How is it already fall!?

Don’t get me wrong — autumn is my favorite season, so I am in no way complaining about its arrival. But I can’t be the only one who feels like this year has flown by! Wasn’t it just yesterday that we were welcoming warmer weather and summer festivals?

This fall issue of Neighborhood Tourist has so much to offer, particularly in our outdoor activities and dining sections.

The first time I ever tried disc golf was early on in the pandemic. I’ve never been particularly adept at Frisbee throwing, so I was a bit skeptical the first time I set foot on a disc golf course. But, to my delight, disc golf is very doable — even for amateurs like me. I focus on the fun and the exercise aspects. Read more about this increasingly popular sport on P. 18.

Our destination dining section is … well, it’s mostly drinking this time.

Restaurants will have their day, but fall drinks are too fun and important to pass up! You’ll find features on creative coffee shops, wineries where you can enjoy a drink and beautiful scenery,

As we move from the time of tans and travels to the season of scarves and sweaters, I hope you find time to sit down and enjoy these pages.

Maybe you’ll find a spot on your porch, wrapped up in a blanket and learning about pumpkin patches near you (P. 12, if you’re interested). Or perhaps you’ll bake apple cider donuts and have two or three, fresh from the oven, while you read. However you find time, I hope you enjoy the stories and places you’ll find here.

f you have visions of jacko’-lanterns dancing in your head, it can only mean one thing: It’s time to pack up the family and make the drive to one of these awesome pumpkin farms.

Each location offers a different experience, from loads of activities to the simple opportunity to wander through a field, pulling your wagon of pumpkins. Make time to stop for the house specialties, like fresh pressed apple cider and warm donuts.

Be sure to check online before you head out. For some you’ll be able to purchase tickets in advance or even find discounts. And if your schedule allows, be sure to plan extra time to visit local businesses,

where you can indulge in a few more delicious bites at a cafe and make a day trip on a single tank of gas.

One of the larger pumpkin farms in the area, Bengtson’s boasts an array of attractions and activities, from rides to pig races. There’s even a small roller coaster and a haunted barn — really, there are attractions for all ages. A visit here can surely last a few hours … just don’t get so carried away with playing that you forget to grab a pumpkin.

Once checked in and ready to begin your outdoor adventure, head to one of the farms that offer fall activities all season long. Goebbert’s Farm in Pingree Grove offers a full day of family activities, including apple picking and feeding a pumpkin dinosaur! Next, we recommend adults stopping by Plank Road Tap Room. This award-winning tap room is located just outside urban Elgin and hosts one of the largest beer gardens in all of Chicagoland. Stop by to try a local brew and something tasty from the food

truck rotation. Also known for hosting bands and events, it’s a great place for adults looking to spend time in a comfortable, laid-back outdoor setting with amazing amenities and services. If you’re looking for a more family-friendly afternoon meal, we recommend visiting Old Republic Kitchen & Bar. This restaurant features a great outdoor dining experience and food to match.

After your meal, head over to one of the nearby forest preserves, like the Hampshire Forest Preserve or the Burnidge Forest Preserve. Here you can enjoy nature in a more peaceful and relaxing setting for activities like reading, drawing or meditation. These preserves also provide large fields for activities like Frisbee and playing catch.

¢ Day 2

To begin Day 2, enjoy the morning at Lords Park.

Here you can walk along the nature paths, visit the historic Lords Park Pavilion and see the bison at Lords Park Zoo. There is also Wing Park, home to the oldest municipal owned, nine-hole golf course!

The main activity for Day 2 is to enjoy the leaves

changing along the Fox River Trail. Running through South Elgin, Elgin, East Dundee, Carpentersville and beyond is 40 miles of trail. Enjoy the trail by bike; you can rent from Carpentersville’s Main Street Bicycles, located right off the trail. From there you can head south to East Dundee, where you’ll find some great spots to stop for lunch right off the trail.

