MENDOTA Mendota prides its community’s hospitality as a reason why so many people from the surrounding area enjoy their annual events. One of those events, the Mendota Sweet Corn Festival, attracts thousands each August.

The annual event features a parade, carnival, beer garden, free sweet corn cooked in a vintage steam engine and other events.

Aside from community events, residents can enjoy the city’s two man-made lakes, Lake Mendota and Lake Kakusha, for boating and fishing. Mendota’s Amtrak station, with trains making daily stops, allows residents to travel with ease.

held annually in October. Over a wood-burning fire, the traditional pioneer dish is cooked between 12 and 18 hours. Burgoo is one of the longest-running and largest fall festivals in northern Illinois, established as a means to support La Salle County Historical Society.

PRINCETON Professional theatre actors from around the country migrate to Princeton to live and perform during their summer season. Festival 56 presents a wide selection of memorable plays and musicals. We are also home to two covered bridges; the youngest and oldest in the state. The oldest is the Red Covered Bridge, built in 1863, and it is still in use today. The Bureau County Historical Museum and Research Library, located on the court house square, is a treasure trove of artifact collections from around Bureau County and the state. It is home to the historic H.W Immke Photography Collection, some 20,000 glass

plate negatives and photographs taken between the years 1866 and 1923. Also preserved is photographic equipment owned and used by Mr. Immke. This collection has been noted by the Smithsonian Institute as a rare and fine photographic chronicle of early American settlers over such a long period of time.
