On average, modern homes likely to go up in flames faster than ever

O

nce a fire sparks in your home, you now only have between 180 to 240 seconds on average to get out – and that’s partially because of the material of your couch.

Years ago, you would have about 17 minutes on average before a house or a room in a house turned to flashover – floor-to-ceiling burning with tem-

peratures in the area of 1,500 to 2,000 degrees.

Today, it’s a mere three to four minutes, said John Drengenberg, consumer safety director for Northbrook-based Underwriters Laboratories, a global safety science company.

Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Chief Peter Van Dorpe said this drastic change is because in modern homes, there’s more fuel than there used to be.

Polyurethane foam, a synthetic ma-

terial predominantly found in furniture and other household products today, is recyclable and lighter weight, Van Dorpe said.

“It’s also very, very flammable,” he added.

Crystal Lake Bureau Chief of Fire Prevention Robert Kohley agreed.

“Your natural materials that were used years ago weren’t as flammable,” he said. “Heat and combustion was a slower process.”

And Drengenberg said it’s not just

in couches, but also in products such as curtains, carpeting and pillows.

“Make no mistake, we’re not saying you should change the material in your pillows,” Drengenberg noted.

“It’s just the way it is today.”

The point, he added, is that awareness about fires and fire safety is more important than ever.

Mozart Festival not returning

hprokop@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – The Woodstock Mozart Festival is permanently closing after nearly 30 years in the community.

Anita Whalen, artistic and general director for the festival for the past 24 years, said the decision was made by the festival’s board not to continue with the classical music festival because of a lack of funds.

“There were quite a few misty eyes around the table because this had been going on for so long,” board member Marsha Portnoy said.

Portnoy said the “world-class event” brought in international and local artists to play for the festival, which was held during three weekends in July and August at the Woodstock Opera House.

For years, the festival had to dip into its reserve to pay for the event, Whalen said. The budget to host the event in recent year varied from about $165,000 to $189,000, depending on donations received, she said.

“We just didn’t really have enough

additional support in addition to our ticket sales, and those had been declining over the years, too, just like everywhere else,” Whalen said.

The concerts used to draw crowds of about 2,500 people, but the number dropped in recent years to about 1,500 people, Whalen said.

This year, the board also found out it would not be getting grant money from the MacArthur Fund for Artists and Culture at the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, and it was questionable whether it would receive funding from the Illinois Arts Council Agency.

Whalen said the board had talked about ending the festival for at least a year before making the decision at its December meeting.

Throughout the festival’s time, Whalen said the musicians’ high level of talent was never compromised.

Although it’s ending, Whalen said the Woodstock Mozart Festival had “29 glorious years” and lived out its mission of inspiring and educating audiences of all ages through a chamber orchestral program centered on Mozart.

Zoning board to hear case for Meyer Material’s mining site

cswieca@shawmedia.com CARY – The end state of the Meyer Material Co. mining site on Route 31 likely will be a main topic Thursday at a public hearing on the company’s request for a two-year extension on mining activities.

The Board of Zoning, Planning and Appeals will hear Meyer’s case for an extension at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Holiday Inn, 800 S. Route 31, in Crystal Lake.

The current contract requires mining to be finished by June 1, with restoration of the property finished by June 1, 2018.

Meyer is seeking an extension that would push the overall deadline for mining and restoration to June 1, 2020.

The zoning board will decide whether to recommend an extension, with the Village Board ultimately deciding whether to approve it.

Village Administrator Chris Clark has asked Meyer’s representatives to add details to their presentation Thursday about what the site would look like when work is finished.

If an extension is granted, Clark suggested to the Village Board last week that the village could use its leverage to get Meyer to do extra work toward making the planned lake deep and large enough to accommodate po-

Crystal Lake opened Three Oaks Recreation Jim Cosler Area in 2010 on the site of former gravel pits, but Clark pointed out that the village used more than $14 million of its home rule sales tax funds and other resources Cary currently doesn’t have to upgrade the site.

agreeing to new impact fees and determining where that revenue would go. Past revenue has gone to the village equipment fund and conservancy fund.

Trustee Jim Cosler said he has heard mixed feedback from residents while soliciting opinions on the topic, although most comments have been in favor of an extension.

“There are a lot of factors in this – not only Kim Covelli the impact on neighbors surrounding the property, but also potential revenues,” Cosler said, adding that he and Trustee Kim Covelli plan to go door-to-door in adjacent neighborhoods to hear feedback. “It’s going to take a real long thought process to decide what is best for the community.”

Board rejects cell tower off Route 14

cswieca@shawmedia.com CARY – The Village Board unanimously rejected a proposal to place a 150-foot telecommunications antenna on the property at 30 Route 14, citing concerns about the pole’s height and location.

The antenna proposed by PI Telecom Infrastructure T LLC and T-Mobile USA was 170 feet from the nearest residential property and adjacent to Com-Ed power lines, according to village documents.

The antenna would have required a special use permit because it exceeded 35 feet in height.

Trustees said they were worried the

antenna could hurt retail development prospects on that portion of Route 14, particularly the Selcke property at the southeast corner of Route 14 and Jandus Cut Off Road.

“That’s our corridor when you come in the east,” Trustee Rick Dudek said. “We’ve been trying to develop Selcke’s property for years with little to no interest in it. I think anyJeff Kraus thing we do there to put something in that will be noticeable and somewhat of an eyesore does not help develop that property.”

Street had previously complained to him about the structure.

Several trustees said they realized the village likely would benefit from greater cellphone coverage but would prefer the tower be placed in an industrial area.

A representative from PI Telecommunications said he had tried to reach out to the property owner of the village’s industrial area, but moved on to this site after not receiving any reply to his correspondence.

The topic of developing the Selcke property was raised again later in the meeting when the board approved a drive-thru-only Burger King on Route 14 that it hopes will attract more retailers.

cswieca@shawmedia.com ALGONQUIN – Alan Kirk knows he’s facing a “daunting challenge” in taking over as board president for the Algonquin Founders’ Days festival, but the longtime village resident said keeping the festival alive and thriving is a labor of love.

Kirk has been running the parade associated with the festival since 1998.

When the festival used to be downtown, he and his family could walk from their home near the river.

On the final night, the family usually hosts dozens of friends to watch the fireworks, which are launched from a nearby barge.

“It’s a big deal for us,” Kirk said.

“We kind of mark the passing of the years by Founders’ Days.”

This winter, Kirk took over a board with about 80 percent new members, many of whom had replaced 20-year planning veterans.