Make your way to downtown Elgin, or even check out the brand-new Panton Mill Park in South Elgin.

¢ Day 3

First, check out of your hotel — now the day is yours to explore. Spend it doing a self-guided house tour of Elgin’s historic neighborhood districts or bird-watching at Jelke Creek Bird Sanctuary.

The sanctuary is dog-friendly, and deeper ponds are available for fishing. There’s also Bluff Spring Fen, where the spring water stays a constant 50 degrees, causing unique plants, endangered species and other unusual fauna to flourish. For an extra stop nearby, walk through historic Bluff City Cemetery to see intricate markers and mausoleums dating back to the 1800s.

Twain died 65 years before the first disc golf pole hole (or basket) was patented in the U.S. in 1975. Although there’s a debate on whether it was Twain’s quote in the first place, enthusiasts are still left to wonder whether he might have changed his tune about their beloved offshoot sport.

“It’s a physical activity that is demanding enough to help keep you in shape but also easy enough that anyone can do it,” says Kevin Derrick, part of the board of directors at Disc Golf Chicago, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding the sport.

“Young and old alike can enjoy the sport, and many families have started playing together as an inclusive activity they can all enjoy.

“And the courses are generally in gorgeous parks with an abundance of trees, forests, beautiful views and nature. It’s like going for a hike with some added fun and challenge.”

Naturally, the consensus among avid disc golfers is “What’s not to like?”

There are the elements, the exercise, the excitement of tracking a disc in flight. What there’s not, in most cases, is cost or the need to make reservations.

Derrick uses quotation marks because the object is not to toss the disc into a small pit in the ground, but rather a metal, chainlink basket.

“Starting on a tee pad for each hole, you throw a disc down the fairway towards the basket,” Derrick says. “Where that disc lands is your lie.” A player wants to complete each hole in the least number of throws.

As with conventional golf, there are pars, birdies (a score of one toss less than par), bogeys (a score of one toss more than par) and so forth. Hole lengths vary in distance but generally are far shorter than what you’d find on a golf course.

Discs typically cost around $15, Derrick says. While more experienced and championshiplevel players may tote 20 discs or more — each with different flights for varied shots and situations — it’s perfectly acceptable and no less enjoyable to bring but one.

“As long as you’ve got your own discs to throw, you can pull your car up and park and you’re off and playing for free,” says Don Ritter, deputy director of Woodridge Park District, which offers a nine-hole disc golf course at Castaldo Park. “So, I think that’s probably one of the biggest attractions is that it’s a free event that you can do on your own.”

Small groups also are common, but the nature of the sport lends itself to much less grousing or foot tapping than is typical amid gridlock on a golf course.

“Even if you do have to wait just a couple of minutes, once that first group throws their disc, it doesn’t take long for them to move down, go find their disc and make their second toss,” Ritter says. “And by that time, you know, the next group is ready to go. It’s a sport that can keep moving.

There’s not a lot of wait time and standing around."

FIND A COURSE NEAR YOU Disc golf courses abound in the counties that comprise the Neighborhood Tourist coverage area, including DeKalb, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, La Salle, Lee, McHenry and Will.

You may have driven past some of them and been aware of their function — or now are enlightened after reading about the advent of the sport.

At any rate, Kevin Derrick, part of the board of directors at Disc Golf Chicago, recommends searching the course directories at either www.discgolfcoursereview.com or www.udisc.com to find a venue near you. Players are able to filter based on the number of holes, player reviews and other attributes.

WITH AN EMPHASIS ON MENTAL HEALTH

A

t Goat Yoga Chicago, you’ll find five Mini Nubians and 13 Nigerian Dwarf goats with names you may recognize from the Chicago Cubs or popular TV shows.

There’s Maddux, Chandler, Rizzo, Thor and more, all living on a picturesque, stunning landscape.

While the goats are, well, conventional at a farm specializing in goat yoga, the focus on mental health is more unexpected.

