MELISSA HERNANDEZ PRESIDENT Northern Kane County Chamberof Commerce

NKCC, Northern Kane County Chamber of Commerce, is a regional chamber serving the communities of Carpentersville, East Dundee, Gilberts, Sleepy Hollow, and West Dundee. Having worked for the chamber for the past 15 years, I have witnessed the business landscape change significantly. Online shopping, social media engagement, other web-based interactions, and most recently the pandemic, have deprived us of the personal relationships and dedicated attention that used to accompany our business transactions. In the midst of these changes, chambers have struggled to find relevance: competing with busy schedules and a myriad of other networking opportunities and choices. Some question whether chambers are relevant or necessary today. Here is my answer. Chambers offer the business community a place to come together and share ideas, make new connections, and expand their contact base. Networking opportunities are offered in a multitude of formats and at a variety of times to suit varying schedules. In addition, chambers offer educational seminars and professional development on relevant topics such as marketing, finance, social media, and tools to help the small business owner with limited resources succeed. In addition to educational and networking opportunities, chambers offer access and advocacy with local government. The NKCC works closely with Carpentersville, East Dundee, Gilberts, Sleepy Hollow, and West Dundee through community events and other local initiatives to promote shopping local businesses. 2020 Challenged the chamber, our businesses, communities, and ourselves. When the pandemic hit, the chamber quickly went into action providing resources, information, and support for those impacted. We did our best to still bring people together and allow them to network, while emphasizing safety. We connected with State and local officials to bring quick information to our businesses regarding support, opportunities, funding relief, and current guidelines businesses were encouraged to follow. The board worked hard to come up with ways to promote local while following the guidelines and keeping our community safe. As we come to the other side of the pandemic, I passionately believe, strong businesses make strong communities. We will continue to work with area service organizations and clubs to clean up our community and keep it a great place to live. The NKCC participates in local food drives, Rotary clubs, and the Boys and Girls Club of Dundee Township to name a few. We genuinely believe that when we all work together, we all win by making the Northern Kane County region a wonderful place to live, shop and do business!

he Village of Gilberts has proudly been named the “2nd Safest City in Illinois” as ranked by Safewise.com. The Village was platted in 1855 and was incorporated in 1890. With an area of 5.5 square miles, the Village has a current estimated population of 8,097. Gilberts is a place close to major cities, but far enough away to provide room for healthy growth of families, small businesses and light industrial manufacturing. When it comes to businesses, the Walmart Supercenter, anchoring the Route 25 retail corridor, continued to attract national retailers such as Starbucks, Wingstop, and O’Reilly Auto Parts. The Route 31 retail corridor has welcomed, Spotted Fox, Popeye’s Chicken, Southern Belle’s, Gyradiko, and Jersey Mike’s. The Randall Road retail corridor experienced growth as well with Lou Malnati’s, Meat & Potato Eatery, and Burger King.

Manufacturers in the Spring Hill Center for Commerce & Industry Business Park and along the Maple Avenue industrial area offer high paying positions in the tool & die, fabrication, injection molding, food processing, and high tech industries. For families, Carpentersville has provided a variety of housing options throughout the community from starter homes to large, upscale single family residences. Adjacent to the Fox River, the Old Town neighborhood is lined with historic homes and surrounds Carpenter Park. Recently, Carpentersville has focused on improving the parks. Carpenter Park has experienced a major renovation. The improvements have included new playground equipment, a disc golf course, a walking track with exercise stations, a softball field, band shell improvements, multiuse trails with a connection to the Fox River Trail, and a historic area where visitors can learn more about Carpentersville’s history. Since 2012 CAMBr has volunteered hundreds of hours to transform Keith Andres Park into a 25 acre bike park and have created a three and half mile bike trail through Raceway Woods. he Village of East Dundee, a home rule community as defined by the Illinois Constitution, is located approximately 35 miles west of the City of Chicago, primarily in Kane County with a small portion in Cook County. According to the 2010 census, there were 2,860 residents with current estimates at 3,204. East Dundee encompasses approximately 3.1 square miles. The Fox River is the western border of the Village and the Fox River Bike Trail runs through the Village’s historic downtown district. Residents and visitors of East Dundee can enjoy an array of dining, retail, social and outdoor activities, including Santa’s Village Azoosment & Water Park. undee Township boasts its very own hamlet, the Village of Sleepy Hollow, a quaint residential community of less than 3,400 founded in 1958. With rural charm forsaking the business and industry that peppers its neighbors in the Fox River Valley, Sleepy Hollow is a haven from noise, traffic and crime. stablished in 1835, Dundee Township is one of the oldest governments in the Fox River Valley. Its six square miles include the vibrant river towns of Carpentersville, East Dundee, West Dundee, Sleepy Hollow and parts of Algonquin, Elgin and Gilberts.

A steady stream of people can be found visiting Raceway Woods, Snuffy’s Prairie, Dixie Briggs Fromm Illinois State Nature Preserve, Jelke Creek Bird Sanctuary, Library Springs,

Salamander Springs, and Wahoo Woods - a nature play park. The Township Clerk arranges voter registration, early and absentee voting, free notary public services and is the official keeper of all township records and information. The Assessor’s office maintains residential, commercial and industrial property assessments and record systems. They also assist with homestead and senior exemptions, senior tax freeze documentation, real estate tax complaints, circuit breaker assistance, voter registration and free notary services to residents. The Highway Commissioner and crew offers the following services to residents on township roads: snow removal, road repair and maintenance, brush trimming along rightof-ways, maintenance of township highway property and flood control. 2020 AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE recognize eight businesses & organizations

he Northern Kane County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the recipients of its 2020 Awards of Excellence.

