Newton Fest has music schedule that won’t quit

By Samuel Nusbaum Newton Daily News Newton Fest is bringing music to the masses again this year with two acts that are sure to get the crowd moving.

This year’s headliner is the country band Big Time Grain Company, which is fronted by the brother duo Chad and Bret Bourquin.​ Chad said the group enjoys performing at festivals like Newton Fest. The brothers grew up in smalltown America, and Chad said there is something special about the warm receptions and the hospitality they receive on the small-town stage.

He contrasted the experience to performing in the city, where there are

more entertainment options than in rural Iowa, where those options are limited and a band coming through is a big deal.

Bourquin said the group’s message or feeling, fans say, is in Big Time Grain Company’s feel good music.

“We hear that people will say, ‘I just feel better after coming to one of your shows,’” Bourquin said. “In fact, we have got some fans, a bunch of them, that come just for that reason.”

Big Time Grain Company performs in big cities and small towns and Bourquin said the band has just signed with a booking agency which focuses on the college and military markets. He said the band is also getting

ready to put one of their songs on the radio.

The band is currently unsigned to a label and they plan to stay that way for a while.

“We have built this to be able to sustain it ourselves and go as far as we can ourselves, and we are going to entertain every deal which shows up and there seems to be more and more of those opportunities that shows up,” Bourquin said.

He said while they are always writing, the next big project is a Christmas album with covers and a couple of original songs.

who performed during the beginning of rock and roll when Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, The Beatles and Johnny Cash ruled the airwaves.

Band member Josh Adams said he got into this kind of music by flipping through records at a record store and he found them enticing. He showed them to his roommate, who would later become the drummer for the band. Adams said learn-

ing songs from that era was not hard.

“A lot of those songs share a lot of similarities as far as the way they are structured,” Adams said.

“It is really easy once you get started, to keep plowing through all the songs from back then.”

He said part of the fun of playing festivals is getting new fans who otherwise would have never heard about them. The music attracts people and

they become hooked.

The night of music will be Saturday with Dirty Rotten Scoundrels performing from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. and Big Time Grain Company performing from 8 to 10 p.m. Both acts will be at the DMACC/ Baker Group Stage in L ​ egacy Plaza/Maytag Event Complex Courtyard.

‘Nearly Elvis’ ‘Hunk of burnin’ love’ returns to Newton Fest

By Mike Mendenhall Newton Daily News Ron Semler does not claim to be Elvis Presley, but the singer is “Nearly Elvis.”

Semler, a southeast Iowa native, has been doing his Elvis impersonation on stage for 19 years, and when he returns to Newton Fest this year for an 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. performance Saturday, he’ll be singing tunes like “An American Trilogy” and “The Wonder of You” solely for the fans.

“My favorite thing is seeing the audience reaction, making people

happy and keeping their love of his music alive,” Semler said. “Some people sing along, but a lot of people just want to hear it or relive it.”

Semler is set to perform a free show, sponsored by the City of Newton, at the DMACC Newton Campus Greenspace. It’s a return to Newton Fest for the 60-year-old King, first performing his Elvis covers at the festival in 2015.

Up, up and away! Newton Fest attendees get a bird’s eye view of town

By David Dolmage Newton Daily News Newton Fest attendees will get another chance to fly the friendly skies of Newton this weekend.

Johnson Aviation will be offering plane rides Saturday. After raising more than $2,000 offering rides during last years event, manager Ethan Nasalroad said his staff is excited to be back for a second year. The airport will donate the money raised during the event to Newton’s Rotary club.

“What a great way to see Newton — from the air,” Nasalroad said. “In the spirit of Newton Fest we wanted to offer some new and inexpensive things for families to do.”

The rides, which are $15 for adults and $10 for chil-

dren 12 and under, last about 15 minutes in length. Nasalroad said riders will get a chance to make a loop above the Nasalroad town, passing oversights like the TPI factory, Newton’s DMACC campus and the west side of the city before heading back to the airport.

In order to meet the anticipated demand, Nasalroad said the airport plans to have at least three airplanes running for rides. The Piper Warriors that flight instructors at the airport use will seat a total of four, including the pilot, so Nasalroad suggested folks who are interest-

ed make it out to the airport early.

“We started at 7:30 a.m. last year, and we quit selling tickets at 4 (p.m.), but the line was so long we were still taking people up until 5:30 (p.m.),” Nasalroad said.

Even for seasoned veterans like the flight instructors at the airport, it’s still a thrill to a ride across the sky.

