Election time means Election Central Four weeks from Tuesday is Election Day. That’s right, it’s primary season.

In McHenry County, that means we vote on who wins a lot of the offices up for election now in Republican primaries instead of in November because there’s no proof any actual Democrats live in McHenry County. At least not any willing to run for office.

There are some intriguing Republican primaries, however.

Contested GOP primaries in McHenry County include: County Board chairman, state’s attorney, recorder, all six County Board districts, circuit judge, state House Districts 63 and 66 and state Senate District 26.

There are five Congressional primaries and, of course, the U.S. president primaries.

Judging for the annual Westminster Kennel Club dog show begins Monday morning. In its 140th year, the event will feature seven new types of dogs, which boosts the total to 199 breeds and varieties. RYSTAL LAKE – Like most of his other schoolwork, 17-yearold Cody Brock prepared for the ACT on his own.

Home-schooled since seventh grade, Cody didn’t do much more than take a few practice exams on which he consistently scored in the 34 to

35 range, he said at his Crystal Lake home, surrounded by books, a calculator and a notebook. So when he received a perfect composite score of 36 on the real thing, it came as a pleasant surprise.

“I was expecting a 34 or 35,” Cody said. “So when I saw, I was pretty excited. That was a big thing for me.”

Obtaining the elusive perfect ACT score puts Cody into a minute group of student test-takers, Senior Director of Media and Public Relations for ACT Ed Colby said.

“Less than one-tenth of 1 percent of students who take the ACT earn a 36 composite score,” Colby said in an email. “That is very consistent from year to year.”

According to the most recent data from ACT, only about 1,400 students achieve this score of the 1.8 million students who take the exam each year.

“I was expecting a 34 or 35.

So when I saw [36], I was pretty excited. That was a big thing for me.”

Loprino said in a chamber newsletter that Gulli would be formally introduced and share her goals for the chamber at the annual chamber dinner at 6 p.m. Feb. 25 at The Public House of Woodstock, 101 N. Johnson St. “We’re incredibly happy to have Danielle in the role, and I think we’re

really looking forward to the chamber dinner on the 25th,” Potter said.

Potter said the chamber has moved into its new location at Woodstock City Hall.

Recently, the city of Woodstock approved a $25,000 loan for the chamber to help it repay debt services, launch new programs and hire a part-time executive director, Loprino said in a letter to the city.

Zoning board recommends denying request Meyer’s mining extension vote expected March 15

cswieca@shawmedia.com CARY – A request from Meyer Material Co. to extend mining and restoration operations at its site on Route 31 until 2020 received a negative recommendation from the Board of Zoning, Planning and Appeals.

The decision came more than three hours into the meeting last week, which included about an hour of public comment.

More than a dozen people spoke, all of whom opposed Meyer getting the extension.

Residents’ concerns included the amount of dust and noise the mining site puts into the nearby neighborhood and the potential effect on home values and sales.

Many said they had previously been fine with the operations because they were counting on them ending this year and ex-

pressed irritation that Meyer had not assessed the site accurately in the first place.

The negative recommendation means the amendment will need a supermajority vote of four of six trustees to pass through the Village Board. That body is tentatively scheduled to vote on the extension March 15. Attorney Tom Zanck and Meyer Material Director of Land and Environment Randi Wille presented Meyer’s case for an extension, saying the economic downturn had slowed progress and had not been accounted for in the original agreement.

They also said the soil overburden on part of the mining property was much thicker than anticipated, complicating the late stages of mining. Because of unforeseen issues with the land, they said, the resulting lake will be 4 to 5 acres smaller than originally planned. Patrick Jasper voted in favor of the extension after he added an amendment that Meyer still would need to pay the originally agreed upon $100,000-a-month penalty for any mining done after June 1 of this year.

one thought about the collapse of the economy,” Jasper said. “I put that in there for the very reason we’re talking tonight, and I think you owe that.”

Board members James Graziano, Jennifer Meyer, Holly Kelps and President Joseph Tournier voted against the extension.

Patrick Khoury and Frank O’Laughlin were absent.

Although Meyer Material presented a study from Tracy Cross & Associates that concluded the mine had not had a negative effect on property value of nearby homes, many residents of the Fox Trails subdivision disputed that with anecdotal evidence.

Jasper said he would like to see the study redone to include an analysis of foreclosures and short sales before the Village Board votes on it.

He also said he would like to see Meyer more aggressively market the land it owns along Route 31, which has already been mined and restored, to developers.

The current agreement allows Meyer to continue mining until June 1, with restoration to be completed by June 1, 2018.

CARY – The holidays may have ended, but for Ken Hauser, planning for Christmas is a year-round responsibility.

Hauser, a Cary resident and Vietnam veteran, is the chairman of Operation Christmas Cheer, which he operates out of VFW Post 4600 in McHenry.

Hauser is entering his 25th year in charge of the program for the VFW’s Fifth District, and he spends the whole year gathering donations and items to use for gift boxes for veterans hospitalized at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago.

Hauser also is a chaplain for the VFW 5th District and the Illinois Marine Corps League. He sat down with Northwest Herald reporter Caitlin Swieca to discuss his work with veterans.

Swieca: Tell me about your work with Operation Christmas Cheer.

Hauser: This will become the 49th

year of this program. This will be my 25th year I’m doing Operation Christmas Cheer, so I’d like to do something special. It’s for all our hospitalized veterans.

It’s an ongoing thing throughout the year with me collecting items from different companies, locations, people.

We had over 100 people volunteering, helping us put these boxes together.

We get about 65 items in there that go to every veteran up at North Chicago, and there are some left over that I give to other veterans outside the hospital. We toured the hospital on Dec. 13, and we ended up seeing about 325 patients up there.

The cadets from Waukegan, there’s about 40 of them that come every year to help not only fill the boxes, but on the day we distribute the boxes, they’re Santa’s helpers. Without the Waukegan ROTC cadets, we couldn’t do this anymore.

It’s a challenge. Every year you try to notch it up one notch. I think every year it’s been wonderful.

Swieca: How did you first get involved with the project?

Hauser: I’ve been the 5th District

chaplain for way over 25 years now. I met with this one gentleman who was doing Operation Christmas Cheer, Don Librande, who started it. It was a USO-style show. I was very impressed.