“Everything that we do has to point back to mental health,” says Danielle Kerr, who owns the farm with her husband, Brad.

W

hat makes milk and cheese, eats grass and loves yoga?

If you guessed “goats,” you’re correct — and it’s a growing practice. Among other farms, Primrose Farm in St. Charles and Goat Yoga Chicago in Elgin can help make sharing your yoga mat with a goat a reality.

Merle and Norman, two Nigerian Dwarf goats (and twin brothers), want you to be a part of their next goat yoga class this fall at Primrose Farm. Typically held twice monthly on Saturday mornings from April through October, these outdoor yoga classes are designed to cater to all skill levels and ages — and make yoga inviting for everyone.

“It’s a lot of fun,” says Emily Lambillotte, farm program supervisor at Primrose Farm. “You’re coming to goat yoga to have a good time, potentially find something you really

enjoy doing, and just spend some time with some animals.”

While Primrose Farm has always had a variety of animals, the team had always wanted goats, and goat yoga seemed like the perfect excuse to add a few to the farm family.

“We just started with a few classes four years ago to gauge the interest and they sold out right away,” says Alison Jones, manager of farm programs and interpretive services. She notes they have since added private goat yoga classes as well as birthday groups, Girl Scout troops and a “billies and bubbles” brunch with the goats.

“The program brings in people from all over Kane County and even beyond,” Lambillotte says. “We get all kinds of different people, all ages, all across Illinois.”

Brad’s father died by suicide in 2015. Since then, the Kerr family has worked to address the stigma around mental health through goat yoga and open dialogue initiated by the yoga instructor. Goat Yoga Chicago has recently added 30-minute mindfulness classes to wrap up some classes, too, providing exercises and techniques to help participants after they leave the farm.

“The most wonderful thing about goats is that they love everybody,” says Kerr.

“They’re fully present” and accept you as you are, she says. Combining that connection with the grounded nature of yoga helps participants let go of stress and anxiety, she says.

That’s part of the draw of goat yoga — anyone can do it, no experience needed.

“For some people, it might be intimidating to go to a serious yoga class,” Jones says. “People at these classes do the poses, but a lot of the time they’re also hanging with the goats who are looking for attention. It’s relaxing in a different way.”

Lambillotte, who teaches the majority of the classes, says while the classes do include yoga, they really focus on breathing exercises and stretching and that no poses are particularly challenging.

In addition to several new baby Nigerian Dwarf goats that arrived this summer — Oatmeal, Sugar and Snickerdoodle — Primrose has added a twist for the animal aficionados out there: calves.

“They’re really friendly,” Lambillotte says, noting that as babies, they are small enough to meander around with the goats. “Sometimes

Primrose has calves every year in the spring and summer, so they always expect to have them around for spring and summer classes.

“I love how every single session is different,” Lambillotte says. “Every one is so different I never know what to expect. Sometimes they’ll be running in circles between people’s arms and under their bellies and doing crazy stuff.

It’s always fun to see how the goats decide to interact with the public for the day.”

Primrose likes to keep attendance around 10 people so everyone can enjoy one-onone time with the goats, but they can always stretch it to 15. “Everyone is always more focused on having a good time than having to focus on any super hard exercise poses or looking goofy,” Lambillotte says.

“Goats come first, yoga comes second.”

bottling facility, motor repair shop and a plethora of retail establishments before being left to nature several years ago.

Even in its overgrown, unkempt state, the structure’s 3-foot-thick limestone walls and original timbers spoke to Mike Baum. He visualized the greatness in the abandoned behemoth, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the best-preserved mills in the country.

“It’s a drop-dead gorgeous architectural marvel and right on the corner in Montgomery,” says Baum, who partnered

with Brian Dolan and Phil Cullen last fall to revive the neglected giant and turn it into a multifaceted project, including an event and wedding venue, beer garden and 1920s-themed speakeasy.