“It’s fun for them to share flying with people that wouldn’t normally come out here,” Nasalroad said. “They enjoy it, they always look forward to it.”

Nasalroad said he isn’t sure if the rides help drum up interest in flight lessons at the airport, but he said he’s glad to get the exposure from participating in Newton Fest.

“The shows were church supported and I have a church background. There’s a barrier that’s broken down when you’re in front of an audience which is very forgiving, by the way,” Semler said.

“It’s a place you can discover what you can do.”

But Semler’s repertoire goes beyond the King’s gospel tunes. Part-time Elvis and full-time nursing home administrator, Semler performs at street dances, car shows and 1950s throwback

at it as a way to promote aviation,” Nasalroad said.

Semler is familiar with Jasper County. In his stint as a health administrator in Baxter four years ago, Semler found his dead-on Elvis sneer smiling at 1950s and 60s class reunion gigs and at the Baxter Bethany United Church of Christ.

In Newton, Semler said fans can expect a 35 to 40-minute set list with favorites like “Burning Love.” He’ll then leave some time for requests and a little audience participation. Semler is a tenor and able to sing most of Elvis’ many

I think that’s what hits people. I say to the crowd, ‘Seriously, you want a downer? I’ll give it to you.’ It makes for a fun hour. Elvis will never die and neither will his music.”

Main Street BBQ an overnight event Wine Shots — Sip and Stroll added to Saturday

By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Expanding to four types of meat this year, the Newton Main Street Third Annual Backyard BBQ competition is back and better than ever for Newton Fest 2018.

In partnership with the Iowa Barbecue Society, cooking will begin at 7 p.m. Friday and continue overnight until people’s choice voting beings at 5 p.m. Saturday.

“The BBQ contest is an overnight cook (this year,)” Newton Main Street Executive Director Graham Sullivan said.

Held in the DMACC Event Center north parking lot, the smell of barbecue will waft through all of Newton Fest. Teams will have the opportunity to prepare ribs, chicken, pork and brisket at this year’s competition. The brisket will be the peo-

ple’s choice selection for the event.

Contestants will have the chance to win $900 in prizes. For first place in certified judging for each category $250 will be awarded, with $150 going to second and $100 to third. Grand champion will receive $300 and reserve grand champion wins $200. For the people’s choice award, $200 is given for first, $150 for second and $100 for third.

New to Newton Fest, the Newton Main Street’s Wine Shots — Sip and Stroll will give shoppers the chance to check out downtown businesses will sampling wine and enjoying appetizers. Set for 12 to 4 p.m. Saturday, the event is a new way to show off the great downtown retail.

“Many towns have a wine walk of sorts so we decided to try our own,” Sullivan said. “We are excited to get people in the downtown area during Newton Fest to shop, sample wine and have a good time.”

The Bill Riley Talent Search competition returns at 6 p.m. at the Maytag Bowl in Newton. Come be a part of Iowa history as talented youngsters compete in Newton’s local Bill Riley Talent Search. Youngsters will compete in two divisions (Sprouts - 2-12 & Seniors -13-21) for a chance to perform at the Iowa State Fair and win scholarship money. The Bill Riley Talent Search has been an Iowa staple since 1959.

Fighting cancer, one color at a time Newton’s Relay for Life will showcase the colors of cancer

T

his year, Debby Pence is hoping for a rainbow.

Pence, who’s organizing the Jasper County Relay for Life, is making some changes to the long-running event this year.

The Relay for Life will run during Newton Fest this year, with the walk taking place Thursday in conjunction with the Bill Riley Talent Search at the Maytag Bowl in Maytag Park. Pence said she’s excited to partner with Newton Fest.

“I’m excited about the change and thankful for Newton Fest in allowing us to walk alongside and join their event,” Pence said.

Cancer survivors in Jasper County will have a chance to participate in a new event this year, the relay’s theme is “The Color of Cancer.” When survivors show up at the relay they’ll be invited to place a scoop of colored rice into a series of clear plastic tubing. At the end of the event, organizers will use the tubing to showcase the different types of cancer, a move Pence said she hopes will continue to build awareness.

“My goal has always been to keep the relay going throughout the entire year somehow,” she said. “People don’t just go

through their cancer journey for one night, they go through it for many months.”

Attendees will also be able to place colored ribbons on a cancer tree, built by welding students at Newton’s DMACC campus. Organizers plan to display the tree throughout Newton for years to come, a sign Pence said will help remind residents that fighting cancer is a battle that lasts longer than a single night.