My company, H Media, did video productions, so it was right up my alley to videotape it. He thought it was a great idea.

He died, and I stepped forward. I think the Lord led me. I stepped forward to try to continue what good he had started.

For the last 15 years we’ve been doing this format. We used to really race through the wards, “Christmas, blah blah blah.”

This year, we spent quality time with each time of our veterans. We sing Christmas carols; we give goody boxes. They’ll sing back to us, we sing to them. We sing from “Jingle Bells” to “Away in a Manger,” “Silent Night,” “Frosty the Snowman.”

This is really my Christmas present, helping the veterans in the hospital. Our God sent his son down, and this is our way of saying thank you, by spreading his word.

Swieca: You were in Vietnam, which was obviously a life-changing experience for those who went. How has staying involved with the VFW and other veterans’ groups helped you since then?

Hauser: I was in Vietnam in 1967. I

ended up becoming a senior helicopter mechanic.

At that time I was a soldier. I was in the Army. That’s why I have post-traumatic stress. The first month, month and a half was horrible. I went from hell to heaven. I still get emotional.

Actually, I see two psychologists.

One is with a group, and what a wonderful group of guys. We’re all Vietnam vets. We do share not only what went on, but with our families and everything.

It’s every other week we meet, and it’s been very, very helpful.

Swieca: How did you end up getting involved with the Marine Corps League?

Hauser: Sixteen or 17 years ago, I get

a call from a general from the Marine Corps from the Pentagon. He said, “I’m calling because we’re starting a new detachment in Gurnee, and we’re looking for a chaplain, and we’d like to know if you’d consider it.”

The first thing I said was, “Sir, you realize I was [an Army] soldier.” He said, “We know that. I have in front of me your records. You’re a certified chaplain, you’re a combat vet, you’re honorably discharged, but most importantly, your dad was a Marine, so you’ve got Marine blood in you. Would you consider it?”

Cody’s mom, Michele Brock, said she didn’t realize how significant her son’s score was until learning of the rarity of it.

“When we got the score we were like, Jacob ‘Yeah, that’s good,’ ” she Anderson laughed. “But then we got the statistics from the ACT and I was like, ‘Oh, so that was really good.’ ” Still, it wasn’t a complete surprise considering her son’s work ethic and relentless love of learning.

She described his diligence in working on his online coursework independently every day – he’s gotten to a level above where Michele feels comfortable teaching him, she said.

She also described his love of books.

In between playing chess, practicing archery and playing paintball with friends, Cody’s nose is typically in a book, whether it be one of fantasy science fiction or a nonfiction physics book.

LOCAL BRIEFS Freezing rain could cause icy roads for Monday commute

Freezing rain could make roads icy and dangerous for the Monday morning commute, the National Weather Service warned Sunday. A special weather statement issued for McHenry County on Sunday night said lingering flurries could mix with or change to freezing drizzle overnight and into Monday morning.

Untreated roads and walking surfaces could become hazardous if the freezing rain does develop, the statement said.

The warning comes after a round of snow Sunday that caused accumulations of about 2 inches around the Chicago area, according to the National Weather Service. The snow caused several minor vehicle crashes around McHenry County.

Monday’s forecast predicts snow showers in the early morning hours and temperatures climbing into the 30s by mid-afternoon. High temperatures are expected to stay near freezing for most of the week before climbing to expected highs in the mid-50s Friday.

Two taken to hospital after SUVs crash on Three Oaks Road in CL CRYSTAL LAKE – One man and one

woman were taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital on Sunday afternoon after a crash on Three Oaks Road, a fire official said.

Crystal Lake Fire Rescue District Battalion Chief Tom Pollnow said the two were driving SUVs in opposite directions when they crashed near Three Oaks Road and Lutter Drive.

Because of the snow on the road, one of the vehicles spun around and went off the road and onto a curb.

The SUVs sustained moderate damage, Pollnow said, and no one else was in the vehicles at the time. Crystal Lake police also responded to the scene.

Lakemoor issues 12 tickets during Super Bowl crackdown

LAKEMOOR – A total of 12 traffic citations were issued during eight hours of grand-funded detail time during the village’s driving crackdown on Super Bowl Sunday.

Among the citations were tickets for transportation of open alcohol and minors in possession of alcohol.

The effort was part of a nationwide campaign in partnership with the Illinois

Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police and law enforcement across Illinois.

Centegra adds speaker to Health Strong Woman Event

CRYSTAL LAKE – Centegra Health System announced Saturday that Dr. Elizabeth Retzer has been added as a speaker at its Health Strong Woman Event, which will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Holiday Inn in Crystal Lake, 800 S. Route 31.

Retzer, an interventional cardiologist, will deliver a speech titled “Mend Your Broken Heart: Getting to the Root of Chest Pain.” She will speak before keynote speaker Barbara Hannah Grufferman.

Retzer received a medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and completed an internship, residency and fellowship with the University of Chicago Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 3, 1931, in Schiller Park to Joseph W. and Mary (Skobel) Stetkus Sr. Joseph served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked as a coffee roaster at Superior Tea and Coffee until retirement.

Joseph was a member of the Moose Lodge in Harvard and the V.F.W. He will be remembered as kindhearted, strong willed, and a sports fan.

Survivors include his children, Michael (Christine) Stetkus Sr., Arlene Wlodarek, Kathy Imboden; grandchildren, Michael Jr., and Melissa Stetkus, Jessica and April Imboden and Matthew Wlodarek; stepdaughter, Debra Giles; siblings, Elaine (Vic) Iwanski, Edward (Sonia) Stetkus and Kenny

‘Will you be mine’ stands test of time LOCAL HISTORY Kurt Begalka Shel Trost never thought she’d be sweet on Valentine’s Day, but then the McHenry resident received one of the “more plain red” heart-shaped candy boxes from her husband and daughter about 20 years ago.

It didn’t take long for Trost, who never had received a candy heart box before, to be smitten. Soon after, she found an older box from the 1950s in a Wisconsin Dells’ antique shop and the rest – as they say – is history. She revels in all of the textures, colors and creativity.

“It’s everything about them,” Trost said of her collection, which now numbers between 70 and 80. “I’m not a frilly person, but I can do this without wearing it.”

