Welcome to NIU Welcome, NIU Huskies!

Fall is a new beginning for us all, and one that will be filled with many opportunities to connect, create and build community. Huskies are ready to take to the classroom, lab, field, stage and more to not only learn, grow and use their skills, but to help improve our region, state, nation, and the world for generations to come. Here at NIU, you are joining a diverse group of learners and doers who share your dreams for a better future. We all come from different places, but we are a united community committed to ensuring that everyone belongs, everyone is seen and everyone is valued. Our friends and partners here in the DeKalb/Sycamore community are looking forward to welcoming you, as a customer, an employee or maybe even a volunteer. Everyone around you at NIU is here to support your success. We want you to do well in your classes, meet new people and gain new perspectives, and of course to have a little fun too. As you become familiar with your new surroundings, please be sure to explore widely, around campus and beyond. And don’t hesitate to reach out – for directions, advice, support, or just a friendly conversation. NIU’s excellence comes from our amazing students, staff and faculty who care deeply for one another as we pursue and share knowledge for society’s benefit. Together, we are unstoppable. We are Huskies and Huskies never quit. Have a wonderful year!

LISA C. FREEMAN President Northern Illinois University

Welcome to DeKalb On behalf of everyone in DeKalb, I cannot express enough how excited we are to have students and faculty back to our community in person this year. We missed you all! NIU and the city of DeKalb are both close to my heart. I grew up in DeKalb and I am also an NIU Alumnus. Throughout my life, I have spent a lot of time and energy working with the city and NIU on a number of projects benefiting both communities. I tell you this because, as Mayor, I am doing everything I can to make sure that NIU and the city work closely together to provide a wonderful community for our residents to live in and a welcoming community for our students to attend school. You will find in DeKalb an incredible variety of restaurants providing food from cultures around the globe. You will discover unique cultural experiences when attending places like the historic Egyptian Theatre and our Stage Coach Player’s Theatre. You will have access to all the major brands for your day-to-day needs, and you will be able to attend local festivals like the DeKalb Corn Festival and Music at the Mansion. I encourage you to spend some time to get to know us. You will find a community that welcomes new ideas, embraces innovation, and a community that is working hard to co-create an environment where everyone feels like they belong. Are we perfect? We are not. Are we growing and expanding our understanding and compassion of each other? Yes, we are. That is why I used the word co-create. For it will take all of us, working together in our local communities, to continue to improve this great nation of ours. Forward, together forward.

COHEN BARNES, CLASS OF ’95 Mayor, City of DeKalb

We all

Belong

We are excited to welcome you to Northern Illinois University (NIU) and the City of DeKalb! As you get to know campus and community life, we want you to know we are happy to have you join us and you belong here.

DeKalb and NIU have engaged in meaningful efforts to create a culture of belonging on our campus and in the community. This has been an authentic partnership that began in January of 2020. Our belonging efforts started with honest conversation that recognized the realities of othering and the importance of belonging right here in DeKalb and at NIU. Nearly 500 students, staff, faculty, and DeKalb residents participated in the conversations last year. Since then, we have hit the ground running with several impactful efforts.

This is an exciting and important time to be at NIU! We recently formalized a Belonging Council (pictured on the front cover) that is committed to creating a community where you feel seen, valued, and a part of our Huskie family. Our belonging efforts also include addressing necessary policy changes, providing inclusion in decision making, and ensuring equity in access. We support events that bring us together and help us get to know one another. We have also created art exhibits that celebrate our diversity and acknowledges the painful realities of othering. Find out about these exhibits and other events at www.dekalb/belong.com. We want you to be part of our belonging efforts because your voice matters. This fall, DeKalb and NIU will partner to host Faces and Voices of Belonging pop-up events on campus and in the community. We will have a mobile sound studio and photographers on site to capture your experiences and photos. Look for us on campus at the Presidents Picnic Aug. 22 at the lagoon, the Campus Meets Community Block Party on Sept. 9 in the MLK Commons, or at the NIU Unity Walk on Sept. 21 in the MLK Commons. We invite you to learn more about our belonging community and get involved www.dekalb/belong.com. We need your voice and engagement.

Sincerely, VERNESE E. EDGHILL-WALDEN, PH.D. Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer Belonging Co-Chair Northern Illinois University BILL NICKLAS, PH.D. DeKalb City Manger Belonging Council Co-Chair City of DeKalb

TOP 10 NIU Campus Experiences from Huskie Alumni

We at the NIU Alumni Association—a community of friends and alumni of NIU—are excited for you to begin your journey at this incredible university. While you are here, you will undoubtedly have many opportunities that will shape your college experience. Here are a few traditions that our alumni community suggests you cannot miss! To get the most out of your time on campus, here are the Definitive Top 10 NIU Campus Experiences from Huskie Alumni.

10.

Check out the original school seal at Altgeld Hall, but be careful and don’t step on it. If you do, legend says you won’t graduate! On your way there, check out the many gargoyles, grotesques and griffins, including Olive Goyle. Fun fact: Olive Goyle has been struck by lightning twice and has a long tradition with NIU.

9.

Have a picnic next to the sculpture by Alexander Calder near Lowden Hall. Calder was arguably America’s foremost sculptor, and one of the bestknown artists in the world in the 1960s.

8.

Enjoy the fun and festivities that come with Homecoming, which is a time for us to cheer on our football team while graduates and friends of the university come back to reminisce.

7.

Visit the Peaceful Reflection Garden next to Cole Hall to honor Huskies’ resilience, our joint history and our motto “Forward, Together Forward.”

6.

Enjoy a bonfire or ice skating at the East Lagoon. This is a custom that students have enjoyed on campus for many decades, and it allows a beautiful, natural respite from the stresses of classwork.

5.

Be sure to check out our athletic teams and arts performances to fully enjoy the experiences NIU has to offer. From “big” games and intramural teams to art exhibits, concerts and plays, there is something to see all year round!

4.

Meet new people and make lifelong friends by joining a fraternity, sorority or other student organization. Explore leadership roles and find out about your strengths, so you can take that knowledge to your first job.

3.

Count the stars at the Davis Hall Observatory, which is free to the public on select evenings. Nothing beats a dark DeKalb night with friends under the heavens.

2.

Invite your family to stay at the university’s own hotel—Hotel at Holmes—which is located in the Holmes Student Center on the Quad. And, drum roll, please… The No. 1 Definitive NIU Campus Experience:

1.

Learn to live harmoniously with the geese on campus. They think they own the place, and we’re not quite sure that they don’t! Just be careful, and don’t get too close!

This includes disinfecting commonly touched surfaces throughout the entire vehicle for the safety of the passengers and the bus operator. • All passengers riding the DeKalb Public Transit System are required to wear a face covering until Sept. 13, 2021, per federal mandate.