This year, the Relay will take place during the Bill Riley Talent Search, all cancer survivors

are welcome to participate. Attendees are encouraged to register between 5 and 6 p.m. at the blue tent, near the parking lot to the west of the Maytag Bowl.

Dinner will be provided by HyVee, one of the event’s sponsors.

Money raised from the meal will be used to support the American Cancer Society.

Community members will have a chance to enjoy the talented performers before the survivor ceremony and walk begins, during the intermission of the talent show. As the names

of survivors are read off, they’ll have a chance to take their victory lap with their caretakers, family and friends.

Fun with Chemistry to explode at Newton Fest

By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Science has never been so fun. Newton Fest is adding Fun with Chemistry featuring Dr. Kate Biberdorf from the University of Texas at 11 a.m. Saturday at the DMACC Green space 2nd Stage.

“What I have done is develop demonstrations to enhance the instruction,” Biberdorf said. “I use demos to try to get (the students) engaged.”

The mission of the Fun with Chemistry outreach program is to ignite, inspire and motivate K-12 students to develop a love for learning and exploration in the sciences. It does this by utilizing hands-on demonstrations to foster a determination to pursue a science, target those students who may be intimidated by the subject. By developing compelling experiments, the program works to prove that chemistry is relevant and can be fun and entertaining.

done by Fun with Chemistry include a moon rock station where participants make their own moon rock from materials available at home, the Oobleck Station where participants observe the physical properties of a non-Newtonian fluid when a solid substance melts in the hands, and the Van dear Graaf Station which lets participants interface with an electrostatic generator and feel the current run through the veins, and possibly in the hair.

Shows put on by the program have included watching an oscillating clock during a Briggs-Rauscher reaction in action, with a solution magically changes colors and thundercloud, what results from mixing liquid nitrogen with burning hot water. Biberdorf has also been known to breathe fire at the start of her shows Through the program, Biberdorf is working to science break stereotypes all while blowing stuff up. According to program leaders, through her theatrical and hands-on approach to teaching, Biberdorf is

breaking down the image of the stereotypical scientist, while reaching students that might otherwise be intimidated by science.

“Once I was 15, I knew I was going to be a chemist and I literally never turned back,” Biberdorf said.

Students’ emotional responses, rather than the memorization of facts, is key to Biberdorf ’s dynamic approach to her program, as well as science in general.

Her exciting and engaging program leaves audiences with a positive, memorable impression of science – all while continuing her cause of diminishing the stigma around women in science.

Biberdorf is a featured member of “Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls,” an organization founded by Amy Poehler and Meredith Walker dedicated to helping young people cultivate their authentic selves. She has said her ultimate dream is to headline an explosive science show in Vegas.

n Newton, racing has always been one of the town’s favorite pass times. From NASCAR drivers speeding around Iowa Speedway to the dirt karts smashing their way through Newton Kart Klub, it is clear residents have a need for speed.

But Newton will soon get a taste for a new kind of racing for this year’s Newton Fest. But it may not exactly what you think it is quacked up to be.

“You can’t watch a duck race without smiling,” Robert Duck, who will bring 41 racing waterfowls to Newton Fest this year, said. “One of our ducks have the world record at 83-100th of a second. They can go really, really fast.”

Robert Duck — yes, that is his real name — waddled into waterfowl racing after he came across a unique festival in Deming, N.W. in 1980.

The event was called “The Great American Duck Race.” The jewelry shop owner had two pet ducks, and his last name is Duck.

It only seemed natural for the duck owner from Bosque Farms to join in on the fun. And ever since, he and his ducks have hit the pond swimming, with no signs of slowing down.

“The first year, we won third place out of 176 ducks. We saw how they raced them, so we made a plan for the next year,” Duck said. “The next year (the race had) like 430 entries.

We had seven ducks ... I wound up winning the race and I won it 12 straight years that we entered. Because my last name is Duck, it really caused a media explosion.”

From appearances on the “Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” to front page articles in the Wall Street Journal, Duck, his wife Kathy and his team of quackers have been drawing attention across the nation.

After selling his jewelry business in 1999, Duck and his group of feathered swimmers have been entertaining people of all ages at a variety of events, including county fairs, town festivals and state fairs.

When Thursday swims around, Duck and his ducks will put their speed to the test in Newton for the annual town celebration.

“We have never been to Jasper County, but we are looking forward to it,” he said. “We have been to the Great Jones County Fair a couple of times and we have at the Mississippi Valley Fair in Davenport three or four times. We love Iowa.”

