ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A group of American Indian actors walking off the set of an Adam Sandler movie has sparked a debate over why Native American stereotypes in media have endured. It also shows that more Native Americans are voicing their opinions. This week, eight actors quit the production of the satirical Western “The Ridiculous Six” over complaints about offensive names and religious scenes. Writer Megan Red Shirt-Shaw said the move generated praise on social media from American Indian advocates because Hollywood continues to embrace outdated stereotypes.

Photographer settles suit against Bieber over altercation outside studio MIAMI – Pop star Justin Bieber has reached a settlement with a photographer who claimed he was assaulted by the singer’s bodyguard outside a South Florida recording studio. Attorney Mark DiCowden confirmed the settlement Friday between his client, photographer Jeffrey Binion, and Bieber. DiCowden said terms of the agreement are confidential. Binion filed the lawsuit in 2013 seeking unspecified damages. The photographer said he was roughed up while shooting pictures from a sidewalk outside the studio. The 21-year-old Bieber has had several run-ins with celebrity photographers, known as “paparazzi.” AP photo

Jolie rips world powers on Syria’s refugee crisis UNITED NATIONS – Actress Angelina Jolie pleaded with world powers Friday to help the millions of Syrian refugees, sharply criticizing the U.N. Security Council for being paralyzed by its division over Syria’s four-year conflict. Jolie briefed the council as special envoy for the U.N. on refugee issues. Syria’s ambassador said simply of her presence, “She’s beautiful.” Jolie spoke as the council prepared to hear the details of a new plan for peace talks set to begin early next month in Geneva, with Syria ally Iran among those invited. Nearly 4 million Syrians have fled the conflict into neighboring countries, which warn they are dangerously overstretched. “We cannot look at Syria, and the evil that has arisen from the ashes of indecision, and think this is not the lowest point in the world’s inability to protect and defend the innocent,” Jolie said. Jolie, who said she has made 11 visits to Syrian refugees in the region since the crisis began in 2011, called strongly for the political will to act. She said the council’s powers lie unused because its members cannot agree on how to address the conflict. Russia, a top Syria ally and backed by China, has vetoed multiple council resolutions on Syria, including an effort last year to refer the situation there to the International Criminal Court.

NEW YORK – Using her own family and Robin Williams as an example, a tearful Glenn Close urged some of the most powerful women in entertainment to help society shed its fear of those fighting mental illness in an emotional speech Friday at Variety’s Power of Women luncheon. Close was among the honorees, who also included Kim Kardashian and Whoopi Goldberg. Close’s speech was a tear-jerker for many in the crowd. She started off with a joke: “As an actress, I’ve terrified men, and I’ve certainly terrified children, but I have yet to terrify women. Contrary to the cliche, there’s little that frightens us.” But she went on to talk about how the specter of mental illness scares her most, and the need for greater awareness. Her sister has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, her nephew has schizo-affective disorder, and she recalled that her mother, who died two months ago, struggled with depression.

NEW YORK – Sawyer Sweeten, who played one of Ray Romano’s twin sons in the CBS comedy “Everybody Loves Raymond,” has died. He was 19. Sweeten killed himself, his sister Madylin Sweeten, said in a statement. There were no other details. Madylin, and Sawyer’s twin brother Sullivan, all played the children in the sitcom’s fictional Barone family. The hit comedy aired for nine seasons before ending in 2005. Sawyer Sweeten was a toddler when the series began. In a statement Madylin, who is four years older than Sawyer, said the family was requesting privacy. “We beg of you to reach out to the ones that you love,” she said. “Let them have no doubt of what they mean to you.”
Seriously silly, Monty Python reunites for a weekend tribute NEW YORK – Today they reign as elder statesman of cerebral silliness, these alumni of the Monty Python comedy troupe and, some would argue, the funniest men who ever lived. This weekend, the surviving Pythons – John Cleese and fellow Brits Eric Idle, Michael Palin and Terry Jones, plus Yankee interloper Terry Gilliam (the sixth member, Graham Chapman, died in 1989) – reunited in New York for the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival, with a 40th anniversary screening of their masterpiece, “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” and other Pythonalia.
