NKCC, Northern Kane County Chamber of Commerce, is a regional chamber serving the communities of Carpentersville, East Dundee, Gilberts, Sleepy Hollow, and West Dundee. Having worked for the chamber for the past 17 years, I have witnessed the business landscape change significantly. Online shopping, social media engagement, other web-based interactions, have deprived us of the personal relationships and dedicated attention that used to accompany our business transactions. During these changes, chambers have struggled to find relevance: competing with busy schedules and a myriad of other networking opportunities and choices. Some question whether chambers are relevant or necessary today. Here is my answer.

Chambers offer the business community a place to come together and share ideas, make new connections, and expand their contact base. Networking opportunities are offered in a multitude of formats and at a variety of times to suit varying schedules. In addition, chambers offer educational seminars and professional development on relevant topics such as marketing, finance, social media, and tools to help the small business owner with limited resources succeed.

In addition to educational and networking opportunities, chambers offer access and advocacy with local government. The NKCC works closely with Carpentersville, East Dundee, Gilberts, Sleepy Hollow, and West Dundee through community events and other local initiatives to promote shopping local businesses.

The past few years has challenged the chamber, our businesses, communities, and ourselves. When circumstances arise that can negatively affect any of us, the chamber quickly goes into action providing resources, information, and support for those impacted. We have been able to do this because we have strong leadership and communication. Our Board, Ambassadors, volunteers, and staff believe in the mission of the chamber and our members know the value of NKCC. The chamber is an essential organization.

As we continue to navigate the changing environment we are faced with, I passionately believe, strong businesses make strong communities. We will continue to work with area service organizations and clubs in an on-going effort to make our community a destination and a place people can be proud to call home. We genuinely believe that when we all work together, we all win by making the Northern Kane County region a wonderful place to live, visit, shop and do business!

The Northern Kane County Ambassadors Committee is comprised of local business professionals who function as the public relations arm of the chamber intent on growing and retaining membership by providing an educated approach to the benefits, services and events offered through the chamber.

WOMEN IN BUSINESS

Women in Business is affliated with the Northern Kane County Chamber of Commerce. The purpose of the group is to provide dynamic programing to business professionals within Northern Kane and to raise funds that are awarded, in the form of scholarships to students within School District 300.

The Village of Gilberts has proudly been named the “2nd Safest City in Illinois” as ranked by Safewise.com. The Village was platted in 1855 and was incorporated in 1890. With an area of 5.5 square miles, the Village has a current estimated population of 8,097. Gilberts is a place close to major cities, but far enough away to provide room for healthy growth of families, small businesses, and light industrial manufacturing. The Village hosts several community events throughout the year including an Easter Egg Hunt, Community-Wide Garage Sale, Fishing Derby, Community Days Festival, Movies in the Park, Fall Bonfire, and Tree Lighting Ceremony. Carpentersville is a great community to start a business and put down your roots and start a family!

When it comes to businesses, the Walmart Supercenter, anchoring the Route 25 retail corridor, continued to attract national retailers such as Starbucks, Wingstop, and O’Reilly Auto Parts. The Route 31 retail corridor has welcomed, El Diablo, Popeye’s Chicken, Southern Belle’s, Gyradiko, and Jersey Mike’s. The Randall Road retail corridor experienced growth as well with Lou Malnati’s, Meat & Potato Eatery, and Burger King.

Manufacturers in the Spring Hill Center for Commerce & Industry Business Park and along the Maple Avenue industrial area offer high-paying positions in the tool and die, fabrication, injection molding, food processing, and high tech industries.

For families, Carpentersville has provided a variety of housing options throughout the community from starter homes to large, upscale single-family residences. Adjacent to the Fox River, the Old Town neighborhood is lined with historic homes and surrounds Carpenter Park.

Recently, Carpentersville has focused on improving the parks. Carpenter Park has experienced a major renovation. The improvements have included new playground equipment, a disc golf course, a walking track with exercise stations, a softball field, band shell improvements, multiuse trails with a connection to the Fox River Trail, and a historic area where visitors can learn more about Carpentersville’s history. There also are numerous other outdoor

recreation opportunities in addition to Carpenter Park. The Chicago Area Mountain Bikers (CAMBr) have been making improvements to Keith Andres Park and Raceway Woods for several years, creating a destination known throughout the Midwest as one of the premier destinations for mountain biking. Since 2012, CAMBr has volunteered hundreds of hours to transform Keith Andres Park into a 25-acre bike park and have created a three and a half mile bike trail through Raceway Woods.

