MORRIS – In 10 years as a journalist, I’ve come across what seems like hundreds of career women easily classified as a Woman of Distinction.

Executive directors of area nonprofits, church pastors, economic developers, secretaries, editors, CEOs, county board members, educators, nurses, school bus drivers – you name it and a local woman has ruled it.

What made them distinctive varied depending on the person – some rocked their job and managed to volunteer, others could own a room in minutes, some simply were the kindest people I’ve ever encountered and many were working mothers.

I thought I knew what a working mother entailed – balancing a job and raising children. Never did I think this was easy, but until I had my son this year, I had no idea its truly one of the hardest endeavors someone can do.

There’s the obvious struggle of leaving your child with someone other than you – a daily serving of guilt to go with your morning coffee.

But then there is the everyday balance of trying to be the best mother you can on top of attempting to continue to excel at your job as you did before giving birth.

If I could go back in time when I first encountered all these women I’ve admired throughout the years, rather than adoring from afar I would tell them, “I think you’re a god – god of changing diapers and attending business meetings,” or maybe “god of keeping your sanity.”

What I can do now is encourage our readers who know women like this or any woman who deserves some recognition for her hard work, volunteerism, community efforts, kindness and for whatever else that makes her a Woman of Distinction – and nominate her for the Morris Herald-News’ and Herald Life’s Women of Distinction

A committee will narrow down the nominations to three recipients, who will be recognized at a luncheon in their honor. By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – With more than 70 people within earshot, Morris Community High School Band Director Jeff Muraida took to center stage, singing to raise money for his band students.

In the back party room, Muraida sang twice with the band led by Pastor Roy Backus and supporting musicians Erik Olson, Clifford Hunt, Jeff McMillin and Scott Kindelspire.

Band parents, alumni, school staff and students gathered to support this event.

On Saturday at Clayton’s Tap in downtown Morris, Julie Buck launched the Band Boosters Bash to raise money for the school band. According to Muraida, this year the band is hoping to purchase a new sound system and its own trailer they can customize to fit their needs, to the tune of $11,000.

Saturday’s event raised $2,300 toward the purchase, Buck said Sunday.

“This is a great way for adults to get together, and raise money to do important things.

Car wash for charity MORRIS – A “Free Car Wash” sign on display Saturday morning along Route 6 in Morris attracted numerous vehicles to pull into the Morris Jewel-Osco store, where volunteers for Hands of Dignity and Hope Outreach washed vehicles in hopes of earning donations for the new organization.

Hands of Dignity and Hope Outreach is based in Morris and aims to help Grundy County residents in need with school supplies, dignity packs, and Christmas presents, as well as other needs along the way, President Kathy Dillard said. The organization received its nonprofit status in April. The car wash Saturday was its third fundraiser and will go toward providing school supplies for area families.

COAD presents benefits to Grundy County planners

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – The Grundy County Area Planners heard a presentation last week on disaster planning and how the local committee can be of help.

The Community Organizations Active in Disaster committee for Grundy County, or COAD, was introduced Thursday by the Grundy County Emergency Management Agency during the planners’ meeting at First Presbyterian Church in Morris.

“We wanted to come to the village and city councils in Grundy County to formally roll out this committee plan this summer, but then the tornado in Coal City hit on June 22, so we had a baptism by fire,” COAD presenter Ken Buck said. “Now we are coming back and giving you the nuts and bolts of what it is all about.”

Ken Buck talked to the government, church and school officials, as well as community members and local fire and law enforcement, about the COAD committee and what it means

for the county.

“The reason for COAD is not to replace EMA, first responders and government entities in times of disaster, but to fill the gaps during the response phase, and be more involved in recovery,” he said. “We always have spontaneous volunteers, which are important, but they need to be managed for safety.”

Julie Buck, executive director of Community Foundation of Grundy County and COAD volunteer, said the committee can pull together local nonprofits and/or regional, state and national nonprofits, depending on the size of the disaster.

