Matthew and Gunnar Nelson continue to make their mark on the family name
Music is their heritage

Ever since Matthew and Gunnar Nelson, of the American rock band Nelson, were old enough to pick up a pair of acoustic guitars and concoct songs, the two continued what has seemingly become a family tradition: making and performing music. The twin brothers descend from a long line of musicians and performers Gunnar says “pushed the limits in their field” at the time. History holds true for the Nelson brothers’ grandparents Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, of the eponymous ’50s and ’60s sitcom, and father Ricky Nelson, a reputable singer and actor who sold more than 2 million singles. When Nelson performs “An Evening with the Nelsons” during Newton Fest June 8 at the Maytag Bowl in Maytag Park, Matthew and Gunnar will honor their family ties by playing some their loved ones’ hit songs, in addition to the brothers’ catalog of rock tunes. “Very rarely do we blend those two worlds,” Gunnar says during a phone interview with the Newton Daily News. Nevertheless, he is proud to
revisit his family’s work and contributions to the music world and turn it into a “family retrospective” show. “We have this unique situation where we truly are the only family that’s had three generations of No. 1 hit makers, according to the Guinness Book (of World Records), and we thought we’d be remiss if we didn’t occasionally go out and do an ‘evening with’ show like this is and kind of talk about all that,” Gunnar says. Like talking about what it was like for Ozzie Nelson back in his day when everyone had a big band ensemble, which was how he met his future wife Harriet Hilliard (born Peggy Lou Snyder in Des Moines, no less). Or how that “big band thing” turned into a radio and TV show called “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet.” Or how Ricky Nelson became the first teen musician to pioneer the use of television to market and promote the emerging rock ’n’ roll music. Gunnar remembers watching his father, who was entering the second phase in his music career with the country-inspired Stone Canyon
Band, practice “just down the hallway” with famed pedal steel guitarist Tom Brumley. Inspiration certainly wasn’t hard to find for both Matthew and Gunnar. “We started learning and we started writing from the time we were really young,” Gunnar says. So when Nelson eventually debuted, because of the brothers’ influences growing up in Southern California — Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Canyon Band — the band “sounded really different from Guns N’ Roses.” Nelson, he says, was far more “pop folky” than the “hardcore blues act” bands that were touring at the time. More Beach Boys than The Rolling Stones, Nelson found success with hits like “(Can’t Live Without Your) Love and Affection” but the sound certainly clashed with competing groups. Gunnar says he and his brother were fine with that. The two were able to be “lucky enough to make their own mark on the family” name and sold millions of records. As shown by the group’s continued touring success, Nelson is not through yet. Not by a long shot, Gunnar says. The Nelson twins are working on a new project called Firstborn Sons. Also country inspired, the band mirrors the ac-
tions of Rick Nelson’s career crossover from rock ’n’ roll to country music. That means even more performing. Which is find by them. “Every single weekend — Friday, Saturday and Sunday — Matthew and I are out there doing what we love to do more than anything, which is bringing the music to the people and connecting and performing,” Gunnar says. “And, man, this thing in the bowl is going to be awesome. Price said the chamber is happy to host the Cool Car Show during Newton Fest to bring the community entertainment to enjoy. New location for Safety Fest 2019 izens and show what they do in the line of duty. Fire trucks, ambulances and the fire house will be on display for the NFD while the NPD will have a police car, SWAT vehicle and motorcycle out for the public to see. Both departments will also have handouts for kids. “Safety Fest is really an opportunity for both departments to connect with children and let them sit in and climb on some of the vehicles we use and allows officers, firefighters and paramedics to answer questions that adults might have,” Wing said. (It is a chance to) just engage with the public in a low stress environment.” If kids want an opportunity to meet local law enforcement, sit behind the wheel of a fire truck, try on the department’s gear and get their picture taken with those protecting the city, Safety Fest is a fun, free chance during the community celebration.

