OF ‘CLAIM TO FAME’ ON ABC Did your parents encourage your creativity when you were growing up?
Very much. So they never pushed us, which was really amazing. They never pushed us in any direction but we were all pretty driven from a very early age and I think they just supported our dreams and helped us make them a reality.
Derek Jeter is featured in “The Captain,” premiering Monday on ESPN and ESPN+.
What was the earliest moment when you realized when you wanted to be a musician?
I was home sick from school when I was 13 years old and I couldn’t watch TV anymore. I was just like bored out of my mind before we had thousands of television or streaming (shows). We had a teach-yourself-guitar (book) there and so I faked being sick for another week so I could keep teaching myself guitar. And well, now I am who I am and play the guitar. So I would say that that is my earliest memory of realizing that I fell in love with music, first and foremost. But it definitely was the right choice to stay home from school for a week. But you know, I don’t tell that story to my daughters so they know that they can’t do that.

Were your folks playing the Beatles and the Beach Boys and music like that in your home?
Oh yeah. Bee Gees, Beach Boys, Jackson 5 ... like the whole thing. Very big education. Jefferson Starship. It was everywhere, all the time. Can we assume they had a nice stereo system, too?
We did not have a good stereo system. We didn’t come up with a lot but we did enjoy music all the same. ... We had a great collection of tapes.