Carpentersville is a great place to shop, play, and work.

The Village of East Dundee, a home rule community as defined by the Illinois Constitution, is located approximately 35 miles west of the City of Chicago, primarily in Kane County with a small portion in Cook County. According to the 2020 census, there are 3,152 residents. East Dundee encompasses approximately 3.1 square miles. The Fox River is the western border of the Village, and the Fox River Bike Trail runs through the Village’s historic downtown district. Residents and visitors of East Dundee can enjoy an array of dining, retail, social and outdoor activities, including Santa’s Village Azoosment & Water Park.  A picturesque historic downtown, with the former train depot (now a visitor center) in the heart of the district is home to many popular yearround special events hosted by the Village and outside organizations.

est Dundee offers smalltown charm and regional convenience. The community’s rich heritage is showcased in the historic downtown business district which offers a variety of dining, shopping, and entertainment adjacent to the peaceful Fox River.

As the physical and symbolic heart of the community, historic downtown West Dundee has seen significant investment in building stock with multiple authentic restorations and the new businesses that followed.

The district’s burgeoning dining scene is anchored by Emmett’s Brewing Co. and The Village Squire. Joining these mainstays are Bleuroot, Bamboozels, Elder & Oat café, and Woodfire. This culinary collection offers something for everyone – microbrews, American fare, farmto-table creations, scratch-made backed goods, and authentic Roman cuisine, all within a comfortable block’s walk.

Entertainment in the District comes to life at Rochaus, an intimate experience that attracts national acts to this restored, state-

of-the-art facility which originally served as a venue for vaudeville.

Specialty stores are again starting to take center stage in the District, with mainstay Around the Corner Candy joined by home-centric retailers Boxwood Home Design & Cabinetry, JS River Antiques, Lady Bug Lane, The Half Full Nest Vintage Market, and Trippots. The District features numerous professional services, and the opportunity to pamper oneself at Spa Bleu and Shine Salon.

Needing a break from the pace of the day? Tranquility can be found along the District’s Riverwalk, which was recently extended south of Main Street. This picturesque setting allows one to sit, stroll, fish, or access the water for canoeing or kayaking. One can even spend the night in the heart the District at 124 Lofts, which offers accommodations right out of the trendiest urban neighborhood.

New multi-family residential development has brought additional housing choice to West Dundee, with luxury apartments at Seasons at Randall Road and Springs at Canterfield and independent seniorliving apartments at Spring Hill Senior Residences. In the future, assisted living and memory care will be available at the Woodlands at Canterfield.

With convenient access from I-90 and the Randall Road corridor, the Oakview Corporate Park is home to Canlan Sports and various U.S. headquarters of international companies including

UK-based Renishaw and Germany-based Helukabel and Oelheld.

Dundee Township boasts its very own hamlet, the Village of Sleepy Hollow, a quaint residential community of less than 3,400 founded in 1958. With rural charm forsaking the business and industry that peppers its neighbors in the Fox River Valley, Sleepy Hollow is a haven from noise, traffic and crime.

The citizens of Sleepy Hollow take immense pride in their family community. With the president and board of trustees committed to retaining its rustic small town atmosphere while forging ahead into the next century, Sleepy Hollow embraces tomorrow while cherishing its past.

Floyd Falese, the first village president and keeper of the vision for Sleepy Hollow, hired landscape artist and leading planner Raymond W. Hazekamp who designed a village of rambling roads (sans curbs and sidewalks) that led into cul-de-sacs and to homes constructed on lots a minimum of one-half acre. Hazekamp called this “the Sleepy Hollow concept of good living.” And he did all this without leveling a single tree.

E stablished in 1835, Dundee Township is one of the oldest governments in the Fox River Valley. Its six square miles include the vibrant river towns of Carpentersville, East Dundee, West Dundee, Sleepy Hollow and parts of Algonquin, Elgin and Gilberts.

