A summer spent on the boat is a season well spent.

I grew up spending summer holiday weekends at my best friend’s dock, eating cold watermelon slices and waiting not so patiently for my next turn on the boat. So, when I heard about the chance to work on a recreation guide for the Chain O’ Lakes region, I jumped at the chance.

Shaw Media’s first Chain O’ Lakes Recreation Guide is a resource for your stay in the area, whether this is your first visit or you’ve been coming here for decades and need new recommendations. You’ll find everything from local campgrounds on P. 8 to wildlife on P. 10. For an introduction to the state park and the lakes that make up the Chain, simply turn the page.

Get to know the ‘WATER WONDERLAND’ The Chain O’ Lakes region is known for its boating, fishing and fun

n the land of prairies and cornfields, visitors flock to Chain O’ Lakes to enjoy what the Illinois Department of Natural Resources calls a “water wonderland.” The name refers to the multiple waterways connecting the region with access to lakes including Grass, Marie, Nippersink, Bluff, Fox, Pistakee, Channel, Petite, Catherine and Redhead as well as the Fox River.

The area includes McHenry and Lake counties.

the Chain O’ Lakes area from Chicago for their vacation homes. Over time more people started to make it their full-time residence. In the last few years, the interest in the area as a recreation destination has been on the rise. Kroll says last year they met people from 37 different states and four different countries.

Perhaps the most popular way to enjoy the area is on the water. Steve Kroll is the owner of Wet N Wild Outfitters, which includes rentals for kayaks as well as guided tours of the water and fishing experiences. Kroll grew up in the area and remembers when many people came to

Visitors to the region might say the water might appear “murky,” Kroll says; with the shallow waters, activity can often dredge up the mud at the bottom, but in fact the waters are among the cleanest thanks to years of working to care and protect the waterways.

Central to the area is Chain O’ Lakes State Park, which includes 6,500 acres of water and 488 miles of shoreland as well as a 44-acre lake. The park is an ideal place to explore by boat, foot, bike and horse. With plenty of spots to enjoy a snack or picnic, too, it’s a great way to enjoy a day.

Wet N Wild Outfitters offers rentals, including shuttles that bring people and equipment to the water and pick them up. One of the most popular tours starts at Glacial Park and travels through Richmond and out to the Chain O’ Lakes. Also check out his monthly fishing school, where his guide brings people out on the Nippersink and Pistakee to cast their lines.

Paddleboards have also become a more popular activity on the lakes, as a great way to experience the calm lake waters.

For those who prefer their watercrafts with engines, check out locally owned Turtle Beach Marina in Antioch, where Mark and Jennifer Willer and Tim and Rachel Cope rent pontoon boats, jet skis, wave runners and a few kayaks too. The marina is one of the few with a sandy beach located on Channel Lake.

Boaters love to visit the marina for its tiki bar, making it a great place to stop as they travel around the area, but it’s accessible by car and foot as well.

“Pontoons are a favorite option for larger groups, and it offers the chance to relax and float along the waterways,” Mark Willer says. To rent a boat or jet ski, one needs a boater safety certificate, he adds.

Turtle Bay Marina offers boat slips, winter storage and boat maintenance. Willer says while boating is fun, there is a lot of care required, and for those seeking a once or twice a year excursion, rentals can be a more convenient and economical choice.

Camping options abound, especially near the lakes

here’s no need to drive far for your stay — within and nearby Chain O’ Lakes State Park is a handful of excellent options.

Now all you need is a tent and some s’mores!

WITHIN CHAIN O’ LAKES STATE PARK 8916 Wilmot Road, Spring Grove Within the park are six camping areas, which feature a pair of loops with electric and three loops of nonelectric for a total of more than 200 sites. In addition, the park also features a youth group area that includes space for up to 150. Showers, toilets, electric hookups and more are available at or near the various campground sites, and don’t worry — your (quiet) canine family members are allowed, too.

n Honey Suckle Hollow is conveniently located close to a boat launch and just east of Turner Lake. This prime location has 86 premium cabin, tent and RV sites. Up to six guests allowed per site. n Fox Den offers 40 tent, RV and trailer camping sites in a loop within Chain O’ Lakes Park. It is beautifully located in the center of the state’s largest group of lakes. Up to four guests allowed per site. n Turner Lake South provides camping options just footsteps away from the lake. Those

who want to wake and bait do not have to wander far from their sleeping bag — bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass, walleye and more are ready and waiting for the great anglers in your party. n Prairie View is near a volleyball court, offering recreational opportunities in the great outdoors.

This campsite features 31 premium sites south of Turner Lake. Up to four guests allowed per site. n Mud Lake East is the smallest campground area within the park and offers tranquility within its 12 sites. n Mud Lake West is a special camp area for kids and can accommodate up to 150.

AN ABUNDANCE OF WILDLIFE

B

irding enthusiast Beau Schaefer says the Chain O’ Lakes region is an exceptional place to enjoy birding.

“There is a huge variety of birds,” he says, adding the treelined trails and marshy areas make great places to spot them.

Recently birders have spotted some species that aren’t local to the area, including the limpkin, which is commonly found in Florida but was spotted in the region about a year ago.

In addition to the park’s programming and bird watching activities, visitors can check out groups like the McHenry County Audubon Society, which has bird walks and events.

According to the McHenry County Audubon Society’s latest birding tallies, there are approximately 239 species of birds that call Chain O’ Lakes State Park home.

One of the advantages to the region is the ability to see wildlife from different perspectives, from walking along the trails to kayaking the waters — and even viewing from horseback.

Within the park is Chain O’ Lakes State Park Stables, where visitors can arrange horse and pony rides. Rides vary from 45 minutes up to two hours, and each riding group has its own ranger to assist and lead.

Stable owner Becky Wesinger has been riding horses at the park’s stables since she was a girl; today, she continues to ride and help others experience the beauty. “It’s the best way to see the park,” Wesinger says. “You can see so much wildlife too.”

Wesinger notes the horse trails go places that vehicles can’t travel, providing a better view of wildlife including foxes, birds and coyotes. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely ride through the park or chat up the rangers about the park and horses.

Inside the park visitors can spot small mammals like beavers, skunks, foxes, chipmunks and rabbits. Schaefer says he even caught a glimpse of a weasel during a visit to the area.

Visitors can also try to catch sight of deer or coyotes.

The Chain is home to bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, muskie, northern pike, bullhead, catfish, and yellow and white bass. A visit to this area is also sure to include sightings of butterflies, dragonflies and other insects, as well as a chance to see a turtle sunning itself on the rocks or hear the sounds of peeping frogs and toads.

While Chain O’ Lakes State Park is a central part of the region, there are more lakes, forest preserves and parks one can explore, each with their own attributes, from marshes to woods to prairies — and all connected by the scenic waterways.

e all know the Chain O’ Lakes region is a great locale to get away for the day, some weekend R&R or, if you’re lucky, maybe even the whole summer. Whatever the case and whatever your taste, your getaway plans will likely include the search for the perfect spot to sip a cocktail or mocktail, savor a glass of wine, down a draft or throw back a bottle.