change in location is in store for Safety Fest, the Newton Fire Department and Police Department event during Newton Fest. Instead of in the parking lot at in front of the department’s building, Safety Fest will be located in the east most parking lot of the Newton DMACC campus. “In years past, we have had good turnouts but we have always been located in front of the police department and fire department, which means people have to move from one location to another to enjoy all the activities that Newton Fest has to offer,” Sergeant Chris Wing said. “We have changed the location this year to be closer to the DMACC green space where there will be a lot of fun activities for kids. By moving the location we are hoping to make it easier on families to enjoy all the events.” From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 8, firefighters and police officers will be on hand to talk with cit-

Kyle Johnson, Sean McDermott and Jake Springer all love to barbecue, to compete, and to support their community. So it was an easy leap from cooking to starting a nonprofit aimed at raising funds to help others through barbecue competition. The three men — known competitively as T-Rex BBQ — decided to step in and organize the Newton Fest BBQ after learning the contest was going to cease for 2019. The group had first competed at Newton Fest and wanted to see the tradition continue. “We raise our families here,” the men said in a statement. “This is our community and we see so many ways that we can use barbecue to help others in it.” For the inaugural year, Q 4 Causes has adopted Jasper County Animal Rescue League as their cause of choice. “This year we chose JCARL as our first beneficiary as we are all animal lovers and owners,” McDermott said. “JCARL can always use food items and cleaning supplies, and we are looking forward to helping them stock their shelves and helping them show case what they do and who they are.” For the first contest, Q 4 Causes has opened up the event to 10 teams. The teams will compete in three different meat categories — chicken wings, ribs and pork butt cooked competition
style. Those wanting to taste test the food can do so for a $5 donation to JCARL or a minimum 5 pounds of pet food, non-clumping litter or cleaning supplies. While teams are cooking, JCARL staff and volunteers also will be hosting a bags tournament and have adoptable dogs and cats there for potential owners to
meet, adopt and take home. “It’s important to support local nonprofits through BBQ because it’s a good way to get the community involved, come to support a great cause and eat great food,” Johnson said. The members of T-Rex BBQ said the community has rallied behind them as they work to host their first event. The team said the support of the event sponsors — Greg Young Auto Center of Newton, Farver True Value, Moo’s BBQ Burgers and
Catering, Lynnville’s Smokin’ J’s BBQ, Dave’s Wholesale, WSM Industries, Heartland Co Op, State Farm-Lonnie Portner and Newton Fest committee — have made the event possible. “I was raised in this community on the principle of it takes a village to raise a child,” McDermott said of the generosity the team has seen during planning. “We as a community have to take care of each other.” The contest begins June 7 at DMACC Newton Campus southwest parking lot. Teams can check in at 5 p.m. and a cooks meeting will take place at 8 p.m. A special cooking class will begin at 6 p.m. for the public to attend. The free cooking class will give pointers on cooking competition style ribs. As competition heats up June 8, Discover Hope 517 will be selling raffle tickets from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the contest. The JCARL Double Elimination Bags Tournament will kick off at 10 a.m. At 10:30 a.m. judging will take place with celebrity judges. Those attending the event can enjoy the music of Nate Butler from noon to 4 p.m. And those wanting to taste some delectable dishes can do so during BBQ sampling from 1 to 3 p.m. At 3 p.m. officials with Q 4 Causes will award prizes to the best ribs, pork butt and chicken wings. “We are looking forward to continuing an amazing event for our community that they will look forward to each year,” Johnson said.

When Newton Fest began there were a handful of activities featuring live music, food and children’s activities. As Newton Fest nears its fifth anniversary, more than 30 events are scheduled for the annual festival celebrating all things Newton. “While Newton Fest will offer many returning favorites, the committee has worked hard to generate new attractions to help keep things fresh,” said Danielle Rogers, co-chair of Newton Fest. “I really believe the committee and our partnering organizations have outdone themselves for 2019.” The Great Outdoors The Jasper County Conservation Board has joined the roster of organizations who are helping grow the annual celebration. JCCB will be offering people the opportunity to learn more about Jasper County wildlife and to test their archery skills. Jasper County Conservation naturalists Katie Cantu and Greg Oldsen will have an archery range from 10 a.m. to noon June 7 at Maytag Park. Children 8 and older and adults are encouraged to try something new or come to practice their skills. The event is free. “One of Jasper County Conservation’s main goals is providing family-friendly programming and recreation opportunities. We are excited to be a part of this Newton-wide celebration showcasing just that. There are so many great things this community has to offer,” Cantu said. Let’s Go To The YMCA The Newton YMCA will be offering a chance to check out the Y during a special community open house from noon to 9 p.m. June 7. Visitors can swim, walk on the track, use the fitness equipment, shoot some hoops and enjoy all the amenities offered by the Y for free. The YMCA also will be helping folks get their sweat on with a free group fitness class from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. June 8 at H.A. Lynn Stadium. The boot-camp style class will have participants working on the bleachers, track and field. The class is free for all. ACTIVITIES • 8

