Newton Fest adds Bill Riley Talent Search to 2016 schedule Newton Daily News The second annual Newton Fest has 18 new events added to the 2016 schedule. One of the additions is the Bill Riley Talent Search, a decades old event steeped with Iowa history and lots of talented youngsters.

Young Iowans will have a chance to display their talents during 2016’s Newton Fest newly added Bill Riley Talent Search. The show will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Maytag Bowl in Maytag Park. The event is free and open to the public.

Newton Fest adds activities to highlight healthy living

By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Activities for all ages will get people moving throughout Newton Fest 2016. Five new events headline a healthy alternative for those at the festival from fitness in the park to two Hy-Vee KidsFit activity sessions.

Events kick-off on Friday with Hy-Vee KidsFit from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Newton Public Library. Hy-Vee registered dietitians will lead KidsFit activities that promote fitness and nutrition. Hy-Vee KidsFit is a fun program designed for kids and families to help promote health, exercise and nutrition as a priority in chil-

dren’s daily lives.

Saturday begins bright and early with Project AWAKE’s Annual The Birds & The Bees 8K Fun Run. Registration opens at 7 a.m. at Sunset Park with the racer taking off at 8 a.m. A kids race will follow at 9 a.m. A $25 registration fee is required.

Participants are encouraged to take part in a costume contest, in which awards will be given to those who look most like a gardener, a backyard animal, a flower and whoever is wearing the brightest clothes.

Proceeds from the race support the Newton Arboretum.

Also at Sunset Park, the Hy-Vee Healthy You Mobile, sponsored by Newton HyVee, will be on hand with

registered dietitians and/or pharmacists to provide free block pressure check to adults 18 and older. Free water and bananas will be provided at the truck for those participating in the fun run and fitness events.

Skiff Medial Center, in partnership with the Newton YMCA, will be host a free outdoor yoga and Pilates classes at 9 and 10 a.m. at Sunset Park. The classes will be held near the shelter houses and beginners to experienced yogis are invited to attend.

Skiff will also host the Newton Fest Kids Zone in downtown Newton on Saturday afternoon.

Junk Fest brings new life to old stuff during Newton Fest

By Jessica Lowe Newton Daily News Among the most anticipated additions to the 2016 Newton Fest line up is an event all about junk.

Newton Fest’s first ever Junk Fest will bring vendors from around Central Iowa to Newton to sell their repurposed “junk,” antiques and vintage ware on Friday and Saturday. Vendors will be on hand from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the former site of the Newton Seed Store on the corner of North Fourth Avenue West and West Third Street North.

“Having Junk Fest added to the festivities during Newton Fest was a great fit because it is a activity that you can come and go at your leisure,” Amanda Price, Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director said. “It’s a shopping experience, and hopefully it will draw some more vis-

Plans for adding a junk show to Newton Fest’s sophomore installment began in the fall of 2015 from Price, who is also a Newton Fest committee chair.

“The idea for Junk Fest came from me frequenting the big Des Moines junk shows that are held twice a year as well as attending antique shows nearby,” Price said. “I know how much people are in love with ‘junk’ so I thought it would be a fun draw for Newton Fest.”

For those who have never been to a junk show get ready to see a variety of things from retro furniture to repurposed items, antiques to one-of-akind pieces. It is a Pinterest followers dream come true.

“There will be something for everybody,” Price said. “I think these events have become so popular because of Pinterest, as well as the love of being JUNK FEST | 11

A pair of Jasper County Animal Rescue League dogs will fill the roles with hopes they will find a home in the process.

Lolo and Current, both greyhounds that are presumed to be sisters, graduated this week from the Pups on Parole program and will begin their appearances at Newton Fest activities and will also take over the Get to Know Newton Instagram account.

The dogs had been on the loose in Jasper County for about six months before they could be captured. Since they’ve been at JCARL the 3-year-old dogs are learning

Award winning author to speak at Newton Public Library Newton Daily News The Newton Public Library will welcome local author, Jennifer Wilson, at 6p.m. on Thursday. Wilson is the library’s featured Newton Fest author, and will discuss both her memoir, “Running Away to Home,” and her latest novel, “Water.”

“Running Away to Home” follows Jennifer and her family during their move to Croatia, in an effort to uncover family roots and history. The memoir was the winner of the 2011 American Society of Journalists and Authors Best Nonfiction Book award, and was featured on CNN, NPR and Travel with Rick Steves.

“Water” is the fictional story of Freja Folsom, a reporter in Des Moines assigned to an environmental story about the safety of Iowa’s water supply. When a man illegally drops a well into the city’s aquifer, Freja uncovers a fierce battle between local farmers, concerned citizens, and the government.

