen screen.

The Canucks tied it midway through the second period on an Alex Burrows goal in the low slot. Darling kept the game tied with a huge stop on Jake Virtanen on a 2-on-1 a few minutes later.

The Hawks took the lead back at 5:37 of the third period off a tic-tac-toe play – Patrick Kane to van Riemsdyk to Teravainen. Kane has a league-high 94 points with six games left in the season.

The Hawks then killed off the Toews’ high-sticking penalty, aided by a brilliant Darling save on Burrows. But Sven Baertschi’s net-crashing goal at 14:18, sparked by an Artemi Panarin turnover, tied it.

But Ladd’s sixth goal since coming to the Hawks – and his third in the past two games – with 2:27 to go was the difference, set up by a Toews drop pass in the slot.

Team meeting – at last – for desperate Bulls

jcowley@suntimes.com CHICAGO – A team meeting happened Sunday for the Bulls.

Finally.

Now, it’s a matter of figuring out whether it’s too late.

“It’s a do-or-die week for us,” veteran Mike Dunleavy said after the Easter practice, stating the obvious.

A Monday home game with red-hot Atlanta, road games at Indiana and Houston, and then a huge weekend showdown with Detroit at the United Center? Yeah, do or die is about right with 10 regular-season games left and the Bulls sitting two games out of a final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

And although a team meeting in which players could vent some frustration and throw out opinions seemingly has been needed for months, it finally

took place in the wake of getting blown out by Orlando on Saturday night.

“We did get together and talk,” coach Fred Hoiberg said of the meeting with only players and coaches.

“That was a big part of what [Sunday] was about, getting in there and talking about some things and hopefully airing some things Fred Hoiberg out.”

Asked what was specifically aired out, Hoiberg said, “Oh, I’m not going to talk about that.”

What the first-year coach would talk about, however, was he came away from the meeting feeling like guys were honest in their concerns and opinions.

“As always happens in those type of meetings, yeah, you talk about things and obviously we have a lot to correct

right now,” Hoiberg said. “I think it had to be done. And again, I thought it was productive.

“I think [guys were honest]. And that’s what it has to be when you go through those things. You have to have honest communication where things aren’t taken personal. I thought it was productive from that standpoint.”

One key point that was addressed was actually brought up by Hoiberg on Saturday, when he admitted, “Obviously what I’m saying right now my message isn’t getting across.”

He went into further detail on that Sunday.

“That’s the big thing,” Hoiberg said.

“It starts with us going out there and flat out competing and communicating with each other. The biggest thing is guys battling through the adversity.

When we put our heads down, obviously things don’t go well for our group. It’s

fighting through those tough times. Adversity will hit us every time we step on that floor. What will define us is how we handle that adversity. It’s pretty simple when it all comes down to it. You have to fight. Instead of splintering and pulling apart, you have to find a way to stick together through those tough times.”

Although Dunleavy said communication did in fact have to improve between the coaching staff and the players, it’s pretty obvious where the blame falls.

“It’s two-way,” Dunleavy said. “It’s what communication is all about. They have to find a way for us to do it, but we as players have to take a collective responsibility and get it done. And that’s what we’re searching for right now.

“I think we’re pretty well prepared going into games – it’s a good game plan.

I just think we’ve had some issues with carrying out that game plan.”
