OF ‘SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE’ ON FOX
PBS televises the National Memorial Day Concert 2022 on Sunday.
If you watch a concert, you see a bunch of back-up dancers, but you don’t know these people and you can’t connect with them. This is a way to connect with dancers on a real and raw level. Were you familiar with “So You Think You Can Dance” host Cat Deeley before?
This is my first time meeting her. We did a couple of Zoom calls with the whole team which was an amazing advantage for us because we weren’t just meeting each other on Day One. Cat is such a staple of the show, and I think she’s so talented at what she does. She’s really the traffic cop, basically, who makes it all work. And it seems so effortless when she does it. Do you think that fellow judge JoJo Siwa comes in with a certain advantage, having been a contestant on “Dancing With the Stars”?
I don’t want to knock another show, but it’s just so different. “So You Think You Can Dance” has so much heart, and you really connect with the journey of these dancers who are really at the beginning of it all. “Dancing With the Stars” sometimes can be like, “OK, let’s put a bunch of celebrities together and watch the train wreck,” but this show has a positivity behind it that’s hard to deny. And it’s hard to deny that it’s been on for so long. Having been on Fox with “Glee,” does it please you to be back there now?
The Fox family is tight-knit. They’d wanted me on a couple of times to do other shows, but I’ve really spent these past few years focusing on family first. I’m excited to be back, though.