Free Family Fun Thanks to sponsors the Newton Fest committee is hosting several new activities for families to enjoy during the weekend. The committee has focused on offering a variety of events allowing all ages to find a way to take part in the fun. Among the new events added for 2019 is the first ever Newton Fest Pool Party for free during the threeday event. Children and adults can take a dip in the Maytag Pool from 7 to 10 p.m. June 7. Children and adults can check out the Newton Fest fun zone on the Legacy Commons at DMACC Newton Campus. The bounce houses, obstacle courses and a laser tag course will be open to all for free from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 8. Recording artists Matthew and Gunnar Nelson will be performing
“An Evening With the Nelsons� at 7 p.m. June 8 at Maytag Park. The show will feature music from both the twins’ career and that of their father, Ricky Nelson. The concert will take place at the historic Maytag Bowl and is free and open to all ages. Those attending are encouraged to bring a blanket or chairs to sit on. Food vendors will be on hand selling street tacos, ice cream, drinks and other foods. “Something I’m very proud of is that the majority of the events taking place during Newton Fest are absolutely free,� Rogers said. “We want to ensure everyone, regardless of income, can take part in celebrating as a community.� Fun On The Farm The Jasper County Farm Bureau Federation has organized the first ever Ag Fest to offer educational opportunities about the agricultural industry. Beginning at 11 a.m. June 8, a vari-

ety of free, hands-on activities will be offered including a small petting zoo hosted by the Newton FFA, tractors on display from Van Wall Equipment and more. A highlight will be the Kiddie Pedal Tractor Pull. The contest is open to children 4-11 years old. Trophies will be awarded for first and second place. Registration is at 1 p.m. and the contest begins at 1:30 p.m. All the Ag Fest activities will be in the west parking lot of DMACC. All activities are free and open to all ages. There’s Always Room for Dessert Calling all bakers! Newton Main Street is hosting its inaugural Baking Contest on June 8 at the Innovation Center at Legacy Plaza. “We are excited to host the baking contest,� Graham Sullivan, Newton Main Street Executive Director said. “Who doesn’t love baked goods? And what’s more American than Main Street and apple pie?� The contest is open to all ages. Children 17 and younger can enter