Common services provided by the committee include volunteer management, shelters, animal shelters, call centers, cash and non-cash donation management, mental health counseling and feeding disaster families, volunteers and first responders, she said.

According to Kelly Hitt, Medical Reserve Corps coordinator for Grundy County, the creation of the committee began when she approached EMA Director Joe Schroeder to discuss requirements of

the Medical Reserve Corps to develop a volunteer and donations management plan.

“Part of that plan is to work toward a larger pre-registered, pre-trained group of emergency volunteers. After lessons learned from emergencies we have unfortunately had in Grundy County, we want to have a large registry of individuals become pre-registered before any future emergencies occur,” Hitt said.

Ken Buck wanted to present to the area planners meeting to pull together resources in building the response teams.

“We need you people to reach out to the groups you are involved in, and who you know in the community, so we can create resource lists, develop operating procedures, develop a local leadership team with bylaws, procedures and rules, and train those groups who are interested,” he said.

Using groups in the community such as churches, schools and civic groups will be beneficial to ensure a large pool of people who offer a variety of services during a disaster, Ken Buck said.

“We are amazed what resources are out there,” he said.

He also said COAD is important because the committee will “know the players at the table, and when disaster strikes, we already know who we need to call upon. It’s about collaboration, communication and coordination.”

The committee also will run a Facebook page to communicate to the public after a disas-

ter strikes to release accurate information in a timely manner.

“People listen to scanners and get misinformation, or want to come down and help immediately after a tornado hits. This social media page will inform and keep people at bay until the first responders have done their work and volunteers are needed,” Julie Buck said.

Hussey said most colleges ask for at least two years of Spanish from their applicants, and others require three or four. That’s why he doesn’t want to limit his students by not having a class available.

COAL CITY – After not receiving any applications to fill the open part-time Spanish teacher position at Coal City High School, administrators decided to get creative.

They spoke with Morris Community High School officials, who also were looking for a Spanish teacher, and decided to find one applicant to fill both part-time positions.

“For the half-time Spanish teacher position we had zero applicants,” Coal City Superintendent Kent Bugg told board members during a work-

shop Wednesday.

At Morris Community High School the search hasn’t fared much better. MCHS Principal Kelly Hussey said Thursday there are a lot of language positions open in teaching, which makes finding a part-time teacher difficult.

The shared position was posted by Coal City Community Unit School District 1 and the applicant chosen will be hired by Coal City.

Morris Community High School will reimburse Coal City for the hours the teacher is needed in Morris, as well as help with mileage reimbursement.

Continued from page 3 shared the bands’ new concept of performance, using a company called Center X Production for the marching band show.

“In a way, the marching band is new. Now it is not just music, but we will portray a concept of a show to the audience musically,” Muraida said. “It’s a more involved concept, bringing competition to a new level.”

According to the Center X Productions Web site, “Center X’s original compositions aren’t for everyone. Rest assured, it is the group who wants to make a statement and stand out from the crowd that will thrive.”

Colorguard coach Laura Zomboracz said the show is incredible when combining the band and colorguard with flags, rifles and saber.

“The flags are a stainedglass theme, and with the stunning costumes, it’s visually appealing,” she said.

Zomboracz said the show also is good for high schoolaged kids because it shows it is cool to be a good person, and shows positive character and uniqueness within the area.

“This is different than any competition or marching show, this is all new to Morris with the props and dancing,” she said.

Incoming freshman Emily Backus, daughter of Pastor Roy Backus and Ann Backus, is beginning her high school band career with this new performance style.

“I play the French horn and have since I was in the fourth grade. This year is pretty cool so far having the flag people show dance and moves for the show,” Emily said.

The event wrapped up after 9:30 p.m. The total amount raised Saturday was not available by press time.

Buck said other events the band boosters host are car washes, and soliciting cash donations. Last year, the Band Boosters Bash helped raise $5,000 to help purchase new uniforms.

