Getting married and a new last name As I briefly noted in last week’s column, I got married in October.

I’m still on cloud nine!

The ceremony and reception were local affairs. My husband, Fabian, and I got married at the Kane County Courthouse with a few close family members and friends in attendance.

And we had a somewhat nontraditional reception.

We invited guests to an “engagement/housewarming party” at our home the day after the wedding (having kept the actual wedding a secret from most people), thusly turning the party into a surprise wedding reception.

And what a party it was!

Duct tape and a family of hummingbirds “Mythbusters,” the TV show that debunks rumors, legends and pseudo-scientific claims, once did an episode on the many uses of duct tape. To summarize their findings, host Jamie Hyneman remarked that “Duct tape is not a perfect solution for anything. But with a little ingenuity, in a pinch, it’s an adequate solution for just about everything.”

Including, it turns out, saving a family of hummingbirds. Just ask Stephanie Frisque and her husband, John Kowal.

A few weeks ago, the Batavia couple had some tree work done – a little trimming and pruning, nothing really out of the ordinary.

At least that’s what they thought. But then one of the workers noticed a teeny tiny nest on one of the downed branches.

Stephanie said the structure was about as big as a sushi roll (which, for nonsushi lovers, equates to about 2 inches across and maybe 1 inch deep), an absolutely exquisite creation of lichens and plant down held together with sticky spider silk.

As a place to raise a family, it had every quality a hummingbird could ask for. Except it was lying on the ground – with two wee hummers inside.

Thankfully, the tree trimmers acted quickly and moved the limb out of harm’s way. The question that loomed, however, was, “Now what?”

I don’t know if anybody on the scene that day watches “Mythbusters” or not, but it wasn’t long before they arrived at an “adequate” solution to this most puzzling predicament: Duct tape!

The crew hoisted the branch back up whence it came and taped it in place.

The angle was a bit odd, but the magical adhesive held fast. Then, however, a new concern arose. What if the mom wouldn’t come back?

GOOD NATURED Pam Erickson Otto Stephanie said she never did see mom anywhere near the nest, and worried at first that their fears were confirmed. She even spent a fair amount of time wondering whether she should try and find a hummingbird rescuer to come out and intervene. But as the hours stretched into days, something became apparent: The little birds were doing just fine! Thriving, even, despite their rock-a-bye-baby-style introduction to the world.

A hummingbird mom (dad is off on his own by the time the kids arrive) feeds her nestlings a steady diet of insects – a protein-laden food source even adult hummers consume. (Show of hands. Who thought those long, pointy bills were only used for sipping nectar?)

Visiting the nest one to three times each hour, the female wastes no time shuttling food to her brood. In fact, even while at the nest, she typically just hovers before flying off again. This behavior not only makes for faster trips, but also serves to not draw attention to the well-concealed nest. Plus, it saves the bird from trying to perch using its weak legs and mini-feet. (Fun fact No.1: Hummingbirds belong to the order Apodiformes, which translates to “no feet.” While that’s not exactly true – the feet are there, just much reduced – it does help explain the bird’s well-known habit of hovering. Chimney swifts, which don’t hover, but rather perch by hanging vertically, are another famous member of this group.)

Then came the day when they weren’t in the nest at all, but rather out on the branch – still duct-taped to

The take-away from Stephanie and John’s story is twofold. One, when left to their own devices, wild parents are perfectly capable of caring for their offspring, even when it seems like the odds are against them. The old baby wildlife adage, “If you care, leave them there,” applies in nearly every case, except those where the parents are clearly injured or deceased. Human knowledge is a poor substitute for animals’ instincts.

gone – fledged and flying free. All that remained of the incident was the skewed nest, looking somewhat the worse for wear, tilting precariously on the duct-taped branch.

Geneva man maintains his innocence

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Shadwick King maintained his innocence minutes before a Kane County judge Friday sentenced him to 30 years in prison for killing his wife.

“I never laid a hand on her, not one time,” the Geneva man said. “I did not kill my wife. To the day I die, I did not do it.”

In March, a 12-member jury found Shadwick King, 48, guilty of first-degree murder in the death of his wife.

Prosecutors presented evidence that sometime after 5 a.m. July 6, 2014, Shadwick King asphyxiated his wife, Kathleen King, at their home, killing her. The 32-year-old’s body was found that morning

on the Union Pacific tracks near the 200 block of Briar Lane and Esping Park in Geneva.