the Kid Cookies, Brownies or Dessert Bar category. Adults will compete in three categories including cookies, pies and dessert bars. She hopes the new activities planned will only add to people’s enjoyment of Newton Fest weekend. “The Munsters” theme song is iconic, the sets are unforgettable, the characters are timeless, the cars are clutch and now the monstrously popular TV show will be part of Newton Fest 2019. Butch Patrick, who starred as Eddie Munster for two seasons, will be making a stop in Newton on June 8. Patrick, along with his wife Leila, will be on hand to showcase their “Munster Koach” and “Dragula” tribute cars, meet and chat with fans and sign autographs. “The ‘60s in general was a great time in comedy for TV, and ‘The Munsters’ were in the center of all of that,” said Patrick during a phone interview from an appearance in Nashville, Tenn. “It was a really unusual, one-of-a-kind show that incorporated really great comedy and with special effects and visuals with the house; and we had really great guest stars. So between the comedy, the cars, the music and the guest stars it is just a beloved show 55 years later.” The show, which aired on CBS from 1964 to 1966, followed the wholesome life of a family of monsters featuring Herman Munster, the head of house-
hold, and Frankenstein’s monster played by Fred Gwynne, his vampire wife Lily played by Yvonne DeCarlo, and their son Eddie played by 11-yearold Patrick. The family tree was rounded out by the kooky vampire Grandpa played by Al Lewis and their beautiful niece Marilyn Munster played by both Beverly Owens and Pat Priest. The family’s creepy home at 1313 Mockingbird Lane and the family’s cars helped add ambiance and carry through the monster genre of the show. The original cars were built by the “King of Kustomizers” George Barris who also made the original 1966 Batmobile, the General Lee, KITT and the car in “The Beverly Hillbillies.” “(My favorite is) The Munster Koach,” Patrick said. “The Dragula is a single seater and it’s fast, and loud and cool; but The Munster Koach is the one everybody recognizes and loves.” While Patrick had traveled to many comic conventions and made a number of appearances since the 1980s, purchasing the car replicas four years ago has allowed him the opportunity to attend more events and meet more fans in the lower 48 states. “I’m a gearhead and belong to a car club so what the cars do is allow me to do a whole lot more than just go to an autograph show with a briefcase of 8x10s,” Patrick said. “We have the two cars and the trailer, and people can experience part of the show by seeing the cars.” Patrick said while he is most often recognized as Eddie Munster he had many roles in TV beginning in 1961, and during appearances fans love to share their memories and learn more about his work. “It’s kind of a feel good situation because all you do is get smiling faces coming to the table who want to meet you and pose for photos because
you’ve been a big part of their life in a positive way,” the actor said. Along with “The Munsters,” other iconic TV shows Patrick was on include “I Dream of Jeannie,” “Gunsmoke,” “Mister Ed,” “Rawhide,” “Bonanza,” “My Favorite Martian,” “The Monkees” and “Daniel Boone.” His favorite was being on “The Monkees.” “Number one favorite thing outside of Munsters was ‘The Monkees’ Christmas show,” he said. “I was lucky enough to work on that show when I was 14. And they were huge, maybe, even bigger than The Beatles because they had a TV show in America. So that was just really great.” Patrick said at first he avoided the notoriety that came with the TV show but has since embraced his TV legacy. He said he is proud to be part of a show that is family-friendly and has been a perennial favorite for generations through syndication, DVDs and streaming. “There are not a lot of shows that
can keep three generations focused on the television set,” Patrick said. “So you have grandparents, their kids and grandkids all watching the same thing and they can watch together; and to me that is a great thing.” Patrick will be making a guest appearance at the Newton Chamber Cool Car Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 8, at DMACC Newton Campus parking lot. His appearance, sponsored by Newton Fest committee and its supporters, will include the Munster Koach and Dragula on display, the opportunity to chat with Patrick, get photos of the star and his cars, and purchase autographs. “I look forward to these appearances and meeting fans,” Patrick said. “It is very easy to do when you have people coming up to meet you and share positive parts of their lives and you are part of their upbringing even though you didn’t know them but they knew you. It is just a really positive, great thing.”