This program is free and open to the public. Program will be held in the Newton Public Library Meeting Room.

Contest to kick up sweet smells, tastes Barbecue contest added to Newton Fest celebration

By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News It’s not unusual for engineers or farmers to call upon a statewide association for help making a decision. That’s the type of help to be utilized with another area some people take very, very seriously: barbecued meat.

Newton Fest has added The Backyard BBQ Competition Saturday for its second-annual weekend event. A panel of certified judges, to be brought in by the Iowa Barbecue Society, will decide on about $1,000 worth of prizes.

The contest is set for 3 p.m. in the city parking lot on North Second Avenue West, next to the Walker, Billingsley and Bair law office. The public will be charged a general fee of

$5 per person to enter the lot and sample as much chicken and pork ribs as desired.

Prizes for various categories, including a People’s Choice Award to be voted upon by the public, will be offered. The cost to enter is $30. The event is organized by Newton Main Street in partnership with the Iowa Barbecue Society and is sponsored

by Moo’s BBQ. “We’ve never done a contest like this before,” said Andrew Bassman, executive director of Newton Main Street. “We were looking for a food-related event to hold downtown for Newton Fest and get amateur cooks involved. Plus, we love the smell of barbecue.”

Newton Fest’s main day is Saturday, but there are Thursday and Friday night events that make it a weekend-long event. The community festival, which features family fun, live music and entertainment for all ages, was named the Outstanding New Event in the metro category by the Iowa Tourism Office and the Travel Federation of Iowa.

The contest is for ribs and chicken wings. Country-style ribs are not allowed.

The judges will have gone through rigorous training.

There is a daylong training event held periodically in Johnston that costs $95 to take

“This is one of the few Newton Fest events we have that is ‘rain or shine,’” he said.

You don’t need to be the owner of a mint-condition 1955 Ford Thunderbird to enjoy a wellplanned car show.

Car shows in Newton typically draw between 60 and 80 vehicles, and last year’s event at Newton Fest seemed to be in that range. This year’s “Cool Cars Around the Courthouse” starts at 10 a.m. on June 11 as part of Newton Fest.

“The coolest thing about car shows is that they’re for all ages,” said Vicki Wade, who helped organize this year’s event. “From grandparents who have the old prized hobby car they bring out a few times each summer, to the serious motorhead, to the 8-year-old wide-eyed looking at the dash, just about anyone can enjoy a car show.”

Cool Cars will stretch around the North Second Avenue side of the courthouse and along First Street North, in front of the Capitol II Theatre. Entrants are encouraged to arrive around 9 a.m. There is no entry fee.

Church service to celebrate faith, food

By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Church leaders in the community are inviting the public to come out for the inaugural Newton Fest Community Church Service and Picnic.

The service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the Maytag Bowl and feature a non-denominational service for the entire community.

The idea for the community service originally was discussed before the first Newton Fest, but those involved were unable to work out the logistics to make it happen. The organizers did not let the idea go away and began planning for Newton Fest 2016.

The service came together through a leadership of five local

pastors. Those pastors include Ken Ahntholz of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Mikey Carter of The Salvation Army, Meghan Davis of First Presbyterian

Church, Gary Marzolf of First United Methodist Church and Petersen. Six additional churches are participating in the service and encouraging members to attend. Those churches are First Lutheran Church, United Presbyterian Church, First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), St. Luke United Methodist Church and Community of Christ.

“We are simply gathering for worship as the body of Christ.

Through singing wellknown and quick-tolearn hymns, joining together in prayer, proclaiming our faith through an ancient creed that has stood the test of time, hearing scripture read and related to our lives today we hope to remind worshipers that though we

are diverse in so many ways we are the body of Christ and individually members of it,” Petersen said.

The offering at the service will support the Ministers’ Compassion Fund, which is administered by The Salvation Army. The fund assists individuals in the community who are in need of additional support.

Those attending are asked to bring blankets and lawn chairs for seating. Those attending are also encouraged to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy following church services.

In case of rain, the service will be moved to the Newton High School.

Church tour will highlight historical events Eight buildings will be featured

By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News It’s easy to look at many of Newton’s historic downtown churches and marvel at the solid construction, some of it done a century ago and long before modern equipment and materials.

However, Larry Hurto is going to focus on a different aspect of churches during a tour planned during up-

coming Newton Fest: the people.

“I’m going to talk more about congregations than architecture,” Hurto said. “The eight churches we plan to visit have a deep, diverse history to their membership in terms of numbers going up or down and influences like which nationalities were moving to town. Churches were a big anchor of that society; some of the earliest immigrants came here with almost nothing.”