The group’s first task will be to move the festival back downtown, where it had taken place for years before construction of the Algonquin Bypass moved it to Algonquin Lakes Park.

As usual, the event will be the last full weekend in July.

The board has been working to incorporate the elements from previous downtown festivals and is looking at adding new events, such as a car show on Sunday or more entertainment.

Organizers still are looking for volunteers to help with planning, particularly people who are willing to be committee chairs.

The festival also will need “dozens and dozens” of volunteers who can help with the festival for a few hours, Kirk said.

ecoleman@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – A round of live ammunition was found at Huntley High School, leading to a search of the building that uncovered no other items, the Huntley Police Department said.

A single bullet was found about 10:15 a.m. Sunday in the hallway near the Performing Arts Center by an attendee of Willow Creek Church, which was using the building at the time, according to a news release.

The bullet was turned over to church personnel, who notified Huntley Community School District 158.

The building was placed on lockdown after church services ended, and the Huntley Police Department –

assisted by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, Cook County Sheriff’s Office and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives K-9 units – conducted a search of the building, the release said.

No other items were found, the release said. The lockdown ended at 4:42 p.m.

The school is cleaned each weeknight by custodial staff, which led the police department to conclude that the bullet likely was not at the school during the day Friday, the release said.

The area where the bullet was found is used by entities outside of the school district.

While the Friends of McHenry County College Foundation awarded over $130,000 in scholarships this academic year, nearly $18,000 in scholarships were not awarded, some because no one applied for them.”

“I think the biggest misconnection for students is they think they have to have a 3.0 GPA and above,” said Dane Walkington, development coordinator for Friends of MCC Foundation. “Most importantly, we want to award these scholarships, so we urge students to apply for them, even if they think they don’t qualify.

“If a student is missing a specific criteria on the scholarship application but shows that he or she is are a deserving recipient and is in good standing with our institution, we can ask the scholarship committee and donor to approve moving forward with awarding the scholarship to the applicant,” Walkington said.

“Our office is here to help students with their application,” he said. “We’ve made the process as simple as possible and work with students so they properly submit items requested for criteria. Whether it is a letter of recommendation, an essay or class schedule, we help them submit the best as possible application.”

MCC officials advise students to get their required information in order now.

“Our donors have made scholarship funding available in a wide variety of areas—elementary education, culinary, nursing, diversity, and more,” said Walkington.

Plans for wastewater treatment plants in works Improvements to cost about $2.7 million, span over village’s next 3 annual budgets

cswieca@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – The village is in the planning stages of making improvements to its wastewater treatment facilities that will put equipment in compliance with new regulatory mandates from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

Upgrades to the east and west treatment plants are projected to cost about $2.7 million total, which will be spread throughout the village’s next three an-

nual budgets.

In January, the Village Board approved a contract with Sugar Grovebased Engineering Enterprises Inc. for design engineering, budgeted at $184,000.

According to village documents, the upgrades were mandated when Huntley received a new National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit in May from the IEPA. The new permit requires the village to reduce its phosphorus effluent discharge to be at or below 1 milligram per

liter by November 2018.

Village Engineer Timothy Farrell said the EPA mandate was spurred on by concerns about hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico.

Nutrients such as phosphorus can cause algae growth, and it consumes oxygen and disrupts the ecosystem, he said.

The village also is required to submit three planning documents to the IEPA

by Nov. 30.

Farrell said the EPA is using those to determine how much it would cost municipalities to lower their discharge level further below 1 milligram per liter with an eye toward the future.

“Basically, they’re asking us to look into our system and asking if we can

identify any businesses that might be discharging phosphorus into the water,” Farrell said. “They also ask us to look at ways we can improve our treatment inside our facility to get to very low levels.”

Farrell said the village had prepared for these upgrades in its 2016-2020 strategic plan.

Huntley is in the Kishwaukee River watershed, but he said officials in the Fox River watershed have been discussing phosphorus regulations for some time.

Upgrades to the west plant will cost $1.4 million, and the east plant will cost $940,000, with the costs split evenly between the 2017 and 2018 budgets, according to budget documents.

The first will be from 8 a.m. until about 5 p.m. April 6, when attendees will depart from McHenry County College for a tour of Chicago’s Chinatown. The day will include a tour of the Chinese American Museum of Chicago, as well as visits to grocery stores and gift shops.

“I think, part of it, people are looking for just an open conversation, a struggle,” Fistler said. “Our approach is that we don’t have it figured out by a long shot. It’s mainly us struggling with it and challenging each other. It’s just a conversation between friends about the biblical text, which we both take so very seriously.”

Reporter Emily K. Coleman sat down with Fistler to talk about the podcast and his work as a pastor.

Coleman: Let’s start with why you decided to become a pastor.

Fistler: I got my call to the ministry

I planned to go anywhere but Augustana [College] because that’s where my sister went. I looked at a lot of different schools and interviewed at a lot of different schools and got accepted at several different schools, but ultimately knew that Augustana was the place for me.

When I graduated seminary, I said, “God, I’ll go wherever you want. I just don’t want to work with children. Christian education is not my thing.” And my first call was to Edwards Church in Northampton, [Massachusetts,] as the minister of education, predominantly working at rebuilding the Sunday school. It was profound. It was great. It was exactly where I needed to be.

He’s one of my best friends. We’re talking about church and things like that.

Both of us had served rural congregations, or rural-ish I should say. Both of us talked about how isolating the ministry can be and how we wanted an opportunity to engage in regular conversation, a conversation of pastors talking about the scripture for the week, because we missed that from seminary. That’s where the conversation began.

It’s really grown, inviting not just pastors but also anybody into a deeper engagement with the text and what it is saying for us today, how is it challenging us, how is it pushing us, how is it comforting us, and what is the good news in it. ... Then it’s grown, too, to now monthly.

We have interviews predominantly with authors along sometimes with musicians or professors or other pastors.

Eugene A. Adams, age 95, of McHenry, Illinois, died at Alden Terrace Nursing Center Saturday, February 6, 2016.

ELISA MENDIOLA Born: June 14, 1943 Died: Feb. 5, 2016

Elisa Mendiola, 72, Woodstock IL, passed away on February 5, 2016, at JourneyCare Hospice leaving this world with a fight to the very end.

She was born on June 14, 1943, in Texas and moved to Chicago, IL. She was the widow of Jose Mendiola II, who died July 24, 2008.

