itting in a hospital bed at Centegra Hospital – McHenry, a hospital chaplain walked 84-year-old Teresa Guardi through the different life-sustaining measures the hospital can take – ventilators, dialysis, CPR and feeding tubes. “At my age, why should I care about a ventilator?” the Island Lake resident said. “Mom, you could live to be 100,” her daughter, Pamela Guardi, said from her seat near the door. “I don’t want to live to be 100,” she responded. “All my friends would be gone, and young people don’t want to deal with it.”
What she did want was to only be treated with these methods if the gain outweighed the harm and if she was likely to come out of the treatment with a good quality of

CRYSTAL LAKE – Two fiscal hawks – a longtime Democratic incumbent and a Republican challenger, are vying Nov. 4 to represent the 63rd House District. In a Thursday meeting with the Northwest Herald Editorial Board, Democratic Rep. Jack Franks stood on his record of fighting against tax and spending increases, fighting for smaller government and tax reform, and fighting against now-imprisoned former Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Franks’ opponent, Republican Steven Reick, questioned his achievements, as well as his statements that he acts independently of the wishes of Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan. The 63rd District, which Franks has represented since 1999, covers western and northern McHenry County and includes all or parts of Harvard, Hebron, Marengo, Woodstock, Wonder Lake, McHenry and Johnsburg. Both candidates oppose Gov. Pat Quinn’s desire to make the 67 percent tax increase set to start expiring permanent – Franks voted against the original increase – and both oppose calls to replace the flat income tax with a “progressive” one based on income. But from tax policy to reform, both differed to varying degrees over what is needed to turn around a state in deep financial trouble.

Skiers go after goals at autumn jump FOX RIVER GROVE – Keep the arms in, elongate the body, and point the skis upward to make a “V.” Those are a few important points to remember when ski jumping, junior jumper Cara Larson said Sunday during the 29th annual Norge Autumn Ski Jump in Fox River Grove. and skiers from all over the country. For Cara, the appeal of ski jumping always has been its novelty. “I just like how it’s kind of a unique sport,” she said, adding she picked it up after her older brother started nine years ago. “Plus, I mean, you literally get to fly through the air.” Skiers like Cara came representing the local Norge Ski Club, 100 Ski Hill Road in Fox River Grove, but others came from places such as New York, Minnesota, Wisconsin and
Michigan, according to publicity chairman of the Norge Ski Club Chuck Sedivec. Skiers are judged based on the length of their jumps, as well as their style, Sedivec said. “The winners from every sanctioned tournament can accrue points,” he said, adding the points can help skiers get as far as the Olympics. While Sunday’s event, with its steady but modest crowd, was sanctioned, it was more