Many of the finest examples from her collection will be on display at the McHenry County Historical Society & Museum in Union. They are part of the society’s annual “Members Only” exhibit on display during the 2016 season.

Members, even those joining the evening of March 18, will be able to get a sneak peek at Trost’s collection and those of seven other hobbyists from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. that Friday.

Other collections on display include Midgetoy die cast toys; pewter; vintage kitchen utensils; Woodstock library memorabilia; bar coasters; pattern glass; Mason jars; glass bottles; memorabilia from Immanuel Lutheran Church’s 145th anniversary in Crystal Lake and collectibles from the Chicago & North Western Railroad’s archives.

But, of course, Trost’s “kitchy” collection can’t help but tug at one’s heart.

“The oldest ones in the cabinet are from the late ’20s and early ’30s, and are worth between $85 and $165,” Trost said. “On eBay, I used to be able to buy three middle-of-the-road empty heart boxes for $10 with shipping. Now the lowest priced are $7 to $10 each – plus shipping.”

The rising cost and storage space prompted Trost to curtail her collecting five years ago, but if she had an opportunity to buy one of the early Cadbury hearts – the ones children used to cut the lids off and save in scrapbooks – she would have to give it serious consideration. John Cadbury’s tea and coffee shop in Birmingham, England, posted higher sales starting in 1861, when his son, Richard, began packaging the famous chocolates in heart-shaped boxes for Valentine’s Day. mementos, buttons or pictures. Bows, lace, cupids, satin, velvet and flowers have decked out chocolate boxes since, courtesy of companies that range from the well-known – including Brach’s, Fannie May and Russell Stover – to the obscure, such as Puritan Candy Corp. of Milwaukee or the Elmer Candy Corp. of Ponchatoula, Louisiana.

It all is part of the cachet that is Valentine’s Day. An estimated 131 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged each year – second only to Christmas for the greeting card industry. Hallmark first offered Valentine’s Day cards in 1913 and began producing them three years later.

Massachusetts, is thought to be the first mass producer of Valentine cards in this country, starting in the 1840s.

Valentines were around even earlier, cut by hand from folded paper with pen knives and decorated with pin pricks and paint long before Howland added die-cut flowers and gilt paper trim.

Nancy Rosin, president of the 40-year-old National Valentine Collectors Association in New Jersey, said Valentine’s Day ephemera has a magical quality that connects generations.

“Hopefully people don’t want the instant gratification of an email valentine,” Rosin said. “There is nothing to cherish, nothing tangible. I know people who have inherited valentines

from their grandmother or mother. I try to convince them of their sentimental value.”

Besides the aesthetic value, Valentine’s Day memorabilia often contained many unspoken messages, conveyed in the “language of flowers.” There also was an undeniable social aspect, allowing a woman in pre-suffrage times to express her love overtly … and for a man to do so covertly.

“In the old days, a sailor would carve a bust made of whale bone that a women would insert in her corset,” Rosen said. “That way she would remember him always because it probably was very uncomfortable!”

Historic Valentine’s Day gifts are a time capsule of the “most personal and intimate communication between people,” Rosen said – punctuated with locks of hair or pieces of familiar fabric.

“I like the handmade things made before the manufactured era, the affectionate handmade things such as Civil War valentines from a soldier wanting to come home. … It’s a recording of everything going on in our lives.”

And, this is the best part: The friendship and affection these baubles and bows convey is timeless.

“I think love is here to stay,” Rosin said. “Love is that intangible; the emotion that inspired everything from great art and poetry to wars. It’s such an important thing. We need to honor it.”

Obama reignites political maps debate

By SARA BURNETT CHICAGO – At first blush, it may have seemed like a rare moment of bipartisanship at the Illinois Capitol: Democratic President Barack Obama called for changes to a process for drawing political maps that too often favors one party, bringing Republican lawmakers to their feet.

“In America, politicians should not pick their voters; voters should pick their politicians,” Obama said during last week’s speech in Springfield, echoing comments from his final State of the Union address.

But Illinois’ redistricting process is shaping up to be one of the biggest battles of 2016, as a bipartisan group of supporters and Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner push to put a measure on the November ballot and opponents, including some top Democrats, argue it would “devastate the voices of minority communities.”

Here’s a closer look at the issue:

New Ill. law means fewer emergency dispatch centers

BELLEVILLE – A new Illinois law aimed at consolidating local government services will significantly reduce the number of separate emergency dispatch centers in parts of Illinois.

The Belleville News-Democrat reported the law requires counties with at least 250,000 residents to cut by half the number of 911 call centers by July 2017.

There are eight such “public safety answering points” in St. Clair County and 16 in neighboring Madison County.

A new group known as Independent Maps announced last year it would try again, saying it learned from the previous legal battle and is confident that its latest proposal will withstand a court challenge. The group has gathered about 500,000 of the roughly 600,000 petition signatures it hopes to collect by the end of April to get the measure on the ballot.

Harvey man charged in toddler’s scalding

CHICAGO – A suburban Chicago man has been charged with aggravated battery to a child after the 1-year-old son of his live-in girlfriend suffered severe burns from scalding hot bath water.

Michael Barber of Harvey was jailed Saturday in Cook County. Bail was set at $2 million for Barber, who is in his mid-20s.

Prosecutors said the child remains hospitalized awaiting skin graft surgery for second- and third-degree burns to his feet, buttocks and genitals after the

Rather than let the majority party control the process, the Independent Map Amendment would create an 11-member commission made up of members representing different geographic areas and demographic groups.

It would require seven commissioners – including at least two Republicans and two Democrats – to approve a map.

The commission members would be selected by a review panel chosen randomly from a pool of registered voters who adhere to “standards of ethical conduct.”

Opponents

Some Democrats and minority voters – including several who were part of the 2014 lawsuit – still are expressing concern, however.

They’ve formed a group known as People’s Map to oppose the initiative.

According to documents filed with the Illinois State Board of Elections, Madigan’s lawyer Michael Kasper also is representing the group.

Chicago resurrects idea of express train to O’Hare

CHICAGO – Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s administration is resurrecting the idea of an express train to whisk business travelers and tourists between downtown Chicago and O’Hare International Airport.

The city said an engineering firm will spend the next 10 months evaluating potential routes, drafting designs and coming up with a construction timeline and cost estimate.