Judge James C. Hallock announced Shadwick King’s sentence – of which he must serve the entirety – after the court heard victim impact statements from members of Kathleen King’s family.

Relatives described her murder as a “heinous act of violence” that she didn’t deserve and said the impact of her loss is immeasurable.

Members of the gallery cried as Kathleen King’s relatives used such words as vivacious, radiant, bright and bubbly to describe their late niece, daughter and sister.

ing his daughter’s husband has “shown absolutely no remorse” about leaving her body to be mutilated on the railroad tracks.

Shadwick King, who was escorted to the witness chair to make his statement, called the situation an “unbearable tragedy” and described his wife as the “love of my life and best friend.”

His attorney, Kane County Public Defender Kelli Childress, spent Friday morning making a case for a new trial.

Hallock ruled early afternoon the conviction would stand.

“The court finds the state proved the defendant guilty beyond a reasonable doubt,” Hallock said to a full courtroom.

Childress took nearly three hours to state her case, which included arguments about “incessant” objections and errors by the state during the trial. Specifically, she said, the prosecution reserved factual arguments for its rebuttal, giving her no chance to respond.

“That error alone requires that Mr. King gets a new tri-

al,” she said.

The sentencing range was 20 to 60 years, Hallock said, citing statute. The prosecution said a 42-year sentence would be appropriate.

During the sentencing hearing, Childress said the loss of a beautiful young mother and wife is an enormous tragedy, but the “conviction of an innocent man is just as enormous.” She requested a sentence of 20 years.

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon stated in a news release the 30-year sentence was suitable.

“Mr. King committed the ultimate act of domestic violence in a fit of jealousy and rage,” McMahon stated in the release. “This sentence is a suitable price for Mr. King to pay, but it’s nothing compared to the cost borne by their children, who must live with the burden of their own father taking their mother from them. Although the sentence will not erase the hollow feeling that Kathleen’s family and friends have felt since her death, I do hope they see it as just.”

By ERIC SCHELKOPF BATAVIA – Those who attend Green Fair on the Fox on Aug. 8 in downtown Batavia will discover how they can be more environmentally friendly in their lives.

“It’s an eco advocacy event,” said Carolyn Burnham, who chairs Green Fair on the Fox. “It’s just a fun way to learn about sustainable living, healthy living and physical fitness in downtown Batavia.”

Green Fair on the Fox will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Batavia Riverwalk, the Peg Bond Center and the Batavia Government Center. Because Houston Street will be under construction starting next week, those who attend the event will have to use Island Avenue.

For the second year, an alternative transportation show will be part of the festival. The show will feature hybrid and electric and other alternatively fueled vehicles.

Burnham said the show was extremely popular last year.

“People loved it,” Burnham said. “When we did our surveys after the event, that was one of the favorite things that people liked about the event.”

Burnham also is a member of the Batavia Environmental Commission. She said Green Fair on the Fox is an outgrowth of the commission’s efforts.

This year, the Batavia Bi-

cycle Commission will host a bicycle show for the public. It will feature innovative bikes. Those interested can register their bikes for free on the Batavia Bicycle Commission’s website, www.bikingbatavia.org.

Turtles, lizards, snakes and other reptiles will be on display at Green Fair on the Fox as part of the Chicago Herpetological Society’s exhibit. People will be able to view the reptiles, as well as touch them, Burnham said.

“I think that when people understand the natural environment, they’re more likely to protect it,” Burnham said.

The event also will feature a free Zumba class at 9:30 a.m. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. There will be live entertainment starting at 11:30 a.m. on the Peg Bond Center stage.

Because of Houston Street construction, Burnham urged those who attend to walk or bike to the event.

There will be limited parking at the event, she said.

Batavia MainStreet is partnering with the Batavia Park District, city of Batavia and the Batavia Environmental Commission to present the festival.

This is the eighth year of the event, which previously was called the Batavia Green Walk. The event was renamed Green Fair on the Fox last year.

She was born May 17, 1984, in Fayetteville, NC. Danica was employed as a preschool teacher at Kensington School of St. Charles. She was heavily involved in Morning Star Community Church in Aurora and was a talented musician and crafter.

Batavia company sues former employee over trade secrets eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia Container Inc. has filed a lawsuit against a former employee, alleging he stole company secrets before he left to work for a competitor.