Elisa is survived by her mother, Delia Vasquez; her two sons, Jose (Maria) Mendiola III, Al Mendiola (Melissa Nowman); and daughter, Evelyn (Stephen) Garrelts; brothers, Louis Vasquez and Jose Vasquez; sisters, Irene Pena and Rosa (Armando) Herrera; grandchildren, Celina (Angel) Torres, Jose (Shannon) Mendiola IV, Eliza Mendiola, John David Mendiola, Alexandria Mendiola, Jessica Mendiola, Stephen Garrelts II, Gabriella Garrelts, Marcus Garrelts and Vannessa Garrelts; adopted grandsons, Jake and Brock Bernhardt; 10 great grandchildren; many loving nieces and nephews; and abundance of cherished friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Jose Mendiola II; sister, Erlinda (Eddie) Villarreal; and brothers, Rueben Vasquez, and John Vasquez.

Elisa made the biggest mark on so many lives and people’s hearts. She was a kind, amazing, strong, stubborn but most of all beautiful person inside and out. She was one to be the first to give a helping hand and her famous saying was “Where there is a will there is a way” and she sure found many ways! She loved cooking for whoever would visit her and enjoyed spending time with all her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend with a strong passion for life and people.

Heaven’s gain is our loss and she will be missed dearly. God saw her getting tired, when a cure was not to be. PHYLLIS A. MOHLER

Born: Oct. 21, 1930; in Evanston, IL Died: Feb. 3, 2016; in Crystal Lake, IL Phyllis A. Mohler, 85, passed away on Wednesday, February 3, 2016, in Crystal Lake, Illinois.

She was born October 21, 1930, in Evanston, IL. Following her graduation from Evanston Township High School in 1948, Phyllis attended the Northern Illinois State Teachers College. She married Douglas Mohler on September 29, 1951, at the First Methodist Church in Evanston and in 1955 she and Doug moved to Mundelein where they raised their children, which remained their home for over 50 years.

Phyllis had gifts of artistry, teaching, leadership, and loving care which she shared throughout her life. Phyllis was very active in church and civic life and had created floral arrangements for the church altar every week for over 50 years. She was a founder of the Mundelein Art League and was active in Women’s Club and several garden clubs.

Flower gardening was a passion and her yard was beautiful. Phyllis volunteered at the Chicago Botanic Garden where she was a member and was also a Master Gardener and judged flower shows. Phyllis loved teaching, taught art classes privately, was a long time teacher’s aide at Mundelein H.S. and was also a merit badge counsellor for the Boy Scouts.

The Mohler house was a warm gathering place and second home for many who knew Phyllis as Mom. Phyllis was a hugger with a big heart and unconditional love she shared freely.

Surviving is her sister, Geraldine Yohe of Forsythe, MO; brother, Kenneth Collins (Debbie) of Powder Springs, GA; children, Jeffrey (Sheila) Mohler of Crystal Lake, Forrest (Mary) Mohler of Hendersonville, NC and Heather Levchenko of San Diego, CA; grandchildren, Scott (Jenny) Mohler, Jacob (Leigh Anne) Mohler, Nathaniel (Vanessa) Mohler, Meghan (Scott) Castellini, Robert Mohler and Daria Levchenko; great-grandchildren, Sam, Emi, Isla, and Hadley Mohler; honorary daughters, Kelli Quinn and Karen Peterson; and numerous nieces and nephews. Phyllis had also been blessed with many foreign exchange students who have been as sons and daughters to her, including Naouki Fukushima of Japan, Pia Zeller of Colorado, Robert Kroc of Germany and Lena Nilsson of Sweden.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 PM Monday, February 8, 2016, at the Burnett-Dane Funeral Home Ltd., 120 W. Park Ave. (Route 176, one block west of Milwaukee Ave.) in Libertyville. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 9, 2016,

at the funeral home.

William was born on March 7, 1928, in Scotland the son of Edward and Martha (Kirkwood) Thomas. He married his late wife Margaret on March 7, 1953, in MuirkirkAyshire, Scotland.

William was an avid golfer and Premiere League Football enthusiast. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Another factor that plays into faster fires is the shift away from compartmentalized homes to open floor plans, Drengenberg said.

“Part of what we’re learning is that we have to coordinate our ventilation and suppression better,” he said, explaining that training now emphasizes specific tempo and timing for such coordination.

Another change is related to search techniques, Van Dorpe said.

Firefighters were not traditionally taught to close the door after leaving a room, he explained.

“We’re teaching guys that you have to be much more cognizant of that,” he said.

Artists sought for animal shelter’s annual fundraiser Helping Paws Animal Shelter is sponsoring its second annual Art for the Paws fundraiser and community outreach project.

Artists of all abilities and skill levels are encouraged to participate by creating works of art in a variety of media on 6-inch-by-6-inch canvases.

Participants can buy up to two blank canvases for a donation of $5 each.

Canvases are available at Helping Paws Animal Shelter, 2500 Harding Lane, Woodstock; The Studio Art School, 3316 Pearl St., McHenry; and Fabric, Fiber & Finds, 5150 Route 14, Crystal Lake.

All artwork will be available to buy through an online auction, with bids starting at a minimum of $25. Proceeds

will benefit Helping Paws, a nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter.

Completed canvases are due by 4 p.m. Feb. 29. Each work of art will be photographed and displayed on the Art for the Paws Facebook page and on the auction website. A portion of the canvases will be mounted together to form a mosaic that will be displayed at the Woodstock Public Library from March 10 through April 7 and in the window of Jaci’s Cookies on the Woodstock Square from March 28 through April 8. SPRINGFIELD – Lawmakers of all stripes have pledged support in recent weeks for overhauling the state’s outdated school funding formula, a nearly 30-year-old system that nearly everyone agrees penalizes students in poorer districts.

But the issue once again faces long odds in this spring’s legislative session, amid a reluctance to balance the formula by taking away funds from more welloff school districts, especially during an election year. Some lawmakers say the issue can’t be dealt with until more funds are available to distribute.

That likely ties the matter to the eight-month-old budget standoff between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic leaders, and perhaps an agreement on restoring the state’s expired income tax hike.

“If you need votes (to approve an overhaul), it’s very difficult when you take away 30 percent of a district’s budget,” said Democratic Rep. Barbara Flynn Currie, a top lieutenant to House Speaker Michael Madigan.

Rauner, who pledged during his State of the State address last month to work with Democrats on improving education, appears to agree. “I won’t allow some school districts to give up money to give to other school districts,” he said last week.

CHICAGO – A Christian college near Chicago and a political science professor who wore a headscarf to show solidarity with Muslims have agreed to part ways.