If the plan moves ahead, Aviation Commissioner Ginger Evans told the Chicago Tribune the city would look for a private

Hooker said that under the proposal, there’s no way to ensure minorities will be represented on the commission. He also said there’s no guarantee minority communities would be “protected” – essentially kept together in the same district in numbers large enough to influence a vote. That would lead to less minority representation in the Legislature, Hooker said.

Independent Maps spokesman Jim Bray denied Hooker’s claims. He said the proposed amendment requires diversity on the commission and states that legislative districts “shall not dilute or diminish the ability of a racial or language minority community to elect the candidates of its choice.”

Bray also said Obama’s push for change “deflates” opponents’ arguments.

“I don’t think President Obama would be out advocating these kinds of redistricting reforms if they reduced minority representation,” he said.

Scalia’s death means loss of key vote in divided cases

WASHINGTON – Justice Antonin Scalia’s death deprives conservatives of a key vote that could change the outcome in some major Supreme Court cases, including one in which labor unions appeared headed for a big defeat.

Next month’s Supreme Court arguments in a clash over contraceptives, religious liberty and President Barack Obama’s health care law also now seem more likely to favor the Obama administration.

Those are the most immediate effects on the court after the loss of its conservative icon and longest-serving justice.

It’s a firm Supreme Court rule that decisions are not final until they are handed down. So nothing Scalia did or said in pending cases matters to the outcome.

“The vote of a deceased justice does not count,” veteran Supreme Court lawyer Roy Englert said Sunday, a day after Scalia was found dead in his room at a west Texas ranch.

Subtracting Scalia’s vote from cases in which he was in the majority in a 5-4 split leaves the result tied, four a side.

The remaining eight justices have two options in that situation: They can vote to hear the case a second time when a new colleague joins them, or they can hand down a one-sentence opinion that upholds the result reached in the lower court without setting a nationwide rule.

A second round of arguments seems less likely at the moment because a new justice may not be confirmed until the next president is in office.

A tie vote, by contrast, resolves the case at hand and allows the legal issue to return to the court at a later date when there is a ninth justice.

Public sector labor unions had been bracing for a stinging defeat in a lawsuit over whether they can collect fees from government workers who choose not to join the union. The case affects more than 5 million workers in 23 states and Washington, D.C., and seeks to overturn a nearly 40-year-old Supreme Court decision.

Now, what seemed like a certain 5-4 split, with the conservatives in the majority and the liberals in dissent, instead looks like a tie that would be resolved in favor of the unions, because they won in the lower courts.

“That’s a big loss. It was all teed up and it looks like it’s not going to go anywhere now,” said Brian Fitzpatrick, a Vanderbilt University law professor who once served as a law clerk to Scalia.

The court heard arguments in December in a case from Texas on the meaning of the principle of “one person, one vote,” which the court has said requires that political districts be roughly equal in population.

But it has left open the question of whether states must count all residents, including noncitizens and children, or only eligible voters in drawing district lines.

The court’s upcoming look at the health care overhaul will be its fourth case involving the 2010 law. This time, the focus is on the arrangement the Obama administration worked out to spare faith-based hospitals, colleges and charities from paying for contraceptives for women covered under their health plans, while still ensuring that those women can obtain birth control at no extra cost as the law requires.

The faith-based groups argue that the accommodation still makes them complicit in providing contraception to which they have religious objections.

A tie vote here would sow rather than alleviate confusion because the appellate courts that have looked at the issue have not all come out the same way.

That prospect suggests that Justice Anthony Kennedy will join the court’s four liberal justices to uphold the arrangement, Supreme Court lawyer Thomas Goldstein said.

Other big cases before the justices this term include affirmative action, abortion and immigration.

Supreme Court vacancy tangible for ’16 candidates

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – The presidential election just got real.

The unexpected death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia – and the immediate declaration from Republicans that the next president should nominate his replacement – adds even more weight to the decision voters will make in November’s general election.

For months, the candidates have espoused Antonin theoretical, sometimes Scalia vague, policy proposals.

Now, the prospect of President Barack Obama’s successor nominating a Supreme Court justice immediately after taking office offers a more tangible way for voters to evaluate the contenders.

Candidates in both parties moved quickly to reframe the election as a referendum on the high court’s future.

“Two branches of government hang in the balance, not just the presidency, but the Supreme Court,” Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said in the latest GOP debate, held in South Carolina just hours after word filtered out Saturday about Scalia’s death in Texas. “If we get this wrong, if we nominate the wrong candidate, the Second Amendment, life, marriage, religious liberty, every one of those hangs in the balance.”

Democratic Hillary Clinton painted a similarly stark scenario.

“If any of us needed a reminder of just how important it is to take back the United States Senate and hold onto the White House, just look at the Supreme Court,” Clinton said.

Clinton has said she would have “a bunch of litmus tests” for potential nominees, including a belief that the Citizens United ruling clearing the way for super political action committees and unlimited campaign contributions should be overturned. She also said the court’s makeup is crucial to preserving abortion rights and the legality of gay marriage nationwide.

Bernie Sanders, who is challenging Clinton for the Democratic nomination, has raised opposition to Citizens United as a requirement for any Supreme Court nominees.

Scalia, a hero of conservatives

during his nearly 30 years on the Supreme Court, was found dead Saturday at a resort ranch in Texas. The court now is divided between four liberal and four typically conservative justices, putting the ideological tilt up for grabs.

Obama pledged to nominate a replacement in “due time,” even after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said that responsibility should fall to the winner of the 2016 election.

Obama could try to ram a nominee through the Senate this year, taking a high court vacancy Barack off the next president’s Obama immediate to-do list.

Even if that were to happen, a confirmation vote probably would be months away, leaving the Supreme Court in the center of the campaign during the nomination process.

With three other justices over the age of 75, the next president could have other vacancies during his or her tenure, even if Obama fills Scalia’s seat.

It’s unclear how the new focus on the Supreme Court might affect voters’ decisions in an election that has seen surprising and unconventional candidates such as Donald Trump and Sanders challenge their parties’ establishments.

Previous political thunderbolts that were supposed to push voters toward more traditional candidates, such as last fall’s terrorist attacks in Paris and California, passed without any negative impact on Trump and Sanders. In fact, Sanders has strengthened since then, with the economic-focused Vermont senator handily defeating Clinton in the New Hampshire primary and finishing a close second in the Iowa caucuses.