The Dundee Township’s Supervisor’s Office acts on a long tradition of neighbors helping neighbors by offering essential services to residents in need.  The Emergency Assistance program provides help with utility disconnections and rental eviction notices.  The General Assistance program provides monthly assistance to those with limited incomes.  The Ride in Kane program provides door-to-door transportation services to seniors and disabled individuals.

In addition, the Supervisor’s office operates two public cemeteries.  The historic West Cemetery is located on Route 31 in West Dundee. The East Cemetery on Route 25 in East Dundee features a Columbaria Garden, which provides a tranquil, natural setting for the inurnment of cremated remains.

The Township also manages eight open space recreation areas where a loyal following of volunteers are working with staff to ecologically restore more than 1,000 acres. These rich habitats offer trail systems to allow hikers, birders, and horseback riders to exist harmoniously with wildlife.  A steady stream of people can be found visiting Raceway Woods, Snuffy’s Prairie, Dixie Briggs Fromm Illinois State Nature Preserve, Jelke Creek Bird Sanctuary, Library Springs, Salamander Springs, Helm Woods and Wahoo Woods – a nature play park.

The Township Clerk arranges voter registration, early and absentee voting, free notary public services and is the official keeper of all township records and information.

The Assessor’s office maintains residential, commercial and industrial property assessments and record systems.  They also assist with homestead and senior exemptions, senior tax freeze documentation, real estate tax complaints,

circuit breaker assistance, voter registration and free notary services to residents.

The Road District Commissioner and crew offers the following services to residents on township roads: snow removal, road repair and maintenance, brush trimming along right-of-ways, maintenance of township highway property and flood control.

After 20 years in the financial services industry, Jay left his position as a regional VP with Prudential to join Edward Jones in May 2017. He and his wife Stephanie had just had their first child, daughter Avery, three months prior in February and being able to be home every night with them was his top priority. Mark is a long-time area resident and has been a State Farm Agent since 1991. He went to The University of Wisconsin-Stout where he met his wife of over thirty-three years. They have three adult children who they are very proud of. Being involved in the community is important to them. One of the many ways they are involved is their active support of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dundee Township. At Mark Krueger - State Farm Insurance Agent, all of his Team Members are multi state licensed. Their job is to make sure when the unexpected happens, you are covered.

Michael Simpson leads the Baird & Warner Algonquin office as its designated managing broker. He is a 19-year veteran of the real estate industry. First licensed as a broker in 2001, he earned his managing broker license 3 years later. Michael began his career in the Algonquin market, then joined Baird & Warner Carpentersville in 2002.

At the local level, Michael serves as Immediate Past President for the Realtor Association of Fox Valley. Simpson is a 2017 graduate of the Illinois Realtors Leadership Development Program. He also serves on several Illinois Realtors Committees, including Realtor Political Involvement, Audit, and Nominating. Michael also serves as the Illinois Realtors State Legislative Contact for Illinois Senator Donald DeWitte. With 20+ years of experience as a senior hair designer at Mario Tricoci, Kate Volarath brought her dream to life in 2009. She opened her very first full-service hair and nail salon named Salon Anovin, which is a combination of her three children names, Anyssa, Noly, and Nevin. Community Unit School District 300

District 300’s central mission is to ensure all students are college or career ready upon graduation. District 300’s goal is to work in partnership with the student to define his or her success, while maintaining high expectations. Quality instruction promotes active learning for all students and is supported by their teachers, data, and assessments. All students are on a journey. When students arrive to us in District 300, this is the beginning of their journey, or Point A. Each District 300 student is striving to reach his or her destination, Point B, which is to become college or career ready upon graduation.

Carpentersville Morning Rotary Club

Rotary Club of Carpentersville connects passionate people with diverse perspectives to exchange ideas, forge lifelong friendships, and, above all, take action to help our community and world. Their signature project is every November, they provide over 300 brand new winter coats to the needy children in the D300 community under the fund-raising banner, Operation Warm. The Rotary Club also provides support to the local food pantry through fundraising efforts and volunteering.