Wheaton College said in a statement on its website Saturday that the college and Dr. Larycia Hawkins “have reached a confidential agreement under which they

will part ways.”

Hawkins, who’s Christian, was placed on leave in December when she posted on Facebook that Christians and Muslims worship the same God. College officials said at the time that her views were inconsistent with their “doctrinal convictions.”

Illinois owes Springfield hospitals $76 million

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois owes Springfield’s two largest hospitals $76 million for the care of state workers, retirees and dependents, an amount that continues to grow because of the state’s budget impasse.

The State Journal-Register reported Memorial Medical Center is owed $46.3 million from the State Employees’ Group Health Insurance Program. The hospital also is owed $10.9 million in Medicaid bills.

Chief Executive Officer Edgar Curtis said the not-for-profit hospital isn’t going to lay off any workers, freeze hiring or downsize any programs that affect patients.

BEDFORD, N.H. – Marco Rubio’s uneven debate performance just days before Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary has emboldened a trio of governors seeking to stem his rise in the Republican race for president. But if Rubio’s rivals can slow him in New Hampshire, they are likely to leave the GOP with a muddled mix of establishment contenders and no clear favorite to challenge Donald Trump and Ted Cruz.

At the heart of the battle between Rubio and Chris Christie, John Kasich and Jeb Bush is whether the freshman Florida senator has the experience and policy depth to serve as president – or whether he’s simply a well-spoken lightweight.

Christie unleashed withering attacks against Rubio in Saturday’s debate, and the New Jersey governor tripped up Rubio by calling him out in real-time for his reliance on rehearsed talking points.

The morning after, Christie declared the Republican contest a changed race.

“There was a march amongst some in the chattering class to anoint Sen. Rubio,” Christie said on CNN’s State of the Union. “I think after last night, that’s over.”

Christie and his fellow governors need that to be the case, given that they’ve staked their White House hopes on New Hampshire. Without

a strong showing, each will face enormous pressure to drop out from Republican Party leaders eager to rally around a single candidate who can challenge Cruz and Trump, the top-two finishers in the lead-off Iowa caucuses.

Trump has held a commanding lead in New Hampshire preference polls for months. Cruz is in the mix with Rubio and the governors, although his campaign is more focused on the Southern states later in the primary calendar.

The prospect of Trump or Cruz winning the GOP nomination has set many Republican leaders on edge, and that anxiousness is only likely to increase should New Hampshire voters leave Rubio and the governors clustered together in the primary results, failing to anoint one as their preferred challenger to the front-runners.

Rubio emerged from Iowa looking as though he was that candidate, with a third-place finish in Iowa that was stronger than expected. Rival campaigns conceded privately in the days leading up to the debate he was pulling away from the governors. But the Florida senator stumbled in the debate when challenged about his qualifications.

For Barbara O’Brien, an undecided voter who had been considering voting for Rubio, it was enough to convince her he wasn’t the right choice.

“He kept saying the same thing over and over again,” said O’Brien, 67, from Manchester who is one of New Hampshire’s many independents.

Clinton attacks ringing hollow It’s nice work if you can get it: In 2013, after stepping down as secretary of state, Hillary Clinton earned $9.7 million in speaking fees – a lot of it from banks and investment firms, including $675,000 for three speeches to Goldman Sachs.

Those three speeches are not on her campaign website, but it’s a pretty good bet they had a different tone than the one she is now taking. Asked about them at a New Hampshire town hall meeting last week, her response started out merely vague – “Look, I made speeches to lots of groups” – before becoming reckless: “I’m out here every day saying I’m going to shut them down, I’m going after them. I’m going to jail them if they should be jailed. I’m going to break them up.”

By all means, criminals – in any industry, including politics – should be jailed. It’s also true there are bad actors in the financial industry, as there are everywhere, and that Wall Street needs smarter regulations to reduce risks. Finally, it was an unscripted remark in the second half of a two-hour town hall that started at 9 p.m.

Still: Clinton’s attack was careless and overly broad. The industry that helped enrich her also plays a central role in the economy – helping families afford homes, entrepreneurs launch small businesses, governments build schools and seniors retire comfortably. Although this shouldn’t need saying, it does, given the tenor of the presidential campaign: The vast majority of men and women who work in the industry are honest.

Like most politicians, Clinton never has been shy about asking those who work in finance for campaign contributions, and she ably represented the industry during her eight years as a senator from New York. If her views on the financial industry have changed since she accepted those millions of dollars in speaking fees, perhaps she ought to explain why. And the next time she’s invited to speak to Wall Street, perhaps she ought to decline the fee. It would be the decent thing to do.

I used to have this poster in my office reflecting the timeless wisdom of a relief pitcher named Larry Andersen. Today, he does radio broadcasts for the Philadelphia Phillies. A friend who’s a calligrapher made it for me.

“Hey, you’re only young once, but you can be immature forever.”

The poster got lost after we moved, and my wife doesn’t miss it. Possibly because it reflects an aspect of my personality she’s sometimes uneasy with: The part that helps me do a pretty good Donald Trump impression. The part that reflects my bygone youth in New Jersey, the Insult State.

The part that makes her laugh until I imitate Trump attacking Hillary Clinton as a woman The Donald would not want to see naked.

The accent, gestures and exaggerated mugging all come easy. You’ve just got to imagine a chimpanzee with a trust fund. See, if he hadn’t inherited a couple of hundred million bucks from his old man, Trump would have ended up cheating used car buyers and standing around on New York street corners patting his groin and hooting at passing women with the other primates.

How Trump reacts to finishing second in Iowa remains to be seen.

I’m guessing the minute he realizes he can’t bulldoze and bluff his way to the presidency, he’s gone, but at least he’s given us some laughs, more than you can say for most of them.

Which brings us to Trump’s big celebrity feud with Fox News head blonde Megyn Kelly. Has any victim of The Donald’s verbal assaults ever benefited more from his scorn?

Before the two tangled during the first GOP presidential debate, Kelly was best known among the cable channel’s audience of AARP All-Stars as a foot soldier in the annual “War on Christmas” who once indignantly assured viewers that Santa Claus is a white man.

Now thanks to Trump, she’s a name brand.

It’ll be interesting to watch where the notoriety takes her. At 45, she’s probably too old to be the fourth Mrs. Trump, but wouldn’t that be an entertaining premise for a bad movie?

The feud began, as the world knows, when Kelly, an incisive interviewer, asked The Donald about his practice of calling women “fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals.”