In the suit, the company claims Robert M. Dunn, of Batavia, stole trade secrets and confidential information belonging to Batavia Container. The suit also stated that Dunn’s alleged employment by Victory Packaging was in violation of the provisions of a noncompetition

agreement.

“The timing and the circumstances surrounding [Dunn’s] resignation of his employment with BCI and his immediate employment with Victory Packaging, together with [Dunn’s] alleged theft of [BCI’s] electronic files and data, raise the substantial likelihood that those electronic files and data and [BCI’s] trade secrets and confidential information were provided to Victory Packaging and/or other third parties,” the suit stated.

According to the lawsuit, Dunn admitted he initially

accepted employment with Victory Packaging, but claims his employment with Victory has been terminated.

Kane County Circuit Judge Thomas Mueller has ordered Dunn turn over a thumb/flash USB drive and to provide certain limited access to his personal Gmail account. A hearing on Batavia Container’s request for a temporary injunction against Dunn is set for Aug. 25.

Please, try this at home Missing Campton Hills teen Emily Czajkowski’s safe return to her family this week elicited much community rejoicing while summarily drawing ire from a number of online commenters.

Although Czajkowski ultimately emerged unharmed after a days-long search, her discovery at a friend’s house prompted some to question the great devotion of resources used to find her.

At the very least, we hope her loved ones have arranged a serious, substantial sit-down, something with a much firmer message than, “Don’t do this again.”

Missing persons cases hit the Tri-Cities elsewhere this week, with the brief disappearance of an elderly St. Charles Township man, Jessie Ray Baty, who was discovered alive in Wisconsin.

Someone who goes missing could ostensibly be anywhere, and the heart-wringing, terrorizing agony of the unknown that transpires until he or she is uncovered is hardly an enviable emotion.

The public, of course, can be affected, too. In the Czajkowski matter, the community effort to post signs, tie ribbons and arrange online funding measures reinforced the bond commonly seen in our family-friendly region, which is often lauded by national publications for its neighborliness.

We appreciated readers’ active outpouring of feedback on the story via social media this week – it’s the town square of the 21st century – and took note of several points of view.

Czajkowski’s safe return was paramount, no matter her whereabouts. After Czajkowski was found, her family decided to donate $1,340 to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, said Irene Sofil, a cousin of Czajkowski’s father, Jason.

The organization operates a 24-hour hotline, 1-800-THE-LOST, and advises those with missing children to first notify local law enforcement.

A search around the house – in closets, laundry piles, in and under beds, and inside of large appliances and vehicles – also is advised.

“Our family was so grateful that Emily was home safe, we want to help other families going through similar heartache,” Sofil wrote in an email to the Kane County Chronicle.

That’s certainly a commendable gesture in a case that offered many to go around. Still, the root cause for any child to leave his or her surroundings can be alarming.

If children are feeling upset with – or distant from – what’s happening domestically or around them, we offer this advice about open family dialogue: Please, kids, try this at home.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Don’t rush to decision

To the Editor: To say we are disappointed with the current possibility of the St. Charles City Council approving video gambling in our city is an understatement.

We realize the official term is “video gaming,” but let’s be honest enough to call it what it is, “gambling.”

We have been residents of the city of St. Charles for 41 years and made a decision to not move from here when we retired because St. Charles has been a community that valued a positive, healthy and safe lifestyle for its citizens. Allowing video gambling to be a part of our community does not fit that lifestyle. It is making money on people losing money, and – un-

fortunately – often the people who can least afford this, which can be to the detriment of their families.

The argument that adults should be allowed to make their own decisions about this is shallow at best. We all know that is why we don’t have bars open until 4 in the morning, strip clubs, etc. Just because people can choose doesn’t mean our community should offer those things that are detrimental to the lifestyle the majority of our residents value.

From what we understand about the city’s financial stability, there is no need to resort to video gambling as a revenue source to close budget gaps or save jobs. We would rather see a slight increase in

taxes, if truly needed, than have video gambling brought to St. Charles.

We believe the least that could be done by the council is to offer a referendum, survey or focus groups to determine if this is something our citizens want, not just what the tavern/ restaurant/club owners want.

The St. Charles City Council represents all the citizens, not just those whose businesses would benefit from the loss of people’s money through gambling. We would hope that no one wants to rush this decision. Let’s find out if video gambling is something St. Charles citizens want as part of their community.

Dear Kevin Matthews, I, too, was falsely accused of something years back. That was over 30 years ago, and it still lingers in me. I’m very sensitive about it. People keep telling me to just let it go. I can’t.