Duck and his high-speed pals are scheduled set up shop Thursday through Saturday in the DMACC Newton Campus Greenspace, located 600 N. Second Ave. W. near West Fourth Street North. Throughout the day, members of the audience will release ducks into a four-lane swimming track — each lane two feet high, two feet wide and 16 feet long. Each show will

consist of four heat races, ending with an epic finale race — pitting the winners of all previous competitions against one another.

With each race sporting a fun theme, Duck said spectators will surely have a favorite mallard to get behind and cheer on to win the race.

“We have a NASCAR race. Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be in that race. Chase Elliot and Tony Stewart also tend to appear in that race,” Duck said. “(We have ducks named) Rugrats, Princess Sophia and Chewbacca.”

The shows will also give visitors an opportunity to feed the speed swimmers.

In between the shows, show patrons can also show off their mallard knowledge through duck trivia.

entertainment, attendants are guaranteed to create a lifelong memory by waddling their way down to the mini swimming track that weekend.

“It will be an experience you have never had before.

We will all just have a good time,” Duck said. “This is something a child will remember forever.”

Red birds return to the nest for Alumni Weekend 5 Cardinals inducted in HOF

Alumni will celebrate 14 individual class reunions and three all-classes events.

As they reunite, they’ll also celebrate the induction of five of their own into the high school’s Hall of Fame.

Newton High school principal Bill Peters, who started the school’s Hall of Fame in 2014, said this year’s inductees each have something that makes them stand out.

“There’s just such a resume of outstanding accomplishment, they’re just such a great crew,” Peters said.

Five Cardinals inducted into NHS Hall of Fame

Bruce Hoffmeier Bruce’s dedication to Newton High School made him the second longest serving administrator in the school’s history, second only to H.A. “Pop” Lynn. Following retirement from NHS as Assistant Principal in 2002, Bruce began a second career as Foundation Director of the Skiff Medical Center for 11 years. His service to our community also includes 20 years on the church council at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and nine years as Church Trustee, Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, president of both Newton Rotary Clubs, and serving on the Newton Library Board of Directors and the Newton Community Educational Foundation.

Fred Maytag II, 1927 At Newton High School, Fred was a member of the debate team and the yearbook staff while excelling academically and earning enough credits to graduate after his junior year.

After assuming the presidency of Maytag in 1940, he restructured the company along modern, professional lines, leading to the construction of a second factory in Newton. Fred organized the Maytag Company Foundation in 1952, which offered college scholarships to NHS graduates and donated to other philanthropic causes.

The Maytag Family Foundation continues its good works to this day.

Dick Starr, 1951 As a student athlete at Newton High School, Dick was a three-year basketball starter, starting quarterback, and the top high jumper in track and field. Following graduation from Drake University, his love of sports and teaching took him to Indianola High School where he taught and coached several sports, then on to Simpson College. In addition to successful coaching at Simpson, he developed the college’s Sports Education Program and served as that program’s director. He retired after 30 years while also serving as tennis coach and chair of physical education.

Carol was actively involved in music, drama, and theater orchestra at Newton High School and graduated as salutatorian . After her medical education and a fellowship in developmental pediatrics, she was appointed Assistant Professor and Director of the Child Development Clinic at the University of Missouri.

Moving to private practice in 1976, Carol specialized in treating children with complicated medical problems, and after retirement has participated in medical mission trips to nations where medical services are substandard.

Jason McCleary, 1990 Jason was an outstanding Cardinal at Newton High School, participating in football, basketball, track, and baseball all four years.

He was named to the All-State Football second Team by both the Des Moines Register and the Iowa Newspaper Association, had four first place finishes in track at the conference meet, and was Drake Relays champion and state meet champion in the 100-meter highs.

Jason was the 1989-90 Des Moines Register Senior Athlete of the Year.

“It’s great that we’ll be inducting honorees on an annual basis, considering the number of distinguished Cardinals to choose from,” Peters said.

“For me, being a Cardinal has always been a work of pleasure and the Hall of Fame is another illustra-

tion of how the Red Pride tradition is alive and well in Newton.”

Mark Hallam said he’s impressed with the work Peters has done to keep the Hall of Fame going.

“Bill (Peters) and his staff have done their usual outstanding job at the high school this year,” Hallam said.

Cardinal alums and Newton community members are invited to reconnect with the high school on Saturday, June 9, during an all-school brunch hosted by the alumni association. Brunch will be served at 10 a.m., with the Hall of Fame induction beginning at 10:30.

Tickets may be purchased for $9 at the All-Classes Open House and Reunion at the DMACC Maytag Events Center Friday night, and online via NewtonAlumni.org. Tickets will also be available at the door for $10.