Dale E. Talkington, age 58, late of Morris, and formerly of Minooka, passed away suddenly, Saturday, August 1, 2015, at Morris Hospital.

Born July 3, 1957, in Joliet, he was a life long area resident, and a 1975 graduate of Minooka High School.

He worked for Flint Hills Resources as a chemical operator from 1991 to the present, and was a proud member of the Fire Brigade there for many years.

Dale enjoyed fishing and the outdoors, but his passion was playing

Singer Cilla Black dies at 72

By JILL LAWLESS The Associated Press LONDON – Big-voiced British singer Cilla Black, a product of Beatles-era Liverpool who became a national treasure over a 50-year music and television career, has died.

She was 72.

Spanish police said Sunday that the singer died Saturday at her home in Estepona, southern Spain. Black’s spokesman, Nick Fiveash, confirmed her death and said details would be released after a coroner’s report was completed.

Former Beatle Paul McCartney said news of Black’s death came as a shock. “She had a fine distinctive voice and was always a bit of a laugh. It was a privilege to know and love her,” McCartney said in a statement.

Ringo Starr tweeted: “She was a good friend we will all miss her.”

Black was born Priscilla White in Liverpool, northwest England, in 1943.

As a teenager she sang part-time and worked in the cloakroom of the Cavern Club, where her musical talent was spotted by rising local stars The Beatles.

Signed by the Fab Four’s manager, Brian Epstein, she had a string of hits starting in 1964 with “Anyone Who Had a Heart,” written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and “You’re My World.” Both went to No. 1 in Britain, and the latter also charted in the U.S. She also had success with the Bacharach-David theme tune for the 1966 film “Alfie,”

warming-reunion program “Surprise Surprise” (between 1984 and 2001).

“She always felt like a friend in your living room, on your TV screen,” television executive Michael Grade told Sky News.

In a tweet, her friend Joan Collins called Black “a resplendent and rare talent.”

Black’s manager and husband of 30 years, Bobby Willis, died in 1999.

She is survived by their three sons.

“Rowdy” Roddy Piper, the kilt wearing trash-talker who headlined the first WrestleMania and later found movie stardom, died Friday.

He was 61.

The WWE confirmed the death. The wrestling organization provided no additional de- “Rowdy” Roddy tails.

Piper’s death also comes days after Hulk Hogan, his biggest rival for decades, was fired by the WWE. Hogan had used racial slurs in a conversation captured on a sex tape.

Piper and Hogan battled for years and headlined some of the biggest matches during the 1980s. Hogan and Mr. T beat Piper and Paul Orndorff on March 31, 1985, at the first WrestleMania at Madison Square Garden in a bout that featured Muhammad Ali as the guest referee.

Piper was a villain for the early portion of his career, once cracking a coconut over the skull of Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka in a segment for his popular WWF talk show called “Piper’s Pit.” He later

starred in the movie “They Live” and continued acting for most of the next three decades. WWE chairman Vince McMahon called Piper “one of the most entertaining, controversial and bombastic performers ever in WWE, beloved by millions of fans around the world.”

Piper’s son, Colt Toombs, posted to Twitter: “My father @R_Roddy_Piper was a great man and my best friend I will miss him forever and will always try to be the man he raised me to be.”

Piper also went by the nickname “Hot Rod” during his career. Although he was Canadian, he often appeared in a kilt and came to the ring blowing bagpipes in a nod to his Scottish heritage.

Piper inspired UFC fighter Ronda Rousey to take the “Rowdy” nickname. Piper was touched Rousey used the name and the MMA fighter paid tribute to him on her social media feeds before Saturday’s UFC card.

“Thank you for the name ... and so much more. ... Will do it justice and do you proud tomorrow,” she wrote.

Piper was best known for his lengthy career with the World Wrestling Federation, now the WWE. “Saddened about the passing of “Rowdy” Roddy Piper,” tweeted Paul “Triple H” Levesque, a wrestler and top WWE executive. “He was truly a legend and icon, and will never be forgotten... #ThankYouRoddy #RIP.”