A couple of questions

I just saw that the missing 14-year-old girl from STC has been found in the home of the friend. I’m glad for the family that they can enjoy a happy resolution and not have to experience the loss of the daughter. However, today’s news begs a couple of questions: Will the girl’s family have to repay the city of STC for the cost of the wasted resources in this event? The second: How close are the parents of the household where the girl had been hiding? I mean, an extra 14-year-old person in the house surely is noticeable over the course of five days. Or were they even home and left a presumably 14- or 15-year-old boy home alone? If I was the parent of the young girl, I would

Dogs walking in the heat

I want to tell you, I was on State Street down in the business district, and I saw this couple walking with a cocker spaniel yesterday, and this poor thing is like five feet behind [them], panting like he can’t keep up. And I’m thinking, “Why do you take your dog out when it’s hot like this?” And “Why don’t they have something on their feet? Would they like to walk around without socks and shoes on this hot day?” I’ve seen a lot of people in Geneva, St. Charles that have their dogs walking in the heat, and I think it’s just terrible.

Good for Elburn

Good for Elburn! I’m really glad to see that some commissioners or some board members really question and think about what’s going on, and I’m talking about the Forest Preserve [District of Kane County].

They wanted to buy that nice piece of property up there right off 47 and take it off the tax rolls so that Elburn citizens and Kane County residents would have to make up the taxes. So, good for them for thinking it through and denying the forest preserve. So now let’s just hope the forest preserve doesn’t get nasty and condemn the property. That’s likely what these

obtrusive governments will do.

It’s like Geneva, Batavia and St. Charles. They’re all becoming very obtrusive and intrusive into our personal affairs, and they’re all money hungry and they’re all willing to give money to anybody and charge the residents for the privilege.

That hasn’t worked

I’m calling in regards to an article on [a recent] Friday about the League Of Women Voters in Kane County. Do these ladies really think that just raising taxes in every which way is going to help us get out of the state deficit ... ? Certainly, there’s other ways in working with the governor and coming up with ideas to clean house. [Cutting] back instead of raising taxes makes more sense. What are these people coming from with raising taxes, raising taxes?

First-pitch surprise Geneva’s Amore sees son at Cougars game after 6-month deployment

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Sports are everything to United States Air Force Technical Sergeaant Joe Amore and his 8-year-old son, Anthony.

But their game of catch Friday was a bit different than most.

After recently returning home safely from a six-month deployment in Kuwait, Joe had an idea to surprise his son at the Cougars game Friday night.

Joe Amore contacted Cougars director of public relations Shawn Touney and arranged for Anthony to throw the ceremonial first pitch.

Anthony Amore had been living with his mother in Florida, and after flying in, was ready to throw the first pitch to someone in a Cougars uniform.

However, he had no clue that his dad was the one dressed in full Cougars uniform and catcher’s gear.

Joe Amore caught the pitch before taking off his mask to a hug from Anthony Amore in front of a standing ovation from the crowd of 8,244 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

“When I called him, all we would talk about is sports,” Joe Amore said of his time overseas. “We’re pretty big Chicago sports fans and I thought it would be something cool. I was so stoked getting ready for this. I just couldn’t wait to see him and today was honestly a dream come true.”

“It was unbelievable how everything went down,” Joe Amore said. “The Kane County Cougars are a class organization ... that’s all I have to say.”

After spending the past 15 years serving the United States military, Joe Amore said he still has five years remaining,

so a future deployment is more than likely.

But for now, he will cherish every moment he has with his son. The 125-degree heat in Kuwait on a daily basis didn’t matter because nothing was going to break the bond between the Amores and their passion and love for sports.

‘NOT A NORMAL’ LUXURY Cougars’ six switch-hitters provide matchup problems

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – It’s not every day that a minor league team can put multiple switch-hitters in its lineup. But the Cougars have had more than a small luxury.

On the current roster, six Cougars have the ability to bat from both sides of the plate, a reality hitting coach Vince Harrison called quite uncommon.

“One thing we preach to them is that it’s not normal,” Harrison said. “We want to make sure it’s a tool and not something that hampers us as hitters. You try to stay in their ears about it but it’s nice because we can really play matchups. It doesn’t make us overthink as coaches when the other team goes to their [bullpen].”