A historic display will he set up at Newton City Hall, where a related adult coloring program will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with Hurto’s historic church walk set to begin at 2 p.m. at the Newton Public Library Saturday.

Hurto said the tour will take about one hour. The Newton Fest barbecue contest is set to begin at 3 p.m. As the chair of the Newton Historic Preservation Commission, Hurto said the event will partly serve as a reminder of how far the city has come in its quest to preserve its history — and

it will outline the importance of the work that lies ahead.

“I’m only going to talk about two or three minutes at each church before taking questions,” Hurto said. “This will go much better if the weather cooperates. We seem to have had a lot of rain this year.”

The tour group will walk from the library to the First United Methodist Church, which was built in 1915.

Talent Continued from Page 3 “Many communities host a Bill Riley Talent Show but Newton has not had one for several years,” said Jessica Lowe, co-chair of Newton Fest. “The talent show is such a fun event for the kids competing and for the audience to enjoy. It was a natural fit to add the event to Newton Fest.”

The Bill Riley Talent Search, which started in 1959, offers an opportunity to help young Iowans express

themselves and share their talents. The Bill Riley Talent Search was founded with the goal to promote self-esteem, self-discipline and self-confidence through participation in the performing arts, according to billrileytalentsearch.com.

Participants will compete in two divisions. Youth ages 2 to 12 years old at the time of the show will compete in the Sprout Division and youth ages 13 to 21 years old Senior Division. The contestants will vie for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies and cash prizes. The winning act from

each division at the Newton show will qualify to compete at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, Aug. 11-21.

The talent search will be judged by three talented professionals with a background in performing arts.

The panel includes Sue Beukema, Newton Community Theatre Board Member; Elaine Mattingly, President of South Skunk Blues Society and David Baxter, Director of Choirs at Newton High School. Longtime Newton resident Mark Allen will serve as Master of Ceremonies.

“It is going to be a great night,” Allen said. “If the weather cooperates it will be a wonderful event and everyone should come and enjoy it. And what a great venue to have the event at the historic Maytag Bowl in Maytag Park.

I think having it there means so much to the community.

The fact that the talent show is now part of Newton Fest is just another feather in the cap of the Newton Fest organizers.”

Registrations are now being accepted. Fifteen slots are available in each division and pre-registration is encour-

Ladies of the 80s rocking Newton Fest

By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Grab your heels and Aqua Net and head downtown to party with the Ladies of the 80s. Newton is throwing a 80s dance party with Minnesota-based Ladies of the 80s from 8 p.m. to midnight on Saturday and everyone is invited. The event is presented by Trinity Structural Towers, title sponsor of Newton Fest.

“We try to give our audience a memorable experience, by involving them in our antics throughout the show,” performer Raven said.

“Not only will the music make you want to get up and dance, the endless parade of music icons makes it as much fun to watch as it is to listen.”

The band first formed in 2003 under the name Rock It Science. The band members always dressed up in 80s styles and over time, began integrating costumed characters such as Madonna, Michael Jackson, Heart, Pat Benatar and many more.

The group has two very talented female vocalist, who they wanted to highlight, which lead to the are change in 2010.

The show covers all genres of the 1980s including pop, rock and country. It even features a few flashbacks

from 60s and 70s music fans.

“Sonny and Cher, Tina Turner and ABBA join forces with Dolly Parton, Shania Twain, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Pat Benatar and many more to round out a night of fun,” Raven said. “Above all, we want

you to have fun, relax, and relive that wonderful era that was the totally awesome 80s.”

Newton Fest CoChair Jessica Lowe said the event committee searched for months to find the perfect group that would provide a great show, play really great music and offer music that many generations would enjoy.

“I think Ladies of the ‘80s is going to be an awesome show for Newton Fest. They play fan favorites from the 1980s, that coupled with their costumes and dancing, it should be a really fun night,” Lowe said.

The Birds and the Bees 8K Fun Run set for Saturday Newton Daily News Project AWAKE is hosting The Birds and The Bees 8K beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday from Sunset Park.

The entrance fee for the race is $25. The first 50 registrants will receive a complimentary gift for signing up.

A free kids fun run starts at 9 a.m On race day, participants are encouraged to participate in the costume contest where awards will be given to the individuals who look most like a gardener, backyard animal or flower. The person wearing the brightest clothing will also win a prize.

The top male and female runners will receive $25 in Chamber Bucks, which can be redeemed at several Newton businesses.

Last year, Newton Fest incorporated a completely different set of presentations to commemorate the downtown business district having just earned an entry in the National Register of Historic Places. A costumed dramatic interpretation, a photography display and a tour of the courthouse brought in an audience comprised mainly of current Newton residents, but also a few outof-towners with strong local ties.