Trying to counter Sanders’ momentum, Clinton has urged voters to consider which candidate is most electable in November. With the balance of the Supreme Court now potentially on the line, Clinton and her allies are certain to increase their warnings about the risk of sending a self-declared democratic socialist to face a Republican in the fall.

“For any Democrat thinking about casting a protest vote for Sen. Sanders, this should serve as a wake-up call for what’s exactly at stake,” said Jim Manley, a former aide to top Democratic senators.

Northeast sees a record cold for Valentine’s Day

NEW YORK – For much of the northeast United States, Valentine’s Day was the coldest on record, with people bundling up for the not-sowarm embrace of teeth-chattering temperatures.

From New York and Boston to Providence, Rhode Island, and Hartford, Connecticut, temperatures on Sunday morning dipped to as low as minus 40 – on Mount Washington in New Hampshire.

The National Weather Service said the temperature in New York City’s Central Park fell to minus 1, a record low for the date. The last time it was below zero in Central Park was in January 1994.

“I’m dumb enough to do this,” exclaimed John Male before starting a 12-mile park run on Sunday morning with two companions.

“I just always come out and I just decided not to do anything differently” – except to wear a furry tiger hat with two tails over his normal headgear, in addition to four layers of clothing.

His running partner also was wearing a tiger hat on top of the balaclava that covered her face – except the eyes.

“It’s zero degrees and feels like negative 19; I’m going to sue him for personal injury after this,” joked Molly Manning, a Manhattan attorney. “I’m here because they peer-pressured me to come out today. They basically made me feel like I was a wimp unless I came out.”

Boston reached minus 9, breaking the record set in 1934 by 6 degrees. It reached minus 16 in Worcester, Massachusetts, breaking the 1979 record of 11 below zero. Providence hit minus 9 and Hartford minus 12, also breaking records from 1979.

In Montpelier, Vermont, the overnight temperature hit minus 19, tying a record set in 2003. And South Lincoln, Vermont, recorded 27 below zero.

Temperatures were so low in some spots, utilities were knocked out.

A frozen regulator left about 400 customers in Connecticut without natural gas service and officials believe extreme cold in Vermont broke a utility pole, knocking out service to about 1,500.

That’s the view of many experts as EU leaders prepare for a Brussels summit that starts Thursday. Analysts believe the combined strain of challenges including a refugee crisis, threats facing the euro currency and Britain’s plan to hold a referendum on whether to leave the EU may be unbearable for the 28-nation bloc.

Just 20 years ago, the EU seemed to be growing in stature as it proudly offered freedom and democracy – along with lucrative subsidies, military alliances and billions in foreign investment – to newly freed former Soviet satellites.

Now, NATO warships are steaming toward the Aegean Sea in an escalated bid to impose order on the chaotic arrival of more than 1 million migrants, which has not abated despite the wintry weather in southern Europe.

Informal mini-blocs have formed within the European Union, with some

countries banding together to challenge, or just ignore, the EU’s announced refugee resettlement program. Temporary border controls have been introduced in key countries including Germany and France, threatening the cherished notion of freedom of movement across European borders.

Britain, a nuclear power with a seat at the U.N. ECATEPEC, Mexico – Pope Francis condemned the drug trade’s “dealers of death” and urged Mexicans to shun the devil’s lust for money as he led a huge open-air Mass for more than 300,000 people Sunday in this violence-riddled city.

“Let us get it into our heads: With the devil, there is no dialogue,” the pope said at the biggest scheduled event of his five-day visit to Mexico.

Francis brought a message of encouragement on the second full day of his trip to residents of Ecatepec, a poverty-stricken Mexico City suburb of about 1.6 million people where drug violence, kidnappings and gangland-style killings, particularly of women, are a fact of life.

“He’s coming to Ecatepec because we need him here,” said Ignacia Godinez, a 56-year-old homemaker. “Kidnappings, robberies and drugs have all increased, and he is bringing comfort. His message will reach those who need it so that people know we, the good people, outnumber the bad.”

In a clear reference to the drug lords who hold sway in the city’s sprawling expanses of cinderblock slums, Francis focused his homily on the danger posed

The government assigned more than 10,000 police, soldiers and members of the presidential guard to protect the motorcade and Mass.

“I’m protected by my faith and the joy of seeing the pope up close,” said Graciela Elizalde, 35, who arrived at the field Saturday evening and spent the night on the street, “and the thugs know that we the good people have come out to take the streets.”

If the boys in Springfield continue to dither – and there’s no reason to believe they won’t – when this fiscal year ends we will have spent $10 billion to $12 billion more than we have, according to Illinois Comptroller Leslie Geissler Munger.

She said at present there is $100 million available and a bill backlog of $7 billion.

Munger notes that Illinois could tax its way out of the mess, but that would require boosting the state income tax rate from 3.75 percent of your income (remember when it was 2 percent B.B. – Before Blagojevich?) to somewhere between 7 and 8 percent.

“I don’t know (of) any legislators that would vote for that, and I don’t know many businesses that would stay in Illinois for that,” Munger said. “And so, as a result, we must look at some reforms – some that will help our business be more competitive so that they can absorb some increase in taxes and still put people back to work and bring jobs.”

The claxon keeps sounding, the fire bell keeps ringing, the siren keeps blaring, but no one in the statehouse seems to get that you can’t allow spending to rage without a budget to get it under control.

House Speaker Michael Madigan’s familiar response is to again blame Gov. Bruce Rauner – blah, blah, hurt middle class, blah, blah, gave a $4 billion deficit budget in May, blah, blah, blah.

“It is what it is,” Madigan’s spokesman said.

What it is, is a $6.2 billion-and-growing deficit.

Munger said that is more than enough money to buy both of this year’s Super Bowl teams, Chicago’s former Sears Tower and two round-trip tickets to the moon.

Maybe the solution is to just buy two one-way tickets to the moon: “Paging passengers Cullerton and Madigan.”

Redistricting amendment

To the Editor: I fully agree with the Northwest Herald Editorial Board’s position in its Jan. 24 editorial (“Keep up petition drive for accountability”) that every citizen should step forward and add their name to the petition to pass the Independent Map Amendment.