For Friday’s Midwest League series opener against the Cedar Rapids Kernels,

Cougars switch-hitters Elvin Soto, C Henry Castillo, INF ldemaro Varags, INF Colin Bray, OF Victor Reyes, OF Chuck Taylor, OF Cougars manager Mark Grudzielanek had five switch-hitters penciled into the starting lineup against a left-handed starting pitcher.

One of the most challenging parts of being a switch-hitter in professional baseball is maintain a strong swing from both sides of the plate. In baseball, you can go a week, maybe two, without facing a left-handed pitcher, so it’s that much more important to stay on top of maintaining a strong swing.

Harrison said he works with the switch-hitters, but also instills in them that’s it’s

their responsibility to get in the necessary work in. Now in his second season in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization, he has tried to maintain the balance between helping but also letting the players take ownership.

“At the end of the day it’s their career,” Harrison said.

“You want to give the ownership to them, but I also have to do my job and stay on top of things.”

Many Cougars hitters began switch-hitting early not only to get ahead of the curve, but add something unique to their arsenal as a hitter.

Chuck Taylor, who entered Friday hitting .342 against right-handers this season, said he started switch-hitting as a sophomore in high school for something to add his to his resume.

“It’s always something I could do but never something I thought I could transfer over to the game,” Taylor said. “As

different as it is, it’s just like anything else. It’s a tool that you have to work on to perfect. Most of the switch-hitters in our lineup are good hitters, so it’s pretty easy to keep them in there regardless of what hand pitcher it is.”

Fellow outfielder Colin Bray is another regular who provides a bat from both sides of the plate. Bray would always swing from both sides in the cages, feeling he had a good enough swing, but it wasn’t until the year he was drafted, 2013, at Faulkner State Community College in Alabama, where he began to switch-hit during games.

Once he crossed over into a full-time switch-hitter, Bray said it was something he couldn’t give up on. He said taking swings each and every day to keep a balance is critical.

“It’s a huge benefit as a player and I wanted to give it a shot,” said Bray, whose

average is nearly an identical .292 from both sides of the plate in 2015. “If you’re going to do it, you have to stick with it, you know? We have a lot of guys that can do it, and it can make it hard to gameplan.”

Bray said many of the switch-hitters hit in the cage together, so they all can get equal swings from both sides.

Being around the players all season, Harrison said the coaches can see tendencies develop and realize which hitters are stronger from which side, but as long as the guys are putting the work in, that’s what Harrison and the Cougars want.

“We obviously know which guys hit lefties better, and that kind of thing,” Harrison said. “We have the double cages out there, so it gives them a good chance to get the reps that they aren’t getting during the games. They have done a pretty good job, so I can’t really complain.”

What’s allowing you to progress and keep pitching well?

It’s just really I’ve been working with (pitching coach Doug Bochtler) and the catchers, you know, knowing a lot about the teams that I face. …

It’s knowing the tendencies and working with catchers and Boch and getting and just kind of getting better every start. Trying to, at least.

Are you feeling your maturity coming along?

There’s that. … I just feel like every start, you just try a little better and try to go deeper into games.

Which pitches have been especially effective?

Weekend Chit-chat with COUGARS PITCHER BRAD KELLER Oh, really, just my fastball. Really, I like pitching off my fastball and trying to get outs off my fastball. …

You don’t really try to worry about velocity. You just try to go out there and compete.

It’s always nice to know, but I don’t really care for (watching the radar).

How have some of the older guys on the staff, guys like Markus (Solbach) and Ethan (Elias) helped in your development?

Yeah, in the bullpen, we watch each other’s bullpens and try to offer critique. And Michael Perez, he’s always critiquing. He’s a really good catcher. … (Elvin) Soto, I throw a lot to him in my bullpens. It seems that me and Perez are always together.

I mean, I don’t know why; I don’t have preferences. But it’s nice having a catcher that

you click with.

Did you anything special for the big 20th birthday (Monday)?

Just went down to Chicago with Ethan. Just had some fun down there, kind of hung out a little bit.

How close is home (Snellville, Georgia) to Atlanta?

Yeah, I’m, like, 30 minutes northeast of Atlanta. … My family’s come up here one time. They came right on Father’s Day. My brother’s come up here twice. When he was in school in Cincinnati, he just kind of drove over for a weekend and (later) came up with my family.

Fargo ends grueling wrestling stretch, doncha know?

Huston Street, the Los Angeles Angels closer who’s in the middle of a six-year, $43 million dollar contract, recorded his 300th save last week, becoming just the 27th pitcher in Major League Baseball history to reach the feat.