Taste of Dwight set for Sunday MORRIS HERALD–NEWS DWIGHT – The Dwight Economic Alliance and its members are sponsoring Taste of Dwight Sunday in Renfrew Park. Participating businesses will showcase their goods and services. The activities will begin at noon with food, beverages and entertainment made available until 8 p.m.

Bingo cards will be available at the red tent housing the Dwight Economic Alliance.

When visiting the businesses represented at the fair, a space will be marked on the card.

When all spaces are filled, the card may be returned to the red tent for a chance to win a prize, according to a news release.

Get ready to play more of the name game VIEWS Rob Oesterle As the calendar turns to August and fall draws near, it brings back thoughts of leaves turning color and kids returning to school.

In my world, that means high school sports are going to resume soon.

The start of the high school football season also is close to the beginning of the NFL season, and with the NFL back on the front burner comes the discussion of the Washington Redskins nickname and whether they should keep it or get rid of it.

This has relevance around here as well, since Morris Community High School shares the same nickname as the Washington NFL franchise.

The easy answer to the problem is to just change the nickname. It’s been done around the country as high schools have been doing away with nicknames that could be considered offensive to some groups and going with more politically correct monikers.

STAFF REPORTS LAFAYETTE, Indiana – After rolling through the Region tournament on its home field last week, the Channahon Mustang 10U baseball team took its turn at the Zone tournament this past weekend.

Things started well for

Channahon when they defeated WEA of Indiana, 17-0, in their first game Thursday.

That put them up against host Lafayette, Indiana in the second round Friday. Channahon walked away from that with a 14-7 win.

Saturday wasn’t as kind to Channahon.

In the semifinals, Channahon lost to Mt. Vernon, Illinois by a 13-3 score, which forced the Mustangs to play against Tri-Village, Michigan, and had to earn a rematch against Mt. Vernon for the title.

Unfortunately, that did not happen, as Tri-Village col-

lected a 14-4 win to eliminate Channahon from the running.

Tri-Village beat Mt. Vernon, 10-1, on Sunday, forcing a winner-take-all game.

Mt. Vernon rebounded from the loss to score an 11-3 victory and earn a berth in the World Series in Youngsville, Louisiana.

They’ve taken care of business for four months – including a four-game sweep in Milwaukee they finished with a 4-3 victory at Miller Park on Sunday. And they’ve added two pitchers at the trade deadline.

Sunday’s victory, behind the six innings of spot starter Clayton Richard, closed out a 20-game stretch against losing teams in which the Cubs went 11-9 – finishing with five straight victories and reaching 10 games over .500 for the first time since 2008.

Now comes the more intense heat of August, what manager Joe Maddon suggests might be the biggest challenge of the season for his young team. It starts with a week of games against playoff-tested Pittsburgh and San Francisco that could be an early windsock for the Cubs’ direction down the stretch.

“I love it. I think it’s great,” said Maddon, whose team on Sunday caught the Giants in the race for the National League’s second wild card spot – and trail the Pirates by five games for the first wildcard spot. “To really ascend in a division, you have to play the better teams within your group and beat them.

“And to beat them where they live is important, too. It’s

really kind of fun. I think it’s a blast.”

It’s a different Pirates team than the one the Cubs last saw in May, as Maddon pointed out Sunday. Three days after the Cubs’ last meeting with Pittsburgh – in the Cubs’ series victory at Wrigley Field – the Pirates dropped to 18-22.

They’re 43-21 (.672) since then. The Cubs are 35-30 over the same stretch – and they’re also a team with a different look, with rookie Kyle Schwarber in the everyday lineup and two new pitchers added in

deadline trades Friday.

Whether they have Kris Bryant for Monday’s series opener will depend on how he fares when he’s examined again for concussion symptoms Monday morning.

Bryant left the game in the fifth inning after hitting his head on shortstop Jean Segura’s led on a head-first slide, and said he felt better after the game. He hasn’t been diagnosed with a concussion, and the Cubs are optimistic that’ll remain the case Monday.

