The History of McHenry

B

orn out of an Illinois prairie frontier, this community known as McHenry first took shape as the hunting and fishing grounds of the Potawatomie Indians.

In 1836 McHenry County was created out of Cook County and included present day Lake County. Both the county and the The Riverwalk city were named after Major William McHenry who served in the War of 1812 and the Blackhawk War. The community of McHenry served as the first seat of government until 1844 when Lake County was established as a separate county.

In the early days McHenry’s center of commerce had three divisions and a strong rivalry existed among them. The Riverside section (Riverside Drive) was the first to be established along the Fox River. The West McHenry area (Main Street) was named Gagetown for George Gage who owned the site and was influential in securing the Northwest Railroad (Metra) in 1854. The

Green Street area, located between the former and latter, was once called Centervillle.

During the first half of the 19th century, McHenry flourished as a resort area because of the Fox River, surrounding lakes, and easy accessibility from Chicago. For decades, McHenry took very seriously its title as the “Gateway to the Chain-of-Lakes.”

In spite of its beauty and strong attraction to tourists, McHenry owed her growth to the stability provided by the many farmers who worked the fertile land as well as the establishment of industry with new factories such as Admiral, Borden and The Hunter Boat Company. The Fox River helped facilitate the import and export of lumber, cigars, clay, food products and brewing which all helped draw new residents to the area. The drainage of a large 60 acre pond that previously divided the community in half, contributed to increased development and improved roadways, while the railroad allowed commuters to find this area the perfect place to settle with their families.

Situated at the mouth of the Fox River with more than 2 miles of shoreline, the community was first settled in 1841. Determination and hard work helped Johnsburg become the thriving Village it is today, known as the “Hometown with Spirit.” Our residents are neighborly and charitable, always willing to lend a helping hand. McHenry Landmark Commission Presents The Colby- Petersen Farm In 1842 Page Colby left the stony ridges of Danville, Vermont and headed west to the rich farmlands of Illinois. He purchased 80 acres along McCullom Lake Road in McHenry for $130. The property boasted a grove of Savannah oak trees that still stand today and a view of a little glacial lake now known as McCullom Lake.

He built a farmhouse in the Greek revival style which distinguished itself with the added half story.

Page married Mehitabel Elizabeth Smith on October 11, 1843, bringing his bride to his stylish new home. Mehitabel Colby had a main room, rustic kitchen and a stack stone basement. As the years passed the family added 800 acres to the homestead as well as several structures to the property. These included a hay barn, house barn and granary, wooden silos, chicken coop, hog pen and a shed. As the farm grew in acreage so did the family with six children and the house with additions including an indoor bathroom.

The farm is especially significant to McHenry because five generations of the same family lived there for 159 years from 1843 until 2002 with the death of Robert Petersen.

The Petersen Family, descendants of the Colby’s, donated land to the City of McHenry and later the city purchased the remainder of the homestead.

The City of McHenry’s Landmark Commission continuously works toward restoring the farmstead as a living museum to show what pioneer farm life was like a century ago in the Midwest. The Manufacturing Committee kicked off the celebration with an EXPO produced by Carl

Vallianatos of McHenry School District 156 and Doug Martin of the City of McHenry on September 22nd. The EXPO, held at McHenry High School’s East Campus, showcased to students and parents the opportunities a career in manufacturing or

Manufacturing Day, a little known or recognized holiday, was celebrated on October 7th of 2016.

Known nationally and internationally but not well at home, read the following and be amazed at the talent we have in McHenry County!

T

he Wonder Lake Water Ski Show Team has been in existence since 1955 and has performed shows for their home crowd since 1959.

In 1986, the team took on a new perspective and began competing in tournaments. To this day, their primary objective is to perform to the best of their ability and entertain crowds. Proudly boasting to be the 1996, 2000, 2001, 2010 and 2016 National Show Ski Champions.

The Wonder Lake Water Ski Show Team has consistently finished in the top six places at

the National Tournament, and also held the Regional title several times throughout the years! The Wonder Lake Water Ski Show Team from Wonder Lake, Illinois is comprised of about 140 members primarily from the local community.

About half of these are skiing members. The rest of the team is supporting. The Membership consists of all ages, moms, & dads, brothers & sisters, sons & daughters, husbands & wives, aunts & uncles, cousins, neighbors but most importantly Friends.

The WLWSST is proud to have had a history of professional water skiers performing all across the world. Ski shows at Sea World, Cypress Gardens, Tommy Bartlett’s, Water Ski Show Inc. World Entertainment, and many others. Our skiers have performed for professional shows in Florida, Ohio, California, Louisiana, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Australia, Germany, Malaysia, Japan, and others.

The Fox River and Chain of Lakes offer many recreational features including boating and fishing. Many of our local restaurants and riverwalk offer docking availability and launching can be gained at McHenry’s Miller Riverfront Park and Waterfront Marina in Johnsburg.

Veterans Park Summer Concert The Riverwalk offers pleasant strolls along the Fox River and Boone Creek connecting downtown shops and restaurants.

McHenry Township offers programs all year long including its Fall Octoberfest and Touch a Truck programs. During the winter months a great 300 foot sledding hill is open where the adults enjoy sledding just as much as their children.

McHenry Conservation Area operates Glacial Park characterized by its rolling prairie, delta kames, oak savanna and the tranquil presence of the meandering Nippersink Creek.

cHenry Area Chamber of Commerce brought over 300 people into the downtown area through its new Downtown Uncorked afternoon wine tasting. Save the date for this sold out show on September 16, 2017.

Patrons enjoyed wine tasting and samples from our area

restaurants but most of all shopping in downtown McHenry. Downtown Uncorked is just one of many events celebrating McHenry’s fine shops and restaurants.