Cougars in 2004, the same year the then-parent Oakland A’s drafted him 40th overall.

He had a 1.69 ERA and four saves over nine appearances, striking out 14 and walking six in 10⅔ innings.

Wrestlers who finish in the top eight of their respective weight classes at the famed Fargo (N.D.) Nationals earn All-American status.

Nathan Traxler, a Marmion senior from St. Charles, took fifth in the 182-pound junior freestyle competition last week, and his immediate instinct was to brood.

That phase lasted only briefly, though, as Traxler realized just a few miles into the drive home that his tough love might have been too extreme.

“That’s real impressive to me, so I should be happy about that,” Traxler said.

“Can’t be down on myself about that.”

In a grueling sport that traditionally spits out most who even think of cutting corners, simply reaching Fargo provides an offseason pinnacle.

Several Kane County Chronicle-area athletes joined Traxler as part of Team Illinois, including Marmion teammates A.J. Jaffe and Trace Carello, who finished one match away from becoming junior All-Americans.

Marmion sophomore Sean McKenna was a cadet All-American.

Batavia’s Seth Winkle and Dylan Uzumecki also wrestled for Team Illinois’ junior age division.

“It’s a really tough tournament, and everyone wrestled really well,” Traxler said.

Games scarce, but baseball still on brain It felt strange to wake up and realize I wasn’t going to umpire any ballgames.

I didn’t work any games from Monday through Thursday of this week, but I still found myself being asked about the rules and umpiring just about every day.

For most of Monday evening, I was casually flipping through DirecTV’s MLB Extra Innings package, but I didn’t see the controversial home run by Jose Abreu of the White Sox. When I checked online later, I had several people asking me whether or not the umpires got it right, so I watched the footage there.

In case you missed it, Boston’s Mookie Betts appeared to make a running catch in right-center field, but he tumbled over the fence and the ball was jarred loose as he fell into the bullpen. The umpires on the field couldn’t see that he dropped the ball, but the video officials in New York could. They correctly awarded Abreu a home run.

I agreed with their call but quickly muted Hawk Harrelson’s delayed, “You can’t put it on the board … yes!”

Locally, I also saw something on the North Side recently that was debated.

Those who bleed Cubbie blue won’t like what they read, but the balk call on Kyle Hendricks on July 22 was correct. Manager Joe Maddon got tossed for arguing with umpire Adam Hamari. I don’t know what Maddon said to get the heave-ho, but I know Hamari was right. Kendricks deserved the balk by trying to

On Tuesday night, I went to see Graham Nash at the Arcada Theater in St. Charles.

While waiting in line someone shouted, “Hey, did you umpire at Westminster this weekend?” Indeed, I worked all day at the Elgin school Saturday. Thankfully, he didn’t argue about a call he believed I missed and simply said, “Hello.” I hadn’t been to the Arcada in years so I needed assistance from an usher, who just happened to be fellow umpire and Batavia resident Al Wywialowski.

We didn’t work together this year, although we were scheduled on one occasion before it rained buckets. We chatted for about 10 minutes about how we’ve fared this season before the lights dimmed and Nash opened with “Bus Stop” from The Hollies.

Late Wednesday night, my wife asked me about New York Mets shortstop Wilmer Flores crying on the field. It was prematurely reported that Flores had been traded to the Milwaukee Brewers.

She thought it was “weird but kind of sweet.” She didn’t feel the same way when Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt retired.

no crying in baseball.” I told her there’s plenty of whining in baseball though, especially when a team doesn’t have a call go their way. Aren’t crying and whining pretty much one and the same?

On Thursday, I sat and watched a four-hour Colorado Rockies-St. Louis Cardinals game while munching on Atomic Buffalo Turds. Now that’s some good eating, rest and relaxation, eh? While I was pleased with the outcome – a 9-8 Cardinals victory – I have to say that it was one of the ugliest games I’ve seen this year while either donning my gear or sitting on the couch. I honestly saw some better baseball in games I’ve umpired this year.

How does a team win despite its starter only lasting five innings, getting a runner picked off, another tagged out wandering past third after tripling and committing three errors? The Cardinals won via a bases-loaded walked in the bottom of the ninth because Rockies closer John Axford couldn’t throw strikes. I’ve been there before and I’m sure home plate umpire Paul Nauert felt great relief after calling ball four on a pitch that wasn’t even close to the

strike zone.