301 Studios brings Local Music Showcase back to Newton Fest

ewton natives Brandon Cook and Nick Maggard of 301 Studios will be bringing a lineup of musicians for Newton Fest’s Local Music Showcase for the third straight year. Musicians will be playing in the courtyard area in the Legacy Plaza, near the Cellar Peanut Pub. Five artists will be featured throughout the day beginning at 10 a.m. June 8.
“Showcase will be a real good time. The artists are going to be quite diverse and that will add quite a fun afternoon to not hear the same thing all the time. We have a great venue,” Maggard said.
Jason Kincel featuring Christian Formaro and Trevor Hamilton 10 a.m. to noon Pella musician Jason Kincel will bring a variety of country music from the 1990s to today. He will also be featuring several original songs during his set. This will be his first time playing in Newton, and he is looking forward to the debut. “I’m looking forward to playing Newton Fest because it’s an outdoor venue. I have not played in Newton yet, and I love seeing new faces and being able to play for new people,” Kincel said. Kincel said he has been singing his whole life and has always wanted to be a musician. He said seeing the Granger Smith concert a few years ago is what lit the spark for him to finally pursue his dream. “(Smith)
gave an inspirational speech to the audience about never giving up on their dreams, and I’ve been playing music ever since,” Kincel said.
Luke Farland Noon to 2 p.m. Country artist Luke Farland will bring his style of traditional and modern country to Newton Fest. He will cover music ranging from Hank Williams to Luke Combs. Farland also like to mix in some classic rock to his set from bands like the Eagles and CCR. But he doesn’t like to run off an official set list, so bring your requests, and he will play what people want to hear. This will be his second stint at Newton Fest. “I played last year and I have a good relation with those boys over at 301. They’ve help record a song or two for me,” Farland Said. The Newton native now lives in Nevada and is pursuing his career in music. He travels all over the state of Iowa playing gigs on a daily basis. He said those who attend his set can look forward to “downhome, small-town country music.” Nick Maggard 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
301 Studios’ own Nick Maggard will perform his acoustic freestyle set for the Newton Fest goers. He plans to cover a wide range of genres to give a little something different for people to hear. “I didn’t even expect to get up there but we need to fill some time,” Maggard said. Maggard finds inspiration from several different artists who have influenced his musical stylings. He said listening to Jason Maraz got him into playing guitar without a pick. He cites other artists like Jack Johnson and Incubus to draw on for inspiration. Mostly he hopes to have a nice Saturday afternoon enjoying music with a group of people. “Hopefully the weather is good. There isn’t much more fun to do on a Saturday afternoon than to hang out in the good weather and listen to music. That’s the joy,” Maggard said.
Callaghan and Company 3 to 4 p.m. This young group will bring the sound of the 60s, 70s and 80s rock to Newton Fest. Lead man Jack Callaghan said what he is most excited about is showcasing the original songs they have written. “I’m looking forward to playing my original music and seeing the audience reaction to it,” he said. Callaghan grew up in Texas but has lived in Newton for the past five years. He has been playing music for the past several years and he draws most of his inspiration from his uncle. Young Drew 4 p.m. to close Rounding out the showcase is Young Drew who will bring good clean hip hop and rap to Newton Fest. Newton native Drew
Thurman looks forward to playing in his hometown. “I look forward to playing at home where all my family friends and the hometown can be apart of the music I’ve been making,” Thurman said. Young Drew has been on the state’s music scene for more than a decade. Throughout the years he has opened for major hip hop/rap acts throughout the country. He makes a point to represent clean music that tells a story through quality contest. So parents should feel free to bring the kids along to enjoy. Young Drew is thankful for the support he has received in Newton. His new Album “Outta The Grave” just released in May so he hope to give Newton a show to remember. There’s much to be proud of in Newton, and the continuing success of Newton High School is one of the most enduring. The Newton High School Alumni Association knows this well and has been promoting the tradition of what’s now called Red Pride since 1882, having been founded by early graduates with Emerson Hough as the first president. One of our greatest responsibilities is to organize and promote Alumni Weekend, but that’s far from all the NHS Alumni Association does to promote Red Pride: • We write and publish the 24page magazine ALUMNI NEWS twice per year, completely devoted to the activities and accomplishments of current and future Newton alumni • We provide scholarships to graduating NHS seniors who are the son or daughter of Newton alumni • We organize and sponsor the All-Classes Open House and Reunion, the annual All-Classes Brunch and Social at Newton High School, and host the Newton High School Hall of Fame Our magazine, scholarship pro-

Jack Chadwick
(retired NHS educator) Jack Chadwick taught U.S. history and in the at risk program at NHS, and served as a guidance counselor. He was boys golf coach for 30 years and was assistant coach for both boys and girls basketball. Jack led the Cardinal golf team to two state championships, coached two individual state champion golfers and was nominated twice for National Golf Coach of the Year.

Herman Deaton (1946)
Herman Deaton is a nationally-recognized sculptor. Collections of his wildlife sculptures have been used by the Hamilton Mint and the National Wildlife Federation, and featured on magazine covers. His service to the City of Newton includes the NCSD School Board, the Jasper County Museum, Project Awake and the Centre for Arts and Artists.
Greg Thielmann (1968) Greg Thielmann served more than three decades in the executive and legislative branches of the federal government, specializing in political-military and intelligence issues. He was a foreign service officer for 25 years and served as senior professional staffer of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. Greg currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Arms Control Association.

Karen Paschal (1968)
Dr. Paschal established the first doctoral-level physical therapy program in the United States at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. While a physical therapist, she provided physical therapy services in clinical settings in three states and was on the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh. She still serves as a professor at Creighton University.