Incentives from the village encouraged the trio, “and we bought this sleeping beauty, and spent a considerable amount of money getting it in shape,” says Baum.

Its ribbon-cutting was in August. “The key is a loft over the river that turned into Baum’s Biergarten that’s absolutely stunning,” says Baum. “There’s a beautiful bend in the Fox River that’s

gorgeous. There’s no finer outdoor eating area anywhere in the valley.”

Tables are 5-inch-thick ash slabs from an old sawmill.

The bar is a gigantic maple timber cut in half, and other tables are made of packing crates from Frankfurt, Germany.

“We’re not on the Rhine, but we’re on the Fox, and it really has a European look to it,” says Baum.

The main floor houses Danny Boy’s Neighborhood Speakeasy, which, much like the iconic TV show “Cheers,” has become a gathering place for local

residents.

Two floors above are large open rooms for events and weddings. In the works is a huge addition for up to 300 off the third floor — an outdoor deck with retractable roof, overlooking the river, and a multipurpose area with bakery, pizza oven and rotisserie chickens.

And the fourth floor?

“The fourth floor is for our ghost,” says Baum.

Oh, yes, there’s a ghost.

“I don’t believe in ghosts, but there is a ghost,” he admits. “He’s a friendly ghost who turns on the

stereo system, and when we turn the lights out in that room we get in our cars and see the lights go back on.”

A diehard Bears fan, Baum is planning the ultimate tailgate party for all Chicago Bears games. “I was the first guy with a bus and went to every home game for years,” he says. The plan includes a tailgating buffet with stew, chili, ribs and bloody marys — and, of course, gigantic TVs outside.

When it comes to the food, “Everything is house-made,” says Cullen, who owns a number of other restaurants. “We have several burgers and great appetizers.” A big seller is the beef sandwich with lots of onions on a nice roll. So are the different breads, including a popular cheesestuffed roll that Cullen says is “out of this world.” Desserts include carrot cake and a waffle tower with ice cream, caramel and

chocolate. The pork belly fries, covered in pork belly and cheeses “is a killer,” says Cullen. Their biggest selling burger — the onion burger — is a half-pound Angus beef patty made to order, topped with grilled onions, on an onion roll and served with old-fashioned onion rings.

“We serve 12 specialty cocktails,” says Cullen. “One is our Old-Fashioned we smoke, which gives it a smoother flavor.

We follow strict recipes for all of our cocktails.” Cullen, with 18 years of bar experience, hand-picks the whiskey and other spirits.

“Sitting outside in the beer garden with music is totally transforming and magical,”

ocated just two minutes from the entrance of Starved Rock State Park and a short drive from Interstates 80 and 39, you’ll find a true hidden gem: the village of North Utica. This canal town, steeped in rich history and beautiful nature, features some of the best pub-style dining and boutique shopping offered in this part of Illinois. Now with the return of the signature Burgoo Festival on the horizon, there’s never been a better time to start planning a trip to picturesque Utica.

Over the past half-century, what started as a small community celebration of a

famed pioneer dish has grown into one of Illinois’ most celebrated fall festivals.

After taking a year off in light of public health concerns, Burgoo is back in 2021 for its 51st year. This multigenerational, all-ages event pairs together Midwestern hospitality, artists, artisans, antiques vendors, live entertainment — and, of course, larger than life cast-iron pots of Burgoo stew!

Utica’s Burgoo is now regularly attracting 40,000+ visitors to the two-day, open-air festival. Scheduled for Oct. 9 and 10, held rain or shine, you’ll find there is no shortage of fun activities slated for every age level and interest.

Inspired by harvest celebrations of the past, the star of the Burgoo Festival is...

Burgoo. This thick stew, the origin of which likely predates the Civil War, is a delicious hodgepodge of freshly harvested vegetables, local meats and flavorful herbs and spices.

Similar to other regional delicacies like Irish and Mulligan stews, this slow-cooked dish became a staple of fundraisers and benefit events in Midwestern and Southern states.