On Friday, fully refreshed after a four-day hiatus – at least off the field – I returned to umpiring baseball in an 18U wood bat tournament.

Boy, it felt great to be back.

Let me switch gears real quick. Recently, I was once again reminded that I’m getting old.

I didn’t umpire, but covered as a sportswriter, St. Charles East’s dramatic win against Libertyville in the Phil Lawler Summer Classic at North Central College. Afterward, I crossed paths with Zach Deutscher, who is now a graduate assistant coach for NCC. Deutscher is a former Batavia catcher, and I can recall umpiring his 10U games at Woodard Field more than 15 years ago.

Deutscher is now pursuing his master’s degree and ultimately hopes to coach high school baseball. Perhaps if Matt Holm ever steps down, Deutscher could step in replace him as coach at his alma mater.

MILWAUKEE – The Cubs front office got an aging rent-a-starter and a low-cost bullpen piece at Friday’s trade deadline after falling short in efforts to make bigger deals to help its teetering wild-card contender.

At the end of a frenzied final week of trades around game, the Cubs settled for finesse starter Dan Haren from the Marlins and right-handed setup man Tommy Hunter from the Orioles – eliciting mixed reviews from guys in the clubhouse, some of whom privately talked of expecting more.

Whether it was for lack of interest in their players or lack of overall resources, in the end it wasn’t for lack of effort, team president Theo Epstein said.

“We certainly were very aggressive in my mind packaging our prospects, especially for controllable, impact, major-league talent,” Epstein said, “including deals both in volume and impact – volume in big numbers of impactful prospects going the other direction. !"#$#%&#' ()*

MONTGOMERY – Former collegiate and American Basketball Association (ABA) player Raymond Anthony will hold tryouts for his Montgomery-based travel team, Elite Skillz Basketball.

The travel team will be made up of 13-15-year-old boys, and tryouts will be on Aug. 8 and 9 at Yorkville Middle School.

Anthony wants to remind all players and parents that this is a local travel team and games will all be within a one-hour drive and practices will be held on weekends.

“My approach is pretty uncommon and builds confidence as well as skill,” Anthony said in a press release. “It gets our players focused on bringing their absolute best to every practice. It teaches them to be ‘all in’ and it builds character.”

Growing bountiful bouquets One of my favorite things about being a gardener is the fact that I can step out my back door, and in a few snips, have an armful of fresh blooms to bring inside and turn into a pretty flower arrangement. Whether it’s a simple bunch of white hydrangeas or a colorful, carefree mix of annuals and perennials, I have made sure there is room in the garden for plenty of the things I love to cut.

When planning a cutting garden, start by thinking about the qualities that are most important to you in cut flowers.

Perhaps you have a penchant for blue and want a stately vase of delphiniums on the dining table. Or maybe you like to be greeted by the rich fragrance of lilacs or peonies as you come through the door each day, or the bright, cheerful faces of sunflowers in the kitchen while you sip your coffee in the morning.

Whatever look you like, it’s a safe bet there’s a flower for that. The best way to guarantee you’ll have blooms for the taking all summer long is to plant a mix of annuals and perennials. Your favorite perennials will return every year, and the annuals will add variety and extend your

Next, consider the space you have available for planting. Many of the flowers that perform well in arrangements need a site in full sun with good drainage.

Plant in rows, following spacing requirements for things you’ve chose, and be sure to leave room for getting between plants to pull weeds and eventually to harvest the flowers.

To prevent tall plants like hollyhocks and sunflowers from shading out lower-growing neighbors, place them at the back of the bed. Mulch your new bed to retain moisture in the soil and prevent weeds from sprouting up. And if you don’t have the space to create a new plot solely for cutting, don’t despair!

It’s easy enough to work plants like marigolds, dianthus or lavender into your existing beds, or even the vegetable garden.

When harvesting flowers for arrangements, I like to follow the golden rule of container planting and choose elements that will thrill, fill and spill.

That means I might select something tall and dramatic like spikes of foxgloves or snapdragons to thrill, flowers with a full, round head like hydrangeas or dahlias to fill, and something with a wispy or trailing growth habit to spill.

