David Duchovny Barry Manilow in “Barry Manilow’s A Very Barry Christmas”
OF THE X-FILES ON COMET Q: It’s been interesting to see David Duchovny back in the public eye for the movie he made with Meg Ryan. How long was he on “The X-Files”? A: The actor’s run as FBI Agent Fox Mulder began in 1993, and he has said that he didn’t expect the Fox series (now repeating on Comet) to last as long as it did, nor to be as popular as it became. His regular weekly run on the show went through the seventh season, when headlines were made by a lawsuit Duchovny filed against 20th Century Fox Television, alleging that it sold rights to repeats of the show to Fox-affiliated stations for less than they were worth … thus costing him some profits. The suit was settled, but Duchovny’s contract for the show was up, so he left as a full-time cast member (with Robert Patrick assuming the role of a Mulder surrogate, John Doggett). However, Duchovny returned for part of the eighth season, with the explanation that Mulder had been abducted by aliens. He also came back for the presumed series finale in Season 9, but as it turned out, he wasn’t done with the show yet.

Fox gave “The X-Files” revivals as a limited-run program in 2016 and 2018, which were deemed to be the 10th and 11th seasons of the show. Series creator-producer Chris Carter has inferred that there are more stories in that universe to be told, but any discussions of a continuation of the franchise haven’t come to fruition. The show also yielded two theatrical films in which Duchovny played Mulder (opposite Gillian Anderson’s Agent Dana Scully), “The X-Files: Fight the Future” (1998) and “The X-Files: I Want to Believe” (2008).