He tried to joke his way out of it, but Kelly doubled down, asking about the time he told a contestant on “Celebrity Apprentice” how cute she’d look on her knees.

A classic bully, Trump whined that Kelly was biased.

“You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her

Bickering continued until The Donald tried to make Fox News drop Kelly as moderator of its next GOP debate, which he vowed to boycott unless he got his way. CEO Roger Ailes called his bluff. Refusing to show up now looks like a mistake after Iowa. Trump’s going to bully foreign leaders into submission, but a TV executive defied him and he’s afraid of a girl?

Not good for the brand.

Smarting, Trump then said he wouldn’t call Kelly a “bimbo” because it would be “politically incorrect.” That’s Republican-speak for refusing to call a spade a spade. (Wink, wink. Nudge, nudge. Know what they mean?)

Next he reposted some pinup shots of Kelly on Twitter: “Criticizes Trump for objectifying women. Poses like this in GQ magazine.”

I hesitate to admit that I laughed out loud.

Low-cut negligee, “Hello, Sailor” look and all, Kelly didn’t much resemble Walter Cronkite.

Not that valuing women strictly as sexual objects was what Kelly complained about, but whatever else you can say about Trump, he’s got a subversive sense of humor.

Should it matter that Mrs. Donald Trump, version 3.0, has herself posed buck nekkid for GQ? Perhaps not, but it’s funny too.

I wonder if Mrs. Trump’s prenuptial agreement is fully vested. Because it’s hard to think that first lady is a role that would suit her. In some ways, the White House is the jewel of the federal penitentiary system.

Meanwhile, Washington Post reporter Janell Ross, seemingly not from New Jersey, asked some pertinent questions: “Doesn’t the content of that tweet ... strongly support the core theories behind the question that Kelly asked Trump in the very first debate? Is a man who seems to view assessments of women based largely or perhaps only on their appearance fit for the Oval Office in 2016? And, if he is, what are the political ramifications of putting him in office and giving him the bully pulpit?”

The correct answers are: yes, no, and more of the same.

But Melania can rest easy, because it’s not going to happen.

Dear Abby: Nine years ago, I married a man who has a son from a previous marriage.

“Eli” is now 26 and lives “on his own.” While he may live under a different roof than his parents, they support him financially.

My husband and I pay Eli’s car insurance, cellphone bill, toll tag, life insurance policy and whatever other things come up (passport, gym membership). Eli’s mom assists with all of his utility bills, in addition to depositing money in his account monthly. They even turned over Eli’s 529 tuition account to him.

I have tried explaining to my husband they are enabling Eli, and the umbilical cord should have been cut years ago.

Eli has never earned more than $12,000 a year, and has no desire to try because he has an endless flow of financial support.

His dad is retired but continues to work in order to help Eli – although he won’t admit it.

This is straining our relationship because when I bring up this issue, he feels I am attacking his son. Am I unrealistic to expect an adult to support himself? – Seeing Clearly In

Cause of nightmares a mystery Note to readers: This column is an update of one that ran originally in November 2012.

Dear Dr. K: Is there anything I can do to stop

having terrible nightmares? They scare me, and ruin my sleep.

Dear Reader: There might be something you can do. The first thing you should know is everyone has nightmares occasionally. Just as we don’t really know why we sleep, we don’t really understand nightmares. We also don’t know why some people are more likely to have them.

Nightmares and two related phenomena – sleep terrors and sleep-related panic attacks – can make sleep more stressful than restful: • Nightmares can be a side effect of certain medications. These include antidepressants, narcotics and barbiturates. So talk to your doctor to see if any medication you’re taking might be contributing to your problem.

Nightmares also can occur if you stop taking certain drugs, including drugs used to treat them (such as benzodiazepines), if those drugs are stopped abruptly. Alcoholics who stop drinking often have nightmares.

If your frequent nightmares are not likely due to medicines you are taking, then counseling may help. You may be wrestling with problems that cause anxiety – and would cause anyone anxiety.

A type of behavioral therapy known as desensitization may help. In this therapy, you will be asked to recall the details of your nightmare and use relaxation techniques to overcome your fear. The therapist may guide you through typical dream sequences. For example, the therapist can help you imagine confronting or driving off a pursuer.

Some doctors recommend psychoanalysis to identify and resolve past and present emotional issues that may be playing

• During a sleep terror, the sleeper may let out a bloodcurdling scream, sit bolt upright and attempt to fight or flee. The person may seem confused and agitated. After the spell is over, he or she is likely to go right back to sleep. Later, the person might not remember what happened.

If you consistently remember your nightmares, you’re probably not suffering from sleep terrors.

Medications such as benzodiazepines are sometimes prescribed for sleep terrors.

Hypnosis or a relaxation technique known as guided imagery also may help.

• If you have sleep-related panic attacks, you may awaken suddenly because of episodes of intense panic. You may experience a racing heartbeat, sweating, trembling, breathlessness, or the feeling something terrible is about to happen – as if you are about to die.

Anti-anxiety drugs are often useful for such panic attacks.

The cause of these sleep disorders is a mystery. They might seem like a trivial mystery, but I think if we understood them, we’d understand a lot more about how the brain works.

As I mentioned last week, when you are thinking about game, not slam, your goal should be to reach four hearts or four spades. If each of those contracts is deemed impossible, then you look toward three no-trump. Only if certain those three games are hopeless will you steer into five of a minor.

As an example, look at the North hand. You open one club, and partner responds one heart. What would you rebid?

After the preamble, the answer is easier than it might have been.

Bid two hearts, not two clubs or one no-trump. Then South will presumably jump to four hearts. (If he rebids three no-trump, and West leads a spade, South will have to guess well.)

How should South plan the play after a spade start to East’s queen?

This contract requires careful handling. If declarer wins the first trick with his ace, draws trumps, and takes the club finesse, he ought to go down. East should return a spade, and South will lose two spades, one diamond and one club. Instead, the simplest line is to run the club 10 at trick two. Even if East ducks, and declarer repeats the finesse, he is still safe. Probably, though, East will take his club king immediately and shift to a diamond, but South plays his king (or queen) and cannot lose more than one trick in each side suit.

SUPER BOWL 50: BRONCOS 24, PANTHERS 10

Sentimental favorite wins out VIEWS Hub Arkush SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The romantics and true believers got their wish. The iconic Peyton Manning rode off into the California sunset with the Lombardi Trophy in one hand and a $2 million bonus check for winning the Super Bowl in the other.

He did not confirm his retirement, instead, asking for a little bit of time and promising to “kiss my wife and kids and drink a lot of Budweiser tonight while I think things over.”

