INTERSTATE 90/ROUTE 23 PROJECT ON COUNTY’S TO-DO LIST

Claims attorneys ‘botched’ his case, asks for new trial By CHELSEA McDOUGALL cmcdougall@shawmedia.com

Route 23 overpass in 2017 as part of its I-90 widening plan, the city, county and state have been working together to see whether the full interchange can be built, as well. Marengo’s vision for the interchange is not a retail or residential corridor – “not another Randall Road” as City Administrator Gary Boden put it – but an industrial center that’s 45 minutes away down from O’Hare and Rockford airports, and close to numerous major rail hubs.

WOODSTOCK – In court documents filed without the assistance of his attorneys, Scott B. Peters alleges he was abused in jail, his attorneys “botched” his case and he was the victim of an unfair prosecution. Peters, 52, formerly of Holiday Hills, was convicted in April on charges he attempted to murder M c H e n r y Scott County sher- B. Peters iff’s deputies Dwight Maness, Khalia Satkiewicz and Eric Luna. Maness is confined to a wheelchair, and Satkiewicz is recovering from her injuries from the shooting. Luna was uninjured. Among the latest allegations raised by Peters, he said his attorneys “botched” his case. Peters repeatedly has asked for new attorneys as his case was pending. McHenry County Judge Sharon Prather has told Peters, who is indigent, he can’t pick and choose the court-appointed lawyers who represent him. “The Court erred in allowing the McHenry County Public Defenders office to represent Him,” Peters’ pro se motion for a new trial reads.

A view of Interstate 90 from Route 23 is seen Tuesday in Marengo. The Illinois Department of Transportation has been making the rounds as part of its prep work for a report to the governor. The I-90/Route 23 interchange is high on the list of projects.

By KEVIN P. CRAVER kcraver@shawmedia.com MARENGO – An interchange at Interstate 90 and Route 23 officially has been added to the county’s transportation project to-do list. While the addition was symbolic in a way, given that the McHenry County Board last month paid more than $289,000 in motor-fuel tax toward startup design costs, its inclusion on the county’s latest Five-Year Transportation Program marks it as a top priority for county leaders who

long have sought having a full interchange with I-90 within the county’s borders. The project, pegged in the plan at $50.2 million, was added to the overall plan, which is annually updated by the McHenry County Division of Transportation and which board members approved earlier Gary Boden this week on a 16-6 vote. Because the Illinois Toll Highway Authority plans to replace the

Woman says her brother was sexually abused by Hastert The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – A Montana woman says her brother was sexually abused by former House Speaker Dennis Hastert during the years when the GOP leader was a wrestling coach at a Yorkville high school. Jolene Burdge of Billings, Montana, told The Associated Press on Thursday that the FBI interviewed her last month about Hastert, who

was charged last week in a federal indictment alleging that he agreed in 2010 to pay $3.5 million to someone so that person would stay quiet about “prior misconduct.” She said her brother told her before he died in 1995 that his first homosexual contact was with Hastert and that it lasted throughout his high school years. “He damaged Steve, I think, more than any of us will ever know,” she told the morning show. The AP could not independently verify her allegations. A friend and former classmate of Reinboldt’s said Reinboldt told him in 1974, during college, that he’d had a sexual relationship with Hastert in high school. That friend spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity so as not to be-

tray a personal confidence. A person familiar with the allegations in the indictment has told the AP that the payments mentioned in the document were intended to conceal claims that the Illinois Republican sexually molested someone decades ago. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing. Hastert has not been charged with sexual abuse. But Burdge’s story indicates

there could be more victims beyond the “Individual A” named in the indictment. The former congressman has not appeared in public or addressed any of the allegations since he was indicted. He did not respond to a message left on his cellphone Friday. Emails and phone messages sent to his son, Ethan Hastert, also went unanswered.