It did not take businesses and organizations long to realize that COVID was a real concern and that it was going to remain with us longer than initially hoped. Along with the chamber, many of our local organizations quickly sprung into action to support their clients, customers, and our community. Every year, the chamber recognizes businesses and individuals that have gone above and beyond, and they are honored at an annual dinner that is usually held in the fall. When it became apparent that we were not going to be able to hold an event, we still wanted to find a way to celebrate our community and our successes! We reached out to our members and asked that they nominate a business and/or organization they felt contributed something positive during the pandemic, and here are the responses we got back:

BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF DUNDEE TOWNSHIP

During the pandemic, the BGCDT community donors found an excellent way to come together and help those who were in need the most. They provided over 300 meals daily for community members, many of whom are single parents, had been laid off, or faced other financial hardships during the stay-at-home order. BGCDT site directors and volunteers throughout the community picked up and delivered meals daily that were prepared by several local restaurants.

DUNDEE TOWNSHIP ROTARY CLUB

The Rotary Club was thrilled to end their 40th Anniversary Celebration by hitting the $1 Million mark in Scholarships awarded! The Virtual Scholarship Banquet was held on May 4. Special thanks to all our donors and presenters who participated in this event. The club was also determined not to let COVID force them into skipping their annual Trick-or-Treat event for children with special needs, so the event was set up outdoors and the kids could walk thru in their costumes and enjoy some Halloween fun and treats.

Ernie has been a strong advocate of the NKCC community for over 10 years. He serves as a member of the Dundee Township Lions Club, a board member for the Boys and Girls Club of Dundee Township, and serves as a board member for the chamber. Ernie has a generous spirit and works hard to serve his clients and his community. During the pandemic, Ernie worked hard to offer comfort and assurance to client, by keeping in touch with them and keeping them informed. He continued to serve his clients while continuing to help the community.

FIRST AMERICAN BANK

All the loans, grants and programs offered by the government during the shutdown were overwhelming and confusing to some business owners. First American Bank worked hard to update their clients on the PPP Loan Program and other disaster relief programs that were available during the pandemic. As many businesses were struggling to deal with so many issues, they could find comfort, help, and support from First American. The team helped them through the entire process and if there were issues, they were very quick to respond and help you through it. 14 | NORTHERN KANE COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

AWARDS STUDIO 232 DESIGN

Jackie Gomolski, who is the owner of Studio 232 Design and a local yoga instructor, was thrilled to offer chamber members and members of the community an on-line yoga class. The only fee was a donation to the F.I.S.H. Food Pantry in Carpentersville. The classes were held weekly for 3 months and were fun and challenging. At the end of the series, Jackie presented the food pantry with a check for over $1500.

THE CHUBBY BULL FROG BAR AND GRILL FOX RIVER PUBLIC LIBRARY DISTRICT

With everything being shutdown and people feeling very isolated, the library developed a method to continue to get books and resources into the hands of the library card holders. They offered drive up and delivery services as well as held virtual story times for young children. They continued its summer lunch program by offering families to come by the library and use their touchless process to pick up their meals.

KMA SLEEPY HOLLOW

Ron worked hard to keep an emphasis on fitness and safety. KMA was a place where a kid could release some pent-up frustrations and get a break from all the changes and struggles, we were dealing with. Ron offered indoor classes with masks and moved classes outside when weather permitted.

The owners of Chubby’s are no strangers to the community and the Bull Frog has participated in several parades, festivals, and local events. Mike always has a smile on his face when you walk in the door and can call out most guests by name. The shutdown was particularly hard on restaurants, but Chubby’s worked hard to make the best of things while keeping their customers and community safe. They offered drive up service with a smile and sometimes music. They continue to ask for donations to the F.I.S.H Food Pantry and are big supporters of Hoof Woof and Meow Animal Rescue.

SLEEPY HOLLOW 4TH OF JULY CELEBRATION

East Dundee is the site for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on the second Saturday in March. Spectators can celebrate Irish tradition with leprechauns, bagpipe players, floats, and marching units. The parade is only the beginning of a festive week that includes food, music, and fun as East Dundee merchants, restaurateurs, and friends welcome visitors for this special community celebration. The week concludes with fireworks on the Fox River on the third Saturday of March. Sponsored by Bandito Barney’s in East Dundee, the annual parade and fireworks are coordinated by McNamee family members to honor their brother and late business owner, Thom McNamee. Sabatino Park in Sleepy Hollow is the place to be each year on the Fourth of July. OCTOBER 2022 HALLOWEEN IN THE HOLLOW There aren’t many events where you get to see the famed “Headless Horseman” from Washington Irving’s classic tale, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”. But ever since the early 1970s, Sleepy Hollow has taken its name to heart once a year for a big Halloween event at Sabatino Park. The build-up for this event actually starts a month in advance when the village opens up the park so residents can pile up their branches and other yard waste into a huge pile (which becomes a bonfire at the fest). The evening’s festivities, which start at 3 p.m. with a chili contest, include food sales, a costume parade and contest, pumpkin carving and hayrides. The day culminates with the lighting of the huge bonfire at 6 p.m. and the appearance of the “headless horseman” riding in on a majestic horse, to the delight of the large crowd. he Fox River Valley Public Library District (FRVPLD) serves a large, diverse group of communities. The district is comprised of the 70,000 residents who live in East Dundee, West Dundee, Carpentersville, Sleepy Hollow, Gilberts, and parts of Algonquin, Elgin and Barrington Hills. FRVPLD’s vision is to provide equal opportunity for all to learn, explore, imagine, create, and connect in a welcoming environment. District 300’s central mission is to ensure that all students are college or career ready upon graduation and Superintendent Fred Heid has developed innovative programs to address community needs and ensure the success of this mission.
