OF ‘LAW & ORDER’ ON NBC Were you surprised when executive producer Dick Wolf decided to revive the original “Law & Order”?
Holmes and Sam Straley are among the stars of “Welcome to Flatch,” premiering Thursday on Fox.
He was talking about it five years ago, too, and I don’t think he’s ever stopped talking about it. One of the reasons that we’re back is because of his persistence and determination, and his complete conviction that it was a terrible mistake to stop in the first place. The other reason that we’re coming back, I think, is because we stopped making the shows but the audience never stopped watching them. So, thanks to them. When you first joined “Law & Order” as Jack McCoy at the start of Season 5, did you foresee it enduring this long?
Well, I had no idea, of course. I don’t know who knew that it was going to morph into so many different iterations. But from the beginning, I wanted the Tony Awards to give Dick Wolf a Tony for what he had done for stage actors in New York City (by casting so many of them in guest roles). So far, I haven’t succeeded, but I think it’s a great idea and I think they ought to do it. After “Law & Order” supposedly ended, it seemed like you never stopped working, including in the series “Grace and Frankie” and “The Newsroom.” Was that always your plan?
Ever since I saw this on a crosstown bus on (New York’s) 57th Street, (I’ve remembered) a quotation from Satchel Paige that said, “Keep on running and don’t look back, because somebody may be gaining on you” ... and that’s kind of been my motto about show business ever since.
‘Flatch’ is Fox’s destination in new comedy series
While I was doing “Law & Order” (the first time), I was scrambling to do other things at the same time. When “Law & Order” was paused, as it was, I was scrambling to do things all the time. It’s just what I do.