It seems certain Manning will hang ’em up, although as his performance in this game made clear again – 13 for 23 for 141 yards, no touchdowns, one interception, a fumble and a 56.6 passer rating – his defense is winning with him, perhaps even in spite of him, not because of him.

In fact, as football games go, everything about Denver’s 24-10 Super Bowl 50 win was strange.

All of the ancillary events we’ve come to expect from the NFL’s super extravaganza were good.

San Francisco is a great city, and all of the locals were extremely gracious hosts.

The weather was perfect, 73 degrees at kickoff under cloudless, crisp blue skies.

Lady Gaga absolutely nailed the national anthem, and the somewhat strange conglomeration of Coldplay, Beyonce and Bruno Mars made for a surprisingly satisfying halftime show.

There were issues, of course, but none worth griping about. Everything about Super Bowl 50 was great, except, unfortunately, for the game.

The 60 minutes of action on the field between the Broncos and Panthers was pretty much a hot mess, one of the sloppiest games the Super Bowl has seen in a long time.

Or was it just two great defenses making a ton of plays and the best defense won?

Both Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware were dominant all day/night long, and in a bit of a shocker, Carolina’s Kony Ealy was the best player on the field with three sacks, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

All three were worthy MVP candidates.

The first quarter was near perfect for Denver, with Manning driving them 64 yards on 10 plays with the opening kickoff before settling for a

Denver held the Panthers to a three-and-out on their first possession, and when Carolina got the ball the second time, on third-and-10 from the Panthers’ 15, Miller – who won the MVP Award with 2½ sacks and two key forced fumbles – sacked and stripped Cam Newton at the 4 and Malik Jackson recovered in the end zone for a 10-0 lead.

It only got messier from there, more so for the Panthers than Broncos, but both teams made more than

enough plays to lose and had plenty of chances to win.

Consider these numbers: The Panthers were 3 for 16 on third-down conversion attempts, while Denver was 1 for 14.

Newton was sacked seven times for 67 yards in losses; Manning went down five times for 37 yards.

Carolina committed 11 penalties for 87 yards, including six false starts.

Denver only had six penalties for 51 yards, but the game was really chippy with three of flags on the Broncos being unnecessary roughness calls, and four of those on Carolina.

There were six turnovers, four by the Panthers and two from Denver.

Carolina managed only 315 yards of total offense; the Broncos only 194.

So we ponder the question again, was Super Bowl 50 really great defense or just a disappointing football game?

What we can say for sure is New-

ton, the extremely worthy MVP of the regular season, was awful, completing only 18 of his 41 throws, and his unwillingness to fight for his second fumble with 4:04 left in the game and his team still down only six will be discussed all winter and spring.

However, even if the game was disappointing, the Broncos are anything but disappointing champions.

Their defense now will be compared to the Steelers, Bears and Ravens’ great Super Bowl teams, they overcame a remarkable number of obstacles just to get to Super Bowl 50 and now they will have the rings that make it all worth it.

In the end, anyone who isn’t thrilled for Manning just doesn’t have a heart.

This one was recovered by safety T.J. Ward at the Carolina 4, and soon thereafter, C.J. Anderson’s 2-yard run sealed the victory for Denver (15-4).

Earlier, Miller laid a big hit on Newton near the sideline. He also shared a third-down sack with Derek Wolfe to get Denver the ball back at the end of the third quarter.

And, showing his versatility, the 6-foot-3, 250-pound Miller even made plays in pass coverage, dropping back to force an incompletion from Newton to Jerricho Cotchery at one point.

It was all part of quite a display by Miller and the rest of Denver’s defense, making the NFC champion Panthers (17-2) and their No. 1-ranked offense look mediocre at best.

Newton struggles in his 1st Super Bowl

The Associated Press SANTA CLARA, Calif. – A dejected Cam Newton sat slouching behind the podium Sunday night, wearing a black Panthers hoodie and a frown.

The league’s top player this season didn’t feel much like answering questions, doing so mostly in delayed oneand two-word answers. Some questions he just let pass without answering at all – except for one which said it all.

“They made more plays than us and that’s what it comes down to,” Newton said during a brief three-minute interview after Carolina’s 24-10 Super Bowl 50 loss to Denver. “We had our opportunities and it was nothing special that they did. We dropped balls. We turned the ball over. We gave up sacks. We threw errant passes. That’s it.”

Newton’s dream season ended with a nightmare performance.

Fresh off being earning his first MVP award Saturday night, the Panthers fifth-year quarterback was stymied by an aggressive Denver Broncos defense in his first Super Bowl appearance on Sunday.

The 6-foot-5, 245-pound quarterback who scored 45 touchdowns during the regular season – and five more in the playoffs – failed to produce a TD running or throwing for the first time this season. Carolina’s only score came on a 1-yard run by Jonathan Stewart.

Newton didn’t get a chance to give any balls away to kids on the front row of Levi’s Stadium.

“This is one those things that is going to hurt,” Rivera said of Newton. “It’s going to hurt everybody for a while and hopefully after a few days we will get over it.”

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Von Miller was second-to-none in the Super Bowl.

Five years after being drafted No. 2 behind Cam Newton, Denver linebacker Miller harassed Carolina’s quarterback from start to finish Sunday, forcing two fumbles, compiling 2½ sacks and earning MVP honors while helping the Broncos beat the Panthers, 24-10, in a showdown between a couple of shutdown defenses.

“I’m so proud of my guys,” Miller said, clutching the silver Lombardi Trophy. “It’s been every last one of you guys in the locker room that’s gotten us to this moment right here.”

Miller really was everywhere – and he did a bit of everything.

He created Denver’s first touchdown by zooming past right tackle Mike Remmers and breaking in on Newton to rip the football away from the QB, who was honored as the regular-season MVP on Saturday night.

The fumble bounced into the end zone, where defensive end Malik Jackson landed on it to put the Broncos ahead 10-0 about 81/2 minutes into the game.

With 4 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Miller set up Denver’s only other TD, too. Again, he got past Remmers and, as the offensive lineman grabbed a fistful of his white jersey, Miller reached out with his left hand to grab Newton’s right arm as the quar-

Shorthanded, deep in his own end along the boards and with a pair of Dallas forwards converging on him, Niklas Hjalmarsson had a split second to decide whether to be safe or to be aggressive, whether to simply clear the puck, or to take a chance and make a play.

Artem Anisimov already had decided.