Hoof Woof and Meow Animal Rescue

Hoof Woof and Meow is a coalition of volunteers and professionals including rescuers, transporters, fosters, veterinarians, humane societies, investigators, and shelters that advocate for and save homeless animals throughout the State of Illinois and across the country. Hoof Woof & Meow Animal Rescue is a registered nonprofit 501(c)(3) no-kill animal rescue organization. Established in September 2012, we are on a mission to eliminate needless deaths and inhumane treatment of all animals. We are committed to finding forever homes for the animals in our care and educating the public on the issues of mistreatment and overpopulation as well as the need for comprehensive spay and neutering programs.

Dundee Township Park District

The Dundee Township Park District, located in Kane County, Illinois serves the communities of Carpentersville, East Dundee, West Dundee, Sleepy Hollow, and portions of Algonquin, Gilberts, Elgin, Barrington Hills, and Hoffman Estates. The Park District offers a wide variety of services to both residents and nonresidents of Dundee Township. Some of the facilities and services offered include two fitness centers located at the Rakow Center and Randall Oaks Recreation Center, two golf courses which include Bonnie Dundee and Randall Oaks golf courses, an Adult Activities Center, two outdoor swimming pools which include Dolphin Cove Family Aquatic Center and Sleepy Hollow Pool, an indoor pool at the Rakow Center, Randall Oaks Zoo, and 40 park sites and facilities.

7 Popular Attractions the Area Has to Offer

Nature and community blend seamlessly in Northern Kane County to offer a variety of scenery, activity and adventure for visitors. Check out these seven attractions that can be incorporated into a Northern Kane County itinerary.

EAGLES

Each winter, around 3,000 bald eagles fly to Illinois to make it their temporary home, and for the past several years, daily sightings in Dundee and Carpentersville have become more and more common. The Fox River Dam and areas along the river attract spectators hoping to get an up-close glance at these majestic birds as well as the perfect photo.

OWLS

The great horned owl is a permanent resident of Illinois and the second largest owl in North America. Great horned owls find Northern Kane to be the perfect home things from above!

MANDARIN DUCK

The mandarin duck was introduced from the Far East as its name suggests. Odd for a duck, they nest in trees, sometimes high above the water. In recent years, rare sightings of these beautiful birds have been captured along the Fox River in Northern Kane County.

INTELLIGENTSIA BIKE RACE, WEST DUNDEE RIVER CHALLENGE

Intelligentsia Cup is a 10-day crit racing series set in and around Chicagoland. The stages are different each day, offering new challenges and a daily opportunity for an epic win, and an excellent experience overall. Each stage is designed with spectators in mind because crits are fun and exciting to watch! As a spectator you will be close to the action –the failures, the triumphs… and yes, the crashes. Cyclists come from all over to participate in the race. West Dundee has welcomed them for the past six years and plans on keeping this as an annual attraction to Northern Kane.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY

The Thom McNamee Memorial St. Patrick’s Day parade is held each March in memory of Thom McNamee and his contributions to the area. The funds raised support the Friends of the Fox and the F.I.S.H Food Pantry. Each year, the event draws over 10,000 spectators to the Northern Kane Community. They come for the parade, the Big Wheel Races, and fireworks, and then have a chance to visit our many bars, restaurants, and shops.

SANTA’S VILLAGE

Santa’s Village has been a family entertainment destination in Northern Kane County since 1959. Over the years, the park has added several new thrill rides and attractions while restoring some classic favorites. Since first opening, their team has created a legacy of delivering memorable guest experiences. People come from all over Illinois to experience all rides, games, water slides, the petting zoo and entertainment. Santa’s Village is a great place for corporate picnics, family reunions, birthday parties or just a day out with the family!

GILBERTS COMMUNITY DAYS

Gilberts Community Days is the village’s annual festival to bring residents, visitors, and businesses together in a weekend long celebration of community and fun! Thousands of people from outside our community visit this great event as we highlight our local restaurants, businesses, and local talent.

The West Dundee River Challenge is a day of pro/am cycling and is back to the village for its 7th year! The day will feature top riders competing in the opening day of the Prairie State Cycling Classic’s Intelligentsia Cup, plus expanded activities including local restaurants serving up food and libations, live music, race-side dining, a KidZone activity area, and other family-friendly activities.

