Season ready for launch After cold winter, some prepare for a summer of boating By JEFF ENGELHARDT jengelhardt@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – It’s full sail ahead for boating season. After a long winter and even more snow Friday, those in the boating industry said they expect a wave of people to hit the water this year. Boating has become increasingly popular as registered vessels have increased nationally from 8.5 million in 1980 to 12.1 million in 2011. Illinois has more than 370,000 registered boats. “We’re only an hour away from Lake Michigan,” said Bob Remsing, owner of SailTime Chicago in Crystal Lake. “I can go out there and spend all day on the water. More people are finding it to be a
relaxing experience.” One of the biggest hurdles to boating has always been the cost, Remsing said, which is why he opened his business dedicated to lowering the cost for those who may be interested in trying sailing and power boating but could not afford it. His business, which opened in Crystal Lake in 2005, allows people to purchase packages for fractional use of a boat in the fleet, whether it be for three times a month or more than a dozen times a month. “The class of boats we have start at $170,000,” Remsing said. “It’s expensive to own a boat and maintain it and store it. When people see that cost and realize they can only use

WOODSTOCK – A young man who adapted to language and cultural barriers as a boy in Woodstock has been recognized for his efforts to make it easier on others making similar transitions. Rafael Castaneda, 22, was one of three honorees to receive the Matthew Freeman Social Justice award from Roosevelt University this spring, sharing honorable mention with another student. Castenada graduated from the school earlier this month. “It’s a big honor,” Rafael Castaneda said. “Just to Castaneda, know that your work is received the being acknowledged by Matthew someone somewhere. Many times, you keep Freeman doing this, you keep Social Justice speaking up, but with award everything going on you might not see a change automatically.” Castaneda received the award for his efforts to get a multicultural center put on campus, and for strengthening the school’s Latino studies and Spanish programs. The multicultural center, Castaneda said, would provide a central location for groups of varying ethnic backgrounds to gather, whether to hold specific events or to spend time together between classes. He said the center would help with the school’s retention and recruitment rate of international students. Students are currently scouting campus locations for the center and hope to get it going in the 2014-15 school

Tax-break expansion plan raises concerns, shrugs in community Push for small companies to have access to same tax breaks as bigger corporations CHAMPAIGN – Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan is pushing to give small companies equal access to tax breaks that big corporations have, but the proposal has been met
with skepticism in the state’s business community, including about what effect it actually would have. The plan takes aim at special EDGE credits – tax breaks a small number of big companies like Sears Holding Corp. and OfficeMax have sought by going directly to the Gen-

eral Assembly with threats to leave the state. EDGE credits are the state’s primary means of luring or keeping companies and jobs, but they’re usually administered by the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and include performance standards. Companies that have gone
straight to the General Assembly want to cut their own deals with perks not available to other companies. Madigan’s plan would make the tax credits available to businesses with fewer than 100 employees, and

Maura Beattie will be defending her Class 2A 3,200-meters state championship this weekend in the IHSA girls track and field state meet, but she has her eyes on another event, the 4x800 relay.