Burgoo is simmered in massive cast-iron pots over an open fire, stirred all day and night by diligent cooks. Seeing these hardworking volunteers, armed with nothing but wooden paddles the side of canoe oars, stir the legendarily thick stew is a true sight to behold and a delectable smell you won’t soon forget.

Burgoo will only be served on Sunday, Oct. 10, starting at 9 a.m. It’s served until it sells out, so plan your trip accordingly.

The fun doesn’t stop there, though. The festival also features a sprawling vendor show that rivals many of the state’s iconic outdoor artisan markets, in both quality and scope.

On Saturday, the La Salle County Historical Society’s Canal Market will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., featuring more than 100 curated vendors selling handmade, homegrown and vintage items. Sunday’s shopping event blooms to over 375 unique craft, gift and antique sellers, a can’t-miss vendor show that fills several open areas throughout the downtown, all conveniently within walking distance.

Burgoo 2021 will also have free live music, games, blacksmithing demonstrations and a classic car show. These family-friendly festivities and all other events taking place at Burgoo are sponsored by and benefiting the nonprofit La Salle County Historical Society and other society projects. This fantastic museum campus, located on the banks of the historic I & M Canal, consists of six locations: the canal warehouse, heritage center, a oneroom school house, a working blacksmith shop and an original barn dating back to 1875. While you’re in town for the festival, be sure to visit these spectacular historic and interpretive sites to see how Burgoo continues to benefit the preservation of local history.

peaking the word “wanderlust” multiple times during a recent conversation about coffee arguably suggests something about Luke Goucher’s love for the stuff.

That Goucher also utters the phrase “passion project” underscores his restaurant group’s commitment to bringing the same fervor for coffee to their neighbors. At Soul Loco in Maple Park, the goal is to appease everyone’s palate, from those seeking a basic cup of joe to something more adventurous, or even alcoholic.

Since this spring, Goucher has operated Soul Loco alongside Illinois Crafted restaurant group cohorts Dustin Zeitler, Brandon Harris, Gavin Male and Dane Male, who began their endeavor with Lodi Tap House in Maple Park. The quintet conceived of Soul

Loco around the time it hatched the plan for Obscurity Brewing & Craft Mead, which opened at 113 W. North St., Elburn, in July 2020.

“At the end of the day,” Goucher says, “I think we just wanted to build a place in town here that we could go to and enjoy that had delicious coffee, and saw kind of a need for that in the community and felt like there was an opportunity to not only do it, but do it real well where we roast our own stuff.”

Among those starring in both productions is Carson Souza, the Obscurity brewmaster who also roasted coffee during a previous career stop at Pig Minds Brewing in Machesney Park.

roasting and brewing processes — which overlap in a handful of steps, save fermentation, Goucher says — steered the formation of Soul Loco.

To that end, Soul Loco blends traditional hot and iced offerings such as brewed coffee, espresso, latte, macchiato, hot chocolate, iced coffee and iced tea while offering craft beer and wine and a number of notable cold brew creations.

The success of the usual fare and enticement of numerous summer favorites has helped build a customer base. One concoction, Cinnamon Toast Cold Brew, features an iced caramel cold brew topped with sweet cinnamon foam.

Another special, the Mai Chai, mixes coconut chai cold brew, vanilla cold foam and nutmeg, all topped with a mini umbrella.

Whether the base is coffee, beer or liquor, mixologists augment it with a spirit of experimentation, adding fresh, local, seasonal fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices.

“We actually take a lot of pride and a lot of time in all of our drinks and our creation behind those drinks,” says Nicole Bergner, Illinois Crafted general manager. “We have a really good group of people who work with Carson daily on flavor profiles for things, on pairings, to kind of create these unique drinks that you can’t find anywhere else.”