An 11-member independent commission should draw the electoral map, rather than have career politicians continue to select their own voters. The decrease in the number of contested elections over the past several years is appalling, along with the ever-increasing level of voter apathy. You can add your name to a copy of the petition at the Farm Bureau office at 1102 McConnell Road in Woodstock.

However, I feel the Editorial Board overlooked a key issue: the power of incumbency. Currently, elected officials have an incredible advantage (name recognition and a built-in campaign financing advantage). Our currently elected officials will continue to remain in power, and the level of corruption in the state of Illinois will remain high, unless the rules are fundamentally changed.

Not only do we need to pass the

Independent Map Amendment, but we also need to implement term limits for our elected officials at the state and federal levels. Only then will we be able to reverse the trend of the number of uncontested elections.

To the Editor: The only thing scarier than Donald Trump running for president is people actually voting for him.

While some of his words may possess merit at times, their meaning is quickly lost to his arrogant, egocentric and abusive behavior.

Can you imagine this man dealing with world affairs?

He can’t even debate among his own peers in a way that demonstrates class, intelligence and poise. He is totally unqualified to be president, and while he may be able to incite laughter with his ridiculous ramblings, no one will be laughing if, by some chance, he ends up as the leader of our country.

To the Editor: Any careful examination of the record clearly will show Joe Gottemoller is the most experienced and most qualified candidate for County Board chairman.

Joe Gottemoller has served as a member of the McHenry County Board since 2012 and as its chairman since December 2014. He also has served as chairman of the county Planning and Development Committee.

Joe has led the County Board in the effort to control and lower county taxes. He has a long-standing commitment to excellent service and efficient and cost-effective government.

It has been my pleasure to know Joe for many years. I trust his judgment because he relies on community dialogue, research and factual information. Joe has the highest level of integrity, and I know he will provide the public with the highest-quality services at the lowest possible cost.

I highly recommend a vote for Joe Gottemoller for County Board chairman.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Sometimes I think I learned more politically relevant lessons playing ball than anywhere else.

If nothing else, sports teach realism: what you can do, what you can’t, how to deal with it. Also, what’s the score, how much time’s left and what’s the best tactic right now?

It helps to know the rules, and it’s important to keep your head. Bad plays are inevitable, dumb plays less forgivable.

Here’s something else you learn playing ball: Not everybody on your team is going to be your friend, just as people wearing different-colored shirts aren’t personal enemies.

Also, spectators can be fickle. Your most passionate fans quickly can turn into your opponent’s ally.

These are all useful concepts during an American primary election.

An athlete in his youth, Bernie Sanders appears to understand overwrought fans.

His campaign’s apology to Hillary Clinton supporters harassed online by so-called “Bernie Bros,” angry young men given to coarse attacks upon anybody – especially women – supporting his rival was a class move.

“If you support @berniesanders,” Sanders aide Mike Casca tweeted from Iowa, “please follow the senator’s lead and be respectful when people disagree with you.”

Columnist Joan Walsh had called out the Bernie Bros’ behavior.

“When I’ve disclosed that my daughter works for Clinton – in The Nation, on MSNBC, and on social media – we’ve both come in for trolling so vile,” she wrote, “it’s made me not merely defensive of her. It’s forced me to recognize how little society respects the passion of the many young women – and men – who are putting their souls into electing the first female president.”

Walsh told BuzzFeed that, while she didn’t blame Sanders, “it is disturbing to see such a misogynist strain in the male left. It’s not a new thing, but it’s tough to experience.”

Kathleen Geier, a contributor to The Nation and a Sanders supporter, concedes the Bernie Bros are definitely “doing harm to the cause. I haven’t seen people treat Obama supporters like this, or supporters of other male establishment candidates – just Hillary.

So it’s definitely misogyny.”

Well, yes and no. See, I suspect many of these jokers are Internet trolls in the original sense: right-wing Hillary-haters seeking to foment discord among Democrats.

Anybody can pretend to be anything online. Anonymity encourages people to unmask their darkest impulses. Read the comments line to almost anything on the Internet about the Clinton-Sanders campaign.

Even in the relatively civilized precincts of The Guardian, commenters to a Jill Abramson column sympathetic to Clinton revel in nasty sexual insults:

VIEWS Gene Lyons “Yes, please tell me how Shillary is the nicest corporate oligarchical servant, and how she will lovingly sell out the people who voted for her to her banker masters, with a twinkle in her fellating eye.”

Another online philosopher opines that, “she can’t be good for a nation if she wasn’t good enough for her husband.”

A third adds that, “Hillary is a terrible campaigner and a much worse human being.

She is thoroughly corrupt, dishonest, vile, vindictive, vengeful, condescending, etc.”

As somebody who’s gotten obscene, often threatening emails WRITTEN IN ALL CAPS for years, I can’t say I’m shocked. Recently a tough guy in Illinois speculated that being named “Eugene” made me a sissy; Noreen says Hillary’s a COMMIE BITCH and that my photo makes her vomit.

All in a day’s work.

Anyway, maybe I’m looking in the wrong places, but I see no comparable venom about Bernie Sanders. My own strongest reservation is that despite his admirable qualities, I’ve seen few signs of political realism in his campaign.

As baseball people say, there’s no such thing as a six-run home run. How otherwise sensible Democrats have persuaded themselves that a candidate preaching “revolution” and promising big tax increases can win come November in swing states like Ohio, Michigan, and Florida – places that have trended Democratic, but have Republican governors – is hard for me to grasp.

(Unless, of course, the GOP nominates a far-right Froot Loop such as Ted Cruz – not a probability I’d want to gamble on.)

The Daily Banter’s Chez Pazienza sums up everything that needs to be said about “Bernie Bros,” make-believe and real: “If you’re a liberal who believes these things about Clinton – if you see her as anything other than a liberal Democrat who’s guilty of nothing more than being a politician with faults and with a plethora of enemies like every other on this planet, including Bernie Sanders – you’ve proven that the protracted smear campaign against this woman has worked. You prove that the GOP won a long time ago.”

Meanwhile, both candidates’ supporters would do well to recall that Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton have voted together in the U.S. Senate 93 percent of the time.

Depression after stroke treatable Dear Dr. K: My mother had a stroke that weakened one side of her body. But the bigger problem right now is her depression. Can that be treated, or is it caused by irreversible brain damage from the stroke?