RACEWAY WOODS 5K

Rotary Club of Carpentersville Morning August

Competitors, walkers, dog lovers – all will be at the historic, Meadowdale International Raceway for the 5K / 3K run. Now a 90-acre forest preserve in Carpentersville, Raceway Woods showcases old-growth forests, rolling terrain and preserves the paths of the original racetrack. In the tradition of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” historic downtown East and West Dundee come to life during the first week of December through a Victorian Christmas celebration with small town ambiance. Friday night festivities include tree lighting ceremonies, hot cocoa, and an opportunity to meet with Santa, in addition to live portrayals of Christmas scenes in storefronts along Main and River Streets. The “Spirit of Christmas” parade steps off on Saturday at 10 a.m. and features community organizations and performance groups, and of course, Santa Claus himself. East Dundee is the site for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on the second Saturday in March. Spectators can celebrate Irish tradition with leprechauns, bagpipe players, floats, and marching units. Gilbert Community Days

Gilberts Community Days is a free three-day community festival held the weekend after Memorial Day. This is the sixth annual Community Days festival and will take place in Town Square Park, 195 Jackson St. The festival offers entertainment for all ages including live bands, a wide variety of food and drink options, as well as a car show to conclude the weekend. Those in attendance will find an assortment of rides and games provided by Fantasy Amusements Co., along with a children’s tent and a petting zoo. Halloween in the Hollow

There aren’t many events where you get to see the famed “Headless Horseman” from Washington Irving’s classic tale, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”. But ever since the early 1970s, Sleepy Hollow has taken its name to heart once a year for a big Halloween event at Sabatino Park. The build-up for this event actually starts a month in advance when the Village opens up the park so that residents can pile up their branches and other yard waste into a huge pile (which becomes a bonfire at the fest). The evening’s festivities, which start at 3 p.m. with a chili contest, include food sales, a costume parade and contest, pumpkin carving and hayrides. The day culminates with the lighting of the huge bonfire at 6 p.m. and the appearance of the “headless horseman” riding in on a majestic horse, to the delight of the large crowd. Gilberts Fall Bonfire

This year’s bonfire falls on Saturday, Oct. 22 and will be held in the afternoon from 3:30–5:30 p.m. at Memorial Park. Besides sitting around the fire to help keep warm, entertainment which will include music and games. Keeping in tradition, horse drawn wagon rides will be available around the pond. Pumpkins will be on hand for decorating, and snacks and juice will be provided.

The Fox River Valley Public Library District (FRVPLD) serves a large, diverse group of communities. The district is comprised of the 70,000 residents who live in East Dundee, West Dundee, Carpentersville, Sleepy Hollow, Gilberts, and parts of Algonquin, Elgin and Barrington Hills. FRVPLD is the seventh largest out of 340 library districts in Illinois. Library service is provided at the Dundee Library in East Dundee, the Randall Oaks Library West Dundee, and by a Home Delivery Service. Their history dates back to 1876, when Dundee Township established a tax-supported library, among the first in Illinois.

As a steward of learning and discovery, FRVPLD has branched out into offering more than books. CUSD 300 Puts Children First

As the 6th largest school district in Illinois based on student enrollment, District 300 serves nearly 21,000 students while covering 118 square miles.

District 300’s central mission is to ensure that all students are college or career ready upon graduation and Superintendent Fred Heid has developed innovative programs to address community needs and ensure the success of this mission. Since 2015, District 300 has implemented a tuition free full-day kindergarten program district wide, incorporated art and STEM labs into elementary schools, developed Pathway Programs (including Advanced Manufacturing at Hampshire High School, Entrepreneurship at Dundee-Crown High School, and Information Technology and Computer Science at Jacobs High School) that provide students with the opportunity to earn career credentials, and worked on over 817 action items in the

District’s Five-Year Strategic Plan (monitor the progress of the District 300 Strategic Plan at d300.org/StrategicPlan).

Last year, District 300 graduated 1,588 students who earned $18.8 million in college scholarships. 1,806 students participated in early college coursework. And through our Accelerate College Program, ten District 300 students received their college diplomas from Elgin Community College, a day before their high school diplomas, completely tuition-free.