The name alone makes one salivate. “It’s our most requested drink at fairs and fests,” says co-founder and master distiller Keith Moore. The libation consists of organic lemonade, Black Dog’s own lavender vodka and a local honey syrup. Black Dog does vodka and rums exclusively. “We do clear spirits,” says Moore. “Because we distill with sugar cane we’re naturally gluten-free. You can come in and sample our products, have a cocktail.

If you like it, you can buy a bottle and take it home.” In 2017, USA Today ranked Black Dog as No. 4 out of the top 10 craft vodka distilleries in the country.

¢ KENNAY FARMS DISTILLING 416 Lincoln Highway, Rochelle 815-901-1512 www.kennayfarmsdistilling.com A historical building, the 1930s former Hub Theatre, houses family-owned Kennay Farms Distilling in downtown Rochelle. A tasting bar in the theater’s mezzanine area overlooks the production area located in the former movie section. “We have several wonderful cocktails,” says Doris Kennay, who co-owns the distillery with her husband, Rick.

The Cowsmoopolitan, an obvious spin on the true Cosmo, is a martini with Kennay’s vodka, cranberry juice and a little orange juice shaken and served in a martini glass. The Dee’s Donkey, named after a real-life donkey from the farm’s past, is a spin on the Moscow mule. “We use a lot of our grains in our products,” says Kennay.

“Our vodka is 100% corn that we grow. We mill it on our farm and bring it over to the distillery to make our spirits. Any byproduct is returned to the farm and fed to cattle.” ¢ RUSH CREEK DISTILLING 1501 W. Diggins St., Harvard 815-943-7874 www.rushcreekdistilling.com

Rush Creek Distilling in Harvard changes up its signature cocktail quarterly. “I try to do one cocktail per spirit that we have,” says Rush Creek’s Alyssa Stricker. One winter, the distillery offered a jalapeño-infused vodka, a barrel rested gin and a vanilla-infused vodka. “It’s all natural, unlike a lot of things you’d buy at the store with artificial flavorings and colorings.” Rush Creek has posted more than 40 recipes on its website for those who like crafting their cocktails from home.

Spirits in Peru. This artisanal, smallbatch distillery operates out of the former Westclox factory building. Star Union boasts two signature cocktails: a brandy Old-Fashioned and a Club Cocktail, which includes cherry brandy, house-made maraschino liqueur, pineapple juice, lime juice, a little ginger ale, lime and a Luxardo cherry.

“Our very exotic drink, called the Enchanted Garden, is cherry brandy, a muddled cucumber and jalapeño, jalapeño syrup, ginger syrup, pomegranate juice, lime juice and a little seltzer,” says co-founder Bob Windy. Cherry brandy is one of their top-selling spirits. ¢ WHISKEY ACRES 11504 Keslinger Road, DeKalb 844-494-4753 www.whiskeyacres.com Whiskey Acres is located on a thirdgeneration family farm in DeKalb: Walter Farms, which grows its own corn, wheat and rye. “We use the cream of the crop as grain to make bourbon whiskey, rye and some other things here,” says Nick Nagele, coowner. A 4,000-square-foot visitor’s center adjacent to the distillery welcomes thousands of visitors a year to hang out in front of the fireplace, look out the windows and see the farm, says Nagele. In warmer weather, visitors can play lawn games outside.

Whiskey Advocate magazine named Whiskey Acres one of the top six visionaries in whiskey making in 2018.

“It’s a stone’s throw from planting to bottling and everything in between.

That’s very unique and specific to Illinois and the industry in general,” says Nagele.

Whiskey Acres is famous for its Bourbon Slush, an entry-level cocktail for those a little apprehensive about bourbon and whiskey. It’s made with bourbon, black tea, lemonade, orange juice and a splash of ginger ale. There’s also a bourbon aficionado’s cocktail in the form of an Old-Fashioned. “We infuse our simple syrup with barrel char from our whiskey barrels, and make this wonderful, smoky, complex OldFashioned,” says Nagele.