Dear Reader: Strokes can cause significant problems. People can have difficulty moving (like your mother). They can have trouble speaking or understanding speech. They can have trouble thinking. Being suddenly hit with any or all of those losses would depress anyone – including people who never suffered from depression before.

About one in four people who’ve had a stroke develop major depression. In part, this is a reaction to the terrible losses caused by a stroke. But you’re right that the injury to the brain from the stroke can itself cause changes in brain chemistry that lead to depression.

In other words, depression after a stroke can be similar to depression following another major illness that affects a person’s life but does not injure the brain – such as a heart attack or cancer. But it also can be caused by the brain injury itself.

The mental anguish of depression isn’t a minor concern. Left untreated, depression can undermine efforts at rehabilitation and worsen cognitive disabilities.

Depression after a stroke is associated with poorer outcomes a year after the stroke has occurred. It’s also associated with a higher death rate in subsequent years.

Fortunately, antidepressants seem to be fairly effective. In 2008, scientists published a review of the research in this area. They concluded the medications had a “small but significant” effect on post-stroke depression.

What’s more, the benefits of antidepressants may not be limited to relieving depression; they may positively affect areas and

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff networks in the brain that improve other impaired functions as well. Studies have found certain antidepressants, in combination with physical therapy, can help with recovery from stroke-induced paralysis, muscle weakness and overall disability.

If you haven’t already done so, talk to your mother’s doctor about her depression. Ask the doctor to recommend a psychiatrist who has experience working with stroke patients, or find out if there is a mental health professional affiliated with your mother’s rehab program.

Treatment of stroke has improved greatly in this country. Some people who would have died or been severely disabled can now do quite well. That’s due, in part, to powerful drugs that can quickly open blocked blood vessels in the brain.

More recently, stents that grasp and remove the blood clots that are blocking blood flow to the brain have been found to be effective. They more than double the chance a patient with a stroke will become functionally independent.

Doctors who concentrate on deploying all of these new treatments available for patients with stroke can sometimes neglect to recognize and treat depression. If you think that might be happening with your mother, raise that issue with her doctor.

Parents jump to their feet and applaud as the band breaks into the school fight song. Students file into seats. Coaches scribble plays on a whiteboard.

Meanwhile, three referees stand silently along the sideline wearing freshly pressed pants and shiny black shoes. It’s often said the mark of a good referee is one you don’t notice, so it would be easy to get caught up in the pageantry of this Friday night basketball game and overlook what is unique about this refereeing crew.

But look closer. See the resemblance?

He got his drivers license and a job with the park district officiating youth basketball games. His younger brothers followed suit when they were still at Dundee High School and, before long, the brothers had worked their way up from officiating freshman basketball to sophomore basketball to junior varsity and finally varsity.

Scott and Steve each have officiated three times at the state basketball tournament – the maximum allowed by the IHSA – including in 2007 when they became the first set of brothers to ref the tournament together.

“That was the highlight of my career,” Scott said.

“I’m sure it was the highlight of my brothers’ as well.”

Playoff games are assigned on merit, and the Massies have officiated plenty of them. Ask around the Fox Valley Conference and you’ll see that the Massies earned respect from coaches.

“We went to the coaches’ meeting every year where we discussed officials,” said Jim Hinkle, who coached at Jacobs for half a century. “There were always officials that coaches hoped they’d never see again and others they really enjoyed seeing and were glad they worked their games. They always came in the latter category.”

Barry Burmeister, now the athletic director at McHenry, remembers that the Massie brothers gave him his first technical foul almost 30 years ago. Did he deserve it?

“Oh, I probably deserved it way before he gave it to me,” Burmeister laughed. “But after he gave it to me, he said, ‘Do you want another one?’ I said, ‘Well, I didn’t want the first one.’”

TORONTO – Kobe Bryant said his NBA All-Star Game goodbye and the next generation of the West’s best sent him off a winner, rolling to a record-setting 196-173 victory Sunday over the East.

The first All-Star Game outside the U.S. was the highest-scoring ever, with both teams scoring more than any team had ever managed. Bryant didn’t provide much of the offense but many of the memories.

He finished with just 10 points, so few that he lost his career lead in All-Star Game scoring to LeBron James, even though James also had a quiet night.

But Russell Westbrook scored 31 points in his second straight All-Star MVP performance, Stephen Curry added 26, Anthony Davis 24, and Kevin Durant 23.

Paul George finished with 41 for the East, tying Westbrook’s total from last year in New York that was one off Wilt Chamberlain’s record. John Wall added 22 points.

James finished with 13 points, just enough to move ahead of Bryant for most ever in the All-Star Game. He has 291, while Bryant, who is retiring after this season, leaves with 290.

He checked out with 1:06 left to cheers and hugs from his fellow All-Stars who now put up points in bunches the way Bryant did for so long.

A little less than three weeks ago, Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman said it was difficult to get a feel for who might be available at the Feb. 29 trade deadline because of how many teams were on the playoff bubble.

“The biggest thing is, you’re not quite sure what’s available around the league,” Bowman said.

“At this point, there’s a lot of clustering in the standings. And in order for trades to happen you have to have teams Stan Bowman that are willing to look toward next year.”

Two weeks away from the deadline, not a whole lot has changed. Is Carolina willing to part with pending unrestricted free agents Eric Staal and Kris Versteeg when they’re only three points out of an Eastern Conference wildcard spot? Is Arizona looking to move talented winger Mikkel Boedker while in a three-way tie for ninth place, only five points out? Has Winnipeg finally given up on a disappointing lost season, and do the Jets have no choice but to move Andrew Ladd after signing Dustin Byfuglien to a five-year, $38 million contract?

These are the questions other teams must answer heading into the deadline.

As for the Hawks, they face different questions: What do they need? What can they afford? And what are they willing to give up?

As currently constituted, the Hawks have the talent and the experience to win their second straight Stanley Cup, and their fourth in seven years. This isn’t even a question. As dominant as the Washington Capitals have been, as proven as the Los Angeles Kings are, as impressive as the Dallas Stars are, the Cup is the Hawks’ to lose until someone knocks them out.