Alumni will play a five-inning game versus this year’s Cardinal softball players. There is no fee to participate, only the opportunity to adopt a Varsity Cardinal. Prior to the start of the game, alumni can randomly draw a varsity player’s name who will introduce herself and be expected to keep in contact on how they are progressing and how the team is performing.

Six to be inducted into NHS Hall of Fame All-Alumni Brunch set for Saturday Lyle D. Goodhue, Ph.D.

The names of the six people who will be inducted into the Newton High School Hall of Fame this year were announced in April. They’ll be honored as part of the All-Alumni Brunch, to be held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday in the NHS lower gym. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Dr. Andrew Hershey, M.D., David Jones, Ph.D., the late Frank “Bucky” O’Connor, Cindy Cohn, J.D. and the late Lyle D. Goodhue, Ph.D. and Treye Jackson make up the 2016 class.

It’s the third year for the Hall of Fame, which includes contributors from athletics, academics and the community.

Dr. Andrew Hershey, M.D. Class of 1981

Hershey is Director of the Division of Neurology at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology at the University of Cincinnati. He has authored numerous, peer-reviewed journal articles and is recognized as world authority in pediatric neurology.

Hershey’s research interests include the Hershey diagnosis and treatment of childhood headache disorders, characterization of outcome responses, studies in new pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment regimes, and the genomics of migraines.

His research has been funded by

the National Institute of Health since 2003.

David Jones, Ph.D. Class of 1956

Jones completed a Ph.D. in Economics from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Starting his career at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, he later became financial economist and vice president at the Irving Trust Company.

In 1972 he joined the Wall Street firm of Aubrey Lanston & Jones Company and held the positions of chief economist and Chairman of the Board of Directors. It was commonplace in the 1990s to see Dr. Jones’ commentary on monetary economics as a guest on ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, Fox Business, Bloomberg, and PBS. He served on the advisory board of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and on the board of directors of the National Economists’ Club, and has authored five books on monetary economics.

Frank “Bucky” O’Connor Class of 1932

O’Connor led the Iowa Hawkeyes during the most successful era in Hawkeye men’s basketball history before he passed away in a 1958 car wreck at the age of 44.

Born in Monroe, O’Connor ended up at Newton High. His career as

a Cardinal basketball star took him to Drake University, where he became the Bulldogs’ senior year team captain despite his small stature and self-described poor eyesight.

After rising to the rank of captain while O’Connor serving with the United States Army Air Corps in the Pacific in World War II, O’Connor held highschool and junior college coaching positions in Boone before joining the University of Iowa staff in 1948 as freshman basketball coach. Taking over as head basketball coach in 1951, he’s best remembered for recruiting and coaching five players who became known as The Fabulous Five.

O’Connor led the Iowa Hawkeyes to consecutive trips to the Final Four by placing particular emphasis on faith, attitude, and conditioning. He is a member of the Des Moines Register’s Iowa Sports Hall of Fame.

Cindy Cohn, J.D. Class of 1982

Cohn is president and executive director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, devoted to defending individual rights in the digital world. She was recognized among the 100 most influential lawyers in America by the National Law Journal in 2013.

The EFF has played a leading role in supporting strong privacy rights for users of techCohn nologies, opposing government overreach and protecting free speech and innovation.

In 2011, the State Bar of California awarded Cohn its Intellectual Property Vanguard Award, and in 2012 the

Northern California Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists awarded her the James Madison Freedom of Information Award.

Class of 1924

Goodhue, a member of the graduating class of 1924, earned a Ph.D. in plant chemistry from Iowa State University. During a long and distinguished career as both scientist and inventor, Goodhue was granted 105 U.S. and 25 foreign patents.

An internationally-known inventor, research chemist, and entomologist, Goodhue Goodhue perfected the concept of using hand-held containers to spray a liquid product as a mist or a foam. His invention, known as the “bug bomb,” was credited with saving the lives of thousands of Pacific-theater soldiers during World War II when deployed against malaria-carrying mosquitoes in the Pacific.

Goodhue passed away in 1981, a few months after another Cardinal had some of this biggest moments.

Treye Jackson Class of 1981

Jackson (NHS ‘81) is one of Newton High School’s most accomplished male athletes of the 1980s, helping lead the 1980 Cardinal football team to a state title and becoming one of the first Iowans to win the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter titles at the state track meet on the HOF | 17

He went on to play football briefly for the Iowa Hawkeyes and he is a member of the Iowa Track Coaches Hall of Fame.

Jackson was the first Iowa high school athlete to earn three individual state track titles on the same day. Upon his induction to the Iowa Track Coaches Hall of Fame, Jackson credited his success to the community of Newton and the Newton Community School District.