Anisimov, already heading up ice, looked over his right shoulder and briefly made eye contact with Hjalmarsson, who lobbed the puck toward center ice at Anisimov’s feet. Anisimov beat Stars defenseman Alex Goligoski to the bouncing puck, deftly chipped it ahead to himself and twice fended off the stick of defenseman John Klingberg before putting the puck past goaltender Kari Lehtonen and crashing jubilantly into the end boards.

It was a spectacular effort by Anisimov, who never hesitated. He rarely does on the penalty kill, frequently generating offensive zone time and occasional scoring chances with daring decision-making. He has six shorthanded shots on the season, and has scored on three of them – a sign of how smart he is at picking his spots.

Like the more touted Marian Hossa and Jonathan Toews, who combined for another shorthanded goal in Saturday’s 5-1 rout of Dallas, Anisimov is an expert penalty killer, but still a threat to score when down a man.

“If we have a chance to score, go,” Anisimov said of his thought process.

“The first thing is to play responsible in our end. But if I have a chance to go, I just read the game and [you can get] great chances.”

All it takes is one bobble at the blue line, one ill-timed line change, one out-of-position point man. The Hawks have seven shorthanded goals this season, including three in their past two games. Toews and Anisimov each have three, and Hossa – the active NHL leader in shorties with 31 – has the other.

“You kind of have to have some luck, too,” Hjalmarsson said. “You can have your chances if they have a couple guys too high, and maybe get an odd-man break. But I can’t really explain why we’ve scored so many of them lately.”

Well, part of it is the Hawks are giving themselves plenty of opportunities, with a disconcerting 12 penalties in the past two games. But the other part is

Anisimov, who has been such a revelation for the Hawks this season. Just as he’s helped give the Hawks a formidable second line behind the Toews-Hossa grouping, he’s given the Hawks a dangerous second penalty-killing unit behind the Toews-Hossa duo, combining the injured Marcus Kruger’s knack for blocking shots and getting clears with Toews and Hossa’s ability to flip the ice in an instant.

Anisimov now has 18 goals this season, just four shy of his career high set in 2013-14 with Columbus, and a whopping 11 more than he had last season.

“I shouldn’t say [it’s] a surprise, I knew he was a good player,” Hjalmarsson said. “But the way he’s been playing for us so far has been great to see, especially how that whole [second] line is balanced. He’s the perfect player to play with those two guys, [Patrick Kane and Artemi Panarin]. Big body, responsible with the puck, and at the same time, he’s a skilled player that can play a skilled game with those two guys. It’s fun to be on the ice with those three guys, and he’s been a perfect match for us.”

Anisimov was brought in to be the long-awaited stabilizing force at second-line center, a big, reliable, defensively responsible center. But he’s proven to be more than that – yet another potent weapon in the Hawks’ arsenal, whether it’s at even strength, on the power play, or yes, even shorthanded.

“He’s been a very big part of our team this year,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said. “He’s been terrific in a lot of ways.”

As a three-sport athlete throughout her high school career, Kianna Clark embraced her busy schedule.

“I’ve never done just one sport,” said Clark, a Crystal Lake South graduate. “That seems so odd to me.”

So when Clark transitioned to college at NCAA Division II Lewis University in Romeoville, being part of multiple teams was an easy decision.

“I’ve played soccer for the longest, so I knew I didn’t want to give that up,” she said. “With track, I had a lot of success in high school, so I wanted to continue it.”

Clark is following up on her soccer success this fall with a strong start to the indoor track season.

In last month’s NAIA vs. NCAA Challenge in Bourbonnais, Clark launched the weight – a new event for her – 44 feet, 1½ inches.

“It’s fun and exciting to try something new,” she said. “It’s so different. It’s like a 20-pound dumbbell on a little chain.”

Adjusting to the new event required a unique schedule.

“A lot of my teammates trained for it while I was in soccer season, so I missed out on that,” she said. “Over winter break, I did a lot of spins with the weight and finally nailed it. It all started to come together.”

Clark also has contributed in the shot put and sprints, a unique combination of events. “[The shot put] is something I picked up in middle school, and I’ve loved it ever since,” she said.

“Growing up, I realized I had a decent amount of speed, and I stuck with it.”

Clark broke a personal goal at the Bourbonnais meet by surpassing the 40-foot barrier. Her throw of 40-9¾ ranks eighth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

“Finally getting into the 40s in the shot put was great,” she said. “I was so close in high school. I definitely feel like I’ve had a successful start, and I feel I can get better. I’m excited.”

ON CAMPUS Barry Bottino In soccer, Clark expected a slow start to her career. Instead, the midfielder/defender started every match for the Flyers (10-7-2).

“Being a starter as a freshman is still eye-opening when I look back on it,” she said. “I’m excited about the impact I was able to have on the team. It definitely builds my confidence to want to get better.”

Fueling Lake Forest: Thanks to a career-high 26 points last weekend against Monmouth College, Crystal Lake Central grad Kelsey Schmitt was recognized Feb. 1 as the Midwest Conference Performer of the Week in women’s basketball.

A sophomore guard at D-III Lake Forest College, Schmitt scored nine points in the fourth quarter against MWC foe Monmouth, including the go-ahead basket with 21 seconds left of a 70-67 victory. Schmitt’s late basket helped the Foresters erase a 14-point deficit.

Schmitt is the team’s third-leading scorer at 10.5 points a game for Lake Forest (11-7).

On Thursday, Schmitt also was named the school’s Forester Athlete of the Week.

Augie football honors: D-III Augustana College announced Tuesday that Huntley grad Josh Symbal and Prairie Ridge grad Danny Giffels were among the football program’s annual team award winners.

Symbal, a senior linebacker, was honored with Augie’s Jerry Freck Award. The honor is named after the school’s late team manager from the 1970s and recognizes an athlete for character, being a team player and contributing wherever possible to the team’s success.

Giffels was one of two defensive players to win the program’s Coaches’ Award. He played in five games this season, contributing five total tackles.

ISLAND LAKE – Tim Baumgartner hunches over his red bowling ball at the end of the lane, concentrating.

It’s a Monday afternoon on the first day of February. As he is on so many afternoons, Baumgartner is at 3D Bowl.

The lanky 28-year-old from McHenry takes two slow steps – right, left.

Then two quick shuffles. Right. Left.

He hurls the ball down the lane, sending it spinning at the pins. The ball hooks, narrowly missing its target.

Baumgartner turns and shakes his head.

“Bowling is a funny game,” he said.

“I threw a strike on my first ball but left the last three frames open ... but everyone throws a bad one sometimes.”