But the Hawks are far from a perfect team. They don’t have the depth they had in 2010, 2013 and 2015, with their third line sputtering offensively and their fourth line a rotating cast of rookies and journeymen. They don’t have the blue-line depth, either, with three rookies in the mix, and a pair of aging veterans in Michal Rozsival and Rob Scuderi. And they’re still lopsided, with only one high-end left winger in Artemi Panarin (trading away Brandon Saad, Patrick Sharp and Kris Versteeg, and demoting Bryan Bickell will have that effect).

The Hawks need a top-six left winger to play alongside Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa (assuming he comes back relatively soon from the apparent left leg injury he suffered Saturday). Seeing how lost the Hawks offense looked without Panarin for two games this week underscored just how shallow they really are – one injury away from disaster.

How they play in Hossa’s absence for the next few games will be telling, too.

And given Erik Gustafsson’s suddenly inconsistent play (Joel Quenneville scratched him Saturday, an alarming sign of trouble), the Hawks also could use a veteran No. 4 defenseman. But even with a little more than $2 million in cap space because of Marcus Kruger’s wrist injury, they probably can’t have both.

The smart move would be to get a winger. Seemingly half the league is in the market for a defenseman, and the price could be too high for the Hawks to compete for the likes of Vancouver’s Dan Hamhuis, Edmonton’s Justin Schultz, or Calgary’s Kris Russell. But there are wingers to be had. Ladd is particularly tantalizing given his Hawks history, but his $4.4 million cap hit complicates matters. Would Bowman be willing to part with pending-UFA Andrew Shaw to make it work? Would he (foolishly) give up 21-year-old Teuvo Teravainen if the Jets would take Bickell’s contract off their hands? It’d be a big splash. And a big risk, either way.

Tampa Bay would want at least one high-end young player back for disgruntled 20-year-old Jonathan Drouin.

Arizona might want a bounty for Boedker. Calgary might ask too much for a 32-year-old Jiri Hudler. Besides, Bowman tends to make savvy lower-profile additions, like Michal Handzus in 2013 and Andrew Desjardins last year. The Antoine Vermette trade last year was an exception, necessitated and facilitated by the cap space freed up when Patrick Kane broke his collarbone. So maybe an under-the-radar veteran such as Versteeg or Toronto’s P.A. Parenteau can be had on the cheap. Or maybe Bowman stands pat, and hopes Kruger’s pending postseason returns makes the difference.

Bowman has options, and he has a little cap space. But he also has holes to fill, and important questions to answer.

And he’s got two weeks to do both.

Note: The Hawks recalled center Vinnie Hinostroza on Sunday and put Hossa on injured reserve (not long-term IR). Hinostroza leads the Rockford IceHogs with 10 goals and 17 assists in 41 games.

Mickelson’s miss on 18 lets Taylor win at Pebble Beach The ASSOCIATED PRESS PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Vaughn Taylor closed with a 7-under-par 65 on Sunday and won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am when Phil Mickelson missed a short birdie putt on the 18th hole.

It was a stunning conclusion for both.

Taylor hasn’t won in more than a decade. He hasn’t had a full PGA Tour card since 2012 and just returned from South America on the Web.com Tour. Now the longtime resident of Augusta, Georgia, gets into the Masters for the first time since 2008.

Mickelson, going for his record-tying fifth victory at Pebble Beach, had a two-shot lead going into the final round.

He made a 12-foot birdie on the 17th and was poised for a simple up-and-down for birdie on the par-5 18th to force a playoff.

His 5-foot birdie caught the lip.

Taylor finished at 17-under 270.

The 45-year-old Mickelson closed with a 72.

New Zealand Women’s Open: At Christchurch, New Zealand, unfazed by an earthquake just before she teed off, topranked Lydia Ko won the tournament for the third time in four years.

The magnitude 5.7 quake rattled the area about 10 minutes before Ko began play. She started the round on time and play wasn’t interrupted by the quake.

Ko closed with a 2-under 70 for a twostroke victory. The 18-year-old South Korean-born New Zealander finished at 10-under 206 at Clearwater Golf Club.

England’s Felicity Johnson, South Korean amateur Hye Jin Choi and Denmark’s Nanna Koerstz Madsen tied for second.

The event was sanctioned by the Ladies European Tour and Australian Ladies PGA. Chubb Classic: At Naples, Florida, Bernhard Langer won for his 26th PGA Champions Tour title, closing with a 1-over 73 for a three-stroke victory.

Seven strokes ahead after opening with rounds of 62 and 66, the 58-year-old German star finished at 15 under 201 at TwinEagles. Fred Couples had a 66 to finish second.

Tshwane Open: At Pretoria, South Africa, Charl Schwartzel ran away with the title, shooting a 7-under 63 for an eight-stroke victory in his home country at Pretoria Country Club. Denmark’s Jeff Winther was second after a 64.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Chase Elliott was too young to really remember celebrating in victory lane with his father, dressed in a shirt that matched Bill Elliott’s firesuit and a little finger pointed toward the sky because daddy was No. 1.

But here’s a father-son snapshot Chase can savor forever: “Awesome Bill” waiting with a big embrace Sunday at Daytona International Speedway for the son who proved he’s capable of following in some Hall of Fame footsteps.

Elliott kept the No. 24 Chevrolet on the pole for the second straight Daytona 500, with the rookie becoming the youngest driver to land the top spot in NASCAR’s biggest race.

“I don’t know if this opportunity has sunk in yet, much less sitting on the pole for the Daytona 500,” Elliott said.

The 20-year-old has the ride of a lifetime, taking the seat from retired fourtime champion Jeff Gordon at Hendrick Motorsports. Gordon was in the broadcast booth at Daytona, calling the shots as the No. 24 went around the track without him for the first time since 1992.

Elliott has some practice following the great ones: His father, Bill, is a twotime Daytona 500 champion.

Without showing the pressure on the track that comes with the ride, Elliott’s top speed was 196.314 mph and he outran 43 others in front-row qualifying Sunday. He also showed that Hendrick cars could be contenders again after taking a backseat to Joe Gibbs Racing and Team Penske in 2015.

Nonetheless, the Gibbs cars continued their strong opening to Speedweeks by putting Matt Kenseth on the front row for the Daytona 500. It came on the heels of Denny Hamlin’s victory in Saturday night’s exhibition race.