The biggest difference be-

tween the Cubs and Pirates – and the Cubs and Giants – is the October track records that figure to measure the Cubs this week.

“There’s definitely an advantage,” said Maddon, who took the Tampa Bay Rays to all four of their playoff appearances during his nine years managing there. “Been there, done that – when it comes to winning, no question [it’s an advantage].

World Series or not, just getting to the playoffs could pay off in a big way.

Last week, we looked at responder’s redouble after partner opened one of a suit and the next player made a takeout double.

If the opening bid was one of a major, we learned that responder’s redouble denied four-card or longer support for that major. So, what does responder do with four or more trumps?

First, if he has a weak hand with below game-invitational values, he usually follows the Law of Total Tricks, jumping to the four-level with five-card support, or, as in today’s deal, bidding three of the suit with four trumps.

How weak North may be is a matter for partnership agreement and gastric fortitude!

South, with a promising hand, takes a shot at four spades, a bid not insured by Lloyd’s of London. How should he plan the play after West leads the heart king?

The South hand has six losers: two hearts, one diamond and three clubs.

Given that the club finesse is surely losing, declarer has only two side-suit winners and needs eight trump tricks.

He must play a crossruff.

South should win the first trick and immediately lead his diamond.

The defenders do best to cash two heart tricks before shifting to a trump, but it is to no avail. Declarer wins in the dummy, ruffs a diamond in his hand, cashes the club ace, and crossruffs home.

For the curious, confirm that a trump lead at trick one can defeat the contract.

Weight-loss drugs often come with many caveats Dear Dr. K: I take medications for high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I am also obese, which is another risk factor for heart disease.

Should I be on a weight-loss drug?

Dear Reader: You’re right that being obese can put a heavy burden on your heart.

It boosts your heart attack risk by about 60 percent. Diet and exercise are always the first steps toward controlling excess weight and other heart disease risk factors.

When lifestyle changes aren’t enough, doctors often prescribe medications, like statins for high cholesterol.

But the medical options for weight loss are more limited.

What’s more, weight-loss drugs are only moderately ef-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff fective. On average, they help people lose about 5 percent of their body weight over a period of six to 12 months. But the response varies widely.

Some people may lose a lot of weight on a particular drug.

Others may lose little or none.

And we don’t yet have the tools to determine who will do well on a particular drug and who won’t. So it’s trial and error.

You may be a good candidate for a weight-loss medication if you have a body mass index (BMI) higher than 30, which is considered obese.

(Go to www.health.harvard. edu/bmi to calculate your BMI.) You may also benefit if you have a BMI of 27 or higher along with health problems related to your weight. These include Type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure or chronic joint pain. Finally, you may need weight-loss drugs if you are overweight and have been unable to lose weight despite eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly.

There are several FDA-approved weight-loss drugs on the market. I’ve put a table listing these drugs and how they work on my website, askdoctork.com.

In some cases, health conditions other than obesity influence which medication

your doctor will prescribe.

For example, a person with Type 2 diabetes might benefit from liraglutide (Saxenda).

This injectable medication is also used to treat diabetes. On the other hand, a person with a fast heartbeat shouldn’t take phentermine (Adipex-P, Ionamin). This drug can speed up the heart.

As a general rule, you must lose at least 5 percent of your weight within three months in order to keep taking a particular weight-loss drug. If you don’t, your doctor may prescribe a different drug, or a combination of two or more drugs.

Because weight-loss medicines have not proven dramatically effective, and because some new medicines

have caused serious health problems, many doctors think it is a pipe dream to believe we will ever have a drug that safely and powerfully helps us to lose weight.

I’m more optimistic.

Scientific research in the past 20 years has made major advances in understanding the body chemistry that controls weight and appetite.

It wouldn’t surprise me if that research leads to powerful and safe weight-loss drugs in the next 20 years. However, a healthy diet and regular exercise are always going to be important, too.