For a bowler of Baumgartner’s caliber, those “bad ones” come less and less frequently.

On Jan. 15, Baumgartner accomplished what is to many bowlers a lifelong pursuit when he tossed a perfect 300. It takes 12 consecutive strikes to complete a perfect game.

What’s perhaps more impressive is that over a three-game series, he averaged 275 and bowled 21 consecutive strikes.

“The bowling alley exploded,” Baumgartner said.

Baumgartner, who has autism, was introduced to bowling when he was 13. With the Northern Illinois Special Recreation Association, he competed in a couple sports. But bowling quickly became his game.

He was invited to join a men’s league and started digesting every aspect of the game. He now can tell you about the oil of the lane (medium on this day), the weight of the pins (three

different surfaces,” he said. “Dull balls are for heavy oil. Shiny balls are for medium to dry lanes.”

As Baumgartner’s passion for the sport grew, so too did his scores. On a shelf in his room, he keeps plastic-coated pins with numbers to mark his highest scores – 255, 267, 276, 288.

He had approached 300 in the past and would feel his legs shake with the magnitude of the moment. But during his perfect game, he locked in with his repeatable delivery, staring at the same arrows halfway down the lane.

“I just focused on my next ball and threw it,” he said. “I think of it this way: If I hit my mark, I’ll get a strike.

And if you’re slightly off, you won’t get a strike.”

When he’s not bowling, Baumgartner watches the Blackhawks or the Bulls. (Jimmy Butler is his favorite player.)

Or he plays classic video games with his buddies such as Super Mario and Pac-Man and –of course – Wii Bowling (where he also has bowled several perfect games).

But even at home, his mind is routinely on the bowling alley, where he spends countless hours each week practicing. The staff at 3D has come to know him. Sometimes the general manager, Brad, will give him a couple free games.

Back in the bowling alley on the February afternoon, Baumgartner is feeling it again. He hits three consecutive strikes to close out the first game.

An older gentleman approaches his friend, Seth Lehman, and jokes, “You aren’t skipping school to bowl again are you?”

Seth smiles and says he isn’t.

Every Wednesday, Baumgartner and Lehman compete in a men’s league, along with some of their other buddies.

For a group that spends so much time in the alley, the team is fittingly named the Gutter Rats.

They’re in first place.

Jarrod Uthoff added 18 points and 12 rebounds for Iowa, and Adam Woodbury had 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Jalen Coleman-Lands led Illinois with 17 points, going 5 of 11 from 3-point range.

Jok’s dominant spell to open the second half was the difference in a game that Illinois had been finding a way to stay in.

ST. LOUIS – Harry Statham earned his record-breaking 1,099th victory as a head coach Saturday as freshman Nate Michael scored 40 points to lead McKendree to a 92-84 win over Maryville.

The 78-year-old Statham, who is in his 50th season coaching his alma mater, moved past legendary Tennessee women’s coach Pat Summitt for most wins ever by a coach at a four-year school. He has 476 losses.

“This win means more to me for all the players who have been in our program, and our current team. This program is all about them,” Statham said.

“For our players, the pressure was building with everyone asking them

when the next [win] would come.”

Michael had 22 points in the second half, and David Franklin had 14 of his 21 after halftime as the Bearcats (11-10, 4-9 Great Lakes Valley Conference) pulled away.

Michael Jackson had 12 of his 14 points in the second half and grabbed 10 rebounds.

“This was a big game for us in the conference, Harry Statham and to get this one out of the way, to get a big win and to see the pressure come off them means more than anything right now. I’m sure somewhere down the road I will look back at this and enjoy the moment. It was great to see all our fans travel to St. Louis, get

behind us and be part of this.”

Forrester Sims had 23 points and Marvin Grant-Clark 21 for the Saints (8-15, 2-11).

McKendree had tremendous success under Statham at the NAIA level, making 40 postseason appearances – including 10 in the national tournament during a 12-year span – ending in 2011.

Then the Bearcats moved up to Division II and have struggled.

The milestone win came on the Bearcats’ third try after losing the past two games.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Rickie Fowler hit two balls into the water on the par-4 17th hole to give Hideki Matsuyama an unexpected victory Sunday in the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

After blowing a two-shot lead on the 317-yard hole in regulation when he blasted a driver through the green and into the water, Fowler pulled a 5-wood into the lake on the fourth hole of a playoff to set up the deciding bogey. Matsuyama birdied the hole in regulation and two-putted for par from 6 feet in the playoff.

Fowler forced the playoff with a 10-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th after Matsuyama made an 18-footer. They each shot 4-under-par 67 to finish at 14-under 270.

Matsuyama won the 2014 Memorial for his only other PGA Tour title, beating Kevin Na on the first extra hole. The 23-year-old Japanese player tied for second last year at TPC Scottsdale, a stroke behind Brooks Koepka.

NBA reviewing if jump-on-back foul should be flagrant

NEW YORK – The NBA is reviewing whether the act of jumping on a player’s back to intentionally foul him should be interpreted as a flagrant foul.

Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens told reporters Sunday that a memo from the NBA said that act would now be ruled as a flagrant 1 foul. But a league spokesman said there has been no rule change, only that league officials are discussing how the play should be interpreted.

If it became a flagrant 1, the team that was fouled would keep possession after the two free throws.

SEATTLE – Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch might have given indication he’s retiring.

CHAMPAIGN – Just more than three minutes into the second half, Iowa’s Peter Jok stole the ball from Illinois guard Khalid Lewis and glided to the other end of the court for a two-handed dunk.

It was part of a 5-minute span after halftime in which the junior scored seven of the fifth-ranked Hawkeyes’ points, pushing their lead to 15 and delivering a blow the Illini wouldn’t recover from.

Jok finished with 23 points, and Iowa (19-4, 10-1 Big Ten) coasted to a 7765 victory.

Jok is playing with confidence, and doing that at both ends of the court, Hawkeyes coach Fran McCaffery said.

“I think you’re seeing a much more complete player,” McCaffery said.

“You’re watching a guy who, when he was young, made some mistakes. And he’s not doing that anymore.”

Jok said Iowa, whose only serious tests Sunday came in the game’s opening minutes and the handful of times the Illini would later cut the lead to single digits, has grown up as a team.

“It’s because of our experience,” Jok said. “When teams are coming back, we don’t rush anything. We know what we have to do to win.”

“Adam has really established himself as a premier rebounder in the country,” McCaffery said. “It makes such a difference to your defense when you only give them one shot.”