This can even be foliage or branches or a type of grass – nothing is off limits when it comes to backyard foraging! I bring a bucket of water or a vase outside with me and snip away. In addition to the flowers mentioned above, some of my go-to choices for bouquets include zinnias, sweet peas, cleome, gomphrena, stock, cosmos, coxcomb, celosia, calendula, gladiolus, shasta daisy, coralbells, purple coneflower, garden phlox, chrysanthemum, astilbe, coreopsis, yarrow, lilies and bearded iris.

Jail is just punishment for DUI

Dear Abby: I am normally a law-abiding citizen. I was pulled over a half-block away from picking up my son and charged with DUI. I don’t dispute the facts, but I didn’t injure anyone. I had taken prescription meds (the meds did have warnings) in addition to having drunk three beers two hours earlier. I hurt myself and my son, because he needed me to pick him up. I didn’t put anyone else in jeopardy. No one was physically hurt.

I did not contest that I should lose my license for a year, but I do contest jail time. I feel if they are going to put me in jail, they should have put away the men who rear-ended my sister and niece and caused them lasting injuries.

I don’t deny my guilt. I suggest only that I am less guilty than others. Abby, what do you think?

Brain implant can reverse effects of hydrocephalus Dear Doctor K: My father had been showing signs of dementia for a few months. We thought it was Alzheimer’s disease, but it turned out to be hydrocephalus. What is this, and how is it treated? Does the condition cause permanent brain damage?

Dear Reader: Hydrocephalus is a condition in which extra cerebrospinal fluid collects inside the brain. (Another name for it is “water on the brain.”) Cerebrospinal fluid acts as a cushion for the brain and spinal cord. It also supplies nutrients and removes waste products. (I’ve put an illustration of a brain affected by hydrodcephalus on my website, AskDoctorK. com.)

Cerebrospinal fluid flows in a space between the outer layer of the brain and the skull. It also is found in small “lakes” inside the brain called ventricles, and in a space around the spinal cord. It is the fluid surrounding the spinal cord from which doctors take a sample when they perform a “spinal tap.” The fluid is made in the brain. At about the same rate as it is made, some of the fluid leaves the brain and enters the blood to travel elsewhere in the body.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff remains mostly constant during adult life. In people with hydrocephalus, the ventricles (and the amount of fluid in them) expands.

Your father most likely experienced a type of hydrocephalus known as normal-pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). NPH occurs in a small number of older adults. It can result from head trauma, bleeding in the brain or inflammation of the membrane covering the brain. In about half of cases, doctors never identify what caused it. Something goes wrong with the system that moves fluid out of the brain and into the blood.

People with NPH can develop dementia; they may also lose bladder control. They walk with difficulty: short steps, feet placed wide apart and toes pointing outward for balance. Because of the problems with walking and balance, people with NPH tend to fall. Therefore, they are at increased risk for fracturing their hips and other bones.

To make a diagnosis, a doctor

will use computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to look for enlarged ventricles in the brain.

Next, the doctor will remove a large amount of this fluid with a spinal tap. If NPH is causing the problems, removing the fluid will lead to a temporary, but dramatic, improvement in symptoms.

To treat the condition permanently, a surgeon will implant a tube (called a shunt) that continuously drains excess fluid from the brain. The shunt is inserted into a ventricle through a hole in the skull. It is tunneled under the skin and carries the fluid into another area of the body, where it can be absorbed.

It is possible to largely reverse the effects of NPH, particularly if the problem is diagnosed and treated early. If your father’s CT or MRI scan shows little or no loss of brain tissue, or of impaired blood flow in the brain, those are encouraging signs. Hopefully, he will have a good response to the treatment.

Boyfriend is not Robin Hood Dr. Wallace: My boyfriend gave me an expensive pair of sunglasses for my birthday.

My good friend told me he stole the sunglasses from a department store. When I asked my boyfriend about this, he admitted he swiped them, explaining he didn’t have the money to pay for them but knew I really wanted them.

Now what do I do with them? Should I keep them, throw them away or give them back to my boyfriend?

My girlfriend thinks I should keep them. She thinks it’s sweet that he stole them just for me.

This week, we have been making an effort to study responder’s redouble after the opener has bid one of a suit and the next player has made a takeout double. This redouble promises at least 10 high-card points. On the second round, if the opener bids immediately, he announces a minimum or subminimum distributional opening bid – as in today’s deal.

When South bid two hearts, he described his hand well. (With a stronger hand, he would have passed first, then bid on the next round.)

North, with a super double fit, jumped to five hearts to say that he wanted to be in a slam, but that he had (at least) two immediate diamond losers.
